할 수 있어!

격려는 마치 산소와 같아서 우리는 이것 없이는 살 수 없습니다. 이 말은 아홉 살 소년 제임스 새비지에게도 해당됩니다. 이 소년은 샌프란시스코 해안에서 알카트라즈 섬까지 왕복 2마일 이상을 헤엄치는 최연소 기록을 경신했습니다. 수영을 시작하고 처음 삼십 분 동안은 거칠고 차가운 파도 때문에 제임스는 포기하고 싶었습니다. 그때 카누를 타던 사람들이 “할 수 있어!”라고 외쳤습니다. 그 말에 힘을 얻어 제임스는 목표를 달성할 수 있었습니다.

거칠고 차가운 파도와 같은 시련 때문에 예수를 믿던 사람들이 믿음을 포기하려고 할 때, 바울과 바나바는 그들이 믿음의 길을 계속 가도록 격려했습니다. 더베에서 복음을 전한 뒤 사도들은 “루스드라와 이고니온과 안디옥으로 돌아가서 제자들의 마음을 굳게 하여 이 믿음에 머물러 있으라 권하였습니다”(사도행전 14:21-22). 사도들은 성도들이 예수님에 대한 믿음 가운데 확고히 설 수 있도록 도왔습니다. 고난으로 인해 연약해졌지만 그 격려의 말은 그리스도를 위해 살고자 하는 성도들의 결의를 더욱 강하게 했습니다. 그들은 하나님의 능력으로 계속 나아갈 수 있다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 결국 그들은 바울과 바나바의 도움을 받아 “하나님의 나라에 들어가려면 많은 환난을 겪어야 할 것”(22절)을 이해했습니다.

예수님을 위해 사는 것은 힘들고, 그래서 우리는 이따금 포기하고 싶은 유혹을 받습니다. 다행스럽게도 예수님과 동료 성도들이 우리가 계속 나아갈 수 있도록 격려해 줄 수 있습니다. 주님과 함께라면 우리는 할 수 있습니다!

YOU CAN DO IT!

Encouragement is like oxygen—we can’t live without it. This was true for nine-year-old James Savage. The boy swam more than two miles from the San Francisco shoreline to Alcatraz Island and back, breaking the record for the youngest person to accomplish the feat. But thirty minutes into the swim, the choppy, frigid waters made James want to quit. However, a fleet of paddlers called out, “You can do it!” The words gave him the boost he needed to finish his goal.

When the choppy, frigid waters of tribulation made believers in Jesus want to give up, Paul and Barnabas encouraged them to continue their journey. After the apostles preached the gospel in the city of Derbe, they “returned to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch, strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith” (ACTS 14:21–22). They helped the believers to remain firm in their faith in Jesus. Troubles had weakened them, but words of encouragement strengthened their resolve to live for Christ. In God’s strength, they realized they could keep pressing on. Finally, Paul and Barnabas helped them understand that they would “go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God” (V. 22).

Living for Jesus can be difficult, and we’re sometimes tempted to give up. Fortunately, Jesus and fellow believers in Him can provide the encouragement we need to press on. With Him, we can do it!

지혜와 명철

1373년 노리치의 줄리안이 30세 되던 해에 병들어 거의 죽게 되었습니다. 그녀는 목사님과 함께 기도하면서 예수님의 십자가 처형이라고 생각되는 여러 가지 환상을 체험했습니다. 기적적으로 건강을 되찾은 후 그녀는 20년 동안 교회의 작은 골방에서 그때의 십자가 환상 경험을 묵상하고 기도하며 홀로 지냈습니다. 그녀의 결론은 “주님이 의미하는 것은 사랑이었다”라는 것이었습니다. 즉 그리스도의 희생이야말로 하나님 사랑의 최상의 증표라는 것입니다.

줄리안의 계시는 유명합니다. 하지만 사람들이 흔히 간과하는 것은 하나님이 그에게 보여준 환상의 의미를 알아내기 위해 기도하는 마음으로 지낸 시간과 노력입니다. 무려 20년 동안 주님께 지혜와 도우심을 구하며 주님이 임재하신 그 체험이 무엇을 뜻하는지 분명히 알기 위해 노력한 것입니다.

하나님은 줄리안에게 하신 것처럼 그의 백성들에게 은혜롭게 자신을 드러내십니다. 때로는 성경 말씀, 때로는 고요하고 낮은 목소리, 또는 찬송의 후렴, 혹은 한순간 주님의 임재를 느끼게 하는 것 등을 통해서 말입니다. 이런 일이 일어날 때 우리는 주님의 지혜와 도우심을 구할 수 있습니다. 이 지혜는 바로 솔로몬 왕이 아들에게, 그의 귀를 지혜에 기울이며 그의 마음을 명철에 두어 따르라고 교훈했던 그 지혜입니다(잠언 2:2). 그리하면 아들이 “하나님을 알게 되리라”고 했습니다(5절).

하나님은 우리에게 분별력과 명철을 주신다고 약속하십니다. 주님의 성품과 뜻을 아는 지혜가 더욱 깊어질 때 우리는 주님을 경외하고 보다 더 이해할 수 있습니다.

WISDOM AND UNDERSTANDING

In 1373, when Julian of Norwich was thirty years old, she became ill and nearly died. When her minister prayed with her, she experienced a number of visions in which she considered Jesus’ crucifixion. After miraculously recovering her health, she spent the next twenty years living in solitude in a side room of the church, praying over and thinking through the experience. She concluded that “love was his meaning”; that is, that Christ’s sacrifice is the supreme manifestation of God’s love.

Julian’s revelations are famous, but what people often overlook is the time and effort she spent prayerfully working out what God revealed to her. In those two decades, she sought to discern what this experience of His presence meant as she asked Him for His wisdom and help.

As He did with Julian, God graciously reveals Himself to His people, such as through the words of the Bible; through His still, small voice; through a refrain of a hymn; or even just an awareness of His presence. When this happens, we can seek His wisdom and help. This wisdom is what King Solomon instructed his son to pursue, saying he should turn his ear to wisdom and apply his heart to understanding (PROVERBS 2:2). Then he would “find the knowledge of God” (V. 5).

God promises to give us discernment and understanding. As we grow in a deeper knowledge of His character and ways, we can honor and understand Him more.

더 위대한 사랑은 없다

2019년에 있었던 노르망디 상륙작전 75주년 기념행사에서 서유럽 해방을 위해 역사상 가장 큰 상륙작전에 참전했던 156,000명 이상의 군인들을 기렸습니다. 루즈벨트 대통령은 1944년 6월 6일 라디오 방송에서 이렇게 기도하며 하나님의 가호를 빌었습니다. “그들은 정복의 욕망을 위해 싸우는 것이 아닙니다. 그들은 정복을 끝내기 위해 싸웁니다. 해방하기 위해 싸웁니다.”

악을 물리치고 억압받는 자들을 해방시키기 위해 기꺼이 자신의 위험을 감수하는 것은 “사람이 친구를 위하여 자기 목숨을 버리면 이보다 더 큰 사랑이 없다”(요한복음 15:13)고 하신 예수님의 말씀을 떠올리게 합니다. 이 말씀은 예수님이 제자들에게 서로 사랑하라고 가르치시는 중에 하셨습니다. 그러면서 예수님은 제자들이 남을 위해 자신의 삶을 기꺼이 희생하는, 그런 사랑의 대가와 깊이를 깨닫기 바라셨습니다. 예수님이 남을 희생적으로 사랑하라고 하신 이 말씀은 “서로 사랑하라”(17절)고 하신 명령의 바탕입니다.

우리는 연로하신 가족을 돌보는 데 시간을 할애함으로써 희생적인 사랑을 할 수 있습니다. 형제자매가 학업으로 스트레스를 많이 받는 동안 그들의 허드렛일을 해서 도울 수 있습니다. 또한, 배우자가 잠을 잘 수 있도록 아픈 아이를 대신 돌볼 수도 있습니다. 우리가 희생적으로 사랑할 때 우리는 사랑을 가장 위대하게 표현하는 것입니다.

NO GREATER LOVE

Commemorations of the seventy-fifth anniversary of D-Day in 2019 honored the more than 156,000 troops who took part in the largest seaborne invasion in history to liberate Western Europe. In his prayer broadcast over the radio on June 6, 1944, President Roosevelt asked for God’s protection, praying, “They fight not for the lust of conquest. They fight to end conquest. They fight to liberate.”

A willingness to put one’s self in harm’s way to restrain evil and liberate the oppressed brings to mind Jesus’ words: “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (JOHN 15:13). These words come in the midst of Christ teaching His followers to love each other. But He wanted them to understand the cost and depth of this type of love: a love exemplified when one willingly sacrifices his or her life for another person. Jesus’ call to sacrificially love others is the basis of His command to “love each other” (V. 17).

Perhaps we could show sacrificial love by giving time to care for the needs of an aging family member. We could put the needs of a sibling first by doing their chores during a stressful week at school. We might even take extra shifts with a sick child to allow our spouse to sleep. As we sacrificially love others, we demonstrate the greatest expression of love.

우리 마음을 아시는 주님

어떤 고객이 마트의 무인 계산대에서 계산을 마치고 떠난 후, 나는 그 계산대로 가서 물건들을 스캐너에 찍기 시작했습니다. 그때 화가 잔뜩 난 어떤 여자분이 갑자기 저를 막아섰습니다. 나는 사실 그분 차례였는지 몰랐습니다. 나는 실수를 깨닫고 그분에게 “미안합니다”라며 정중히 사과했습니다. 그러자 그녀는 “아니, 당신은 전혀 미안해하지 않아요!” (실제로는 훨씬 더 심한 표현을 썼지만)라고 대꾸했습니다.

당신은 실수를 한 다음 그것을 인정하고 그 실수를 바로잡으려 했지만 면박당한 적이 있습니까? 오해를 받거나 오판을 당하면 마음이 상합니다. 또한 우리가 마음을 상하게 한 사람, 또는 우리의 마음을 상하게 한 사람이 가까운 사람일 때 더 깊은 상처를 받습니다. 사람들이 우리 마음을 읽을 수 있다면 얼마나 좋을까요!

HE KNOWS MY HEART

After a customer at a grocery store self-checkout station had completed her transaction, I made my way to the station and proceeded to scan my goods. Unexpectedly, a visibly angry person confronted me. I’d failed to notice that she was actually next in line for checkout. Recognizing my mistake, I sincerely said, “I’m sorry.” She replied (though not limited to these words), “No, you’re not!”

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you were wrong, acknowledged it, and tried to make things right—only to be rebuffed? It doesn’t feel good to be misunderstood or misjudged, and the closer we are to those we offend or those who offend us, the more painful it is. How we wish they could see our hearts!

The prophet Isaiah’s snapshot in Isaiah 11:1–5 is that of a God-appointed ruler with wisdom for perfect judgment. “He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears; but with righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth” (VV. 3–4). This was fulfilled in the life and ministry of Jesus. Though in our sinfulness and weakness we don’t always get it right, we can take heart that the all-seeing, all-knowing God of heaven knows us fully and judges us rightly. - ARTHUR JACKSON

애니메이션 영화 속 동굴에 거하는 원시인 크루즈 가족은 “살아남을 수 있는 유일한 방법은 무리[그들의 작은 가족]가 함께 지내는 것”이라고 믿고 있습니다. 그들은 세상과 다른 사람들을 두려워했기 때문에 안전한 곳을 찾았는데, 그곳에 이미 낯선 가족이 살고 있다는 것을 알고는 두려움에 휩싸이게 됩니다. 그러나 크루즈 가족은 얼마 안 가서 새 이웃의 다른점들을 받아들일 수 있게 되고 그들로부터 힘을 얻고 함께 살아가게 됩니다. 그들은 실제로 이웃을 좋아한다는 것과 온전한 삶을 살기 위해 다른 사람들이 ‘필요하다’는 사실을 깨닫게 됩니다.

SURVIVING AND THRIVING

The Croods, an animated caveman family, believe that “the only way to survive is if the pack [their small family] stays together.” They’re afraid of the world and others, so when looking for a safe place to live they’re filled with fear after discovering a strange family already in the area they’ve chosen. But they soon learn to embrace the differences of their new neighbors, draw strength from them, and survive together. They find that they actually enjoy them and that they do need others to live life fully.

It can be risky to be in relationship—people can and do hurt us. Yet it’s for good reason God put His people together in a body, the church. In fellowship with others, we grow to maturity (EPHESIANS 4:13). We learn to depend on Him to help us be “humble and gentle” and “patient” (V. 2). We help each other by building each other up “in love” (V. 16). When we gather together, we use our gifts and learn from others who use theirs, which in turn equips us in our walk with God and service for Him.

As He leads you, look for your place among God’s people if you haven’t found it yet. You’ll do more than survive; in shared love you’ll bring honor to God and grow to be more like Jesus. And may we all depend on Him as we walk through a growing relationship with Jesus and others. - ANNE CETAS

천상에서의 성찬식

1969년 7월 20일 아폴로 11호의 달 착륙선 ‘이글’이 달 고요의 바다에 착륙했을 때, 우주여행자들은 달 표면에 발을 디디기 전 비행 중 쌓인 피로를 회복하기 위한 시간을 가졌습니다. 우주비행사 버즈 올드린은 허락을 받고 성찬식을 위해 빵과 포도주를 가져왔습니다. 성경을 읽은 후 올드린은 달에서 처음 먹는 음식을 맛보았고 나중에 이런 글을 남겼습니다. “나는 우리 교회에서 준 잔에 포도주를 따랐습니다. 달의 중력이 지구의 6 분의 1인 상태에서 포도주는 천천히 그리고 우아하게 잔을 채워갔습니다.” 천상에서의 성찬식을 누리며, 올드린은 그리스도의 십자가 희생에 대한 그의 믿음과 재림에 대한 확신을 선언한 것입니다.

CELESTIAL COMMUNION

When Apollo 11’s Eagle lunar module landed on the moon’s Sea of Tranquility on July 20, 1969, the space travelers took time to recover from their flight before stepping onto the moon’s surface. Astronaut Buzz Aldrin had received permission to bring bread and wine so he could take communion. After reading Scripture, he tasted the first foods ever consumed on the moon. Later, he wrote: “I poured the wine into the chalice our church had given me. In the one-sixth gravity of the moon the wine curled slowly and gracefully up the side of the cup.” As Aldrin enjoyed this celestial communion, his actions proclaimed his belief in Christ’s sacrifice on the cross and the guarantee of His second coming.

The apostle Paul encourages us to remember how Jesus sat with His disciples “on the night he was betrayed” (1 CORINTHIANS 11:23). Christ compared His soon-to-be sacrificed body to the bread (V. 24). He declared the wine as a symbol of “the new covenant” that secured our forgiveness and salvation through His blood shed on the cross (V. 25). Whenever and wherever we take communion, we’re proclaiming our trust in the reality of Jesus’ sacrifice and our hope in His promised second coming (V. 26).

No matter where we are, we can celebrate our faith in the one and only risen and returning Savior—Jesus Christ—with confidence.

나의 직업도 하나님을 위해

내가 기고하고 있던 잡지가 “중요하다”고 생각했던 나는 그 잡지의 고위 편집장에게 가능한 한 최상의 글을 보여주기 위해 무던히 애를 썼습니다. 그녀의 기준을 만족시켜야 한다는 압박감 속에서 나는 생각과 아이디어들을 계속 다시 고쳐 썼습니다. 그런데 무엇이 문제였을까요? 어려운 주제 때문이었을까요? 아니면 나의 진짜 걱정은 ‘편집자가 단지 내 글 뿐만 아니라 나를 인정해줄까?’ 하는 개인적인 것이었을까요?

바울은 직업과 관련된 염려에 대한 대답으로 믿을 만한 지침을 줍니다. 골로새 교회에 보내는 서신에서 그는 사람들의 인정을 받고자 하지 말고 하나님을 위해 일하라고 충고했습니다. 바울 사도는 이렇게 말했습니다. “무슨 일을 하든지 마음을 다하여 주께 하듯 하고 사람에게 하듯 하지 말라 이는 기업의 상을 주께 받을 줄 아나니 너희는 주 그리스도를 섬기느니라” (골로새서 3:23-24) .

바울의 지혜를 가슴에 새기며 우리는 상사의 눈에 들기 위해 애쓰는 것을 멈출 수 있습니다. 물론 우리는 직장 상사를 인간적으로 존중하며 그들에게 최선을 다하기 위해 노력합니다. 그러나 주님을 위해 하는 일을 주께서 인도하시고 기름 부어 주시도록 간구하면서 “주님을 위해 일한다면” 주님께서는 우리의 노력에 빛을 비추어 주실 것입니다. 그에 대한 우리의 보상은, 일에 대한 압박감에서 벗어나고 맡은 일을 완수하는 것입니다. 더 나아가 언젠가 주님께서 “잘했다” 하시는 말씀을 듣게 될 것입니다.

GIVING GOD MY WORK

The magazine I was writing for felt “important,” so I struggled to present the best possible article I could for the high-ranking editor. Feeling pressure to meet her standards, I kept rewriting my thoughts and ideas. But what was my problem? Was it my challenging topic? Or was my real worry personal: Would the editor approve of me and not just my words?

For answers to our job worries, Paul gives trustworthy instruction. In a letter to the Colossian church, Paul urged believers to work not for approval of people, but for God. As the apostle said, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving” (COLOSSIANS 3:23–24) .

Reflecting on Paul’s wisdom, we can stop struggling to look good in the eyes of our earthly bosses. For certain, we honor them as people and seek to give them our best. But if we work “as for the Lord”—asking Him to lead and anoint our work for Him—He’ll shine a light on our efforts. Our reward? Our job pressures ease and our assignments are completed. 죄로부터 도망쳐라

나는 이번 여름 두 번이나 옻이 올라 크게 고생했습니다. 두 번 다 우리 집 마당에서 잡초를 뽑다가 당한 일이었습니다. 그리고 두 번 다 그 세 갈래 잎의 고약한 방해꾼이 바로 근처에 은밀히 숨어 자라는 것을 보았습니다. 가까이 다가가도 큰 탈이 없을 거라 생각했습니다. 하지만 이내 그 생각이 잘못되었다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 그 조그만 녹색의 괴물 쪽으로 다가갈 것이 아니라 반대 방향으로 피해 갔어야 했습니다.

구약성경에 나오는 요셉의 이야기는 옻나무보다 더 나쁜 ‘죄’로부터 도망쳐야 한다는 원칙을 잘 보여줍니다. 요셉이 이집트 고위 관리인 보디발의 집에 살고 있을 때 그의 아내가 요셉을 유혹했습니다. 요셉은 그녀에게 가까이 가려 하지 않고 반대로 도망쳤습니다.

보디발의 아내는 요셉에게 누명을 씌워 감옥에 가뒀지만 요셉은 끝까지 순결함을 유지했습니다. 그리고 창세기 39장 21절에서 보듯 “여호와께서 요셉과 함께 하셨습니다.”

하나님은 우리를 그분으로부터 멀어지도록 만드는 행동이나 상황들을 피하도록 도우십니다. 죄가 다가올 때 다른 길로 도망할 수 있도록 인도하십니다. 디모데후서 2장 22절에서 바울은 “정욕을 피하라”고 기록하고 있고, 고린도전서 6장 18절에서는 “음행을 피하라”고 말하고 있습니다.

하나님의 능력 안에서 우리에게 해를 입힐 수 있는 것들로부터 도망치기를 바랍니다.

RUN FROM SIN

Twice this summer I suffered the scourge of poison ivy. Both times it happened, I was working on clearing away unwanted plant growth from our yard. And both times, I saw the nasty, three-leafed enemy lurking nearby. I figured I could get close to it without it affecting me. Soon enough, I realized I’d been wrong. Instead of getting nearer to my little green nemesis, I should have run the other way!

In the Old Testament story of Joseph, we see modeled the principle of running from something worse than poison ivy: sin. When he was living in the home of Egyptian official Potiphar, whose wife tried to seduce him, Joseph didn’t try to get close—he ran.

Although she falsely accused him and had him thrown in prison, Joseph remained pure throughout the episode. And as we see in Genesis 39:21, “The Lord was with him.”

God can help us flee activities and situations that could lead us away from Him—guiding us to run the other way when sin is nearby. In 2 Timothy 2:22, Paul writes, “Flee the evil desires.” And in 1 Corinthians 6:18, he says to “flee from sexual immorality.”

In God’s strength, may we choose to run from those things that could harm us. - DAVE BRANON

하나님의 친구의 친구

두사람이 같은 친구를 안다는 것을 알게 되면 첫 만남에서부터 매우 화기애애한 분위기가 될 수 있습니다. 집 주인이 어떤 손님을 아주 친절하게 환영하며 “만나서 반가워요. 샘의 친구나 사만타의 친구는 누구든 제 친구가 되죠.”라고 말한다면 참으로 기억에 남는 만남이 될 것입니다.

예수님도 비슷한 말씀을 하셨습니다. 그가 많은 사람들을 치유하자 군중들이 모여들었습니다. 그러나 동시에 예수님은 종교지도자들이 성전을 장사하는 집으로 만들고 그들의 영향력을 남용하는 것에 반대하심으로 적을 만들기도 하셨습니다. 갈등이 커지는 가운데서도 예수님은 그와 함께 하시는 기쁨과 대가, 경이로움을 배가시키기 위해 행동하셨습니다. 제자들에게 병을 고칠 수 있는 능력을 주셨고 하나님 나라가 가까이 왔다는 것을 선포하게 하셨습니다. 그분은 제자들에게 “누구든지 너희를 영접하는 자는 나를 영접하는 것이요” (마태복음 10:40) 그것이 또한 자신을 보내신 하나님 아버지를 영접하는 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다.

이보다 더 삶을 변화시키는 친구 사랑이 어디 있겠습니까! 예수님은 누구든지 자신의 집 대문을 열어 그의 제자들에게 냉수 한 컵이라도 권하는 사람은 하나님이 잊지 않으실 것이라 하였습니다. 이것은 오래전의 일이지만, 지금도 예수님은 우리가 크고 작은 친절과 돌봄을 실천하기로 한다면 하나님의 친구의 친구들로서 서로를 기쁨으로 맞이해주는 방법이 얼마든지 있다고 말씀하십니다.

A FRIEND OF GOD’S FRIENDS

Something so cordial can happen in first introductions when two persons discover that they have a friend in common. In what may be its most memorable form, a big-hearted host welcomes a guest with something like, “So nice to meet you. Any friend of Sam’s, or Samantha’s, is a friend of mine.”

Jesus said something similar. He’d been attracting crowds by healing many. But He’d also been making enemies of local religious leaders by disagreeing with the way they were commercializing the temple and misusing their influence. In the middle of a growing conflict, He made a move to multiply the joy, cost, and wonder of His presence. He gave His disciples the ability to heal others and sent them out to announce that the kingdom of God was at hand. He assured the disciples: “Anyone who welcomes you, welcomes me” (MATTHEW 10:40) , and, in turn, welcomes His Father who sent Him as well.

It’s hard to imagine a more life-changing offer of friendship. For anyone who would open their house, or even give a cup of cold water to one of His disciples, Jesus assured a place in the heart of God. While that moment happened a long time ago, His words remind us that in big and little acts of kindness and hospitality there are still ways of welcoming, and being welcomed, as a friend of the friends of God. - MART DEHAAN

하나님의 공급하심

세살 난 버디와 엄마는 매주 교회에 가서 식품 사역 트럭에서 식료품을 내리는 일을 도왔습니다. 버디는 엄마가 할머니에게 배달 트럭이 고장 났다고 말하는 것을 듣고, “아니, 그럼 음식 배달은 어떻게 하죠?”라고 물었습니다. 엄마는 교회가 새 트럭을 사기 위해 돈을 모아야 할 것이라고 설명하자, 버디는 미소를 지으며, “나도 돈 있어요.”라고 말하며 방을 나갔습니다. 그리고 알록달록한 스티커로 장식된 동전이 가득 들어있는 플라스틱 병을 가지고 돌아왔습니다. 거기에는 38달러가 조금 넘는 돈이 들어있었습니다. 버디의 돈은 많지 않았지만 하나님은 그가 내놓은 돈과 다른 사람들의 헌금을 합해서 새 냉장트럭을 공급해 주셔서 교회가 계속해서 지역 사회에 봉사할 수 있도록 하셨습니다.

적은 양이라도 모든 것을 하나님의 손에 맡길 때 항상 모든 것이 넘치도록 채워집니다. 열왕기하 4장에서 한 가난한 과부가 엘리사 선지자에게 경제적 지원을 요청했습니다. 그는 그녀에게 집에 남은 것이 얼마나 되는지 알아보고 이웃에게 도움을 요청한 다음 그의 지시를 따르라고 말했습니다 (1-4절) . 기적과도 같이 하나님은 과부의 소량의 기름을 사용하여 그녀가 이웃에게서 모은 모든 항아리를 채우게 하셨습니다 (5-6절) . 엘리사는 그녀에게 “기름을 팔아 빚을 갚고 남은 것으로 너와 네 아들이 생활하라” (7절) 고 하였습니다.

우리에게 없는 것에 집중하다 보면 하나님께서 우리에게 있는 것을 가지고 위대한 일을 하시는 것을 못 볼 수 있습니다.

GOD’S PROVISION

Three-year-old Buddy and his mom went to church each week to help unload groceries from the food ministry truck. When Buddy overheard his mom telling his grandmother that the delivery truck broke down, he said, “Oh, no. How will they do food ministry?” His mom explained that the church would have to raise money to buy a new truck. Buddy smiled. “I have money,” he said, leaving the room. He returned with a plastic jar decorated with colorful stickers and filled with coins, which amounted to a little over $38. Though Buddy didn’t have much, God combined his sacrificial offering with gifts from others to provide a new refrigerated truck, so that the church could continue serving their
community.

A small amount offered generously is always more than enough when placed in God’s hands. In 2 Kings 4, a poor widow asked the prophet Elisha for financial assistance. He told her to take inventory of her own resources, reach out to her neighbors for help, then follow his instructions (VV. 1–4) . In a miraculous display of provision, God used the widow’s small amount of oil to fill all the jars she collected from her neighbors (VV. 5–6) . Elisha told her, “Sell the oil and pay your debts. You and your sons can live on what is left” (V. 7) .

When we focus on what we don’t have, we risk missing out on watching God do great things with what we do have. - XOCHITL DIXON
