우리의 미래를 하나님께 맡기자

2010년에 레즐로 하니츠는 비트코인(당시 1센트도 안 되는 가치의 가상화폐)으로 처음 물건을 샀는데, 피자 두 판(25달러)에 10,000 비트코인을 지불했습니다. 그가 지불했던 비트코인의 가치는 2021 년 연중 최고 시세 기준으로 5억 달러 이상이었습니다. 가치가 급등하기 전까지 그는 계속 코인으로 피자 값을 지불하여 총 100,000 비트코인을 써버렸습니다. 그 비트코인을 쓰지 않고 계속 가지고 있었다면 그는 680억 달러 이상의 재산을 갖게 되어 포브스 잡지의 “세계 부호 목록”에 올랐을 것입니다. 앞으로 무슨 일이 일어날지 미리 알았더라면 말입니다.

물론 하니츠는 그렇게 될 줄 몰랐고, 우리 모두 다 마찬가지입니다. 사람들은 미래를 미리 알아서 인생을 유리하게 조정하려고 해보지만, 전도서는 “앞으로 무슨 일이 일어날지 아는 사람은 아무도 없다”(10:14, 현대인의 성경) 는 진실을 일깨워줍니다. 어떤 사람들은 자신이 아는 것보다 더 많이 안다고 잘못 생각하거나, 더 심한 경우 다른 사람의 삶이나 미래에 대해서 남다른 통찰력을 갖고 있다고 스스로 착각합니다. 그러나 전도서는 “나중에 일어날 일을 누가 그에게 알리리요”(14절)라고 날카롭게 질문합니다. 그럴 수 있는 사람은 ‘아무도 없습니다.’

성경은 지혜로운 사람과 어리석은 사람을 대조하고 있는데, 이 둘을 구분하는 많은 것 중의 하나가 미래에 대한 겸손한 자세입니다(잠언 27:1). 현명한 사람은 결정을 내릴 때 하나님만이 미래에 일어날 일을 진실로 아신다는 사실을 인정하지만, 어리석은 사람들은 자신이 모르는 지식을 안다고 생각합니다. 우리에게 지혜가 있어서, 우리의 미래를 실제로 알고 계시는 유일하신 그분께 우리의 미래를 맡길 수 있기를 바랍니다.

TRUSTING OUR FUTURE TO GOD

In 2010, Laszlo Hanyecz made the first purchase with bitcoin (a digital currency then worth a fraction of a penny each), paying 10,000 bitcoins for two pizzas ($25). In 2021, at its highest value during the year, those bitcoins would have been worth well more than $500 million. Back before the value skyrocketed, he kept paying for pizzas with coins, spending 100,000 bitcoins total. If he’d kept those bitcoins, their value would’ve made him a billionaire sixty-eight times over and placed him on the Forbes’ “richest people in the world” list. If only he’d known what was coming.

Of course, Hanyecz couldn’t possibly have known. None of us could have. Despite our attempts to comprehend and control the future, Ecclesiastes rings true: “No one knows what is coming”
(10:14). Some of us delude ourselves into thinking we know more than we do, or worse, that we possess some special insight about another person’s life or future. But as Ecclesiastes pointedly asks: “who can tell someone else what will happen after them?” (V. 14). No one.

Scripture contrasts a wise and a foolish person, and one of the many distinctions between the two is humility about the future (PROVERBS 27:1). A wise person recognizes that only God truly knows what’s over the horizon as they make decisions. But foolish people presume knowledge that isn’t theirs. May we have wisdom, trusting our future to the only One who actually knows it.

행함이 있는 믿음

2021년 6월의 어느 날 저녁, 토네이도가 한 지역을 강타하여 어느 집 곳간이 파손되었습니다. 1800년대 후반부터 그 집에 있었던 그 곳간이 입은 손실은 참으로 안타까웠습니다. 존과 바브는 다음 날 아침 교회로 가다가 그 피해를 보고 어떻게 도울 수 있을까 생각했습니다. 일단 차를 세우고 보니 그 집 식구들이 곳간을 치우는데 일손이 필요하다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 그들은 바로 차를 돌려 자기네 집으로 가서 옷을 갈아입고 돌아와 강풍에 쑥대밭이 된 그 곳간을 하루 종일 정리했습니다. 그들은 그 집 일을 봉사하면서 믿음을 행동으로 옮긴 것입니다.

야고보는 “행함이 없는 믿음은 죽은 것”(야고보서 2:26)이라고 말하면서, 어디로 가는지도 모르면서 하나님을 순종하며 따랐던 아브라함을 예로 듭니다 (23절; 창세기 12:1-4; 15:6; 히브리서 11:8 참조). 또 여리고 성을 정탐하러 왔던 정탐꾼을 숨겨주어 이스라엘의 하나님에 대한 믿음을 보여주었던 라합도 언급합니다(야고보서 2:25; 여호수아 2; 6:17 참조).

“사람이 믿음이 있노라 하고 행함이 없으면”(야고보서 2:14) 자신들에게 유익이 되지 않습니다. 매튜 헨리는 이렇게 주석합니다. “믿음은 뿌리이고 선행은 그 열매이다. 우리는 이 두 가지를 모두 가지고 있는지 살펴보아야 한다.” 하나님에게 우리의 선행이 필요한 것은 아니지만, 우리의 믿음은 우리의 행위로 증명됩니다.

FAITH IN ACTION

A tornado blew through a community on a June evening in 2021, destroying a family’s barn. It was a sad loss because the barn had been on the family property since the late 1800s. As John and Barb drove by on their way to church the next morning, they saw the damage and wondered how they might help. So they stopped and learned that the family needed assistance with cleanup. Turning their car around quickly, they headed back home to change clothes and returned to stay for the day to clean up the mess the violent winds had created. They put their faith into action as they served the family.

James said that “faith without deeds is dead” (JAMES 2:26). He gives the example of Abraham, who in obedience followed God when he didn’t know where he was going (V. 23; SEE GENESIS 12:1–4; 15:6; HEBREWS 11:8). James also mentions Rahab, who showed her belief in the God of Israel when she hid the spies who came to check out the city of Jericho (JAMES 2:25; SEE JOSHUA 2; 6:17).

“If someone claims to have faith but has no deeds” (JAMES 2:14), it does them no good. “Faith is the root, good works are the fruits,” comments Matthew Henry, “and we must see to it that we have both.” God doesn’t need our good deeds, but our faith is proven by our actions.

책을 거꾸로 읽기

추리소설의 재미를 즐기는 사람들에게는 결말부터 먼저 읽는 것이 좋지 않은 생각일 수 있습니다. 그러나 어떤 독자들에게는 결말을 알면 독서가 더 즐거워집니다.

‘책을 거꾸로 읽기’의 저자 리차드 헤이는 성경을 이해하는 데 이 방법이 얼마나 중요한지를 보여줍니다. 헤이 교수는 성경의 말씀과 사건의 전개가 서로 어떤 복선과 반복과 암시가 있는지 설명하면서 성경을 앞뒤로 읽어야 할 이유를 제시합니다.

헤이는 파괴된 성전을 3일 만에 재건할 것이라는 예수님의 말씀을 제자들이 주님이 부활하신 ‘후’에야 이해했다는 사실을 독자들에게 상기시킵니다. 요한 사도는 그 말씀을 “예수는 성전된 자기 육체를 가리켜 말씀하신 것이라” (요한복음 2:21)고 뒤늦게 말합니다. 그들은 또 이전에는 전혀 이해하지 못했던 유월절 행사의 의미를 나중에야 이해할 수 있었고(마태복음 26:17-29 참조), 지난 날을 돌아보면서 어떻게 하나님의 전을 사모하는 고대 한 왕의 열심이 예수님을 통해 온전히 나타나게 되었는지를 떠올릴 수 있었습니다(시편 69:9; 요한복음 2:16-17). 하나님의 참된 성전(예수님 자신)에 비추어 성경을 다시 읽고 나서야 제자들은 이스라엘의 종교 의식과 메시아가 서로를 어떻게 조명해 주는지 이해할 수 있었습니다.

그리고 지금도 똑같은 이 성경의 여러 내용들을 앞뒤로 읽을 때 비로소 우리가 필요로 하거나 갈망했던 모든 것들을 예수님 안에서 볼 수 있습니다.

READING BACKWARDS

Reading the last chapter of a mystery novel first may sound like a bad idea to those who love the suspense of a good story. But some people enjoy reading a book more if they know how it ends.

In Reading Backwards, author Richard Hays shows how important the practice is for our understanding of the Bible. By illustrating how the unfolding words and events of Scripture anticipate, echo, and throw light on one another, Professor Hays gives us reason to read our Bibles forward and backward.

Hays reminds readers that it was only after Jesus’ resurrection that His disciples understood His claim to rebuild a destroyed temple in three days. The apostle John tells us, “The temple he had spoken of was his body” (JOHN 2:21). Only then could they understand a meaning of their Passover celebration never before understood (SEE MATTHEW 26:17–29). Only in retrospect could they reflect on how Jesus gave fullness of meaning to an ancient king’s deep feelings for the house of God (PSALM 69:9; JOHN 2:16–17). Only by rereading their Scriptures in light of the true temple of God (Jesus Himself) could the disciples grasp how the ritual of Israel’s religion and Messiah would throw light on one another.

And now, only by reading these same Scriptures backward and forward, can we see in Jesus everything that any of us has ever needed or longed for.

소크라테스 클럽

1941년 영국 옥스퍼드 대학교에서 예수님을 믿는 사람들과 무신론자 또는 불가지론자들 사이의 논쟁을 장려하기 위해 소크라테스 클럽이 생겼습니다.

일반 대학에서 종교 논쟁을 하는 것이 드문 일은 아니지만, 놀라운 사실은 15년 동안 소크라테스 클럽을 이끌었던 사람이 바로 위대한 기독교 학자 C.S. 루이스였습니다. 기꺼이 자신의 생각을 시험해 보고자 했던 루이스는 그리스도를 믿는 신앙은 철저한 검증까지도 견뎌낼 수 있다고 믿었습니다. 그는 예수님을 믿는 신앙에 대한 확실하고 합리적인 증거가 있다는 것을 알고 있었습니다.

THE SOCRATIC CLUB

In 1941, the Socratic Club was established at England’s Oxford University. It was formed to encourage debate between believers in Jesus and atheists or agnostics.

Religious debate at a secular university isn’t unusual, but what is surprising is who chaired the Socratic Club for fifteen years—the great Christian scholar C. S. Lewis. Willing to have his thinking tested, Lewis believed that faith in Christ could stand up to great scrutiny. He knew there was credible, rational evidence for believing in Jesus.

In a sense, Lewis was practicing Peter’s advice to believers scattered by persecution when he reminded them, “In your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect” (1 PETER 3:15). Peter makes two key points: we have good reasons for our hope in Christ and we’re to present our reasoning with “gentleness and respect.”

Trusting Christ isn’t religious escapism or wishful thinking. Our faith is grounded in the facts of history, including the resurrection of Jesus and the evidence of the creation bearing witness to its Creator. As we rest in God’s wisdom and the strength of the Spirit, may we be ready to share the reasons we have for trusting our great God.

우리를 잘 아시는 하나님

어머니는 멀리서도 내게 생긴 문제를 알아차리시는 것 같습니다. 한번은 학교에서 어려웠던 하루를 보낸 후 힘든 모습을 감추며 아무도 눈치채지 못하기를 바랐는데, 어머니는 나를 보고 대뜸 “무슨 일이 있었어?” 라고 물으며 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “아무것도 아니라고 말하기 전에 난 네 엄마라는 걸 기억해라. 내가 너를 낳았고, 너보다 너를 더 잘 알아.” 어머니는 나를 누구보다 잘 알기 때문에 내가 어머니를 가장 필요로 하는 순간에 내 곁에 있을 수 있다는 사실을 항상 나에게 일깨워 주셨습니다.

예수님을 믿는 사람들은 우리를 자세히 아시는 하나님의 보살핌을 받습니다. 시편 기자 다윗은 그분의 자녀들의 삶을 세심하게 지켜보시는 하나님을 이렇게 찬양했습니다. “여호와여 주께서 나를 살펴보셨으므로 나를 아시나이다 주께서 내가 앉고 일어섬을 아시고 멀리서도 나의 생각을 밝히 아시오며”(시편 139:1-2). 하나님은 우리가 누구인지를, 곧 우리의 모든 생각과 갈망과 행동을 아시기 때문에 우리가 그분의 풍성한 사랑과 보살핌의 테두리를 벗어나 갈 수 있는 곳은 아무데도 없습니다(7-12절). 다윗이 쓴 것처럼, “내가... 바다 끝에 가서 거주할지라도 거기서도 주의 손이 나를 인도하실”(9- 10절) 것입니다. 우리가 어느 곳에 살고 있든 기도로 하나님께 부르짖으면 우리에게 필요한 사랑과 지혜로 인도해 주실 거라는 사실을 알고 위안을 얻을 수 있습니다.

GOD KNOWS YOU

It seems my mother can sense trouble from a mile away. Once, after a rough day at school, I tried to mask my frustration hoping that no one would notice. “What’s the matter?” she asked. Then she added, “Before you tell me it’s nothing, remember I’m your mother. I gave birth to you, and I know you better than you know yourself.” My mom has consistently reminded me that her deep awareness of who I am helps her be there for me in the moments I need her most.

As believers in Jesus, we’re cared for by a God who knows us intimately. The psalmist David praised Him for His attentiveness to the lives of His children saying, “You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar” (PSALM 139:1–2). Because God knows who we are—our every thought, desire, and action—there’s nowhere we can go where we’re outside the bounds of His abundant love and care (VV. 7–12). As David wrote, “If I settle on the far side of the sea even there your hand will guide me” (VV. 9–10). We can find comfort knowing that no matter where we are in life, when we call out to God in prayer, He’ll offer us the love, wisdom, and guidance we need.

생각하며 기도하기

“당신을 생각하며 기도하겠습니다.” 이런 말을 들을 때 우리는 그 사람이 정말 그렇게 할까 하는 의심이 들기도 합니다. 하지만 에드나 데이비스가 그런 말을 할 때면 절대 의심하지 않아도 되었습니다. 신호등이 하나뿐인 그 작은 마을의 모든 사람들은 페이지마다 사람들의 이름이 계속 줄을 채우고 있는 “에드나 여사의” 노란 종이 수첩에 대해 잘 알고 있었습니다. 매일 아침 일찍, 이 할머니는 수첩에 적힌 사람들을 위해 하나님께 큰 소리로 기도했습니다. 그 목록에 있는 사람들이 다 그들이 원했던 응답을 받지는 못했지만, 몇 사람은 그 할머니 장례식에서 그들의 삶 속에 하나님의 손길과도 같은 무엇인가가 일어났다고 간증하면서, 그것이 에드나 여사의 진심 어린 기도 덕분이라고 믿었습니다.

하나님은 베드로가 감옥에 갇혔던 경험을 통해서도 기도의 힘을 보여주셨습니다. 베드로 사도가 헤롯의 사람들에게 잡혀서 감옥에 갇혀 “군사 넷 씩인 네 패에 맡겨”(사도행전 12:4)졌을 때 그의 앞날은 캄캄해 보였습니다. 그러나 “교회는 그를 위하여 간절히 하나님께 기도했습니다”(5절). 교인들은 베드로를 생각하며 기도한 것입니다. 그러자 하나님께서 정말 기적적인 일을 행하셨습니다! 감옥에 있는 베드로에게 천사가 나타나 쇠사슬을 풀어주고 감옥문을 지나 안전한 곳으로 그를 인도해 준 것입니다(7-10절).

실제로 그렇게 하지 않으면서도 그냥 “생각하고 기도하겠다”고 말하는 사람들이 있을 수 있습니다. 하지만 하나님 아버지는 우리의 생각을 아시고, 우리의 기도를 들으시며, 그분의 완벽한 뜻에 따라 우리를 위해 행하십니다. 우리가 위대하고 능력있는 하나님을 섬긴다면, 다른 사람들이 나를 위해 기도하고, 내가 다른 이들을 위해 기도하는 일은 결코 작은 일이 아닙니다.

THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS

“You’ll be in my thoughts and prayers.” If you hear those words, you might wonder if the person really means it. But you never had to wonder when Edna Davis said them. Everyone in the small, one stoplight town knew of “Ms. Edna’s” yellow legal pad—page after page, lined with name after name. Early each morning the aging woman prayed out loud to God. Not everyone on her list received the answer to prayer they wanted, but several testified at her funeral that something God-sized had happened in their life, and they credited it to the earnest prayers of Ms. Edna.

God demonstrated the power of prayer in Peter’s prison experience. After the apostle was seized by Herod’s men, thrown into prison, and then “guarded by four squads of four soldiers each” (ACTS 12:4), his prospects looked bleak. But “the church was earnestly praying to God for him” (V. 5). They had Peter in their thoughts and prayers. What God did is simply miraculous! An angel appeared to Peter in prison, released him from his chains, and led him to safety beyond the prison gates (VV. 7–10).

It’s possible some may use “thoughts and prayers” without really meaning it. But our Father knows our thoughts, listens to our prayers, and acts on our behalf according to His perfect will. To be prayed for and to pray for others is no small thing when we serve the great and powerful God.

빗나가지 말고 곧바로 전진!

“안식”이라는 제목의 시에서 시인은 “여가”를 “일”과 분리하려는 우리의 성향에 대해, “참다운 안식은 참다운 일과 함께 하는 것이 아닌가?” 라고 물으며 점잖게 이의를 제기합니다. 시인은 진정한 여가를 보내고 싶다면 삶에서 해야 할 여러가지 일들을 피하려고 하지 말라고 말합니다. “무조건 최선을 다하면서 유용하게 사용하고 쓸데없이 시간을 보내지 말라/그렇게 하지 않으면 안식이라 할 수 없다/아름다움은 어디에서 볼 수 있을까?/당신 가까이 있을까? 온 사방에 있을까?/오직 할 일을 다하는 곳에서만/아름다운 광경이 보일 것이다.”

ONWARDS! UNSWERVING

In the poem “Rest,” the poet gently challenges our tendency to separate “leisure” time from “work,” asking, “Is not true leisure / One with true toil?” If you want to experience true leisure, instead of trying to avoid life’s duties, the author urges, “Still do thy best; Use it, not waste it,— / Else ’tis not rest. / Wouldst behold beauty / Near thee? all round? / Only hath duty / Such a sight found.”

The poet concludes that true rest and joy are both found through love and service—an idea that brings to mind Paul’s encouragement to the Thessalonians. After describing his calling to encourage believers “to live lives worthy of God” (1 THESSALONIANS 2:12), the apostle gives more specifics.

And the picture he paints of such a life is one of quiet integrity, love, and service. Paul prays that God would “make [their] love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else” (3:12). And he urges believers in Jesus to “make it your ambition to lead a quiet life,” to “mind your own business and work with your hands” (4:11). It’s that kind of life, quietly loving and serving in whatever ways God has enabled us, that reveals to others the beauty of a life of faith (V. 12).

Or, as the writer puts it, true joy is “loving and serving / The highest and best; / ’Tis onwards! Unswerving— / And that is true rest.”

경계를 늦추지 마십시오

한 남자가 친구 몇 명과 함께 눈사태 경고판이 붙어 있는 스키장 문을 통과해 스노보드를 타기 시작했습니다. 두 번째 타고 내려올 때 누군가가 “눈사태다!”라고 소리쳤습니다. 그러나 그 남자는 피하지 못하고 쏟아지는 눈에 파묻혀 죽고 말았습니다. 어떤 사람들은 그가 초보여서 실수한 것이라고 비난했지만 실제로 그렇지 않았습니다. 그는 “눈사태에 대해 인증받은 산간 오지 가이드”였습니다. 한 연구원은 눈사태 대비 훈련을 가장 많이 받은 스키어와 스노보더가 잘못된 추리에 따를 가능성이 더 크다고 말했습니다. “[그 스노보더는] 경계심을 풀고 방심했기 때문에 죽은 것입니다.”

KEEP YOUR GUARD UP

A man and several friends went through a ski resort gate posted with avalanche warning signs and started snowboarding. On the second trip down, someone shouted, “Avalanche!” But the man couldn’t escape and perished in the cascading snow. Some criticized him, calling him a novice. But he wasn’t; he was an “avalanche-certified backcountry guide.” One researcher said that skiers and snowboarders with the most avalanche training are more likely to give in to faulty reasoning. “[The snowboarder] died because he was lulled into letting his guard down.”

As Israel prepared to go into the promised land, God wanted His people to keep their guard up—to be careful and alert. So He commanded them to obey all His “decrees and laws” (DEUTERONOMY 4:1–2) and remember His past judgment on those who disobeyed (VV. 3–4). They needed to “be careful” to examine themselves and keep watch over their inner lives (V. 9). This would help them keep their guard up against spiritual dangers from without and spiritual apathy from within.

It’s easy for us to let our guard down and fall into apathy and self-deception. But God can give us strength to avoid falling in life and forgiveness by His grace when we do. By following Him and resting in His wisdom and provision, we can keep our guard up and make good decisions!

목소리를 사용한 봉사

여덟 살 때부터 말을 더듬었던 리사는 사람들과 대화해야 하는 사회생활이 두려웠습니다. 그러나 나중에 언어치료를 받고 어려움을 극복한 리사는 자신의 목소리를 사용해 다른 사람들을 돕기로 결심하고 정신적 고통에 시달리는 사람들을 위해 전화 상담 자원봉사에 나섰습니다.

모세는 이스라엘 백성들을 포로생활에서 벗어나게 하는데 있어 자신의 말에 대한 걱정에 사로잡혔습니다. 하나님은 모세에게 바로에게 이야기하라고 하셨지만 모세는 자신이 말주변이 없다며 버텼습니다(출애굽기 4:10). 그러나 하나님은 그에게 “누가 사람의 입을 지었느냐”고 물으시며, “내가 네 입과 함께 있어서 할 말을 가르치리라”고 하시며 모세를 안심시키셨습니다(11-12절).

하나님의 이런 반응은 우리가 여러 가지로 부족해도 우리를 통해 하나님이 강력하게 역사하실 수 있다는 사실을 일깨워줍니다. 하지만 우리가 이것을 마음으로는 알고 있어도 그렇게 살아가기는 어려울 수 있습니다. 모세도 계속 씨름하며 하나님께 다른 사람을 보내 달라고 간청했습니다(13절). 그러자 하나님은 모세의 형 아론이 모세와 동행하도록 허락하셨습니다(14절).

우리 각자는 다른 사람을 도울 수 있는 목소리를 갖고 있습니다. 우리는 두려울 수도 있고, 자신이 없다고 느낄 수도 있습니다. 그리고 적절한 말을 찾지 못할 거라고 느낄 수도 있습니다.

그러나 우리의 그런 감정을 잘 알고 계시는 하나님은 우리가 다른 사람들을 섬기고 하나님의 일을 완수하는데 필요한 말과 모든 것을 공급해 주십니다.

USING YOUR VOICE

Since age eight, Lisa had struggled with a stammer and became afraid of social situations that required her to talk with people. But later in life, after speech therapy helped her overcome her challenge, Lisa decided to use her voice to help others. She began volunteering as a counselor for an emotional distress telephone hotline.

Moses had to face his concerns about speaking to help lead the Israelites out of captivity. God asked him to communicate with Pharaoh, but Moses protested because he didn’t feel confident in his speaking ability (EXODUS 4:10). God challenged him, “Who gave human beings their mouths?” Then He reassured Moses saying, “I will help you speak and will teach you what to say” (VV. 11–12).

God’s response reminds us that He can work powerfully through us even in our limitations. But even when we know this in our hearts, it can be hard to live it out. Moses continued to struggle and begged God to send someone else (V. 13). So God allowed Moses’ brother Aaron to accompany him (V. 14).

Each of us has a voice that can help others. We may be afraid. We may not feel capable. We may feel we don’t have the right words.

God knows how we feel. He can provide the words and all we need to serve others and accomplish His work.

하나님의 사랑

1917년, 재정난에 시달리던 캘리포니아 주의 사업가 프레드릭 리먼은 “그 크신 하나님의 사랑”이라는 찬송가 가사를 썼습니다. 영감을 받았던 그는 첫 두 절을 빠르게 써 내려갔지만 삼 절에서 막혀 버렸습니다. 그때 몇 년 전 교도소 벽에서 발견된 시가 떠올랐습니다. 한 죄수가 하나님의 사랑에 대한 사무침을 표현하며 돌에 새겨 놓은 시였습니다. 리먼은 자신의 찬송가와 같은 운율을 가진 이 시를 삼 절에 사용했습니다.

리먼과 교도소의 시인처럼 우리도 힘든 시련을 마주할 때가 있습니다. 절망스러울 때에는 우리도 시편 기자 다윗의 말처럼 “[하나님의] 날개 그늘 아래로 피하는”(시편 57:1, 새번역) 것이 좋습니다. 우리의 문제들을 가져와
“하나님께 부르짖고”(2절), 우리가 지금 겪고 있는 시련과 “사자들 가운데에서” (4절) 느끼는 두려움을 주님께 말해도 괜찮습니다. 우리는 곧 하나님이 지난날 베풀어 주셨던 것을 기억하고, 다윗과 같이 우리도 “내가 노래하고 내가 찬송하리이다... 내가 새벽을 깨우리로다”(7-8절)라고 고백하게 될 것입니다.

이 찬송가는 “그 크신 하나님의 사랑, 저 높고 높은 별을 넘어”라고 선포합니다. 진실로 우리가 가장 어려운 바로 그 순간, 우리는 하나님의 사랑이 실로 얼마나 큰지, 정말 “하늘에 미치는”(10절) 그 사랑을 깨닫게 됩니다.

THE LOVE OF GOD

In 1917, Frederick Lehman, a California businessman beset by financial setbacks, wrote the lyrics to the hymn, “The Love of God.” His inspiration led him quickly to pen the first two stanzas, but he got stuck on the third. He recalled a poem that had been discovered years earlier, written on the walls of a prison. A prisoner had scratched it there into the stone, expressing a deep awareness of God’s love. The poem happened to be in the same meter as Lehman’s hymn. He made it his third stanza.

There are times when we face difficult setbacks as did Lehman and the poet in the prison cell. In times of despair, we do well to echo the psalmist David’s words and “take refuge in the shadow of [God’s] wings” (PSALM 57:1). It’s okay to “cry out to God” with our troubles (V. 2), to speak to Him of our current ordeal and the fears we have when “in the midst of lions” (V. 4). We’re soon reminded of the reality of God’s provision in times past, and join David who says, “I will sing and make music. . . . I will awaken the dawn” (VV. 7–8).

“The love of God is greater far,” this hymn proclaims, adding “it goes beyond the highest star.” It’s precisely in our time of greatest need when we’re to embrace how great God’s love really is—indeed “reaching to the heavens” (V. 10).
