마음의 중심

모스크바로 가르치러 갔을 때, 지하철을 타고 점심을 먹으러 가기로 했습니다. 객차 안에 서 있는데, 오전에 수업을 즐겁게 마쳤고 날씨도 좋아서 나도 모르게 휘파람을 불기 시작했습니다. 그러자 승객들이 나를 미친 사람처럼 빤히 쳐다보았습니다. 학교로 돌아와서 사무실 직원에게 사람들이 너무 침체되어 있고 의기소침해서 휘파람 부는 나를 그렇게 쳐다본 게 아닌가 생각한다고 말했습니다. 그러자 그 직원은 정중하게 말했습니다. “네, 여기 사람들의 삶이 힘든 것은 사실이지만, 그게 쳐다본 이유는 아닐 거예요. 이곳에서는 공공장소에서 휘파람을 부는 것이 무례하게 여겨지기 때문입니다.”

우리는 바로 그 상황과는 전혀 무관할 지도 모르는 외부 요인들에 근거하여 사람들에 대해 추정하곤 합니다. 이 사실은 장차 이스라엘의 왕으로 다윗이 선택된 이야기를 생각해보면 도움이 됩니다. 사무엘 선지자는 이새의 맏아들을 보고 속으로 생각했습니다. “여호와의 기름 부으실 자가 과연 주님 앞에 있도다” (사무엘상 16:6). 그러나 하나님은 사무엘에게 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “그의 용모와 키를 보지 말라 내가 이미 그를 버렸노라 내가 보는 것은 사람과 같지 아니하니 사람은 외모를 보거니와 나 여호와는 중심을 보느니라”(7절).

사람의 외모를 보고 판단하면 잘못된 결론으로 이어질 수 있습니다. 판단은 하나님께 맡겨드리는 것이 좋습니다. 그분은 마음의 중심을 보시기 때문입니다.

THE HEART OF THE MATTER

On a teaching trip to Moscow, I decided to take the subway to get lunch. Standing in the subway car, I started whistling simply because I felt good after an enjoyable morning teaching and the day was pleasant. The passengers stared at me like I was insane. When I got back to the school, I told one of the office workers that the people were so discouraged and downhearted they stared when I whistled. She politely informed me, “Yes, their lives are very hard, but that isn’t why they stared. They stared because it’s rude to whistle in public here.”

When we make assumptions, we base them on external factors that may not have any bearing on the moment. It’s helpful to recall the story of David’s selection as future king of Israel. As the prophet Samuel considered Jesse’s eldest son, he thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord” (1 SAMUEL 16:6). But God told Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (V. 7).

Basing judgments on appearances will lead to wrong conclusions. We do well to let God do the judging. He sees the heart of the matter.

내가 즐겨 보는 착시 그림책 중 하나는 그림들이 내 눈을 감쪽같이 속여서 언제나 나를 놀라게 합니다. 예를 들어, 길이가 같은 두 선이 서로 다른 길이로 보인다거나, 네 개의 계단이 끊임없이 이어지는 고리처럼 보이는 그 유명한 “불가능한 계단” 같은 그림이 그렇습니다. 이런 그림들을 보다 보면, 우리가 사물을 항상 있는 그대로 보지 못한다는 사실을 깨닫게 되어 조금은 당혹 스럽기도 합니다.

그러나 우리를 속이는 것은 시각만이 아닙니다. 우리는 세상의 기만적인 주장들에 매일같이 노출되면서, 하나님의 자녀라는 우리의 정체성에 대해서도 간혹 환상에 빠지곤 합니다. 작가 헨리 나우웬은 이런 글을 썼습니다. “예수님은 성공, 인기, 권력을 바탕으로 한 정체성은 거짓된 정체성, 곧 환상임을 선포하시기 위해 오셨다!”

하나님의 아낌없는 사랑 덕분에 가능해진 우리의 참된 정체성은, 우리가 예수님을 구주로 영접할 때 비로소 “하나님의 자녀”가 된다는 사실입니다 (요한1서 3:1). 요한 사도가 깨달았듯이, 때때로 “우리 마음이 우리를 책망할 때”(20절)가 있어 하나님의 사랑을 의심하거나, 우리가 정말로 하나님께 속한 존재인지 묻기 시작합니다. 그러나 “하나님은 우리 마음보다 크시고 모든 것을 아십니다”(20절). 해로운 환상에 속지 말고, 우리가 하나님의 사랑 받는 자녀라는 진리를 믿으십시오.

CHILDREN OF GOD

One of my favorite books of optical illusions always astounds me as the pictures deceive my eyes—like one with two lines of the same length appearing to be different sizes, or the famous “impossible staircase” in which four flights of stairs seem to link in a continuous loop. It can also be a little disconcerting to realize we don’t always see things as they truly are.

But it’s not only our eyes that deceive us. We can sometimes believe illusions about our identity as God’s children when we’re bombarded daily with the world’s deceptive claims. Author Henri Nouwen wrote, “Jesus came to announce to us that an identity based on success, popularity and power is a false identity—an illusion!”

Our true identity, possible because of God’s lavish love, is that when we receive Jesus as our Savior we become “children of God” (1 JOHN 3:1). As the apostle John recognized, sometimes “our hearts condemn us” (V. 20), and we begin to doubt God’s love or even question if we truly belong to Him. However, “God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything” (V. 20). Instead of being deceived by damaging illusions, we can believe the truth that we are God’s beloved children.

Whatever illusions you may encounter about your identity today, hold fast to the truth that you’re God’s beloved child.

하나님의 구원 계획

한 아버지가 크루즈선을 타고 여행하던 중, 4층 갑판에서 자신의 다섯 살 난 딸이 바다로 떨어졌다는 것을 깨닫고는 딸을 구하기 위해 망설임 없이 약 40피트(12m) 아래의 바다로 몸을 던졌습니다. 그는 구조팀이 두 사람을 안전하게 배로 데려올 때까지 10분이 넘는 시간 동안 딸을 꼭 붙잡은 채 물 위에서 버텼습니다. 이 아버지는 딸이 위험에 처했다는 말을 듣자마자 딸을 구하기 위해 자신의 모든 것을 걸었던 것입니다.

GOD’S RESCUE PLAN

When a father learned his five-year-old daughter had fallen overboard from the fourth deck of the cruise ship they were on, he plunged into the ocean forty feet below to rescue her. He held on to his daughter while treading water for more than ten minutes before the ship’s rescue team brought them safely back on board. As soon as the father heard his daughter was in trouble, he risked everything to save her.

All throughout the Bible, we read how our heavenly Father’s love compelled Him to give His all to rescue us from drowning in our sin. God first declared His divine rescue plan in the garden of Eden. After Adam and Eve were tempted by the serpent and sinned, God cursed the serpent and said, “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel” (GENESIS 3:15). This verse refers to the spiritual battle between Satan and God’s children and how at His appointed time God would send His Son, Jesus, to redeem the world through His Son’s sacrificial death and resurrection.

God has been ready to save us long before we realized we needed His help. Whenever we feel like we’re sinking in an ocean of sin, we can be encouraged that Jesus is our divine lifeline. We can cry out to Him. He will rescue and restore us.

하나님의 나라를 구하라

어린 손자가 우리 새 집에서 하룻밤을 보내게 되었습니다. 그 아이에게는 익숙하지 않은 침대였습니다. 포근한 이불과 그 위로 쳐 준 공룡 텐트 안에서 함께 책을 읽을 때는 신이 나서 즐겁게 웃었지만, 막상 잠잘 시간이 되자 손자가 눈을 크게 뜨고 걱정했습니다. “제가 밤에 할머니가 필요하면 어떻게 찾아요?” 그때 한 가지 아이디어가 떠올라서 옷장에 있던 선물용 리본을 꺼냈습니다. 우리는 그 아이의 침대에서부터 방바닥을 지나 복도를 따라 내 방까지 쭉 이어지도록 리본을 풀어서 연결했습니다. “걱정하지 말아라.” 내가 말했습니다. “밤에 내가 필요하면 이 줄을 따라오면 나를 찾을 수 있을 거야!” 그 말을 듣자 손자의 얼굴이 환하게 밝아졌습니다.

마태복음 6장에서 예수님께서는 우리가 무엇을 먹고 무엇을 마실지, 또 몸을 위하여 무엇을 입을지 염려하는 우리의 고충에 대해 단호하게 말씀하십니다 (25절). “염려”라는 헬라어 단어의 어원은 마음이 두 방향, 즉 믿음의 방향과 자기 자신을 의지하는 방향으로 나누어지는 것을 의미합니다. 33절에서 예수님은 염려에 대한 해결책을 주십니다. “너희는 먼저 하나님의 나라와 그의 의를 구하라 그리하면 이 모든 것을 너희에게 더하시리라.” 이것은 그분의 마음으로 곧장 이어지는 오직 하나의 방향을 택하고 따르라는 도전입니다.

각종 염려로 힘들어할 때, 우리는 하나님께서 모든 필요를 채워주실 것을 믿고, 하나님의 나라와 하나님의 길, 하나님의 임재로 우리를 안내하는 그 “줄” 을 따라갈 수 있습니다.

SEEKING GOD’S KINGDOM

My young grandson was spending the night in our new home, in a bed unfamiliar to him. He giggled with excitement as we read books under the dinosaur tent I’d pitched atop his cozy comforter, but when it was time to sleep, his eyes widened with worry. “How will I find you if I need you?” he asked. An idea emerged, and I grabbed a roll of ribbon from the gift wrap stash in the closet. Together we unspooled it from his bed, onto the floor, down the hall, and into my bedroom. “Don’t worry,” I said. “If you need me in the night, follow the string and you’ll find me!” He beamed in response.

In Matthew 6, Jesus speaks straight to our struggle with worry about what we’ll eat and drink, about our body and what we’ll wear (V. 25). The Greek root of the word translated “worry” means to be torn in two directions—the direction of faith versus selfreliance. In verse 33, Jesus offers the solution to worry: “Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” It’s a challenge to us to choose and follow the one direction that leads straight to His heart.

When we struggle with worries, we can follow the “string” that directs us to God’s kingdom, His ways, and His presence, knowing that He will provide all we need.

하나님을 바라보라

엘리스는 거의 공황상태에 빠졌습니다. 책의 편집본 마감일이 다음날 이었는데, 프린터가 사진들을 인식하지 못한 것입니다. 이것을 해결하려면 며칠이 걸릴 수도 있었습니다.

"걱정하지마." 남편 샘이 말했습니다. “하나님께 도와달라고 기도하자. 그러고 밤새 작업하면 돼. 이 소프트웨어가 사진들을 빨리 수정하는 데 도움이 될 거야.”

남편과 함께 기도하고 나니까 엘리스의 마음이 평안해지기 시작했습니다. ‘계속 하나님만 바라보자.’ 스스로에게 말했습니다. 하나님께서 주신 마음의 평안과 남편의 실질적인 조언 덕분에 엘리스는 다시 작업에 착수했고, 제시간에 작업을 마칠 수 있었습니다.

이 과정에서 엘리스는 예루살렘 성벽 재건이라는 엄청난 과업을 수행하던 이스라엘 백성들을 떠올렸습니다(느헤미야 4장). 일 자체도 벅찼지만, 적들은 그들을 조롱하고 공사를 방해하려고 음모를 꾸몄습니다. 그러나 느헤미야는 이스라엘 백성들에게 계속해서 하나님을 바라보라고 독려했습니다. “우리 힘 으로는 이 성벽을 건축하지 못하리라”고 유다 백성들이 말했으나 느헤미야는 “지극히 크시고 두려우신 주를 기억하라”(10, 14절)고 말했습니다. 그리고 사람 들을 배치하여 성벽을 쌓으며 침략자들을 경계하도록 준비했고 지도자들이 그들 뒤에서 지원하도록 했습니다(16절). 또한 백성들에게 “우리 하나님이 우리를 위하여 싸우시리라”(20절)고 격려했습니다.

우리가 감당하기 어려운 도전에 직면할 때마다, 도움과 힘을 주시는 하나님을 바라봅시다. 우리는 실질적인 해결책을 찾을 수 있는 지혜를 구하며 기도하고, 필요한 조치를 취하며, 어떠한 결과가 나오든 하나님을 의지할 수 있습니다.

LOOK TO GOD

Elise felt the panic rising. The book layout was due the next day, but the printer had rejected the photos. It could take days to sort it out.

“Don’t worry,” said her husband, Sam. “Let’s ask God for help. Then we’ll work through the night. This software might help us fix the photos quickly.”

As they prayed, Elise started to feel more assured. Just keep looking to God, she told herself. With this God-given peace of mind and Sam’s practical tip, she went to work—and completed the task in time.

As she did so, Elise recalled the Israelites’ mammoth task of rebuilding their city wall (NEHEMIAH 4). As if it wasn’t difficult enough, enemies mocked them and conspired to sabotage their work. But Nehemiah encouraged them to keep looking to God. “By ourselves we will not be able to rebuild the wall,” Judah said, but Nehemiah replied, “Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome” (VV. 10, 14 ESV). Then he deployed the men to work on the wall and guard against attackers, with leaders behind them (V. 16). He also encouraged them, saying, “Our God will fight for us” (V. 20).

Whenever we face overwhelming challenges, let’s keep looking to God for help and strength. We can pray for wisdom to find practical solutions, take the necessary steps, and trust in God for the outcome—whatever it might be.

하나님과 영원히

영국 남부 해안 지역에서 케이트라는 같은 이름을 가진 두 여성이 “관 클럽” 을 운영하고 있습니다. 그들은 사람들이 관을 고르고 장식하며 언젠가 맞이할 죽음을 준비하는 장소를 마련했습니다. 열세 살 때 아버지를 잃은 케이트는 그 때를 회상하며 이렇게 말했습니다. “정말 끔찍했어요. 아무도 죽음에 대해 이야기하고 싶어 하지 않았거든요.” 이 클럽은 언젠가 우리 모두가 겪게 될 경험을 자연스러운 일상으로 받아들이게 하려는 한가지 시도입니다.

우리가 자신의 관을 장식하는 일에 관심이 있든 없든, 우리는 모두 하나님께 소망을 두고 예수님께서 주시는 구원을 믿음으로써 죽음을 준비할 수 있습니다. 죽은 후에도 삶이 계속된다는 사실을 아는 것은 우리에게 진정한 위로와 소망, 그리고 평안을 줍니다. 우리는 마르다처럼 예수님이 구원자이신 메시아이심을 믿을 수 있습니다.

ETERNITY WITH GOD

On England’s south coast, two women who are both named Kate run the Coffin Club. They created this place for people to prepare for their eventual death through selecting and decorating their coffins. Kate’s dad died when she was thirteen, and she said, “It was horrendous. No one wanted to talk about death.” Their club is a way to normalize an experience we will all go through one day.

Death may be “normal” because it will happen to everyone. But those who love and serve Jesus can prepare for their death without fear, as we see in Jesus’ conversation with His beloved friend Martha after her brother had died. Jesus promised her that Lazarus would “rise again” (JOHN 11:23). He told her that He is “the resurrection and the life” and that “the one who believes in [Him] will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in [Him] will never die” (VV. 25-26). Martha responded by making one of the few professions in the New Testament that Jesus was the Messiah, the Son of God (V. 27). She believed.

We may or may not be keen to decorate our own coffins, but we all can prepare for death by placing our hope in God, trusting in the salvation Jesus offers. Knowing that we will continue to live after we die gives us true comfort, hope, and peace. We can join Martha in believing that Jesus is the Messiah, the one who saves.

오구니 시로는 언젠가 치매 노인들을 위한 공동생활시설을 방문한 적이 있습니다. 이 치매노인들이 활기찬 일상에서 멀어진 모습에 마음 아파하다가 그는 기억을 잃은 치매 노인들에게 더 나은 방법이 있을 것이라는 생각이 들었습니다. 오구니가 천재성을 발휘하여 생각해낸 창의적인 아이디어는 ‘주문을 제대로 받지 못하는 식당’입니다. 이곳은 실제 운영되는 식당이지만 한 가지 특별한 점은 바로 모든 홀 직원이 기억력 감퇴를 겪고 있다는 사실입니다. 네, 맞습니다. 기억력이 좋아야 하는 중요한 역할을 맡은 종업원들이 바로 그 부분에 어려움을 겪는 식당입니다. 그러니까 통상의 사업적 관점에서 보면 이 식당의 실적은 좋지 않았습니다. 손님의 37 퍼센트가 자신이 주문한 음식을 받지 못했기 때문입니다. 하지만 이 식당에 오는 손님들 또한 이런 상황을 예상하고 오기 때문에 그 정도의 불편은 이해합니다. 이러한 “예상치 못한 일”이 벌어지면 사과와 함께 유쾌한 웃음이 이어지고, 손님들은 기쁜 마음으로 식당을 떠납니다.

바울 사도는 에베소 교인들에게 보낸 서신에서 “오래 참(으라)”(에베소서 4:2)고 권면합니다. 우리 모두 알다시피 이는 말처럼 쉽지 않습니다. 왜냐하면 서로 ‘용납하는 것’을 포함하기 때문인데, 이 단어는 “짊어지다”, “견디다”, “지지하다”라는 모든 의미를 담고 있습니다. 다시 말해, 노력이 필요하다는 뜻입니다. 하지만 그 노력의 근원이 우리 자신의 힘이 아니라 하나님의 사랑에서 비롯된다면, 그 짐은 가벼워지고, 깜짝 놀랄 일과 사과, 심지어 웃음이 가득한 즐거운 삶으로 이어집니다. 그것은 당신이 요구한 것을 얻지 못할 수도 있지만, 우리 모두가 진정으로 원하는 것, 즉 “부르심을 받은 일에 합당하게 행하는 삶”(1절)을 얻게 되는 삶의 방식입니다.

BE PATIENT

Shiro Oguni once visited a group home for adults with dementia. Heartbroken at their isolation from the hum of society, he felt there ought to be a better way. Oguni’s creative genius led to what is known as the Restaurant of Mistaken Orders, an actual restaurant with this added twist—all the wait staff struggle with memory loss. Yes, you read that correctly. Every person in that pivotal role, which requires a strong memory, suffers in that exact area. Now, from the usual business perspective, the results were poor—thirty-seven percent of the time, the guests did not receive what they ordered. But those guests also expect such problems, so they understand. After these “surprises,” apologies and hearty laughter ensue, and customers leave happy.

Paul writes, “Be patient” (EPHESIANS 4:2)—and we all know that’s so much easier said than done because it involves bearing with each other, a word that can mean everything from “carrying” to “enduring” to “supporting.” In other words, effort is involved. Yet if the effort has its source in God’s love as opposed to our own strength, the burden is lightened and leads to a lighthearted way of living, full of surprises and apologies and even laughter. It’s a way of living where you may not get what you asked for, but you end up getting what we all really want—“a life worthy of the calling you have received” (V. 1).

도우시는 하나님

아홉 살 아들을 캠프에 차로 데려다 주던 어머니가 길을 잘못 들어 캘리포니아 시에라 네바다 산맥의 외딴 숲길에서 고립되고 말았습니다. 오지였던 탓에 GPS와 휴대전화가 작동을 멈췄고, 그들은 돌아갈 길을 찾을 수 없었습니다. 24시간 넘게 고립되어 차 안에서 하룻밤을 지내고, 절박해진 그들은 걷기 시작했습니다. 그들은 길을 따라 걸으며 다음과 같은 쪽지들을 남겼습니다. “도와주세요. 저와 아들이 신호가 터지지 않는 곳에 고립되어 911에 전화를 걸 수 없습니다.” 모자가 캠프에 제시간에 도착하지 않자 수색 구조대가 출동하여 차와 쪽지를 발견했고, 마침내 모자를 찾아냈습니다.

이스라엘 백성들은 자신들을 노예로 삼아 가혹하게 학대하는 애굽 사람들로부터 벗어나게 해달라고 하나님께 간절히 부르짖었습니다(출애굽기 1:11-12). 애굽 사람들은 그들을 무자비하게 부리며 “어려운 노동으로 그들의 생활을 괴롭게” 했습니다(13-14절). 이스라엘 백성들은 과연 이런 잔인한 학대 속에서 살아남을 수 있을지 의문이 들었을 것입니다. 그러나 하나님은 그들의 부르짖음을 들으셨고, 그들을 구원하기 위해 모세를 세우셨습니다(3:4-10). 결국 하나님은 모세를 통해 그들을 구조하고 애굽에서 이스라엘 백성들을 이끌어 내신 것입니다(출애굽기 14-15장 참조).

우리가 길을 잃고 방황하거나 부당한 대우를 받을 때에도, 하나님은 언제나 가까이 계시며 우리의 부르짖음에 귀 기울이십니다. 하나님의 때에, 하나님의 방법으로, 그분은 우리에게 필요한 도움을 보내주실 것입니다.

THE GOD WHO HELPS

While driving her nine-year-old son to camp, a mother got lost after taking a wrong turn and getting the car stuck on a rural forest road in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. Her GPS and phone quit working because of the remote area, so they were unable to retrace their way back. In desperation after being stranded for more than twenty-four hours and sleeping in their car overnight, they began to walk. They left a trail of notes along the way: “HELP. Me and my son are stranded with no service and can’t call 9-1-1.” Because they didn’t arrive at the camp on time, search-and-rescue teams went out looking. They discovered the car, the notes, and then quickly found them.

The Israelites desperately cried out to God for help because they were being severely mistreated by the Egyptians, who had enslaved them (EXODUS 1:11-12). Working them ruthlessly, “they made their lives bitter with harsh labor” (VV. 13-14). The Israelites must have wondered if they’d even survive the cruelty. But God heard their cries and raised up Moses to deliver them (3:4-10). Eventually God used him to rescue them and lead them out of Egypt (SEE EXODUS 14-15).

Whether we’re feeling lost or mistreated, God is always near and His ear is open to our cries. In His time and in His way, He’ll send the help we need.

위험한 착각

내가 수업을 하던 강의실 창문에서 ‘쿵’ 하는 큰 소리가 나서 학생들이 깜짝 놀랐습니다. 그러더니 또 한 번 ‘쿵’ 소리가 났습니다! 새 한 마리가 창문으로 날아와 부딪히고 튕겨 나갔다가, 또 다시 달려들어 충돌하여 난 소리였습니다. 나중에 자료를 찾아보니, 미국에서만 매년 10억 마리 이상의 새들이 창문에 부딪혀 죽는다고 합니다. 이런 충돌은 새들이 유리창에 비친 식물의 모습을 보고 그것을 먹이나 둥지 재료로 잘못 알고 달려들 때 발생하며, 새들은 간혹 유리창에 비춰진 자신의 모습을 물리쳐야 할 다른 새로 착각하기도 한답니다. 새들은 자신이 똑똑히 보고 있다고 확신하지만, 사실은 착각에 빠진 것입니다.

우리가 언제나 진실을 알아볼 수 있다고, 즉 우리 삶에 대해 명시적인 통찰력을 갖추고 있다고 생각하는 것은 위험합니다. 그러나 우리는 위험한 착각에 빠져 있어서, 우리의 가장 뛰어난 지혜조차, 그것에만 의지하면 결국 비극을 낳는다는 사실을 반복해서 보여줍니다. 잠언은 “어떤 길은 사람이 보기에 바르나 필경은 사망의 길이니라”(16:25)고 말씀합니다. 우리는 실체를 보고 있다고 믿지만, 너무나 자주 착각에 빠지곤 합니다. 우리의 아주 예리한 통찰력으로도 잘못 보는 수가 많습니다. 가장 명확한 우리의 시야조차 여전히 흐릿하고 불완전하여 종종 파멸을 초래합니다.

그렇기 때문에 우리에게는 하나님의 지혜가 필요합니다(20-21절). 진리를 밝히 드러내시고 참된 길로 인도하실 분은 하나님입니다. 우리를 위험한 착각에 빠지지 않고 온전함과 생명의 길로 인도해 주실 하나님이 필요합니다.

DEADLY CONFUSION

A loud thump came from a window in the classroom where I was teaching and startled the students. Then another thump! A bird had flown headlong into the glass and bounced off, only to make another run for yet another crash. Later, I read that more than a billion birds die each year from hitting windows in the United States alone. Collisions happen when they catch reflections of vegetation in the window and go after them, convinced they see food or nesting material. Sometimes they also catch their own reflection and think another bird needs to be fended off. They’re sure they see clearly, but they’re confused.

It’s dangerous to think that we always see what’s true—that we possess internal clarity about our lives. However, we suffer from a deadly confusion and repeatedly demonstrate that even our best wisdom—left to itself—eventually yields misery. “There is a way that appears to be right,” Proverbs says, “but in the end it leads to death” (16:25). We think we see what’s real, but too often we’re confused. Even our keenest insight is riddled with misperceptions. Even our clearest vision is still cloudy, imperfect, and often ruinous.

That’s why we need God’s wisdom (VV. 20-21). We need Him to illuminate the truth and guide us into what’s real. We need Him to lead us out of our deadly confusion and into wholeness and life.

기쁨으로 향하는 인내

우리 집 현관으로 올라가는 벽돌 계단 한구석에 진홍색 베고니아 한 송이가 강인하게 자리잡고 있습니다. 우리가 심지 않았는데, 화분 걸이에서 씨앗이 떨어져 자란 것 같았습니다. 하지만 우리 부부는 그것을 그대로 두었습니다. 해마다 피는 그 꽃은 아내와 나에게 인내는 아름다운 것이라는 사실을 즐겁게 일깨워 줍니다.

야고보는 특히 예수님을 믿는 신앙 때문에 반대에 부딪힌 이들에게 인내 에 관한 더욱 아름다운 격려를 전합니다. “여러 가지 시험을 당하거든 온전히 기쁘게 여기라 이는 너희 믿음의 시련이 인내를 만들어 내는 줄 너희가 앎이라” (야고보서 1:2-3).

‘온전히 기쁘게 여기라고요?’ 우리는 이 말씀 앞에서 주저할 수도 있지만, 야고보 사도는 하나님께서 모든 것 위에 계시며 심지어 어려운 상황 속에서도 선을 이루실 수 있다는 진리를 바라보고 있습니다. 야고보는 이렇게 결론을 맺습니다. “시험을 참는 자는 복이 있나니 이는... 주께서 자기를 사랑하는 자들에게 약속하신 생명의 면류관을 얻을 것이기 때문이라”(12절). 여기서 ‘복이 있다’는 단어는 예수님께서 산상수훈(마태복음 5:3-12)에서 사용하신 단어와 같은 것으로, 여러 의미 중에서도 ‘행복하다’는 뜻을 담고 있습니다.

영적 싸움이나 인생의 고된 시련 등 우리가 무엇을 마주하든지, 하나님은 그분의 사랑 안에서 우리를 붙들어 주실 것이며, 언젠가 그분의 기쁨이라는 아름다움으로 우리에게 자비로운 상을 주실 것입니다.

PERSEVERING INTO JOY

Nestled in a corner of the brick steps leading up to our front door is a hardy little scarlet begonia. We didn’t plant it—it must have grown there from a seed that fell out of a hang- oJAMES 1:2-12 SATURDAY | SEPTEMBER 12 Blessed is the one who perseveres. [ JAMES 1:12 ] ing basket. But we’ve let it remain. Year after year it’s a cheerful reminder to my wife and me that perseverance is a beautiful thing.

James offers even more beautiful encouragement to persevere, especially to those facing opposition for their faith in Jesus: “Consider it pure joy . . . whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance” (JAMES 1:2-3).

Pure joy? We balk at those words, but the apostle is looking forward to the truth that God is over everything and is able to bring good out of even difficult circumstances. James completes the thought: “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because . . . that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him” (V. 12). The word blessed is the same word Jesus uses in the Beatitudes (MATTHEW 5:3-12), and it carries the meaning—among other things—of “happy.”

Whatever we face, including spiritual battles and life’s hard challenges, God will sustain us in His love and will one day mercifully reward us with the beauty of His joy.
