비범한 용기

1478년, 이탈리아 피렌체의 지배자 로렌조 데 메디치가 자객의 공격에서 벗어나자, 피렌체 국민들은 그들의 지도자를 향한 공격에 보복하려고 전쟁을 일으켰습니다. 상황이 더 악화되면서 나폴리의 잔혹한 왕 페란테 1세가 로렌조의 적이 되었는데, 용감한 로렌조의 행동으로 모든 것이 바뀌었습니다. 로렌조는 무장하지 않은 채 홀로 왕을 찾아갔던 것입니다. 그의 용기에 매력과 우아함이 더해져, 그것에 페란테 왕이 감탄하게 되면서 결국 전쟁은 끝이 났습니다.

다니엘 역시 왕이 마음의 변화를 경험하도록 용기를 보여주었습니다. 바벨론의 그 누구도 느부갓네살 왕이 꾼 근심 어린 꿈을 설명하거나 해석할 수 없었습니다. 왕은 너무 화가 나 다니엘과 친구들을 포함한 왕의 모든 지혜자들을 처형하려고 했습니다. 하지만 다니엘은 자기를 죽이고 싶어 하는 왕을 만나게 해달라고 요청했습니다(다니엘 2:24).

느부갓네살 앞에 선 다니엘은 오직 하나님만이 왕의 꿈의 비밀스러운 것들을 밝히 보여주실 것이라고 말했습니다(28절). 다니엘 선지자가 꿈을 설명하고 해독하자 느부갓네살은 “모든 신들의 신이시요 모든 왕의 주재”(47 절)이신 하나님께 영광을 돌렸습니다. 하나님을 믿는 믿음에서 나온 다니엘의 비범한 용기는 그날 자신과 그의 친구들, 그리고 다른 지혜자들의 죽음까지 면하게 해주었습니다.

우리는 살면서 중요한 메시지를 전하기 위해 용감함과 대담함이 필요할 때가 있습니다. 하나님께서 우리의 말을 인도하시고, 무엇을 말해야 할지 알 수 있도록 지혜를 주시며, 그것을 잘 말할 수 있는 능력을 주시기를 소망합니다.

UNCOMMON COURAGE

In 1478, Lorenzo de Medici, the ruler of Florence, Italy, escaped an attack on his life. His countrymen sparked a war when they tried to retaliate against the attack on their leader. As the situation worsened, the cruel King Ferrante I of Naples became Lorenzo’s enemy, but a courageous act by Lorenzo changed everything. He visited the king unarmed and alone. This bravery, paired with his charm and brilliance, won Ferrante’s admiration and ended the war.

Daniel also helped a king experience a change of heart. No one in Babylon could describe or interpret King Nebuchadnezzar’s troubling dream. This made him so angry that he decided to execute all his advisors—including Daniel and his friends. But Daniel asked to visit the king who wanted him dead (DANIEL 2:24).

Standing before Nebuchadnezzar, Daniel gave God all the credit for revealing the mystery of the dream (V. 28). When the prophet described and deciphered it, Nebuchadnezzar honored the “God of gods and the Lord of kings” (V. 47). Daniel’s uncommon courage, which was born of his faith in God, helped him, his friends, and the other advisors avoid death that day.

In our lives, there are times when bravery and boldness are needed to communicate important messages. May God guide our words and give us the wisdom to know what to say and the ability to say it well. - JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

치열한 싸움

1896년 탐험가 칼 아켈리가 에디오피아의 한 외딴 지역에서 80파운드 (약 36킬로그램)짜리 표범에게 쫓기고 있었습니다. 그는 표범이 덤벼들어 “이빨로 목을 물려고” 했던 것을 기억합니다. 그것이 실패하자 표범은 그 포악한 턱으로 그의 오른팔을 잡아챘습니다. 그 둘은 모래 위를 뒹굴며 오랜 시간 치열한 싸움을 벌였습니다. 아켈리는 힘이 빠졌고, “이제 싸움은 누가 먼저 포기하는가 하는 것이 문제였습니다.” 아켈리는 마지막 남은 힘을 모아 맨손으로 그 큰 고양잇과 동물을 질식시켜 죽일 수 있었습니다.

바울 사도는 예수님을 믿는 우리 각자가 어떻게 필연적으로 우리 자신의 치열한 싸움과 마주할 수밖에 없는지, 그리고 어떻게 적에게 압도되어 항복하고 싶은 유혹을 받는지를 설명합니다. 하지만 우리는 굴복하는 대신 도리어 “마귀의 계략을 대적”하고 “굳건히 서야” 합니다(에베소서 6:11, 14). 바울은 우리가 나약하고 연악하다는 사실에 두려움으로 움츠러들거나 무너지지 말고, 우리 자신의 용기나 힘을 믿지 말고 하나님을 의지해야 한다는 사실을 기억하며 믿음을 가지고 전진하라고 권면합니다. 그래서 그는 “주 안에서와 그 힘의 능력으로 강건하여지라”고 썼습니다(10절). 우리가 여러 가지 도전에 직면할 때 우리는 언제 어디서나 기도를 통해 하나님을 만날 수 있습니다(18절).

THE FIERCE STRUGGLE

In 1896, an explorer named Carl Akeley found himself in a remote section of Ethiopia, chased by an eighty-pound leopard. He remembered the leopard pouncing, trying “to sink her teeth into my throat.” She missed, snagging his right arm with her vicious jaws. The two rolled in the sand—a long, fierce struggle. Akeley weakened, and “it became a question of who would give up first.” Summoning his last bit of strength, Akeley was able to suffocate the big cat with his bare hands.

The apostle Paul explained how each of us who believe in Jesus will inevitably encounter our own fierce struggles, those places where we feel overwhelmed and are tempted to surrender. Instead, we must take our “stand against the devil’s schemes” and “stand firm” (EPHESIANS 6:11, 14). Rather than cower in fear or crumble as we recognize our weakness and vulnerability, Paul challenged us to step forward in faith, remembering that we don’t rely on our own courage and strength but on God. “Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power,” he wrote (V. 10). In the challenges we face, He’s only a prayer away (V. 18).

Yes, we have many struggles, and we’ll never escape them by our own power or ingenuity. But God is more powerful than any enemy or evil we’ll ever face. - WINN COLLIER

1980년대 초 하나님을 믿지 않았던 한 저명한 천문학자가 이런 글을 썼습니다. “밝혀진 사실들을 상식적으로 해석해 보면 어떤 초지능을 지닌 존재의 손길이 화학과 생물학뿐 아니라 물리학까지 미쳤다는 것을 시사해 준다.” 이 과학자의 눈에는 그 증거들이 ‘무언가’가 우주에서 우리가 관찰하는 모든 것을 설계한 것으로 비춰졌습니다. 그는 “이 자연에는 언급할만한 그런 보이지 않는 힘은 존재하지 않는다.”라고 덧붙여 말했습니다. 다시 말해 우리가 보는 모든 것은 ‘누군가’에 의해 계획된 것처럼 보이는 것입니다. 하지만 그 천문학자는 여전히 무신론자로 남았습니다.

MONKEYING WITH THE COSMOS

In the early 1980s, a prominent astronomer who didn’t believe in God wrote, “A common sense interpretation of the facts suggests that a super-intellect has monkeyed with physics, as well as with chemistry and biology.” To this scientist’s eye, the evidence showed that something had designed everything we observe in the cosmos. He added, “There are no blind forces worth speaking about in nature.” In other words, everything we see looks as if it was planned by Someone. And yet, the astronomer remained an atheist.

Three thousand years ago, another intelligent man looked at the skies and drew a different conclusion. “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?” wondered David (PSALM 8:3–4).

Yet God cares for us deeply. The universe tells the story of its Intelligent Designer, the “Super Intellect” who made our minds and put us here to ponder His work. Through Jesus and His creation, God can be known. Paul wrote, “[Christ] existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth” (COLOSSIANS 1:15–16 NLT).

The cosmos has indeed been “monkeyed with.” The identity of the Intelligent Designer is there to be discovered by anyone willing to seek. - TIM GUSTAFSON

회개의 은사

“아뇨! 제가 안 했어요!” 제인은 틴에이저 아들이 사실대로 말하지 않고 부인하자 마음이 침울해졌습니다. 그녀는 아들 시몬에게 무슨 일이 있었는지 다시 묻기 전에 하나님께 도움을 구하는 기도를 했습니다. 아들이 거짓말이 아니라고 계속 고집하자 마침내 그녀는 화가 나서 두 손을 들고 말았습니다. 그녀가 잠시 시간이 필요하다고 말하고 뒤돌아 걷기 시작하자 곧 어깨에 손길을 느꼈고 아들이 사과하는 소리를 들었습니다. 아들이 성령께서 지적해 주는 것에 반응하여 회개한 것입니다.

구약 성경의 요엘서에서 하나님은 그의 백성들에게 전심으로 그분께로 돌이키라고 말씀하실 때 그들의 죄를 진실로 회개할 것을 요구하셨습니다(2:12). 하나님은 겉으로 하는 회개의 행위보다 그들의 완악한 태도를 누그러뜨리기를 바라셨습니다. “너희는 옷을 찢지 말고 마음을 찢으라.” 요엘은 이스라엘 백성들에게 하나님은 “은혜로우시며 자비로우시며 노하기를 더디하시며 인애가 크시다”(13절)는 것을 일깨워 주었습니다.

THE GIFT OF REPENTANCE

“No! I didn’t do it!” Jane heard her teenage son’s denial with a sinking heart, for she knew he wasn’t telling the truth. She breathed a prayer asking God for help before asking Simon again what happened. He continued to deny he was lying, until finally she threw her hands up in exasperation. Saying she needed a time out, she began to walk away when she felt a hand on her shoulder and heard his apology. He responded to the convicting of the Holy Spirit, and repented.

In the Old Testament book of Joel, God called His people to true repentance for their sins as He welcomed them to return to Him wholeheartedly (2:12). God didn’t seek outward acts of remorse, but rather that they would soften their hard attitudes: “Rend your heart and not your garments.” Joel reminded the Israelites that God is “gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love” (V. 13).

We might find confessing our wrongdoing difficult, for in our pride we don’t want to admit our sins. Perhaps we’ve fudged the truth, and we justify our actions by saying it was only “a little white lie.” But when we heed God’s gentle yet firm prompting to repent, He’ll forgive us and cleanse us from all our sins (1 JOHN 1:9). We can be free of guilt and shame, knowing we’re forgiven. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

내가 40분 걸리는 운동의 마무리에 접어들면 트레이너는 틀림없이 “힘차게 마무리합시다!” 하고 소리칠 것입니다. 내가 만난 모든 개인 트레이너들이나 단체 피트니스 리더들은 마무리 운동 몇 분 전이면 언제나 그렇게 말합니다. 그들은 운동하러 가는 것만큼이나 운동의 마무리가 중요하다는 것을 알고 있으며, 또한 사람의 몸은 한동안 움직이고 난 후에 느려지거나 게을러지는 성향이 있다는 것도 압니다.

FINISH STRONG

As I enter the final few minutes of my forty-minute workout, I can almost guarantee that my instructor will yell out, “Finish strong!” Every personal trainer or group fitness leader I’ve known uses the phrase a few minutes before cool down. They know that the end of the workout is just as important as showing up for it. And they know that the human body has a tendency to want to slow down or slack off when it’s been in motion for a while.

The same is true in our journey with Jesus. Paul told the elders of the church at Ephesus that he needed to finish strong as he headed to Jerusalem, where he was certain to face more persecution as an apostle of Christ (ACTS 20:17–24). Paul, however, was undeterred. He had a mission and that was to finish the journey he’d begun and to do what God called him to do. He had one job—to tell “the good news of God’s grace” (V. 24). And he wanted to finish strong. Even if hardship awaited him (V. 23), he continued to run toward his finish line—focused and determined to remain steadfast in his journey.

Whether we’re exercising our physical muscles or working out our God-given abilities through actions, words, and deeds, we too can be encouraged by the reminder to finish strong. Don’t “become weary” (GALATIANS 6:9). Don’t give up. God will provide what you need to finish strong. KATARA PATTON

축복을 따라 살아가기

1799년에 열 두 살인 콘라드 리드는 노스캐롤라이나에 있는 가족의 작은 농장을 가로지르는 개울에서 크고 반짝이는 암석을 발견했습니다. 그는 그것을 집에 가져와 아버지에게 보여주었습니다. 가난한 이민자 농부였던 아버지는 그 암석의 잠재적 가치를 알지 못하고 문을 괴는 데 사용했습니다. 가족들은 몇 년 동안 그 돌을 그대로 지나쳐 다녔습니다.

바벨론을 떠난다는 것은, 아마 그때와 마찬가지로 지금도, 우리가 죄악된 길을 떠나 선을 행하기를 갈망하시는 하나님께로 “돌아와서” 오직 그분께 순종하고 그분만 따르는 것을 의미합니다!

WALKING BY A BLESSING

In 1799, twelve-year-old Conrad Reed found a large, glittering rock in the stream that ran through his family’s small farm in North Carolina. He carried it home to show his father, a poor immigrant farmer. His father didn’t understand the rock’s potential value and used it as a doorstop. The family walked by it for years.

Eventually Conrad’s rock—actually a seventeen-pound gold nugget—caught the eye of a local jeweler. Soon the Reed family became wealthy, and their property became the site of the first major gold strike in the United States.

Sometimes we walk past a blessing, intent on our own plans and ways. After Israel was exiled to Babylon for disobeying God, He proclaimed freedom for them once again. But He also reminded them of what they’d missed. “I am the Lord your God,” He told them, “who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in
the way you should go. If only you had paid attention to my commands, your peace would have been like a river, your well-being like the waves of the sea.” God then encouraged them to follow Him away from old ways into a new life: “Leave Babylon . . . ! Announce this with shouts of joy” (ISAIAH 48:17–18, 20).

Leaving Babylon, perhaps now as much as then, means leaving sinful ways and “coming home” to a God who longs to do us good—if only we’ll obey and follow Him! - JAMES BANKS

예수님을 믿은 후 나는 어머니에게 복음을 전했습니다. 하지만 예상과 달리 어머니는 예수님을 받아들이지 않고 일 년 동안 나와 대화를 끊었습니다. 어머니는 예수님을 믿는다고 말하는 사람들에게서 나쁜 경험을 했기 때문에 기독교인들을 신뢰하지 않았던 것입니다. 나는 어머니를 위해 기도하며 매주 연락을 드렸습니다. 어머니가 침묵으로 대하는 동안, 성령님은 나를 위로하시고 내 마음에 계속 역사하셨습니다. 마침내 어머니가 내 전화를 받으셨을 때, 나는 어머니를 더욱 사랑하고 기회가 있을 때마다 하나님의 진리를 어머니에게 전하겠다고 다짐했습니다. 어머니와 화해한 지 몇 달 후 어머니는 내가 변했다고 말씀하셨습니다. 거의 1년이 지나서 어머니는 예수님을 구주로 영접하였고, 그 결과 우리의 관계는 더욱 깊어졌습니다.

예수님을 믿는 사람들은 인류에게 주어진 가장 큰 선물인 그리스도께 다가갈 수 있습니다. 바울 사도는 우리가 “각처에서 그리스도를 아는 냄새를 나타내”(고린도후서 2:14)야 한다고 말합니다. 그는 복음을 전하는 자들이 믿는 자들에게 풍기는 “그리스도의 향기”라고 하면서도, 예수님을 거부하는 자들에게는 사망에 이르는 악취를 풍긴다고 말합니다(15-16절).

예수님을 구주로 영접한 우리에게는 세상에 사는 제한된 시간 동안 다른 사람들을 사랑하는 것을 통해, 삶을 바꾸는 주님의 진리를 전파하는 특권이 주어졌습니다. 우리는 가장 힘들고 외로운 순간에도 주님이 우리의 필요를 채워주신다는 것을 믿어야 합니다. 개인적으로 어떤 대가를 치르더라도 하나님의 복음은 항상 전할 가치가 있습니다.

ALWAYS WORTH SHARING

After I became a believer in Jesus, I shared the gospel with my mother. Instead of making a decision to trust Jesus, as I expected, she stopped speaking to me for a year. Her bad experiences with people who claimed to follow Jesus made her distrust believers in Christ. I prayed for her and reached out to her weekly. The Holy Spirit comforted me and continued working on my heart as my mom gave me the silent treatment. When she finally answered my phone call, I committed to loving her and sharing God’s truth with her whenever I had the opportunity. Months after our reconciliation, she said I’d changed. Almost a year later, she received Jesus as her Savior, and, as a result, our relationship deepened.

Believers in Jesus have access to the greatest gift given to humanity—Christ. The apostle Paul says we’re to “spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere” (2 CORINTHIANS 2:14). He refers to those who share the gospel as “the pleasing aroma of Christ” to those who believe, but acknowledges we reek of death to those who reject Jesus (VV. 15–16).

After we receive Christ as our Savior, we have the privilege of using our limited time on earth to spread His life-changing truth while loving others. Even during our hardest and loneliest moments, we can trust He’ll provide what we need. No matter what the personal cost, God’s good news is always worth sharing. - XOCHITL DIXON

새겨진 고통스러운 슬픔

희귀하고 치료가 불가능한 악성 뇌종양 진단을 받은 캐롤라인은 중환자 아이들과 그 가족의 사진을 찍는 특별 자원봉사를 하면서 새로운 희망과 목적을 찾게 되었습니다. 그 사진봉사 덕분에 가족들은 고통스러운 슬픔 중에도 “그런 절박한 상황에서 있을 법하지 않은 은혜와 아름다움의 순간들”을 아이들과 함께한 소중한 시간을 간직할 수 있었습니다. 캐롤라인은 “가장 힘든 순간에 가족들이...그럼에도 아니 그렇기 때문에 서로 더욱 사랑하는 모습”을 보게 되었습니다.

고통스러운 슬픔의 진실을 사진으로 담아낸 것에는 말로 형언할 수 없이 강력한 무언가가 있습니다. 그것은 그 슬픔의 처참한 현실적인 면과, 동시에 그 슬픔 가운데서 아름다움과 희망을 경험하게 하는 방법들을 함께 보여주고 있습니다.

욥기의 많은 부분은 욥의 처참한 상실의 아픔을 가감없이 보여주는 고통스러운 사진과 같습니다(1:18-19). 욥과 며칠을 함께 앉아 있던 그의 친구들은 욥의 고통스러운 슬픔에 지쳐, 그의 슬픔을 최소화하거나 그것을 하나님의 심판이라고 설명하려고 했습니다. 하지만 욥은 그 어느 것도 받아들이지 않으면서, 중요한 것은 그가 겪고 있는 현실이라면서 그의 경험을 담은 증언이 “영원히 돌에 새겨지기를”(19:24) 바랐습니다.

ENGRAVED GRIEF

After receiving the devastating diagnosis of a rare and incurable brain cancer, Caroline found renewed hope and purpose through providing a unique service: volunteering photography services for critically ill children and their families. Through this service, families could capture the precious moments shared with their children, both in grief and “the moments of grace and beauty we assume don’t exist in those desperate places.” She observed that “in the hardest moments imaginable, those families . . . choose to love, despite and because of it all.”

There’s something unspeakably powerful about capturing the truth of grief—both the devastating reality of it and the ways in which we experience beauty and hope in the midst of it.

Much of the book of Job is like a photograph of grief—capturing honestly Job’s journey through devastating loss (1:18–19). After sitting with Job for several days, his friends wearied of his grief, resorting to minimizing it or explaining it away as God’s judgment. But Job would have none of it, insisting that what he was going through mattered, and wishing that the testimony of his experience would be “engraved in rock forever!” (19:24).

Through the book of Job, it was “engraved”—in a way that points us in our grief to the living God (VV. 26–27), who meets us in our pain, carrying us through death into resurrection life. - MONICA LA ROSE

해바라기를 두고 벌이는 싸움

우리 집 주변에 사는 사슴들과 나는 해바라기를 두고 서로 다른 생각을 가지고 있습니다. 봄마다 해바라기를 심을 때면 나는 꽃이 활짝 피었을 때의 아름다움을 기대합니다. 하지만 나의 사슴 친구들은 활짝 핀 꽃에는 관심이 없습니다. 사슴들은 단지 잎사귀와 줄기를 모조리 씹어 먹는 것만 원할 뿐입니다. 매년 여름이면 해바라기를 다 먹어 치우려는 네 발 달린 내 이웃과 해바라기의 핀 모습을 보려고 하는 나의 전투가 벌어집니다. 어느 해엔 내가 이기고, 또 다른 어느 해엔 사슴들이 이깁니다.

예수님을 믿는 신자인 우리의 삶을 생각해 보면 우리와 우리의 적 사탄과의 사이에도 그와 비슷한 싸움이 벌어지고 있음을 쉽게 알 수 있습니다. 우리의 목표는 우리의 삶으로 하나님의 영광을 돋보이도록 하는 영적 성숙을 향해 지속적으로 성장하는 것입니다. 마귀는 우리의 믿음을 삼키고 우리의 영적 성장을 방해하기를 바랍니다. 그러나 예수님은 이 세상의 “모든 통치자” 를 다스리시고 우리를 주 안에서 “충만하게” 하셔서(골로새서 2:10), 우리를 “온전하게” 만들어주십니다. 십자가에서의 그리스도의 승리는 마치 아름다운 해바라기꽃처럼 우리가 이 세상에 우뚝 서게 해줍니다.

예수님은 “우리를 거스르고 불리하게 하는 법조문”(죄에 대한 형벌)을 십자가에 못 박으시고(14절) 우리를 조종했던 세력들을 멸하셨습니다. 우리는 그 안에 “뿌리를 박으며 세움을 받아”(7절) “그리스도와 함께 살아나게” 되었습니다(13절). 예수님 안에서 우리는 대적의 영적 공격에 대항하고 참된 아름다움을 지닌 생명을 드러내며 꽃 피울 수 있는 권세(10절)를 지니게 되었습니다.

THE SUNFLOWER BATTLE

The deer in our neighborhood and I have two different opinions about sunflowers. When I plant sunflowers each spring, I’m looking forward to the beauty of their blooms. My deer friends, however, don’t care about the finished product. They simply want to chew the stems and leaves until there’s nothing left. It’s an annual summertime battle as I try to see the sunflowers to maturity before my four-hoofed neighbors devour them. Sometimes I win; sometimes they win.

When we think about our lives as believers in Jesus, it’s easy to see a similar battle being waged between us and our enemy— Satan. Our goal is continual growth leading to spiritual maturity that helps our lives stand out for God’s honor. The devil wants to devour our faith and keep us from growing. But Jesus has dominion over “every power” and can bring us “to fullness” (COLOSSIANS 2:10), which means He makes us “complete.” Christ’s victory on the cross allows us to stand out in the world like those beautiful sunflowers.

When Jesus nailed the “record of the charges against us” (the penalty for our sins) to the cross (V. 14 NLT), He destroyed the powers that controlled us. We became “rooted and built up” (V. 7) and made “alive with Christ” (V. 13). In Him we have the power (V. 10) to resist the enemy’s spiritual attacks and to flourish in Jesus— displaying a life of true beauty. - DAVE BRANON

사람의 신분을 확인하는 데 지문이 오랫동안 사용되어 왔지만, 복제가 가능해지면서 속일 수 있게 되었습니다. 마찬가지로 사람 눈의 동공 패턴도 누군가 콘택트렌즈를 통해 결과를 왜곡할 수 있어서 이제는 신뢰할 만한 신원 확인 수단이 아닙니다. 생체 인식을 통해 개인을 식별하는 것은 실패한 것으로 보입니다. 그렇다면 이제 사람을 식별하는 독특한 특성으로 무엇을 사용할 수 있을까요? 그런데 사람마다 혈관 구조가 독특하여 위조가 불가능하다는 것이 밝혀졌습니다. 각 개인의 “혈관 지도”는 지구상의 다른 어떤 사람과도 일치하지 않는 일종의 인식표와 같습니다.

인체구조의 그런 복잡함을 생각하다 보면 우리를 지으신 창조주를 향한 경배와 감탄을 자아내게 합니다. 다윗은 우리를 “지으심이 심히 기묘”하고 “기이”하여(시편 139:14), 분명 기릴 만한 일임을 상기시켜 줍니다. 사실, 시편 111편 2절은 “여호와께서 행하시는 일들이 크시오니 이를 즐거워하는 자들이 다 기리는도다”라고 일깨워 줍니다.

그러나 우리의 더 큰 관심을 받기에 합당하신 분은 바로 창조주 하나님이십니다. 하나님이 행하신 위대한 일들을 찬양하면서 우리는 하나님 그분도 찬양해야 합니다! 하나님께서 행하신 일들도 위대하지만, 하나님은 더욱 위대하십니다. 그래서 시편 기자는 이렇게 기도했습니다. “무릇 주는 위대하사 기이한 일들을 행하시오니 주만이 하나님이시니이다”(86:10).

오늘, 하나님이 행하신 위대한 일들을 생각하면서 하나님 그분이 또한 얼마나 크신 분인가에 대해서도 경탄할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

HOW GREAT IS OUR GOD!

Fingerprints have long been used to identify people, but they can be faked by creating copies. Similarly, the pattern of the iris in the human eye is a reliable source for ID—until someone alters the pattern with a contact lens to skew the results. The use of biometrics to identify individuals can be defeated. So, what qualifies as a unique identifying characteristic? It turns out that everyone’s blood-vessel patterns are unique and virtually impossible to counterfeit. Your own personal “vein map” is a one-of-akind identifier, setting you apart from everyone else on the planet.

Pondering such complexities of human beings should prompt a sense of worship and wonder for the Creator who made us. David reminded us that we are “fearfully and wonderfully made” (PSALM 139:14), and that is certainly worth celebrating. In fact, Psalm 111:2 reminds us, “Great are the works of the Lord; they are pondered by all who delight in them.”

Even more worthy of our attention is the divine Maker Himself. While celebrating God’s great deeds, we also must celebrate Him! His deeds are great, but He’s even greater, prompting the psalmist to pray, “For you are great and do marvelous deeds; you alone are God” (86:10).

Today, as we consider the greatness of what God does, may we also marvel at the greatness of who He is. - BILL CROWDER
