원수 사랑하기
그녀가 보기 전에 나는 방으로 숨었습니다. 숨는 것이 부끄러웠지만 그때는, 아니 ‘영원히’ 그녀를 상대하고 싶지 않았습니다. 그녀를 혼내 주고 콧대를 꺾어주고도 싶었습니다. 이전의 그녀의 행동들 때문에 짜증이 나 있었지만, 그러나 어쩌면 내가 그녀를 더 짜증나게 했을지도 모릅니다!
유대인과 사마리아인도 서로 껄끄러운 관계에 있었습니다. 혼혈이며 자신의 신들을 섬기고 있던 사마리아인들은 유대인들이 보기에 그리심 산에서 이방신을 섬기는, 유대의 혈통과 신앙을 망쳐 놓은 사람들이었습니다(요한복음 4:20). 실제로 유대인들은 사마리아인들을 심히 경멸해서 자기 나라 안의 직선 길을 놓아두고 먼 길로 돌아서 다녔습니다.
그런데 예수님은 더 나은 길을 보여주셨습니다. 주님은 사마리아인을 포함한 모든 사람들에게 구원을 가져오셨습니다. 그래서 주님은 죄 많은 여인과 그 마을에 생명수를 전해주기 위해 사마리아의 중심부로 들어가시기로 작정하셨습니다(4-42절). 제자들을 향한 주님의 마지막 말씀은 주님의 본을 따르라는 것이었습니다. 그들은 예루살렘에서 시작하여 사마리아를 지나 “땅 끝”까지 이르도록 흩어져 모든 사람에게 주님의 복음을 전해야 했습니다 (사도행전 1:8). 사마리아는 지리적으로 예루살렘 옆에 있는 곳 이상의 의미를 담고 있었습니다. 사마리아는 그들의 선교 사명 중 가장 고통스러운 부분 이었습니다. 제자들은 자신들이 좋아하지 않는 사람들을 사랑하기 위해 평생 가졌던 편견을 극복해야만 했습니다.
우리에게 불평거리보다 예수님이 더 중요하십니까? 확인할 수 있는 유일한 한가지 방법이 있습니다. 당신의 “사마리아인”을 사랑하십시오.

그다지 사랑스럽지 않은 사람들을 어떻게 사랑하기 시작할 수 있을까요? 까다로운 사람을 사랑하고 나서 부드러워진 것을 본 적이 있습니까?

LOVING YOUR ENEMY
I ducked into a room before she saw me. I was ashamed of hiding, but I didn’t want to deal with her right then—or ever. I longed to tell her off, to put her in her place. Though I’d been annoyed by her past behavior, it’s likely I had irritated her even more!
The Jews and Samaritans also shared a mutually irritating relationship. Being a people of mixed origin and worshiping their own gods, the Samaritans—in the eyes of the Jews—had spoiled the Jewish bloodline and faith, erecting a rival religion on Mount Gerazim (JOHN 4:20). In fact, the Jews so despised Samaritans they would walk the long way around rather than take the direct route through their country.
Jesus revealed a better way. He brought salvation for all people, including Samaritans. So He ventured into the heart of Samaria to bring living water to a sinful woman and her town (VV. 4–42). His last words to His disciples were to follow His example. They must share His good news with everyone, beginning in Jerusalem and dispersing through Samaria until they reached “the ends of the earth” (ACTS 1:8). Samaria was more than the next geographical sequence. It was the most painful part of the mission. The disciples had to overcome lifetimes of prejudice to love people they didn’t like.
Does Jesus matter more to us than our grievances? There’s only one way to be sure. Love your “Samaritan.” MIKE WITTMER
