예수 안에서 얻은 새 DNA

골수 이식으로 새 생명을 얻은 크리스는 4년 후 다시 혈액 검사를 했습니다. 기증받은 골수가 치료에 도움을 주었지만, 다른 놀라운 사실이 발견되었습니다. 크리스의 혈액의 DNA가 크리스 본인의 것이 아니라 기증자의 것이라는 사실이었습니다. 그 수술의 목적이 문제가 있는 크리스의 혈액을 기증자의 건강한 혈액으로 바꾸는 것이었으니 그럴 수도 있겠지요. 그런데 크리스의 뺨, 입술, 혀에서 채취한 샘플에서도 기증자의 DNA 가 발견됐습니다. 이제 그는 자신의 기억, 외모, 그리고 원래의 DNA를 상당히 지니고 있다고 해도 어떤 면에서 다른 사람이 된 것입니다.

크리스의 이야기는 예수님 안에서 구원받은 사람의 삶에 일어나는 일과 매우 비슷합니다. 우리가 예수님을 믿고 영적으로 변화될 때 새로운 피조물이 됩니다 (고린도후서 5:17) . 바울은 에베소 교회에 보내는 편지에서 그러한 내적인 변화를 드러내고, 예전의 생활 방식을 따르는 “옛 사람을 벗어 버리고 하나님을 따라 의와 진리의 거룩함으로 지으심을 받은 새 사람을 입으라” (에베소서 4:22,24) 고 권면했습니다. 그리스도를 위해 구별되라는 것입니다.

예수님의 변화시키시는 능력이 우리 안에 살아있음을 보여주려고 DNA 샘플 채취나 혈액 검사를 할 필요는 없습니다. 그러한 내면세계는 우리가 세상 속에 살면서 나타나야 하며, 얼마나 “서로 친절하게 하며 불쌍히 여기며 서로 용서하기를 하나님이 그리스도 안에서 [우리를] 용서하심과 같이” 하는지를 보여야 하는 것입니다 (32절) .

NEW DNA IN JESUS

Chris had his blood retested four years after his lifesaving bone marrow transplant. The donor’s marrow had provided what was needed to cure him but had left a surprise: the DNA in Chris’ blood was that of his donor, not his own. It makes sense, really: the goal of the procedure was to replace the weakened blood with a donor’s healthy blood. Yet even swabs of Chris’ cheeks, lips, and tongue showed the donor’s DNA. In some ways, he’d become someone else—though he retained his own memories, outward appearance, and some of his original DNA.

Chris’ experience bears a striking resemblance to what happens in the life of a person who receives salvation in Jesus. At the point of our spiritual transformation—when we trust in Jesus—we become a new creation (2 CORINTHIANS 5:17) . Paul’s letter to the church in Ephesus encouraged them to reveal that inward transformation, to “put off [their] old self” with its way of living and to “put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness” (EPHESIANS 4:22, 24) . To be set apart for Christ.

We don’t need DNA swabs or blood tests to show that the transforming power of Jesus is alive within us. That inward reality should be evident in the way we engage with the world around us, revealing how we’re “kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave [us]” (V. 32) . - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

사람에게 투자하기

어떤 회사에서 자기들 식료품 중 하나를 열 번 구매할 때마다 1000마일의 마일리지를 주겠다고 하자 한 남성은 그중 가장 저렴한 제품이 개별 포장된 초콜릿 푸딩이라는 것을 알고 12,000개 넘게 구입을 했습니다. 그는 3,000달러로 골드 등급을 얻고 자신과 가족이 평생 사용할 수 있는 항공 마일리지를 받았습니다. 그는 또한 푸딩을 자선 단체에 기부하여 800달러의 세금을 공제받았습니다. 정말 천재입니다!

이 재물은 무엇입니까? 예수님은“구제하여 낡아지지 아니하는 배낭을 만들라 곧 하늘에 둔 바 다함이 없는 보물이니 거기는 도둑도 가까이 하는 일이 없고 좀도 먹는 일이 없느니라”고 말씀하셨습니다 (12:33) . 우리가 투자로 구원을 얻는 것은 아니지만 “너희 보물이 있는 곳에는 너희 마음도 있다” (34 절) 는 사실을 확인할 수 있습니다.

INVESTING IN OTHERS

When a corporation offered one thousand frequent-flier miles for every ten purchases of one of their foods, one man realized their cheapest product was individual cups of chocolate pudding. He bought more than twelve thousand.
For $3,000, he received gold status and a lifetime supply of air miles for himself and his family. He also donated the pudding to charity, which netted him an $800 tax write-off. Genius!

Jesus told a controversial parable about a cunning manager who, as he was being fired, reduced what debtors owed his master. The man knew he could rely on their help later for the favor he was doing them now. Jesus wasn’t praising the manager’s unethical business practice, but He knew we could learn from his ingenuity. Jesus said we should shrewdly “use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings” (LUKE 16:9) . As “the pudding guy” turned twenty-five cent desserts into flights, so we may use our “worldly wealth” to gain “true riches” (V. 11) .

What are these riches? Jesus said, “Give to the poor” and you will “provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a trea- sure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys” (12:33) . Our nvestment doesn’t earn our salvation, but it does affirm it, “for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (V. 34) . - MIKE WITTMER

교만과 속임수

‘사랑의 하나님, 따뜻하고 부드럽게 잘못을 바로잡아 주셔서 감사합니다.’ 나는 어깨가 축 처진 채로 그 힘든 말을 중얼거렸습니다. ‘저는 너무 교만해서 혼자서 모든 것을 할 수 있다고 생각했습니다.’ 직장에서 몇 달 동안 프로젝트를 성공시켰고 그로 인해 칭찬을 받으면서 나의 능력을 신뢰하고 하나님의 인도하심을 외면했습니다. 그러나 어려운 프로젝트를 맡으면서 내가 생각만큼 똑똑하지 않다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 그동안 나의 교만함으로 하나님의 도움이 필요하지 않다고 스스로를 속인 것입니다.

강대했던 에돔 왕국은 교만 때문에 하나님께 징계를 받았습니다. 에돔은 산간 지역에 위치하여 적이 침입할 수 없을 것처럼 보였습니다 (오바댜 1:3) . 또한 에돔은 전략적으로 중요한 교역로의 중심에 위치하고 고대 세계에서 매우 가치 있는 상품인 구리가 풍부한 부유한 국가였습니다. 좋은 것들로 가득하고 자부심 또한 넘쳤습니다. 에돔 사람들은 하나님의 백성을 억압하면서도 아무도 그들의 왕국을 꺾을 수 없다고 믿었습니다 (10-14절) . 그러나 하나님께서는 오바댜 선지자를 통해 나라들은 에돔에 맞서 일어날 것이며 한때 강력했던 왕국은 싸울 힘을 잃고 치욕을 당할 것이라고 심판의 말씀을 하셨습니다 (1-2절) .

교만은 우리를 속여 하나님 없이도 우리의 방식대로 살 수 있다고 생각하게 만듭니다. 권위와 훈계와 자신의 부족한 부분도 대수롭지 않게 여기게 만듭니다. 그러나 하나님은 그분 앞에서 우리를 낮추라고 말씀하십니다 (베드로전서 5:6) . 교만한 마음을 버리고 회개하고 돌아서면 하나님은 우리를 인도하여 그분을 온전히 신뢰하게 하실 것입니다.

PRIDE AND DECEPTION

Loving God, thank You for Your gentle, nudging correction. With my shoulders slumped, I murmured those difficult words. I’ve been so arrogant, thinking I could do it all on my own. For months, I’d been enjoying successful work projects, and the accolades lulled me into trusting my capabilities and rejecting God’s leading. It took a challenging project for me to realize I wasn’t as smart as I thought. My proud heart had deceived me into believing I didn’t need God’s help.

The powerful kingdom of Edom received discipline from God for its pride. Edom was located amid mountainous terrain, making her seemingly invulnerable to enemies (OBADIAH 1:3) . Edom was also a wealthy nation, situated at the center of strategic trade routes and rich in copper, a highly valued commodity in the ancient world. It was full of good things yet also full of pride. Its citizens believed their kingdom was invincible, even as they oppressed God’s people (VV. 10–14) . But God used the prophet Obadiah to tell them of His judgment. Nations would rise up against Edom, and the once-powerful kingdom would be defenseless and humiliated (VV. 1–2) .

Pride deceives us into thinking we can live life on our terms, without God. It makes us feel invulnerable to authority, correction, and weakness. But God calls us to humble ourselves before Him (1 PETER 5:6) . As we turn from our pride and choose repentance, God will guide us toward total trust in Him. - KAREN HUANG

하나님의 도우심

나는 한 사업가가 대학 시절에 우울증으로 인해 종종 “무력함과 절망감” 을 느꼈다고 이야기하는 것을 들었습니다. 그는 안타깝게도 이러한 감정에 대해 의사와 상담한 적이 없었으며 대신 지역 도서관에서 자살에 관한 책을 주문하고 죽을 날짜를 정하는 등 더욱 극단적인 계획을 세우기 시작했다고 했습니다.

나는 그 학생이 행운이나 우연으로 죽음을 면했다고 생각하지 않습니다. 그것이 우리가 필요할 때 주시는 빵과 물이든, 아니면 적시에 일어난 주소의 착오이든, 어떤 신비한 개입이 우리의 생명을 구한다면 우리는 하나님의 도우심을 경험한 것입니다.

DIVINE TENDERNESS

I once heard a businessman describe his years in college as a time when he often felt “helpless and hopeless” from bouts of depression. Sadly, he never talked to a doctor about these feelings, but instead started making more drastic plans—ordering a book on suicide from his local library and setting a date to take his life.

God cares for the helpless and hopeless. We see this in His treatment of biblical characters during their own dark times. When Jonah wanted to die, God engaged him in tender conversation (JONAH 4:3–10) . When Elijah asked God to take his life (1 KINGS 19:4) , God provided bread and water to refresh him (VV. 5–9), spoke gently to him (VV. 11–13) , and helped him see he wasn’t as alone as he thought (V. 18) . God approaches the downhearted with tender, practical help.

The library notified the student when his book on suicide was ready to collect. But in a mix-up, the note went to his parents’ address instead. When his mother called him, distraught, he realized the devastation his suicide would bring. Without that address mix-up, he says, he wouldn’t be here today.

I don’t believe that student was saved by luck or chance. Whether it’s bread and water when we need it, or a timely wrong address, when mysterious intervention saves our lives, we’ve encountered divine tenderness. - SHERIDAN VOYSEY

나는 스크래블 게임을 좋아합니다. 한 번은 게임이 끝나자 친구들이 내가 했던 플레이를 내 이름을 따서 “카타라”라고 불렀습니다. 나는 게임을 하는 내내 지고 있었지만 마지막에 가방에 있던 타일이 바닥났을 때 일곱 글자로 된 단어를 만들어냈습니다. 이 플레이로 게임은 끝났고 나는 남아있는 모든 상대편 타일의 점수뿐만이 아니라 50점의 보너스까지 받아 일약 꼴찌에서 일등이 되었습니다. 이제는 게임에서 누군가가 지고 있을 때마다 그 사람은 전에 있었던 이 일을 기억하고 “카타라”를 하겠다는 희망을 갖게 되었습니다.

GOD’S MOVES

I love a good game of Scrabble. After one particular game, my friends named a move after me—calling it a “Katara.” I’d been trailing the entire game, but at the end of it—with no tiles left in the bag—I made a seven-letter word. This meant the game was over, and I received fifty bonus points as well as all the points from all of my opponents’ leftover tiles, moving me from last place to first. Now whenever we play and someone is trailing, they remember what happened and hold out hope for a “Katara.”

Remembering what has happened in the past has the power to lift our spirits and give us hope. And that’s exactly what the Israelites did when they celebrated Passover. The Passover commemorates what God did for the Israelites when they were in Egypt, oppressed by Pharaoh and his crew (EXODUS 1:6–14) . After they cried out to God, He delivered the people in a mighty way. He told them to put blood on their doorposts so the death angel would “pass over” their firstborn people and animals (12:12–13) . Then they would be kept safe from death.

Centuries later, believers in Jesus regularly take communion as we remember His sacrifice on the cross—providing what we needed to be delivered from sin and death (1 CORINTHIANS 11:23–26) . Remembering God’s loving acts in the past gives us hope for today. - KATARA PATTON

가정에서 나누는 믿음의 대화

“집 보다 좋은 곳은 없어. 집보다 좋은 곳은 없어.” ‘오즈의 마법사’ 에 나오는 도로시의 잊지 못할 대사는 ‘스타워즈’에서 ‘라이언 킹’ 에 이르기까지 우리에게 오랫동안 사랑받는 작품들에서 수 없이 많이 사용된 이야기 전개 방식입니다. 이것을 “영웅의 여정”이라고도 하는데, 요약하자면 한 평범한 사람이 평범한 삶을 살다가 특별한 모험을 하게 되는 것입니다. 주인공은 집을 떠나서 우군과 악당, 시험과 역경을 만나며 다른 세상으로 여행을 하게 됩니다. 만일 주인공이 여러 가지 시험을 이기고 영웅이
되면 끝에 가서 그동안의 이야기들과 얻은 지혜들을 가지고 집으로 돌아갑니다.

그런데 여기서 이 마지막 부분이 대단히 중요합니다. 귀신 들린 사람의 이야기는 이런 영웅의 여정과 매우 비슷합니다. 흥미로운 것은 마지막 장면에서 그 사람이 예수님께 “같이 가게 해 달라”고 간청했다는 것입니다 (마가복음 5:18, 현대인의 성경) . 그러나 예수님은 그에게 “집으로 돌아가라”고 말씀하셨습니다 (19절) . 그의 여정에서 집으로 돌아가 그를 가장 잘 아는 사람들에게 그가 경험한 놀라운 이야기를 들려주는 것이 중요했던 것입니다.

하나님께서는 우리 각 사람을 다른 방식과 다른 상황으로 부르십니다. 그러나 그중 어떤 사람들의 신앙 여정에서는 집으로 돌아가 그들을 가장 잘 아는 사람들에게 지내온 이야기들을 들려주는 것이 아주 중요합니다. 우리 중 누구에게는 “집보다 더 좋은 것은 없다”라는 말이 사명이 될 수 있습니다.

FAITH CONVERSATIONS AT HOME

“There’s no place like home. There’s no place like home.” Those unforgettable lines spoken by Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz reveal a story-telling device found in an overwhelming number of our most enduring stories from the likes of Star Wars to The Lion King. It’s known as “the hero’s journey.” In brief: an ordinary person is living an ordinary life when an extraordinary adventure is presented. The character leaves home and travels to a different world where tests and trials await, as well as mentors and villains. If she or he passes the tests and proves heroic, then the final stage is returning home with stories to tell and wisdom gained. The last piece is crucial.

The story of the demon-possessed man closely parallels the hero’s journey. It’s interesting that in last scene the man begged Jesus to let him “go with him” (MARK 5:18) . Yet Jesus told him: “Go home to your own people” (V. 19) . It was important in this man’s journey to return home to the people who knew him best and to tell them his amazing story.

God calls each of us in different ways and to different scenarios. But for some of us, it can be crucial for our faith journey to go home and tell our story to those who know us best. For some of us, the call is “there’s no place like home.” - JOHN BLASE

충분한 시간

친구의 책장에서 방대한 분량의 레오 톨스토이의 ‘전쟁과 평화’를 보고 나는 “사실 난 그 책을 다 읽지 못했어.”라고 고백했습니다. 친구 마티는 “그러게, 내가 교수직을 그만두었을 때 한 친구가 이 책을 선물하며 ‘너도 이제 드디어 이 책을 읽을 시간이 생겼구나.’라고 하더군.” 하고 웃으며 말했습니다.

전도서 3장의 처음 여덟 절은 삶의 여러 가지 주제를 임의로 골라 그에 대해 친숙하고 자연스러운 운율로 써 내려갑니다. 삶의 어느 단계에서든 우리가 하고 싶은 것을 다 할 시간은 없습니다. 그리고 시간 관리를 지혜롭게 하려면 계획이 필요합니다 (시편 90:12) .

우리의 영적 건강을 위해서는 매일 하나님과의 시간을 보내는 것이 우선순위이어야 합니다. 생산적인 일을 하면 마음의 낙을 누릴 수 있습니다 (전도서 3:13) . 하나님을 섬기고 다른 사람들을 섬기는 것은 우리를 향한 하나님의 목적을 이루기 위해 반드시 필요합니다 (에베소서 2:10) . 그리고 휴식이나 여가 시간을 갖는 것은 낭비가 아니라 몸과 마음을 새롭게 합니다.

물론 우리는 지금 이곳에서 일어나는 일에 몰두하며 중요하다고 생각하는 일을 하기 위해 시간을 보내기 아주 쉽습니다. 그러나 전도서 3장 11절은 하나님께서 “우리에게 영원을 사모하는 마음을 주셨느니라”라고 기록하며 ‘영원’한 것을 먼저 생각하라고 가르칩니다. 그렇게 하면 우리에게 가장 중요한 어떤 것을 직면하게 될 것입니다. 그것은 “처음부터 끝까지” 다 보시는 하나님의 영원한 관점입니다.

TIME ENOUGH

When I saw the massive volume of Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace on my friend’s bookshelf, I confessed, “I’ve never actually made it all the way through that.” “Well,” Marty chuckled, “When I retired from teaching, I got it as a gift from a
friend who told me, ‘Now you’ll finally have time to read it.’ ”

The first eight verses of Ecclesiastes 3 state a familiar, natural rhythm of the activities of life with some arbitrary choices. No matter what stage of life we find ourselves in, it’s often difficult to find time to do everything we want to do. And to make wise decisions about managing our time, it’s helpful to have a plan (PSALM 90:12) .

Time spent with God each day is a priority for our spiritual health. Doing productive work is satisfying to our spirit (ECCLESIASTES 3:13) . Serving God and helping other people is essential to fulfilling God’s purpose for us (EPHESIANS 2:10) . And times of rest or leisure aren’t wasted but refreshing for body and spirit.

Of course, it’s easy to become too focused on the here and now—finding time for the things that matter most to us. But Ecclesiastes 3:11 says that God has “set eternity” in our hearts— reminding us to make a priority of things that are eternal. That can bring us face to face with something of the greatest importance— God’s eternal perspective “from beginning to end.” - CINDY HESS KASPER

합리화하지 맙시다

애틀랜타 주의 한 경찰관이 운전자에게 왜 그녀의 차를 세웠는지 아느냐고 물었습니다. 그녀는 당황해하며 모른다고 말했습니다. 경찰관은 “선생님, 운전 중에 문자를 보내고 있었습니다”라고 정중히 말했습니다. 그녀는 “아닙니다, 아니에요!”라며 휴대전화를 보여주며 “이메일 한 거예요” 라고 항의했습니다.

휴대전화로 이메일을 보내는 것이 운전 중 문자 메시지를 금지하는 법망을 피할 수는 없지요! 이 법의 핵심은 문자 전송을 금지하는 것이 아니라 운전 중 다른데 정신 파는 것을 방지하려는 것입니다.

예수님께서는 그 시대의 종교 지도자들의 훨씬 더 심각한 문제점을 지적하셨습니다. 주님은 증거로 “네 부모를 공경하라”는 계명을 인용하면서 “너희가 전통을 지키려고 하나님의 계명을 잘 저버리는도다”라고 말씀 하셨습니다 (마가복음 7:9-10) . 그들 부유한 지도자들은 율법을 철저히 지킨다는 미명 아래 그들의 가족들에게는 소홀했습니다. 그들은 자기들의 돈을 “하나님께 바쳤다”라고 하면서, 노년의 부모를 돌볼 필요가 없다고 했습니다. 예수님께서는 문제의 핵심을 지적했습니다. “너희가 전한 전통으로 하나님의 말씀을 폐한다” (13절) 고 말씀한 것입니다. 부모를 공경하지 않았던 그들은 곧 하나님을 공경하지 않았던 것입니다.

합리화는 교묘한 방법으로 나타날 수 있습니다. 합리화함으로 자신의 책임을 회피하고, 이기적인 행동을 하고도 이유가 있고, 하나님이 직접 주신 명령을 안 지킵니다. 이것이 바로 우리의 모습이라면 우리는 자신을 속이고 있는 것입니다. 예수님은 우리의 이기적 성향을 내려놓고 대신 하나님 아버지의 선한 가르침을 받쳐주시는 성령의 인도하심을 따르라 하십니다.

REJECTING RATIONALIZATION

An Atlanta police officer asked a driver if she knew why he’d stopped her. “No idea!” she said in bewilderment. “Ma’am, you were texting while driving,” the officer gently told her. “No, no!” she protested, holding up her cell phone as evidence. “It’s an email.”

Using a cell phone to send an email doesn’t grant us a loophole from a law that prohibits texting while driving! The point of the law isn’t to prevent texting; it’s to prevent distracted driving.

Jesus accused the religious leaders of His day of creating far worse loopholes. “You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God,” He said, quoting the command to “Honor your father and mother” as evidence (MARK 7:9–10) . Under the hypocritical cloak of religious devotion, these wealthy leaders were neglecting their families. They simply declared their money as “devoted to God,” and voila, no need to help Mom and Dad in their old age. Jesus quickly got to the heart of the problem. “You nullify the word of God by your tradition,” He said (V. 13) . They weren’t honoring God; they were dishonoring their parents.

Rationalization can be so subtle. With it we avoid responsibilities, explain away selfish behavior, and reject God’s direct commands. If that describes our behavior, we’re merely deceiving ourselves. Jesus offers us the opportunity to exchange our selfish tendencies for the guidance of the Spirit behind His Father’s good instructions. - TIM GUSTAFSON

GENEROSITY AND JOY

Researchers tell us there’s a link between generosity and joy: those who give their money and time to others are happier than those who don’t. This has led one psychologist to conclude, “Let’s stop thinking about giving as a moral obligation, and start thinking of it as a source of pleasure.”

While giving can make us happy, I question whether happiness should be the goal. If we’re only generous to people or causes that make us feel good, what about the more difficult or mundane needs requiring our support?

Scripture links generosity with joy too, but on a different basis. After giving his own wealth toward building the temple, King David invited the Israelites to also donate (1 CHRONICLES 29:1–5) . The people responded generously, giving gold, silver, and precious stones joyously (VV. 6–8) . But notice what their joy was over: “The people rejoiced at the willing response of their leaders, for they had given freely and wholeheartedly to the Lord” (V. 9, ITALICS ADDED) . Scripture never tells us to give because it will make us happy but to give willingly and wholeheartedly to meet a need. Joy often follows.

As missionaries know, it can be easier to raise funds for evangelism than for administration because believers in Jesus like the feeling of funding frontline work. Let’s be generous toward other needs as well. After all, Jesus freely gave Himself. - SHERIDAN VOYSEY

예수님이 함께 계신다

연로하신 이모할머니는 얼굴에 미소를 띠고 병상에 누워 계셨습니다. 백발은 뒤로 넘겨졌고 두 뺨은 주름으로 가득했습니다. 이모할머니의 말은 많지 않았지만 아버지, 어머니와 함께 문병을 갔을 때 그녀가 나직이 속삭인 몇 마디는 아직도 기억납니다. “나 외롭지 않아. 예수님이 내 옆에 계시니까.”

당시 미혼이었던 나는 이모할머니의 고백에 놀랐습니다. 남편은 수년 전에 돌아가셨고 자녀들은 멀리 떨어져 살고 있었습니다. 90세가 다 되어 혼자가 된 이모할머니는 침대에 누워 거의 움직일 수 없었습니다. 그럼에도 자신이 외롭지 않다고 말씀하셨습니다.

예수님이 제자들에게 “내가 너희와 항상 함께 있으리라” (마태복음 28:20) 고 하신 말씀을 우리 모두가 믿어야 하듯, 이모할머니는 이 말씀을 그대로 받아들였습니다. 그녀는 예수님이 제자들에게 세상으로 나아가 그의 말씀을 다른 사람에게 전하라 (19절) 고 가르치시며 약속하신 대로 그리스도의 영이 함께 계신다는 것을 알았습니다. 예수님은 성령이 제자들과 우리와 “함께” 계실 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다 (요한복음 14:16-17).

나는 이모할머니가 그 약속이 이루어진 것을 체험했다고 확신합니다. 그녀가 침대에 누워있을 때 성령이 함께 하셨습니다. 그리고 성령님은 그녀를 사용하여, 예수님의 진리의 말씀을 듣고 마음에 새겨야 하는 어린 조카 손녀인 나에게 그 진리를 전하게 하셨습니다.

JESUS IS HERE

My elderly great aunt lay on her sickbed with a smile on her face. Her gray hair was pushed back from her face and wrinkles covered her cheeks. She didn’t speak much, but I still recall the few words she said when my father, mother,
and I visited her. She whispered, “I don’t get lonely. Jesus is here with me.”

As a single woman at the time, I marveled at my aunt’s proclamation. Her husband had died several years earlier, and her children lived far away. Nearing her ninetieth year of life, she was alone, in her bed, barely able to move. Yet she was able to say she wasn’t lonely.

My aunt took Jesus’ words to the disciples literally, as we all should: “Surely I am with you always” (MATTHEW 28:20) . She knew that Christ’s Spirit was with her, as He promised when He instructed the disciples to go out into the world and share His message with others (V. 19) . Jesus said the Holy Spirit would “be with” the disciples and us (JOHN 14:16–17).

I’m certain my aunt experienced the reality of that promise. The Spirit was within her as she lay on her bed. And the Spirit used her to share His truth with me—a young niece who needed to hear those words and take them to heart. -KATARA PATTON
