위험에서 지켜주심
봄철 나무심기를 위해 정원을 정리하면서 겨울 잡초 덤불을 잡아 뽑다가 나는 놀라 펄쩍 뛰었습니다. 황갈색 독사가 내 손 바로 아래의 덤불 속에 숨어 있었던 것입니다. 1인치(2.5센티미터)만 더 아래로 손이 내려갔다면 실수로 그 뱀을 손으로 잡을 뻔했습니다. 덤불을 들어올리자마자 뱀의 화려한 무늬를 보았는데, 그 몸체가 내 두 발 사이 잡초 속에서 똬리를틀고 있었습니다.
나는 먼발치로 물러나, 뱀에 물리지 않은 것을 하나님께 감사드렸습니다. 그리고 내가 전혀 알지도 못했던 위험에서 하나님이 얼마나 많이 나를 구해주셨을까 하는 생각이 들었습니다.
하나님은 그분의 백성들을 지켜주십니다. 모세는 약속의 땅에 들어가기 전에 이스라엘 백성들에게 이렇게 말했습니다. “여호와 그가 네 앞에서 가시며 너와 함께 하사 너를 떠나지 아니하시며 버리지 아니하시리니 너는 두려워하지 말라 놀라지 말라” (신명기 31:8) . 그들은 하나님을 볼 수 없었지만, 그럼에도 하나님은 그들과 함께 계셨습니다.
때로는 우리가 이해하지 못하는 어려운 일들이 일어납니다. 하지만 우리가 알지도 못하는 사이에 하나님께서 우리를 몇 번이나 지켜주셨는지 모릅니다.
성경은 하나님의 완벽하고 섭리적인 보살핌 아래 그의 백성들이 매일 살아가고 있다는 사실을 우리에게 상기시켜줍니다. 하나님은 우리와 항상 함께 계십니다 (마태복음 28:20) .

PRESERVED
While I was clearing out the garden in preparation for spring planting, I pulled up a large clump of winter weeds . . . and leapt into the air! A venomous copperhead snake lay hidden in the undergrowth just below my hand—an inch lower and I would have grabbed it by mistake. I saw its colorful markings as soon as I lifted the clump; the rest of it was coiled in the weeds between my feet.
When my feet hit the ground a few feet away, I thanked God I hadn’t been bitten. And I wondered how many other times He had kept me from dangers I never knew were there.
God watches over His people. Moses told the Israelites before they entered the Promised Land, “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged” (DEUTERONOMY 31:8) . They
couldn’t see God, but He was with them nonetheless.
Sometimes difficult things happen that we may not understand, but we can also reflect on the number of times God has preserved us without our ever being aware!
Scripture reminds us that His perfect, providential care remains over His people every day. He’s always with us (MATTHEW 28:20). JAMES BANKS
