살아있는 친절 기념물

나는 전통적인 것들이 많이 있는 교회에서 자라났습니다. 사랑하는 가족이나 친구가 죽었을 때 한 가지 전통이 행해지는데, 오래지 않아 “......를 추모하며”라고 새긴 동판이 교회의 의자나 복도의 그림에 붙여집니다. 거기에는 죽은 사람의 이름이 새겨져 있어 지나간 삶을 밝게 떠올리게 해줍니다. 나는 항상 그 기념물들을 음미했고 지금도 그렇게 하고 있습니다. 하지만 동시에 그것들이 정적이고 생명이 없으며 문자 그대로 “살아 있지 않은” 것이기 때문에 항상 나로 잠시 생각하게 했습니다. 그 기념물에 “생명”이라는 요소를 추가할 방법이 없을까요?

다윗은 사랑하는 친구 요나단이 죽자, 그를 기억하고 그와 약속한 것을 지키고 싶었습니다(사무엘상 20:12-17). 그러나 다윗은 단순히 정적인 것을 찾기보다는 완전히 살아 있는 어떤 것을 찾아 나섰고 결 국 찾 아 냈 습 니 다 . 바 로 요나단의 아들이었습니다(사무엘하 9:3). 여기서 다윗은 극적인 결정을 합니다. 다윗은 요나단의 아들 므비보셋에게(6-7절) 호의를 베풀어주기로 결심하고(1절), 특별히 그의 토지를 회복시켜주고(“네 할아버지 사울의 모든 밭”) 먹을 것과 마실 것을 지속적으로 공급해주었습니다(“너는 항상 내 상에서 떡을 먹을지니라”).

우리가 명판과 그림으로 죽은 사람들을 계속 기리면서도, 다윗의 예를 떠올리며 아직 살아 있는 사람들에게도 호의를 베풀 수 있기를 바랍니다.

A Living Memorial of Kindness

I grew up in a church full of traditions. One came into play when a beloved family member or friend died. Often a church pew or possibly a painting in a hallway showed up not long afterward with a brass plate affixed: “ In Memory of . . .” The deceased’s name would be etched there, a shining reminder of a life passed on. I always appreciated those memorials. And I still do. Yet at the same time they’ve always given me pause because they are static, inanimate objects, in a very literal sense something “not alive.” Is there a way to add an element of “life” to the memorial?

Following the death of his beloved friend Jonathan, David wanted to remember him and to keep a promise to him (1 SAMUEL 20:12–17). But rather than simply seek something static, David searched and found something very much alive—a son of Jonathan (2 SAMUEL 9:3). David’s decision here is dramatic. He chose to extend kindness (V 1) to Mephibosheth (VV 6–7) in the specific forms of restored property (“all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul”) and the ongoing provision of food and drink (“you will always eat at my table”).

As we continue to remember those who’ve died with plaques and paintings, may we also recall David’s example and extend kindness to those still living.

용기를 불러일으킴

런던의 의회 광장에 전시되어 있는 남성 동상들(넬슨 만델라, 윈스턴 처칠, 마하트마 간디 등) 가운데 외롭게 서 있는 여성 동상 하나가 있습니다. 이 홀로 서 있는 여성은 여성들의 투표권을 위해 싸운 밀리센트 포셋입니다. 그녀는 동료 참정권론자에게 헌정했던 문구 “용기는 어디서나 용기를 불러온다.”가 새겨진 깃발을 들고 지금도 동상의 형태로 살아있습니다. 포셋은 한 사람의 용기가 다른 사람들을 담대하게 하고, 소심한 영혼들이 행동하게 한다고 주장했습니다.

다윗이 아들 솔로몬에게 왕위를 넘겨줄 준비를 하면서, 아들이 곧 짊어지게 될 무거운 책임에 관해 설명해주었습니다. 솔로몬은 자신이 직면한 상황의 중압감에 눌려 떨었던 것 같습니다. 솔로몬의 책임은 이스라엘 백성들이 하나님의 모든 명령을 따르게 하고, 하나님께서 그들에게 맡기신 땅을 지키며, 성전을 건축하는 기념비적인 과업을 감독하는 것이었습니다(역대상 28:8-10).

솔로몬의 마음이 떨리고 있다는 것을 안 다윗은 아들에게 아주 효과적인 말을 해주었습니다. “강하고 담대하라......두려워하지 말며 놀라지 말라...... 여호와 하나님 나의 하나님이 너와 함께 계신다” (20절). 진정한 용기는 솔로몬 자신의 능력이나 자신감으로부터 오는 것이 결코 아니라, 하나님의 임재와 능력을 의지하는 데서 오는 것입니다. 하나님은 솔로몬에게 필요한 용기를 주셨습니다.

어려운 일을 당할 때 종종 우리는 담대함을 억지로 이끌어내거나 스스로 용감하다고 자기최면을 겁니다. 하지만 우리의 믿음을 새롭게 해주시는 분은 바로 하나님이십니다. 그분은 우리와 함께하실 것이고 그분의 존재가 우리에게 용기를 불러일으켜 줍니다.

The Call to Courage

Among a display of male statues (Nelson Mandela, Winston Churchill, Mahatma Gandhi, and others) in London’s Parliament Square, stands a lone statue of a woman. The solitary woman is Millicent Fawcett, who fought for the right of women to vote. She’s immortalized in bronze— holding a banner displaying words she offered in a tribute to a fellow suffragist: “Courage calls to courage everywhere.” Fawcett insisted that one person’s courage emboldens others—calling timid souls into action.

As David prepared to hand his throne over to his son Solomon, he explained the responsibilities that would soon rest heavy on his shoulders. It’s likely Solomon quivered under the weight of what he faced: leading Israel to follow all God’s instructions, guarding the land God had entrusted to them, and overseeing the monumental task of building the temple (1 CHRONICLES 28:8–10).

Knowing Solomon’s trembling heart, David offered his son powerful words: “Be strong and courageous . . . . Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD God, my God, is with you” (V 20). Real courage would never arise from Solomon’s own skill or confidence but rather from relying on God’s presence and strength. God provided the courage Solomon needed.

When we face hardship, we often try to drum up boldness or talk ourselves into bravery. God, however, is the one who renews our faith. He will be with us. And His presence calls us to courage.

족쇄에 묶였지만 침묵하지 않는

1963년 여름, 민권운동가 패니 루 하머와 다른 여섯 명의 흑인이 밤새 버스를 타고 미시시피 주 위노나에 도착해 식사를 하러 어느 식당 앞에 멈췄습니다. 경찰이 이들을 강제로 그곳에서 쫓아낸 후, 체포하여 감옥에 가두었습니다. 그러나 굴욕은 불법체포만으로 끝나지 않았습니다. 모두가 혹독하게 구타당했는데, 그 중 패니가 가장 심하게 당했습니다. 잔인한 폭행으로 거의 죽게 된 이 여인에게서 갑자기 노래가 터져 나왔습니다. “바울과 실라가 감옥에 갇혔네, 내 백성들을 가게 하라.” 그런데 노래를 부른 사람은 패니 혼자만이 아니었습니다. 육체는 매였지만 영혼은 그렇지 않았던 다른 죄수들이 그 여인의 예배에 동참했습니다.

사도행전 16장을 보면, 바울과 실라는 사람들에게 예수님을 전했다는 이유로 투옥되어 힘든 상황에 있게 되었습니다. 그러나 불편하다고 해서 그들의 믿음이 꺾이지 않았습니다. “한밤중에 바울과 실라가 기도하고 하나님을 찬송하매”(25절). 담대하게 예배드림으로써 그들은 계속해서 예수님을 전할 수 있는 기회가 주어졌습니다. “주의 말씀을 [간수와] 그 집에 있는 모든 사람에게 전하더라”(32절).

우리 대부분이 바울이나 실라나 패니가 당면했던 극한 상황에 처해지지는 않겠지만, 개인 나름대로 곤란한 처지에 있을 수 있습니다. 그럴 때 우리는 신실하신 우리 하나님으로부터 힘을 얻을 수 있습니다. 그분을 높여드리고 그분을 대변할 수 있게 하는 담대함을 가져다 줄 마음속의 노래가 우리에게도 있기를 바랍니다. 힘든 상황에 있을 때라도 말입니다.

Shackled but Not Silent

In the summer of 1963, after an all-night bus ride, civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer and six other black passengers stopped to eat at a diner in Winona, Mississippi. After law enforcement officers forced them to leave, they were arrested and jailed. But the humiliation wouldn’t end with unlawful arrest. All received severe beatings, but Fannie’s was the worst. After a brutal attack that left her near death she burst out in song: “Paul and Silas was bound in jail, let my people go.” And she didn’t sing alone. Other prisoners, restrained in body but not in soul, joined her in worship.

According to Acts 16, Paul and Silas found themselves in a difficult place when they were imprisoned for telling others about Jesus. But discomfort didn’t dampen their faith. “About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God” (V 25). Their bold worship created the opportunity to continue to talk about Jesus. “Then they spoke the word of the Lord to [the jailer] and to all the others in his house” (V 32).

Most of us will not likely face the extreme circumstances encountered by Paul, Silas, or Fannie, but each of us will face uncomfortable situations. When that happens, our strength comes from our faithful God. May there be a song in our hearts that will honor Him and give us boldness to speak for Him — even in the midst of trouble.

“하나님이 내 생명을 구해주셨다”

아론(가명)은 열다섯 살 때 사탄에게 기도하기 시작했습니다. “사탄과 나는 동반자 관계라고 느꼈어요.” 아론은 거짓말을 하고 도둑질하며 가족과 친구들을 조종하기 시작했습니다. 그리고 그는 악몽도 꾸었습니다. “어느 날 아침잠에서 깨어나 보니 침대 발치에 있는 마귀를 보았어요. 마귀는 내가 시험에 합격하고 나서 죽을 거라고 말했어요.” 하지만 시험을 치루고 난 후에도 그는 죽지 않았습니다. 그는 곰곰이 생각해보았습니다. “내가 보기에 마귀가 거짓말쟁이라는 사실이 확실했어요.”

아론은 아가씨들을 만날 마음으로 어느 기독교인들의 축제에 갔었는데, 거기서 어떤 남자가 그를 위해 기도해주겠다고 했습니다. “그 사람이 기도하고 있을 때 내 몸 안으로 평화가 밀려오는 것을 느꼈습니다.” 아론은 사탄에게서 느꼈던 것보다 “더 강력하고 더 자유롭게 해주는” 무언가를 느꼈습니다. 기도해준 그 남자는 아론에게 하나님께서 계획을 갖고 계시며 사탄은 거짓말쟁이라고 하였습니다. 이 남자의 말은 예수님이 자신을 반대하는 사람들에 대응하실 때 사탄에 대해 말씀하신 것을 반복해서 들려주는 듯 했습니다. “그가 거짓말쟁이요 거짓의 아비가 되었음이라”(요한복음 8:44).

아론은 악마숭배에서 그리스도에게로 돌아왔고, 이제는 “하나님께 속한 자”(47절)가 되었습니다. 아론은 도시 공동체 한 곳을 섬기면서 예수님을 따를 때 달라지는 점을 전파하고 있습 니다. 아론은 하나님의 구원의 능력을 보여주는 산 증거입니다. “나는 하나님이 내 생명을 구해주셨다는 것을 자신 있게 말할 수 있어요.”

하나님은 모든 선하고 거룩하고 진실된 것들의 원천이십니다. 우리는 그분께 향함으로써 진리를 발견할 수 있습니다.

“God Saved My Life”

When Aaron (not his real name) was 15, he began praying to Satan: “I felt like he and I had a partnership.” Aaron started to lie, steal, and manipulate his family and friends. He also experienced nightmares: “I woke up one morning and saw the devil at the end of the bed. He told me that I was going to pass my exams and then die.” Yet when he finished his exams, he lived. Aaron reflected, “It was clear to me that he was a liar.”

Hoping to meet girls, Aaron went to a Christian festival, where a man offered to pray for him. “While he was praying, I felt a sense of peace flood my body.” He felt something “more powerful, and more liberating,” than what he felt from Satan. The man who prayed told Aaron God had a plan and Satan was a liar. This man echoed what Jesus said of Satan when He responded to some who opposed him: “He is a liar and the father of lies” (JOHN 8:44).

Aaron turned to Christ from Satanism and now “belongs to God” (V 47). He ministers in an urban community, sharing the difference following Jesus makes. He’s a living testament of God’s saving power: “I can say with confidence that God saved my life.”

God is the source of all that is good, holy, and true. We can turn to Him to find truth.

돌로 침

리사는 자신이 결혼생활에 매우 만족하지 못하고 위험한 유혹에 넘어가지 않기 위해 애쓰는 상황에 빠지기 전까지는 배우자 몰래 바람을 피우는 사람들에게 일말의 동정도 느끼지 않았습니다. 그런 고통스러운 경험을 하고 나서야 리사는 다른 사람들과 새롭게 공감하는 마음을 갖게 되었고, “너희 중에 죄 없는 자가 먼저 돌로 치라”(요한복음 8:7)는 예수님의 말씀을 더 잘 이해하게 되었습니다.

예수님이 이 말씀을 하신 것은 성전 뜰에서 가르치고 계실 때였습니다. 서기관들과 바리새인들이 간음하다 잡힌 여인을 예수님 앞으로 막 끌고 와서는 이렇게 도전했습니다. “모세는 율법에 이러한 여자를 돌로 치라 명하였거니와 선생은 어떻게 말하겠나이까”(5절). 그들이 이 질문을 한 것은 예수님이 자신들의 권위에 위협이 된다고 여겼기 때문에, 그 질문으로 “고발할 조건을 얻고자 예수를 시험”(6절)하여 그를 제거하기 위한 것이었습니다.

하지만 예수님이 “너희 중에 죄 없는 자가 있으면......”이라고 대응하시자 그 여인을 고발했던 사람들 중 어느 누구도 돌을 집어들지 못했습니다. 그들은 하나하나 그 자리를 떠났습니다.

우리가 자기들의 죄는 가볍게 여기면서 다른 사람의 행동을 비판적으로 판단하기 전에, 우리 모두가 “하나님의 영광에 이르지 못하”(로마서 3:23)는 자들임을 기억합시다. 우리 구주께서는 정죄하는 대신 이 여인에게, 아니 우리 모두에게 은혜와 소망을 보여주셨습니다 (요한복음 3:16; 8:10-11). 우리도 어떻게 다른 사람들에게 이와 똑같이 하지 않을 수 있겠습니까?

Throwing Stones

Lisa felt no sympathy for those who cheated on their spouse . . . until she found herself deeply unsatisfied with her marriage and struggling to resist a dangerous attraction. That painful experience helped her gain a new compassion for others and greater understanding of Christ’s words: “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone” (JOHN 8:7).

Jesus was teaching in the temple courts when He made that statement. A group of teachers of the law and Pharisees had just dragged a woman caught in adultery before Him and challenged, “In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” (V 5). Because they considered Jesus a threat to their authority, the question was “a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him” (V 6)—and getting rid of Him.

Yet when Jesus replied, “Let any one of you who is without sin . . .” not one of the woman’s accusers could bring themselves to pick up a stone. One by one, they walked away.

Before we critically judge another’s behavior while looking lightly at our own sin, let’s remember that all of us “fall short of the glory of God” (ROMANS 3:23). Instead of condemnation, our Savior showed this woman—and you and me—grace and hope (JOHN 3:16; 8:10–11). How can we not do the same for others?

금식의 진정한 의미

너무나 배가 고파 신경이 물어뜯기는 듯 했습니다. 나의 멘토는 하나님께 집중하기 위한 방법으로 금식을 권했습니다. 그러나 하루가 지났을 때 나는 궁금했습니다. ‘예수님은 어떻게 사십 일 동안 이렇게 하셨을까?’ 나는 평안과 힘과 인내심을 달라고 성령님께 의지하며 매달렸습니다. 특히 인내심을 달라고 했습니다

우리가 육체적으로 감당할 수만 있다면, 금식으로 영적 양식의 중요성을 배울 수 있습니다. 예수님은 말씀 하셨습니다. “사람이 떡으로만 살 것이 아니요 하나님의 입으로부터 나오는 모든 말씀으로 살 것이라”(마태복음 4:4). 하지만 내가 직접 터득했던 바, 금식 그 자체만으로는 우리가 반드시 하나님께 더 가까이 갈 수 없다는 것입니다!

사실, 하나님께서 한 번은 스가랴 선지자를 통해 이스라엘 백성들에게 그들이 금식하는 것이 가난한 사람들을 섬기는 것으로 이어지지 않기 때문에 아무 소용이 없다고 말씀하셨습니다. “그 금식이 나를 위하여, 나를 위하여 한 것이냐”(스가랴 7:5) 라고 하나님이 예리하게 물으셨습니다.

하나님은 그러한 질문을 하면서 중요한 문제는 그들 백성들의 배가 아니라 그들의 차가운 마음이라는 것을 보여주셨습니다. 그들은 자신만을 계속 섬겼기 때문에 하나님의 마음에 더 가까이 다가가지 못하고 있었습니다. 그래서 하나님은 이렇게 강력히 권고하셨습니다. “너희는 진실한 재판을 행하며 서로 인애와 긍휼을 베풀며 과부와 고아와 나그네와 궁핍한 자를 압제하지 말라”(9-10절).

어떠한 영적 훈련이든 우리의 목표는 예수님께 더 가까이 다가가는 것입니다. 우리가 예수님과 닮은 모습으로 자라갈 때, 우리는 주님이 사랑하는 사람들을 위하는 마음을 갖게 될 것입니다.

The Heart of Fasting

Hunger pangs gnawed at my nerves. My mentor had recommended fasting as a way to focus on God. But as the day wore on, I wondered: How did Jesus do this for forty days? I struggled to rely on the Holy Spirit for peace, strength, and patience. Especially patience.

If we’re physically able, fasting can teach us the importance of our spiritual food. As Jesus said, “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God” (MATTHEW 4:4). Yet, as I learned firsthand, fasting on its own doesn’t necessarily draw us closer to God!

In fact, God once told His people through the prophet Zechariah that their practice of fasting was useless since it wasn’t leading to service for the poor. “Was it really for me that you fasted?” God asked pointedly (ZECHARIAH 7:5).

God’s question revealed that the primary problem wasn’t their stomachs; it was their cold hearts. By continuing to serve themselves, they were failing to draw closer to God’s heart. So He urged them, “Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another. Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the poor” (VV 9–10).

Our goal in any spiritual discipline is to draw closer to Jesus. As we grow in likeness to Him, we’ll gain a heart for those He loves.

적어도 런던 동물원에 따르면 인간은 특별하지 않습니다. 2005 년 이 동물원은 “자연환경 속의 인간들”이라는 제목의 전시를 4일간 진행했습니다. “포획된” 인간들은 온라인 콘테스트를

다윗은 시편 139편을 자신에 대해 친밀하게 알고 계시는 하나님 (1-6절)과 모든 것을 아우르며 임재하시는 하나님(7-12절)을 송축하며 시작합니다. 하나님은 전문 직공처럼 다윗의 내적, 외적 모습을 복잡하게 만드셨을 뿐 아니라(13-14절) 그를 살아 있는 영혼으로 만들어 영적인 삶과 하나님과 친밀한 관계를 맺을 수 있는 능력을 부여해주셨습니다. 다윗은 하나님께서 손으로 빚으신 것들을 묵상하면서 경외심과 놀라움, 그리고 찬양으로 응답했습니다(14절).

인간은 특별합니다. 하나님은 우리를 놀라우리만큼 특별하고도 경이로운 능력으로 우리를 창조하셔서 그분과 친밀한 관계를 갖게 하셨습니다. 다윗처럼 우리가 그분을 찬양할 수 있는 것은 우리가 그분의 사랑의 손길로 만들어진 작품이기 때문입니다.

Marvelously Unique

Human beings are not special—at least according to the London Zoo. In 2005, the zoo introduced a four-day exhibit: “Humans in Their Natural Environment.” The human “captives” were chosen through an online contest. To help visitors understand the humans, the zoo workers created a sign detailing their diet, habitat, and threats. According to the zoo’s spokesperson, the goal of the exhibit was to downplay the uniqueness of human beings. One participant in the exhibit seemed to agree. “When they see humans as animals, here, it kind of reminds them that we’re not that special.”

What a stark contrast to what the Bible says about human beings: God “fearfully and wonderfully” made us in “his image” (PSALM 139:14; GENESIS 1:26–27).

David began Psalm 139 by celebrating God’s intimate knowledge of him (VV 1–6) and His all-encompassing presence (VV 7–12). Like a master weaver, God not only formed the intricacies of David’s internal and external features (VV 13–14), but He also made him a living soul, giving spiritual life and the ability to intimately relate to God. Meditating on God’s handiwork, David responded in awe, wonder, and praise (V 14).

Human beings are special. God created us with marvelous uniqueness and the awesome ability to have an intimate relationship with Him. Like David, we can praise Him because we’re the workmanship of His loving hands.

하나님의 탈출구

탐정 에르퀼 푸아로가 등장하는 애거서 크리스티의 추리소설 ‘시계들’에는 연쇄 살인을 저지르는 범인들이 두드러지게 묘사되어 있습니다. 범인들의 원래 계획은 한 사람만 죽이는 것이었지만, 첫 범행을 은폐하기 위해 더 많은 사람들을 죽이기 시작했습니다. 푸아로가 공모자 중의 한 사람을 다그치자 그는 “원래 한 사람만 죽이기로 되어 있었습니다.”라고 자백했습니다.

이 이야기 속의 음모자들처럼 종교 지도자들도 음모를 꾸몄습니다. 예수님이 나사로를 다시 살리신 후(요한복음 11:38-44) 그들은 긴급회동을 갖고 예수님을 죽일 모의를 했습니다(45-53절). 그러나 그들은 여기에서 멈추지 않고, 예수님이 부활하신 후 묘지에서 일어난 일에 대해 거짓말을 퍼트렸고(마태복음 28:12-15), 그 다음에는 예수님을 따르는 자들의 입을 막기 위한 활동을 하기 시작했습니다 (사도행전 7:57-8:3). 나라의 “보다 큰 유익”을 위해 한 사람을 없애려는 종교적 음모로 시작된 것이 거짓말과 속임수와 많은 희생을 낳는 복잡한 상황이 되어버렸습니다.

Divine Escape

Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot mystery The Clocks features antagonists who commit a series of murders. Although their initial plot targeted a single victim, they began taking more lives in order to cover up the original crime. When confronted by Poirot, a conspirator confessed, “It was only supposed to be the one murder.”

Like the schemers in the story, the religious authorities formed a conspiracy of their own. After Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead (JOHN 11:38–44), they called an emergency meeting and plotted to kill Him (VV 45–53). But they didn’t stop there. After Jesus rose from the dead, the religious leaders spread lies about what happened at the grave (MATTHEW 28:12–15). Then they began a campaign to silence Jesus’s followers (ACTS 7:57–8:3). What started as a religious plot against one man for the “greater good” of the nation became a web of lies, deceit, and multiple casualties.

Sin plunges us down a road that often has no end in sight, but God always provides a way of escape. When Caiaphas the high priest said, “It is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish” (JOHN 11:50), he didn’t understand the profound truth of his words. The conspiracy of the religious leaders would help bring about the redemption of mankind.

Jesus saves us from sin’s vicious grip. Have you received the freedom He offers?

비뚤어진 첨탑

교회의 첨탑이 비뚤어져 있으면 사람들이 불안해한다고 합니다. 우리가 어떤 친구들을 방문했을 때, 그들은 당당하게 서있던 교회 첨탑이 어떻게 격렬한 폭풍으로 비뚤어져서 꽤나 불안해했던 이야기를 해주었습니다.

물론 교회는 그 처져있는 첨탑을 빨리 고쳤지만, 그 우스꽝스러웠을 모습은 나로 하여금 생각하게 만들었습니다. 종종 교회는 모든 것이 완벽해 보여야 하는 곳으로 여겨지고 있습니다. 즉 교회는 우리가 비뚤어지게 보일 수 있는 곳으로 여겨지지 않는다는 것입니다. 그렇지 않습니까?

하지만 타락하고 망가진 세상에서 우리 모두는 타고날 때 지니고 나온 각자 나름의 허물로 ‘비뚤어져’ 있습니다. 우리는 충동적으로 자신의 약점들을 감추려고 할지 모르지만, 성경은 그와 반대되는 태도를 권유하고 있습니다. 예를 들어, 고린도후서 12장에서 바울은 우리가 약할 때 그리스도께서 그분의 능력을 가장 잘 드러낼 수 있다고 말합니다. 바울에게는 그의 약함이 “내 육체의 가시”(7절)라고 부르는 모종의 고통이었습니다. 예수님도 바울에게 “내 능력이 약한 데서 온전하여짐이라”(9절)라고 말씀하셨습니다. 그래서 바울은 이렇게 결론을 내렸습니다. “내가 그리스도를 위하여 약한 것들과 능욕과 궁핍과 박해와 곤고를 기뻐하노니 이는 내가 약한 그때에 강함이라”(10절).

The Crooked Steeple

Turns out that crooked church steeples make people nervous. When we visited some friends, they shared how, after a fierce windstorm, their church’s proud steeple was crooked, causing some alarm.

Of course, the church quickly repaired the flagging spire, but the humorous image got me thinking. Often church is seen as a place where everything is expected to look perfect; it’s not seen as a place where we can show up crooked. Right?

But in a fallen, broken world, all of us are “crooked,” each with our own collection of natural weaknesses. We might be tempted to keep our vulnerabilities under wraps, but Scripture encourages the opposite attitude. In 2 Corinthians 12, for example, Paul suggests that it’s in our weaknesses—for him, an unnamed struggle he calls a “thorn in my flesh” (V 7)—that Christ is most likely to reveal His power. Jesus had told Paul, “My power is made perfect in weakness” (V 9). So Paul concluded, “For Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong” (V 10).

We may not like our imperfections, but hiding them only denies Jesus’s power to work within those aspects of ourselves. When we invite Jesus into the crooked places in us, He gently mends and redeems in ways our effort could never accomplish.

우리는 서로가 필요하다

우리 아이들과 산행을 하던 중, 길가에 작은 군락을 이루어 자라고 있는 밝고 생기 있는 녹색 식물을 발견했습니다. 표지판에는 이 식물이 보통 사슴이끼라고 불린다고 되어 있지만 실제로는 전혀 이끼가 아닙니다. 그것은 지의류입니다. 지의류란 곰팡이와 해조류라는 두 유기체가 서로에게 유익을 주는 상호 관계 속에서 함께 자라는 것입니다. 고산 지역에서는 곰팡이나 해조류가 따로 살아남을 수 없지만 둘이 함께 강한 식물을 형성하여 4,500년간이나 살 수 있습니다. 이 식물은 가뭄과 저온을 견딜 수 있기 때문에 한 겨울에 순록의 유일한 식량 공급원이 되고 있습니다.

곰팡이와 해조류의 관계에서 나는 우리의 인간관계를 떠올려봅니다. 우리는 서로 의존하고 있으며, 성장하고 번영하기 위해 상호 관계 속에 있어야 합니다.

바울은 골로새의 성도들에게 편지하면서 우리의 관계가 어떠해야 하는지에 대해 기술하고 있습니다. 우리는 “긍휼과 자비와 겸손과 온유와 오래 참음”의 옷을 입어야 합니다(골로새서 3:12). 서로를 용서하면서 “한 몸의 지체로” 평화롭게 살아야 합니다(15절).

가족이나 친구들과 평화롭게 사는 것이 항상 쉬운 것은 아닙니다. 그러나 성령께서 힘주셔서 우리의 관계 속에서 겸손과 용서를 나타내게 하시면, 서로를 향한 우리의 사랑은 그리스도를 드러내고(요한복음 13:35) 하나님께 영광을 돌리게 됩니다.

We Need Each Other

While on a hike with my kids, we discovered a light, springy green plant growing in small clumps on the trail. According to a signpost, the plant is commonly called deer moss, but it’s not actually a moss at all. It’s a lichen. A lichen is a fungus and an alga growing together in a mutualistic relationship in which both organisms benefit from each other. Neither the fungus nor the alga can survive on its own, but together they form a hardy plant that can live in some alpine areas for up to 4,500 years. Because the plant can withstand drought and low temperatures, it’s one of the only food sources for caribou (reindeer) in deep winter.

The relationship between the fungus and the alga reminds me of our human relationships. We rely on each other. To grow and flourish, we need to be in relationship with each other.

Paul, writing to believers in Colossae, describes how our relationships should look. We are to clothe ourselves with “compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience” (COLOSSIANS 3:12). We ought to forgive each other and live in peace “as members of one body” (V 15).

It’s not always easy to live in peace with our families or friends. But when the Spirit empowers us to exhibit humility and forgiveness in our relationships, our love for each other points to Christ (JOHN 13:35) and brings glory to God.
