칠면조 피하기

야생 칠면조 두 마리가 시골길 앞쪽에 서 있었습니다. ‘얼마나 가까이 그들에게 다가갈 수 있을까?’ 나는 궁금했습니다. 나는 달리는 속도를 늦추어 천천히 걷다가 멈추어 섰습니다. 그때까지는 괜찮았습니다. 그런데 칠면조가 나를 향해 걷기 시작하더니... 계속 다가왔습니다. 그리고 순식간에 내 허리를 쪼아 대고 내 뒤쪽도 쪼아댔습니다. ‘부리가 왜 이리 날카롭지?’ 나는 달아났습니다. 칠면조는 내 뒤를 뒤뚱뒤뚱 쫓아오다가 결국 쫓는 것을 포기했습니다.

얼마나 순식간에 벌어진 반전이었는지요! 칠면조가 주도권을 잡아 사냥감에서 사냥꾼으로 변했던 것입니다. 어리석게도 나는 그들이 지능이 너무 낮아서 무서워하지 않아도 될 거라고 여겼었습니다. 나는 어처구니없이 새에게 공격당해 다칠 생각은 없었기에 결국 도망치고 말았습니다. 칠면조에게서 말입니다.

골리앗은 다윗이 위험해 보이지 않았기에 그를 조롱하여 가까이 오라고 하며 이렇게 말했습니다. “내게로 오라 그러면 내가 네 살을 공중의 새들과 들짐승들에게 주리라”(사무엘상 17:44). 하지만 상황이 반전되어 다윗이 주도권을 쥐게 되었습니다. 다윗이 골리앗을 향해 달려갈 수 있었던 것은 그가 어리석었기 때문이 아니라 하나님을 신뢰했기 때문이었습니다. 다윗은 “오늘... 온 땅으로 이스라엘에 하나님이 계신 줄 알게 하겠다”(46절)고 소리쳤습니다. 골리앗은 이 기세당당한 소년을 보고 당황했습니다. ‘도대체 무슨 일이지?’ 그는 분명 그렇게 생각했을 것입니다. 그 순간 골리앗의 두 눈 사이로 돌이 날아와 그를 쳤습니다.

작은 동물들이 사람이나 양치기 개처럼 자신보다 큰 대상으로부터 도망치는 것은 자연스러운 일입니다. 우리가 삶의 문제를 피해 숨는 것도 자연스럽습니다. ‘하지만 왜 본능에만 안주하고 있습니까?’ 이스라엘에는 하나님이 계시지 않나요? 그렇다면 그분의 능력을 힘입어 전쟁터로 달려가십시오.

FLEEING FROM TURKEYS

Two wild turkeys stood in the country lane ahead. How close could I get? I wondered. I slowed my jog to a walk, then stopped. It worked. The turkeys walked toward me . . . and kept coming. In seconds, their heads were bobbing at my waist, then behind me. How sharp were those beaks? I ran away. They waddled after me before giving up the chase.

How quickly the tables had turned! The hunted had become the hunter when the turkeys seized the initiative. Foolishly, I had wondered if they were too dumb to be scared. I wasn’t about to be carelessly wounded by a bird, so I fled. From turkeys.

David didn’t seem dangerous, so Goliath taunted him to come near. “ ‘Come here,’ he said, ‘and I’ll give your flesh to the birds and the wild animals!’ ” (1 SAMUEL 17:44). David flipped the script when he seized the initiative. He ran toward Goliath, not because he was foolish but because he had confidence in God. He shouted, “This very day . . . the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel” (V. 46). Goliath was puzzled by this aggressive boy. What’s going on? he must have thought. Then it hit him. Right between the eyes.

It’s natural for small animals to run from people and shepherds to avoid giants. It’s natural for us to hide from our problems. Why settle for natural? Is there a God in Israel? Then, in His power, run toward the fight.

진정한 변화

난폭한 가정에서 성장한 남부 런던 출신의 클라우드는 15살에 마리화나를 팔기 시작했고 25살에는 헤로인을 팔았습니다. 그는 자신의 범죄 행위를 가리려고 청소년 멘토로서 활동하기 시작했습니다. 얼마 지나지 않아 그는 예수님을 믿는 그의 매니저에게 호기심을 느끼고 신앙에 대해 더 알고 싶어졌습니다. 그는 기독교인의 믿음에 대해 공부하는 모임에 참석한 후 “용기를 내어” 예수님을 그의 삶 속에 모셔 들였습니다. 그는 말했습니다. “나는 나를 환영하는 어떤 존재를 느꼈습니다. 사람들은 내가 변화된 것을 즉시 알아보았습니다. 나는 세상에서 가장 행복한 마약상이었습니다!”

바울 사도도 에베소 교회에 보낸 편지에 이와 같은 변화를 언급했습니다. 그는 하나님과 분리된 삶을 살지 말 것을 요구하면서, “너희는 유혹의 욕심을 따라 썩어져 가는 구습을 따르는 옛 사람을 벗어 버리고” 그 대신 “하나님을 따라 의와 진리의 거룩함으로 지으심을 받은 새 사람을 입으라”(에베소서 4:22, 24)고 권면했습니다. 바울이 사용했던 동사의 형태는 우리가 규칙적으로 새 사람을 입어야 한다는 것을 의미합니다.

성령님은 우리가 클라우드처럼 새사람으로 변화되어 살면서 예수님을 더욱 닮아갈 수 있도록 도와주시기를 기뻐하십니다.

TRUE CHANGE

Raised in a turbulent home in South London, Claud started selling marijuana at fifteen and heroin when he was twentyfive. Needing a cover for his activities, he became a mentor to young people. Soon he became intrigued by his manager, a believer in Jesus, and wanted to know more. After attending a course exploring the Christian faith, he “dared” Christ to come into his life. “I felt such a welcoming presence,” he said. “People saw a change in me instantly. I was the happiest drug dealer in the world!”

Jesus didn’t stop there. When Claud weighed up a bag of cocaine the next day, he thought, This is madness. I’m poisoning people! He realized he must stop selling drugs and get a job. With the help of the Holy Spirit, he turned off his phones and never went back.

This kind of change is what the apostle Paul referenced when he wrote to the church at Ephesus. Calling the people not to live separated from God, he urged them to “put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires” and instead to “put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness” (EPHESIANS 4:22, 24). The verb form Paul used implies that we’re to put on the new self regularly.

As with Claud, the Holy Spirit delights to help us to live out of our new selves and become more like Jesus.

분노의 마음

파블로 피카소의 작품 중 정치적 메시지가 담긴 가장 중요한 그림인 ‘게르니카’는 1937년 당시 스페인의 소도시 게르니카에 있었던 폭격을 모더니즘적으로 묘사한 작품입니다. 제2차 세계대전 발발로 이어진 스페인 혁명 동안 스페인 민족주의 세력은 나치 독일군에게 게르니카를 비행기 폭격 훈련 장소로 쓸 수 있도록 허락했습니다. 논란 속에 행해진 폭격 훈련으로 많은 인명 피해가 발생했고 민간인을 표적으로 삼은 비윤리적인 행위에 전 세계의 이목이 집중되었습니다. 피카소의 그림은 세계 사람들의 상상력을 사로잡았고, 서로를 파괴하는 인류의 능력에 대한 논쟁을 촉발시켰습니다.

우리가 절대 고의적으로 피를 부르지는 않을 것이라고 자신하는 사람들은 예수님의 다음 말씀을 명심해야 합니다. “옛 사람에게 말한 바 살인하지 말라 누구든지 살인하면 심판을 받게 되리라 하였다는 것을 너희가 들었으나 나는 너희에게 이르노니 형제에게 노하는 자마다 심판을 받게 되고”(마태복음 5:21-22). 실제 살인을 저지르지 않고도 마음으로 살인할 수 있습니다.

다른 사람들을 향한 참을 수 없는 분노가 우리를 삼키려 할 때, 우리는 간절하게 성령께서 우리의 마음을 채우고 다스리게 하심으로 인간의 본능이 성령의 열매로 대체될 수 있게 해야 합니다(갈라디아서 5:19-23). 그럴 때 사랑과 기쁨, 그리고 평안이 우리의 관계 속에 자리 잡게 됩니다.

HEART OF ANGER

Guernica, Pablo Picasso’s most important political painting, was a modernist portrayal of the 1937 destruction of a small Spanish town by that name. During the Spanish revolution and the ramp-up to World War II, Nazi Germany’s planes were permitted by Spain’s Nationalist forces to use the town for bombing practice. These controversial bombings took scores of lives, drawing the attention of a global community concerned over the immorality of bombing civilian targets. Picasso’s painting captured the imaginations of the watching world and became a catalyst for debate about humanity’s capacity to destroy one another.

For those of us who feel confident that we would never intentionally shed blood, we should remember Jesus’ words, “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment” (MATTHEW 5:21–22). The heart can be murderous without ever actually committing murder.

When unchecked anger toward others threatens to consume us, we desperately need the Holy Spirit to fill and control our hearts so that our human tendencies can be replaced by the fruit of the Spirit (GALATIANS 5:19–23). Then, love, joy, and peace can mark our relationships.

긍휼의 마음 갖기

한 TV 방송에서 눈에 관련된 가벼운 불상사들을 모아 5분짜리 영상으로 제작하여 방영했습니다. 지붕에서 스키를 타는 모습, 튜브를 타다가 부딪치는 모습, 얼음 위에서 미끄러지는 모습 등을 담은 영상에 스튜디오 안의 관객들과 TV 시청자들은 웃음과 환호를 터트렸습니다. 특히 본인들의 실수로 인해 우스꽝스러운 모습을 보여준 사람들의 영상이 더 큰 웃음을 자아냈습니다.

재미있는 영상을 보는 것이 나쁜 것은 아니지만 한 가지 우리를 일깨워주는 부분이 있습니다. 그것은 우리가 다른 이들의 어려움을 이용하거나 웃음거리로 삼을 수 있다는 것입니다. 서로 경쟁 국가인 이스라엘과 에돔에 관해 그런 이야기가 오바댜서에 기록되어 있습니다. 하나님께서 이스라엘의 죄로 그들을 벌하는 것이 당연하다고 여기자 에돔이 기뻐했습니다. 에돔은 그 상황을 악용하여 이스라엘 도시들을 약탈하고, 그들의 탈출을 방해하며, 그들의 적들을 지원했습니다(오바댜 1:13-14). 그러자 오바댜 선지자에게 에돔을 향한 경고의 말씀이 임했습니다. “여호와께서 만국을 벌할 날이 가까웠나니” “네가 형제의 날 곧 그 재앙의 날에 방관할 것이 아니며”(12, 15절).

CHOOSING COMPASSION

A five-minute montage of snow-related mishaps was the central piece to one episode of a TV show. Home videos of people skiing off rooftops, crashing into objects while tubing, and slipping on ice brought laughter and applause from the studio audience and people watching at home. The laughter seemed to be loudest when it appeared that the people who wiped out deserved it because of their own foolish behavior.

Funny home videos aren’t a bad thing, but they can reveal something about ourselves: we can be prone to laugh at or take advantage of the hardships of others. One such story is recorded in Obadiah about two rival nations, Israel and Edom. When God saw fit to punish Israel for their sin, Edom rejoiced. They took advantage of the Israelites, looted their cities, thwarted their escape, and supported their enemies (OBADIAH 1:13–14). A word of warning came through the prophet Obadiah to Edom: “You should not gloat over your brother in the day of his misfortune,” for “the day of the Lord is near for all nations” (VV. 12, 15).

When we see the challenges or suffering of others, even if it seems they’ve brought it upon themselves, we must choose compassion over pride. We’re not in a position to judge others. Only God can do that. The kingdom of this world belongs to Him (V. 21)—He alone holds the power of justice and mercy.

섬세하신 하나님

케빈과 킴벌리에게는 아주 힘든 한 주간이었습니다. 케빈의 발작 증세가 갑자기 심해져 병원에 입원하게 되었던 것입니다. 입양한 네 자녀는 팬데믹 속에서 집에만 있다 보니 짜증이 극도로 심해졌습니다. 게다가 냉장고의 음식도 떨어져 킴벌리는 식사 준비를 할 수가 없었습니다. 그 와중에 킴벌리는 뜬금없이 당근이 먹고 싶었습니다.

한 시간 후 누군가가 현관문을 두드렸습니다. 친구 아만다와 앤디가 한 가족이 모두 먹을 양의 음식을 들고 문 앞에 서 있었는데, 그 안에는 ‘당근’ 도 있었습니다.

‘악마도 이렇게 섬세할 수 있을까요?’ 아닙니다. 유대 민족의 역사에서 섬세하신 하나님의 모습을 보여주는 한 놀라운 이야기가 있습니다. 애굽 왕 바로는 “아들이 태어나거든 너희는 그를 나일 강에 던지라”(출애굽기 1:22) 고 명령했습니다. 이 대량학살 사건은 놀랍도록 섬세하게 전개되었습니다. 모세의 어머니는 비록 계획에 의한 것이기는 했어도 실제로 아들을 나일강에 “던졌습니다.” 그리고 장차 하나님께서 그의 백성을 구할 자로 택하신 그 아기는 바로의 딸에 의해 나일강에서 구출됩니다. 바로의 딸은 모세의 어머니를 데려와 삯을 주며 아기에게 젖을 먹이기까지 했습니다!(2:9).

이렇게 생겨난 유대 민족으로부터 훗날 약속된 아기가 탄생하게 됩니다. 그분의 이야기는 놀랍도록 섬세하고 인간이 알 수 없는 아이러니들로 가득합니다. 그러나 무엇보다 중요한 것은 예수님께서 우리를 죄의 노예 상태에서 해방시켜 주신다는 것입니다.

고난의 때에 특히 하나님은 섬세한 모습을 보여주십니다. 킴벌리는 분명 “하나님께서 당근을 보내주셨어요!”라고 말했을 것입니다.

GOD IN THE DETAILS

It had been an awful week for Kevin and Kimberley. Kevin’s seizures had suddenly worsened, and he’d been hospitalized. Amid the pandemic, their four young children—siblings adopted from foster care—were taking cabin fever to a new extreme. On top of that, Kimberley couldn’t scrounge up a decent meal from the fridge. Oddly, at that moment, she craved carrots.

An hour later, there was a knock at the door. There stood their friends Amanda and Andy with an entire meal she’d prepared for the family. Including carrots.

They say the devil is in the details? No. An amazing story in the history of the Jewish people shows God is in the details. Pharaoh had commanded, “Every Hebrew boy that is born you must throw into the Nile” (EXODUS 1:22). That genocidal development turned on a remarkable detail. Moses’ mother did indeed “throw” her baby into the Nile, albeit with a strategy. And from the Nile, Pharaoh’s own daughter would rescue the baby whom God used to rescue His people. She would even pay Moses’ mother to nurse him! (2:9).

One day from this fledgling Jewish nation would come a promised baby boy. His story would abound with amazing details and divine ironies. Most importantly, Jesus would provide an exodus out of our slavery to sin.

Even—especially—in the dark times, God is in the details. As Kimberley will tell you, “God brought me carrots!”

즐거워할 이유

글렌다 부인이 교회 친교실에 들어서자 늘 기쁨으로 가득한 그녀의 모습에 주위의 분위기가 환해졌습니다. 그녀는 힘든 수술을 받고 막 회복한 상태였습니다. 예배 후 늘 만났던 것처럼 그녀가 나에게로 다가오자, 나는 지난 몇 년간 그녀가 나와 함께 울어주고, 따뜻이 타이르기도 하고, 용기를 주었던 시간들을 생각하며 하나님께 감사드렸습니다. 그녀는 내 기분을 상하게 했다고 느꼈을 때는 용서를 구하기도 했습니다. 어떤 상황에서도 어려운 일이 있으면 솔직히 나누어 달라고 언제나 말해주었고, 우리에게는 하나님을 찬양할 많은 이유가 있다는 사실도 일깨워 주었습니다.

내가 ‘마마 글렌다’라고 불렀던 그녀는 나를 부드럽게 안아주며 “우리 이쁜이, 안녕”이라고 인사했습니다. 즐거운 대화를 짧게 나누고 같이 기도한 후 그녀는 늘 그렇듯 콧노래를 부르며 축복해줄 다음 사람을 찾아갔습니다.

시편 64편에서 다윗은 근심과 두려움을 지닌 채로 담대히 하나님께 나아갔습니다(1절). 그는 자신을 둘러싼 악행에 대해 절망감을 토로했지만 (2-6절) 하나님의 능력과 확실한 약속에 대한 믿음을 잃지 않았습니다(7-9절). 그는 언젠가 “의인은 여호와로 말미암아 즐거워하며 그에게 피하리니 마음이 정직한 자는 다 자랑하리라”(10절)는 것을 알고 있었습니다.

예수님의 재림을 기다리는 동안 우리는 어려운 시기를 맞게 될 것입니다. 그러나 하나님이 창조하신 매일의 삶 속에서 즐거워할 이유가 우리에게 언제나 있을 것입니다.

REASONS TO REJOICE

When Ms. Glenda walked into the church commons area, her infectious joy filled the room. She had just recovered from a difficult medical procedure. As she approached me for our usual after-church greeting, I thanked God for all the times over the years that she’s wept with me, gently corrected me, and offered encouragement. She’s even asked for forgiveness when she’s thought she’s hurt my feelings. Whatever the situation, she always invites me to share my struggles honestly and reminds me that we have many reasons to praise God.

Mama Glenda, as she lets me call her, wrapped me in a gentle hug. “Hi, Baby,” she said. We enjoyed a short conversation and prayed together. Then she left—humming and singing as always, looking for someone else to bless.

In Psalm 64, David boldly approached God with his complaints and concerns (V. 1). He voiced his frustrations about the wickedness he saw around him (VV. 2–6). He didn’t lose confidence in God’s power or the reliability of His promises (VV. 7–9). He knew that one day, “The righteous will rejoice in the Lord and take refuge in him; all the upright in heart will glory in him!” (V. 10).

As we wait for Jesus’ return, we’ll face tough times. But we’ll always have reasons to rejoice in every day God has made.

토마스 아퀴나스(1225-1274)는 당시 믿음을 가장 잘 지킨 그리스도인의 하나로 알려졌었습니다. 그런데 세상을 떠나기 불과 3개월 전 어떤 계기로 일생을 바쳐 작업해 온 대작 ‘신학 대전’을 거기서 멈추기로 했습니다. 그는 구주 예수의 찢기신 몸과 흘리신 피를 묵상하다가 말로 형언할 수 없는 환상을 본 것입니다. 그는 말했습니다. “나는 더 이상 쓸 수가 없습니다. 그것을 본 후로 내 글은 한낱 지푸라기같이 여겨졌습니다.”

아퀴나스에 앞서 바울도 어떤 환상을 보았습니다. 그는 고린도후서에서 자신의 경험을 이렇게 기록했습니다. “내가 이런 사람을 아노니 (그가 몸 안에 있었는지 몸 밖에 있었는지 나는 모르거니와 하나님은 아시느니라）그가 낙원으로 이끌려 가서 말로 표현할 수 없는 말을 들었으니”(12:3-4).

바다같이 무한한 어떤 굉장한 것을 보았던 바울과 아퀴나스는 그것을 말이나 이성으로 표현할 수 없어 우리의 상상에 맡겼습니다. 환상을 본 아퀴나스는 자신의 아들을 보내어 우리를 위해 십자가에 희생시키신 하나님께 자기가 무얼 더 보탤 것이 없다는 결론에서 그의 저서를 완성하려는 마음을 접었습니다. 이에 비해 바울은 서신을 계속 써 나갔지만, 그도 자신의 능력으로는 제대로 표현하거나 마칠 수 없음을 깨닫는 가운데 썼던 것입니다.

바울은 그리스도를 섬기며 겪었던 모든 역경 가운데서도(고린도후서 11:16-33; 12:8-9) 뒤돌아볼 때 자신의 연약함 속에서도 형언할 수 없는 그분의 은혜와 선하심, 그리고 경이로움을 발견할 수 있었습니다.

BEYOND WORDS

Thomas Aquinas (1225–1274) was one of the church’s most celebrated defenders of the faith. Yet just three months before his death, something caused him to leave unfinished his Summa Theologica, the massive legacy of his life’s work. While reflecting on the broken body and shed blood of his Savior, Aquinas claimed to see a vision that left him without words. He said, “I can write no more. I have seen things that make my writings seem like straw.”

Before Aquinas, Paul too had a vision. In 2 Corinthians, he described the experience: “[I]—whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, but God knows—was caught up to paradise and heard inexpressible things” (12:3–4).

Paul and Aquinas left us to reflect on an ocean of goodness that neither words nor reason can express. The implications of what Aquinas saw left him without hope of finishing his work in a way that would do justice to a God who sent His Son to be crucified for us. By contrast, Paul continued to write, but he did so in the awareness of what he couldn’t express or finish in his own strength.

In all the troubles Paul encountered in service to Christ (2 CORINTHIANS 11:16–33; 12:8–9), he could look back and see, in his weakness, a grace and goodness beyond words and wonder.

하나님께서 말씀하시니

1876년 발명가 알렉산더 그래함 벨이 최초로 전화기를 통해 말을 했습니다. 그는 조수였던 토마스 왓슨에게 전화를 걸어 “왓슨, 볼 일이 있으니 이리로 와 주게.”라고 말했습니다. 통화 음성이 갈라지고 명확하게 들리지는 않았지만 왓슨은 벨의 말을 알아들었습니다. 이 최초의 전화 통화로 인간의 소통 방법에 새로운 시대가 열렸습니다.

성경에 기록된 하나님의 첫 번째 말씀 “빛이 있으라”(3절) 하신 말씀으로 “혼돈하고 공허”한 땅(창세기 1:2)에 첫 번째 날의 동이 텄습니다. 창조의 권능이 이 말씀 안에 차 있었습니다. 하나님은 말씀하셨고, 선포된 말씀은 모두 현실이 되었습니다(시편 33:6, 9). 하나님이 “빛이 있으라”라고 말씀하시니 빛이 있었고, 그 말씀으로 어둠과 혼돈이 밝은 빛과 질서에 굴복하는 승리가 즉시 이루어졌습니다. 어둠의 권세에 대한 하나님의 답은 빛이었습니다. 그리고 하나님은 빛을 창조하신 후 보시기에 “좋았다”고 하셨습니다(창세기 1:4).

하나님의 첫 번째 말씀은 지금까지도 예수님을 믿는 사람들의 삶에 권능으로 임합니다. 매일 아침 동이 틀 때마다 하나님이 우리 삶 속에 그 말씀을 다시 선포해 주시는 것 같습니다. 밤의 어두움이나 삶 속에 겪는 어두움들이 하나님의 광채 앞에 물러나는 것을 볼 때, 우리가 그분을 찬양하고 그분께서 우리를 부르셨고 돌보신다는 사실에 감사할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

GOD SPOKE

In 1876, inventor Alexander Graham Bell spoke the very first words on a telephone. He called his assistant, Thomas Watson, saying, “Watson, come here. I want to see you.” Crackly and indistinct, but intelligible, Watson heard what Bell had said. The first words spoken by Bell over a phone line proved that a new day for human communication had dawned.

Establishing the dawn of the first day into the “formless and empty” earth (GENESIS 1:2), God spoke His first words recorded in Scripture: “Let there be light” (V. 3). These words were filled with creative power. He spoke, and what He declared came into existence (PSALM 33:6, 9). God said, “let there be light” and so it was. His words produced immediate victory as darkness and chaos gave way to the brilliance of light and order. Light was God’s answer to the dominance of darkness. And when He had created the light, He saw that it “was good” (GENESIS 1:4).

God’s first words continue to be powerful in the lives of believers in Jesus. With the dawning of each new day, it’s as if God is restating His spoken words in our lives. When darkness—literally and metaphorically—gives way to the brilliance of His light, may we praise Him and acknowledge that He’s called out to us and truly sees us.

내주하시는 그리스도

영국의 목회자 F.B. 메이어(1847-1929)는 “심오한 그리스도의 내주하심” 이라고 불렀던 그의 주제를 설명하기 위해 달걀을 예로 들었습니다. 그는 조그마한 “생명 발아체”인 수정된 노른자가 어떻게 매일 조금씩 자라 껍질 안에서 병아리가 되는지에 주목했습니다. 이처럼 예수님도 우리에게 오셔서 성령을 통해 우리와 함께 거하시며 우리를 변화시켜 주실 것입니다. 메이어 목사님은 “이제부터 그리스도께서 자라가고 커져가며 다른 모든 것을 자신 안에 흡수하시면서 여러분 안에서 형체를 이루어 가실 것입니다.”라고 말했습니다.

그러나 그리스도께서 성령으로 믿는 자 가운데 거하시는 놀라운 사실을 자기의 말로는 다 표현할 수 없음을 잘 알았던 그는 예수님의 내주하심에 관한 자신의 설명은 완전한 게 아니라고 이해를 구했습니다. 하지만 그는 말로 완벽히 표현할 수 없다 해도 예수님이 하신 다음 말씀의 의미를 사람들에게 전하라고 당부했습니다. “그 날에는 내가 아버지 안에 너희가 내 안에 내가 너희 안에 있는 것을 너희가 알리라”(요한복음 14:20). 이것은 예수님이 제자들과 최후의 만찬을 나누시던 밤에 하셨던 말씀입니다. 주님은 하나님과 함께 오셔서 그분께 순종하는 이들과 거처를 함께 하실 것임을 제자들이 알기를 원하셨습니다(23절). 그것이 가능한 이유는 예수님이 성령을 통해 그를 믿는 자들 안에 내주하시기 때문입니다. 예수님은 그렇게 믿는 자들을 내부로부터 변화시켜 주십니다.

THE INDWELLING CHRIST

English preacher F. B. Meyer (1847–1929) used the example of an egg to illustrate what he called “the deep philosophy of the indwelling Christ.” He noted how the fertilized yolk is a little “life germ” that grows more and more each day until the chick is formed in the shell. So too will Jesus come to live with us through His Holy Spirit, changing us. Meyer said, “From now on Christ is going to grow and increase and absorb into Himself everything else, and be formed in you.”

He apologized for stating the truths of Jesus imperfectly, knowing that his words couldn’t fully convey the wonderful reality of Christ dwelling in believers through the Holy Spirit. But he urged his listeners to share with others, however imperfectly, what Jesus meant when He said, “On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you” (JOHN 14:20). Jesus said these words on the night of His last supper with His friends. He wanted them to know that He and His Father would come and make their home with those who obey Him (V. 23). This is possible because through the Spirit Jesus dwells in those who believe in Him, changing them from the inside out.

No matter how you picture it, we have Christ living inside us, guiding us and helping us to grow to be more like Him.

살아 있다는 신호

내 딸은 애완용 게 두 마리를 선물 받고 큰 유리상자에 모래를 넣어주어 게들이 오르기도 하고 구멍도 팔 수 있게 해 주었습니다. 게들이 즐겁게 먹도록 물과 단백질, 그리고 야채 부스러기도 주었습니다. 이렇게 잘 지내는 것 같던 게들이 어느 날 사라져 무척 놀랐습니다. 우리는 온 사방을 다 찾아보았습니다. 그러다가 마침내 게들이 아마도 모래 아래 있으면서 약 두 달에 걸쳐 껍질 갈이를 할 거라는 것을 알게 되었습니다.

두 달이 지나고 한 달이 더 흐르며 게들이 죽지 않았나 걱정되기 시작했습니다. 기다리면서 초조함은 더해갔습니다. 드디어 우리는 살아 있다는 신호를 포착했고, 이어서 게들은 모래 위로 모습을 드러냈습니다.

이스라엘 백성들이 바벨론에 끌려가 살았을 때 하나님의 예언이 과연 이루어질지 의심이 들지 않았을까요? 낙심하여 거기서 영원히 살게 될까 걱정하지 않았을까요? 그러나 하나님은 예레미야 선지자를 통해 이미 말씀하셨습니다 “바벨론에서 칠십 년이 차면 내가 너희를 돌보고 나의 선한 말을 너희에게 성취하여 너희를 이곳[예루살렘]으로 돌아오게 하리라” (예레미야 29:10). 말씀하신 그대로 70년이 지나서 하나님은 바사왕 고레스를 통하여 유대인들의 예루살렘 귀환과 성전 복구를 허락하셨습니다(에스라 1:1-4).

아무런 변화의 조짐도 없이 그냥 기다려야 하는 시간에도 하나님은 우리를 잊지 않으십니다. 성령님이 우리를 도와 참을성을 키우실 때, 우리는 하나님이 소망을 주시는 분, 약속을 지키시는 분, 미래를 주관하시는 분인 것을 알게 됩니다.

SIGNS OF LIFE

When my daughter received a pair of pet crabs as a gift, she filled a glass tank with sand so the creatures could climb and dig. She supplied water, protein, and vegetable scraps for their dining pleasure. They seemed happy, so it was shocking when they disappeared one day. We searched everywhere. Finally, we learned they were likely under the sand, and would be there for about two months as they shed their exoskeletons.

Two months passed, and then another month elapsed, and I had begun to worry that they’d died. The longer we waited, the more impatient I became. Then, finally, we saw signs of life, and the crabs emerged from the sand.

I wonder if Israel doubted that God’s prophecy for them would be fulfilled when they lived as exiles in Babylon. Did they feel despair? Did they worry they’d be there forever? Through Jeremiah, God had said, “I will come to you and fulfill my good promise to bring you back to [Jerusalem]” (JEREMIAH 29:10). Sure enough, seventy years later, God caused the Persian king Cyrus to allow the Jews to return and rebuild their temple in Jerusalem (EZRA 1:1–4).

In seasons of waiting when it seems like nothing is happening, God hasn’t forgotten us. As the Holy Spirit helps us to develop patience, we can know that He’s the Hope-Giver, the Promise- Keeper, and the One who controls the future.
