우리에게 필요한 예수님의 도움

마침내 나의 아버지도 약한 존재라는 사실을 알게 된 날이 왔습니다. 어린 나에게 아버지는 힘이 세고 투지 넘치는 분이셨습니다. 그런데 내가 청년이 되어갈 무렵 아버지가 허리를 다치셨는데, 그 일로 아버지도 결국 보통 사람이라는 사실을 깨닫게 되었습니다. 나는 부모님과 함께 지내면서 아버지가 욕실에 가고 옷을 입고 심지어 물컵을 입에 대는 것까지 도와드렸는데, 그것이 아버지를 초라하게 만들었습니다. 아버지는 작은 일은 직접 해보려고 몇 번 시도해 보셨지만 “네 도움이 없이는 아무것도 할 수 없구나.”하며 현실을 받아들이셨습니다. 아버지는 마침내 강한 모습을 다시 회복하셨지만, 그 경험은 아버지와 나에게 중요한 교훈을 가르쳐주었습니다. 그것은 우리는 서로가 필요하다는 것입니다.

우리에게는 서로가 필요하지만, 무엇보다 예수님이 더 필요합니다. 요한복음 15장에 나오는 포도나무와 가지의 비유는 우리가 계속 꼭 붙잡아야 할 모습입니다. 그러나 그 중의 한 구절은 우리에게 위로가 되면서도 자신을 의존하는 것에 대해 경고해 줍니다. 우리는 ‘나에겐 아무 도움도 필요 없어.’ 라는 생각을 쉽게 합니다. 그러나 예수님은 “나를 떠나서는 너희가 아무것도 할 수 없음이라”(5절)고 분명히 말씀하십니다. 주님은 제자의 주된 특징인 “사랑, 기쁨, 화평”(갈라디아서 5:22)과 같은 열매를 맺는 것에 대해 말씀하고 계시는 것입니다. 예수님은 우리에게 열매 맺는 삶을 요구하십니다. 우리는 주님께 전적으로 의지할 때 하나님 아버지께 영광이 되는 열매 맺는 삶을 살 수 있습니다(요한복음 15:8).

WE NEED JESUS’ HELP

The day finally came—the day I realized my father wasn’t indestructible. As a boy, I knew his strength and determination. But in my early adult years, he injured his back, and I realized that my father was mortal after all. I stayed with my parents to help my dad to the bathroom, assisting him in dressing, even guiding a glass of water to his mouth—it was humbling to him. He made some initial attempts to accomplish small tasks, but admitted, “I can’t do anything without your help.” He eventually recovered to his strong self, but that experience taught both of us an important lesson. We need each other.

And while we need each other, we need Jesus even more. In John 15, the imagery of the vine and the branches continues to be one we cling to. Yet one of the other phrases, while comforting, can also strike at our self-reliance. The thought that can easily creep into our minds is, I don’t need help. Jesus is clear—“apart from me you can do nothing” (V. 5). Christ is talking about bearing fruit, like “love, joy, peace” (GALATIANS 5:22), those core features of a disciple. To bear fruit is the life Jesus calls us to, and our total reliance on Him yields a fruitful life, a life lived to the Father’s glory (JOHN 15:8).

청지기의 특권

휴가 중 남편과 해변을 걷다가 큰 사각형의 모래밭이 임시로 세운 울타리로 막혀 있는 것을 보았습니다. 한 청년이 바다거북 둥지의 알을 보호하기 위해 자원봉사자들과 밤새워 일했다고 설명했습니다. 둥지에서 나온 새끼 거북은 동물과 사람의 위협 때문에 생존율이 낮습니다. 그는 “우리가 이런 노력을 해도 5천 마리 중 겨우 한 마리만 어른이 된다고 과학자들은 추정합니다.”라고 말했습니다. 그러나 이 젊은이는 이런 암울한 숫자에 낙심하지 않았습니다. 새끼 거북의 부화를 위해 사심 없이 봉사하는 그의 열정이 바다거북을 귀하게 여기고 보호하고자 하는 나의 열망을 한층 더 깊게 해주었습니다. 이제 나는 하나님의 창조물을 돌볼 책임이 나에게도 있음을 잊지 않으려고 바다거북 목걸이를 하고 다닙니다.

하나님이 세상을 창조하셨을 때 모든 창조물이 살고 번성할 수 있는 서식처를 주셨습니다(창세기 1:20-25). 하나님은 그의 형상대로 우리를 만드시고 “바다의 물고기와 하늘의 새와 가축과 온 땅과 땅에 기는 모든 것을 다스리라” 고 하셨습니다(26절). 하나님은 우리가 하나님이 주신 권위로 그분의 방대한 창조물을 돌보는 책임 있는 청지기로서 그분을 섬기게 하십니다.

THE PRIVILEGE OF STEWARDSHIP

While on vacation, my husband and I walked along the beach and noticed a large, square patch of sand blocked off by a makeshift fence. A young man explained that he worked around the clock with a team of volunteers committed to guarding the eggs in each sea turtle’s nest. Once the hatchlings emerged from their nest, the presence of both animals and humans threaten and decrease their chance of survival. “Even with all our efforts,” he said, “scientists estimate that only one out of every five thousand hatchlings reach adulthood.” These bleak numbers didn’t discourage this young man, however. His passion for selflessly serving the hatchlings deepened my desire for respecting and protecting sea turtles. Now I wear a sea turtle pendant that reminds me of my God-given responsibility to care for the creatures He’s made.

When God created the world, He provided a habitat in which each creature could live and thrive (GENESIS 1:20–25). When He created His image-bearers, God intended for us to “rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground” (V. 26). He helps us serve Him as responsible stewards who use our God-given authority to care for His vast creation.

기도가 세상을 흔들 때

개리 그린버그 박사가 확대하여 찍은 전 세계 해변의 모래 사진들을 보면 종종 그 가운데 광물이나 조개껍질, 산호 조각들이 놀랍고 생생한 색으로 빛을 발하고 있습니다.

그는 모래에는 눈에 보이는 것보다 더 많은 것들이 있다는 것을 발견했습니다. 모래를 연구하는 모래학은 모래 속 광물질 성분을 현미경으로 분석하여 부식작용과 해류의 흐름, 이들이 해안선에 미치는 영향에 대해 많은 것을 밝혀냅니다. 작은 모래 한 알도 엄청난 가치를 지닌 정보를 알려줄 수 있습니다!

하나의 작은 기도도 모래 한 알과 같이 큰 역할을 할 수 있습니다. 성경은 하나님의 나라가 임하는데 있어 기도가 지니는 힘 있는 역할에 대해 보여줍니다. 요한계시록 8장에서 요한은 한 천사가 보좌 앞 제단 곁에 “모든 성도들의 기도”를 담은 금 향로를 가지고 서 있는 것을 봅니다. “그리고 천사가 향로를 가지고 와서 제단의 불을 가득 담아 땅에 던지자 천둥과 번개가 치며 지진과 요란한 소리가 났습니다”(3, 5절, 현대인의 성경).

천사가 기도와 불을 담은 향로를 쏟자마자 일곱 나팔을 가진 일곱 천사는 “나팔 불기를 준비하며”(6절) 이 옛 세상의 마지막 날과 그리스도의 재림을 선포합니다.

때때로 우리는 우리의 기도가 크게 보탬이 되지 않는다고 느낄지 모르지만 하나님은 그 하나도 놓치지 않으십니다. 하나님은 기도를 아주 귀하게 여기셔서 하나님 나라를 완성하는데 기도가 역할을 감당하게 하십니다. 우리에게 가장 작아 보이는 기도도 하나님과 함께하면 세상을 흔들 수 있는 무게를 지닐 수 있습니다!

WHEN PRAYER SHAKES THE EARTH

Dr. Gary Greenberg has magnified and photographed sand from beaches around the world, often revealing surprising, vibrant splashes of color from the minerals, shell, and coral fragments contained within.

He’s discovered there’s more to sand than meets the eye. In arenology (the study of sand), the microscopic analysis of sand’s mineral content can reveal much about erosion, shore currents, and their potential effects on coastlines. Even a little sand can yield information of great worth!

A single prayer, like a grain of sand, can be a weighty thing. Scripture indicates prayer’s powerful role in the coming of God’s kingdom. In Revelation 8, John sees an angel standing at the altar before His throne holding a golden censer containing “the prayers of all God’s people.” “Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and hurled it on the earth; and there came peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake” (VV. 3, 5).

Immediately after the angel hurled the censer filled with fire and prayer, seven angels with seven trumpets “prepared to sound them” (V. 6), heralding this old earth’s last days and Christ’s return.

Sometimes we may not feel like our prayers add up to much, but God doesn’t miss one. He so values them that they somehow even play a role in the consummation of His kingdom. What may seem like the smallest prayer to us can have earth-shaking weight with Him!

생명을 살리는 훈계

쉘리가 말했습니다. “유감스럽게도 우리는 얼마전 꽤 힘든 대화를 나눴습니다. 우리 둘에게 다 껄끄러운 대화였지만, 나는 그녀가 주변 사람들에게 상처를 주지 않도록 그녀의 태도와 행동을 지적해 주어야 하겠다고 느꼈습니다.” 쉘리는 자기가 지도하고 있는 젊은 여성에 대해 말하고 있습니다. 그 대화는 편하지는 않았지만 유익했으며, 오히려 둘의 관계를 더욱 돈독하게 해주었습니다. 몇 주 지나지 않아 두 사람은 겸손이란 주제로 전교인 기도회를 인도했습니다.

이런 공식적인 멘토링 관계 밖에서도 우리는 그리스도 안에서 형제 자매와 한두 번은 힘든 대화를 하게 될 것입니다. 시대를 초월하는 지혜의 책 잠언은 훈계를 주고받을 때의 겸손의 중요성을 계속 강조합니다. 사실 건설적인 비판은 “생명을 살리는 것”이라 불리며, 참된 지혜로 이끌어줍니다(잠언 15:31). 잠언 15장 5절은 미련한 자는 훈계를 업신여기지만 경계를 받는 사람은 슬기를 얻는다고 말합니다. 분명히 말해, “견책을 싫어하는 자는 죽을 것입니다”(10절). 쉘리가 보여준 것처럼 사랑으로 진실을 말하면 사람과의 관계에 새로운 생명을 불어넣을 수 있습니다.

당신 주위에 사랑의 말이나 생명을 살리는 훈계가 필요한 사람이 있습니까? 어쩌면 당신이 최근에 지혜로운 훈계에 분노나 무관심으로 대응하고 싶어 했는지도 모릅니다. 훈계를 무시하는 것은 자기 자신을 멸시하는 것이지만, 견책을 달게 받는 사람은 지식을 얻습니다(32절). 오늘 겸손함으로 서로를 훈계할 수 있도록 도와 달라고 하나님께 간구합시다.

LIFE-GIVING CORRECTION

“Unfortunately, we had a pretty hard conversation recently,” said Shellie. “I don’t think either of us enjoyed it, but I really felt her attitude and actions needed to be addressed in order to keep from hurting those around her.” Shellie was talking about the young woman she mentors. Although uncomfortable, their conversation was fruitful and actually strengthened their relationship. Just a few weeks later, the two women led a churchwide prayer time with the theme of humility.

Even outside of a formal mentoring relationship, we’ll face a tough conversation or two with a brother or sister in Christ. In Proverbs, a book full of timeless wisdom, the importance of humility in giving and receiving correction is a repeated theme. In fact, constructive criticism is called “life-giving” and leads to true wisdom (PROVERBS 15:31). Proverbs 15:5 says a fool spurns discipline, while those who heed correction show good judgment. Put plainly, “the one who hates correction will die” (V. 10). As Shellie witnessed, truth spoken in love can bring new life to a relationship.

Is there someone in your life to whom a word of loving, lifegiving correction should be spoken? Or perhaps you have recently received wise admonition and been tempted to respond with anger or indifference. To disregard discipline is to despise oneself, but to heed correction is to gain understanding (V. 32). Let’s ask God to help us give and receive correction with humility today.

켈리가 뇌암으로 투병 중일 때 코로나바이러스 위기가 닥쳤습니다. 그때 심장과 폐에 물이 차오르면서 다시 입원하게 되었는데 가족들은 코로나바이러스 대유행으로 인해 문병할 수도 없었습니다. 켈리의 남편 데이브는 무슨 일이든 해야겠다고 작정했습니다.

데이브는 아내가 사랑하는 사람들을 함께 모아 그들에게 메시지를 담은 큰 표지판을 만들어 오라고 부탁했습니다. 스무 명의 사람들이 표지판을 만들어 마스크를 쓴 채 병원 밖에서 “최고 엄마!”, “사랑해요”, “우리가 함께 해요.”라는 푯말을 들었습니다. 켈리는 간호사의 도움을 받아 4층 창가로 갔습니다. 데이브는 소셜 미디어에 “마스크와 흔드는 손 밖에 보이지 않았지만 그 마스크와 흔드는 손이 정말 아름다워 보였습니다.”라고 글을 올렸습니다.

바울 사도는 인생의 마지막 때에 로마 감옥에 갇혀 외로움을 느끼며 디모데에게 “너는 겨울 전에 어서 오라”(디모데후서 4:21)라고 썼습니다. 그러나 “주께서 내 곁에 서서 나에게 힘을 주셨다”(17절)고 한 것처럼 바울은 완전히 혼자는 아니었습니다. 그리고 “으불로와 부데와 리노와 글라우디아와 모든 형제가 다 네게 문안하느니라”(21절)라고 디모데에게 말한 것처럼 다른 신자들을 만나며 격려를 받았던 것도 분명해 보입니다.

우리는 공동체를 이루도록 지어졌으며, 위기에 처할 때 그 사실을 가장 절실히 느낍니다. 오늘 완전히 혼자라고 느끼는 누군가를 위해 무엇을 할 수 있을까요?

IN THIS TOGETHER

Kelly was battling brain cancer when the COVID-19 crisis hit. Then fluid developed around her heart and lungs, and she had to be hospitalized again. Her family couldn’t visit because of the pandemic. Her husband, Dave, vowed to do something.

Gathering loved ones together, Dave asked them to make large signs with messages. They did. Wearing masks, twenty people stood on the street outside the hospital holding signs: “Best Mom!” “Love You.” “We are with u.” With the help of a nurse, Kelly made her way to a fourth-floor window. “All we could see was a facemask and a waving hand,” her husband posted on social media, “but it was a beautiful facemask and waving hand.”

Late in his life, the apostle Paul felt alone as he languished in a Roman prison. He wrote to Timothy, “Do your best to get here before winter” (2 TIMOTHY 4:21). Yet Paul wasn’t totally alone. “The Lord stood at my side and gave me strength,” he said (V. 17). And it’s also apparent that he had some encouraging contact with other believers. “Eubulus greets you,” he said to Timothy, “and so do Pudens, Linus, Claudia and all the brothers and sisters” (V. 21).

We’re created for community, and we feel that most keenly when we’re in crisis. What might you do for someone who may feel entirely alone today?

“너 자신만의 것으로 만들어, 친구!”

2002년 6월 11일에 ‘아메리칸 아이돌’이라는 가수 오디션 프로그램이 첫 선을 보였습니다. 매주 기대에 부푼 참가자들이 기존의 유명한 곡들을 각자의 방식으로 부르면, 시청자들이 투표로 다음 단계로 나아갈 사람들을 결정했습니다.

프로그램의 심사위원 중 한 명인 랜디 잭슨의 대표적인 심사평은 이것이었습니다. “그 노래를 자신의 것으로 만들었네, 친구!” 그는 익숙한 곡을 골라 완전하게 습득하고 자신만의 것으로 독특하게 바꾸어 노래한 참가자에게 칭찬을 아끼지 않았습니다. “자신만의 것”을 해내기 위해서는 곡을 완벽하고 창의적으로 소화한 다음 전 세계가 보는 무대에 다시 올려야 합니다.

이와 유사하게 바울도 우리가 믿음을 우리 자신의 것으로 만들어 표현하라고 권고합니다. 빌립보서 3장에서 그는 하나님 앞에서 자신의 유익을 구하려는 시도를 거부하고(7-8절), 대신 “믿음으로 하나님께로부터 난 의”(9 절)를 품으라고 우리에게 가르칩니다. 용서와 구원의 선물은 우리의 동기와 목표를 바꾸어 줍니다. “오직 내가 그리스도 예수께 잡힌 바 된 그것을 잡으려고 달려가노라”(12절).

예수님은 우리에게 승리를 확보해 주셨습니다. 우리의 할 일은 하나님의 복음의 선물을 내면화한 후 이 깨어진 세상 가운데서 복음대로 살아가면서 그 진리를 붙잡는 것입니다. 다시 말해 믿음을 자신의 것으로 만들고, 그러는 가운데 “우리가 도달한 그 단계에 맞추어 행해야”(16절, 현대인의 성경) 하는 것입니다.

“ MAKE IT YOUR OWN, DAWG!”

On June 11, 2002, the singing competition American Idol debuted. Each week, hopefuls performed their own versions of popular songs, and the viewing audience voted on who advanced to the next round of the competition.

As one of the panel judges on the show, Randy Jackson’s signature feedback was this zinger: “You made that song your own, dawg!” He lavished that praise when a singer took a familiar tune, learned it inside out, and then performed it in a new way that gave it a unique, personal spin. To “make it their own” was to own it completely and creatively, and then offer it to the world onstage.

Paul invites us to do something similar to own our faith and our expression of it, too. In Philippians 3, he rejects attempts to earn right standing before God (VV. 7–8). Instead, he teaches us to embrace “the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith” (V. 9). The gift of forgiveness and redemption transforms our motivation and goals: “I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me” (V. 12).

Jesus has secured our victory. Our job? To take hold of that truth, internalizing God’s gospel gift and living it out amid our broken world. In other words, we’re to make our faith our own and in so doing “live up to what we have already attained” (V. 16).

햇빛 웅덩이

어느 더운 여름날 네 살 난 손녀 몰리와 함께 공놀이를 한 후 잠시 쉬고 있었습니다. 같이 집 현관 앞에 앉아 물을 마시고 있었는데, 몰리가 갑자기 마당을 가리키며 “저기 햇빛 웅덩이 좀 봐요.”라고 했습니다. 햇살이 무성한 나뭇잎을 투과하여 어두운 그림자 가운데 빛의 웅덩이 모양을 만들고 있었습니다.

햇빛 웅덩이. 마치 어두운 날들 속에서 희망을 보는 듯한 아름다운 표현이지 않습니까? 종종 좋은 소식이 많지 않은 힘든 삶 가운데서도 우리는 어두운 그림자에 집중하기보다는 밝은 빛에 초점을 맞출 수 있습니다.

그 빛은 바로 예수님입니다. 마태는 이사야서를 인용하여 예수님이 이 세상에 오셨을 때 들어온 빛에 대해 기록했습니다. “흑암에 앉은 백성이 큰 빛을 보았고 사망의 땅과 그늘에 앉은 자들에게 빛이 비치었도다”(마태복음 4:16; 이사야 9:2 참조). 우리가 “사망의 땅과 그늘”에 살 동안에는 죄의 영향력이 우리 온 주위에 퍼져 있습니다. 하지만 이 세상을 아주 웅장하고 영광스럽게 비추시는 빛이신 예수님이 그 그림자를 뚫고 비추고 계십니다(요한복음 1:4-5).

예수님의 사랑과 자비의 빛은 그림자를 뚫고서 ‘햇빛 웅덩이’가 되어 우리의 나날을 비추시고 우리의 마음을 희망으로 밝히십니다.

PUDDLES OF SUNSHINE

It was a warm summer day and my four-year-old granddaughter Mollie and I were taking a break from playing ball. As we sat on the porch with our glasses of water, Mollie looked out at the yard and said, “Look at the puddles of sunshine.” The sunlight was filtering through the thick foliage to create a pattern of light amid the dark shadows.

Puddles of sunshine. Isn’t this a beautiful image for finding hope in dark days? In the midst of what can often be challenging times—when good news seems in short supply—instead of concentrating on the shadows, we can focus on the light.

The Light has a name—Jesus. Matthew quoted Isaiah to describe the brightness that came into the world when Jesus arrived: “The people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has dawned” (MATTHEW 4:16; SEE ALSO ISAIAH 9:2). The effects of sin are all around us as we live in the “land of the shadow of death.” But shining through that shadow is Jesus, the grand and glorious light of the world (JOHN 1:4–5).

The sunshine of Jesus’ love and compassion breaks through the shadow—giving us “puddles of sunshine” to illuminate our day and brighten our hearts with hope.

하나님의 선하심이 따르리니

고등학교 때 한 여성 의류 매장에서 처음 일을 시작했는데, 거기서는 여성 보안 요원이 손님으로 가장하여 옷을 훔칠 것 같은 사람을 따라다니며 계속 감시했습니다. 상점 주인이 정해 놓은 수상한 사항에 적용되는 사람이 감시 대상이었고, 그렇지 않은 사람은 감시하지 않았습니다. 쇼핑을 갔다가 나 자신이 수상한 사람으로 지목되어 따라다니는 감시를 당한 적이 있었는데, 그 수법을 알고 있던 터라 내게는 흥미로운 경험이었습니다.

이와는 아주 대조적으로 다윗은 하늘의 축복, 곧 하나님의 선하심과 인자하심이 자신을 따라다닌다고 말했습니다. 이 두 가지 축복은 아무런 의심 없이 참된 사랑으로 그를 따라다니면서 언제나 가까이 머물러 있습니다. 전도자 찰스 스펄전이 “쌍둥이 수호천사”라고 불렀던 이 두 축복은 우울한 날에도 밝은 날에도 신자들을 가까이 따라다닙니다. “찬란한 여름뿐 아니라 황량한 겨울에도 그분의 선하심은 우리의 모든 필요를 공급하시고, 그의 인자하심은 우리의 죄를 닦아내 주십니다.”

한때 목동이었던 다윗은 하나님께서 선하심과 인자하심을 함께 묶어 공급하시는 의도를 잘 알고 있었습니다. 두려움과 근심, 유혹, 의심 같은 다른 것들도 신자들을 따라다닐 수 있습니다. 하지만 다윗은 조금도 의심 없이 “반드시” 하나님의 선하심과 인자하심이 우리를 언제나 따른다고 말합니다.

다윗은 이렇게 기쁨으로 고백했습니다. “내 평생에 선하심과 인자하심이 반드시 나를 따르리니 내가 여호와의 집에 영원히 살리로다”(시편 23:6). 본향까지 우리를 따르는 이 선물이 실로 놀랍지 않습니까!

FOLLOWED BY GOD’S GOODNESS

At my first job during my high school years, I worked at a women’s clothing store where a female security guard dressed as a shopper followed women she thought might steal the merchandise. Certain people fit profiles of those the store owners thought were suspicious. Others not considered a threat were left alone. I’ve been profiled in stores myself and followed, an interesting experience since I still recognize the tactic.

In sharp contrast, David declared he was followed by a divineblessing—God’s goodness and mercy. These two gifts always stay close, following him not with suspicion but real love. The “twin guardian angels,” as evangelist Charles Spurgeon described the pair, follow believers closely during both bleak days and bright. “The dreary days of winter as well as the bright days of summer. Goodness supplies our needs, and mercy blots out our sins.”

As a onetime shepherd, David understood this intentional pairing of goodness and mercy as it’s provided by God. Other things could follow believers—fear, worry, temptation, doubts. But “surely,” David declares with undoubting certainty, God’s kind goodness and loving mercy follow us always.

As David rejoiced, “Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever” (PSALM 23:6). What an amazing gift to follow us home!

온 세상이 노래할 때

1970년대의 광고 노래 하나가 한 세대에 영향을 준 적이 있었습니다. 이 곡은 본래 “진정한 것(The Real Thing)”이라는 코카콜라 광고의 일부로 짧은 곡이었는데, 영국의 “뉴 시커스”라는 그룹이 단축본이 아닌 곡으로 만들어 노래해서 전 세계적으로 음악 순위의 정상에 올랐습니다. 하지만 많은 사람들은 로마 외곽의 언덕에서 젊은이들이 함께 부르던 텔레비전 버전의 원래의 짧은 노래를 결코 잊지 못할 것입니다. 꿀벌과 과일나무가 보이는 장면이 엉뚱하기는 했지만, 사랑의 마음과 사랑의 하모니로 노래하도록 이 세상을 가르치고 싶었던 한 작곡가의 열망이 우리 모두의 마음을 울렸습니다.

요한 사도는 그 노래보다 더 엄청난 이상적인 꿈을 묘사합니다. “하늘 위에와 땅 위에와 땅 아래와 바다 위에와 또 그 가운데 모든 피조물이” (요한계시록 5:13) 함께 노래를 부르는 환상을 보았습니다. 이 찬송에는 그 어떤 기발한 연출도 없습니다. 이 찬송의 당사자인 예수님이 치르신 대가보다 더 사실적인 내용은 없습니다. 예수님의 사랑의 희생으로 극복하게 된, 전쟁과 죽음, 그리고 그 결과를 보는 것보다 더 끔찍한 환상은 없습니다.

WHEN THE WHOLE WORLD SINGS

A commercial jingle of the 1970s inspired a generation. Created as part of Coca Cola’s “The Real Thing” ad campaign, a British group called The New Seekers eventually sang it as a fulllength song that climbed to the top of music charts around the world. But many will never forget the original television version sung by young people on a hilltop outside of Rome. Whimsical as it was, with visions of honeybees and fruit trees, we resonated with a songwriter’s desire to teach the world to sing with the heart and harmony of love.

The apostle John describes something like that idealized dream, only vastly greater. He envisioned a song sung by “every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them” (REVELATION 5:13). There’s nothing whimsical about this anthem. Nothing could be more realistic than the price paid by the One to whom this song is sung. Neither could there be anything more foreboding than the visions of war, death, and consequence that His sacrifice of love would have to overcome.

Yet this is what it took for the Lamb of God to bear our sin and defeat death, overcome our fear of death, and teach all heaven and earth to sing—in perfect harmony.

열쇠

토마스 키팅의 고전 ‘인간 조건’이라는 책에는 잊지 못할 이야기가 있습니다. 집 열쇠를 잃어버린 선생님이 풀밭에 엎드려 열쇠를 찾고 있었습니다. 열쇠를 찾는 선생님을 본 제자들도 함께 찾았지만 열쇠는 안 보였습니다. 마침내 “한 똑똑한 제자”가 이렇게 묻습니다. “선생님, 열쇠를 어디서 잃어버렸는지 혹시 기억나세요?” 선생님이 대답합니다. “당연하지. 집 안에서 잃어버렸어.” “그럼 왜 우리가 집 바깥에서 찾고 있어요?”라고 제자들이 묻자 선생님은 “당연하지 않아? 여기가 더 밝으니까.”라고 대답합니다.

키팅은 여기서 우리가 “하나님과의 친밀함과 하나님의 사랑의 임재를 경험하게” 해주는 열쇠를 잃어버렸다고 결론 내립니다. “그 경험 없이는 어떤 것도 가능하지 않습니다. 하지만 그것을 경험하면 거의 모든 것이 가능합니다.”

삶의 기복 속에서도 하나님이 여전히 우리의 가장 깊은 소망의 열쇠가 되신다는 사실을 우리는 너무나 쉽게 잊어버립니다. 하지만 우리가 모든 그릇된 곳을 향하는 것을 멈출 때 하나님은 거기서 우리에게 참된 안식을 보여주십니다. 마태복음 11장에서 예수님은 하나님의 길을 “지혜롭고 슬기 있는 자들”에게는 숨기시고 “어린아이들”에게는 나타내신 하나님 아버지를 찬양합니다(25절). 그러시고 나서 “수고하고 무거운 짐 진 자들”(28절)을 불러 안식으로 초대하십니다.

우리가 어린아이와 같이 “마음이 온유하고 겸손”(29절) 하신 우리 예수님의 길을 배워 나갈 때 우리는 참된 평안을 얻을 수 있습니다. 우리를 본향으로 맞이하고 싶어 하시는 하나님께서 거기 계십니다.

THE KEY

In his classic book The Human Condition, Thomas Keating shares this memorable tale. A teacher, having lost the key to his home, is on his hands and knees searching through the grass. When his disciples see him searching, they join the hunt, but with no success. Finally, “one of the more intelligent disciples” asks, “Master, have you any idea where you might have lost the key?” Their teacher replies, “Of course. I lost it in the house.” When they exclaim, “Then why are we looking for it out here?” he answers, “Isn’t it obvious? There is more light here.”

We have lost the key to “intimacy with God, the experience of God’s loving presence,” Keating concludes. “Without that experience, nothing else quite works; with it, almost anything works.”

How easy it is to forget that even in life’s ups and downs, God remains the key to our deepest longings. But when we’re ready to stop looking in all the wrong places, God is there, ready to show us true rest. In Matthew 11, Jesus praises the Father for revealing His ways, not to the “wise and learned,” but “to little children” (V. 25). Then He invites “all you who are weary and burdened” (V. 28) to come to Him for rest.

Like little children, we can find true rest as we learn the ways of our Teacher, who’s “gentle and humble in heart” (V. 29). God is there, eager to welcome us home.
