예수 그리스도께서 오늘 부활하셨다!

찰스 시므온은 캠브리지 대학에 다니기 전 승마와 승마 복장을 좋아하여 해마다 그 복장들을 마련하는데 큰 돈을 썼습니다. 하지만 대학에서 정기적인 성찬 예배에 필수적으로 참석해야 했기 때문에 그는 자신이 믿고 있는 것을 점검해보기 시작했습니다. 예수님을 믿는 기독교인들이 쓴 책들을 읽은 후 그는 부활절을 맞아 극적인 회심을 경험했습니다. 1779년 4월 4일 일찍 일어난 그는 “예수 그리스도께서 오늘 부활하셨다! 할렐루야! 할렐루야!”라고 소리쳤습니다. 하나님 안에서 믿음이 성장하면서 그는 성경공부와 기도, 예배 참석에 헌신을 다했습니다.

첫 부활절에 예수님의 무덤에 도착한 두 여인의 삶도 변화되었습니다. 그곳에서 그들은 천사가 돌을 굴릴 때 발생한 큰 지진을 목격했습니다. 천사가 여자들에게 “너희는 무서워하지 말라 십자가에 못 박히신 예수를 너희가 찾는 줄을 내가 아노라 그가 여기 계시지 않고 그가 말씀하시던 대로 살아나셨느니라”(마태복음 28:5-6)라고 말했습니다. 여인들은 매우 기뻐하며 예수님을 경배하면서 제자들에게 복된 소식을 전하기 위해 달려갔습니다.

부활하신 그리스도를 만나는 것은 옛적에만 가능했던 일이 아닙니다. 주님은 바로 지금 여기에서 우리와 만나 주시겠다고 약속하십니다. 우리는 무덤가의 여인들이나 찰스 시므온처럼 극적인 만남을 경험할 수도, 그렇지 않을 수도 있습니다. 예수님이 어떤 식으로 자신을 우리에게 드러내시든, 우리는 주님이 우리를 사랑하신다는 사실을 믿을 수 있습니다.

JESUS CHRIST IS RISEN TODAY!

Before Charles Simeon attended university in Cambridge, England, he loved horses and clothes, spending a huge sum on his attire yearly. But because his college required him to attend regular Communion services, he started to explore what he believed. After reading books written by believers in Jesus, he experienced a dramatic conversion on Easter Sunday. Awaking early on April 4, 1779, he cried out, “Jesus Christ is risen today! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!” As he grew in his faith in God, he devoted himself to Bible study, prayer, and attending chapel services.

On the first Easter, life changed for the two women who arrived at Jesus’ tomb. There they witnessed a violent earthquake as an angel rolled back the stone. He said to them, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said” (MATTHEW 28:5–6). Overjoyed, the women worshiped Jesus and ran back to tell their friends the good news.

Encountering the risen Christ isn’t something reserved for ancient times—He promises to meet us here and now. We might experience a dramatic encounter, such as the women at the tomb or as Charles Simeon did, but we might not. In whatever way Jesus reveals Himself to us, we can trust that He loves us. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

제임스 카비젤이 영화 ‘그리스도의 수난’에서 예수님 배역을 맡기 전, 멜깁슨 감독은 그 배역이 매우 어렵고 또 무엇보다 카비젤의 할리우드 경력에 부정적인 영향을 줄 수 있다고 경고했습니다. 그러나 카비젤은 “예수님 배역이 어렵더라도 우리는 이 영화를 제작해야 한다고 생각합니다.” 라면서 그 역할을 맡았습니다.

영화를 찍는 동안 카비젤은 벼락을 맞았고, 몸무게가 45파운드(약 20킬로그램) 빠졌으며, 채찍질 장면을 찍다가 실제로 채찍에 맞는 사고를 당했습니다. 후에 그는 이렇게 말했습니다. “관객들이 저를 보지 말고 예수님을 볼 수 있기를 바랐습니다. 회심은 그럴 때 일어나니까요.” 그 영화는 카비젤 자신은 물론 촬영 현장에 있던 사람들을 깊이 감동시켰으며, 그 영화를 본 수백 수천 만의 관객들 중 얼마나 많은 사람들이 삶의 변화를 경험했는지는 하나님만이 아십니다.

그리스도의 수난은 종려주일 예수님의 승리의 입성과 배신, 조롱, 채찍질과 십자가에 못 박히는 것까지, 예수님이 겪으신 가장 큰 고통의 시기를 말합니다. 이것들은 4복음서 모두에서 볼 수 있습니다.

이사야 53장에는 주님의 고난과 그 결과가 예언되어 있습니다. “그가 찔림은 우리의 허물 때문이요 그가 상함은 우리의 죄악 때문이라 그가 징계를 받으므로 우리는 평화를 누리고 그가 채찍에 맞으므로 우리는 나음을 받았도다”(5절). 우리는 모두 “양 같아서 각기 제 길로 갔거늘”(6절) 예수님의 십자가 죽음과 부활로 말미암아 우리는 하나님과 화평할 수 있습니다. 주님의 고난은 우리에게 하나님과 함께 할 수 있는 길을 열어주셨습니다.

THE PASSION OF CHRIST

Before Jim Caviezel played Jesus in the film The Passion of the Christ, director Mel Gibson warned that the role would be extremely difficult and could negatively impact his career in Hollywood. Caviezel took on the role anyway, saying, “I think we have to make it, even if it is difficult.”

During the filming, Caviezel was struck by lightning, lost fortyfive pounds, and was accidentally whipped during the flogging scene. Afterwards, he stated, “I didn’t want people to see me. I just wanted them to see Jesus. Conversions will happen through that.” The film deeply affected Caviezel and others on the set, and only God knows how many of the millions who watched it experienced changed lives.

The passion of Christ refers to the time of Jesus’ greatest suffering, from His triumphal entry on Palm Sunday and including His betrayal, mocking, flogging, and crucifixion. Accounts are found in all four gospels.

In Isaiah 53, His suffering and its outcome are foretold: “He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed” (V. 5). All of us, “like sheep, have gone astray” (V. 6). But because of Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection, we can have peace with God. His suffering opened the way for us to be with Him. - ALYSON KIEDA

우리의 대속자 예수님

친구들과 도로에서 경주하며 운전하던 20세의 부유한 청년이 행인을 치어 죽게 했습니다. 그 청년은 이 일로 3년 형을 선고받았지만, 어떤 이들은 법정에 선 사람(그리고 후에 형무소에서 복역한 사람)이 범죄를 저지른 청년이 고용한 대리인이라고 믿고 있습니다. 이런 식으로 죄를 짓고도 형벌을 피하려고 대리인을 고용하는 일들이 일부 국가에서 벌어지고 있는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.

이런 일은 매우 충격적이고 말도 안 되는 일 같이 들리지만, 지금부터 2 천여 년 전 예수님도 우리의 대속자가 되셔서 “단번에 [우리의] 죄를 위하여 죽으사 의인으로서 불의한 자를 대신하셨습니다”(베드로전서 3:18). 하나님께 드리는 죄 없는 희생제물로서 예수님은 주님을 믿는 모든 사람들을 위해 고통받으시고 단번에 그 몸을 드리셨습니다(히브리서 10:10). 주님은 십자가에서 자신의 몸으로 우리의 모든 죄값을 치르셨습니다. 오늘날 돈을 벌기 위해 범죄자를 대신하는 사람과는 달리, 그리스도의 십자가에서의 대속적인 죽음은 우리에게 “희망”을 제공해 주었습니다. 왜냐하면 예수님은 우리를 위하여 아무 조건 없이 기꺼이 생명을 주셨기 때문입니다(베드로전서 3:15, 18; 요한복음 10:15). 예수님은 우리와 하나님 사이에 놓인 깊은 수렁을 이어주기 위해 그렇게 하셨습니다.

JESUS, OUR SUBSTITUTE

A wealthy twenty-year-old was drag-racing with his friends when he struck and killed a pedestrian. Although the young man received a three-year prison sentence, some believe that the man who appeared in court (and who subsequently served a prison sentence) was a hired surrogate for the driver who committed the crime. This type of thing has been known to occur in some countries where people hire body doubles to avoid paying
for their crimes.

This may sound scandalous and outrageous, but more than two thousand years ago, Jesus became our substitute and “suffered once for [our] sins, the righteous for the unrighteous” (1 PETER 3:18). As God’s sinless sacrifice, Christ suffered and died once and for all (HEBREWS 10:10), for all who believe in Him. He took the penalty for all our sins in His own body on the cross. Unlike a person today who chooses to be a substitute for a criminal to get some cash, Christ’s substitutionary death on the cross provided “hope” for us as He freely, willingly gave His life for us (1 PETER 3:15, 18; JOHN 10:15). He did so to bridge the chasm between us and God.

May we rejoice and find comfort and confidence in this pro-found truth: Only by the substitutionary death of Jesus can we—sinners in need—have a relationship with and complete spiritual access to our loving God. - MARVIN WILLIAMS

사랑하라는 새 계명

영국 왕실은 13세기까지 거슬러 올라가는 전통에 따라 성 금요일 전날인 세족 목요일에 어려운 사람들에게 선물을 나누어줍니다. 이 관습은 ‘몬디(maundy)’라는 단어의 뜻에 근거를 두고 있는데, 그 단어는 “명령”을 의미하는 라틴어 ‘만다툼(mandatum)’에서 유래되었습니다. 이 전통을 통해 예수님이 돌아가시기 전날 밤 제자들에게 주신 새 계명, “서로 사랑하라 내가 너희를 사랑한 것 같이 너희도 서로 사랑하라”(요한복음 13:34) 고 하신 명령을 기념하는 것입니다.

예수님은 제자들의 발을 씻어 주심으로 종의 역할을 감당한 지도자셨습니다 (5절). 그러고 나서 주님은 제자들에게도 똑같이 할 것을 요구하셨습니다. “내가 너희에게 행한 것 같이 너희도 행하게 하려 하여 본을 보였노라”(15절). 그리고 더 큰 희생의 행위로 십자가에 달려 돌아가셨습니다(19:30). 예수님은 우리가 온전한 삶을 누릴 수 있도록 자비와 사랑으로 자신을 내어주셨습니다.

어려운 사람들을 섬기는 영국 왕실의 전통은 예수님의 훌륭한 본보기를 따르는 상징으로 계속 이어지고 있습니다. 우리가 특권층으로 태어나지 않았을 지는 몰라도 예수님을 믿으면 그분의 가족이 됩니다. 그리고 우리도 예수님의 새 계명을 따라 삶으로써 우리의 사랑을 보여줄 수 있습니다. 우리 안에 계셔서 우리를 변화시키시는 성령님께 의지할 때, 우리는 다른 사람들에게 다가가 그들을 배려하고 인정하며 은혜를 베풀 수 있습니다.

A NEW COMMAND TO LOVE

In a tradition starting as early as the thirteenth century, members of the royal family in the United Kingdom give gifts to people in need on Maundy Thursday, the day before Good Friday. The practice is rooted in the meaning of the word maundy, which comes from the Latin mandatum, “command.” The command being commemorated is the new one that Jesus gave to His friends on the night before He died: “Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another” (JOHN 13:34).

Jesus was a leader who took on the role of a servant as He washed His friends’ feet (V. 5). He then called them to do the same: “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you” (V. 15). And in an even greater act of sacrifice, He lay down His life, dying on the cross (19:30). Out of mercy and love, He gave Himself that we might enjoy the fullness of life.

The tradition of the British royal family serving people in need continues as a symbol of following Jesus’ great example. We may not have been born into a place of privilege, but when we place our faith in Jesus, we become members of His family. And we too can show our love by living out His new command. As we depend on God’s Spirit to change us from within, we can reach out to others with care, affirmation, and grace. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

그리스도 안에서 열매 맺는 믿음의 사람들

신디는 비영리 회사인 새 직장에서 일하게 되어 마음이 설렜습니다. 변화를 가져올 아주 좋은 기회였던 것입니다! 그러나 신디는 곧 동료들은 자신이 품은 열의를 갖고 있지 않다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 그들은 회사가 사명으로 추구하는 것을 조롱하고 자신들의 낮은 성과를 변명하면서 더 많은 급여를 주는 다른 직장을 찾고 있었습니다. 결국 신디는 이 직장에 지원하지 말았어야 했다고 생각하게 되었습니다. 멀리서 대단해 보였던 것이 가까이 보니 실망스러웠던 것입니다.

오늘의 성경말씀에 언급된 무화과나무를 보며 예수님도 똑같은 문제를 느끼셨습니다(마가복음 11:13). 아직 때가 일렀지만 무화과 나무의 잎사귀를 보면 이른 무화과가 열렸을 수도 있어 보였습니다. 그러나 아니었습니다. 잎사귀는 많이 났지만 아직 열매는 맺히지 않았던 것입니다. 실망하신 예수님은 나무에 저주를 내렸습니다. “이제부터 영원토록 사람이 네게서 열매를 따 먹지 못하리라”(14절). 다음 날 아침 그 나무는 뿌리째 말라 있었습니다(20절).

40일 동안 금식하셨던 적이 있는 예수님은 음식 없이 지내는 법을 알고 계셨습니다. 무화과나무를 저주하신 것은 예수님의 배고픔과는 상관이 없었습니다. 예수님은 무화과나무를 통해 구체적인 교훈을 주신 것입니다. 그 나무는 종교의 겉치레만 있고 핵심을 잃어버린 이스라엘을 상징합니다. 그들은 자신들의 메시아이신 하나님의 아들을 죽이려 하고 있었습니다. 도대체 얼마나 이보다 더 척박해질 수 있을까요?

우리가 멀리서 볼 때는 괜찮아 보일 수 있겠지만 예수님은 가까이 오셔서 오직 성령으로만 맺을 수 있는 열매를 찾으십니다. 우리의 열매가 꼭 대단한 어떤 것일 필요는 없지만, 어려운 시기에 나누는 사랑과 희락, 화평과 같이 지극히 초자연적인 것이어야 합니다(갈라디아서 5:22). 성령님께 의지함으로 우리는 그때 예수님을 위한 열매도 맺을 수 있습니다.

FRUITFUL BELIEVERS IN CHRIST

Cindy was excited for her new job in a nonprofit company. What an opportunity to make a difference! She soon discovered her coworkers didn’t share her enthusiasm. They mocked the company’s mission and made excuses for their poor performance as they looked elsewhere for more lucrative positions. Cindy wished she’d never applied for this job. What looked great from afar was disappointing up close.

This was Jesus’ problem with the fig tree mentioned in today’s story (MARK 11:13). It was early in the season, yet the tree’s leaves signaled it might have early figs. Nope. The tree had sprouted leaves, but it hadn’t yet produced fruit. Disappointed, Jesus cursed the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again” (V. 14). By the next morning the tree had entirely withered (V. 20).

Christ once fasted forty days, so He knew how to go without food. Cursing the fig tree was not about His appetite. It was an object lesson. The tree represented Israel, which had the trappings of true religion but had lost the point. They were about to kill their Messiah, the Son of God. How more barren could they be?

We may look good from afar, but Jesus comes near, looking for fruit that only His Spirit can produce. Our fruit need not be spectacular. But it must be supernatural, such as love, joy, and peace in hard times (GALATIANS 5:22). Relying on the Spirit, we can bear fruit even then for Jesus. - MIKE WITTMER

수십 년 동안 맥도날드는 쿼터(1/4) 파운더 버거로 패스트푸드 시장을 지배했습니다. 1980년대에 에이 앤드 더블유라는 라이벌 회사가 노란 아치 로고의 맥도날드를 패스트푸드 왕좌에서 끌어내리기 위한 아이디어로 맥도날드의 쿼터 파운더보다 더 큰 1/3 파운드 버거를 같은 가격으로 판매하기 시작했습니다. 게다가 에이 앤드 더블유 버거는 눈을 가리고 맛을 평가하는 시식 테스트에서도 여러 번 이 겼습니다. 그러나 그 신상품 버거는 실패했습니다. 아무도 사먹지 않았던 것입니다. 결국 그들은 그 버거를 메뉴에서 빼버렸습니다. 연구 결과 소비자들이 산술적으로 착각하여 1/3 파운드 버거가 쿼터 파운더(1/4 파운드) 버거보다 작다고 생각했기 때문으로 드러났습니다. 이 획기적인 아이디어는 소비자들이 기본을 놓쳤기 때문에 실패하고 말았습니다.

예수님도 우리가 얼마나 쉽게 기본을 놓치는 지에 대해 경고하셨습니다. 예수님이 십자가에 못박히셨던 그 주간에 예수님을 함정에 빠트려 백성들의 믿음을 떨어뜨리려는 음모를 꾸미고 있던 종교지도자들은 일곱 번이나 남편을 잃은 여인에 관한 이상한 가상적 상황을 들이대며 예수님께 물었습니다 (마태복음 22:23-28). 예수님은 이 복잡한 딜레마가 전혀 문제가 아닌 듯 반응하셨습니다. 오히려 그들의 문제는 그들이 “성경도, 하나님의 능력도 알지” 못한다는 것이었습니다(29절). 예수님은 성경은 논리적이거나 철학적인 문제들에 답하기 위해서가 아니라, 그 주 목적이 우리로 예수님을 알고 사랑하여 주님을 통해 “영생을 얻도록” 이끌기 위함이라고 말씀하셨습니다 (요한복음 5:39). 종교지도자들은 이 기본을 놓친 것입니다.

우리 또한 종종 이 기본을 놓치곤 합니다. 성경의 주된 목적은 살아 계신 예수님과의 만남입니다. 이 기본을 놓친다는 것은 정말 가슴 아픈 일입니다.

MISSING THE BASICS

For decades, McDonald’s ruled fast food with their Quarter Pounder burger. In the 1980s, a rival chain cooked up an idea to dethrone the company with the golden arches. A&W offered the Third Pound Burger—larger than McDonald’s—and sold it for the same price. Even more, A&W’s burger won numerous blind taste tests. But the burger bombed. Nobody bought it. Eventually, they dropped it from the menu. Research revealed that consumers misunderstood the math and thought the Third Pound Burger was smaller than the Quarter Pounder. A grand idea failed because people missed the basics.

Jesus warned of how easy it is to miss the basics. Religious leaders, scheming to trap and discredit Him during the week He was crucified, posed a strange, hypothetical scenario about a woman who was widowed seven times (MATTHEW 22:23–28). Jesus responded, insisting that this knotty dilemma wasn’t a problem at all. Rather, their problem was how they didn’t “know the Scriptures or the power of God” (V. 29). The Scriptures, Jesus
insisted, aren’t first intended to answer logical or philosophical puzzles. Rather, their primary aim is to lead us to know and love Jesus and to “have eternal life” in Him (JOHN 5:39). These are the basics the leaders missed.

We often miss the basics too. The Bible’s main aim is an encounter with the living Jesus. It would be heartbreaking to miss it. - WINN COLLIER

다른 사람을 사랑함으로 하나님을 사랑하라

알바 가족은 드물게도 13개월 사이에 일란성 쌍둥이를 연속해서 출산했습니다. 그런 상황에서 그들이 어떻게 부모로서의 책임과 직장 업무를 모두 감당할 수 있었을까요? 친구들과 가족들이 그들을 도와주었습니다. 낮 동안은 양쪽의 조부모들이 각 쌍둥이들을 맡으면서 아이의 부모가 일하며 가족의 건강 보험료를 감당할 수 있게 해주었습니다. 어느 회사는 일년 치 기저귀를 기증했고, 부부의 직장 동료들은 그들의 병가를 양보해 주었습니다. 쌍둥이의 부모는 “이웃 사회의 도움이 없었다면 어떻게 해보지도 못했을 겁니다.”라고 말합니다. 실제로 생방송 인터뷰 중에도 달아나는 어린아이를 뒤쫓느라 공동 진행자가 마이크를 빼고 달려가는 등, 공동 육아는 방송 중에도 계속되었습니다!

마태복음 25:31–46에서 예수님은 한 비유를 통해 다른 사람들을 섬기는 것이 곧 하나님을 섬기는 것이라는 점을 강조하셨습니다. 배고픈 자에게 음식을, 목마른 자에게 마실 것을, 거처가 필요한 이들에게 머무를 곳을, 헐벗은 이들에게 의복을, 병든 이들에게 치료를 제공하는 등(35-36절), 여러 섬김의 행위들을 나열하신 후 예수님은 이렇게 결론적으로 말씀하십니다. “내가 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 너희가 여기 내 형제 중에 지극히 작은 자 하나에게 한 것이 곧 내게 한 것이니라”(40절).

우리의 섬김을 받으시는 분이 결국은 예수님이라는 것을 생각하면 우리 이웃이나 가족, 교회, 그리고 세상을 섬기는 참된 동기가 생겨 납니다. 예수님이 우리에게 다른 사람들의 필요를 위해 희생하며 섬기라고 하실 때, 우리는 그렇게 함으로써 예수님을 섬기는 것입니다. 우리가 다른 사람들을 사랑하는 것은 바로 하나님을 사랑하는 것입니다.

LOVE GOD BY LOVING OTHERS

The Alba family experienced the rare occurrence of birthing two sets of identical twins just thirteen months apart. How did they juggle their parental responsibilities as well as their jobs? Their community of friends and family stepped in. Grandparents on both sides took a set of twins during the day so the parents could work and pay for health insurance. One company gave a year’s supply of diapers. The couple’s coworkers donated their personal sick days. “We couldn’t have done it without our community,” they agreed. In fact, during a live interview, the cohost removed her mic and ran after one renegade toddler, continuing the communal investment!

In Matthew 25:31–46, Jesus tells a parable to make the point that when we serve others, we serve God. After listing acts of service, including providing food to the hungry, drink to the thirsty, lodging for the homeless, clothes for the naked, and healing for the sick (VV. 35–36), Jesus concludes, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (V. 40).

Imagining Jesus as the ultimate recipient of our kindness is true motivation to serve in our neighborhoods, families, churches, and world. When He prompts us to sacrificially invest in the needs of others, we serve Him. When we love others, we love God.

레오나르도 다 빈치는 르네상스를 대표하는 인물입니다. 그의 지적기량은 여러 학문과 예술 분야에 걸쳐 많은 발전을 이루어냈습니다. 그럼에도 레오나르도는 자신의 일기에 “이 비참한 우리의 날들”이라고 적고, 우리는 “우리에 대한 어떤 기억도 사람들의 마음에 남기지 못하고” 죽는다고 한탄했습니다.

레오나르도는 “나는 어떻게 사는지 배우고 있다고 생각했었지만 사실은 어떻게 죽는지 배우고 있었다.”고 말했습니다. 사실 그는 자신이 깨달은 것보다 진리에 더 가까이 가 있었습니다. 어떻게 죽는지 배우는 것이 생명에 이르게 하는 길이기 때문입니다. 예수님은 예루살렘에 승리의 입성을 하신 후 (우리는 지금 이 날을 종려주일로 기념합니다. 요한복음 12:12-19 참조) 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “한 알의 밀이 땅에 떨어져 죽지 아니하면 한 알 그대로 있고 죽으면 많은 열매를 맺느니라”(24절). 예수님은 자신의 죽음에 대해 이 말씀을 하신 것이었지만, 그 다음 말씀으로 그것을 우리 모두에게 확장시키셨습니다. “자기의 생명을 사랑하는 자는 잃어버릴 것이요 이 세상에서 자기의 생명을 미워하는 자는 영생하도록 보전하리라”(25절).

바울 사도는 그리스도와 함께 “장사됨”을 이렇게 기록했습니다. “우리가 [그리스도]의 죽으심과 합하여 세례를 받음으로 그와 함께 장사되었나니 이는 아버지의 영광으로 말미암아 그리스도를 죽은 자 가운데서 살리심과 같이 우리로 또한 새 생명 가운데서 행하게 하려 함이라 만일 우리가 그의 죽으심과 같은 모양으로 연합한 자가 되었으면 또한 그의 부활과 같은 모양 으로 연합한 자도 되리라”(로마서 6:4-5).

예수님은 자신의 죽음을 통해 ‘르네상스’의 원래 의미인 새로 태어남을 우리에게 주십니다. 예수님은 하나님 아버지와 함께하는 영원한 삶으로 가는 길을 구축해 주셨습니다.

RENAISSANCE IN JESUS

We know Leonardo da Vinci as the renaissance man. His intellectual prowess led to advances across multiple fields of study and the arts. Yet Leonardo journaled of “these miserable days of ours” and lamented that we die “without leaving behind any memory of ourselves in the mind of men.”

“While I thought I was learning how to live,” said Leonardo, “I was learning how to die.” He was closer to the truth than he may have realized. Learning how to die is the way to life. After Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem (what we now celebrate as Palm Sunday; see John 12:12–19), He said, “Unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds” (V. 24). He spoke this about His own death but expanded it to include us all: “Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life” (V. 25).

The apostle Paul wrote of being “buried” with Christ “through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his” (ROMANS 6:4–5).

Through His death, Jesus offers us rebirth—the very meaning of renaissance. He has forged the way to eternal life with His Father.

풍성한 사랑

내 비행기 옆자리에 앉았던 여성은 자신은 종교가 없는데 기독교인들이 많이 거주하는 마을로 이주해 오게 되었다고 말했습니다. 이웃의 대부분이 교회에 다닌다는 말에 그곳에서 지내는 게 어떤지 물어보았더니 그녀는 이웃들이 베풀어준 것들을 결코 못 갚을 거라고 말했습니다. 장애가 있는 아버지를 새로운 나라로 데려왔을 때, 이웃 주민들은 그녀의 집에 경사로를 설치해주고 병원 침대와 의료 장비를 기증해주었습니다. 그녀는 “만약 기독교인이 되어 그렇게 친절해질 수 있다면, 모든 사람들이 다 기독교인이 되었으면 좋겠어요.”라고 말했습니다.

그녀의 말은 정확하게 예수님께서 바라시던 것이었습니다! 예수님은 제자들에게 “너희 빛이 사람 앞에 비치게 하여 그들로 너희 착한 행실을 보고 하늘에 계신 너희 아버지께 영광을 돌리게 하라”(마태복음 5:16)고 말씀하셨습니다. 베드로는 그리스도의 그 명령을 이렇게 전달했습니다. “너희가 이방인 중에서 행실을 선하게 가져 너희를 악행한다고 비방하는 자들로 하여금 너희 선한 일을 보고... 하나님께 영광을 돌리게 하려 함이라”(베드로전서 2:12).

예수님을 믿지 않는 이웃들은 우리가 무엇을 믿고 왜 믿는지 이해하지 못할 지도 모릅니다. 그러나 그들이 이해하지 못하는 다른 한 가지, 곧 “우리의 풍성한 사랑”이 있는 한 걱정하지 마십시오. 내 옆자리에 앉았던 그 여인은 자신이 “그들과 같은 부류”가 아님에도 기독교인 이웃들이 자기를 계속해서 돌보아주는 것에 놀라워 했습니다. 그녀는 자신이 예수님 때문에 사랑받고 있다는 것을 알고 하나님께 감사하고 있습니다. 아직 예수님을 믿지 않을지도 모르지만, 그녀는 이웃 사람들이 기독교인이라는 사실에 감사하고 있습니다.

EXTRAVAGANT LOVE

My seatmate on the flight told me she was nonreligious and had immigrated to a town that was home to numerous Christians. When she mentioned that most of her neighbors went to church, I asked about her experience. She said she could never repay their generosity. When she brought her disabled father to her new country, her neighbors built a ramp to her house and donated a hospital bed and medical supplies. She said, “If being a Christian makes one so kind, everyone should be a Christian.”

Exactly what Jesus hoped she’d say! He told His disciples, “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (MATTHEW 5:16). Peter heard Christ’s command and passed it on: “Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God” (1 PETER 2:12).

Our neighbors who don’t have faith in Jesus may not understand what we believe and why we believe it. Don’t sweat it, as long as there’s one more thing they can’t understand: the extravagance of our love. My seatmate marveled that her Christian neighbors continue to care for her even though she isn’t, in her words, “one of them.” She knows she’s loved, for Jesus’ sake, and she gives thanks to God. She may not yet believe in Him, but she’s grateful that others do.

사랑의 다음 단계

누군가가 경쟁 상대를 돕게 되는 경우에는 어떤 것들이 있을까요? 위스콘신에 사는 식당 주인 아돌포의 경우는 그 지역에서 코비드 규제 때문에 힘들어하는 다른 식당 주인들을 격려하기 위함이었습니다. 아돌포는 팬데믹 동안 사업을 운영하는 것이 큰 부담이라는 사실을 경험으로 잘 알고 있었습니다. 지역 내 다른 사업체의 관대함에 고무된 아돌프는 자신의 돈으로 이천 불 이상의 상품권을 사서 자기 손님들에게 나눠주고, 그것을 그 지역의 다른 식당에 가서 사용하라고 했습니다. 말로만 하지 않고 행동으로 사랑을 표현한 것입니다.

요한은 인류를 위해 자신의 생명을 기꺼이 내어 주신 예수님의 궁극적인 사랑의 표현을 기반으로 하여(요한1서 3:16) 우리 역시 다음 단계로 넘어가 사랑을 행동으로 보여줄 것을 권면했습니다. 요한에게 있어 “형제들을 위하여 목숨을 버리는 것”(16절)은 예수님이 본을 보이신 사랑과 동일한 종류의 사랑을 보여주는 것을 의미했습니다. 그리고 그런 사랑은 주로 쓸 것을 나누는 것과 같은 일상적이고 실제적인 행동의 형태를 취합니다. 말로 사랑하는 것은 충분하지 않습니다. 사랑에는 의미 있고 진심 어린 행동이 뒤따라야 합니다 (18절).

사랑을 행동으로 옮기는 것은 종종 개인의 희생이나 다른 사람을 위해 불이익을 감수하는 것이 요구되기 때문에 어렵습니다. 그러나 성령님의 능력을 힘입고 우리를 향한 하나님의 넘치는 사랑을 기억하면 사랑의 다음 단계를 밟아 나갈 수 있습니다.

NEXT STEP OF LOVE

What would cause someone to help a competitor? For a restaurant owner named Adolfo in Wisconsin, it was the opportunity to encourage other struggling local restaurant owners adapting to Covid regulations. Adolfo knew firsthand the challenges of operating a business during a pandemic. Encouraged by another local business’ generosity, Adolfo spent his own money to purchase more than two thousand dollars in gift cards to give away to his customers to use at other restaurants in his community. That’s an expression of love that’s not just words but action.

Building on the ultimate expression of love demonstrated by Jesus’ willingness to lay down His life for humanity (1 JOHN 3:16), John encouraged his readers to also take the next step and put love into action. For John, to “lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters” (V. 16) meant demonstrating the same type of love exemplified by Jesus—and that would most often take the form of everyday, practical actions, such as sharing material possessions. It wasn’t enough to love with words; love required sincere, meaningful actions (V. 18).

Putting love into action can be hard because it often requires personal sacrifice or disadvantaging ourselves for another person. Enabled by God’s Spirit and remembering His lavish love for us, we can take the next step of love.
