사랑의 세탁

미국 남캘리포니아의 한 작은 교회가 하나님의 사랑을 실제로 표현할 기회를 만들었습니다. 교인들이 동네 빨래방에 모여 재정적으로 어려운 사람들의 옷을 대신 세탁해 준 것입니다. 그들은 함께 옷을 세탁하고 잘 개어 주었으며, 때로는 따뜻한 식사를 대접하거나 식료품을 한 보따리씩 안겨주기도 했습니다.

한 자원봉사자는 그 일에 대한 가장 큰 보람이 “사람들과 실제로 만나 그들의 이야기를 들어주는 것”임을 알았습니다. 예수님과의 관계 때문에, 이 자원봉사자들은 사랑의 말과 행동을 통해 이웃과 진정한 관계를 발전시키는 데 도움을 주면서 그들의 믿음을 실천하는 삶을 살기 원했습니다.

야고보 사도는 신자들이 드러내는 모든 사랑의 섬김이야말로 진정한 믿음의 증거라고 단언합니다. 그는 “행함이 없는 믿음은 그 자체가 죽은 것이라”고 말합니다 (야고보서 2:14-17). 우리가 믿음을 선포함으로 하나님의 자녀가 되지만, 다른 사람들을 섬김으로써 예수님을 섬길 때 비로소 예수님을 믿고 따르는 신자로서 행동하는 것입니다(24절). 믿음과 섬김은 육체와 정신만큼 밀접한 상호의존성을 가지고 있습니다 (26절). 그리스도께서 우리 안에서, 우리를 통해 일하실 때 그리스도의 권능이 아름답게 나타납니다.

십자가에서의 하나님의 희생이 우리를 완전한 사랑으로 깨끗케 한다는 것을 개인적으로 받아들인 후, 우리는 참된 믿음의 충만한 모습으로 우리의 이웃들을 섬길 수 있습니다.

Washed in Love

A small church in Southern California recognized an opportunity to express God’s love in a practical way. Believers in Jesus gathered at a local laundromat to give back to their community by washing clothes for those in financial need. They cleaned and folded clothes together, and sometimes provided a hot meal or bags of groceries for recipients.

One volunteer discovered the greatest reward was in the “actual contact with people . . . hearing their stories.” Because of their relationship with Jesus, these volunteers wanted to live out their faith through loving words and actions that helped them nurture genuine relationships with others.

The apostle James affirms that every act of a professing believer’s loving service is a result of genuine faith. He states that “faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead” (JAMES 2:14–17). Declaring we believe makes us children of God, but it’s when we serve Him by serving others that we act as believers who trust and follow Jesus (V. 24). Faith and service are as closely interdependent as the body and the spirit (V. 26), a beautiful display of the power of Christ as He works in and through us.

After personally accepting that God’s sacrifice on the cross washes us in perfect love, we can respond in authentic faith that overflows into the ways we serve others. XOCHITL DIXON

결코 잊히지 않음

몇 년 동안 힘들게 배운 피아노의 기본기를 보여 달라는 아이들에게 들볶이다가 나는 피아노 앞에 앉아 C장조 음계를 연주하기 시작했습니다. 거의 20년 동안 피아노를 치지 않았기에 나는 내가 기억하고 있다는 사실에 놀랐습니다! 용기를 내어 나는 곧바로 7개의 다른 음계를 하나씩 연주하기 시작했습니다. 충격이었습니다! 여러 해 동안의 연습이 내 손가락의 “기억” 속에 음표와 기법을 깊숙이 새겨 놓아 손가락이 바로 무엇을 해야 할지 알고 있었던 것입니다.

평생 잊히지 않는 것들이 있습니다. 그러나 자녀를 향한 하나님의 사랑은 우리의 희미해지는 어떤 기억보다도 훨씬 깊이 새겨져 있습니다. 사실, 하나님은 자녀들을 정말 잊을 수 없습니다. 이스라엘 민족이 유배되어 하나님에게 버림받았다고 느꼈을 때 그들이 이 말을 들어야 했습니다 (이사야 49:14). 하나님은 이사야를 통해 분명히 대답하셨습니다. “나는 너를 잊지 아니할 것이라”(15절). 그의 백성을 돌보시겠다는 하나님의 약속은 자식을 사랑하는 어머니의 약속보다도 더 확실했습니다.

하나님은 그분의 변함없는 사랑을 이스라엘 백성들에게 확신시키려고 자신의 약속을 그림으로 그려서 보여주셨습니다. “보아라, 내가 네 이름을 내 손바닥에 새겼다”(16절, 새번역). 이는 하나님께서 자녀들을 언제나 알고 계시고, 그들의 이름과 얼굴을 항상 하나님 앞에 두신다는 것을 보여주는 아름다운 이미지입니다.

오늘날에도 우리는 간과되고 잊혀진다고 생각하기 쉽습니다. 그러나 우리가 하나님 손에 “새겨져서” 항상 우리 하나님 아버지께 기억되고 보살핌 받으며 사랑받고 있다는 사실을 기억하니 얼마나 위안이 되는지 모릅니다.

Never Forgotten

Egged on by my children to prove I’d endured years mastering the basics of piano, I sat down and started playing the C Major scale. Having played very little piano in nearly two decades, I was surprised I remembered! Feeling brave, I proceeded to play seven different scales by heart one right after the other. I was shocked! Years of practicing had imprinted the notes and technique so deeply in my fingers’ “memory” that they instantly knew what to do.

There are some things that can never be forgotten. But God’s love for His children is far more deeply imprinted than any of our fading memories—in fact, God can’t forget them. This is what the Israelites needed to hear when the exile left them feeling abandoned by Him (ISAIAH 49:14). His response through Isaiah was unequivocal: “I will not forget you!” (V. 15). God’s promise to care for His people was more certain than a mother’s love for her child.

To assure them of His unchanging love, He gave them a picture of His commitment: “See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands” (V. 16). It’s a beautiful image of God’s constant awareness of His children; their names and faces always before Him.

Still today, we can easily feel overlooked and forgotten. How comforting to remember that we’re “etched” on God’s hands— always remembered, cared for, and loved by our Father. LISA M. SAMRA

하나님 말씀에 이끌려

런던 BBC에서의 폴 아놀드의 첫 방송 작업은 라디오 드라마에서 “걷는 소리”를 내는 것이었습니다. 성우들이 걷는 장면에서 대본을 읽는 동안, 무대 감독인 폴은 걸음 속도를 성우의 목소리와 대사에 세심히 맞추면서 그의 발로 장면에 해당하는 소리를 만들어냈습니다. 그가 설명하는 제일 중요한 점은 드라마에서 성우를 쫓아 잘 따라하면서 “우리 둘이 함께 일하는 것” 입니다.

시편 119편의 기자는 그와 같은 협력의 종교적 버전을 추구하면서 하나님 말씀의 계율에 따라 사는 삶을 강조했습니다. 시편 119편 1절에서처럼 “행위가 온전하여 여호와의 율법을 따라 행하는 자들은 복이 있습니다.” 하나님이 인도하시는 대로 그분의 지시를 따라가면 우리는 순수함을 유지하고(9절) 멸시를 이겨내며(23절) 탐욕에서 벗어날 수 있습니다(36절). 하나님은 우리가 죄악에 저항하고 (61절) 경건한 친구를 만나(63절) 기쁨 속에 살 수 있게(111절) 해주실 것입니다.

신학자 찰스 브리지스는 133절을 이렇게 주석했습니다. “그러므로 이 세상으로 한 걸음 내디딜 때 나는 이렇게 묻습니다. 그것은 그리스도를 나의 완벽한 본보기로 보여주시는 하나님의 말씀이 명한 것인가?”

이 길을 걸어가면 우리는 세상에 예수님을 보여줄 수 있습니다. 부디 우리가 예수님과 아주 가까이 걷게 하셔서 사람들이 우리 안에서 우리의 지도자이자 친구이며 구세주인 주님을 볼 수 있게 도와주소서!

Led by His Word

At the BBC in London, Paul Arnold’s first broadcasting job was making “walking sounds” in radio dramas. While actors read from scripts during a walking scene, Paul as stage manager made corresponding sounds with his feet—careful to match his pace to the actor’s voice and spoken lines. The key challenge, he explained, was yielding to the actor in the story, “so the two of us were working together.”

A divine version of such cooperation was sought by the author of Psalm 119, which emphasizes living by the precepts of God’s Word. As Psalm 119:1 says, “Blessed are those whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the Lord.” Led this way by God and following His instructions, we can remain pure (V. 9), overcome scorn (V. 23), and escape greed (V. 36). He will enable us to resist sin (V. 61), find godly friends (V. 63), and live in joy (V. 111).

Theologian Charles Bridges commented on verse 133: “When I take therefore a step into the world, let me ask—Is it ordered in God’s word, which exhibits Christ as my perfect example?”

Walking this way, we show the world Jesus. May He help us walk so closely with Him that people glimpse in us our Leader, Friend, and Savior! PATRICIA RAYBON

큰 혼란

우리가 봉사하는 여러 가지 이유를 탐구하는 작가 로버트 콜스는 그의 저서 ‘봉사의 부름’에서 다른 사람들에게 봉사하는 나이든 여성의 감동적인 이야기를 들려줍니다. 버스 운전사인 이 할머니는 매일 아이들을 학교에 실어다 주면서 숙제를 물어보고 잘한 일을 칭찬하는 등, 아이들을 아주 잘 돌보았습니다. “나는 이 아이들이 인생에서 성공하는 것을 보고 싶어요.” 그녀는 자기가 그 일을 하는 동기를 그렇게 말했지만, 거기에는 또 다른 이유도 있었습니다.

어렸을 때 들었던 이모의 말이 이 여인의 마음속 깊이 자리 잡았던 것입니다. 그 여인이 콜스에게 한 말입니다. “이모는 우리에게 하나님이 알아줄 만한 일을 해야 한다고 말하곤 했어요. 그렇지 않으면 우리는 큰 혼란 속에서 길을 잃을 거라고 했어요!” 심판 날의 “큰 혼란”을 겪은 후 지옥에 갈 것을 염려했던 이 여인은 “하나님의 관심을 끌” 방법을 고안해 냈습니다. “나의 충성스러운 모습을 하나님이 보실” 수 있도록 교회에 다니고, 하나님이 “내가 하는 일을 다른 사람을 통해 들을” 수 있도록 다른 사람들을 열심히 섬기는 것이었습니다.

나는 그 여인의 말을 읽고 슬픈 생각이 들었습니다. 이 사랑스러운 여인은 자신이 이미 하나님의 관심을 받고 있다는 사실을 왜 몰랐을까요?(마태복음 10:30). 어떻게 예수님이 우리를 위해 큰 혼란을 해결해 주셔서 심판으로부터 영원히 자유롭게 해주셨다는 말을 듣지 못했을까요?(로마서 8:1). 어떻게 그는 구원이 선행으로 살 수 없고 믿는 모든 사람에게 주어지는 선물이라는 것을 알지 못했을까요?(에베소서 2:8-9).

그리스도의 삶과 죽음, 부활은 하나님과 함께 할 우리의 미래를 책임지며, 우리를 자유롭게 하여 다른 사람들을 즐겁게 섬기게 해줍니다.

The Big Shuffle

In The Call of Service, author Robert Coles, exploring our reasons for serving, tells the moving story of an older woman’s service to others. As a bus driver, she showed great care toward the children she drove to school each day—quizzing them on homework and celebrating their successes. “I want to see these kids make it in life,” she said of her motivation. But there was another reason too.

As a youth, the words of an aunt had shaken this woman to the core. “She’d tell us that we had to do something God would notice,” she told Coles, “or else we’d get lost in the big shuffle!” Worried at the prospect of hell after the “big shuffle” of judgment, this woman had devised ways to “get God’s attention”—going to church so “He’d see me being loyal” and working hard to serve others so God might “hear from others what I was doing.”

I grieved reading her words. How had this dear woman never known that she already had God’s attention? (MATTHEW 10:30). How had she not heard that Jesus took care of the big shuffle for us, offering freedom from judgment forever? (ROMANS 8:1). How had she missed that salvation can’t be bought with good deeds but is a gift to anyone who believes? (EPHESIANS 2:8–9).

Christ’s life, death, and resurrection take care of our future with God and set us free to serve others with joy. SHERIDAN VOYSEY

점점 더 많이 베풂

“할아버지 선물 샀어!” 두 살배기 손자가 내 손에 상자를 들이밀며 신나게 소리쳤습니다. “그 애가 혼자 골랐어요.” 아내가 빙그레 웃었습니다.

상자를 열자 아이가 좋아하는 만화 캐릭터의 크리스마스 장식이 있었습니다. “나도 봐도 돼?” 아이가 간절히 바라는 눈길로 물었습니다. 그리고는 저녁 내내 “내” 선물을 가지고 놀았습니다. 그런 손자를 보면서 나는 미소를 지었습니다.

나는 사랑하는 사람들에게 예전에 준 선물들이 생각나서 미소를 지었습니다. 그 중 하나는 고등학교 시절 어느 크리스마스에 내가 형에게 음악 앨범을 주었었는데 그 앨범은 내가 정말 듣고 싶었던 것이었습니다. (그리고 실제로 들었습니다). 나는 오랜 세월이 지난 지금까지 하나님이 여전히 나에게 오셔서 받는 사람을 더 헤아려 가며 베풀라고 가르치시는 것을 깨달았습니다.

베풂은 우리가 점점 더 키워 나가야 할 일입니다. 바울은 이렇게 썼습니다. “여러분은 모든 일에 있어 뛰어납니다...... 여러분은 이 은혜로운 활동에서도 뛰어나야 할 것입니다”(고린도후서 8:7, 새번역). 우리가 가진 모든 것이 하나님에게서 받은 것이라는 것을 알 때 우리의 베풂이 은혜로 가득하게 됩니다. 그리고 하나님은 “주는 것이 받는 것보다 복이 있다”(사도행전 20:35)는 것을 보여주셨습니다.

하나님은 무엇보다도 가장 이기적이지 않은 선물을 우리에게 아낌없이 주셨습니다. 그 선물은 우리의 죄를 위해 십자가에서 돌아가시고 다시 살아나신 하나님의 독생자 예수님이십니다. 이 최고의 선물을 받은 사람은 누구나 측량할 수 없을 만큼 부유한 사람입니다. 우리의 마음이 주님께 맞춰져 있으면, 우리의 손이 다른 사람을 향한 사랑으로 열리게 됩니다.

Growing into Giving

“I got you a present!” my two-year-old grandson shouted excitedly as he pressed a box into my hands. “He picked it out all by himself,” my wife smiled.

I opened the box to find a Christmas ornament of his favorite cartoon character. “Can I see it?” he asked anxiously. Then he played with “my” present for the rest of the evening, and as I watched him, I smiled.

I smiled because I remembered gifts I had given loved ones in the past, like the music album I gave my older brother one Christmas when I was in high school that I really wanted to listen to (and did). And I realized how years later God was still stretching me and teaching me to give more unselfishly.

Giving is something we grow into. Paul wrote, “But since you excel in everything . . . see that you also excel in this grace of giving” (2 CORINTHIANS 8:7). Grace fills our giving as we understand that all we have is from God, and He has shown us “it is more blessed to give than to receive” (ACTS 20:35).

God generously gave us the most unselfish gift of all: His only Son, who would die on a cross for our sins and be raised to life. Any who receive this ultimate gift are rich beyond measure. As our hearts are focused on Him, our hands open in love to others. JAMES BANKS

크리스마스에 온 방문객

1944년 크리스마스이브에 “올드 브링커”라는 남자가 죽음을 앞두고 교도소 병원에 누워 동료 죄수들이 인도하는 자체 크리스마스 예배를 기다리고 있었습니다. “언제 음악이 시작되지?” 그는 수마트라의 문톡 교도소에 함께 수감된 윌리엄 맥두걸에게 물었습니다. “곧” 하고 맥두걸은 대답했습니다. “좋아.” 죽어가는 남자가 대답했습니다. “그럼 천사들의 음악과 그들의 찬양을 비교해볼 수 있겠군.”

수십 년 전에 브링커는 하나님을 믿는 믿음에서 멀어졌지만, 죽음이 가까워지자 자신의 죄를 고백하고 하나님과 화해 했습니다. 시큰둥한 표정으로 다른 사람에게 인사하는 대신 그는 미소를 짓기도 했습니다. 그것을 두고 맥두걸은 “매우 큰 변화였다”라고 말했습니다.

브링커는 11명의 수척한 죄수들로 구성된 합창단이 그의 신청곡인 “고요한 밤 거룩한 밤”을 부른 후 평화롭게 숨을 거두었습니다. 브링커가 다시 한 번 예수님을 따름으로 회개하고 천국에서 하나님과 연합할 것을 안 맥두걸은 “아마 죽음은 늙은 브링커가 반겨 맞이했을 크리스마스에 온 방문객이었을 것”이라고 한마디 했습니다.

브링커가 자신의 죽음을 맞이한 방법은 거룩한 사람 시므온을 떠올려줍니다. 성령님은 그에게 “주의 그리스도를 보기 전에는 죽지 아니하리라”(누가복음 2:26)고 일러주었습니다. 시므온은 성전에서 예수님을 보자 이렇게 소리쳤습니다. “이제 주님께서는......이 종을 세상에서 평안히 떠나가게 해주십니다. 내 눈이 주의 구원을 보았습니다”(29-30절, 새번역).

브링커와 마찬가지로 우리가 함께 나누며 받을 수 있는 가장 큰 크리스마스 선물은 예수님 안에 있는 구원의 믿음입니다.

A Christmas Visitor

On Christmas Eve 1944, a man known as “Old Brinker” lay dying in a prison hospital, waiting for the makeshift Christmas service led by fellow prisoners. “When does the music start?” he asked William McDougall, who was imprisoned with him in Muntok Prison in Sumatra. “Soon,” replied McDougall. “Good,” replied the dying man. “Then I’ll be able to compare them with the angels.”

Although decades earlier Brinker had moved away from his faith in God, in his dying days he confessed his sins and found peace with Him. Instead of greeting others with a sour look, he would smile, which “was quite a transformation,” said McDougall.

Brinker died peacefully after the choir of eleven emaciated prisoners sang his request, “Silent Night.” Knowing that Brinker once again followed Jesus and would be united with God in heaven, McDougall observed, “Perhaps Death had been a welcome Christmas visitor to old Brinker.”

How Brinker anticipated his death reminds me of Simeon, a holy man to whom the Holy Spirit revealed that “he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah” (LUKE 2:26). When Simeon saw Jesus in the temple, he exclaimed, “You may now dismiss your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation” (VV. 29–30).

As with Brinker, the greatest Christmas gift we can receive or share is that of saving faith in Jesus. AMY BOUCHER PYE

어느 크리스마스에 할머니가 나에게 아름다운 진주 목걸이를 주셨습니다. 아름다운 구슬들이 내 목에서 반짝였는데, 어느 날 줄이 끊어져 우리 집 마루 바닥 위에 구슬들이 사방으로 튀고 말았습니다. 나는 바닥 위에 웅크리고 앉아 그 작은 알들을 일일이 주웠습니다. 알 하나하나는 작았습니다. 그런데 보십시오. 그 진주들을 한 줄로 엮어놓으니 정말 놀라운 모습으로 바뀌었습니다!

내가 하나님 말씀에 순종한 ‘예’들은 마치 그 각각의 진주처럼 너무 작아 보입니다. 나는 가끔 놀라운 순종을 보였던 예수님의 어머니 마리아와 나를 비교해 봅니다. 마리아는 메시아를 잉태하리 라는 하나님의 부름을 받았을 때 ‘예’라고 말했습니다. 그녀는 “주의 여종이오니 말씀대로 내게 이루어지이다”(누가복음 1:38)라고 대답했습니다. 마리아는 장차 그녀가 감당해야 할 모든 것을 이해했을까요? 아들을 십자가에 내어줘야 할 더 큰 ‘예’까지 이해했을까요?

천사와 양치기들의 방문 후에, 누가복음 2장 19절은 마리아가 “이 모든 말을 고이 간직하고, 마음속에 곰곰이 되새겼다”(새번역) 고 전해줍니다. ‘고이 간직하다’는 “보관하다”를 의미하고, ‘곰곰이 되새기다’는 “실을 꿰다”를 의미합니다. 누가복음 2장 51절에서 마리아에 관한 그 구절이 또 나옵니다. 과연 마리아는 그녀의 전 생애를 통하여 하나님께 많은 ‘예’로 응답합니다.

마리아의 경우와 마찬가지로, 순종의 요체는 우리가 하나님 아버지의 초대에 순종한 여러 가지 ‘예’들을 한 번에 하나씩 함께 꿰어 나가는 것일지도 모릅니다. 그 ‘예’들이 순종하는 삶이라는 보물로 엮어질 때까지 말입니다.

A String of Yeses

One Christmas, my grandmother gave me a beautiful pearl necklace. The beautiful beads glowed about my neck until one day the string broke. Balls bounced in all directions off our home’s hardwood flooring. Crawling over the planks, I recovered each tiny orb. On their own, they were small. But oh, when strung together, those pearls made such an impression!

Sometimes my yeses to God seem so insignificant—like those individual pearls. I compare myself to Mary, the mother of Jesus who was so fantastically obedient. She said yes when she embraced God’s call for her to carry the Messiah. “‘I am the Lord’s servant,’ Mary answered. ‘May your word to me be fulfilled’” (LUKE 1:38). Did she understand all that would be required of her? That an even bigger yes to relinquishing her Son on the cross loomed ahead?

After the visits of the angels and shepherds, Luke 2:19 tells us that Mary “treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.” Treasure means to “store up.” Ponder means to “thread together.” The phrase is repeated of Mary in Luke 2:51. She would respond with many yeses over her lifetime.

As with Mary, the key to our obedience might be a threading together of various yeses to our Father’s invitations, one at a time, until they string into the treasure of a surrendered life. ELISA MORGAN

아버지의 축복

최근에 우리 교회의 몇몇 사람들(그들의 아버지와 관계가 좋지 않았던 사람들)이 나에게 자기들의 아버지 대신 사랑하는 아버지의 모습으로 자신들을 축복해 달라고 부탁했습니다. 축복하는 동안 나는 너무 높은 기대를 갖거나, 멀리 떨어져 있거나, 다정하게 함께 있으면서 긍정의 말을 해주지 못해 아버지가 자녀에게 상처 준 것에 대해 용서를 구하였으며, 또한 기쁨과 칭찬, 그리고 끝없는 사랑을 축복했습니다. 그러면서 나는 눈물을 흘렸습니다. 아직도 나에게 그런 축복의 말들이 필요하고, 내 아이들에게도 그 말들이 얼마나 필요한지 깨달았기 때문입니다.

성경은 종종 하나님을 우리 아버지 라고 말하는데, 그렇게 부름으로써 우리가 잘못 생각하는 왜곡된 아버지상을 바로 세우게 됩니다. 우리의 영원하신 아 버 지 하 나 님 은 완 전 한 사 랑 을 “우리에게 베푸셔서” 우리를 “하나님의 자녀”로 삼으셨습니다(요한1서 3:1). 하나님의 아들딸이라는 우리의 정체성은 이 불확실하고 두려움을 주는 세상에서 우리를 지탱해주는 근본입니다. 요한은 말합니다. “우리가 지금은 하나님의 자녀라 장래에 어떻게 될지는 아직 나타나지 아니하였으니”(2절). 항상 있을 도전에 직면할 때마다 우리가 진실로 믿어야 할 것은 우리 하나님 아버지께서 우리를 사랑하시고, 필요한 것을 주시며, 결코 멈추지 않으신다는 사실입니다. 하나님은 영감을 받은 요한의 말을 통해, 모든 것이 말대로 이루어지는 그 때에 우리가 주님처럼 될 것이 확실하다고 말씀하십니다(2절).

우리가 근심, 상처, 실패 속에 빠져 있는데도, 좋으신 우리 하나님 아버지는 무한한 사랑의 축복을 말씀하십니다. 하나님이 우리를 그분의 자녀로 만드셨기 때문에 하나님은 우리가 그분에게 속해 있어야 한다고 주장하십니다.

The Father’s Blessing

Recently, several people within our church—those who had experienced poor relationships with their fathers—asked me to stand in as a loving, father figure and offer a blessing over them. The blessing asked forgiveness for the ways a father can hurt his children by setting expectations that are too high or being distant or failing to offer tender presence and affirmation. It also pronounced delight, admiration, and abundant love. As I shared the blessing, I wept. I realized how I still needed to receive such words, and how much my children need them too.

The Scriptures repeatedly speak of God as our Father, a reality reshaping the distorted father images we might have. God, our eternal Father, has “lavished on us” perfect love, making us “children of God” (1 JOHN 3:1). Our identity as God’s sons and daughters grounds us in an uncertain, fear-inducing world. “We are children of God,” John says, even though “what we will be has not yet been made known” (V. 2). Facing ever-present challenges, all we can truly count on is that our Father loves and provides for us and never stops. When everything is said and done, God says through the inspired words of John, we can be certain we’ll be like Him (V. 2).

In the midst of our anxieties, wounds, and failures, our good Father speaks a blessing of inexhaustible love. God insists we belong, for He’s made us His children. WINN COLLIER

주는 자의 기쁨

티클 미 엘모 인형을 기억하십니까? 양배추 아기 인형은요? 퍼비 인형은 어떻습니까? 그들의 공통점이 무엇일까요? 이 인형들은 각각 역사상 가장 인기 있었던 크리스마스 선물 스무 개 가운데 하나입니다. 모노폴리나 닌텐도 게임보이, 위 같은 친숙한 인기품목들도 그 목록에 포함되어 있지요.

우리는 모두 크리스마스에 선물 주는 것을 좋아하지만, 그것은 첫번째 크리스마스 선물을 주신 하나님의 기쁨에 비하면 아무것도 아닙니다. 이 선물은 베들레헴의 구유에서 태어난 아기의 모습으로 왔습니다(누가복음 2:7).

미천한 출생에도 불구하고 아기 예수의 강림은 천사에 의 해 선포 되었습니다. “내가 온 백성에게 미칠 큰 기쁨의 좋은 소식을 너희에게 전하노라 오늘 다윗의 동네에 너희를 위하여 구주가 나셨으니 곧 그리스도 주시니라”(10-11절). 이 놀라운 소식에 이어 “수많은 천군”이 나타나 “하나님을 찬송하여 이르되 지극히 높은 곳에서는 하나님께 영광이요 땅에서는 하나님이 기뻐하신 사람들 중에 평화”라고 하였습니다(13-14절).

이번 크리스마스에는 사랑하는 사람들에게 선물 주는 것을 즐기되, 선물을 주는 이유를 잊지 마십시오. 하나님의 창조물에 대한 그분의 놀라운 은혜가 우리를 죄에서 구하기 위해 그분 자신의 아들이라는 선물로 나타났습니다. 우리가 선물을 주는 이유는 하나님이 주셨기 때문입니다. 감사하는 마음으로 하나님을

The Giver’s Delight

Remember Tickle Me Elmo? Cabbage Patch Kids? The Furby? What do they have in common? Each rank among the twenty most popular Christmas gifts of all time. Also included on the list are familiar favorites such as Monopoly, the Nintendo Game Boy, and Wii.

We all delight in giving gifts at Christmas, but that’s nothing compared to God’s delight in giving the first Christmas gift. This gift came in the form of a baby, born in a Bethlehem manger (LUKE 2:7).

Despite His humble birth, the Child’s arrival was proclaimed by an angel who declared, “I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord” (VV. 10–11). Following this magnificent news, a “heavenly host” appeared, “praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests’” (VV. 13–14).

This Christmas, enjoy giving gifts to your loved ones, but never lose sight of the reason for the giving—the spectacular favor of God on His creation crystallized in the gift of His own Son to save us from our sin. We give because He gave. May we worship Him in gratitude! REMI OYEDELE

실패는 있을 수 없다

“실패는 있을 수 없습니다!” 미국에서 여성 권리에 대한 확고부동한 노선으로 알려진 수잔 앤서니(1820-1906)가 한 말입니다. 끊임없는 비난에 맞서면서 나중에 불법 투표로 체포되어 재판에서 유죄 판결을 받았지만, 앤서니는 자신의 주장이 정당하다고 믿고 여성의 투표권을 얻기 위한 싸움을 절대 포기하지 않겠다고 맹세했습니다. 비록 그녀가 살아서 수고의 결실을 보지 못했지만, 여성 투표권에 대한 그녀의 선언은 마침내 현실이 되었습니다. 1920년 제19차 헌법 개정으로 여성에게 투표권이 주어진 것입니다.

느헤미야에게도 실패는 선택사항이 아니었습니다. 무엇보다 강력한 조력자, 곧 하나님이 계셨기 때문입니다. 예루살렘 성벽 재건이라는 명분을 하나님께서 축복해주시기를 간구한 후, 그는 바벨론에 유배된 후 예루살렘으로 돌아온 사람들과 함께 성벽 재건을 위해 일했습니다. 그 성벽은 사람들을 적들로부터 안전하게 지키는 데 필요했던 것입니다. 하지만, 그 명분에 대한 반대가 기만과 위협의 형태로 나타났습니다. 느헤미야는 반대파들이 그를 단념하도록 내버려두지 않았습니다. 그 일을 반대하는 사람들에게 “나는 중대한 일을 하고 있다”(느헤미야 6:3, 현대인의 성경)고 전한 후, “나를 강하게 하소서”(9절)라고 기도했습니다. 인내로 버틴 덕분에 그 일은 완료되었습니다(15절).

하나님은 느헤미야에게 반대에 맞서 인내할 힘을 주셨습니다. 혹 포기하고 싶은 일이 있습니까? 우리가 계속할 수 있도록 필요한 모든 것을 달라고 하나님께 간구하십시오.

Failure Is Impossible

“Failure is impossible!” These words were spoken by Susan B. Anthony (1820–1906), known for her immovable stance on women’s rights in the US. Though she faced constant criticism and later an arrest, trial, and guilty verdict for voting illegally, Anthony vowed to never give up the fight to gain women the right to vote, believing her cause was just. Though she didn’t live to see the fruit of her labor, her declaration proved true. In 1920, the nineteenth amendment to the Constitution gave women the right to vote.

Failure wasn’t an option for Nehemiah either, mainly because he had a Powerful Helper: God. After asking Him to bless his cause—rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem—Nehemiah and those who had returned to Jerusalem from exile in Babylon worked to make that happen. The wall was needed to keep the people safe from enemies. But opposition to the cause came in the form of deception and threats. Nehemiah refused to let opposition deter him. He informed those who opposed the work, “I am carrying on a great project” (NEHEMIAH 6:3). After that, he prayed, “Now strengthen my hands” (V. 9). Thanks to perseverance, the work was completed (V. 15).

God gave Nehemiah the strength to persevere in the face of opposition. Is there a task for which you’re tempted to give up? Ask God to provide whatever you need to keep going. LINDA WASHINGTON
