저 장미꽃 위에 이슬
아버지는 옛 찬송가를 즐겨 부르셨습니다. “저 장미꽃 위에 이슬”도 아버지가 좋아하던 찬송 중의 하나였습니다. 몇 해 전 우리는 이 찬송가를 아버지의 장례식에서 불렀습니다. 후렴은 간단합니다. “주님 나와 동행을 하면서 나를 친구 삼으셨네. 우리 서로 받은 그 기쁨은 알 사람이 없도다.” 이 찬송가는 아버지에게 기쁨을 가져다주었고 나에게도 기쁨을 줍니다.
찬송가 작가 C. 오스틴 마일즈는 1912년 봄, 요한복음 20장을 읽고서 이 곡을 썼다고 합니다. “그날 말씀을 읽던 나는 그 이야기 속에 나도 함께 있는 듯했습니다. 나는 마리아가 주님 앞에서 무릎을 꿇고 ‘랍오니[선생님]’ 하고 외치는 극적인 장면을 본 말없는 증인이 되었습니다.”
요한복음 20장에서 우리는 예수님의 빈 무덤 옆에서 울고 있는 막달라 마리아를 봅니다. 그녀는 거기서 왜 울고 있냐고 묻는 남자를 만났습니다. 동산지기인 줄 알았는데, 그녀는 부활하신 구주, ‘예수님’과 이야기하고 있었던 것입니다! 슬픔이 기쁨으로 변한 마리아는 예수님의 제자들에게 달려가서 “내가 주님을 보았어요!”(18절, 현대인의 성경)라고 말했습니다.
우리에게도 예수님께서 부활하셨다는 확신이 있습니다! 지금 주님은 천국에서 하나님 아버지와 함께 계시지만 우리를 홀로 두고 떠나지 않으셨습니다. 그리스도를 믿는 사람들은 우리 안에 주의 영을 모시고 있으며, 그분을 통해 주님이 우리와 함께 계시고 우리가 “주님의 것”이라는 사실을 확인하고 기뻐합니다.

IN THE GARDEN
My dad loved to sing the old hymns. One of his favorites was “In the Garden.” A few years back, we sang it at his funeral. The chorus is simple: “And He walks with me, and He talks with me, and He tells me I am His own, and the joy we share as we tarry there none other has ever known.” That song brought joy to my dad—as it does to me.
Hymn writer C. Austin Miles says he wrote this song in spring 1912 after reading chapter 20 of the gospel of John. “As I read it that day, I seemed to be part of the scene. I became a silent witness to that dramatic moment in Mary’s life when she knelt before her Lord and cried, ‘Rabboni [Teacher].’ ”
In John 20, we find Mary Magdalene weeping near Jesus’ empty tomb. There she met a man who asked why she was crying. Thinking it was the gardener, she spoke with the risen Savior—Jesus! Her sorrow turned to joy, and she ran to tell the disciples, “I have seen the Lord!” (V. 18).
We too have the assurance that Jesus is risen! He’s now in heaven with the Father, but He hasn’t left us on our own. Believers in Christ have His Spirit inside us, and through Him we have the assurance and joy of knowing He’s with us, and we are “His own.” ALYSON KIEDA
