재발견

1970년 덴마크를 방문했던 어떤 자동차 회사 임원은 이 지역 주민 한 사람이 1939년형 뷰익 듀얼 카얼 피에튼 차종을 소유하고 있음을 알게 되었습니다. 그 차종은 실제로 생산되지 않았기 때문에 그 차는 희귀한, 그야말로 세상에 단 하나뿐인 차였습니다. 그 차를 발견하고 기쁨에 찬 임원은 그것을 구입해서 자신의 시간과 돈을 들여 수리했습니다. 현재, 이 유일무이한 차는 세계적으로 유명한 클래식 자동차 컬렉션의 주요 전시물입니다.

숨겨진 보물은 여러 형태로 발견되는데, 역대하는 잃어버린 보물을 찾은 또 다른 사건에 대해 기록하고 있습니다. 유다 왕 요시야의 재위 18년, 왕은 예루살렘에 있는 성전을 복구하기 시작했습니다. 그 과정에서 제사장 힐기야는 “여호와의 전에서 율법책”을 발견했습니다(역대하 34:15). 구약성경의 첫 다섯 권인 율법책을 침략자로부터 안전하게 보존하기 위해 수십 년 전 숨겨 놓았던 것 같습니다. 시간이 흘러 이 사실이 감쪽같이 잊혔던 것입니다.

요시야 왕은 이 이야기를 듣고 그 책 발견의 중요성을 깨달았습니다. 요시야는 온 백성을 불러 모아 율법책 전체를 읽고 율법책에 기록된 대로 모두 사람이 지킬 수 있도록 했습니다(30-31절).

우리는 오늘날 삶에서 여전히 중요한, 무한한 가치를 지닌 보물인 성경 66권을 모두 읽을 수 있는 놀라운 축복을 받았습니다.

REDISCOVERED

In 1970, a car executive visiting Denmark learned that a 1939 Buick Dual Cowl Phaeton was owned by a local resident. Since the car never actually went into production, it was a rare find— a one-of-kind vehicle. Delighted with the discovery, the executive bought the car and spent his time and money to have it restored. Currently, this unique car is featured in a world-renowned collection of classic vehicles.

Hidden treasures can take many forms, and in the book of 2 Chronicles we read about another discovery of a lost treasure. Eighteen years into his reign as king of Judah, Josiah began to repair the temple in Jerusalem. During the process, the priest Hilkiah found the “Book of the Law in the temple” (2 CHRONICLES 34:15). The Book of the Law, the first five books of the Old Testament, had likely been hidden away decades earlier to keep it safe from invading armies. Over time it had been simply forgotten.

When King Josiah was told about this discovery, he realized the importance of the find. Josiah called all the people together and read the entire Book of the Law so they could commit themselves to keep all that was written in it (VV. 30–31).

Still important for our lives today, we have the amazing blessing of access to all sixty-six books of the Bible, a treasure of infinite worth. - LISA M. SAMRA

사랑 안에 뿌리를 내림

나는 입주 간병인으로 어머니를 돕기 위해 암 치료 센터에 도착했습니다. 외롭고 두려웠습니다. 가족과 주위의 도움을 떠나 750마일 이상 떨어진 곳에 온 것입니다. 내가 짐을 챙기기도 전에 미소의 사나이 프랭크가 도와주겠다고 했습니다. 우리가 6층에 도착할 즈음에는, 프랭크의 치료를 돕고 있는 그의 아내 로리와 만나기로 했습니다. 이들 부부와 나는 하나님과 서로를 의지하며 곧 가족처럼 되었습니다. 우리는 함께 웃다가, 화도 내고, 울면서 기도했습니다. 어쩌다 못 올 데 온 기분이 들었지만 하나님과 연결된 우리의 관계는 서로 의지하며 사랑 안에서 깊게 뿌리내렸습니다.

삶의 여러 환경들은 우리의 익숙한 환경을 훨씬 넘어 전혀 예기치 못한 곳으로 우리를 인도하기도 합니다. 그러나 우리가 하나님과, 또 서로서로와의 관계를 유지한다면, 하나님은 우리가 서로 의지하면서 사랑 안에 뿌리를 내리게 하실 것입니다.

ROOTED IN LOVE

I arrived at the cancer care center, where I’d be serving as my mom’s live-in caregiver, feeling alone and afraid. I’d left my family and support system more than 750 miles behind me. But before I could even touch my luggage, Frank, a man with a huge grin, offered to help. By the time we reached the sixth floor, I’d made plans to meet his wife, Lori, who cared for him during his treatments. The couple soon became like family as we leaned on God and each other. We laughed, vented, cried, and prayed together. Though we all felt displaced, our connection to God and each other kept us rooted in love as we supported one another.

When Ruth committed to caring for her mother-in-law, Naomi, she left the security of familiarity behind. Ruth “entered a field and began to glean behind the harvesters” (RUTH 2:3). The overseer told the landowner, Boaz, that Ruth “came into the field” and “remained” working “except for a short rest in the shelter” (V. 7). Ruth found a safe place with people willing to care for her as she cared for Naomi (VV. 8–9). And God provided for Ruth and Naomi though Boaz’s generosity (VV. 14–16).

Life’s circumstances can provide roads to unexpected places far beyond our comfort zones. As we remain connected to God and each other, He’ll keep us rooted in love as we support one another. - XOCHITL DIXON

촛불 켜기

정오였지만 해는 보이지 않았습니다. 1780년 5월 19일 아침 뉴잉글랜드에 암흑이 시작되어 몇 시간 동안 지속되었습니다. 이 아주 이상한 어두움은 캐나다의 대규모 산불로 생긴 짙은 연기구름 때문에 그런 것 같았지만, 많은 사람들은 최후 심판의 날이 온 것은 아닐까 생각했습니다.

밤이든 낮이든 우리의 구세주를 섬기는 것은 항상 좋은 일입니다. 어두움이 밀어닥쳐도 주님을 기다리는 모든 사람에게 하신 주님의 약속은 지켜질 것입니다. 어둠 속의 촛불처럼 우리의 “빛이 사람 앞에 비치게 하여 그들로 보게”(마태복음 5:16) 하며 주님을 사랑하고 섬기게 하소서.

LIGHTING CANDLES

It was noon, but the sun wasn’t visible. New England’s Dark Day began the morning of May 19, 1780, and lasted for hours. The cause of the surreal darkness was likely heavy clouds of smoke from massive wildfires in Canada, but many wondered if it might be judgment day.

The Connecticut governor’s council (senate) was in session, and when some considered adjourning because of the darkness, Abraham Davenport responded, “I am against adjournment. The day of judgment is either approaching, or it is not. If it is not, there is no cause for an adjournment; if it is, I choose to be found doing my duty. I wish therefore that candles may be brought.”

Davenport’s desire to be found faithfully performing the work God had given him to do on the day He returns is illustrative of Jesus’ words: “Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him. It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes” (LUKE 12:35–37).

Day or night, it’s always good to serve our Savior. Even when darkness encroaches, His promises for all who look forward to Him will stand. Like candles in the darkness, may our “light shine before others, that they may see” (MATTHEW 5:16) and love and serve Him too.

우리가 함께 모일 때

세계 행복보고서에 따르면 덴마크는 가장 행복한 국가 중 하나입니다. 덴마크 사람들은 친구들과 함께 모여서 따뜻한 음료와 풍성한 음식을 나누며 길고 어두운 겨울을 견딥니다. 그런 자리에서 느끼는 감정을 표현하는 단어가 ‘후가’입니다. 그들보다 더 남쪽에 사는 사람들만큼 누릴 수 없는 부족한 햇볕을 후가가 대신해 줍니다. 사랑하는 사람들과 함께 소박한 식탁에 둘러앉는 것만으로도 그들의 마음은 푸근해지니까요.

히브리서 기자는 신도들에게 공동체를 이루어 함께 모이라고 권면합니다. 그리스도를 따르는 사람들이 믿음 안에서 인내해야 하는, 겨울 날씨보다 훨씬 더 심각하고 힘든 날들이 있을 것을 알았기 때문입니다. 우리가 구세주를 믿으면 하나님께서 우리를 받아주신다고 예수님이 확실히 말씀해주셨지만, 수치심이나 의심이 들거나 실제로 어떤 반대에 부딪치면 그것들과 싸워야 할지 모릅니다. 그러나 우리가 함께 모인다면 서로 격려할 수 있는 특권을 갖습니다. 우리가 서로 동반자라면 “서로 돌아보아 사랑과 선행을 격려하며”(히브리서 10:24) 믿음을 굳게 세울 수 있습니다.

물론 친구들과 함께 한다고 해서 “행복보고서”의 순위가 올라간다는 보장은 없습니다. 다만 이것은 생활 속에 흔히 겪는 좌절감을 믿음으로 견디게 해주는 성경이 알려주는 방법입니다. 이것은 우리가 교회라는 공동체를 추구하는 아주 훌륭한 이유입니다! 혹은, 서로의 마음을 풍성하게 하기 위해 덴마크 사람들처럼 그저 소박하게 각자의 집을 개방하는 이유이기도 합니다.

WHEN WE GATHER TOGETHER

Denmark is among the happiest countries in the world, according to the World Happiness Report. The Danes weather their lengthy, dark winters by gathering with friends to share a warm drink or a gracious meal. The word they use for the feelings associated with those moments is hygge (hoo-gah). Hygge helps them offset the impact of enjoying less sunlight than their counterparts at lower latitudes. By circling around a simple table with loved ones, their hearts are nourished.

The writer of Hebrews encourages gathering together as a community. He acknowledges that there will be difficult days—with challenges far more significant than the weather—requiring those who follow Christ to persevere in faith. Though Jesus has made certain our acceptance by God through our faith in the Savior, we may struggle against shame or doubt or real opposition. By gathering together, we have the privilege of encouraging one another. When we’re sharing company, we’re able to “spur one another on toward love and good deeds,” which bolsters our faith (HEBREWS 10:24).

Gathering with friends doesn’t assure us of a ranking on a “happiness report.” It is, however, something the Bible offers as a means to bear us up in faith under the common frustrations of life. What a wonderful reason to seek out the community of a church! Or to open our homes—with an attitude of Danish simplicity—to nourish one another’s hearts. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

아는 것이 상처가 될 때

잭 엘더와 그의 친구들이 그랜드 캐니언을 관통하는 25일간의 래프팅을 마치고 뭍으로 올라오자 그들이 탔던 보트를 회수하러 온 남자가 코로나바이러스에 대해 이야기해주었습니다. 그들은 그가 농담한다고 생각했지만 협곡을 벗어나자 그들의 휴대폰에서 부모님들이 보내온 긴급 메시지가 떴습니다. 잭과 친구들은 충격에 빠져 다시 강으로 돌아가 지금 알게 된 현실에서 벗어나고 싶었습니다.

타락한 이 세상에서는 아는 것이 고통을 가져다 줄 때가 많습니다. 전도서의 현자는 “지혜가 많으면 번뇌도 많으니 지식을 더하는 자는 근심을 더하느니라”(1:18)라고 하였습니다. 어린아이가 알지 못하기 때문에 누리는 행복을 부러워해보지 않은 어른이 있을까요? 아이는 인종차별과 폭력, 암을 아직 모릅니다. 우리는 성인이 되어 우리의 약점과 악함을 알기 전에, 그리고 삼촌은 왜 그렇게 술을 많이 마시는지, 부모님이 왜 이혼했는지 등과 같은 가족의 비밀을 몰랐을 때에 더 행복하지 않았던가요?

아는 것에서 오는 고통은 원한다고 피할 수 없습니다. 일단 알게 되면 모른 척해도 소용없습니다. 그러나 우리를 인내하게 하고 나아가 더 좋아지게 하는 차원 높은 앎이 있습니다. 그것은 예수님은 하나님의 말씀이시고 우리의 어둠을 비치는 빛이시라는(요한복음 1:1-5) 것입니다. 예수님은 “하나님으로부터 나와서 우리에게 지혜와 의로움과 거룩함과 구원함이 되셨습니다”(고린도전서 1:30). 당신이 고통을 느낀다면 예수님께로 달려가십시오. 예수님은 당신을 아시고 돌보아 주십니다.

WHEN KNOWLEDGE HURTS

Zach Elder and his friends pulled up to shore after a twenty-five-day rafting trip through the Grand Canyon. The man who came to retrieve their rafts told them about the COVID-19 virus. They thought he was joking. But as they left the canyon their phones pinged with their parents’ urgent messages. Zach and his friends were stunned. They wished they could return to the river and escape what they now knew.

In a fallen world, knowledge often brings pain. The wise Teacher of Ecclesiastes observed, “With much wisdom comes much sorrow; the more knowledge, the more grief” (1:18). Who hasn’t envied a child’s blissful ignorance? She doesn’t yet know about racism, violence, and cancer. Weren’t we happier before we grew up and discerned our own weaknesses and vices? Before we learned our family’s secrets—why our uncle drinks heavily or what caused our parents’ divorce?

The pain from knowledge can’t be wished away. Once we know, it’s no use pretending we don’t. But there’s a higher knowledge that empowers us to endure, even thrive. Jesus is the Word of God, the light that shines in our darkness (JOHN 1:1–5). He “has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption” (1 CORINTHIANS 1:30). Your pain is your reason to run to Jesus. He knows you and cares for you.

불을 켜 두어라

어느 호텔 체인의 광고를 보니 어두운 밤에 작은 건물이 하나 서 있고 그 주변에는 아무것도 없습니다. 영상 속에 빛이라고는 호텔 현관문 가까이 있는 작은 등에서 비추는 불빛 밖에 없습니다. 하지만 그 등불은 방문자가 계단을 올라가 호텔에 들어가기에 충분한 밝은 빛을 비추고 있습니다. 광고 문구는 이렇게 끝을 맺었습니다. “당신을 위해 불을 켜 두겠습니다.”

현관의 불빛은 지친 여행자들이 멈추고 쉴 수 있는 편안한 곳이 지금도 영업중임을 알리는 환영의 표시와도 같습니다. 그 불빛은 지나가던 사람들에게 어둡고 지친 여행길에서 들어와 쉬라고 초대합니다.

예수님은 그를 믿는 사람들의 삶은 환영하는 불빛과도 같은 삶이어야 한다고 말씀하십니다. 주님은 제자들에게 “너희는 세상의 빛이라 산 위에 있는 동네가 숨겨지지 못할 것”(마태복음 5:14)이라고 말씀하셨습니다. 믿는 우리는 이 어두운 세상을 밝게 비추어야 합니다.

주님이 우리를 이끄시고 능력을 주실 때 “[사람들이] [우리의] 착한 행실을 보고 하늘에 계신 [우리] 아버지께 영광을 돌릴”(16절) 것입니다. 그리고 우리의 불을 계속 켜 두면 그들은 마음에 환대를 느끼고 우리에게 와서 세상의 참된 빛이신 예수님에 대해 더 알고 싶어 할 것입니다(요한복음 8:12). 지치고 어두운 이 세상에서 예수님의 빛은 항상 켜져 있습니다.

LEAVE THE LIGHT ON

A hotel chain’s commercial featured one little building standing amidst a dark night. Nothing else was around. The only light in the scene came from a small lamp near the door on the porch of the building. The bulb cast enough illumination for a visitor to walk up the steps and enter the building. The commercial ended with the phrase, “We’ll leave the light on for you.”

A porch light is akin to a welcome sign, reminding weary travelers that there’s a comfortable place still open where they can stop and rest. The light invites those passing by to come on in and escape from the dark, weary journey.

Jesus says the lives of those who believe in Him should resemble that of a welcoming light. He told His followers, “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden” (MATTHEW 5:14). As believers, we’re to illuminate a dark world.

As He directs and empowers us, “[others] may see [our] good deeds and glorify [our] Father in heaven” (V. 16). And as we leave our lights on, they will feel welcomed to come to us to learn more about the one true Light of the World—Jesus (JOHN 8:12). In a weary and dark world, His light always remains on.

Have you left your light on? As Jesus shines through you today, others may see and begin radiating His light too.

1879년에 윌리엄 빌을 본 사람들은 아마도 그를 이상한 사람이라 여겼을 것입니다. 식물학 교수였던 그가 다양한 씨앗들을 스무 개의 병에 담아 땅속 깊이 묻는 것을 본 것입니다. 그러나 사람들은 빌이 그후 몇 백 년간 이어질 종자의 발아 능력 실험을 한다는 것을 몰랐습니다. 매 20년마다 병 하나를 꺼내어 병 속에 담겨있는 종자들을 심어 어떤 것이 싹이 나는지 관찰하려 했던 것입니다.

예수님은 씨 뿌리기에 관해 많이 이야기하시면서 종종 씨 뿌리는 것을 “말씀”을 전하는 것에 비유하셨습니다(마가복음 4:15). 주님은 어떤 씨는 사탄이 가로채고, 어떤 씨는 기초가 없으므로 뿌리내리지 못하며, 어떤 씨는 주변 것들에 방해를 받아 자라지 못한다고 가르치셨습니다(15-19절). 복음을 전할 때 어떤 씨앗이 살아 남을지는 우리에게 달린 것이 아닙니다. 우리의 할 일은 단지 예수님을 다른 사람들에게 전하는 것, 곧 복음을 뿌리는 것입니다. “온 천하에 다니며 만민에게 복음을 전파하라”(16:15).

SEEDS OF TIME

In 1879, people watching William Beal would likely think he was loony. They’d see the professor of botany filling twenty bottles with various seeds, then burying them in deep soil. What they didn’t know was that Beal was conducting a seed viability experiment that would span centuries. Every twenty years a bottle would be dug up to plant its seeds and see which seeds would germinate.

Jesus talked a lot about seed planting, often likening the sowing of seed to the spreading of “the word” (MARK 4:15). He taught that some seeds are snatched by Satan, others have no foundation and don’t take root, and yet others are hampered by the life around them and are choked out (VV. 15–19). As we spread the good news, it’s not up to us which seeds will survive. Our job is simply to sow the gospel—to tell others about Jesus: “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation” (16:15 ESV).

In 2021, another of Beal’s bottles was dug up. The seeds were planted by researchers and some sprouted, having survived more than 142 years. As God works through us and we share our faith with others, we never know if the word we share will take root or when. But we’re to be encouraged that our sowing of the good news might, even after many years, be received by someone who will “accept it, and produce a crop” (4:20).

하나님을 사랑하고 의지하라

잭은 유쾌하고 똑똑하며 호감이 가는 아이였지만 남몰래 우울증을 앓고 있었습니다. 그는 열다섯 살에 자살하고 말았는데, 어머니 로리는 그후 아들에 대해 이렇게 말했습니다. “그렇게 많은 것을 가졌던 아이가 어떻게 여기까지 오게 됐는지 정말 모르겠어요. 잭도... 자살할 수 있는 아이였던 거예요.” 로리는 가끔씩 조용히 하나님께 슬픔을 쏟아내곤 합니다. 그녀는 자살 후에 느끼는 깊은 슬픔은 “전혀 다른 차원의 슬픔”이라고 말합니다. 하지만 로리와 그녀의 가족은 하나님과 다른 사람들을 의지하여 힘을 얻는 법을 배웠고, 지금은 우울증을 앓는 사람들을 사랑하는 데 시간을 보내고 있습니다.

우리가 슬픔에 빠져 있을 때에도 하나님의 사랑은 한결같습니다. 우리에게는 언제나 의지할 하나님이 계시고, 또 그분의 능력으로 다른 사람들을 의지하고 사랑할 수 있습니다.

LOVE AND LEAN ON GOD

Zach was funny, smart, and well-liked. But he secretly struggled with depression. After he committed suicide at age fifteen, his mom, Lori, said of him, “It’s just hard to comprehend how someone that had so much going for him would come to that point. Zach . . . was not exempt from suicide.” There are moments in the quiet when Lori pours out her sorrow to God. She says that the deep sadness after suicide is “a whole different level of grief.” Yet she and her family have learned to lean on God and others for strength, and now they’re using their time to love others who are grappling with depression.

Lori’s motto has become “Love and lean.” This idea is also seen in the Old Testament story of Ruth. Naomi lost her husband and two sons—one who was married to Ruth (RUTH 1:3–5). Naomi, bitter and depressed, urged Ruth to return to her mother’s family where she could be cared for. Ruth, though also grieving, “clung” to her mother-in-law and committed to staying with her and caring for her (VV. 14–17). They returned to Bethlehem, Naomi’s homeland, where Ruth would be a foreigner. But they had each other to love and lean on, and God provided for them (2:11–12).

During our times of grief, God’s love remains steady. We always have Him to lean on as we also lean on and love others in His strength.

계획과 섭리

2000년에 영화 대여 우편 시스템을 운영하던 한 신생 회사는 당시 영화와 비디오게임 대여 시장을 장악했던 블록버스터에게 5천만 달러에 회사를 매각하겠다고 제안했습니다. 당시 넷플릭스의 가입자는 약 30만 명이었고, 블록버스터는 수백만 명의 가입자를 보유하고 있었습니다. 하지만 블록버스터는 그 작은 경쟁사를 사들일 기회를 그냥 흘려버렸습니다. 결과는 어떻게 되었을까요? 오늘날 넷플릭스는 가입자가 1억 8천만 명 이상 되고 그 가치가 거의 2천억 달러에 이르지만, 블록버스터는 빈털터리가 되고 말았습니다. 미래를 예측할 수 있는 사람은 아무도 없습니다.

우리는 자신의 삶을 통제하고 있으며 미래에 대한 계획도 성공할 거라고 믿고 싶어 하지만, 야고보는 “너희는 잠깐 보이다가 없어지는 안개”(4:14)라고 말합니다. 인생은 우리가 흔히 아는 것보다 짧고 빠르며 더 연약합니다. 계획을 세우는 것은 필요하지만 우리에게 통제권이 있다고 가정하는 것은 섣부른 판단입니다. “그러한 자랑은 다 악한 것”이기 때문에 야고보가 “[우리의] 허탄한 자랑”을 하지 말라고 경고하고 있는 것입니다(16절).

이 악한 행실을 피하는 방법은 감사하는 마음으로 하나님의 일에 참여하는 것입니다. 감사할 때 우리는 온갖 “좋은 은사와 온전한 선물”(1:17) 의 원천이 주님이라는 사실을 잊지 않게 됩니다. 그렇게 되면 우리가 하나님께 나아갈 때 단지 현재와 미래의 우리 계획만 축복해 달라고 간구하지 않고 우리도 하나님께서 하시는 일에 동참하게 해달라고 간구하게 됩니다. “주의 뜻이면”(4:15)이라고 기도하는 것은 바로 이런 의미입니다.

PLANS AND PROVIDENCE

In 2000, an upstart company operating on a movie-rental-bymail system offered to sell their company for $50 million to Blockbuster, the home movies and video game rentals king at that time. Netflix had roughly 300,000 subscribers, while Blockbuster had millions and millions of them. Blockbuster passed on the opportunity to purchase their little competitor. The result? Today Netflix has more than 180 million subscribers and is worth nearly $200 billion. As for Blockbuster, well . . . it went bust. None of us can predict the future.

We’re tempted to believe that we’re in control of our lives and that our plans for the future will succeed. But James says, “You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes” (4:14). Life is brief, quick, and more fragile than we often realize. Planning is necessary, but the sin of presumption is in the assumption that we’re in control. That’s why James warns us not to “boast in [our] arrogant schemes,” for “all such boasting is evil” (V. 16).

The way to avoid this sinful practice is through grateful participation with God. Gratitude reminds us that He’s the source of every “good and perfect gift” (1:17). Then when we come to God, we ask Him not to simply bless our present and future plans but to help us join Him in what He’s doing. This is what it means to pray, “If it is the Lord’s will” (4:15).

그냥 구하라!

환희에 찬 고함소리가 지하실에 있는 아내 셜리에게서 터져 나왔습니다. 몇 시간 동안 뉴스레터 과제를 붙들고 있던 아내는 거의 마무리 단계에 있었지만 어떻게 끝내야 할지 모르는 불안감과 불확실 속에서 하나님께 도와달라고 기도했습니다. 그녀는 페이스북을 통해 친구들에게도 도움을 요청했는데, 얼마 안 되어 과제는 팀워크에 의해 완료되었습니다.

뉴스레터 과제는 인생에서 작은 일이지만, 작은(그리고 그렇게 작지 않은) 일들이 걱정이나 불안을 가져올 수 있습니다. 처음 자녀를 양육하는 부모나 새로운 학업의 어려움에 직면한 학생, 사랑하는 사람을 잃고 슬퍼하는 사람, 가정이나 직장, 사역에서 어려움을 겪는 사람 등, 우리는 하나님께 도움을 구하지 않기 때문에 불필요하게 걱정할 때가 있습니다(야고보서 4:2).

바울은 당시의 빌립보 성도들에게, 그리고 우리들에게 도움이 필요할 때 우선적으로 무엇을 해야 할지 가르쳐주었습니다. “아무것도 염려하지 말고 다만 모든 일에 기도와 간구로, 너희 구할 것을 감사함으로 하나님께 아뢰라” (빌립보서 4:6). 삶이 복잡해질 때 우리는 찬송가 “죄짐 맡은 우리 구주”에 나오는 이 가사를 기억할 필요가 있습니다. “주께 고함 없는 고로 복을 얻지 못하네 사람들이 어찌하여 아뢸 줄을 모를까.”

그리고 하나님께 도움을 구할 때 하나님은 어쩌면 우리를 도와줄 수 있는 사람들에게 우리를 인도해 주실지도 모릅니다.

JUST ASK!

The gleeful shouts arising from our basement came from my wife, Shirley. For hours she’d wrestled with a newsletter project, and she was ready to be done with it. In her anxiety and uncertainty about how to move forward, she prayed for God’s help. She also reached out to Facebook friends and soon the project was completed—a team effort.

While a newsletter project is a little thing in life, small (and not so small) things can bring about worry or anxiousness. Perhaps you’re a parent walking through the stages of childrearing for the first time; a student facing newfound academic challenges; a person grieving the loss of a loved one; or someone experiencing a home, work, or ministry challenge. Sometimes we’re needlessly on edge because we don’t ask God for help (JAMES 4:2).

Paul pointed the followers of Jesus in Philippi and us to our first line of defense in times of need: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God” (PHILIPPIANS 4:6). When life gets complicated, we need reminders like the one from the hymn “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”: “Oh what peace we often forfeit, / oh what needless pain we bear, / all because we do not carry, / everything to God in prayer.”

And perhaps in our asking God for help, He’ll lead us to ask people who can assist us.
