장막에서 살기
나는 아름다운 호수가 많은 미네소타 주에서 자라면서 캠핑을 가서 하나님이 창조하신 멋진 자연을 즐기는 것을 아주 좋아했습니다. 하지만 얄팍한 텐트 안에서 자는 것은 별로 내키지 않았습니다. 특히 비가 오는 밤에 텐트에 물이 새어들어 침낭이 축축해지면 더욱 그랬습니다.
우리의 믿음의 영웅들 중 하나는 백 년 동안이나 텐트에서 지냈다는 것을 생각하면 참 경이롭습니다. 아브라함이 75세가 되었을 때 하나님은 아브라함으로 새로운 민족을 이루게 하시려고 그를 자신의 고향에서 불러내셨습니 (창세기 12:1-2). 아브라함은 하나님께서 언약을 지키실 것을 믿었고 그 말씀에 순종했습니다. 그리고 175세에 죽기까지(25:7) 그는 일생동안 고향을 떠나 장막에서 지냈습니다.
우리는 아브라함처럼 유랑하며 살라는 소명은 받지 않았을지 모릅니다. 그리고 이 세상과 이곳에 사는 사람들을 사랑하고 섬기면서 우리는 고향을, 여기 이 땅에 기반을 둔 삶을 더 깊이 체험하고 싶을지도 모르겠습니다. 하지만 아브라함처럼, 바람이 불어 허술한 장막이 펄럭이고 그 안으로 비가 새어들 때 우리는 다가올 도성, “하나님이 계획하시고 지으실 성”(히브리서 11:10)을 믿음으로 바라볼 수 있습니다. 또 아브라함과 같이 우리는 하나님께서 이 창조 세계를 새롭게 하시기 위해 일하고 계시고, 다가올 “하늘에 있는 더 나은 본향”(16절) 을 준비하고 계신다는 소망을 발견할 수 있습니다.

Living in Tents
Growing up in Minnesota, a place known for its many beautiful lakes, I loved to go camping to enjoy the wonders of God’s creation. But sleeping in a flimsy tent wasn’t my favorite part of the experience—especially when a rainy night and a leaky tent resulted in a soggy sleeping bag.
I marvel to think that one of the heroes of our faith spent a hundred years in tents. When he was seventy-five years old, Abraham heard God’s call to leave his country so the Lord could make him into a new nation (GEN. 12:1–2). Abraham obeyed, trusting that God would follow through on His promise. And for the rest of his life, until he died at 175 (25:7), he lived away from his home country in tents.
We may not have the same call as Abraham did to live nomadically, but even as we love and serve this world and the people in it, we may long for a deeper experience of home, of being rooted here on earth. Like Abraham, when the wind whips our flimsy covering or the rain soaks through, we can look with faith for the city to come, whose “architect and builder is God” (HEB. 11:10). And like Abraham, we can find hope that God is working to renew His creation, preparing a “better country—a heavenly one” to come (V. 16). - AMY BOUCHER PYE

시몬의 대답
레퓨지 라빈드라나스라고 하는 남자는 10년 넘게 스리랑카에서 청소년 사역을 담당하고 있습니다. 그는 자주 밤늦게까지 아이들과 함께하며 놀이를 하고 아이들의 말을 들어주고 상담도 하고 가르치기도 합니다. 그는 청소년들과 같이 일하는 것이 즐겁지만 때로 유망한 학생들이 믿음을 떠나는 것을 볼 때면 낙심하기도 합니다. 어떤 날은 누가복음 5장에 나오는 시몬 베드로와 같은 느낌이 들기도 합니다.
시몬은 밤새도록 수고했지만 고기 한 마리 잡지 못해(5절) 낙심되고 피곤했습니다. 하지만 예수님이 “깊은 데로 가서 그물을 내려 고기를 잡으라”(4절)고 말씀하시자 시몬은 “말씀에 의지하여 내가 그물을 내리리이다”(5절)라고 대답했습니다.
시몬의 순종은 주목할 만합니다. 경험 많은 어부인 그는 해가 뜰 때 고기들이 호수 바닥 쪽으로 옮겨간다는 것과 그들이 사용하는 저인망으로는 그 물고기들을 잡을 수 있을 만큼 깊이 그물을 내릴 수 없다는 사실을 알고 있었습니다.
시몬이 기꺼이 예수님을 신뢰했을 때 보상이 뒤따라 왔습니다. 많은 물고기를 잡았을 뿐 아니라 예수님이 누구인지를 더 깊이 깨닫게 된 것입니다. 예수님을 부르는 호칭이 “선생님”(5절)에서 “주여”(8절)로 바뀌었습니다. 실제로 “들음”은 우리들로 먼저 하나님의 역사를 보게 하고, 이어서 하나님께로 더 가까이 이끌어줍니다.
어쩌면 하나님이 당신에게도 “그물을 다시 내려라”라고 요구하고 계시는지도 모르겠습니다. 시몬이 순종했던 것처럼 “말씀에 의지하여 내가 그렇게 하겠습니다.”라고 주님께 대답하는 우리가 되기를 소원합니다.

하나님 아버지, 하나님을 “주님”이라고 부를 수 있는 것은 엄청난 특권입니다. 오늘 주님을 순종하고 신뢰함으로써 주님과 같이 동행하는 것이 무엇을 의미하는지 더 깊이 깨달을 수 있도록 도와주소서.
하나님께 순종하는 삶은 미지의 인생길에 우리의 안내자가 되어주고, 우리를 하나님 곁으로 더 가까이 이끌어준다.

What Simon Said
A man named Refuge Rabindranath has been a youth worker in Sri Lanka for more than ten years. He often interacts with the youth late into the night—playing with them, listening to them, counseling and teaching them. He enjoys working with the young people, but it can be disheartening when promising students sometimes walk away from the faith. Some days he feels a bit like Simon Peter in Luke 5.
Simon had been working hard all night but caught no fish (V. 5). He felt discouraged and tired. Yet when Jesus told him to “put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch” (V. 4), Simon replied, “Because you say so, I will let down the nets” (V. 5).
Simon’s obedience is remarkable. As a seasoned fisherman, he knew that fish move to the bottom of the lake when the sun is up, and the dragnets they used could not go deep enough to catch those fish.
His willingness to trust Jesus was rewarded. Not only did Simon catch a large number of fish, he gained a deeper understanding of who Jesus is. He moved from calling Jesus “Master” (V. 5) to calling Him “Lord” (V. 8). Indeed, “listening” often allows us to see the works of God firsthand and draw closer to Him.
Perhaps God is calling you to “let down your nets again.” May we reply to the Lord as Simon did: “Because You say so, I will.” - POH FANG CHIA

우리 아이가 아장아장 걸을 무렵 처음으로 레몬 조각을 베어 물었을 때, 코를 찡그리고 혀를 내밀며 눈을 질끈 감고 “시-어” 라고 말했습니다.
나는 웃으며 그 레몬 조각을 쓰레기통에 버리려고 손을 내밀어 잡으려고 하였습니다.
그러자 재비어는 “안 돼!”라고 외치며 부엌을 가로질러 잽싸게 도망쳤습니다. “더!” 아이가 입술을 오물거리며 베어 먹을 때마다 레몬주스가 터져 나왔습니다. 내가 질겁하자, 마침내 아이가 내게 그 레몬 껍질을 건네주고 갔습니다.
나의 미각은 인생의 달콤한 시간들만을 편애하는 내 모습을 정확히 보여줍니다. 쓴맛 나는 것은 모두 회피하는 나의 취향은 고통의 신맛을 혐오하는 나와 비슷한 욥의 부인을 떠올려줍니다.
욥은 분명히 환란과 고통을 즐거워하지 않았습니다. 그러나 욥은 가슴이 미어지는 상황 속에서도 하나님께 영광을 돌렸습니다(욥기 1:1-22). 고통스러운 상처가 몸을 괴롭게 할 때에도 욥은 그 고통을 견뎌냈습니다(2:7-8). 그의 아내는 그에게 하나님을 그만 포기하라고 말했지만(9절), 욥은 고통과 괴로움 가운데에서도 주님을 신뢰했습니다 (10절).
인생의 쓴맛을 회피하고 싶은 것은 자연스러운 일입니다. 우리가 상처 입을 때에는 하나님이 원망스럽기도 합니다. 하지만 주님은 고난을 사용하셔서 우리가 어려운 시기를 지날 때 인내할 수 있게 하심으로써 주님을 믿고 의지하며
복종하는 법을 우리에게 가르쳐주십니다. 욥처럼 우리도 신맛 나는 시간 가운데 기대치 않게 만나는 달콤한 맛, 즉 우리의 믿음을 견고하게 해주는 신령한 것을 배우기 위해 고난을 즐거워할 필요는 없습니다.

The Bible in One Year: ECCLESIASTES 10–12 and GALATIANS 1

Sweet and Sour
When our toddler first bit into a lemon wedge, he wrinkled his nose, stuck out his tongue, and squeezed his eyes shut. “Sow-wah,” he said (sour).
I chuckled as I reached for the piece of fruit, intending to toss it into the trash.
“No!” Xavier scampered across the kitchen to get away from me. “Moe-wah!” ( more ). His lips puckered with every juice- squirting bite. I winced when he finally handed me the rind and walked away.
My taste buds accurately reflect my partiality to the sweet moments in life. My preference for avoiding all things bitter reminds me of Job’s wife, who seems to have shared my aversion to the sourness of suffering.
Job surely didn’t delight in hardship or trouble, yet he honored God through heart-wrenching circumstances (JOB 1:1–22). When painful sores afflicted Job’s body, he endured the agony (2:7–8). His wife told him to give up on God (V. 9), but Job responded by trusting the Lord through suffering and afflictions (V. 10).
It’s natural to prefer avoiding the bitter bites in life. We can even be tempted to lash out at God when we’re hurting. But the Lord uses trials, teaching us how to trust Him, depend on Him, and surrender to Him as He enables us to persevere through difficult times. And like Job, we don’t have to enjoy suffering to learn to savor the unexpected sweetness of sour moments—the divine strengthening of our faith. - XOCHITL DIXON

매일의 기도
가수이자 작곡가인 로버트 햄릿은 그의 어머니에게 바치는 “나를 위해 기도하는 여인”이라는 곡을 썼습니다. 그의 어머니는 아침마다 아이들이 학교 버스를 타는 곳에 가기 전 그들을 위해 기도해주었던 것입니다. 햄릿이 그 곡을 노래하는 것을 듣고 한 젊은 엄마가 자기도 어린 아들과 함께 기도하기로 결심했습니다. 그 결과는 흐뭇했습니다! 아들이 집 밖으로 나가기 직전에 엄마는 그를 위해 기도했습니다. 그런데 5분 만에 아이가 돌아왔습니다. 버스를 기다리던 곳에 있던 아이들을 데리고 말입니다! 엄마가 깜짝 놀라 무슨 일인지 물었습니다. 아이는 “쟤들 엄마들은 기도를 안 해줬대요.”라고 대답했습니다.
에베소서에서 바울 사도는 우리에게 “모든 기도와 간구를”(6:18) 하며 기도할 것을 강력히 권고합니다. 많은 아이들은 그들에게 가장 가까운 사람들이 지닌 진실한 믿음을 보고 하나님을 신뢰하는 것을 배우기 때문에, 우리가 매일 하나님을 의지하는 것을 보여주는 것은 가정에서 필수적입니다(디모데후서 1:5). 기도가 무엇보다 중요하다는 것을 가르치는 데에는 아이들을 ‘위해’ 아이들과 ‘함께’ 기도하는 것보다 더 좋은 방법이 없습니다. 그것은 그들이 직접 믿음으로 하나님께 나아갈 강력한 필요를 느끼게 해주는 한 가지 방법이기도 합니다.

The Daily Prayer
Singer/songwriter Robert Hamlet wrote “Lady Who Prays for Me” as a tribute to his mother who made a point of praying for her boys each morning before they went to the bus stop. After a young mom heard Hamlet sing his song, she committed to praying with her own little boy. The result was heartwarming! Just before her son went out the door, his mother prayed for him. In the book of Ephesians, Paul urges us to pray “on all occasions with all kinds of prayers” (6:18). Demonstrating our daily dependence on God is essential in a family since many children first learn to trust God as they observe genuine faith in the people closest to them (2 TIM. 1:5). There is no better way to teach the utmost importance of prayer than by praying for and with our children. It is one of the ways they begin to sense a compelling need to reach out personally to God in faith.

경주를 끝내자
2016년 리우 올림픽에서 5천미터 달리기 선수 2명이 세계의 이목을 집중시켰습니다. 경기 중 약 3,200미터 지점에서, 뉴질랜드의 니키 햄블린 선수와 미국의 애비 다고스티노 선수가 서로 부딪혀 넘어졌습니다. 애비는 빨리 일어났으나 멈추어서서 니키를 도와주었습니다. 두 선수가 다시 뛰기 시작한 지 얼마 지나지 않아 애비가 비틀거리기 시작했습니다. 넘어지면서 오른쪽 다리에 부상을 입었던 것입니다. 이번에는 니키가 멈추어 서서 동료 선수가 경주를 끝낼 수 있도록 격려해주었습니다. 마침내 애비가 비틀거리며 힘겹게 결승선을 지나자, 니키가 기다리고 있다가 그녀를 안아주었습니다. 서로를 격려해주는 정말 아름다운 광경이었습니다!
이 장면을 보며 나는 성경의 한 구절을 떠올렸습니다. “두 사람이 한 사람보다 나음은......혹시 그들이 넘어지면 하나가 그 동무를 붙들어 일으키려니와 홀로 있어 넘어지고 붙들어 일으킬 자가 없는 자에게는 화가 있으리라” (전도서 4:9-10). 영적인 경주를 달리는 우리는 경쟁관계가 아니라 같은 팀의 일원들이기 때문에 더욱더 서로를 필요로 합니다. 어떤 때는 우리가 넘어져 다른 누군가가 일으켜주어야 할 때가 있으며, 또 어떤 때는 우리가 기도하거나 함께 있어줌으로써 누군가에게 격려가 될 수 있습니다.
영적인 경주는 혼자 달려서는 안됩니다. 하나님께서 당신을 누군가의 삶에서 니키나 애비가 되도록 이끌고 계시지 않습니까? 주님의 권고에 바로 응답하면서 경주를 끝내도록 하십시오!

Let’s Finish the Race
In the 2016 Rio Olympics, two athletes in the 5,000-meter race caught the world’s attention. About 3,200 meters into the race, New Zealander Nikki Hamblin and American Abbey D’Agostino collided and fell. Abbey was quickly up on her feet, but stopped to help Nikki. Moments after the two athletes had started running again, Abbey began faltering, her right leg injured as a result of the fall. It was now Nikki’s turn to stop and encourage her fellow athlete to finish the race. When Abbey eventually stumbled across the finish line, Nikki was waiting to embrace her. What a beautiful picture of mutual encouragement!
It reminds me of a passage in the Bible: “Two are better than one . . . . If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up” (ECCL. 4:9–10). As runners in a spiritual race, we need one another—perhaps even more so, for we are not racing in competition with each other but as members of the same team. There’ll be moments where we falter and need someone to pick us up; at other times, someone may need our encouragement through our prayers or presence.

어렸을 때 나는 가끔 엄마가 손수 만들어준 파이 조각의 크기 때문에 형제들과 다투곤 했습니다. 어느 날 아빠는 우리들의 바보 같은 행동을 눈여겨보다가 엄마를 보고 웃으며 접시를 들고는 이렇게 말했습니다. “딱 당신의 마음만큼 큰 파이를 줘요.” 엄마가 웃음을 터트리면서 제일 큰 조각을 아빠에게 주시는 것을 보고 나와 형제들은 놀라서 아무 말 없이 바라만 보았습니다.
우리가 다른 사람들이 가진 것에 집중할때 자주 질투가 생깁니다. 그러나 하나님의 말씀은 우리의 눈이 지상의 소유보다 훨씬 더 큰 가치가 있는 무언가를 바라보게 해줍니다. 시편기자는 “여호와는 나의 분깃이시니 나는 주의 말씀을 지키리라 하였나이다 내가 전심으로 주께 간구하였사오니” (시편 119:57-58)라고 썼습니다. 성령으로 감동된 시편기자는 그 어떤 것도 하나님을 가까이 하는 것보다 중요하지 않다는 진리를 전해주었습니다.
우리에게 무한하신 사랑의 창조주보다 더 좋은 어떤 부분이 있겠습니까? 이 땅의 어느 것도 주님과 비교할 수 없으며, 그 어떤 것도 우리에게서 주님을 떼어낼 수 없습니다. 인간의 갈망은 한없이 공허합니다. 이 세상에서 “모든 것”을 가질 수 있을지 몰라도 여전히 비참합니다. 그러나 하나님이 우리의 행복의 근원이 되실 때 우리는 진실로 만족하게 됩니다. 우리 속에는 오직 하나님만이 채울 수 있는 빈 공간이 있습니다. 오직 하나님만이 우리의 마음에 꼭 맞는 평화를 주실 수 있습니다.

The Best Portion of All
“His piece is bigger than mine!”
When I was a boy my brothers and I would sometimes bicker about the size of the piece of homemade pie mom served us. One day Dad observed our antics with a lifted eyebrow, and smiled at Mom as he lifted his plate: “Please just give me a piece as big as your heart.” My brothers and I watched in stunned silence as Mom laughed and offered him the largest portion of all.
If we focus on others’ possessions, jealousy too often results. Yet God’s Word lifts our eyes to something of far greater worth than earthly possessions. The psalmist writes, “You are my portion, LORD ; I have promised to obey your words. I have sought your face with all my heart” (PS. 119:57–58). Inspired by the Holy Spirit, the writer conveyed the truth that nothing matters more than closeness to God.
What better portion could we have than our loving and limitless Creator? Nothing on earth can compare with Him, and nothing can take Him away from us. Human longing is an expansive void; one may have “everything” in the world and still be miserable. But when God is our source of happiness, we are truly content. There’s a space within us only God can fill. He alone can give us the peace that matches our hearts. - JAMES BANKS

세계적인 바이올린 연주자 조슈아 벨에게는 44명의 단원으로 구성된 실내 관현악단인 ‘아카데미 오브 세인트 마틴 인 더 필즈’를 지휘하는 특이한 방법이 있습니다. 그는 지휘봉을 흔드는 대신 다른 바이올린 연주자들과 함께 자신의 스트라디바리우스 바이올린을 연주하면서 지휘합니다. 벨은 콜로라도 공영 라디오 방송에서 이렇게 말했습니다. “나는 연주를 하면서도 그들만이 알 수 있는 온갖 지시와 신호를 보낼 수 있습니다. 그들은 내 바이올린에서의 미세한 동작이나 내가 눈썹을 치켜뜨는 모습, 혹은 내가 바이올린 활을 긋는 것이 무엇을 의미하는지를 압니다. 그들은 내가 오케스트라 전체로부터 어떤 소리를 원하는지를 압니다.”

예수님은 “내가 세상 끝 날까지 너희와 항상 함께 있으리라”(마태복음 28:20)고 약속하셨습니다. 주님이 우리와 늘 함께 하시기 때문에 우리는 주님이 우리 삶의 음악을 지휘하시는 동안 우리의 눈을 주님께 맞출 수 있는 놀라운 특권을 갖게 됩니다.

World-renowned violinist, Joshua Bell, has an unusual way of leading the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, a forty-four-member chamber orchestra. Instead of waving a baton he directs while playing his Stradivarius with the other violinists. Bell told Colorado Public Radio, “Even while I’m playing I can give them all kinds of direction and signals that I think only they would understand at this point. They know by every little dip in my violin, or raise in my eyebrow, or the way I draw the bow. They know the sound I’m looking for from the entire orchestra.”
Just as the orchestra members watch Joshua Bell, the Bible instructs us to keep our eyes on Jesus our Lord. After listing many heroes of the faith in Hebrews 11, the writer says, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith” (HEB. 12:1–2).
Jesus promised, “I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (MATT. 28:20). Because He is, we have the amazing privilege of keeping our eyes on Him while He conducts the music of our lives. - DAVID MCCASLAND

장벽 제거
매주 화요일 내가 감옥에서 출소한 전과자들이 사회에 다시 적응할수 있도록 돕는 일을 하는 “하우스”라는 단체를 방문할 때마다 메리를 보았습니다. 내 삶은 그녀의 삶과는 달라 보였습니다. 그녀는 감옥에서 바로 나와 중독증과 싸우고 있었으며 아들과도 떨어져 있는 상태였습니다. 그녀는 사회의 소외계층이라고 불릴 수 있는 그런 사람이었습니다.
오네시모도 메리처럼 사회에서 소외계층으로 살아간다는 것이 어떤 것인지를 알고 있었습니다. 오네시모는 노예로서 자신의 주인이자 그리스도인인 빌레몬에게 분명한 잘못을 저질러 감옥에 갇혀 있다가, 거기서 바울을 만나 그리스도를 믿게 되었습니다(10절). 오네시모는 이제 변화된 사람이었지만 여전히 노예였습니다. 바울은 그를 빌레몬에게 돌려보내며 그를 “이후로는 종과 같이 대하지 아니하고 종 이상으로, 곧 사랑 받는 형제”(빌레몬서 1:16)로 받아들이라고 설득하는 편지를 썼습니다.

Removing the Barriers
I saw Mary every Tuesday when I visited “the House”—a home that helps former prisoners reintegrate into society. My life looked different from hers: fresh out of jail, fighting addictions, separated from her son. You might say she lived on the edge of society.
Like Mary, Onesimus knew what it meant to live on the edge of society. As a slave, Onesimus had apparently wronged his Christian master, Philemon, and was now in prison. While there, he met Paul and came to faith in Christ (V. 10). Though now a changed man, Onesimus was still a slave. Paul sent him back to Philemon with a letter urging him to receive Onesimus “no longer as a slave, but better than a slave, as a dear brother” (PHILEM. 1:16).
Philemon had a choice to make: He could treat Onesimus as his slave or welcome him as a brother in Christ. I had a choice to make too. Would I see Mary as an ex-convict and a recovering addict—or as a woman whose life is being changed by the power of Christ? Mary was my sister in the Lord, and we were privileged to walk together in our journey of faith.
It’s easy to allow the walls of socio-economic status, class, or cultural differences to separate us. The gospel of Christ removes those barriers, changing our lives and our relationships forever. - KAREN WOLFE

분노 조절
친구와 저녁을 먹으면서 그녀가 자기 가족 중 한 사람에 대해 질려버린 심정을 말하는 것을 들었습니다. 그런 상황에도 친구는 자신을 무시하고 빈정대는 상대방의 짜증스런 버릇에 대해 직접 말하기를 주저했습니다. 마침내 친구가 그 문제를 놓고 직접 따지자 그는 비아냥거리며 반응하였다고 합니다. 그녀는 화가 폭발했고 결국은 둘 다 한 치도 양보하려 하지 않아 가족 간의 거리는 더 멀어져 버렸습니다.
나도 화가 치밀 때 같은 방식으로 대응하기 때문에 그것을 공감할 수 있습니다. 나도 사람들과 그런 문제를 대놓고 말하기가 쉽지 않습니다. 친구나 가족이 심한 말을 하더라도 그 사람이나 다른 사람이 와서 또 다시 심한 말을 할 때까지는 감정을 자제하는 편입니다. 그러다 결국 폭발하고 맙니다.
아마도 이런 이유 때문에 바울 사도가 에베소서 4장 26절에서 “해가 지도록 분을 품지 말라”고 말했나 봅니다. 해결되지 않은 문제를 오래 놔두지 않으면 분노를 조절할 수 있습니다. 잘못된 것을 끌어안고 속을 썩이지 말고 “오직 사랑 안에서 참된 것을 [말하게]”(에베소서 4:15) 도와달라고 하나님께 간구할 수 있습니다.
누군가와 문제가 있습니까? 마음에 품지 말고 먼저 하나님 손에 맡기십시오. 하나님은 그분의 용서와 사랑의 힘으로 분노의 불을 끄실 수 있습니다.

Anger Management
As I had dinner with a friend, she expressed how fed up she was with a particular family member. But she was reluctant to say anything to him about his annoying habit of ignoring or mocking her. When she did try to confront him about the problem, he responded with sarcastic remarks. She exploded in anger at him. Both parties wound up digging in their heels, and the family rift widened.
I can relate, because I handle anger the same way. I also have a hard time confronting people. If a friend or family member says something mean, I usually suppress how I feel until that person or someone else comes along and says or does something else mean. After a while, I explode.
Maybe that’s why the apostle Paul in Ephesians 4:26 said, “Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry.” Providing a time limit on unresolved issues keeps anger in check. Instead of stewing over a wrong, which is a breeding ground for bitterness, we can ask God for help to “[speak] the truth in love” (EPH. 4:15).
Got a problem with someone? Rather than hold it in, hold it up to God first. He can fight the fire of anger with the power of His forgiveness and love. - LINDA WASHINGTON

아버지 이름은?
중동에서 휴대폰을 사러 갔을 때 이름과 국적, 주소 등 통상적인 질문을 받았습니다. 그런데 양식에 기재하던 직원이 나에게 “당신 아버지 이름은 무엇입니까?”라고 묻는 것이었습니다. 나는 놀라서 왜 이것이 중요할까 궁금했습니다. 우리 문화에서는 아버지의 이름을 아는 것이 중요하지 않지만, 이곳에서는 신원확인을 위해 필요했던 것입니다. 어떤 문화에서는 혈통이 중요합니다.
이스라엘 사람들도 혈통이 중요하다고 믿었습니다. 그들은 조상 아브라함을 자랑 스러워했고, 아브라함의 족보에 들어있으면 하나님의 자녀가 된다고 생각하였습니다. 인간적 혈통이 영적인 가계와 연결되어 있다고 생각했던 것입니다.
많은 세월이 지난 후 예수님은 유대인들과의 대화에서 그것이 그렇지 않다는 것을 지적하셨습니다. 사람들이 아무리 아브라함을 육신의 조상이라고 말해도 하나님 아버지가 보내신 이, 곧 예수님을 사랑하지 않으면 하나님의 가족이 아니었던 것입니다.
그것은 지금도 마찬가지입니다. 우리가 육신의 가족은 선택할 수가 없지만, 우리가 속할 영적인 가족은 선택할 수 있습니다. 예수님의 이름을 믿는 자들에게는 하나님의 자녀가 되는 권세를 주십니다(요한복음 1:12).
누가 당신의 영적 아버지입니까? 예수님을 따르기로 결심 하셨습니까? 오늘 예수님을 믿음으로 당신의 죄가 용서받고 하나님의 가족의 일원이 되십시오.

What’s Your Father’s Name?
When I went to buy a cell phone in the Middle East, I was asked the typical questions: name, nationality, address. But then as the clerk was filling out the form, he asked, “What’s your father’s name?” That question surprised me, and I wondered why it was important. Knowing my father’s name would not be important in my culture, but here it was necessary in order to establish my identity. In some cultures, ancestry is important.
The Israelites believed in the importance of ancestry too. They were proud of their patriarch Abraham, and they thought being part of Abraham’s clan made them God’s children. Their human ancestry was connected, in their opinion, to their spiritual family.
Hundreds of years later when Jesus was talking with the Jews, He pointed out that this was not so. They could say Abraham was their earthly ancestor, but if they didn’t love Him—the One sent by the Father—they were not part of God’s family.
The same applies today. We don’t choose our human family, but we can decide the spiritual family we belong to. If we believe in Jesus’s name, God gives us the right to become His children (JOHN 1:12).
Who is your spiritual Father? Have you decided to follow Jesus? Let this be the day you trust in Jesus for the forgiveness of your sins and become part of God’s family. - KEILA OCHOA
