지금부터 백 년 후

시나리오 작가인 로드 설링은 1975년에 “지금부터 백 년 후에도 사람들이 나를 기억하면 좋겠어요.”라고 말했습니다. TV 시리즈 ‘환상 특급’을 만든 설링은 사람들이 자신에 관해 “그는 작가였지.”라고 말해주길 원했습니다. 무언가 우리 삶에 의미와 영원함을 부여해주는 유산을 남기고 싶어 했던 설링의 바람에 우리도 대부분 공감할 수 있습니다.

욥의 이야기는 삶의 덧없는 날들 속에서 의미를 찾으려고 씨름하는 한 사람을 보여줍니다. 그는 한 순간에 자신의 소유물뿐만 아니라 가장 소중한 자녀들까지 빼 앗 겼 습 니 다 . 게다가 친구들은 그에게 그렇게 된 것이 ‘당연하다’고 비난했습니다. 욥은 “나의 말이 곧 기록되었으면, 책에 씌어졌으면, 철필과 납으로 영원히 돌에 새겨졌으면 좋겠노라”(욥기 19:23-24)고 부르짖었습니다.

욥의 말은 정말로 “영원히 돌에 새겨졌습니다.” 바로 성경 안에 말입니다. 하지만 욥은 후세에 남길 유산보다도 더 큰 의미가 그의 삶에 필요했습니다. 그는 하나님의 성품에서 그것을 찾았습니다. 욥이 선포합니다. “내가 알기에는 나의 대속자가 살아 계시니 마침내 그가 땅 위에 서실 것이라”(19:25). 이것을 알게 된 그는 올바른 것을
사모하게 되었습니다. 욥은 말합니다. “내 눈이 그를 보리니......내 마음이 한없이 설레는구나!”(27절, 현대인의 성경).

욥은 자기가 기대했던 것은 끝내 얻지 못했지만, 그보다 훨씬 더 큰 것을 찾았습니다. 모든 의미와 영원함의 근원이신 주님을 발견한 것입니다(42:1-6).

A Hundred Years from Now

“I just want people to remember me a hundred years from now,” said screenwriter Rod Serling in 1975. Creator of the TV series The Twilight Zone, Serling wanted people to say of him, “He was a writer.” Most of us can identify with Serling’s desire to leave a legacy—something to give our lives a sense of meaning and permanence.

The story of Job shows us a man struggling with meaning amid life’s fleeting days. In a moment, not just his possessions but those most precious to him, his children, were taken. Then his friends accused him of deserving this fate. Job cried out: “Oh, that my words were recorded, that they were written on a scroll, that they were inscribed with an iron tool on lead, or engraved in rock forever!” (JOB 19:23–24).

Job’s words have been “engraved in rock forever.” We have them in the Bible. Yet Job needed even more meaning in his life than the legacy he’d leave behind. He discovered it in the character of God. “I know that my redeemer lives,” Job declared, “and that in the end he will stand on the earth” (19:25). This knowledge gave him the right longing. “I myself will see him,” Job said. “How my heart yearns within me!” (V. 27).

In the end, Job didn’t find what he expected. He found much more—the Source of all meaning and permanence (42:1–6). - TIM GUSTAFSON

익명의 배달

투명한 유리 꽃병에 담긴 종 모양의 백합과 핑크색 튤립과 노란 수선화가 현관문에서 킴을 반갑게 맞이해 주었습니다. 지난 7개월 동안 익명의 성도가 동네 꽃집에서 아름다운 꽃다발을 킴에게 보내주었습니다. 그 선물은 격려의 내용이 담긴 성경말씀과 함께 매달 배달되었고, “예수님 사랑으로”라고 서명이 되어 있었습니다.

킴은 이 익명의 배달에 관한 사진을 페이스북에 올렸습니다. 그녀는 꽃들을 보며 누군가의 친절에 감사할 수 있었고, 또한 하나님께서 그의 백성을 통해 사랑을 표현하시는 방식도 알게 되었습니다. 킴이 불치의 병과 싸우면서 하나님을 신뢰해 가는 동안 하나님은 여러 화사한 꽃들과 손 편지를 보내어 그녀를 긍휼히 여기신다는 것을 확실히 알게 하셨습니다.

익명으로 보내는 것에는 예수님께서 그의 백성들에게 베풀 때 품으라고 권면하신 그 마음가짐이 담겨 있습니다. 주님은 의로운 행위를 남에게 “보이려고” 하는 것을 경고하십니다(마태복음 6:1). 선행은 하나님이 우리에게 행하신 모든 것에 감사하는 마음에서 넘쳐흐르는 경배의 표현이어야 합니다. 칭찬을 바라거나 기대하는 마음으로 자신의 선행을 부각시키면 모든 선한 것을 주시는 예수님께 초점을 맞추지 못하게 됩니다.

우리가 선한 의도로 베풀 때 하나님께서 아십니다(4절). 하나님은 단지 우리가 사랑하는 마음에서 선행을 베풀고 그분께 영광과 존귀와 찬양을 드리는 것을 원하십니다.

Secret Delivery

A clear, glass vase with bell-shaped lilies of the valley, pink tulips, and yellow daffodils greeted Kim at her front door. For seven months, an anonymous believer in Jesus sent Kim beautiful bouquets from a local flower shop. Each monthly gift arrived with a note filled with scriptural encouragement and signed: “Love, Jesus.”

Kim shared photos of these secret deliveries on Facebook. The flowers gave her opportunity to celebrate an individual’s kindness and to acknowledge the way God expressed His love to her through His people. As she trusted Him through her battle with a terminal disease, every colorful blossom and handwritten note affirmed God’s loving compassion for her.

The sender’s anonymity reflects the heart motive Jesus encourages His people to adopt when giving. He warns against practicing righteous acts “to be seen” by others (MATTHEW 6:1). Good deeds are intended to be expressions of worship overflowing from hearts grateful for all God’s done for us. Highlighting our own generosity with the hope or expectation of being honored can take the focus off the Giver of all good things—Jesus.

God knows when we give with good intentions (V. 4). He simply wants our generosity motivated by love as we give Him the glory, the honor, and the praise. - XOCHITL DIXON

신비한 조력자

루이즈는 근육위축증을 앓고 있습니다. 그녀는 어느 날 기차역에서 나오다가 엘리베이터나 에스컬레이터도 없는 높은 계단을 만났습니다. 막 울음이 터지려는 순간 한 남자가 갑자기 나타나서 그녀의 가방을 들고 계단을 오를 수 있도록 차분히 도와주었습니다. 그녀가 돌아서서 감사의 말을 전하려고 했지만 그 남자는 벌써 사라졌습니다.

마이클은 미팅에 늦었습니다. 깨어진 관계 때문에 이미 스트레스를 받고 있었던 그는 런던의 교통체증과 씨름하던 중 자동차 타이어마저 펑크가 났습니다. 속수무책으로 빗속에 서 있는데 사람들 속에서 한 남자가 갑자기 나타나더니 트렁크에서 공구를 꺼내 차를 올려서 바퀴를 교체해 주었습니다. 마이클이 감사하다는 말을 전하려고 돌아봤을 때 그는 이미 가버리고 없었습니다.

이 신비한 조력자들은 과연 누구였을까요? 우연히 만난 친절한 사람이었을까요, 아니면 그 이상의 무엇이었을까요?

우리가 잘 알고 있는 빛나고 날개가 달린 천사의 모습은 사실 절반만 맞는 내용입니다. 어떤 때는 그런 모습으로 나타나지만 (이사야 6:2; 마태복음 28:3), 어떤 때는 더러운 발과 굶주린 모습으로 나타나서(창세기 18:1-5) 일반 사람들로 쉽게 오인됩니다(사사기 13:16). 히브리서 기자는 낯선 이들에게 환대를 베풀다가 우리도 모르는 사이에 천사를 대접할 수도 있다고 했습니다(13:2).

루이즈와 마이클을 도운 사람들이 천사였는지 우리는 알 수 없습니다. 그러나 말씀에 따르면 그들이 천사였을 수도 있습니다. 천사들은 지금도 하나님의 백성을 돕는 일을 하고 있습니다(히브리서 1:14). 그리고 그들은 길에서 만나는 사람처럼 아주 평범한 모습으로 나타날 수 있습니다.

Mysterious Helpers

Louise suffers from muscular dystrophy. While trying to exit a train station one day, she found herself facing a large flight of stairs without an elevator or escalator. On the verge of tears, Louise saw a man suddenly appear, pick up her bag, and gently help her up the stairs. When she turned to thank him, he was gone.

Michael was late for a meeting. Already stressed from a relationship breakdown, he started battling London’s traffic only to get a flat tire. As he stood helplessly in the rain, a man stepped out of the crowd, opened the boot (trunk), jacked up the car, and changed the wheel. When Michael turned to thank him, he was gone.

Who were these mysterious helpers? Kind strangers, or something more?

The popular image we have of angels as radiant or winged creatures is only half true. While some appear this way (ISAIAH 6:2; MATTHEW 28:3), others come with dusty feet, ready for a meal (GENESIS 18:1–5) and are easily mistaken for everyday people (JUDGES 13:16). The writer of Hebrews says that by showing hospitality to strangers, we can entertain angels without realizing it (13:2).

We don’t know if Louise and Michael’s helpers were angels. But according to Scripture, they could have been. Angels are at work right now, helping God’s people (HEBREWS 1:14). And they can appear as ordinary as a person on the street. - SHERIDAN VOYSEY

빛을 비추는 사람

스티븐은 부모님께 매일 학교에 일찍 가야한다고 말했지만 어떤 이유에서인지 왜 꼭 일찍 가야 하는지는 설명하지 않았습니다. 그럼에도 그의 부모는 그가 노스뷰 고등학교에 매일 아침 7시15분까지 도착할 수 있도록 해주었습니다.

스티븐은 11학년이었던 어느 겨울날 안타깝게도 교통사고로 목숨을 잃었습니다. 나중에 그의 부모는 왜 그가 학교에 일찍 갔었는지 알게 되었습니다. 그는 몇몇 친구들과 함께 매일 아침 학교 정문에 모여서 다른 학생들이 등교할 때 웃으며 손을 흔들고 반갑게 인사하면서 그들을 맞이했던 것입니다. 그 일은 학교에서 인기가 없는 아이들까지 모든 학생들이 환영 받고 한 일원처럼 느낄 수 있게 해주었습니다.

예수님을 믿었던 스티븐은 주님의 기쁨을 절실히 필요로 하는 이들에게 그 기쁨을 나누고 싶었던 것입니다. 그의 본보기는 그리스도의 사랑의 빛을 비추는 가장 좋은 한 가지 방법은 친절한 행동과 영접하는 마음에서 나온다는 것을 일깨워줍니다.

예수님은 마태복음 5:14-16에서 우리가 주님 안에서 “세상의 빛”이며, “산 위에 있는 동네”(14절)라고 밝히 말씀하십니다. 고대 도시들은 주로 하얀 석회암으로 지어져 강한 햇빛을 반사할 때 정말 눈에 잘 띄었습니다. 우리도 숨으려 하지 않고 “집 안 모든 사람에게” 빛을 비출 수 있기를 바랍니다(15절).

그리고 이같이 “[우리] 빛이 사람 앞에 비치게 하여”(16절) 그들도 그리스도의 받아주시는 사랑을 체험할 수 있기를 소원합니다.

Shining the Light

Stephen told his parents that he needed to get to school early every day, but for some reason he never explained why it was so important. Yet they made sure he arrived at Northview High School by 7:15 each morning.

On a wintry day during his junior year, Stephen was in a car accident that sadly took his life. Later, his mom and dad found out why he’d been going to school so early. Each morning he and some friends had gathered at the school entrance to greet other students with a smile, a wave, and a kind word. It made all students—even those who weren’t popular—feel welcomed and accepted.

A believer in Jesus, Stephen wanted to share His joy with those who desperately needed it. His example lives on as a reminder that one of the best ways to shine the light of Christ’s love is by gestures of kindness and through a welcoming spirit.

In Matthew 5:14–16, Jesus reveals that in Him we’re “the light of the world” and “a town built on a hill” (V. 14). Ancient cities were often built of white limestone, truly standing out as they reflected the blazing sun. May we choose not to be hidden but to give light “to everyone in the house” (V. 15).

And as we “let [our] light shine before others” (V. 16), may they experience the welcoming love of Christ. - DAVE BRANON

완벽한 위치

과학자들은 지구가 태양이 주는 열의 혜택을 누리기에 딱 알맞은 거리에 있다는 것을 알고 있습니다. 조금만 더 가까워도 금성의 경우처럼 모든 물이 증발했을 것이고, 아주 조금만 멀어져도 화성에서처럼 모든 것이 얼어붙었을 것입니다. 또한 지구는 적절한 양의 중력을 만들기에 딱 알맞은 크기입니다. 중력이 더 작았다면 달과 같이 전체가 황량한 무중력 상태가 되었을 것이고, 반면 중력이 더 컸다면 목성과 같이 생명체를 질식시키는 독가스에 갇히게 되었을 것입니다.

우리의 세계를 구성하는 복잡한 물리적, 화학적, 생물학적 상호작용에는 정교한 설계자의 손길이 담겨 있습니다. 하나님이 욥에게 우리의 이해의 한계를 넘어서는 것에 대해 말씀하실 때 이 정교한 솜씨를 엿볼 수 있습니다. 하나님은 이렇게 물으십니다. “내가 땅의 기초를 놓을 때에 네가 어디 있었느냐...... 누가 그것의 도량법을 정하였는지, 누가 그 줄을 그것의 위에 띄웠는지 네가 아느냐 그것의 주추는 무엇 위에 세웠으며 그 모퉁잇돌을 누가 놓았느냐”(욥기 38:4-6).

이 창조의 광대함을 잠깐 보는 것만으로도 우리는 지구의 거대한 대양이 “모태에서 터져 나올 때에 문으로 그것을 가두고...... 네가 여기까지 오고 더 넘어가지 못한다”(8-11절)고 하신 분 앞에 절하는 것에 가히 경이로움을 느낍니다. 그 경이로움 속에서 새벽별과 함께 노래하고 천사들과 함께 기쁨의 소리를 지르시기를 바랍니다(7절). 우리가 하나님을 알고 신뢰할 수 있도록 우리를 위해 이 오묘한 세계가 만들어졌기 때문입니다.

Perfectly Placed

Scientists know our planet is precisely the right distance from the sun to benefit from its heat. A little closer and all the water would evaporate, as on Venus. Only a bit farther and everything would freeze like it does on Mars. Earth is also just the right size to generate the right amount of gravity. Less would make everything weightlessly sterile like our moon, while more gravity would trap poisonous gases that suffocate life as on Jupiter.

The intricate physical, chemical, and biological interactions that comprise our world bear the imprint of a sophisticated Designer. We catch a glimpse of this complex craftsmanship when God speaks to Job about things beyond our understanding. “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?” God asks. “Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone?” (JOB 38:4–6).

This glimpse of creation’s magnitude causes us to wonder at Earth’s mighty oceans bowing before the One who “shut up the sea behind doors when it burst forth from the womb, . . .[who said] ‘This far you may come and no farther’ ” (VV. 8–11). In wonder may we sing with the morning stars and shout for joy with the angels (V. 7), for this elaborate world was made for us that we might know and trust God. REMI OYEDELE

기다리신 하나님

데니즈 레버토브가 유명한 시인이 되기 오래 전 겨우 12살 나이 때 대담하게도 자기의 시집을 위대한 시인 T. S. 엘리엇에게 보냈습니다. 그리고는 답장을 기다렸습니다. 그런데 놀랍게도 엘리엇이 손수 격려 편지 두 장을 써서 보내주었습니다. 그녀는 시집 ‘시냇물과 사파이어’ 서문에서 그 시들이 어떻게 “불가지론에서 기독교 신앙으로 바뀌는 자기 모습을 차례로 보여주는지”를 설명했습니다. 그래서 나중에 쓴 시(“수태고지”)에서 하나님을 향한 마리아의 헌신을 이야기한 부분은 큰 감동을 줍니다. 성령께서 마리아를 강압하지 않으시고 마리아의 자유의지로 아기 그리스도를 받아들이기를 원하셨던 주님의 뜻을 언급하면서, “기다리신 하나님”이라는 두 단어가 시의 중심에 빛나고 있습니다.

레버토브는 마리아의 이야기에서 자신의 모습을 보았습니다. 하나님은 그녀를 깊이 사랑하며 기다리셨습니다. 그 어떤 것도 강요하지 않고 기다리셨습니다. 이사야도 이 같은 사실을 기록하며 하나님께서 어떻게 이스라엘에게 깊은 사랑을 부어 주시려고 그렇게 고대하며 기다리셨는지를 기록했습니다. “여호와께서 기다리시나니 이는 너희에게 은혜를 베풀려 하심이요......너희를 긍휼히 여기려 하심이라”(30:18). 하나님은 그의 백성에게 자비를 부어 주실 준비가 되어 있으셨지만, 그분께서 주시려는 것을 그들이 기꺼이 받으려할 때까지 ‘기다리셨습니다’ (19절).

세상의 구원자이신 우리 창조주께서 우리가 ‘그분’을 받아 들이기를 기다리신다는 것은 놀라운 일입니다. 우리를 아주 쉽게 이기실 수 있는 하나님께서 겸손하게 인내를 행하십니다. 거룩하신
분께서 우리를 기다리십니다.

God Waited

When Denise Levertov was just twelve, long before she became a renowned poet, she had the gumption to mail a package of poetry to the great poet T. S. Eliot. She then waited for a reply. Surprisingly, Eliot sent two pages of handwritten encouragement. In the preface to her collection The Stream and the Sapphire, she explained how the poems “trace [her] own movement from agnosticism to Christian faith.” It’s powerful, then, to recognize how one of the later poems (“Annunciation”) narrates Mary’s surrender to God. Noting the Holy Spirit’s refusal to overwhelm Mary and His desire for Mary to freely receive the Christ child, these two words blaze at the poem’s center: “God waited.”

In Mary’s story, Levertov recognized her own. God waited, eager to love her. He would not force anything upon her. He waited. Isaiah described this same reality, how God stood ready, eager with anticipation, to shower Israel with tender love. “The Lord longs to be gracious to you . . . to show you compassion” (30:18). He was ready to flood His people with kindness, and yet God waited for them to willingly receive what He offered (V. 19).

It’s a wonder that our Creator, the Savior of the world, chooses to wait for us to welcome Him. The God who could so easily overpower us practices humble patience. The Holy One waits for us. WINN COLLIER

우리에게 유익한 것

2016년에 전 세계 사람들은 대략 982억 달러의 초콜릿을 소비했습니다. 참으로 엄청난 액수이지만 사실은 그렇게 놀랄 일이 아닙니다. 초콜릿은 역시 맛이 있어 사람들이 즐겨 먹기 때문입니다. 이 달콤한 특식이 건강에도 상당히 유익한 것으로 밝혀지자 세계가 함께 기뻐했습니다. 초콜릿에는 노화와 심장질환 예방에 도움을 주는 몸에 유익한 플라보노이드라는 성분이 들어 있습니다. 이렇게 사람들이 잘 받아들이고 관심을 보인 건강 처방은 이제껏 없었습니다(물론 적절한 양에 한해서지요!).

솔로몬은 우리가 투자할 만한 또 다른 “달콤한 것”이 있다고 하였습니다. 바로 지혜입니다. 그는 아들에게 “이것이 좋으니라”(잠언 24:13)라고 하며 꿀을 먹기를 권하면서 그 달콤함을 지혜에 비교했습니다. 성경말씀 속에 들어있는 하나님의 지혜를 먹고 사는 사람은 그것이 심령에 달콤할 뿐 아니라 가르치고 훈련하는데 유익하여 우리가 살면서 이루어야 할 “모든 선한 일”을 할 수 있게 준비시킨다는 것을 알게 됩니다 (디모데후서 3:16-17).

지혜는 현명한 선택을 하게 해주고 주변 세상을 잘 이해할 수 있게 합니다. 솔로몬이 아들에게 바랐던 것처럼 지혜는 애써 키우고 사랑하는 사람들과 나눌 가치가 있습니다. 우리는 성경에 있는 하나님의 지혜를 기쁘게 누리며 살 수 있습니다. 그것은 무제한으로 즐길 수 있는 달콤한 특식이며, 실제로 우리에게 그렇게 누리라고 하십니다! 하나님, 달콤한 말씀을 주셔서 감사합니다!

Good for You

People the world over spent an estimated $98.2 billion on chocolate in 2016. The number is staggering, yet at the same time not all that surprising. Chocolate, after all, tastes delicious and we enjoy consuming it. So the world rejoiced collectively when the sweet treat was found to have significant health benefits as well. Chocolate contains flavonoids that help safeguard the body against aging and heart disease. Never has a prescription for health been so well received or heeded (in moderation, of course!).

Solomon suggested there’s another “sweet” worthy of our investment: wisdom. He recommended his son eat honey “for it is good” (PROVERBS 24:13) and compared its sweetness to wisdom. The person who feeds on God’s wisdom in Scripture finds it not only sweet to the soul but beneficial for teaching and training, equipping us for “every good work” we’ll need to accomplish in life (2 TIMOTHY 3:16–17).

Wisdom is what allows us to make smart choices and understand the world around us. And it’s worth investing in and sharing with those we love—as Solomon wished to do for his son. We can feel good about feasting on God’s wisdom in the Bible. It’s a sweet treat that we can enjoy without limit—in fact, we’re encouraged to! God, thank You for the sweetness of Your Scriptures! 기도하라는 신호

“몇 년 전에 너를 위해 기도해야겠다는 생각이 자주 들었는데 왜 그랬는지 모르겠어.”

오래된 친구가 내게 문자 메시지를 보내면서 자신이 성경책 속에 보관했던 메모를 찍은 사진을 함께 보내주었습니다. “제임스를 위해 기도하기. 마음과 생각과 말을 위해 기도할 것.” 내 이름 옆을 보니 그녀는 세 개의 연도를 적어놓았습니다.

나는 그 연도를 보고 잠시 숨을 가다듬어야 했습니다. 답장을 보내며 그녀가 몇 월에 기도를 시작했는지 물어 보았습니다. “7월 즈음”이었다는 답이 왔습니다.

그때는 내가 해외 유학을 위해 집을 떠날 준비를 하던 달이었습니다. 곧 낯선 문화와 언어 가운데 살아야 하고 어느 때보다도 강한 믿음의 도전을 앞에 둔 때였습니다. 그 메모를 보면서 나는 마음이 담긴 귀한 기도의 선물을 받았다는 것을 깨달았습니다.

친구의 그 따뜻한 마음은 나에게 또 다른 기도하라는 “신호” 를 생각나게 해주었습니다. 바울은 그의 젊은 동역자 디모데에게 이렇게 말했습니다. “그러므로 내가 ‘첫째로’ 권하노니 모든 사람을 위하여 간구와 기도와 도고와 감사를 하라”(디모데전서 2:1). “첫째로” 라는 말은 최우선이라는 뜻입니다. 하나님은 “모든 사람이 구원을 받으며 (예수님에 관한) 진리를 아는 데에 이르기를”(4절) 원하시기 때문에 기도가 정말 중요하다고 바울은 설명합니다.

하나님은 여러 모양으로 드리는 신실한 기도를 통해 역사하셔서 사람들에게 힘을 주시고 하나님께로 가까이 인도하십니다. 누군가가 마음속에 떠오를 때 우리는 그 사람의 상황을 모를 수도 있지만 하나님은 아십니다. 우리가 기도할 때 하나님께서 그를 도우실 것입니다!

Prompted to Pray

“Several years ago I was prompted to pray for you often, and I wonder why.”

That text message from an old friend came with a photo of a note she’d kept in her Bible: “Pray for James. Cover mind, thoughts, words.” Beside my name she’d recorded three separate years.

I looked at the years and caught my breath. I wrote back and asked what month she began to pray. She responded, “Sometime around July.”

That was the month I was preparing to leave home for extended study abroad. I would be facing an unfamiliar culture and language and have my faith challenged like never before. As I looked at the note, I realized I’d received the precious gift of generous prayer.

My friend’s kindness reminded me of another “prompting” to pray, Paul’s instruction to his young missionary friend Timothy: “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people” (1 TIMOTHY 2:1). The phrase “first of all” indicates highest priority. Our prayers matter, Paul explains, because God “wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth” about Jesus (V. 4).

God moves through faithful prayer in countless ways to encourage others and draw them near to Himself. We may not know someone’s circumstances when they come to mind, but God does. And He’ll help that person as we pray! JAMES BANKS

아름다운 열매

“아이들은 원하는 곳[정원]에 씨를 뿌릴 수 있어야 하고 무엇이 돋는지 볼 수 있어야 한다.”고 시티 블러섬의 설립자인 레베카 레모스 오테로는 제안합니다. 본격적인 원예의 모습은 아니지만, 이 말은 씨앗 하나하나가 생명으로 피어날 잠재력이 있다는 사실을 잘 보여줍니다. 2004년 이후, 시티 블러섬은 저소득 지역의 학교와 이웃을 위해 정원을 만들었습니다. 아이들은 정원 가꾸기를 통해 영양에 대해 배우고 직업 기술을 습득합니다. 레베카는 말합니다. “도시 지역에 활기찬 녹색 공간을 갖추는 것은......아이들이 집 밖에서 생산적이며 아름다운 그 무엇을 할 수 있는 길을 마련해줍니다.”

예수님은 “심은 것보다 백배의 결실을” 거둘 수 있는 씨 뿌리는 이야기를 하셨습니다(누가복음 8:8). 그 씨앗은 “좋은 땅”에 심어진 하나님의 좋은 소식인데, 좋은 땅이란 “착하고 좋은 마음으로 말씀을 듣고 지키어 인내로 결실하는 자”(15절)라고 예수님이 설명하셨습니다.

예수님은 우리가 열매 맺는 유일한 방법은 예수님께 계속 붙어 있는 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다(요한복음 15:4). 우리가 예수님의 가르침을 받고 주님께 매달릴 때 성령께서 우리 안에서 “사랑과 희락과 화평과 오래 참음과 자비와 양선과 충성과 온유와 절제” (갈라디아서 5:22-23)의 열매를 맺어 주십니다. 성령님은 우리 안에서 맺어 주신 열매를 다른 사람들의 삶에 영향을 끼치는데 사용하셔서, 그 사람들이 변화되어 자신의 삶에서도 열매를 맺게 하십니다. 이렇게 하여 아름다운 삶이 만들어지는 것입니다.

Beautiful Fruit

“Kids should be able to throw a seed anywhere they want [in the garden] and see what pops up,” suggests Rebecca Lemos-Otero, founder of City Blossoms. While this is not a model for careful gardening, it reflects the reality that each seed has the potential to burst forth with life. Since 2004, City Blossoms has created gardens for schools and neighborhoods in low-income areas. The kids are learning about nutrition and gaining job skills through gardening. Rebecca says, “Having a lively green space in an urban area . . . creates a way for kids to be outside doing something productive and beautiful.”

Jesus told a story about the scattering of seed that had the potential of producing “a hundred times more than was sown” (LUKE 8:8). That seed was God’s good news planted on “good soil,” which He explained is “honest, good-hearted people who hear God’s word, cling to it, and patiently produce a huge harvest” (V. 15 NLT).

The only way we can be fruitful, Jesus said, is to stay connected to Him (JOHN 15:4). As we’re taught by Christ and cling to Him, the Spirit produces in us His fruit of “love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and selfcontrol” (GALATIANS 5:22–23). He uses the fruit He produces in us to touch the lives of others, who are then changed and grow fruit from their own lives. This makes for a beautiful life. ANNE CETAS

계획된 결점

예루살렘의 동쪽에서 솟아나는 천연의 샘이 있습니다. 고대에는 그것이 그 도시의 유일한 상수원이었고 성벽 ‘밖에’ 위치하고 있어서 예루살렘의 가장 큰 취약점이기도 했습니다. 무방비의 샘은 침략자가 샘의 흐름을 돌려 버리거나 막아버리면, 난공불락의 그 도시가 항복할 수밖에 없다는 것을 의미 합니다.

히스기야 왕은 샘에서 도시 안의 “저수지”까지 물이 흘러가도록 1,750 피트(533미터)의 바위 터널을 뚫어 이 약점을 해결했습니다(열왕기하 20:20; 역대하 32:2-4 참조). 그러나 히스기야는 이 모든 일에 있어서 “일이 이렇게 되도록 하신 분을 의지하지 않고, 이 일을 옛적부터 계획하신 분에게는 관심도 없었습니다” (이사야 22:11, 새번역). ‘무슨’ 계획을 말하는 것일까요?

하나님께서 친히 예루살렘의 물 공급이 보호받지 못하도록 “계획하신 것입니다.” 성벽 밖의 샘은 그 도시의 주민들이 구원을 위해 오직 하나님만 의지해야 한다는 점을 끊임없이 상기시켜 주는 상징이었습니다.

우리의 결점이 우리의 유익을 위해 존재할 수 있을까요? 실제로 바울 사도는 예수님의 아름다움과 권능이 그의 약함을 통해 나타났기 때문에 자신의 부족한 약점을 “자랑하겠다”고 말했습니다(고린도후서 12:9-10). 우리도 우리의 부족한 약점 하나 하나마다 하나님이 우리의 능력으로 나타나는 선물로 여길 수 있을까요?

A Designed Deficiency

There’s a natural spring that rises on the east side of the city of Jerusalem. In ancient times it was the city’s only water supply and was located outside the walls. Thus it was the point of Jerusalem’s greatest vulnerability. The exposed spring meant that the city, otherwise impenetrable, could be forced to surrender if an attacker were to divert or dam the spring.

King Hezekiah addressed this weakness by driving a tunnel through 1,750 feet of solid rock from the spring into the city where it flowed into the “Lower Pool” (SEE 2 KINGS 20:20; 2 CHRONICLES 32:2–4). But in all of this, Hezekiah “did not look to the One who made it, or have regard for the One who planned it long ago” (ISAIAH 22:11). Planned what?

God Himself “planned” the city of Jerusalem in such a way that its water supply was unprotected. The spring outside the wall was a constant reminder that the inhabitants of the city must depend solely on Him for their salvation.

Can it be that our deficiencies exist for our good? Indeed, the apostle Paul said that he would “boast” in his limitations, because it was through weakness that the beauty and power of Jesus was seen in him (2 CORINTHIANS 12:9–10). Can we then regard each limitation as a gift that reveals God as our strength? DAVID H. ROPER
