기도의 본질
아브라함 링컨이 미국 대통령이 되었을 때 그에게 분열된 나라를 이끌어야 하는 책무가 주어졌습니다. 링컨은 현명한 지도자이며 높은 도덕성의 소유자라는 평판이 있었지만, 그의 성품 가운데 이 모든 것의 기초가 되었던 다른 한 가지 요인이 있었습니다. 그는 자신이 주어진 일을 감당하기에 부족한 사람이라는 점을 알았던 것입니다. 그 부족함을 알고 그는 어떻게 했을까요? 링컨은 말했습니다. “기댈 곳이 없다는 것이 너무나 확실했기에 나는 많은 시간 무릎을 꿇고 기도했습니다. 나 자신의 지혜나 나에 관한 어떤 것으로도 그 하루를 감당하기에 충분치 않아 보였습니다.”
삶의 거대한 도전 앞에서 우리의 지혜와 지식과 힘으로는 감당 못할 극심한 한계에 맞닥뜨릴 때, 링컨처럼 우리도 한계가 없으신 예수님을 전적으로 의지하게 됩니다. 베드로는 주님께 의지하는 것에 대해 이렇게 일깨워주었습니다. “너희 염려를 다 주께 맡기라 이는 그가 너희를 돌보심이라”(베드로전서 5:7).
하나님의 절대적인 권능과 더불어 자녀들을 향한 하나님의 사랑은 하나님을 완전한 존재로 만들어 우리가 연약할 때 그분께 나아갈 수 있도록 해줍니다. 그것이 바로 기도의 본질입니다. 우리는 우리가 부족하고 주님은 영원히 충분하신 분이라는 사실을 주님께(그리고 우리 자신에게) 인정하며 예수님께 나아갑니다. 링컨은 “어디에도 더 기댈 데가 없었다”고 자신의 심경을 토로했습니다. 그러나 하나님께서 크신 사랑으로 우리를 돌보신다는 것을 알게 될 때 그것은 진정 놀라운 복음입니다. 우리는 그분께 나아갈 수 있습니다!

THE ESSENCE OF PRAYER
When Abraham Lincoln became president of the United States, he was tasked with leading a fractured nation. Lincoln is viewed as a wise leader and a man of high moral character, but another element to his makeup, perhaps, was the foundation for everything else. He understood that he was inadequate for the task at hand. His response to that inadequacy? Lincoln said, “I have been driven many times upon my knees by the overwhelming conviction that I had nowhere else to go. My own wisdom and that of all about me seemed insufficient for that day.”
When we come to grips with the massive nature of life’s challenges and the severe limitations of our own wisdom, knowledge, or strength, we find, like Lincoln, that we are utterly dependent on Jesus—the One who has no limitations. Peter reminded us of this dependency when he wrote, “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you” (1 PETER 5:7).
God’s love for His children, paired with His absolute power, make Him the perfect Person to approach with our frailties—and that’s the essence of prayer. We go to Jesus acknowledging to Him (and urselves) that we’re inadequate and He’s eternally sufficient. Lincoln said he felt he “had nowhere else to go.” But when we begin to comprehend God’s great care for us, that’s wonderfully good news. We can go to Him! - BILL CROWDER
