진정한 마음의 집

“기적의 개 바비”는 2,200 마일 떨어진 곳에서의 여름휴가 중 가족과 헤어지게 되었던 콜리 종의 개입니다. 가족들은 사랑하는 반려견을 찾아 사방을 헤맸지만 찾지 못하고 슬픈 마음으로 돌아와야 했습니다.

6개월이 지나 겨울이 끝나갈 무렵, 오리건주 실버톤의 집 문 앞에 바비가 덥수룩하지만 단호한 모습으로 나타났습니다. 바비는 강과 사막과 눈 덮인 산들을 넘어 길고도 험한 여정을 마치고 사랑하는 가족에게 돌아왔습니다.

바비의 이야기는 책과 영화로 만들어지고 마을의 벽화에도 그려졌습니다. 아마도 하나님께서 우리 속에 이보다 더 깊은 어떤 사모하는 마음을 심어 주셨기 때문인지, 바비의 헌신의 모습은 우리의 심금을 울립니다. 고대 신학자 어거스틴은 그것을 이렇게 표현했습니다. “주님은 당신을 위해 우리를 만드셨습니다. 우리 마음은 당신 안에서 안식할 때까지 쉼을 얻지 못합니다.” 이와 같이 갈망하는 마음은 다윗이 유다 광야에서 추격자들을 피해 숨어 절망 가운데 드린 간절한 기도에도 나타납니다. “하나님이여 주는 나의 하나님이시라 내가 간절히 주를 찾되 물이 없어 마르고 황폐한 땅에서 내 영혼이 주를 갈망하며 내 육체가 주를 앙모하나이다”(시편 63:1).

다윗은 주님의 “인자하심이 생명보다 나으므로”(3절) 하나님을 찬양 했습니다. 하나님을 아는 것과 비길 것은 없습니다! 하나님은 예수님을 통해 우리를 찾으시고, 우리가 전에 얼마나 멀리 있었는지 상관없이 주님의 완벽한 사랑이 있는 집으로 돌아올 수 있는 길을 열어주셨습니다. 하나님께 돌아오면 거기에 우리 마음의 참된 집이 있습니다.

OUR HEART’S TRUE HOME

“Bobbie the Wonder Dog” was a collie mix separated from his family while they were on a summer vacation together more than 2,200 miles from home. The family searched everywhere for their beloved pet but returned heartbroken without him.

Six months later, toward the end of winter, a scraggly but determined Bobbie showed up at their door in Silverton, Oregon. Bobbie somehow made the long and dangerous trek, crossing rivers, desert, and snow-covered mountains to find his way home to those he loved.

Bobbie’s quest inspired books, movies, and a mural in his hometown. His devotion strikes a chord within, perhaps because God has placed an even deeper longing in our hearts. Ancient theologian Augustine described it this way: “You have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.” This same longing was desperately yet eloquently expressed by David in a prayer as he hid from his pursuers in Judah’s wilderness: “You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water” (PSALM 63:1).

David praised God because His “love is better than life” (V. 3). Nothing compares with knowing Him! Through Jesus, God has sought us out and made the way for us to come home to His perfect love—regardless of how distant we once were. As we turn to Him, we find our heart’s true home.

거울 테스트

“거울 안에 누가 있나요?” 자기 인식 테스트를 진행하는 심리학자들이 아이들에게 물었습니다. 18개월이 안된 아이들은 대개 거울 속 모습이 자기라는 걸 모릅니다. 그러나 자라면서 아이들은 그것이 자신의 모습이라는 것을 알게 됩니다. 자기 인식은 건강한 성장과 성숙의 중요한 척도입니다.

이것은 예수님을 믿는 신자들의 성장에 있어서도 중요합니다. 야고보는 거울 인식 테스트의 개념을 설명해줍니다. 거울은 하나님께서 주신 “진리의 말씀”입니다(야고보서 1:18). 우리가 성경을 읽을 때 무엇을 보게 되나요? 사랑과 겸손을 설명하는 성경에서 우리는 자신을 보게 되나요? 하나님이 명령하신 것을 읽을 때 우리 자신의 행실을 돌아보게 되나요? 우리가 자신의 마음과 행실을 돌아볼 때, 성경은 그 행실이 하나님의 뜻에 맞는지, 아니면 회개하고 달라져야 하는지를 알게 해줍니다.

야고보는 우리에게 성경을 읽기만 하고 돌아서서 잊어버려 “자신을 속이는 자”(22절)가 되지 말라고 경고합니다. 성경은 하나님의 계획대로 지혜롭게 살 수 있게 해주는 지도책입니다. 우리가 성경을 읽고 묵상하고 깊이 이해할 때, 우리의 마음을 들여다볼 수 있는 눈과 달라질 수 있는 힘을 달라고 주님께 간구하십시오.

MIRROR TEST

“Who’s in the mirror?” the psychologists conducting the self-recognition test asked children. At eighteen months or younger, children don’t usually associate themselves with the image in the mirror. But as kids grow, they can understand they’re looking at themselves. Self-recognition is an important mark of healthy growth and maturation.

It’s also important to the growth of believers in Jesus. James outlines a mirror recognition test. The mirror is “the word of truth” from God (JAMES 1:18). When we read the Scriptures, what do we see? Do we recognize ourselves when they describe love and humility? Do we see our own actions when we read what God commands us to do? When we look into our hearts and test our actions, Scripture can help us recognize if our actions are in line with what God desires for us or if we need to seek repentance and make a change.

James cautions us not to just read Scripture and turn away “and so deceive [ourselves]” (V. 22), forgetting what we’ve taken in. The Bible provides us with the map to live wisely according to God’s plans. As we read it, meditate on it, and digest it, we can ask Him to give us the eyes to see into our heart and the strength to make necessary changes.

하나님의 온유한 은혜

시인 에밀리 디킨슨은 “모든 진실을 말하되 다른 말로 적절히 바꾸어 전하라”고 썼습니다. 하나님의 진리와 영광은 “너무나 눈부셔”서 연약한 인간이 한 번에 다 이해하고 받아들일 수 없기 때문에, 하나님의
은혜와 진리를 듣고 전할 때에는 온유하고 완곡하게 “적절한 말로 바꾸어” 하는 것이 가장 좋다고 했습니다. 왜냐하면 “진리의 강한 빛을 갑자기 받으면 누구나 눈이 멀게 되기 때문”입니다.

바울 사도가 에베소서 4장에서 성도들에게 “모든 겸손과 온유로 하고 오래 참음으로 사랑 가운데서 서로 용납하라”(2절)고 권면한 것도 이와 같은 취지였습니다. 바울은 믿는 자들이 온유와 은혜로 서로를 대하는 것은 예수님께서 우리를 은혜로 대하셨기 때문이라고 설명했습니다. 예수님은 이 땅에 오셔서(9-10절) 사람들이 그를 믿고 영접할 수 있도록 조용하고 온유하게 자신을 나타내셨습니다.

그리고 예수님은 지금도 그런 온유한 사랑으로 다가와 그의 백성이 계속 성장하고 성숙하는데 필요한 은사와 능력을 주십니다. “이는 성도를 온전하게 하여 봉사의 일을 하게 하며 그리스도의 몸을 세우려 하심이라 우리가 다 하나님의 아들을 믿는 것과 아는 일에 하나가 되어 온전한 사람을 이루어 그리스도의 장성한 분량이 충만한 데까지 이르”(12-13절)게 하기 위함입니다. 우리는 성장해 가면서 예수님 외의 다른 곳에서 희망을 찾는 연약함 대신(14절) 더 확신을 가지고 예수님의 온유한 사랑의 본보기를 따르게 됩니다(15-16절).

GOD’S GENTLE GRACE

“Tell all the truth but tell it slant,” the poet Emily Dickinson wrote, suggesting that, because God’s truth and glory is far “too bright” for vulnerable human beings to understand or receive all at once, it’s best for us to receive and share God’s grace and truth in “slant”—gentle, indirect—ways. For “the Truth must dazzle gradually / Or every man be blind.”

The apostle Paul made a similar argument in Ephesians 4 when he urged believers to be “completely humble and gentle” and to “be patient, bearing with one another in love” (V. 2). The foundation for believers’ gentleness and grace with each other, Paul explained, is Christ’s gracious ways with us. In His incarnation (VV. 9–10), Jesus revealed Himself in the quiet, gentle ways people needed in order to trust and receive Him.

And He continues to reveal Himself in such gentle, loving ways— gifting and empowering His people in just the ways they need to continue to grow and mature—“so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature” (VV. 12–13). As we grow, we become less vulnerable to looking elsewhere for hope (V. 14) and more confident in following Jesus’ example of gentle love (VV. 15–16).

열매를 보라

“진짜 주인공[사람 이름], 일어나 주세요.” 이 말은 ‘진실을 말하다’ 라는 쇼 프로그램의 끝에 가서 늘 듣는 대사입니다. 네 명의 연예인 패널이 각자 자기가 진짜 주인공이라고 주장하는 세 명의 출연자에게 질문을 합니다. 물론 둘은 가짜이고 실제 인물을 가려내는 것은 패널의 몫입니다. 한 에피소드에서는 패널이 “루돌프 사슴 코”의 작사가인 “진짜 죠니 마크스”를 찾아내야 했습니다. 연예인 패널은 아무리 좋은 질문을 해도 누가 누군지 맞추는 것이 얼마나 어려운지를 알게 되었습니다. 가짜 출연자들은 속임수로 진실을 꾸며 대어 TV 쇼를 재미있게 했습니다.

재미로 보는 TV 게임과는 완전히 다른 이야기이지만, “거짓 선지자들” 을 가려내는 것도 이처럼 어려운 일이고, 중요함에서는 비교도 되지 않습니다. “사나운 늑대”는 흔히 “양의 옷”을 입고 우리에게 다가옵니다. 예수님은 아무리 지혜 있는 사람이라도 이들을 “조심하라”고 주의를 주십니다(마태복음 7:15). 바르게 분별하려면 좋은 질문보다는 정확한 눈이 더 필요합니다. 그들의 열매를 보십시오. 그 열매로 가짜를 구분하게 될 것입니다(16-20절).

성경 말씀의 도움으로 좋은 열매와 나쁜 열매를 알아낼 수 있습니다. 좋은 열매는 “사랑과 희락과 화평과 오래 참음과 자비와 양선과 충성과 온유와 절제”(갈라디아서 5:22-23)입니다. 늑대는 속임수를 쓰기 때문에 자세히 보아야 합니다. 성령으로 충만한 우리 믿는 사람들은 “은혜와 진리가 충만한”(요한복음 1:14) 진정 선한 목자를 섬깁니다.

LOOK AT THE FRUIT

“Will the real [person’s name] please stand up?” That’s the familiar line at the end of the game show To Tell the Truth. A panel of four celebrities asks questions of three individuals claiming to be the same person. Of course, two are impostors, but it’s up to the panel to discern the actual person. In one episode, the celebrities tried to guess “the real Johnny Marks,” who wrote the lyrics to “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” The celebrities found out how difficult it was to figure out who’s who, even when asking good questions. Impostors finagled the truth, which made for entertaining television.

Discerning who’s who when it comes to “false teachers” is a far cry from television game show antics, but it can be equally as challenging and is infinitely more important. The “ferocious wolves” often come to us in “sheep’s clothing,” and Jesus warns even the wise among us to “watch out” (MATTHEW 7:15). The best test is not so much good questions, but good eyes. Look at their fruit, for that’s how you’ll recognize them (VV. 16–20).

Scripture gives us assistance in seeing good and bad fruit. The good looks like “love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” (GALATIANS 5:22–23). We’ve got to pay close attention, for wolves play by deception. But as believers, who are filled with the Spirit, we serve the real Good Shepherd, “full of grace and truth” (JOHN 1:14).

우리가 돌아가 의지할 곳

고등학교 시절 잭은 여유로운 태도와 운동 실력으로 모두의 부러움을 샀습니다. 한 손으로 스케이트보드를 잡고 다른 한 손은 균형을 잡기 위해 쭉 뻗은 채 하프파이프 (스케이트보드용 U형 구조물 : 역자 주) 위 공중으로 날아오른 잭은 가장 행복해 보였습니다.

동네에 있는 교회에 다니면서 그는 예수님을 따르기로 결심했습니다. 그렇게 결심할 때까지 잭은 심각한 가족 문제로 힘들어했고 그 아픔을 잊고자 약물을 복용한 적도 있습니다. 예수를 믿고 한동안은 모든 일이 잘 되어가는 것 같았습니다. 그러나 몇 년 후 다시 약물을 사용하기 시작했습니다. 적절한 도움과 지속적인 치료도 못 받은 채 그는 결국 약물 과다 복용으로 사망하고 말았습니다.

우리는 어려움이 닥칠 때 자기가 친숙한 쪽에 의지하기 쉽습니다. 이스라엘 민족은 닥쳐올 앗수르의 공격을 두려워하고 있을 때 그들의 노예 시절 주인이던 애굽 사람들에게 도움을 청했습니다(이사야 30:1–5). 하나님은 그들이 이 일로 곤욕을 치르게 될 것이라고 예상하셨지만, 잘못된 선택에도 불구하고 계속해서 이스라엘 백성들을 보살펴 주셨습니다. 이사야는 하나님의 마음을 이렇게 전합니다 “여호와께서 기다리시나니 이는 너희에게 은혜를 베풀려 하심이요 일어나시리니 이는 너희를 긍휼히 여기려 하심이라”(18절).

이것이 하나님의 성품이십니다. 우리가 고통을 피하고자 다른 곳을 찾아 헤맬 때에도 하나님은 우리를 기다리시는 분입니다. 하나님은 우리를 돕고자 하십니다. 우리가 중독적인 습관으로 상처 입는 것을 원치 않으십니다. 어떤 물질이나 행동을 통해 순간의 안식을 맛볼 수도 있겠지만, 하나님께서는 우리가 그분과 가까이 동행할 때 진정한 치유를 베풀기를 원하십니다.

WHERE TO TURN

Everyone in high school admired Jack’s easygoing attitude and athletic skill. He was happiest in midair above a half-pipe ramp—one hand holding his skateboard, the other stretched out for balance.

Jack decided to follow Jesus after he started attending a local church. Up to that point, he’d endured significant family struggles and had used drugs to medicate his pain. For a while after his conversion, things seemed to be going well for him. But years later he started using drugs again. Without the proper intervention and ongoing treatment, he eventually died of an overdose.

It’s easy to turn back to what’s familiar when we face difficulty. When the Israelites felt the distress of an upcoming Assyrian attack, they crawled back to the Egyptians—their former slave masters—for help (ISAIAH 30:1–5). God predicted that this would be disastrous, but He continued to care for them although they made the wrong choice. Isaiah voiced God’s heart: “The Lord longs to be gracious to you; therefore he will rise up to show you compassion” (V. 18).

This is God’s attitude toward us, even when we choose to look elsewhere to numb our pain. He wants to help us. He doesn’t want us to hurt ourselves with habits that create bondage. Certain substances and actions tempt us with a quick sense of relief, but God wants to provide authentic healing as we walk closely with Him. - JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

커피콩 담았던 그릇

나는 커피를 마시지 않지만, 커피콩의 향을 맡으면 위로와 애틋함을 동시에 느끼곤 합니다. 딸 멜리사가 10대였을 때 자신의 방을 따뜻하고 기분 좋은 냄새가 스며들도록 커피콩을 그릇에 가득 담아두어 자신만의 독특한 향이 나는 침실로 꾸몄습니다.

멜리사가 17세에 차 사고로 이 땅에서의 삶을 마감한 후로 거의 20년이 지났지만, 우리는 아직도 멜리사의 커피콩 담았던 그릇을 가지고 있습니다. 그것은 우리와 함께 했던 멜리사의 생을 지속적으로 향기롭게 기억하게 해 줍니다.

성경도 향기를 암시의 상징으로 사용합니다. 아가서에서 향기를 남녀 간 사랑의 상징이라고 말합니다(1:3; 4:11,16 참조). 호세아서는 하나님께서 이스라엘을 용서하시는 것을 “그의 향기는 레바논 백향목 같으리니”라고 말합니다(호세아 14:6). 마리아가 예수님의 발에 향유를 부어 형제자매의 집을 향유 냄새로 가득히 채웠던(요한복음 12:3) 일은 예수님의 죽음을 미리 암시했습니다(7절 참조).

향기라는 말은 주변 사람들에게 우리의 신앙 간증이 생각나도록 하는 데 도움이 됩니다. 바울은 이것을 “우리는 구원받는 자들에게나 망하는 자들에게나 하나님 앞에서 그리스도의 향기니”라고 설명했습니다(고린도후서 2:15).

커피콩 향기가 내게 멜리사를 떠오르게 하듯, 우리의 삶이 예수의 향기를 퍼뜨려 다른 사람들도 자신들이 예수님을 필요로 한다는 것을 깨닫게 되기를 기원합니다.

THE COFFEE-BEAN BOWL

I’m not a coffee drinker, but one sniff of coffee beans brings me a moment of both solace and wistfulness. When our teenage daughter Melissa was making her bedroom uniquely hers, she filled a bowl with coffee beans to permeate her room with a warm, pleasant scent.

It’s been nearly two decades since Melissa’s earthly life ended in a car accident at age seventeen, but we still have that coffeebean bowl. It gives us a continual, aromatic remembrance of Mell’s life with us.

Scripture also uses fragrances as a reminder. Song of Songs refers to fragrances as a symbol of love between a man and a woman (SEE 1:3; 4:11, 16). In Hosea, God’s forgiveness of Israel is said to be “fragrance like a cedar of Lebanon” (HOSEA 14:6). And Mary’s anointing of Jesus’ feet, which caused the house of Mary and her siblings to be “filled with the fragrance of the perfume” (JOHN 12:3), pointed ahead to Jesus’ death (SEE V. 7).

The idea of fragrance can also help us be mindful of our testimony of faith to those around us. Paul explained it this way: “We are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing” (2 CORINTHIANS 2:15).

Just as the scent of coffee beans reminds me of Melissa, may our lives produce a scent of Jesus and His love that reminds others of their need of Him. - DAVE BRANON

마음에서 나오는 것들

“노아의 방주 작전”이라는 이름의 구조 작전은 동물 애호가들에게는 재미있게 들릴지 모르지만 나쏘 동물 학대 방지 협회에게는 악몽 이었습니다. 어떤 집에서 나는 소음과 지독한 악취에 대한 민원을 접수 받고, 인부들은 롱아일랜드의 한 집에 들어가 방치되어 있던 400여 마리의 동물들을 발견해 데리고 나왔습니다.

우리가 더러운 환경에서 수백 마리의 동물을 방치하고 있지는 않겠지만, 예수님께서는 우리가 마음에 품고 있을지 모르는 악하고 나쁜 생각과 행동은 드러내어 제거할 필요가 있다고 말씀하셨습니다.

예수님이 제자들에게 무엇이 사람을 깨끗하게 하고 더럽게 하는지 가르치실 때, 사람을 더럽게 하는 것은 더러운 손이나 “입에 들어가는 모든 것”이 아니라 악한 마음이라고 말씀하셨습니다(마태복음 15:17-19). 우리 마음의 악취는 결국 우리 삶에서 배어 나올 것입니다. 그리고 예수님은 “마음에서”(19 절) 나오는 악한 생각과 행동들을 예를 들어 말씀하셨습니다. 아무리 많은 형식적인 종교 활동과 예식으로도 그 악한 생각과 행동들을 깨끗하게 만들 수 없습니다. 우리의 마음을 변화시키기 위해서는 하나님이 필요합니다.

우리는 예수님의 내면을 뒤집는 가르침을 실천하기 위해 그분께 우리 마음의 추한 모습을 보여주어서 그 악취를 일으키는 원인을 제거하시게 해야 합니다. 그리스도께서 우리 마음에서 나오는 것들을 드러내실 때 그분은 우리의 말과 행동이 예수님을 닮을 수 있도록 도우실 것이며 그로 말미암아 풍기는 우리 삶의 향기는 그분을 기쁘게 할 것입니다.

OUT OF THE HEART

A rescue mission nicknamed “Operation Noah’s Ark” might sound fun for animal lovers, but it was a nightmare for the Nassau Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. After receiving complaints about the noise and the horrid stench coming from a certain house, workers entered the Long Island home and found (and later removed) more than four hundred animals from their neglected conditions.

We may not be holding hundreds of animals in filthy conditions, but Jesus said we might be harboring evil and sinful thoughts and actions in our hearts that need to be exposed and removed.

In teaching His disciples about what makes a person clean and unclean, Jesus said it isn’t dirty hands or “whatever enters the mouth” that defiles a person, but an evil heart (MATTHEW 15:17–19). The stench from our hearts will eventually leak out from our lives. Then Jesus gave examples of evil thoughts and actions that come “out of the heart” (V. 19). No amount of external religious activities and rituals can make them clean. We need God to transform our hearts.

We can practice Jesus’ inside-out ethic by giving Him access to the squalor of our hearts and letting Him remove what’s causing the stench. As Christ uncovers what’s coming from our hearts, He’ll help our words and actions be aligned with His desires, and the aroma from our lives will please Him. - MARVIN WILLIAMS

우리의 미래를 위한 하나님의 도움

GOD’S HELP FOR OUR FUTURE

According to psychologist Meg Jay, our minds tend to think about our future selves similarly to how we think about complete strangers. Why? It’s probably due to what’s sometimes called the “empathy gap.” It can be hard to empathize and care for people we don’t know personally—even future versions of ourselves. So in her work, Jay tries to help young people imagine their future selves and take steps to care for them. This includes working out actionable plans for who they will one day be—paving the way for them to pursue their dreams and to continue to thrive.

In Psalm 90, we’re invited to see our lives not just in the present, but as a whole—to ask God to help us “number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (V. 12). Remembering that our time on earth is limited can remind us of our desperate need to rely on God. We need His help to learn how to find satisfaction and joy—not just now, but “all our days” (V. 14). We need His help to learn to think not just of ourselves, but of future generations (V. 16). And we need His help to serve Him with the time we’ve been given—as He establishes the work of our hands and hearts (V. 17). - MONICA LA ROSE

기적 같은 구원

예수님을 따르는 친구였던 나사로가 죽었을 때 많은 사람들이 예수님께서 너무 늦게 도착하셨다고 생각했습니다(요한복음 11:32). 나사로는 예수님이 도착하시기 전에 이미 죽어서 나흘 동안이나 무덤 안에 있었습니다. 하지만 예수님께서는 죽은 나사로를 살리심으로 그 비통한 시간을 기적으로 바꾸셨습니다(38절). “네가 믿으면 하나님의 영광을

THE MIRACLE OF SALVATION

Blogger Kevin Lynn’s life seemed to be falling apart. In a recent article he recounted, “I actually put a gun to my head . . . . It took for God to supernaturally step into my room and my life. And at that moment, I really found what I know is God now.” God intervened and prevented Lynn from taking his life. He filled him with conviction and gave him an overwhelming reminder of His loving presence. Instead of hiding this powerful encounter, Lynn shared his experience with the world, creating a YouTube ministry where he shares his own transformation story as well as the stories of others.

When Jesus’ follower and friend Lazarus died, many assumed that Jesus was too late (JOHN 11:32). Lazarus had been in his tomb for four days before Christ arrived, but He turned this moment of anguish into a miracle when He raised him from the dead (V. 38). “Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?” (V. 40).

Just as Jesus raised Lazarus from death to life, He offers us new life through Him. By sacrificing His life on the cross, Christ paid the penalty for our sins and offers us forgiveness when we accept His gift of grace. We’re freed from the bondage of our sins, renewed by His everlasting love, and given the opportunity to change the course of our lives. - KIMYA LODER

우리 모두는 종종 어려운 결정을 내려야 할 때가 있습니다. 어떤 결정을 내리면 다른 것을 포기해야 하기 때문에, 우리는 인생에서 가장 중요한 우선순위를 정해야 합니다. 예수님은 우리 삶에서 가장 중요한 결정 ‘예수를 따르라’는 진리를 제자들과 모인 군중들에게 전하고자 하셨습니다. 제자가 되기 위해서는 “자신을 부인해야” 예수님과 함께 걸을 수 있다(마가복음 8:34) 고 하셨습니다. 제자들은 예수님을 따르는 데 필요한 희생을 피하고 싶은 유혹에 흔들려 자신들의 욕망을 추구할 수도 있었습니다. 하지만 예수님은 잘못된 선택을 할 경우 훨씬 더 값진 것을 잃을 수 있다고 상기시켜 주셨습니다.

우리는 때로 대단한 가치가 있어 보이는 것들을 쫓아 유혹에 빠져 예수님을 따르는 일을 소홀히 합니다. 매일 해야 하는 선택 속에서 현명한 선택을 함으로써 주님께 영광을 돌리도록 하나님께 간구합시다.

CHOOSE WISELY

Astronaut Chris Ferguson made a difficult decision as the commander of the flight crew scheduled for a journey to the International Space Station. But that decision didn’t have anything to do with the mechanics of flight or the safety of his fellow astronauts. Instead, it pertained to what he considers his most important work: his family. Ferguson opted to keep his feet planted firmly on Earth so he could be present for his daughter’s wedding.

We all face difficult decisions at times—decisions that cause us to evaluate what matters most to us in life, because one option comes at the expense of the other. Jesus aimed to communicate this truth to His disciples and a crowd of onlookers regarding life’s most important decision—to follow Him. To be a disciple, He said, would require them to “deny themselves” in order to walk with Him (MARK 8:34). They might have been tempted to spare themselves the sacrifices required of following Christ and instead seek their own desires, but He reminded them it would come at the price of that which matters much more.

We’re often tempted to pursue things that seem of great value, yet they distract us from following Jesus. Let’s ask God to guide us in the choices we face each day so we’ll choose wisely and honor Him. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG
