하나님의 지혜가 담긴 목적

영국은 역사의 나라입니다. 어디를 가든 역사적인 인물을 기리거나 중요한 사건이 일어난 장소를 기념하는 현판을 볼 수 있습니다. 그런데 그 중에는 영국인의 유머 감각을 잘 보여주는 재미있는 작은 현판이 하나 있습니다. 영국 샌드위치시에 있는 한 숙박집의 오래된 현판에는 다음과 같은 메시지가 새겨져 있습니다. “이 장소에서 1782년 9월 5일 아무 일도 일어나지 않았음.”

우리는 기도를 해도 아무 일도 안 일어난다고 여겨질 때가 가끔 있습니다. 그래서 지금 당장 응답해 달라고 하나님께 기도 제목을 가져가 기도하고 또 기도합니다. 시편 기자 다윗도 그런 실망감을 이렇게 표현했습니다. “여호와여 어느 때까지니이까 나를 영원히 잊으시나이까 주의 얼굴을 나에게서 어느 때까지 숨기시겠나이까”(시편 13:1). 우리도 그와 같은 생각을 쉽게 품을 수 있습니다. ‘주여, 얼마나 기다려야 응답해 주실 건가요?’

그러나 우리 하나님은 지혜뿐 아니라 때에 있어서도 완전하신 분입니다. 그래서 다윗은 이렇게 고백할 수 있었습니다. “나는 오직 주의 사랑을 의지하였사오니 나의 마음은 주의 구원을 기뻐하리이다”(5절). 전도서 3장 11절은 “하나님이 모든 것을 지으시되 때를 따라 아름답게 하셨다”고 상기시켜 줍니다. ‘아름답다’는 말은 “적절하다” 또는 “기쁨의 원천”이라는 뜻입니다. 하나님은 항상 우리가 원하는 때에 기도에 응답하시지는 않지만, 반드시 그분의 지혜가 담긴 목적을 이루십니다. 하나님이 응답하실 때 그것이 옳고 선하고 아름다울 것임을 알기에 우리는 안심할 수 있습니다.

GOD’S WISE PURPOSES

The United Kingdom brims with history. Everywhere you go, you see plaques honoring historic figures or commemorat- ing sites where important events occurred. But one such sign exemplifies the droll British sense of humor. On a weathered plaque outside a bed and breakfast in Sandwich, England, a message reads, “On this site, Sept. 5, 1782, nothing happened.”

Sometimes it seems to us that nothing is happening regarding our prayers. We pray and pray, bringing our petitions to our Father with expectation that He’ll respond—right now. The psalmist David expressed such frustration when he prayed, “How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?” (PSALM 13:1). We can easily echo those same thoughts: How long, Lord, before you respond?

However, our God is not only perfect in His wisdom but also in His timing. David was able to say, “I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation” (V. 5). Ecclesiastes 3:11 reminds us, “[God] has made everything beautiful in its time.” The word beautiful means “appropriate” or “a source of delight.” God may not always respond to our prayers when we’d like Him to, but He’s always working out His wise purposes. We can take heart that when He does answer, it will be right and good and beautiful. - BILL CROWDER

기도하게 만드는 상황

한번은 직장 동료가 우리의 상사 때문에 기도 생활을 잘 하고 있다고 했습니다. 나는 까다로운 상사가 친구에게 어떤 영적 비결을 전해 기도생활에 변화를 일으켰다고 생각하여 감동을 받았습니다. 하지만 아니었습니다. 직장 동료인 내 친구의 설명은 이랬습니다. “그가 가까이 올 때마다 기도를 시작하는 거야.” 상사와 대화하기 전에 기도를 더 많이 하니까 기도 생활이 나아졌다는 것입니다. 상사와의 업무 관계가 힘들다 보니 하나님의 도움이 필요한 것을 알았고, 그래서 하나님을 더 찾게 된 것입니다.

힘든 일과 관계 속에서 기도했던 직장 동료의 방법을 나도 따라하고 있습니다. 이것은 또한 데살로니가전서에 있는 성경적인 방법으로, 바울은 예수님을 믿는 사람들에게 “쉬지 말고 기도하라 범사에 감사하라”(5:17-18) 고 말합니다. 어떤 상황에서도 기도는 항상 최고의 방법입니다. 기도는 우리를 하나님과 늘 연결시켜 주고, 우리의 인간적인 생각에 의존하기보다 성령님께 우리를 인도해달라고 초청하는 것입니다(갈라디아서 5:16). 그럴 때 우리는 갈등 앞에서도 “서로 화목하게 지낼”(데살로니가전서 5:13, 새번역) 수 있는 도움을 얻게 됩니다.

하나님이 도와주시면 그분 안에서 기뻐하고 모든 일에 기도하며 자주 감사할 수 있습니다. 이렇게 함으로써 우리는 예수님 안에서 형제 자매들과 더욱 조화를 이루며 살게 될 것입니다.

PROMPTED TO PRAY

Acoworker once told me that her prayer life had improved because of our manager. I was impressed, thinking that our difficult leader had shared some spiritual nuggets with her and influenced how she prays. I was wrong—sort of. My coworker and friend went on to explain: “Every time I see him coming, I start praying.” Her time of prayer had improved because she prayed more before each conversation with him. She knew she needed God’s help in her challenging work relationship with her manager and she called out to Him more because of it.

My coworker’s practice of praying during tough times and interactions is something I’ve adopted. It’s also a biblical practice found in 1 Thessalonians when Paul reminds the believers in Jesus to “pray continually . . . give thanks in all circumstances” (5:17–18). No matter what we face, prayer is always the best practice. It keeps us connected with God and invites His Spirit to direct us (GALATIANS 5:16) rather than having us rely on our human inclinations. This helps us “live in peace with each other” (1 THESSALONIANS 5:13) even when we face conflicts.

As God helps us, we can rejoice in Him, pray about everything, and give thanks often. And those things will help us live in even greater harmony with our brothers and sisters in Jesus. - KATARA PATTON

하나님의 사랑의 손길

건강이 다시 악화되면서 앞을 모르거나 통제할 수 없는 일들에 대한 두려움이 생겼습니다. 하루는 ‘포브스’ 잡지를 읽다가 “지구의 자전 속도”가 빨라지는 것을 연구하던 과학자들이 지구가 “흔들리고 나서 “더 빨리 자전한다”고 발표한 것을 보았습니다. 그들은 “역사상 처음으로 ‘초를 없애기’, 곧 지구의 시간에서 공식적으로 1초를 빼야 할지도 모른다”고 했습니다. 1초 때문에 큰 문제가 생길 것 같지는 않지만 지구의 자전에 변화가 생길 수 있다는 사실은 나에게 큰 일로 여겨졌습니다. 조금만 불안정해도 내 믿음이 흔들리는 것처럼 느껴지기 때문입니다. 그러나 미지의 일들이 아무리 두렵고 환경이 흔들리는 것 같아도 하나님이 통제하신다는 것을 알면 그분을 신뢰할 수 있게 됩니다.

모세는 시편 90편에서 “산이 생기기 전, 땅과 세계도 주께서 조성하시기 전, 곧 영원부터 영원까지 주는 하나님이시니이다”(2절)라고 말했습니다. 모세는 모든 창조물에 대한 하나님의 무한하신 능력과 주권과 권위를 인정하면서 시간이 하나님을 제한할 수 없다고 선포했습니다(3-6절).

하나님과 그분이 만드신 세계에 대해 더 많이 알게 되면 하나님이 시간과 그분의 창조물을 계속해서 얼마나 완벽하게 관리하시는지 알 수 있습니다. 하나님은 우리 삶의 모든 미지의 일들과 새롭게 발견되는 모든 것들에 대해서도
신뢰할 수 있는 분입니다. 만물은 하나님의 사랑의 손 안에서 늘 안전합니다.

IN GOD’S LOVING HANDS

After another health setback, I feared the unknown and uncontrollable. One day, while reading a Forbes magazine article, I learned that scientists studied the rising of the “Earth’s rotation velocity” and declared that the Earth “wobbled” and is “spinning faster.” They said we “could require the first-ever ‘drop second’—the official removal of a second from global time.” Though a second doesn’t seem like much of a loss, knowing that the Earth’s rotation could change seemed like a big deal to me. Even slight instability can make my faith feel wobbly. However, knowing God is in control helps me to trust Him no matter how scary our unknowns or how shaky our circumstances may seem.

In Psalm 90, Moses said, “Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God” (V. 2). Acknowledging God’s unlimited power, control, and authority over all creation, Moses declared that time cannot constrain God (VV. 3–6).

As we seek to know more about God and the wonderful world He made, we’ll discover how He continues perfectly managing time and all He created. God can be trusted with every unknown and newly discovered thing in our lives too. All creation remains secure in God’s loving hands. - XOCHITL DIXON

예수님 안에서의 성장

나는 어렸을 때 어른들은 지혜로워 실패를 하지 않는다고 생각했습니다. ‘어른들은 항상 무엇을 해야 할지를 알아. 나도 언젠가 어른이 되면 무엇을 해야 할지 늘 알게 될 거야.’라고 생각하곤 했습니다. 그런데 “그 언젠가”는 벌써 여러 해 전에 왔는데 나는 여전히 무얼 해야 할지 모를 때가 많은 것을 깨닫습니다. 가족이 아프거나, 직장에서의 문제, 사람 관계의 어려움 등이 있을 때마다 나 자신의 힘으로 해낼 수 있다는 망상은 다 사라지고 내가 선택할 수 있는 것은 한 가지, 곧 눈을 감고 이렇게 나직이 속삭이는 것밖에 없었습니다, “주님, 도와주세요. 어떻게 해야 할지 모르겠습니다.”

바울 사도는 이런 무력감에 대해 잘 알고 있었습니다. 육체의 질병과 같은 삶 속의 “가시”는 그에게 많은 좌절과 고통을 안겨주었습니다. 그러나 이 가시로 인해 바울은 하나님의 사랑과 약속과 축복으로 어려움을 넉넉히 견디고 이길 수 있다는 것을 경험했습니다(고린도후서 12:9). 그는 자신의 약함과 무력함이 패배를 의미하지 않는다는 것을 알았습니다. 오히려 그것을 믿음으로 하나님께 맡겨드리면 하나님은 그것을 도구로 삼아 이런 상황들 가운데 직접
역사하십니다(9-10절).

어른이 된다고 모든 것을 알지는 못합니다. 나이가 들면서 분명 더 지혜가 생기긴 하지만, 결국 우리의 연약함은 우리가 실제로 얼마나 무력한 존재인지를 드러낼 뿐입니다. 우리의 진정한 힘은 그리스도 안에 있습니다. 왜냐하면
“내가 약할 그 때에 오히려 내가 강하기 때문입니다”(10절, 새번역). 진정한 “성장”이란 하나님의 도우심이 필요하다는 것을 깨닫고, 그분이 주시는 능력을 알고 믿고 순종하는 것을 의미합니다.

GROWING UP IN JESUS

As a child, I viewed grown-ups as wise and incapable of failure. They always know what to do, I’d think. One day, when I’m grown up, I’ll always know what to do too. Well, “one day” came many years ago, and all it has taught me is that, many times, I still don’t know what to do. Whether it’s illness in the family, problems at work, or conflict in a relationship, such times have wrested all delusions of personal control and strength, simply leaving me one option—to close my eyes and whisper, “Lord, help. I don’t know what to do.”

The apostle Paul understood this feeling of helplessness. The “thorn” in his life, which may have been a physical ailment, caused him much frustration and pain. It was through this thorn, however, that Paul experienced God’s love, promises, and blessings as suficient for him to endure and overcome his difficulties (2 CORINTHIANS 12:9). He learned that personal weakness and helplessness don’t mean defeat. When surrendered to God in trust, they become tools for Him to work in and through these circumstances (VV. 9−10).

Our being a grown-up doesn’t mean we’re all-knowing. Sure, we grow wiser with age, but ultimately our weaknesses often reveal how truly powerless we are. Our true power is in Christ: “For when I am weak, then I am strong” (V. 10). Truly “growing up” means knowing, trusting, and obeying the power that comes when we realize we need God’s help. - KAREN HUANG

예수님처럼 사랑하기

사람들은 이탈리아 카스니고의 주세페 베라르델리 신부에 대해 말할 때 ‘모두에게 사랑받은 사람’이라 했습니다. 베라르델리 신부는 낡은 오토바이를 타고 마을을 다니며 “평안하고 좋은 하루 되세요.” 하고 항상 먼저 인사하던 사랑받는 사람이었습니다. 그는 다른 사람들의 유익을 위해 지칠 줄 모르고 일했습니다. 그러나 생애 말년에 코로나바이러스에 감염되어 건강이 악화되었고, 이런 그를 위해 이웃들이 인공호흡기를 사서 주었습니다. 그럼에도 상태가 위중해지자 그는 호흡기가 필요한 젊은 환자에게 호흡기를 대신 사용하라고 주었습니다. 남을 사랑하는 것으로 사랑과 존경을 받아온 그의 성품을 누구나 알기 때문에 그의 호흡기 사용 거부 소식에 놀라는 사람은 아무도 없었습니다.

‘사랑하면 사랑받는다.’ 이것은 요한 사도가 그의 복음서에서 계속 들려주는 메시지입니다. 사랑받고 다른 사람을 사랑하는 것은 날씨와 관계없이 밤낮으로 울리는 교회의 종소리와 같습니다. 그리고 요한복음 15 장에서 이 메시지는 정점에 이릅니다. 요한은 모두에게 사랑받는 것이 아니라 모두를 사랑하는 것, 바로 “친구를 위하여 목숨을 버리는 것”(13절)이 가장 큰 사랑이라고 밝히 말합니다.

자신을 희생하며 사랑하는 사람들의 모습은 언제나 감동을 줍니다. 그러나 하나님의 크신 사랑에는 비할 바가 못 됩니다. 그럼에도 예수님이 “내가 너희를 사랑한 것 같이 너희도 서로 사랑하라”(12절)고 하신 도전의 말씀을
잊지 마십시오. 그렇습니다. 모든 사람을 사랑하십시오.

사랑의 하나님, 하나님이 저를 사랑하시는 것처럼 저도 그렇게 사랑하게 하소서.

LOVING LIKE JESUS

He was loved by all—those were the words used to describe Giuseppe Berardelli of Casnigo, Italy. Giuseppe was a beloved man who rode around town on an old motorbike and always led with the greeting: “peace and good.” He worked tirelessly on behalf of the good of others. But in the last years of his life, he had health problems that worsened when he was infected by the coronavirus; in response, his community purchased a respirator for him. But when his condition grew grave, he refused the breathing apparatus, choosing instead to make it available for a younger patient who needed it. Hearing of his refusal surprised no one, for it was simply in his character for a man who was loved and admired for loving others.

Loved for loving, this is the message the apostle John keeps sounding throughout his gospel. Being loved and loving others are like a chapel bell that tolls night and day, regardless of weather. And in John 15, they reach somewhat of a zenith, for John lays bare that it’s not being loved by all but loving all that’s the greatest love: “to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (V. 13).

Human examples of sacrificial love always inspire us. Yet they pale in comparison to God’s great love. But don’t miss the chal- lenge that brings, for Jesus commands: “Love each other as I have loved you” (V. 12). Yes, love all. - JOHN BLASE

겸손에 따르는 것

캐리는 대부분의 교사들처럼 교직에 관련된 일에 많은 시간을 보냅니다. 채점도 하고 저녁 늦게까지 아이들이나 학부모와 면담을 합니다. 그리고 교사들 모임을 통해 동료애도 느끼고 실질적인 도움도 받아가며 교사 일을 이어갑니다. 이렇게 협력해 나가면 어려운 일도 쉬워집니다. 교육자를 대상으로 한 최근 연구에 의하면 함께 일하는 사람들이 겸손한 모습을 보일 때 협력의 유익이 더 커진다고 합니다. 동료들이 자신의 약한 부분을 기꺼이 인정하면 다른 사람들도 자기 지식을 서슴없이 나누게 되고, 결과적으로 그룹내 모든 사람을 효과적으로 도울 수가 있습니다.

성경은 협력을 잘하는 것보다 겸손의 중요성을 더 많이 가르칩니다. “여호와를 경외하는 것”은 하나님의 아름다움과 능력과 위엄에 비교하여 우리가 누구인지를 바로 이해하는 것이며, “재물과 영광과 생명”(잠언 22:4) 을 가져다줍니다. 우리가 겸손하면 공동체로 살면서 세상 경제뿐 아니라 하나님 경제에도 유익이 돌아가는 방식으로 살게 됩니다. 왜냐하면 우리는 같은 하나님의 형상을 지닌 동료의 유익까지 함께 구하기 때문입니다.

우리는 “재물과 영광과 생명”을 얻기 위한 방편으로 하나님을 경외하지 않습니다. 그것은 전혀 진정한 겸손이 아닙니다. 그 대신 우리가 “자기를 비워 종의 형체를 가지신”(빌립보서 2:7) 예수님을 본받으면, 겸손히 함께 협력하는 몸의 일부가 되어 주님의 일을 하고, 주님께 영광을 돌리며, 이웃 세상에 생명의 메시지를 전할 수 있습니다.

HUMILITY’S PERK

Like many teachers, Carrie devotes countless hours to her career, often grading papers and communicating with students and parents late into the evening. To sustain the effort, she relies on her community of colleagues for camaraderie and practical help; her challenging job is made easier through collaboration. A recent study of educators found that the benefit of collaboration is magnified when those we work with demonstrate humility. When colleagues are willing to admit their weaknesses, others feel safe to share their knowledge with one another, effectively helping everyone in the group.

The Bible teaches the importance of humility—for much more than enhanced collaboration. “Fear[ing] the Lord”—having a right understanding of who we are in comparison with the beauty, power, and majesty of God—results in “riches and honor and life” (PROVERBS 22:4). Humility leads us to living in community in a way that’s fruitful in God’s economy, not just the world’s, because we seek to benefit our fellow image bearers.

We don’t fear God as a way to gain “riches and honor and life” for ourselves—that wouldn’t be true humility at all. Instead, we imitate Jesus, who “made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant” (PHILIPPIANS 2:7) so we can become part of a body that humbly cooperates together to do His work, give Him honor, and take a message of life to the world around us. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

짐과 라니다는 캠퍼스 커플이었습니다. 둘은 결혼해 여러 해를 행복하게 살았습니다. 그런데 라니다가 길을 잃기도 하고 약속을 잊어버리는 등, 이상한 행동을 하기 시작하더니 47세에 알츠하이머 초기 진단을 받았습니다. 10년 동안 주 간병인으로 아내를 돌보았던 짐은 “알츠하이머로 인해 내가 결혼 서약 때에는 생각지도 못한 방식으로 아내를 사랑하고 돌볼 기회가 생겼다.”고 말했습니다.

바울 사도는 성령의 은사를 설명하면서 사랑의 미덕에 대해 길게 기록 했습니다(고린도전서 13장). 그는 기계적으로 섬기는 것과 사랑하는 마음에서 우러나오는 섬김을 비교하면서, 권능 있는 말도 좋지만 거기에 사랑이 없으면 그저 소음처럼 무의미하고(1절), “내 몸을 불사르게 내줄지라도 사랑이 없으면 내게 아무 유익이 없다”(3절)고 했습니다. 바울은 이 모든 것을 말하고 나서 “[은사] 중의 제일은 사랑이라”(13절)고 했습니다.

짐은 아내를 돌보면서 사랑과 섬김에 대해 깊이 이해하게 되었습니다. 그가 아내를 매일 돌볼 수 있는 힘은 오직 깊고도 변치 않는 사랑에서 나왔습니다. 이런 희생적인 사랑을 완벽하게 볼 수 있는 유일한 곳, 그것은 바로 우리를 향한 하나님의 사랑입니다. 하나님은 이 사랑 때문에 예수님을 보내어 우리 죄를 대신하여 죽게 하셨습니다(요한복음 3:16). 사랑하기 때문에 할 수 있었던 그 희생으로 우리의 이 세상은 영원히 바뀌게 되었습니다.

MOTIVATED BY LOVE

Jim and Laneeda were college sweethearts. They got married and life was happy for many years. Then Laneeda began to act strangely, getting lost and forgetting appointments. She was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s at forty-seven. After a decade of serving as her primary caregiver, Jim was able to say, “Alzheimer’s has given me the opportunity to love and serve my wife in ways that were unimaginable when I said, ‘I do.’ ”

While explaining the gifts of the Holy Spirit, the apostle Paul wrote extensively on the virtue of love (1 CORINTHIANS 13). He contrasted rote acts of service with those overflowing from a loving heart. Powerful speaking is good, Paul wrote, but without love it’s like meaningless noise (V. 1). “If I . . . give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing” (V. 3). Paul ultimately said, “the greatest [gift] is love” (V. 13).

Jim’s understanding of love and service deepened as he cared for his wife. Only a deep and abiding love could give him the strength to support her every day. Ultimately, the only place we see this sacrificial love modeled perfectly is in God’s love for us, which caused Him to send Jesus to die for our sins (JOHN 3:16). That act of sacrifice, motivated by love, has changed our world forever. - KAREN PIMPO

예수님의 보혈

우리가 만드는 물품에서 ‘빨간’색은 언제나 저절로 생성되는게 아닙니다. 그러면 사과의 생생한 색깔을 티셔츠나 립스틱에 넣으려면 어떻게 해야 할까요? 옛날에는 진흙이나 붉은 암석에서 빨간 색소를 추출했지만, 1400년대에 이르러서는 아즈텍 사람들이 연지벌레를 이용하는 방법을 개발하여 붉은 염료를 만들었습니다. 오늘날 전 세계는 이 작은 곤충에게서 빨간색을 공급받고 있습니다.

성경에서 빨간색은 왕위를 상징하면서도 죄와 수치를 뜻하기도 합니다. 게다가 그것은 피 색깔입니다. 병사들이 “[예수님의] 옷을 벗기고 홍포를 입힐” (마태복음 27:28) 때 이 세가지 상징이 빨간색의 하나의 가슴 아픈 이미지로 합해집니다. 예수님은 자칭 왕이라 조롱받고, 수치를 당하고, 곧 흘리실 핏빛 옷을 입으신 것입니다. 그러나 이사야는 이 주홍빛의 예수님이 죄로 붉게 얼룩진 우리를 구원하실 거라는 약속을 이렇게 예언합니다. “너희의 죄가 주홍 같을지라도 눈과 같이 희어질 것이요”(1:18).

붉은 염료에 사용되는 연지벌레에 대한 또 하나의 사실은 그 곤충의 겉은 우유빛이라는 것입니다. 그 곤충이 으깨어져야만 붉은 피가 나옵니다. 이 작은 사실은 이사야가 했던 다른 말을 떠올려줍니다. “[예수님이] 상함은 우리의
죄악 때문이라”(이사야 53:5).

죄를 전혀 모르시던 예수님이 죄로 붉게 물든 우리를 구원하러 오셨습니다. 예수님이 처참히 죽어 모든 붉은 피를 다 쏟아내셨기 때문에 우리가 눈과 같이 희어질 수 있었다는 사실을 우리는 알아야 합니다.

JESUS’ BLOOD

The color red doesn’t always naturally occur in the things we make. How do you put the vibrant color of an apple into a T-shirt or lipstick? In early times, the red pigment was made from clay or red rocks. In the 1400s, the Aztecs invented a way of using cochineal insects to make red dye. Today, those same tiny insects supply the world with red.

In the Bible, red denotes royalty, and it also signifies sin and shame. Further, it’s the color of blood. When soldiers “stripped [Jesus] and put a scarlet robe on him” (MATTHEW 27:28), these three symbolisms merged into one heartbreaking image of red: Jesus was ridiculed as would-be royalty, He was cloaked in shame, and He was robed in the color of the blood He would soon shed. But Isaiah’s words foretell the promise of this crimsoned Jesus to deliver us from the red that stains us: “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow” (1:18).

One other thing about those cochineal insects used for red dye—they are actually milky white on the outside. Only when they are crushed do they release their red blood. That little fact echoes for us other words from Isaiah: “[Jesus] was crushed for our iniq- uities” (ISAIAH 53:5).

Jesus, who knew no sin, is here to save us who are red with sin. You see, in His crushing death, Jesus endured a whole lot of red so you could be white as snow. - KENNETH PETERSEN

원수를 사랑하기

아브라함 링컨은 미국 남북전쟁으로 여러 나쁜 감정들이 일어나는 것을 보고 남부에 대해 어떤 좋은 말을 하는 게 적절하겠다고 생각했습니다. 그러자 옆에 있던 사람이 깜짝 놀라 어떻게 그럴 수가 있느냐고 했습니다. 링컨은 “부인, 원수를 친구로 만들면 원수가 없어지는 게 아니겠어요?”라고 대답했습니다. 그후 한 세기가 지나 마틴 루터 킹 목사는 링컨의 말을 되새기며 “이것이 바로 구원에 이르는 사랑의 힘”이라고 했습니다.

예수님이 제자들에게 원수를 사랑하라고 하셨을 때, 킹 목사는 주님의 그 가르침에 주목했습니다. 그는 믿는 사람이 자기를 핍박하는 자들을 사랑하는 것은 힘들지만, 이 사랑은 “변함없이 하나님께 온전히 순종”함으로 자라간다고 했습니다. 그는 계속해서 “우리가 이렇게 사랑하면 하나님을 알게 되고 아름다운 그분의 거룩함을 체험하게 될 것”이라고 했습니다.

킹 목사는 “너희 원수를 사랑하며 너희를 박해하는 자를 위하여 기도하라 이같이 한즉 하늘에 계신 너희 아버지의 아들이 되리라”(마태복음 5:44-45)고 하신 예수님의 산상수훈을 인용했습니다. 예수님은 자신의 이웃만을 사랑하고 원수를 미워하던 그 시대의 통념과는 반대로 가르치셨습니다. 하나님 아버지는 그의 자녀들에게 그들을 대적하는 사람들을 사랑할 수 있는 힘을 주십니다.

원수를 사랑하는 것이 불가능하다고 느껴질지 모르지만, 하나님께 도움을 구하면 하나님이 우리의 기도에 응답해 주실 것입니다. 하나님은 우리에게 이 무모하리만큼 급진적인 방법을 받아들일 수 있는 용기를 주십니다. 예수님
말씀대로 “하나님으로서는 다 하실 수 있기”(19:26) 때문입니다.

LOVING OUR ENEMIES

With the American Civil War spawning many bitter feelings, Abraham Lincoln saw fit to speak a kind word about the South. A shocked bystander asked how he could do so. He replied, “Madam, do I not destroy my enemies when I make them my friends?” Reflecting on those words a century later, Martin Luther King Jr. commented, “This is the power of redemptive love.”

In calling disciples of Christ to love their enemies, King looked to the teachings of Jesus. He noted that although believers might struggle to love those who persecute them, this love grows out of “a consistent and total surrender to God.” “When we love in this way,” King continued, “we’ll know God and experience the beauty of His holiness.”

King referenced Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount in which He said, “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven” (MATTHEW 5:44–45). Jesus counseled against the conventional wisdom of the day of loving only one’s neighbors and hating one’s enemies. Instead, God the Father gives His children the strength to love those who oppose them.

It may feel impossible to love our enemies, but as we look to God for help, He’ll answer our prayers. He gives the courage to embrace this radical practice, for as Jesus said, “with God all - AMY BOUCHER PYE

하나님의 신실하심을 보았다

70년이란 최장 기간 영국을 통치한 엘리자베스 2세 여왕이 자신에 대한 전기 중 유일하게 직접 서문을 쓴 ‘섬기는 여왕, 그리고 여왕이 섬기는 왕’이라는 책이 있습니다. 여왕의 90번째 생일을 기념해 출간된 이 책에서 여왕은 나라를 섬길 때 믿음이 어떻게 자신을 이끌어주었는지 자세히 설명합니다. 엘리자베스 여왕은 서문에서 자신을 위해 기도해준 모든 사람들에게 감사를 표하고 하나님의 변함없는 사랑에 감사했습니다. 그리고 “나는 정말로 하나님의 신실하심을 보았습니다.”라는 말로 끝을 맺었습니다.

엘리자베스 여왕의 이 짧은 글은 삶을 통해 하나님의 신실한 돌보심을 인격적으로 경험했던 모든 남녀들의 간증과 아주 흡사합니다. 이것은 다윗 왕이 자신의 삶을 돌아보며 지은 아름다운 노래의 주제이기도 합니다. 사무엘하 22장에 기록된 그 노래는 다윗을 보호하고 공급하시며, 생명이 위험할 때에 구해주신 하나님의 신실하심을 말하고 있습니다(3-4, 44절). 하나님의 신실하심을 경험한 다윗은 “내가 주의 이름을 찬송하리이다”(50 절)라고 썼습니다.

오래 살면서 하나님의 신실하심을 계속 볼 수 있다면 그만큼 더 좋겠지만, 우리는 언제라도 우리 삶을 돌보시는 하나님에 대해 이야기할 수 있습니다. 우리가 살아가는 것이 우리 자신의 능력이 아니라 사랑의 하나님 아버지의 신실하신 보살핌 때문이라는 것을 알면, 우리 마음속에 자연스럽게 감사와 찬양이 흘러나옵니다.

I’VE SEEN GOD’S FAITHFULNESS

Throughout her historic seventy years as Britain’s ruler, Queen Elizabeth II only endorsed one biography about her life with a personal foreword, The Servant Queen and the King She Serves. Released in celebration of her ninetieth birthday, the book recounts how her faith guided her as she served her country. In the foreword, Queen Elizabeth expressed gratitude for everyone who’d prayed for her, and she thanked God for His steadfast love. She concluded, “I have indeed seen His faithfulness.”

Queen Elizabeth’s simple statement echoes the testimonies of men and women throughout history who’ve experienced the personal, faithful care of God in their lives. It’s this theme under- lying a beautiful song King David wrote as he reflected on his life. Recorded in 2 Samuel 22, the song speaks of God’s faithfulness in protecting David, providing for him, and even rescuing him when his very life was in danger (VV. 3–4, 44). In response to his experience of God’s faithfulness, David wrote, “I will sing the praises of your name” (V. 50).

While there’s added beauty when God’s faithfulness is seen over a long lifetime, we don’t have to wait to recount His care in our lives. When we recognize that it’s not our own abilities that carry us through life but the faithful care of a loving Father, we’re moved to gratitude and praise. - LISA M. SAMRA
