코로나 호텔

예루살렘에 있는 단 호텔은 2020년에 “코로나 호텔”이라는 별명으로 유명해졌습니다. 정부가 그 호텔을 코로나 바이러스 증상에서 회복 중인 환자들을 위한 시설로 지정했는데, 어려운 시기에 그 호텔은 기쁨과 화합이 넘치는 보기 드문 장소가 되었습니다. 투숙객들은 이미 바이러스에 감염되었기 때문에 자유롭게 함께 노래하고 춤추고 웃을 수 있었는데, 그들이 실제로 그렇게 한 것입니다! 서로 다른 정치 종교 집단 간의 긴장이 팽배한 그 나라에서, 그들은 위기를 함께 겪으면서 서로를 먼저 인간으로 보는 법을 배우고 더 나아가 친구가 될 수 있는 공간을 만든 것입니다.

우리가 비슷하다고 생각되는 사람들, 그리고 비슷한 경험과 가치를 공유하는 사람들에게 끌리는 것은 자연스럽고 지극히 정상적입니다. 그러나 바울 사도가 자주 강조한 것처럼, 복음은 우리가 “정상”이라고 보는 사람들 사이에 있는 모든 장벽에 대한 도전입니다 (고린도후서 5:15) . 복음이라는 안경을
통해 우리는 차이점보다는 상처와 소원을 함께 나누는 더 큰 그림을 보게 되고, 하나님의 사랑 안에서 치유를 경험하게 됩니다.

“한 사람이 모든 사람을 대신하여 죽었다”는 것을 믿는다면, 더 이상 다른 사람들을 겉모습으로 판단해서는 안됩니다. 그 대신 “그리스도의 사랑이 우리를 강권하여” (14절) 우리의 생각 이상으로 더 많이 하나님께서 사랑하시는 이 세상 모든 사람들과 함께 그분의 사랑과 사명을 나누어야 합니다.

예수님, 어려운 시기에 다른 사람들의 사랑과 기쁨을 통해 숨막히도록 아름다운 빛을 보게 하시니 감사합니다. “세상적인 안목으로 사람을 보지 않고” 매일 그 사랑과 기쁨으로 살아갈 수 있도록 도와주소서.

다른 사람들을 향한 사랑이라는 “더 큰 그림”을 언제 가장 쉽게 잊어버립니까? 우리가 다같이 상처받은 존재이며 그래서 예수님의 사랑이 필요하다는 사실을 무엇이 다시 깨닫게 해줍니까?

HOTEL CORONA

The Dan Hotel in Jerusalem became known by a different name in 2020—“Hotel Corona.” The government dedicated the hotel to patients recovering from COVID-19, and the hotel became known as a rare site of joy and unity during a difficult time. Since the residents already had the virus, they were free to sing, dance, and laugh together. And they did! In a country where tensions between different political and religious groups run high, the shared crisis created a space where people could learn to see each other as human beings first—and even become friends.

It’s natural, normal even, for us to be drawn toward those we see as similar to us, people we suspect share similar experiences and values to our own. But as the apostle Paul often emphasized, the gospel is a challenge to any barriers between human beings that we see as “normal” (2 CORINTHIANS 5:15) . Through the lens of the gospel, we see a bigger picture than our differences—a shared brokenness and a shared longing and need to experience healing in God’s love.

If we believe that “one died for all,” then we can also no longer be content with surface-level assumptions about others. Instead, “Christ’s love compels us” (V. 14) to share His love and mission with those God loves more than we can imagine—all of us.

In hard times, Jesus, thank You for those moments when I see a glimmer of breathtaking beauty through the love and joy of others. Help me to live each day this way, regarding “no one from a worldly point of view.”

나를 보내소서

스웨덴 선교사 에릭 룬드는 1890년대 후반 스페인으로 가서 선교 사역을 하라는 하나님의 부르심을 느꼈을 때 즉시 순종했습니다. 스페인에서의 사역에서 열매는 거의 없었지만, 그는 하나님의 부르심을 확신하고 참고 견뎠습니다. 그러던 어느 날 브라울리오 마니칸이라는 필리핀 사람을 만나 그에게 복음을 전했습니다. 룬드와 마니칸은 함께 필리핀의 한 지역 언어로 성경을 번역했고, 나중에 필리핀에 침례교 선교기지를 최초로 세웠습니다. 이사야 선지자처럼 룬드가 하나님의 부르심에 응답했기 때문에 많은 사람들이 예수님을 믿게 되었습니다.

SEND ME

When Swedish missionary Eric Lund felt called by God to go to Spain to do mission work in the late 1890s, he immediately obeyed. He saw little success there, but persevered in his conviction of God’s calling. One day, he met a Filipino man, Braulio Manikan, and shared the gospel with him. Together, Lund and Manikan translated the Bible into a local Philippine language, and later they started the first Baptist mission station in the Philippines. Many would turn to Jesus—all because Lund, like the prophet Isaiah, responded to God’s call.

In Isaiah 6:8, God asked for a willing person to go to Israel to declare His judgment for the present and hope for the future. Isaiah volunteered boldly: “Here am I. Send me!” He didn’t think he was qualified, for he’d confessed earlier: “I am a man of unclean lips” (V. 5) . But he responded willingly because he’d witnessed God’s holiness, recognized his own sinfulness, and received His cleansing (VV. 1–7) .

Is God calling you to do something for Him? Are you holding back? If so, remember all God has done through Jesus’ death and resurrection. He’s given us the Holy Spirit to help and guide us (JOHN 14:26; 15:26–27) , and He’ll prepare us to answer His call. Like Isaiah, may we respond, “Send me!”

그리스도 안에서 온전해짐

어느 인기 있는 영화에서 성공을 쫓다가 결혼 생활이 파경에 이르게 되는 스포츠 에이전트 역을 맡은 한 배우가 아내 도로시의 마음을 돌려보려고 아내의 눈을 바라보며 이렇게 말합니다. “당신이 나를 온전케 해줘.” 그리스 신화의 한 이야기를 연상시키는 마음이 따뜻해지는 메시지입니다. 그 신화는 우리 각자는 반쪽이기 때문에 다른 반쪽을 반드시 찾아야만 온전한 하나가 된다고 말합니다.

요즘 대중문화는 낭만적인 상대가 우리를 “온전하게 해준다”는 믿음을 갖게 합니다. 하지만 과연 그럴까요? 나는 아이를 가질 수 없어서거나, 아니면 아이들이 있어도 다른 무언가가 없다고 느끼기 때문에 여전히 불완전하다고 느끼는 여러 결혼한 부부를 만나보았습니다. 궁극적으로 어떤 인간도 우리를
온전하게 만들 수 없습니다.

바울 사도는 여기 다른 해결책을 제시합니다. “그 안에는 신성의 모든 충만이 육체로 거하시고 너희도 그 안에서 충만하여졌으니” (골로새서 2:9-10) . 예수님은 단지 우리의 죄를 사하시고 자유롭게 하실 뿐 아니라 하나님의 생명을 우리 삶에 주심으로 우리를 온전케 해주십니다 (13-15절) .

결혼도 좋지만 그것이 우리를 온전한 전체가 되게 할 수 없습니다. 오직 예수님만이 그렇게 하실 수 있습니다. 우리를 온전하게 하기 위해 사람이나 경력, 또는 그 어떤 다른 것을 기대하지 말고, 하나님의 초대를 받아들여 그분의 온전함이 우리의 삶을 점점 더 채워 나가도록 합시다.

COMPLETE IN CHRIST

In a popular film, an actor plays a success-driven sports agent whose marriage begins to crumble. Attempting to win back his wife, Dorothy, he looks into her eyes and says, “You complete me.” It’s a heart-warming message that echoes a tale in Greek philosophy. According to that myth, each of us is a “half” that must find our “other half” to become whole.

The belief that a romantic partner “completes” us is now part of popular culture. But is it true? I talk to many married couples who still feel incomplete because they haven’t been able to have children and others who’ve had kids but feel something else is missing. Ultimately, no human can fully complete us.

The apostle Paul gives another solution. “For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body. So you also are complete through your union with Christ” (COLOSSIANS 2:9–10 NLT) . Jesus doesn’t just forgive us and liberate us, He also completes us by bringing the life of God into our lives (VV. 13–15) .

Marriage is good, but it can’t make us whole. Only Jesus can do that. Instead of expecting a person, career, or anything else to complete us, let’s accept God’s invitation to let His fullness fill our lives more and more.

하나님 안에 안전히 거함

아이들이 십대가 될 때마다 나는 아이들에게 편지를 써주었습니다. 내가 십대였을 때 스스로 자신감과 확신이 없었던 것을 떠올리며, 편지에서 그리스도 안에서의 우리의 정체성에 관해 이야기해주었습니다. 나도 하나님이 사랑하는 그분의 자녀임을 다시 배워야 했었습니다. 편지에서 나는 “네가 누구에게 속했는지를 알면 네가 누구인지를 알게 된다.”고 했습니다. 우리가 하나님이 우리를 만드셨다는 것을 알고 그분의 뜻을 따르기로 헌신한다면, 우리는 하나님이 의도하여 만드신 우리의 모습을 평안한 마음으로 받아들일 수 있습니다. 그리고 우리는 하나님이 매일 그분을 더 닮아가도록 우리를 변화시키신다는 것도 압니다.

하나님의 자녀라는 우리의 정체성에 대해 근본적으로 알려주는 말씀이 신명기 33장 12절입니다. “여호와의 사랑을 입은 자는 그 곁에 안전히 살리로다 여호와께서 그를 날이 마치도록 보호하시고 그로 자기 어깨 사이에 있게 하시리로다.” 모세는 죽기 직전 하나님의 백성들이 약속하신 땅으로 들어가려고
할 때 베냐민 지파에게 그렇게 축복했습니다. 하나님은 그들이 하나님의 사랑을 입은 자들이라는 사실을 언제나 기억하고, 그들이 하나님의 자녀라는 정체성을 갖고 안전히 거하기를 바라셨습니다.

하나님의 자녀라는 우리의 정체성을 아는 것은 십대나 중년이나 노년이나, 누구에게나 똑같이 중요합니다. 하나님이 우리를 창조하셨고 우리를 지켜주신다는 사실을 알면 우리는 안전과 소망과 사랑을 누릴 수 있습니다.

RESTING SECURE IN GOD

I wrote a letter to our children as each became a teenager. In one I talked about our identity in Christ, remembering that when I was a teenager, I felt unsure of myself, lacking confidence. I had to learn that I was God’s beloved—His child. I said in the letter, “Knowing who you are comes down to knowing Whose you are.” For when we understand that God has created us and we commit to following Him, we can be at peace with who He’s made us to be. And we also know that He changes us to be more like Him each day.

A foundational passage from Scripture about our identity as God’s children is Deuteronomy 33:12: “Let the beloved of the Lord rest secure in him, for he shields him all day long, and the one the Lord loves rests between his shoulders.” Just before Moses died, he proclaimed this blessing over the tribe of Benjamin as God’s people prepared to enter the land He’d promised them. God wanted them to always remember that they were His beloved and to rest secure in their identity as His children.

Knowing our identity as God’s children is equally important for everyone—teenagers, those in the middle of life, and those who have lived a long time. When we understand that God created us and watches over us, we can find security, hope, and love.

성령의 도움

대학교 때 친구들과 강의를 가끔 빼먹기는 했지만 기말고사 일주일 전에 있는 크리스 교수님 강의에는 항상 출석했습니다. 그 교수님은 그 강의 시간에 기말고사 문제에 관한 큰 힌트를 꼭 알려주셨기 때문입니다. 왜 그러셨는지 늘 궁금했었는데, 크리스 교수님은 진심으로 우리가 시험을 잘 보기를 원했다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 그는 우리가 그의 높은 기준에 이를 수 있도록 도와주셨던 것입니다. 우리는 강의에 출석해 그 강의를 잘 들어 기말고사를 제대로 준비할 수 있었습니다.

나는 하나님도 그와 같으신 분이라는 생각이 들었습니다. 하나님에게는 양보할 수 없는 그분의 기준이 있지만, 우리가 하나님을 닮기를 간절히 바라시기 때문에 우리가 그 기준에 이르도록 도와주시기 위해 성령님을 보내주셨습니다.

예레미야 3:11-14에서 하나님은 배역한 이스라엘 백성들에게 그들의 죄를 인정하고 하나님께로 돌아오라고 권고하고 계십니다. 그러나 그들이 얼마나 고집스럽고 연약한지 아시는 하나님은 그들을 도와주려고 하셨습니다. 그들의 배역함을 고쳐주시겠다고 약속하시고 (22절) 그들을 가르치고 이끌어줄
목자들을 보내주셨습니다 (15절) .

우리가 얼마나 큰 죄에 빠져 있고 하나님으로부터 얼마나 멀리 떠나 있든지, 하나님은 우리의 믿음 없음을 치유해 주실 준비가 되어 있다는 사실이 얼마나 위안이 되는지 모릅니다! 우리는 단지 우리의 잘못을 인정하고 성령님이 우리 마음을 변화시키는 일을 시작하시도록 하기만 하면 됩니다.

HELP FROM THE HOLY SPIRIT

While my classmates and I used to skip the occasional lecture in university, everyone always made sure to attend Professor Chris’ lecture the week before the year-end exams. That was when he would unfailingly drop big hints about the exam questions he’d set.

I always wondered why he did that, until I realized that Prof Chris genuinely wanted us to do well. He had high standards, but he would help us meet them. All we had to do was show up and listen so we could prepare properly.

It struck me that God is like that too. God can’t compromise His standards, but because He deeply desires us to be like He is, He’s given us the Holy Spirit to help us meet those standards.

In Jeremiah 3:11–14, God urged unfaithful Israel to acknowledge their guilt and return to Him. But knowing how stubborn and weak they were, He would help them. He promised to cure their backsliding ways (V. 22) , and He sent shepherds to teach and guide them (V. 15) .

How comforting it is to know that no matter how big the sin we’re trapped in or how far we’ve turned from God, He’s ready to heal us of our faithlessness! All we need to do is to acknowledge our wrong ways and allow His Holy Spirit to begin changing our hearts.

기도의 사람

우리 가족은 돌아가신 디어킹 할아버지를 신실한 믿음과 기도의 사람으로 기억하고 있습니다. 하지만 처음부터 그랬던 것은 아니었습니다. 고모는 할아버지가 “이제부터 식사 전 하나님께 감사 기도를 드리자.” 라고 가족에게 처음 말씀하셨던 때를 기억합니다. 할아버지의 첫 기도는 결코 유창하지 않았지만, 할아버지는 어떤 때는 하루 종일 기도하기도 하시면서 50년간 기도를 생활화했습니다. 할아버지께서 돌아가셨을 때, 내 남편은 “할아버지는 기도의 사람이셨어요.”라고 하며 “기도하는 손”이라는 이름의 나무를 할머니께 드렸습니다. 하나님을 따르며 매일 하나님과 대화하기로 한 할아버지의 결심이 그를 그리스도의 충실한 종으로 변화시켜 주었습니다.

성경에는 기도에 대한 많은 말씀들이 기록되어 있습니다. 마태복음 6:9-13에서 예수님은 제자들에게 기도의 본을 보여주시면서, 하나님이 누구신지를 진심으로 찬양하며 그분께 나아가라고 가르치셨습니다. 우리는 하나님께 간구할 때 “일용할 양식” (11절) 을 제공해주시는 하나님을 믿어야 합니다.
그리고 우리가 죄를 고백할 때 죄의 용서를 위해, 그리고 시험에 들지 않게 도와달라고 간구해야 합니다 (12-13절) .

하지만 우리의 기도는 “주기도문”에만 머물러 있을 수는 없습니다. 하나님은 우리가 “모든 기도와 간구” (에베소서 6:18) 를 하기를 바라십니다. 기도는 영적 성장에 필수적이며, 매일 하나님과 끊임없이 대화할 수 있는 기회를 제공해 줍니다 (데살로니가전서 5:17-18) .

하나님과 대화하고 싶은 간절한 마음으로 겸허히 하나님께 나아갈 때, 우리가 하나님을 더 잘 알고 사랑할 수 있도록 하나님께서 도와주시기를 간구합니다.

MAN OF PRAYER

My family remembers my Grandpa Dierking as a man of strong faith and prayer. But it wasn’t always so. My aunt recalls the first time her father announced to the family, “We’re going to start giving thanks to God before we eat.” His first prayer was far from eloquent, but Grandpa continued the practice of prayer for the next fifty years, praying often throughout each day. When he died, my husband gave my grandmother a “praying hands” plant, saying, “Grandpa was a man of prayer.” His decision to follow God and talk to Him each day changed him into a faithful servant of Christ.

The Bible has a lot to say about prayer. In Matthew 6:9–13, Jesus gave a pattern for prayer to His followers, teaching them to approach God with sincere praise for who He is. As we bring our requests to God, we trust Him to provide “our daily bread” (V. 11) . As we confess our sins, we ask Him for forgiveness and for help to avoid temptation (VV. 12–13) .

But we aren’t limited to praying the “Lord’s Prayer.” God wants us to pray “all kinds of prayers” on “all occasions” (EPHESIANS 6:18) . Praying is vital for our spiritual growth, and it gives us the opportunity to be in continual conversation with Him every day (1 THESSALONIANS 5:17–18) .

As we approach God with humble hearts that yearn to talk with Him, may He help us know and love Him better.

빈손

로버트는 친구와 아침을 함께 하기로 한 날에 지갑을 가지고 가지 않아 당황했습니다. 그는 음식을 조금이라도 먹어야 할지 아니면 음료수만 시켜야 할지 고민에 빠졌는데, 친구가 돈을 내겠다는 말을 들은 후 마음이 편안해졌습니다. 그는 친구와 함께 아침 식사를 즐겼고, 친구가 기쁜 마음으로 계산서를 지불했습니다.

어쩌면 당신도 이런 난처한 상황에 처하거나, 다른 사람에게서 도움을 받게 되는 경우가 있을 것입니다. 내 몫을 내가 지불하고 싶은 마음이야 당연하겠지만, 때로는 다른 사람의 호의를 겸허히 받아야 하는 경우도 있습니다.

누가복음 15:17-24에서 아들이 아버지를 보고 했던 말을 통해 아들은 어떻게 해서라도 그의 죗값을 치러야 한다고 생각한 것을 알 수 있습니다. “지금부터는 아버지의 아들이라 일컬음을 감당하지 못하겠나이다 나를 품꾼의 하나로 보소서” (19절) . ‘품꾼’이라고요?’ 그의 아버지에게는 말도 안되는
일이었습니다! 아버지의 눈에 그는 집으로 다시 돌아온 너무도 사랑하는 아들이었습니다. 그랬기에 아버지는 그를 보고 측은히 여겨 달려가 목을 안고 입을 맞추었습니다 (20절) . 얼마나 위대한 복음의 한 장면입니까! 이것은 예수님의 죽으심으로 빈손인 우리를 두 팔 벌려 맞아 주시는 사랑의 하나님
아버지를 상기시켜 줍니다. 한 찬송가 작가는 이것을 이렇게 표현했습니다.

“빈손 들고 앞에 가 십자가를 붙드네.”

EMPTY HANDS

Robert was embarrassed when he showed up for a breakfast meeting and realized he’d forgotten his wallet. It bothered him to the point that he pondered whether he should eat at all or simply get something to drink. After some convincing from his friend, he relaxed his resistance. He and his friend enjoyed their entrees, and his friend gladly paid the bill.

Perhaps you can identify with this dilemma or some other situation that puts you on the receiving end. Wanting to pay our own way is normal, but there are occasions when we must humbly receive what’s graciously being given.

Some kind of payback may have been what the younger son had in mind in Luke 15:17–24 as he contemplated what he would say to his father. “I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants” (V. 19) . Hired servant? His father would have no such thing! In his father’s eyes, he was a much-loved son who’d come home. As such he was met with a father’s embrace and an affectionate kiss (V. 20) . What a grand gospel picture! It reminds us that by Jesus’ death He revealed a loving Father who welcomes
emptyhanded children with open arms. One hymn writer expressed it like this: “Nothing in my hand I bring, simply to thy cross I cling.”

성경이라는 큰 이야기

콜린에게 배달된 박스 안에는 프로젝트를 위해 주문한 스테인드글라스 조각들 대신 온전한 전체 창문이 들어있었습니다. 그 창문이 원래 어디 것이었는지 조사해 보니, 제2차 세계 대전 때 폭격으로부터 보호하기 위해서 교회에서 뜯어낸 것임을 알게 되었습니다. 콜린은 그 작품의 높은 수준과 그 “조각들”이 만들어내고 있는 매우 아름다운 그림에 경탄했습니다.

솔직히 말해, 족보가 나열된 성경의 장들을 읽을 때 그것들이 성경이라는 더 큰 그림에 어떻게 들어맞는지 바로 알 수 없을 때가 있습니다. 셈, 셀라, 에벨, 나홀과 데라 같은 익숙하지 않은 이름들과 그들 가족들의 계보가 반복되는 창세기 11장의 경우가 그렇습니다 (10-32절) . 이런 구절들을 만나면 대충 훑어보고, 성경의 이야기를 이해하는 나의 “창”에 더 쉽게 들어맞는 친숙한 내용이 있는 부분으로 건너뛰고 싶은 충동을 자주 느낍니다.

THE BIG STORY OF THE BIBLE

When Colin opened the box of stained-glass pieces he’d purchased, instead of finding the fragments he’d ordered for a project, he discovered intact, whole windows. He sleuthed out the windows’ origin and learned they’d been removed from a church to protect them from World War II
bombings. Colin marveled at the quality of work and how the “fragments” formed a beautiful picture.

If I’m honest, there are times when I open particular passages of the Bible—such as chapters containing lists of genealogies—and I don’t immediately see how they fit within the bigger picture of Scripture. Such is the case with Genesis 11—a chapter that contains a repetitive cadence of unfamiliar names and their families, such as Shem, Shelah, Eber, Nahor, and Terah (VV. 10–32) . I’m often tempted to gloss over these sections and skip to a part that contains something that feels familiar and fits more easily into my “window” of understanding of the Bible’s narrative.

Since “all Scripture is God-breathed and is useful” (2 TIMOTHY 3:16) , the Holy Spirit can help us better understand how a fragment fits into the whole, opening our eyes to see, for example, how Shelah is related to Abram (GENESIS 11:12–26) , the ancestor of David and—more importantly—Jesus (MATTHEW 1:2, 6, 16) . He delights in surprising us with the treasure of a perfectly intact window where even the smaller parts reveal the story of God’s mission throughout the Bible.

고쳐야 할 시간

집내부를 새롭게 단장하려고 할 때였습니다. 방에 페인트 칠을 하려고 준비하고 있던 바로 그때 주 정부가 코로나바이러스 대유행 때문에 집 수리에 필요한 여러 자재들의 판매가 곧 중지될 예정이라고 발표 했습니다. 그 발표를 듣자마자 가게로 달려가 필요한 물품들을 구입했습니다. 적절한 물품이 없으면 리모델링을 할 수 없습니다.

바울이 에베소서 4장을 쓸 때 어느 정도는 리모델링 프로젝트를 염두에 두고 있었습니다. 그러나 바울이 말했던 변화는 겉모습의 변화를 훨씬 넘어서는 것이었습니다. 우리가 예수님을 구주로 믿어 새로운 피조물이 된다고 하지만, 여전히 성령님이 하셔야 할 일이 남아 있습니다. 성령님이 “의와 진리의 거룩함” (에베소서 4:24) 을 이루기 위해서는 많은 시간과 사역이 필요합니다.

FIX UP TIME

I t was time to give the inside of our home a fresh, new look. But just as I’d begun prepping a room for painting, our state government announced it would be halting the sale of many home improvement items due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As soon as I heard the announcement, I rushed to the store and purchased the essential materials. You simply can’t remodel without the proper supplies.

Paul had a bit of a remodeling project in mind when he wrote Ephesians 4. But the changes he was talking about went far beyond superficial alterations. Even though trusting Jesus as Savior makes us a new creation, there’s still some ongoing work the Spirit needs to do. And it takes time and work for Him to accomplish “true righteousness and holiness” (EPHESIANS 4:24) .

The presence of the Spirit makes needed changes on the inside that can help us reflect Jesus in our words and actions. He helps us replace lying with speaking “truthfully” (V. 25) . He guides us to avoid sin in regard to anger (V. 26) . And He directs us to speak words that are “helpful for building others up” (V. 29) . These Spiritcontrolled actions are part of the internal change that’s manifested in things like kindness, compassion, and forgiveness (V. 32) . The Spirit works in us to enable us to imitate Jesus Himself and reflect the heart of our heavenly Father (V. 24; 5:1) .

예수님을 전하자

드와이트 무디(1837-1899)가 그리스도를 믿은 지 얼마 안 되었을 때, 이 복음전도자는 매일 하루에 적어도 한 사람에게 하나님의 복음을 전하겠다고 결심했습니다. 그러나 바쁜 날에는 가끔 그 결심을 밤늦게까지 잊어버리곤 했습니다. 어느 날 밤에는 침대에 누워서야 그 결심이 생각났습니다. 그는 밖으로 나가면서 ‘이렇게 비가 쏟아지는 날엔 아무도 없겠지.’라고 생각했습니다. 바로 그때 한 남자가 길을 걷고 있는 것이 보였습니다. 무디는 서둘러 그 사람에게 다가가서 자기 우산을 같이 써서 비를 피하지 않겠냐고 물었습니다. 그가 그러겠다고 하자 무디는 이렇게 물었습니다. “당신은 풍랑이 불어올 때 피할 피난처가 있습니까? 제가 예수님에 대해서 말씀드려도 될까요?”

무디는 주님이 우리를 죄의 결과로부터 어떻게 구해주셨는지 전할 준비가 몸에 배어 있었습니다. 그는 하나님께서 이스라엘 백성들에게 하신, 하나님의 이름을 선포하고 “그 행하심을 만국 중에 선포하라”(이사야 12:4)는 지시에 순종하였습니다. 하나님의 백성들은 “그 이름이 높다 하라”는 말씀을 선포할 뿐만 아니라(4절), 하나님이 어떻게 “[그들의] 구원이 되셨는지”도 전하도록 부름을 받았습니다(2절). 여러 세기가 지난 지금, 우리도 예수님께서 육신으로 오셔서 십자가에서 돌아가시고 다시 살아나신 놀라운 일들을 전하라는 부름을 받고 있습니다.

무디가 그랬던 것처럼, 누군가가 자신의 편안한 삶을 희생하고 우리에게 예수님을 전해주었기에 우리도 하나님의 사랑을 듣게 되었는지도 모릅니다. 우리도 우리 각자의 방식으로, 다른 사람에게 우리를 구원해주신 분에 대해 알려줄 수 있습니다.

SHARING JESUS

Shortly after Dwight Moody (1837–99) came to faith in Christ, the evangelist resolved not to let a day pass without sharing God’s good news with at least one person. On busy days, he’d sometimes forget his resolution until late. One night, he was in bed before he remembered. As he stepped outside, he thought, No one will be out in this pouring rain. Just then he saw a man walking down the street. Moody rushed over and asked to stand under his umbrella to avoid the rain. When granted permission, he asked, “Have you any shelter in the time of storm? Could I tell you about Jesus?”

Moody embodied a readiness to share how God saves us from the consequences of our sins. He obeyed God’s instructions to the Israelites to proclaim His name and “make known among the nations what he has done” (ISAIAH 12:4). Not only were God’s people called to “proclaim that his name is exalted” (V. 4), but they were also to share how He had “become [their] salvation” (V. 2). Centuries later, our call remains to tell the wonders of Jesus becoming a man, dying on the cross, and rising again.

Perhaps we heard about God’s love when, as Moody did, someone left their comfort zone to talk with us about Jesus. And we too, each in our own way, can let someone know about the One who saves. AMY BOUCHER PYE
