동산의 하나님

여러 해 전 조니 미첼은 “우드스톡”이라는 노래를 지어 불렀는데, 거기서 악마와 “거래” 관계에 얽매여 있는 인류의 모습을 그렸습니다. 청중들에게 더 단순하고 더 평화적인 삶을 추구하라고 하면서 “동산” 으로 돌아갈 것을 노래합니다. 미첼은 삶의 목적과 의미를 갈구하는 세대를 대변해서 말했던 것입니다.

미첼이 시적으로 표현한 “동산”은 물론 에덴을 말합니다. 에덴은 태초에 하나님께서 우리를 위해 창조하신 낙원이었습니다. 이 동산에서 아담과 하와는 악마와 거래를 한 바로 그 날까지 정기적으로 하나님을 만났습니다(창세기 3:6-7 참조). 그러나 그 날은 달랐습니다. “그 날 저녁, 날이 서늘할 때에 아담과 그의 아내는 여호와 하나님이 동산에서 거니시는 소리를 듣고 그분의 낯을 피하여 동산 나무 사이에 숨었습니다”(8절, 현대인의 성경).

하나님께서 그들에게 무엇을 했냐고 물으셨을 때 아담과 하와는 서로를 책망했습니다. 그들이 부인함에도 불구하고 하나님은 그들을 그곳에 그대로 남겨두지 않으셨습니다. 하나님은 “아담과 그의 아내를 위하여 가죽옷을 지어 입히셨는데”(21절), 그것은 훗날 예수님께서 우리의 죄를 덮기 위해 돌아가실 것을 암시한 희생 제물이었습니다.

하나님은 우리가 에덴으로 돌아갈 수 있는 길을 주지 않으셨으나, 그분과의 회복된 관계로 나아갈 수 있는 길을 주셨습니다. 우리는 동산으로 돌아갈 수는 없지만, 동산의 하나님께로 돌아갈 수 있습니다.

GOD OF THE GARDEN

Many years ago, Joni Mitchell wrote a song called “Woodstock” in which she saw the human race trapped in a “bargain” with the devil. Urging her listeners to seek a simpler, more peaceful existence, she sang of a return to “the garden.” Mitchell spoke for a generation longing for purpose and meaning.

Mitchell’s poetical “garden” is Eden, of course. Eden was the paradise God created for us back in the beginning. In this garden, Adam and Eve met with God on a regular basis—until the day they made their bargain with the devil (SEE GENESIS 3:6–7). That day was different. “Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden” (V. 8).

When God asked what they’d done, Adam and Eve engaged in a lot of blame-shifting. Despite their denial, God didn’t leave them there. He “made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them” (V. 21), a sacrifice that hinted at the death Jesus would endure to cover our sins.

God didn’t give us a way back to Eden. He gave us a way forward into restored relationship with Him. We can’t return to the garden. But we can return to the God of the garden.

가벼운 차림으로 여행하기

제임스는 워싱턴 주의 시애틀에서 캘리포니아 주 샌디에이고까지 미국 서부 해안을 따라 1,250마일(약 2,000킬로미터)을 자전거로 달리는 모험을 감행했습니다. 출발지에서 930마일(약 1,500킬로미터)을 지난 빅서(Big Sur)라는 절벽 지역에서 내 친구가 이 야심만만한 자전거 여행자를 만났습니다. 얼마 전 그가 캠핑 장비를 도둑맞았다는 이야기를 듣고 내 친구가 담요와 스웨터를 주겠다고 했지만 제임스는 필요 없다고 받지 않았습니다. 따뜻한 남쪽으로 내려가기 때문에 물건을 버리기 시작해야 한다는 것입니다. 그리고 목적지에 가까워질수록 피곤이 쌓이기 때문에 짐의 무게를 줄일 필요도 있다고 했습니다.

예수 믿는 사람들이 하는 경주에는 “인내”가 요구됩니다(1절). 계속 달릴 수 있게 하는 방법 중 하나는 우리를 무겁게 하는 용서하지 못하는 마음과 인색함, 그리고 우리를 가로막는 다른 죄에서 벗어나 자유로워지는 것입니다.

예수님의 도우심 없이는 가벼운 차림으로 여행할 수도 없고, 이 경주를 잘 마칠 수도 없습니다. 우리가 “믿음의 주요 또 온전하게 하시는 예수”를 바라봄으로 “피곤하여 낙심하지 않게” 되기를 바랍니다(2-3절).

TRAVELING LIGHT

A man named James took an adventurous, 1,250-mile journey down the West Coast of the US—biking from Seattle, Washington, to San Diego, California. A friend of mine met the ambitious biker near the cliffs of Big Sur, 930 miles from his starting point. After learning that someone had recently stolen James’ camping gear, my friend offered his blanket and sweater, but James refused. He said that as he traveled south into the warmer climate, he needed to begin shedding items. And the closer he got to his destination, the more tired he became, so he needed to reduce the weight he was carrying.

James’ realization was smart. It’s a reflection of what the writer of Hebrews is saying too. As we continue our journey in life, we need to “throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles” (12:1). We need to travel light to press on.

As believers in Jesus, running this race requires “perseverance” (V. 1). And one of the ways to ensure we can keep going is to be free of the weight of unforgiveness, pettiness, and other sins that will hinder us.

Without Jesus’ help, we can’t travel light and run this race well. May we look to the “pioneer and perfecter of faith” so that we won’t “grow weary and lose heart” (VV. 2–3).

하나님은 아십니다

대형 추상화 작품을 감상하려고 멈추어 서 있던 한 부부가 그림 아래에 열려 있는 물감 통과 붓이 있는 것을 보았습니다. 부부는 그것을 누구나 창작에 참여할 수 있는 “미완성 작품”으로 짐작하고 물감으로 몇 번 색을 칠한 후 그 자리를 떴습니다. 하지만 작가는 그림의 재료를 완성된 작품의 일부로 여겨 그곳에 의도적으로 전시했던 것입니다. 미술관에서는 사건의 영상을 검토한 후 그것이 오해로 빚어진 것임을 인정하고 변상을 요구하지 않았습니다.

요단강 동쪽에 거주하던 이스라엘 백성들이 강 옆에 큰 제단을 쌓자 오해를 불러일으켰습니다. 예배를 위해 하나님께서 인정한 유일한 장소가 성막뿐이라는 것을 누구나 알고 있었기에 강 서쪽에 거주하는 지파들은 그것을 하나님에 대한 반역으로 여겼습니다(여호수아 22:16).

긴장이 고조되자 동쪽 지파 사람들이 그것은 하나님의 제단의 모형일 뿐이라고 해명했습니다. 그들은 후손들이 그것을 보고 이스라엘의 다른 지파와의 영적, 혈연관계를 인식할 수 있기를 바랐던 것입니다(28-29절). 동쪽 지파 사람들은 이렇게 외쳤습니다. “전능하신 자 하나님 여호와께서 아십니다”(22절). 다행히도 다른 지파 사람들이 귀 기울여 듣고 정황을 파악한 후 하나님을 찬양하고 집으로 돌아갔습니다.

하나님은 “모든 마음을 감찰하사 모든 의도를 아시기”(역대상 28:9) 때문에 모든 사람들의 마음속 동기를 분명히 아십니다. 혼란스러운 상황을 해결하기 위해 하나님께 도움을 구하면 하나님은 우리에게 해명할 기회를 주시거나 가해자를 용서할 수 있는 은혜를 주시기도 합니다. 다른 사람들과의 화합을 위해 노력할 때 우리는 하나님을 의지할 수 있습니다.

GOD KNOWS

A couple who stopped to admire a large abstract painting noticed open paint cans and brushes underneath it. Assuming it was a “work in progress” that anyone could help create, they stroked in some color and left. The artist, though, had purposefully left the supplies there as part of the finished work’s display. After reviewing video footage of the incident, the gallery acknowledged the misunderstanding and didn’t press charges.

The Israelites who lived east of the Jordan created a misunderstanding when they built a massive altar next to the river. The western tribes viewed this as rebellion against God—everyone knew the tabernacle was the only God-approved place for worship (JOSHUA 22:16).

Tensions mounted until the eastern tribes explained that they only meant to make a replica of God’s altar. They wanted their descendants to see it and recognize their spiritual and ancestral connection with the rest of Israel (VV. 28–29). They exclaimed: “The Mighty One, God, the Lord! He knows!” (V. 22). Thankfully, the others listened. They saw what was going on, praised God, and returned home.

Because God “searches every heart and understands every desire and every thought” (1 CHRONICLES 28:9), everyone’s motives are clear to Him. If we ask Him to help us sort out confusing situations, He may give us the chance to explain ourselves or the grace we need to forgive offenses. We can turn to Him when we’re striving for unity with others.

성장하도록 부르심을 받음

멍게는 이상한 생명체입니다. 바위와 조개껍질에 붙어있는 멍게는 마치 물결에 흔들리는 부드러운 플라스틱 튜브처럼 보입니다. 활발했던 어릴 때와는 달리 흐르는 물에서 영양분을 섭취하면서 수동적인 생활을 합니다.

멍게는 먹이를 찾고 자신을 보호하는 기능을 하는 원시적인 척수와 두뇌를 갖춘 올챙이 같은 모습으로 삶을 시작합니다. 어렸을 때는 바다를 탐색하며 시간을 보내지만 성체에 이르면 변화가 일어나, 바위에 달라붙어서 탐색과 성장을 멈추어 버립니다. 그리고 자신의 뇌를 먹어 치우는 섬뜩한 반전을 보여줍니다.

척추도 없이 생각도 없이 수동적으로 물결에 따라 사는 멍게. 베드로 사도는 우리에게 그런 멍게의 운명을 쫓지 말라고 권면합니다. 우리는 성장하도록 부르심을 받았고, 그것은 곧 하나님의 성품에 참여하는 것 (베드로후서 1:4)을 의미합니다. 성장은 곧 정신적으로는 그리스도를 아는 지식을 (3:18), 영적으로는 덕과 인내, 그리고 절제의 모습을(1:5–7), 실제 삶에서는 서로 사랑하고 대접하며, 각각 은사를 받은 대로 봉사하는 것을 더해가는 것입니다 (베드로전서 4:7-11). 베드로는 이같은 성장을 통해 우리가 “게으르지 않고 열매 없는”(베드로후서 1:8) 삶을 살지 않을 거라고 말합니다.

이 성장에로의 부르심은 십 대뿐 아니라 칠십 세의 사람에게도 똑같이 아주 중요합니다. 하나님의 성품은 바다처럼 광대한데, 우리는 고작 몇 미터 밖에 나아가지 못했습니다. 하나님의 끝없는 성품을 탐구하며 새로운 영적 모험을 떠나 보십시오. 배우고 섬기며 위험을 감수해 내십시오. ‘성장하십시오.’

CALLED TO GROW

The sea squirt is a strange creature. Found attached to rocks and shells, it looks like a soft plastic tube waving with the current. Drawing its nutrients from the passing water, it lives a passive life far removed from its once–active youth.

The sea squirt starts life as a tadpole with a primitive spinal cord and brain that helps it find food and avoid harm. As a juvenile, it spends its days exploring the ocean, but something happens when it reaches adulthood. Settling on its rock, it stops exploring and growing. In a macabre twist, it digests its own brain.

Spineless, thoughtless, flowing passively with the current. The apostle Peter encourages us not to follow the sea squirt’s fate. Since maturity for us means taking on God’s nature (2 PETER 1:4), you and I are called to grow—grow mentally in our knowledge of Christ (3:18); spiritually in traits like goodness, perseverance, and self-control (1:5–7); and practically by exploring new ways to love, offer hospitality, and serve others through our gifts (1 PETER 4:7–11). Such growth, Peter says, will stop us from living “ineffective and unproductive” lives (2 PETER 1:8).

This calling to grow is as vital for the seventy-year-old as it is for the teenager. God’s nature is as vast as the ocean. We’ve barely swum a few feet. Explore His unending character, take new spiritual adventures. Study, serve, take risks. Grow.

치유받은 자 같이 살라

인도에 사는 두 자매는 태어날 때부터 앞이 보이지 않았습니다. 그들의 아버지는 열심히 일했지만 자매가 앞을 볼 수 있게 해줄 수술을 위한 비용을 마련할 수가 없었습니다. 그러던 중 단기 의료선교팀이 그 지역을 방문했습니다. 수술을 받은 다음날 간호사가 붕대를 풀자 두 자매는 환히 웃으며 그중 한 아이가 외쳤습니다. “엄마, 보여요! 이제 보여요!”

태어날 때부터 다리를 절었던 남자가 성전 입구의 늘 앉는 자리에 앉아 돈을 구걸하고 있었습니다. 베드로는 그에게 가진 돈은 없지만 그보다 더 귀한 것이 있다고 하면서 “나사렛 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 일어나 걸으라” (사도행전 3:6)고 했습니다. 그 사람은 “뛰어 일어나서 걸으며... 기뻐 뛰면서 하나님을 찬송했습니다”(8절).

앞을 보지 못했던 자매와 다리를 절었던 남자는 눈에 문제가 없거나 다리가 불편하지 않은 보통 사람들보다 자신의 보이는 눈과 걷는 다리에 더 많이 감사했습니다. 자매는 놀라움과 기쁨에 벅차 계속 눈을 깜박거렸고, 그 남자는 “뛰어 일어섰습니다.”

당신이 지닌 타고난 능력을 생각해 보십시오. 만약 과거에 기적적으로 치유를 받아 그 능력을 갖게 되었다면, 당신은 그 능력을 얼마나 더 즐길 수 있으며 또 어떻게 다르게 사용할 수 있을까요? 이제 이렇게 한번 생각해 보십시오. 당신이 예수님을 믿음으로 영적으로 치유를 받은 것입니다. 예수님은 당신을 죄에서 구원해 주신 것입니다.

LIVE LIKE YOU’RE HEALED

Two sisters from India were born blind. Their father was a hard-working provider, but he could never afford the surgery that would give them sight. Then a team of doctors came to their region on a short-term medical mission. The morning after their surgery, the girls smiled wide as the nurse unwrapped their bandages. One exclaimed, “Mother, I can see! I can see!”

A man who had been lame since birth sat in his usual spot at a temple gate, begging for money. Peter told the man he didn’t have coins, but he had something better. “In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk” (ACTS 3:6), he said. The man “jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went . . . jumping, and praising God” (V. 8).

The sisters and the man appreciated their eyes and legs more than those who were never blind or lame. The girls couldn’t stop blinking in amazement and celebration, and the man “jumped to his feet.”

Consider your own natural abilities. How might you enjoy these abilities more, and how might you use them differently, if you had been miraculously healed? Now consider this. If you believe in Jesus, He’s healed you spiritually. He’s rescued you from your sins.

Let’s thank the One who made and saved us and dedicate all that He gave us to Him.

나를 살피시는 하나님

싱글맘으로 두 아이를 키우는 친구 알마는 이른 아침에 힘든 시간을 가질 때가 많습니다. “적막할 때면 걱정거리가 떠올라요. 집안 일을 할 때도 경제적인 문제나 아이들의 건강과 학업에 대한 생각을 해요.” 라고 알마는 얘기합니다.

남편에게 버림받은 후 알마는 혼자서 아이들의 양육을 책임져야 했습니다. 알마는 이렇게 말합니다. “힘들어요. 하지만 하나님께서 나와 내 가족을 살피시는 것을 알고 있어요. 내가 두 직장에서 일할 수 있도록 힘주시고, 우리의 필요도 채워 주시고, 또 아이들이 하나님의 인도하심을 매일 경험하게 해주시지요.”

애굽 출신 여종이었던 하갈은 하나님의 살피심을 받는 의미를 잘 이해하고 있었습니다. 아브람의 아이를 임신한 후 사래를 멸시하기 시작하다가(창세기 16:4), 결국 사래에게 학대를 당하면서 사막으로 도망쳤습니다. 하갈은 뱃속 아이와 자신이 겪을 암울하고 절망스러운 미래를 앞둔 자신의 모습을 홀로 마주해야 했습니다.

그런데 그 사막에서 “여호와의 사자”(7절)가 나타나 “여호와께서 네 고통을 들으셨다”(11절)고 말했습니다. 여호와의 사자는 하갈에게 어떻게 할 지를 알려주며 앞으로 있을 일에 대해 안심시켜 주었습니다. 하갈을 통해 우리는 하나님의 이름 중 하나인 엘 로이(El Roi), 곧 “나를 살피시는 하나님”(13절) 에 대해 배우게 됩니다.

우리도 하갈처럼 길을 잃고 외로움 속에 고된 여정을 지나고 있을지 모릅니다. 하지만 하나님은 황무지 속에서도 우리를 살피신다는 것을 기억하십시오. 그분께 나아가 그분의 인도하심을 신뢰하시기 바랍니다.

GOD SEES YOU

Early mornings can be painful for my friend Alma, a single mom of two. She says, “When everything is quiet, worries surface. As I do household chores, I think about our financial concerns and the kids’ health and studies.”

When her husband abandoned her, Alma bore the responsibility of raising her children on her own. “It’s difficult,” she says, “but I know God sees me and my family. He gives me the strength to work two jobs, provides for our needs, and lets my kids experience His guidance each day.”

Hagar, an Egyptian maidservant, understood what it meant to be seen by God. After she got pregnant by Abram, she began to despise Sarai (GENESIS 16:4), who in turn mistreated her, causing Hagar to flee to the desert. Hagar found herself alone, facing a future that seemed bleak and hopeless for her and her unborn child.

But it was in the desert that “the angel of the Lord” (V. 7) met her and said, “The Lord has heard of your misery” (V. 11). The angel of God gave Hagar guidance on what to do, and He assured her of what the future would hold. From her we learn one of the names of God—El Roi, “the God who sees me” (V. 13).

Like Hagar, you may be on a difficult journey—feeling lost and alone. But remember that even in the wasteland, God sees you. Reach out to Him and trust Him to guide you through.

제니퍼는 2021년에 스쿠버 다이빙을 하던 중 강바닥에 놓인 작은 녹색 병에 눈이 꽂혔습니다. 그녀는 이 “일생일대의 발견”을 건져 올렸습니다. 그 병 안에는 놀랍게도 1926년에 한 젊은 남자가 자신의 18세 생일에 쓴 편지가 들어 있었습니다! 내용 중에는 누가 그 편지를 발견하든지 그것을 자신에게 돌려 달라는 요청이 쓰여 있었습니다. 제니퍼는 페이스북을 이용해 기쁨에 찬 그 남자의 가족 중 한 사람을 찾을 수 있었습니다. 편지의 주인은 1995년에 사망했지만, 한때 숨겨져 있었던 그의 편지는 제니퍼는 물론, 그 남자의 가족에게 큰 기쁨을 가져다주었습니다.

열왕기하 22장 8절에는 힐기야가 “여호와의 성전에서 율법책을 발견” 하는 놀라운 광경이 기록되어 있습니다. 대제사장 힐기야가 신명기로 보이는 책을 발견한 것입니다. 왕은 “율법책이란 말을 듣자” 깊이 감동을 받으면서도 아주 괴로워했습니다(11절). 당시 백성들은 마치 유다의 성전 모습과도 같이 하나님은 물론 그분의 영감으로 쓰인 말씀을 읽고 순종하는 일을 등한시하고 있었던 것입니다. 왕은 회개하며 나라를 위한 개혁을 실행하면서 성전에서 우상과 하나님을 기쁘시게 하지 않는 것들을 다 쓸어버렸습니다(23:1-24).

오늘날 우리가 가진 성경에는 신명기를 포함하여 하나님의 지혜와 교훈을 보여주는 66권의 책이 있습니다. 성경을 읽고 들으면서 성령님께서 우리의 마음을 변화시켜 우리의 삶을 바로 고쳐 주시기를 바랍니다. 삶을 변화시키는 성경 이야기 속으로 빠져들어가서 일평생 탐구할 지혜를 찾으십시오!

WHAT A FIND!

While scuba diving in 2021, Jennifer’s eyes fixed on a small, green bottle at the bottom of a river. She scooped up what she describes as “a once-in-a-lifetime find.” The bottle contained a message written by a young man on his eighteenth birthday in 1926! The words requested that whoever discovered the message return it to him. Jennifer used Facebook to locate a delighted family member of the man. Although he’d died in 1995, his once-hidden note brought joy to Jennifer and the man’s family.

In 2 Kings 22:8, we read that Hilkiah made an extraordinary find when he “found the Book of the Law in the temple of the Lord.” The high priest found what was likely the book of Deuteronomy. “When the king heard the words of the Book of the Law,” he was both deeply moved and greatly distressed (V. 11). Like the temple in Judah itself, God and the reading of and obedience to the Scriptures He’d inspired had been neglected by the people. In repentance, the king had the temple swept clean of idols and anything that would displease God as he instituted reforms for his nation (23:1–24).

Today, our Bibles contain sixty-six books that reveal God’s wisdom and instruction—including Deuteronomy. As we read and listen to them, may the Holy Spirit transform our minds and reform our ways. Dive into the life-changing story of Scripture today and find wisdom to explore for a lifetime!

과자로부터 배운 겸손

한 미국 선교사는 작은 과자 봉지를 통해 큰 교훈을 얻었습니다. 도미니카 공화국에서 사역을 하던 그 선교사가 어느 날 저녁 교회 모임에서 과자 봉지를 여는 순간 잘 알지도 못하는 여인이 손을 뻗어 그 봉지에서 과자를 집어갔습니다. 곧이어 다른 사람들도 그렇게 했습니다.

‘저렇게 무례할 수가’라고 선교사는 생각했습니다. 하지만 곧 자신의 생각을 부끄럽게 여겼습니다. 자신이 섬기기로 한 그 지역의 문화를 아직 올바로 이해하지 못했던 것입니다. 개인주의를 강조하는 미국과 달리 도미니카 공화국에서는 삶의 모든 것이 공동체 중심이었습니다. 음식과 물건을 나누는 것이 다른 사람과 서로 관계를 맺는 하나의 방식이었던 것입니다. 그 선교사의 방식이 더 나은 것이 아닌, 그저 다른 것일 뿐이었습니다. 그리고 “이런 나의 모습을 깨닫게 되어 무척 부끄러웠다”고 고백했습니다. 자신의 편견을 인식한 그 선교사는 겸손히 다른 이들과 나누는 것이 그들을 더 잘 섬기는 방법이라는 것도 알게 되었습니다.

베드로는 교회의 지도자들에게 다른 이들을 겸손으로 대하라는 이 교훈을 가르쳤습니다. 그는 장로들에게 “맡겨진 양떼를 지배하려” 들지 말라고 권고했습니다(베드로전서 5:3, 현대인의 성경). 또한 젊은이들에게는 “장로들에게 순종하고 다 서로 겸손으로 허리를 동이라”(5절)고 했습니다. 그가 선포한 것처럼 “하나님은 교만한 자를 대적하시되 겸손한 자들에게는 은혜를 주십니다.” 그러므로 “하나님의 능하신 손 아래에서 겸손하십시오. 때가 되면 여러분을 높이실 것입니다”(6절). 하나님께서 오늘 우리를 그분과 다른 이들 앞에서 겸손히 살도록 도와주시기를 간구합니다.

A HUMBLE SNACK

The bag of snack chips was small, but it taught an American missionary a big lesson. Working one evening in the Dominican Republic, she arrived at a church meeting and opened her chips when a woman she hardly knew reached and grabbed a few from the bag. Others helped themselves, too.

How rude, the missionary thought. Then she realized a humbling lesson. She didn’t yet understand the culture where she’d agreed to serve. Rather than emphasizing individualism, as in the United States, she learned that life in the Dominican Republic is lived in community. Sharing one’s food and goods is how people relate to each other. Her way wasn’t better, just different. She confessed, “It was very humbling to discover these things about me.” As she began to recognize her own biases, she also learned that humbly sharing with others helped her serve them better.

Peter taught this lesson to church leaders: treat others with humility. He counseled the elders to resist “lording it over those entrusted to you” (1 PETER 5:3). And those younger? “Submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility” (V. 5). As he declared: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” Therefore, “humble yourselves under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time” (V. 6). May He help us humbly live before Him and others today.

원치 않는 손님

카일과 앨리슨은 이색적인 장소에서 멋진 신혼여행을 보냈습니다. 하지만 집에 돌아와보니 카일의 발에 가려운 이상한 발진이 생긴 것을 알게 되었습니다. 부부가 감염병 전문의를 찾아가자, 의사는 카일의 새 슬리퍼 때문에 생긴 물집을 통해 작은 기생충이 발 속으로 파고들어서 그렇다고 말해주었습니다. 꿈 같은 휴가로 시작된 신혼여행 끝에 원치 않은 기생충 “손님”과의 힘든 싸움을 하게 되었습니다.

다윗은 죄와 싸우기 위해 하나님께 도움을 구하지 않으면 자신이 꿈꾸는 하나님 앞에서의 즐거운 삶도 죄와 반항이라는 원치 않는 손님과의 싸움으로 바뀔 거라는 것을 알았습니다. 다윗은 하나님이 자연 세계 속에 자신을 드러내시며(시편 19:1-6) 하나님의 가르침 속에 그분의 지혜가 담겨 있다는 (7-10절) 사실을 선포한 후, 경솔함과 교만, 고의적인 불순종으로부터 자기를 지켜 달라고 하나님께 간구했습니다. “나를 숨은 허물에서 벗어나게 하소서 또 주의 종에게 고의로 죄를 짓지 말게 하소서”(12-13절). 그는 죄라는 감염병에서 자신을 지켜낼 인간적인 방법이 없다는 것을 알았기 때문에 지혜롭게 하나님께 도움을 간구했습니다.

하나님을 영화롭게 하는 삶을 살려고 하는 우리의 꿈이 죄에 사로잡히지 않도록 하려면 어떻게 해야 할까요? 계속해서 우리의 눈을 하나님께로 향하고, 죄를 고백하고 회개하며, 하나님의 도움을 구함으로써 원치 않는 영적 기생충이 우리의 삶에 파고들지 않게 합시다.

UNWANTED GUESTS

Kyle and Allison had a wonderful honeymoon in an exotic location. When they returned home, however, they discovered that Kyle’s feet had developed a strange, itchy rash. The couple was referred to an infectious disease specialist. He informed them that small parasites had burrowed their way into Kyle’s feet through blisters caused by his new flip flops. What started out as a dream vacation ended in a challenging battle with unwanted “guests.”

David knew that if he didn’t ask God for help to fight sin, his dream of living a pleasing life before Him would turn into a battle with the unwanted guests of sin and rebellion. After declaring how God is revealed in the natural world (PSALM 19:1–6) and His wisdom found in His instruction (VV. 7–10), David asked God to protect him from inadvertent, arrogant, and deliberate disobedience. “Forgive my hidden faults. Keep your servant also from willful sins,” he wrote (VV. 12–13). He recognized that he didn’t have the human resources to keep the infectious disease of sin from affecting him. So, he wisely asked God for help.

How can we make sure our dream of living in a way that honors God doesn’t become hijacked by sin? Let’s keep our eyes on Him, confess and repent of our sin, and seek divine help in keeping unwanted spiritual parasites from burrowing into our lives.

은혜로운 여행

미국 남서부 애리조나 주에 있는 칙칙한 도시 왜(Why)라는 곳에서 여행을 시작한다고 생각해 봅시다. 대륙을 가로질러 가다 보면 텍사스 주의 불확실(Uncertain)이라는 도시를 지나게 됩니다. 거기서 북동쪽으로 방향을 틀어 테네시 주의 음울(Dismal)이라는 도시에서 잠시 쉬고 마침내 목적지인 펜실베이니아 주의 공황(Panic)이라는 도시에 도착하게 됩니다. 이 도시들은 여행 목적지로 정하기에는 전혀 적절하지 않을 것 같지만 미국에 실제로 존재하는 곳들입니다.

때로는 삶의 여정도 정확히 이와 같이 느껴질 때가 있습니다. 우리는 이스라엘 백성들이 광야에서 힘들게 살았던 것을 보면서(신명기 2:7) 삶이 힘들 수 있다는 것을 쉽게 공감합니다. 그런데 그와 비슷한 또 다른 여정을 알고 있나요? 우리는 하나님의 길을 벗어나 우리 자신의 여정을 계획하고 (1:42-43), 이스라엘 백성들처럼 우리의 필요를 채우는 데에만 급급하여 자주 불평합니다(민수기 14:2). 그리고 매일 불안과 초조 속에 그들처럼 하나님의 목적을 의심하기도 합니다(11절). 이스라엘 백성들의 이야기는 우리 자신의 삶 속에 끊임없이 반복되고 있습니다.

하나님은 우리가 그분의 길을 좇으면 음울한(Dismal) 곳보다 훨씬 더 좋은 곳으로 우리를 인도하실 거라고 확언해 주십니다. 하나님은 우리에게 진정 필요한 것들을 부족함 없이 채워 주실 것입니다(신명기 2:7; 빌립보서 4:19). 하지만 우리는 이런 사실을 이미 알면서도 그대로 실행하지 못할 때가 많습니다. 우리는 하나님이 정해주신 길을 따라가야 합니다.

조금 더 운전을 해야 하지만, 공황(Panic)에서 차로 6시간가량 더 가면 웨스트버지니아 주의 보장(Assurance)이라는 곳에 다다를 수 있습니다. 하나님께서 우리의 길을 이끄시도록 맡겨드릴 때(시편 119:35) 우리는 정말 보장된 축복 속에서 운전대를 잡으신 그분과 함께 즐거운 여행을 하게 될 것입니다.

TRAVELING MERCIES

You might start your journey in the southwest United States in a dusty town called Why, Arizona. Heading cross-country would take you through Uncertain, Texas. Bearing northeast, you’d make a rest stop in Dismal, Tennessee. Ultimately, you’d reach your destination—Panic, Pennsylvania. These are real places across the landscape of America, though not likely a trip you’d ever choose to take.

Sometimes this is exactly what the journey of life feels like. We easily identify with the Israelites’ tough life in the wilderness (DEUTERONOMY 2:7)—life can be hard. But do we see the other parallels? We create our own itinerary, turning from God’s way (1:42–43). Like the Israelites, we often grumble about getting our needs met (NUMBERS 14:2). In our daily fretting, we likewise doubt God’s purposes (V. 11). The story of the Israelites is repeated over and over in our own.

God assures us that if we follow His path, He’ll deliver us into a far better place than Dismal. He’ll provide and we’ll lack nothing we really need (DEUTERONOMY 2:7; PHILIPPIANS 4:19). Yet as much as we already know this, we often fail to do it. We need to follow God’s roadmap.

It’s a bit more of a drive, but another six hours by car would take you from the town of Panic to the place known as Assurance, West Virginia. If we let God direct our paths (PSALM 119:35), we’ll journey in joy with Him at the wheel—blessed assurance indeed!
