세상에 귀닫고 그리스도의 음성만 듣기

매일 몇 시간씩 텔레비전으로 뉴스를 보던 노인은 세상이 다 망하고 자신도 그렇게 될 것 같아서 몹시 불안했습니다. “제발 좀 끄고, 이젠 그만 들으세요.” 그분의 딸이 간곡히 말했습니다. 하지만 노인은 말을 듣지 않고 소셜 미디어와 다른 뉴스 방송을 보는데 계속 많은 시간을 보냈습니다.

우리가 무엇을 듣는가 하는 것은 매우 중요한 일입니다. 우리는 예수님과 본디오 빌라도의 만남을 통해서 이것을 알 수 있습니다. 종교지도자들이 예수님을 범죄자로 고소하자 빌라도는 예수님을 소환하여 “네가 유대인의 왕이냐”(요한복음 18:33)고 물었습니다. 예수님은 전혀 뜻밖의 질문으로 대답하셨습니다. “이는 네가 스스로 하는 말이냐 다른 사람들이 나에 대하여 네게 한 말이냐”(34절).

오늘날 우리도 똑같은 질문을 받고 있습니다. 이 공황 상태의 세상에서 우리는 세상의 혼란스러운 이야기에 귀를 기울입니까, 아니면 그리스도께 귀를 기울입니까? 진실로 예수님은 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “내 양은 내 음성을 들으며 나는 그들을 알며 그들은 나를 따르느니라”(10:27). 예수님은 의심이 많은 종교지도자들에게 자신이 누구인지 설명하기 위해 “이 비유로 말씀하셨습니다”(6절). 예수님은 자신을 선한 목자라고 하시면서 말씀하셨습니다. “자기 양을 다 내놓은 후에 앞서가면 양들이 그의 음성을 아는 고로 따라오되 타인의 음성은 알지 못하는 고로 타인을 따르지 아니하고 도리어 도망하느니라”(4-5절).

우리의 선한 목자이신 예수님은 우리에게 무엇보다 그분의 말씀을 들으라고 명령하십니다. 우리가 예수님의 음성을 잘 듣고 주님이 주시는 평강을 얻을 수 있기를 바랍니다.

HEARING CHRIST, NOT CHAOS

After watching TV news for hours each day, the elderly man grew agitated and anxious—worried the world was falling apart and taking him with it. “Please turn it off,” his grown daughter begged him. “Just stop listening.” But the man continued to spend an excessive amount of time on social media and other news sources.

What we listen to matters deeply. We see this in Jesus’ encounter with Pontius Pilate. Responding to criminal charges brought against Jesus by religious leaders, Pilate summoned Him and asked, “Are you the king of the Jews?” (JOHN 18:33). Jesus replied with a stunning question: “Is that your own idea . . . or did others talk to you about me?” (V. 34).

The same question tests us. In a world of panic, are we listening to chaos or to Christ? Indeed, “my sheep listen to my voice,” He said. “I know them, and they follow me” (10:27). Jesus “used this figure of speech” (V. 6) to explain Himself to doubting religious leaders. As with a good shepherd, He said that “his sheep follow him because they know his voice. But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice” (VV. 4–5).

As our Good Shepherd, Jesus bids us to hear Him above all. May we listen well and find His peace. - PATRICIA RAYBON

하나님 말씀 붙잡기

큰할아버지의 옛날 농가 문틀에는 미네소타의 혹독한 겨울을 견딜 만큼 강인한 주철 고리가 달려 있었습니다. 이 집에서 100 피트(30 미터) 이상 떨어져 있는 낙농 창고에도 같은 고리가 단단히 붙어 있었습니다. 눈보라가 몰아칠 때면 큰할아버지는 두 고리에 줄을 달아 집과 창고를 오갔습니다. 그 줄을 꽉 잡고 가면 한 치 앞도 보이지 않는 눈보라 속에서도 길을 잃지 않았던 것입니다.

눈보라 속에서 안전줄을 사용한 큰할아버지의 모습을 떠올리면, 하나님의 지혜가 어떻게 우리의 삶을 인도하고 죄와 과오로부터 우리를 지켜주는지 다윗이 히브리 시의 구절들로 표현한 것이 생각납니다. “여호와의 법도 진실하여 다 의로우니 금 곧 많은 순금보다 더 사모할 것이며 꿀과 송이꿀보다 더 달도다 또 주의 종이 이것으로 경고를 받고 이것을 지킴으로 상이 크니이다” (시편 19:9-11).

우리 마음 속에 역사하시는 하나님의 영이 알려주는 성경의 진리를 단단히 붙잡을 때 우리는 길을 잃지 않고 하나님과 다른 사람들을 영화롭게 하는 결정들을 내릴 수 있습니다. 성경은 우리에게 하나님을 떠나 방황하지 말라고 경고하면서 올바로 본향으로 가는 길을 보여주며, 우리 구주의 아주 귀한 사랑과 그분을 믿는 모든 사람을 기다리고 있는 축복에 대해 말해줍니다. 성경은 생명줄입니다! 하나님의 도우심으로 우리가 항상 그 생명줄을 붙잡을 수 있기를 소망합니다.

GRASPING GOD’S WORD

A rugged, cast-iron ring stood strong against the harsh Minnesota winter as it hung on the doorframe of my great uncle’s old farmhouse. More than a hundred feet away was another ring, firmly fixed to the dairy barn. When there was a blizzard, my uncle would attach a line between both rings so he could find the path between the house and the barn. Keeping a firm grip on the line kept him from losing his way in the blinding snow.

My uncle’s use of a safety line in a snowstorm reminds me of how David used lines of Hebrew poetry to trace how God’s wisdom guides us through life and guards us against sin and error: “The decrees of the Lord are firm, and all of them are righteous. They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb. By them your servant is warned; in keeping them there is great reward” (PSALM 19:9–11).

A firm grasp of the truths of Scripture informed by God’s Spirit working in our hearts keeps us from losing our way and helps us make decisions that honor God and others. The Bible warns us
against wandering from God and shows us the way home. It tells us of the priceless love of our Savior and the blessings that await all who place their faith in Him. Scripture is a lifeline! May God help us cling to it always. - JAMES BANKS

함께 함으로 더 좋은

홀로 아이를 키우는 워킹맘 마리는 교회나 성경 공부에 거의 빠지지 않았습니다. 매주 그녀의 다섯 아이와 함께 버스를 타고 교회에 다니면서 교회에 가서는 예배를 준비하고 정리하는 일을 도왔습니다.

어느 주일날, 목사님이 마리에게 몇 명의 교인들이 그녀의 가족을 위해 선물을 기부했다고 알려주었습니다. 한 부부는 임대료를 낮추어 집을 빌려주었고, 다른 부부는 마리가 자기네 커피숍에서 복지혜택을 받으며 일할 수 있는 일자리를 제공했습니다. 한 젊은 남자는 자신이 수리한 중고차를 주며 고장나면 언제나 무료로 고쳐주겠다고 약속했습니다. 마리는 하나님과 서로를 섬기는 일에 헌신한 공동체에 속해 있음을 기뻐하며 하나님께 감사했습니다.

우리가 모두 마리의 교회가족처럼 관대하게 베풀지는 못할 지라도, 하나님의 백성들은 기본적으로 서로 돕도록 만들어졌습니다. 복음서의 저자 누가는 예수님을 믿는 신자들이 “사도들의 가르침을 받고 교제”하는 일에 “힘썼다”고 기록했습니다(사도행전 2:42). 우리도 초대교회 신자들처럼 우리가 가진 것을 모아 가난하고 어려운 사람들을 돕는 일을 함께 할 수 있습니다 (44-45절). 하나님과 서로 서로에게 더 가까워질수록 우리는 서로를 더 잘 돌볼 수 있습니다. 그리고 하나님의 백성들의 행동으로 드러나는 하나님의 사랑을 목격함으로써 사람들은 구원에 이르는 예수님과의 관계로 이끌림 받게 될 것입니다(46-47절).

우리는 미소나 친절한 행동으로 다른 사람들을 섬길 수 있으며, 금전적인 기부나 기도로 도울 수도 있습니다. 하나님이 우리 안에서 그리고 우리를 통해 역사하시면, 우리는 말 그대로 함께 함으로써 더 좋아지게 될 것입니다.

BETTER TOGETHER

Marie, a single working mom, rarely missed church or Bible study. Each week, she rode the bus to and from church with her five children and helped with set up and clean up.

One Sunday, the pastor told Marie that some church members had donated gifts for the family. One couple provided the family a house with reduced rent. Another couple offered her a job with benefits at their coffee shop. A young man gave her an old car he’d rebuilt and promised to serve as her personal mechanic. Marie thanked God for the joy of living in a community devoted to serving God and each other.

Though we may not all be able to give as generously as Marie’s church family, God’s people are designed to help each other. The gospel writer Luke described believers in Jesus as “devoted” to the “apostles’ teaching and to fellowship” (ACTS 2:42). When we combine our resources, we can work together to help those in need like the first believers in Jesus did (VV. 44–45). As we grow closer to God and each other, we can care for one another. Witnessing God’s love demonstrated through His people’s actions can lead others to a saving relationship with Jesus (VV. 46–47).

We can serve others with a smile or a kind deed. We can offer a financial gift or a prayer. As God works in and through us, we’re simply better together. - XOCHITL DIXON

빛을 발할 기회

2020년 3월, 금융 전문가로 은퇴한 휘트니는 뉴욕 센트럴 파크에서 반려견을 데리고 산책하던 중 십자가 표시와 함께 낯선 구호 단체의 이름이 쓰여 있는 여러 대의 트럭과 방수포 더미, 그리고 흰색 텐트들을 보았습니다. 그는 이 단체가 코로나에 걸린 뉴욕 시민들을 위해 야전 병원을 짓고 있다는 사실을 알고 자기도 도울 수 있는 일이 있는지 물었습니다. 그 후 몇 주간 그는 가족과 함께 서로의 종교와 정치적 입장을 초월하여 그곳에서 할 수 있는 모든 일에 동참했습니다. 휘트니는 말했습니다. “제가 만난 사람들 한 사람 한 사람이 다 정말 좋은 사람들이었습니다.” 그리고 그들이 모두 “아주 깊은 곤경에 빠진 내 도시를 돕기 위해” 나선 자원봉사자라는 사실에 박수를 보냈습니다.

코로나 바이러스 팬데믹으로 말미암은 엄청난 어려움에 반응하여 각기 다른 분야의 종사자들이 협력하게 되면서 예수님을 믿는 사람들에게는 다른 이들에게 그리스도의 빛을 전할 수 있는 기회가 생겼습니다. 예수님은 산상 수훈에서 제자들에게 “너희 빛이 사람 앞에 비치게 하여 그들로 너희 착한 행실을 보게 하라”(마태복음 5:16)고 가르치셨습니다. 우리는 성령님의 인도하심으로 사랑과 친절과 선한 언행으로 그리스도의 빛을 발할 수 있습니다 (갈라디아서 5:22-23 참조). 예수님에게서 받은 빛이 우리의 일상 속에서 분명한 빛을 발할 때 우리도 “하늘에 계신 [우리] 아버지께 영광을 돌리게” 됩니다 (마태복음 5:16).

매일의 삶 속에서 그리스도의 빛을 발할 수 있기를 바랍니다. 주님은 그분을 간절히 필요로 하는 이 세상에서 소금과 빛이 되도록 우리를 도와주십니다.

OPPORTUNITIES TO SHINE

In March 2020, while walking his dog in New York City’s Central Park, Whitney, a retired financial expert, saw trucks, stacks of tarps, and white tents, each bearing a cross and the name of a charity he’d never heard of before. When he discovered the group was building a field hospital for his fellow New Yorkers with COVID-19, he asked if he could help. For weeks, despite differing faiths and politics, he and his family pitched in wherever they could. Whitney stated, “Every single person I’ve met has been a genuinely nice person.” And he applauded the fact that no one was paying them to “help my city in our hour of deep, deep need.”

In response to the tremendous needs resulting from the coronavirus pandemic, unlikely partners in service were brought together, and believers in Jesus were given new opportunities to share Christ’s light with others. In His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus taught His followers to “let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds” (MATTHEW 5:16). We shine Christ’s light by letting the Spirit guide us in loving, kind, and good words and actions (SEE GALATIANS 5:22–23). When we allow the light we’ve received from Jesus to shine clearly in our daily lives, we also “glorify [our] Father in heaven” (MATTHEW 5:16).

This day and every day may we shine for Christ, as He helps us be salt and light in a world that desperately needs Him.

하나님께 소망 두기

연휴 기간을 앞두고 유례없는 온라인 주문 폭증으로 상품 배송이 지연되는 일이 빚어졌습니다. 예전에 우리 가족은 배송 시간을 원하는 대로 선택할 수 없어 직접 상점에 가서 쇼핑하는 것을 더 선호했습니다. 하지만 어머니가 빠른 배송 서비스에 가입하신 후 생각이 바뀌었습니다. 이제는 이틀 보장 배송으로 물건을 빨리 수령하는 데 익숙해졌고, 상품 배송이 지연되면 기분이 상하게 되었습니다.

우리는 즉각적인 만족에 익숙하고 기다리는 것을 힘들어하는 세상에 살고 있습니다. 하지만 영적인 영역에서는 인내가 여전히 유익합니다. 예레미야 애가가 쓰였을 당시 이스라엘 민족은 바벨론 군대에 의해 파괴된 예루살렘을 보며 슬퍼하고 있었고 각종 어려움에도 직면해 있었습니다. 그러나 그 혼돈 속에서도 저자는 하나님께서 그의 필요를 채우실 것을 확신하기에 그분을 바랄 것이라고 담대히 말했습니다(예레미야애가 3:24). 하나님은 우리가 기도의 응답이 지연될 때 불안해하는 것을 아십니다. 성경은 우리에게 하나님을 기다릴 것을 일깨우며 격려해 줍니다. “여호와의 인자와 긍휼이 무궁”(22절) 하시기 때문에 우리는 지치거나 근심 가운데 있을 필요가 없습니다. 그 대신 하나님의 도우심을 힘입어 “여호와 앞에 잠잠하고... 기다릴”(시편 37:7) 수 있습니다. 원하는 일이나 응답되지 않는 기도로 씨름할 때에도 그분의 사랑과 신실하심을 믿으며 하나님을 기다릴 수 있기를 바랍니다.

HOPE IN GOD

As the holiday season approached, package shipments were delayed due to an unprecedented influx of online orders. I can remember a time when my family preferred to simply go to the store and purchase items because we knew we had very little control over the speed of mail delivery. However, when my mother signed up for an account that included expedited shipping, this expectation changed. Now with a two-day guaranteed delivery, we’re accustomed to receiving things quickly, and we become frustrated by delays.

We live in a world accustomed to instant gratification, and waiting can be difficult. But in the spiritual realm, patience is still rewarded. When the book of Lamentations was written, the Israelites were mourning the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonian army, and they faced a series of challenges. However, in the midst of chaos, the writer boldly affirmed that because he was confident that God would meet his needs, he would wait on Him (LAMENTATIONS 3:24). God knows we’re inclined to become anxious when answers to our prayers are delayed. Scripture encourages us by reminding us to wait on God. We don’t have to be consumed or worried because “his compassions never fail” (V. 22). Instead, with God’s help we can “be still . . . and wait patiently for him” (PSALM 37:7). May we wait on God, trusting in His love and faithfulness even as we wrestle with longings and unanswered prayers.

약함이 강함 될 때

드류는 예수님을 섬긴 이유로 2년간 감옥에 있었습니다. 그는 선교사들이 투옥 중에도 늘 기뻐했다는 이야기를 읽었지만 자신은 그렇지 못했다고 고백했습니다. 그가 아내에게 하나님께서 고난을 감당할 사람을 잘못 택하신 것 같다고 털어놓자 아내는 이렇게 대답했습니다. “아니에요. 하나님께서는 꼭 맞는 사람을 택하셨어요. 우연히 택하신 것이 아니에요.”

드류는 예레미야 선지자와 비슷한 처지였던 것 같습니다. 예레미야는 유다가 그들의 죄악으로 하나님의 심판을 받을 것이라고 경고하며 하나님을 충실히 섬겼습니다. 하지만 하나님의 심판이 곧바로 임하지 않자 유다의 지도자들은 그를 매질하고 옥에 가두었습니다. 예레미야는 “주께서 저를 속이셨습니다”(7절, 현대인의 성경)라고 하나님을 원망하며 하나님이 약속을 안 지키셨다고 생각했습니다. 하나님의 말씀으로 그는 “종일토록 치욕과 모욕거리”가 되었습니다(8절). 예레미야는 말했습니다. “내 생일이 저주를 받았더라면”, “어찌하여 내가 태에서 나와서 고생과 슬픔을 보며 나의 날을 부끄러움으로 보내는고”(14, 18절).

마침내 드류는 석방되었습니다. 하지만 그는 그의 시련을 통해 하나님이 예레미야를 택하셨던 것처럼 어쩌면 자신도 약했기 때문에 하나님이 그를 택하셨다는 것을 깨닫기 시작했습니다. 드류와 예레미야가 본래 강한 사람들이었다면 성공의 일부는 자신의 공으로 돌아갔을지도 모릅니다. 하지만 본래 약한 자였기 때문에 인내의 모든 영광은 하나님께 돌아가는 것입니다 (고린도전서 1:26-31). 드류는 연약했기 때문에 예수님이 쓰기에 꼭 맞는 사람이 된 것입니다.

WHEN WEAKNESS IS STRENGTH

Drew had been imprisoned for two years because he served Jesus. He’d read stories of missionaries who felt constant joy throughout their incarceration, but he confessed this was not his experience. He told his wife that God had picked the wrong man to suffer for Him. She replied, “No. I think maybe He picked the right man. This was not an accident.”

Drew could likely relate to the prophet Jeremiah, who had faithfully served God by warning Judah that God would punish them for their sins. But God’s judgment hadn’t fallen yet, and Judah’s leaders beat Jeremiah and put him in stocks. Jeremiah blamed God: “You deceived me, Lord” (V. 7). The prophet believed God had failed to deliver. His word had only “brought [him] insult and reproach all day long” (V. 8). “Cursed be the day I was born!” Jeremiah said. “Why did I ever come out of the womb to see trouble and sorrow and to end my days in shame?” (VV. 14, 18).

Eventually Drew was released, but through his ordeal he began to understand that perhaps God chose him—much like He chose Jeremiah—because he was weak. If he and Jeremiah had been naturally strong, they might have received some of the praise for their success. But if they were naturally weak, all the glory for their perseverance would go to God (1 CORINTHIANS 1:26–31). His frailty made him the perfect person for Jesus to use.

FOR THE SAKE OF THE GOSPEL

The year was 1916 and Nelson had just graduated from medical school in his native Virginia. Later that year, he and his bride of six months arrived in China. At the age of twenty-two he became a surgeon at Love and Mercy Hospital, the only hospital in an area of at least two million Chinese residents. Nelson, together with his family, lived in the area for twenty-four more years, running the hospital, performing surgeries, and sharing the gospel with thousands of people. From once being called “foreign devil” by those who distrusted foreigners, Nelson Bell later became known as “The Bell Who Is Lover of the Chinese People.” His daughter Ruth was to later marry the evangelist Billy Graham.

Although Nelson was a brilliant surgeon and Bible teacher, it wasn’t his skills that drew many to Jesus, it was his character and the way he lived out the gospel. In Paul’s letter to Titus, the young gentile leader who was taking care of the church in Crete, the apostle said that living like Christ is crucial because it can make the gospel “attractive” (TITUS 2:10). Yet we don’t do this on our own strength. God’s grace helps us live “self-controlled, upright and godly lives” (V. 12), reflecting the truths of our faith (V. 1).

Many people around us still don’t know the good news of Christ, but they know us. May He help us reflect and reveal His message in attractive ways.

형제자매처럼

한 지도자가 내게 와서 캐런을 개인상담해줄 수 있는지 물었고 나는 수련회장 상담실에서 충혈된 눈에 눈물로 뺨이 젖어 있는 캐런을 만났습니다. 42세의 캐런은 결혼을 꿈꿔왔고, 현재 한 남자가 그녀에게
관심을 보이고 있었습니다. 그런데 캐런의 직장 상사인 그 남자는 이미 아내가 있는 사람이었습니다.

짓궂게 괴롭히는 오빠, 그리고 애정이 없는 아버지 곁에서 자란 캐런은 자신에게 접근하는 남자에게 쉽게 흔들리는 경향이 있다는 것을 일찍이 알고 있었습니다. 신앙을 재정비하며 삶의 기준도 새로 정해보았지만 그녀의 갈망은 여전했고 이룰 수 없는 그 사랑의 환상은 고통 그 자체였습니다.

상담을 마친 후 캐런과 나는 함께 고개를 숙였습니다. 솔직하고 힘 있는 기도 속에서 캐런은 잘못된 유혹을 고백하며 직장 상사를 만나지 않기로 선언하고, 그녀의 갈망을 하나님께 의탁했습니다. 그리고 홀가분한 마음으로 방을 나섰습니다.

그날 나는 믿음 안에서 서로를 형제자매로 대하라는 바울의 현명한 충고가 떠올랐습니다(디모데전서 5:1-2). 사람들을 바라보는 시선은 그들을 대하는 방식을 결정합니다. 이성을 쉽게 물건 취급하고 성적 대상으로 여기는 이 세상에서 상대방을 가족과 같이 바라본다면 그들을 배려하고 예의 있게 대하는 데 도움이 됩니다. 건강한 형제와 자매라면 서로를 학대하거나 잘못된 성적 유혹에 빠지지 않습니다.

캐런이 알았던 남자들은 모두 그녀를 비하하고 이용하고 무시했던 사람들뿐이었기에 그녀는 이제 남매처럼 이야기할 수 있는 누군가가 필요 했습니다. 복음으로 우리는 삶의 문제를 직면하는데 도움을 줄 새 형제자매를 만날 수 있습니다. 그것이 복음의 아름다움입니다.

SISTER TO BROTHER

When a leader asked if I’d speak with her privately, I found Karen in the retreat center counseling room red-eyed and wet-cheeked. Forty-two years old, Karen longed to be married, and a man was currently showing interest in her. But this man was her boss—and he already had a wife.

With a brother who cruelly teased her and a father devoid of affection, Karen discovered early that she was susceptible to men’s advances. A renewal of faith had given her new boundaries to live by, but her longing remained, and this glimpse of a love she couldn’t have was a torment.

After talking, Karen and I bowed our heads. And in a raw and powerful prayer, Karen confessed her temptation, declared her boss off-limits, handed her longing to God, and left the room feeling lighter.

That day, I realized the brilliance of Paul’s advice to treat each other as brothers and sisters in the faith (1 TIMOTHY 5:1–2). How we see people determines how we interact with them, and in a world quick to objectify and sexualize, viewing the opposite sex as family helps us treat them with care and propriety. Healthy brothers and sisters don’t abuse or seduce each other.

Having only known men who demeaned, used, or ignored her, Karen needed one she could talk with sister-to-brother. The beauty of the gospel is it provides just that—giving us new siblings to help us face life’s problems.

훈련생

‘훈련생’은 벤 말콤슨이 쓴 흥미로운 회고록의 제목입니다. 미식축구 경기 경험이 거의 없었던 그는 2007년도 로즈 볼 챔피언 남가주대학 미식축구팀에 선발된 선수가 아닌 ‘훈련생’으로 들어갔습니다. 대학의 기자였던 말콤슨은 자신이 직접 경험한 고된 선발 과정을 글로 쓰기로 했는데, 그는 놀랍게도 그토록 원했던 팀에서 한자리를 차지하게 되었습니다.

WALK ON

Walk On is the fascinating memoir of Ben Malcolmson, a student with virtually no football experience who became a “walk on”—a non-recruited player—for the 2007 University of Southern California Rose Bowl champion team. A college journalist, Malcolmson decided to write a first-person account of the grueling tryout process. To his disbelief, he won a coveted spot on the team.

After joining the team, Malcolmson’s faith compelled him to find God’s purpose for him in this unexpected opportunity. But his teammates’ indifference to discussions of faith left him discouraged. As he prayed for direction, Malcolmson read the powerful reminder in Isaiah where God says: “My word . . . will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it” (ISAIAH 55:11). Inspired by Isaiah’s words, Malcolmson anonymously gave every player on the team a Bible. Again, he was met with rejection. But years later, Malcolmson learned one player had read the Bible he’d been given—and shortly before his tragic death had demonstrated a relationship with and hunger for God, who he discovered in the pages of that Bible.

It’s likely that many of us have shared Jesus with a friend or family member, only to be met with indifference or outright rejection. But even when we don’t see results right away, God’s truth is powerful and will accomplish His purposes in His timing.

미리 아시는 하나님 신뢰하기

남편 댄은 운전하다가 낯선 곳으로 들어서면서 내비게이션의 안내가 갑자기 잘못된 것 같다고 생각했습니다. 평소 잘 알던 4차선 고속도로를 가던 중이었는데, 갑자기 출구로 빠져서 고속도로와 인접한 1차선 ‘지선’ 도로를 이용하라는 안내가 있었기 때문입니다. 별다른 교통 정체도 없었지만 댄은 “그래, 너를 믿을게.”라고 하며 고속도로를 빠져나왔습니다. 하지만 약 10마일 정도 지나자 고속도로 쪽에는 극심한 교통 정체가 생겼습니다. 대규모 도로 공사가 진행 중이었던 것이었습니다. 지선 도로 쪽은 어땠을 까요? 차량들이 별로 없어 우리는 무사히 목적지에 도달할 수 있었습니다. 댄이 말했습니다. “나는 앞을 볼 수 없었는데 내비게이션은 보고 있었네.” 같이 있던 우리도 “마치 하나님처럼”이라고 말하며 동감했습니다.

앞일을 알고 계신 하나님은 “유대인의 왕으로 나신”(마태복음 2:2) 예수님을 경배하기 위해 동방에서 온 현인들에게 길을 바꾸어 가라고 꿈을 통해 알려주셨습니다. 헤롯 왕은 자신의 “경쟁자” 왕의 탄생 소식을 듣고 불안하여 동방 박사들을 베들레헴으로 보내며 이렇게 거짓말을 했습니다. “가서 아기에 대하여 자세히 알아보고 찾거든 내게 고하여 나도 가서 그에게 경배하게 하라”(8절). 하지만 그들은 꿈에서 “헤롯에게로 돌아가지 말라”는 지시를 받고 “다른 길로 고국에 돌아갔습니다”(12절).

하나님은 우리의 발걸음도 인도해 주십니다. 인생이라는 고속도로를 여행할 때 우리는 그분께서 앞길을 알고 계심을 믿으며, 우리가 그분의 인도하심에 순종할 때 “[우리의] 길을 지도하시리라”(잠언 3:6)는 것을 확신할 수 있습니다.

TRUSTING GOD’S FORESIGHT

While driving us to an unfamiliar location, my husband noticed that the GPS directions suddenly seemed wrong. After entering a reliable four-lane highway, we were advised to exit and travel along a one-lane “frontage” road running parallel to us. “I’ll just trust it,” Dan said, despite seeing no delays. After about ten miles, however, the traffic on the highway next to us slowed to a near standstill. The trouble? Major construction. And the frontage road? With little traffic, it provided a clear path to our destination. “I couldn’t see ahead,” Dan said, “but the GPS could.” Or, as we agreed, “just like God can.”

Knowing what was ahead, God in a dream gave a similar change in directions to the wise men who’d come from the east to worship Jesus, “born king of the Jews” (MATTHEW 2:2). King Herod, disturbed
by the news of a “rival” king, lied to the magi, sending them to Bethlehem, saying: “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him” (V. 8). Warned in a dream “not to go back to Herod,” however, “they returned to their country by another route” (V. 12).

God will guide our steps too. As we travel life’s highways, we can trust that He sees ahead and remain confident that “he will make [our] paths straight” as we submit to His directions (PROVERBS 3:6).
