아낌없는 사랑의 표현

남편 앨런은 우리 결혼기념일에 생화로 커다란 꽃다발을 나에게 선물합니다. 나는 그가 회사의 구조조정으로 직장을 잃었을 때에 이런 과분한 사랑의 표현이 계속될 것을 기대하지 않았습니다. 그러나 열아홉 번째 기념일에도 남편은 화사한 꽃들로 식탁을 장식해주었습니다. 매년 이렇게 선물하는 것을 중요하게 여겼던 앨런은 자기의 사랑을 표현하려고 여기에 필요한 돈을 매달 조금씩 모았던 것입니다.

남편의 세심한 계획은 바울이 고린도의 성도들에게 편지하며 격려했던 것처럼 사려 깊고 넉넉한 마음에서 나온 것입니다. 바울 사도는 교회가 마음으로 준비하며 열심을 다해 헌금한 것에 대해 감사하면서(고린도후서 9:2,5), 하나님은 참된 마음으로 즐겁게 헌금하는 사람을 기뻐하신다고 하였습니다(6-7절). 그러나 우리에게 필요한 것을 주시려고 언제나 준비하고 계시는 사랑의 공급자이신 하나님보다 더 많이 줄 수 있는 사람은 세상에 없습니다(8-10절).

주님이 우리의 물질적, 정서적, 영적인 필요를 다 채워주시기 때문에 우리는 서로를 보살필 때에 무엇이든 넉넉히 나눌 수 있습니다 (11절). 우리는 나눌 때에 하나님이 우리에게 주신 모든 것들에 감사를 표할 수 있습니다. 더 나아가 다른 이들에게도 주님을 찬양하고 하나님께서 그들에게 공급하신 모든 것을 다른 사람과도 나누고 싶은 마음이 생기게 할 수 있습니다(12-13절). 넘치는 사랑과 감사의 표현으로 팔을 활짝 펴서 남들과 나누는 모습은 하나님께서 그의 모든 백성에게 베푸신다는 믿음을 보여줍니다.

Lavish Expressions of Love

On our wedding anniversary, my husband, Alan, gives me a large bouquet of fresh flowers. When he lost his job during a corporate restructure, I didn’t expect this extravagant display of devotion to continue. But on our nineteenth anniversary, the color-splashed blossoms greeted me from their spot on our dining room table. Because he valued continuing this annual tradition, Alan saved some money each month to ensure he’d have enough for this personal show of affection.

My husband’s careful planning exhibited exuberant generosity, similar to what Paul encouraged when he addressed the Corinthian believers. The apostle complimented the church for their intentional and enthusiastic offerings (2 Corinthians 9:2, 5), reminding them that God delights in generous and cheerful givers (vv. 6–7). After all, no one gives more than our loving Provider, who’s always ready to supply all we need (vv. 8–10).

We can be generous in all kinds of giving, caring for one another because the Lord meets all of our material, emotional, and spiritual needs (v. 11). As we give, we can express our gratitude for all God has given us. We can even motivate others to praise the Lord and give from all God has given them (vv. 12–13). Openhanded giving, a lavish expression of love and gratitude, can demonstrate our confidence in God’s provision for all His people. - XOCHITL DIXON

순전한 마음으로 섬김

작은 무리의 사람들이 잔디밭에 넘어져 있는 거대한 나무 옆에 서 있는데 나무가 워낙 커서 사람들이 아주 작게 보였습니다. 한 나이든 부인이 지팡이를 짚고서 전날 밤 폭풍으로 “동네의 명물 느릅나무”가 넘어지던 광경을 이야기했습니다. 그녀는 감정에 북받쳐 계속 말했습니다. “더 큰 일은 폭풍 때문에 우리가 만든 저 귀한 돌담도 무너진 거예요. 우리가 막 결혼했을 때 남편이 만든 담이었어요. 남편도 저도 그 담을 참 좋아했는데! 이제 남편처럼 그 담도 사라져버렸어요.”

다음 날 아침 조경 회사에서 나온 사람들이 넘어진 나무를 수습하는 것을 내다보던 부인의 얼굴에 환한 미소가 피어올랐습니다. 그녀의 잔디를 깎아주는 소년과 다른 두 어른이 그녀가 아끼던 돌담을 세세히 측량하면서 보수공사를 하는 모습이 나뭇가지 사이로 보였기 때문입니다!

이사야 선지자는 하나님이 어떤 종류의 섬김을 좋아하시는지 설명합니다. 그것은 벽을 수리한 사람들이 나이든 부인에게 해주었던 것처럼 우리 주위에 있는 사람들 마음에 용기를 가져다주는 행동입니다. 이 말씀은 공허한 영적 의식으로가 아니라 순전한 마음으로 남을 섬기는 모습을 하나님이 더 귀하게 보신다는 것을 가르쳐줍니다. 실제로 하나님은 그분의 자녀들이 순전한 마음으로 섬길 때에 두 가지로 축복해주십니다. 먼저는, 억압 받고 궁핍한 사람들을 자원해서 돕는 우리의 섬김 활동을 하나님께서 사용하십니다(이사야 58:7-10). 또 하나는, 하나님께서 그의 나라의 강하고 밝은 군사로 우리의 이름을 알리고 세워주심으로써 이렇게 섬기는 사람들을 높여주십니다 (11-12절). 당신은 오늘 어떻게 섬기시겠습니까?

Unselfish Service

A small collection of people stood together, dwarfed by the size of the huge tree lying on the lawn. An elderly woman leaned on her cane and described watching the previous night’s windstorm as it blew down “our majestic old elm tree. Worst of all,” she continued, voice cracking with emotion, “it destroyed our lovely stone wall too. My husband built that wall when we were first married. He loved that wall. I loved that wall! Now it’s gone; just like him.”

Next morning, as she peeked out at the tree company workers cleaning up the downed tree; a big smile spread across her face. In between the branches she could just make out two adults and the boy who mowed her lawn carefully measuring and rebuilding her beloved stone wall!

The prophet Isaiah describes the kind of service God favors: acts that lift the hearts of those around us, like the wall repairers did for the elderly woman. This passage teaches that God values unselfish service to others over empty spiritual rituals. In fact, God exercises a two-way blessing on the selfless service of His children. First, God uses our willing acts of service to aid the oppressed and needy (Isaiah 58:7–10). Then God honors those engaged in such service by building or rebuilding our reputations as powerful positive forces in His kingdom (vv. 11–12). What service will you offer this day? - RANDY KILGORE

완전하게 불완전함

내가 다니던 대학의 한 교수님은 나의 완벽주의 때문에 일이 지연되는 점을 지적하며 현명한 조언을 해주었습니다. 그는 “완벽함 때문에 좋은 것을 놓치지 말라.”고 하면서 언제나 완벽만 추구하면 위험을 무릅쓸 일이 없어 성장의 기회를 놓치게 된다고 설명했습니다. 내가 하는 일이 언제나 완전할 수 없다는 사실을 받아들일 때 계속 성장하는 자유를 얻는다는 것입니다.

바울 사도는 우리가 자신을 완벽하게 해보려 애쓰는 것을 내려놓아야 하는 더 깊은 이유를 설명했습니다. 완벽주의는 우리에게 그리스도가 필요하다는 사실을 볼 수 없게 만든다는 것입니다.

바울 사도는 어려운 과정을 통해 이것을 깨달았습니다. 하나님의 율법을 완전하게 지키려고 오랫동안 애써온 그는 예수님을 만난 후 모든 것이 바뀌었습니다(갈라디아서 1:11-16). 바울은 자신의 노력만으로 하나님 앞에서 온전하고 의로울 수 있다면 “그리스도께서 돌아가실 필요가 없었다”(2:21)는 사실을 깨달았습니다. 그는 자신을 의지하던 것을 내려놓을 때, 곧 자신에 대하여 ‘죽을 때’에 자기 안에 살아계신 예수님을 경험할 수 있었습니다(20절). 그는 자신이 불완전할 때 비로소 하나님의 완전한 능력을 경험할 수 있었습니다.

우리가 평생 다듬어져가는 과정은 언제나 진행형입니다. 그러나 유일하게 완전하신 예수님이 우리에게 항상 필요하다는 사실을 마음속에 겸손히 받아들일 때 주님은 우리 마음에 거처를 두십니다(에베소서 3:17). 예수님 안에 뿌리를 내리면 “너무나 커서 다 이해할 수 없는” 그 사랑 안에서 더욱 깊이 자랄 수 있는 자유를 얻습니다(19절).

Perfect Imperfection

A college professor of mine, picking up on my perfectionism-induced procrastination, gave me some wise advice. “Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good,” he said, explaining that striving for perfect performance can prevent the risks necessary for growth. Accepting that my work would always be imperfect would give me the freedom to keep growing.

The apostle Paul explained an even more profound reason to let go of our own efforts to perfect ourselves: it can blind us to our need for Christ.

Paul had learned this the hard way. After years striving to perfectly obey God’s law, encountering Jesus changed everything (Galatians 1:11–16). Paul realized that if his own efforts were enough to be whole and right with God, “then there was no need for Christ to die” (2:21 NLT). Only by letting go of—dying to—self-reliance, could he experience Jesus living in him (v. 20). Only in his imperfection could he experience God’s perfect power.

This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t resist sin (v. 17); but it does mean we should stop relying on our own strength to grow spiritually (v. 20).

In this lifetime, we will always be works in progress. But as our hearts humbly accept our constant need for the only perfect One, Jesus makes His home there (Ephesians 3:17). Rooted in Him, we are free to grow ever deeper in the love “too great” to ever “understand fully” (v. 19 NLT). - MONICA BRANDS

예수님은 그 이유를 아신다

나의 친구들 중에는 어느 정도 치유는 되었지만 그 병으로 인해 통증을 앓는 사람들이 있고, 또 중독은 치유되었으나 여전히 자신감이 없고 자기혐오로 힘들어하는 친구들이 있습니다. 나는 이런 일을 보면서 ‘왜 하나님은 모든 것을 한 번에 완전히 회복시켜 주시지 않는가?’ 하는 의문을 갖습니다.

예수님이 태어날 때부터 맹인 된 사람을 고쳐주시는 이야기가 마가복음 8:22–26 에 있습니다. 예수님은 그를 먼저 마을 밖으로 데리고 나가신 후, 그의 눈에 침을 뱉으시고 그에게 안수하셨습니다. 그는 이제 사람들이 “나무 같은 것들이 걸어가는 것” 으로 보인다고 말했습니다. 그리고 예수님이 그 사람의 눈에 다시 안수하시니 이번에는 “모든 것을 밝게” 보게 되었습니다.

예수님이 사역하시며 하신 말씀들과 행동에 그의 제자들과 따르던 무리들은 때로 매우 놀라거나 이해를 못했으며(마태복음 7:28; 누가복음 8:10; 11:14) 많은 사람들이 예수님을 떠나기도 하였습니다(요한복음 6:60-66). 두 번에 걸쳐 만드신 이 기적도 틀림없이 사람들이 의아해 했을 것입니다. 이 사람을 왜 단번에 고쳐주지 않으셨을까요?

우리는 그 이유를 알 수 없습니다. 그러나 예수님은 바로 그 시간 맹인과 그를 고치시는 것을 보고 있는 제자들에게 무엇이 필요한지를 알고 계셨습니다. 그리고 오늘 우리가 예수님과 더 가까운 관계가 되도록 하려면 우리에게 무엇이 필요한지도 알고 계십니다. 우리가 항상 이해하지는 못할 지라도 우리와 우리의 사랑하는 사람들의 삶 가운데 하나님께서 일하고 계심을 믿을 수 있습니다. 또 우리가 인내하며 하나님을 따라가는데 필요한 힘과 용기와 분명함도 그분이 주실 것입니다.

Jesus Knows Why

I have friends who’ve received partial healing but still struggle with painful aspects of their diseases. Other friends have been healed of an addiction but still struggle with feelings of inadequacy and self-loathing. And I wonder, Why doesn’t God heal them completely—once and for all?

In Mark 8:22–26, we read the story of Jesus healing a man born blind. Jesus first took the man away from the village. Then He spit on the man’s eyes and “put his hands on him.” The man said he now saw people who looked “like trees walking around.” Then Jesus touched the man’s eyes again, and this time he saw “everything clearly.”

In His ministry, Jesus’s words and actions often amazed and baffled the crowd and His followers (Matthew 7:28; Luke 8:10; 11:14) and even drove many of them away (John 6:60–66). No doubt this two-part miracle also caused confusion. Why not immediately heal this man?

We don’t know why. But Jesus knew what the man—and the disciples who viewed his healing—needed in that moment. And He knows what we need today to draw us closer in our relationship with Him. Though we won’t always understand, we can trust that God is working in our lives and the lives of our loved ones. And He will give us the strength, courage, and clarity we need to persevere in following Him. - ALYSON KIEDA

보살펴 주심

학교에 가려고 문으로 뛰어가는 아들을 향해 양치질을 했는지 물었습니다. 나는 다시 물으면서 정직해야 한다고 말해주었습니다. 아들은 나의 부드러운 경고에는 아랑곳 않고 나에게 반 농담으로 화장실에 감시카메라를 다는 게 더 나을 것이라고 했습니다. 그러면 자기가 이를 닦았는지 안 닦았는지 내가 직접 확인할 수도 있고, 자기는 거짓말 하려는 유혹에 빠지지도 않을 것이라는 겁니다.

감시카메라는 우리가 규칙을 지키는데 도움이 될지는 모르지만 들키지 않고 갈 수 있는 장소나 보이지 않게 피하는 방법은
여전히 있습니다. 우리는 감시카메라를 피하거나 속임수를 쓸 수는 있겠지만, 하나님의 눈도 피할 수 있다고 생각한다면 그것은 스스로 속는 것입니다.

하나님은 이렇게 물으십니다. “사람이 내게 보이지 아니하려고 누가 자신을 은밀한 곳에 숨길 수 있겠느냐”(예레미야 23:24). 하나님의 이 질문에는 격려와 경고 둘 다 들어있습니다.

이 경고는 우리가 하나님으로부터 숨을 수 없다는 것입니다. 우리는 하나님을 피하여 달아날 수 없고 속일 수도 없습니다. 하나님은 우리가 행하는 모든 것을 보고 계십니다.

그러나 우리에게 격려가 되는 것은 이 땅이나 하늘 어디에도 우리 하나님 아버지께서 우리를 보살펴주시지 않는 곳이 없다는 것입니다. 우리가 혼자라고 느껴지는 그 때에도 하나님은 우리와 함께 계십니다. 이 사실을 깨닫고 오늘 어느 곳을 가든지 그의 말씀에 순종하며 위로를 받게 되기를 바랍니다. 하나님은 우리를 살피고 계십니다.

Watchful Care

Before he raced out the door to school, I asked my son if he had brushed his teeth. Asking again, I reminded him of the importance of telling the truth. Unmoved by my gentle admonishment, he half-jokingly informed me that what I really needed was a security camera in the bathroom. Then I could check for myself if he had brushed his teeth and he wouldn’t be tempted to lie.

While the presence of a security camera may help remind us to follow the rules, there are still places we can go unnoticed or ways we can avoid being seen. Although we may evade or trick a security camera, we fool ourselves if we think we are ever outside the gaze of God.

God asks, “Who can hide in secret places so that I cannot see them?” (Jeremiah 23:24). There is both an encouragement and a warning in His question.

The warning is that we cannot hide from God. We can’t outrun or fool Him. Everything we do is visible to Him.

The encouragement is that there is no place on earth or in the heavens where we are outside the watchful care of our heavenly Father. Even when we feel alone, God is with us. No matter where we go today, may the awareness of that truth encourage us to choose obedience to His Word and receive comfort—He watches over us. - LISA SAMRA

여전한 희망

1988년부터 기고해 온 수백 개의 ‘오늘의 양식’ 글들 가운데 내 마음에 뚜렷이 남아있는 것이 몇 개 있습니다. 그 중 하나는 1990년대 중반에 쓴 것으로, 우리 세 딸이 캠프나 선교여행을 떠나고 나는 6살 난 아들 스티브와 남자들만의 시간을 가졌던 이야기입니다.

공항으로 소풍을 가는 길이었는데 스티브가 나를 돌아보며 “멜리사 누나가 없으니까 그리 즐겁지 않아요.”라고 했습니다. 여덟 살 난 누나 멜리사는 아들에게 단짝 친구였습니다. 그때는 그 말이 나중에 그토록 가슴 아픈 말이 될지 아무도 몰랐습니다. 멜리사가 교통사고로 꽃다운 나이에 죽은 이후 지금까지 삶은 참으로 “그리 즐겁지” 않았습니다. 시간이 지나며 아픔이 덜어질지는 모르나 어느 것도 고통을 완전히 걷어가지는 못합니다. 그 상처는 시간으로 치유되지 못합니다. 그러나 여기 도움이 되는 것들이 있습니다. 모든 위로의 하나님께서 약속하신 위로의 말씀들을 듣고 묵상하고 음미하는 것입니다.

듣기: “여호와의 인자와 긍휼이 무궁하시므로 우리가 진멸되지 아니함이니이다”(예레미야애가 3:22).

묵상하기: “여호와께서 환난 날에 나를 그의 초막 속에 비밀히 지키시고”(시편 27:5).

음미하기: “이 말씀은 나의 고난 중의 위로라 주의 말씀이 나를 살리셨기 때문이니이다”(시편 119:50).

사랑하는 누군가가 떠나갔을 때 삶은 결코 전과 같을 수 없습니다. 그러나 하나님의 약속으로 소망과 위로를 얻을 수 있습니다.

Hope Anyway

Among the hundreds of articles I’ve written for Our Daily Bread since 1988, a few stick in my mind. One such article is from the mid-1990s when I told of a time our three girls were away at camp or on mission trips, so six-year-old Steve and I had some guy time.

As we were enjoying an excursion to the airport, Steve turned to me and said, “It’s not as much fun without Melissa,” his eight-year-old sister and sidekick. Neither of us knew then how poignant those words would turn out to be. Life indeed has not been “as much fun” for the years since Mell died in a car accident as a teenager. The passage of time may dull the ache, but nothing takes the pain away completely. Time cannot heal that wound. But here’s something that can help: listening to, meditating on, and savoring the solace promised by the God of all comfort.

Listen: “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail” (Lamentations 3:22).

Meditate: “In the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling” (Psalm 27:5).

Savor: “My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life” (119:50).

Life can never be the same again when someone we love is gone. But God’s promises bring hope and comfort. - DAVE BRANON

폭풍으로부터의 피난처

오클라호마에서 살 때 토네이도의 진로를 “추적”하던 한 친구가 있었습니다. 존은 다른 추적자들과 함께 무선송신을 주고받고 지역 레이더를 살피며 주의 깊게 폭풍을 추적했습니다. 그리고 갑작스러운 변화가 있을 때 위험한 지역의 사람들에게 알려주기 위해 적당한 거리를 유지하면서 폭풍이 휩쓸고 가는 경로를 관측하였습니다.

어느 날 깔때기 모양의 구름이 갑작스럽게 방향을 바꾸는 순간 존은 자신이 큰 위험에 처한 것을 알았습니다. 그러나 천만다행으로 피난처를 발견하여 위기를 모면할 수 있었습니다.

그날 오후 존의 경험은 나에게 또 다른 파괴적인 경로를 생각하게 합니다. 그것은 우리 삶속의 죄입니다. 성경은 우리에게
“오직 각 사람이 시험을 받는 것은 자기 욕심에 끌려 미혹됨이니 욕심이 잉태한즉 죄를 낳고 죄가 장성한즉 사망을 낳느니라”(야고보서 1:14-15)라고 말합니다.

이것은 점진적으로 커지는 현상을 보입니다. 처음에는 해롭지 않게 보이던 것이 금방 통제 불가능의 상태가 되어 파괴할 수 있습니다. 그러나 유혹이 다가올 때 하나님은 몰려드는 폭풍을 피할 피난처를 마련해주십니다.

성경은 하나님이 결코 우리를 시험하지 않으시며, 우리가 택한 것은 우리에게 탓이 있다고 말합니다. 그러나 “시험 당할 즈음에 또한 피할 길을 내사 [우리로] 능히 감당하게 하십니다”(고린도전서 10:13). 우리가 시험당할 때 주님을 향해 도와달라고 부르짖으면 예수님은 시험을 이길 힘을 주십니다.

예수님은 우리의 영원한 피난처이십니다.

Shelter from the Storm

When I lived in Oklahoma I had a friend who “chased” tornados. John tracked the storms carefully through radio contact with other chasers and local radar, trying to keep a safe distance while observing their destructive paths so he could report sudden changes to people in harm’s way.

One day a funnel cloud changed course so abruptly John found himself in grave danger. Fortunately, he found shelter and was spared.

John’s experience that afternoon makes me think of another destructive path: sin in our lives. The Bible tells us, “Each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death” (James 1:14–15).

There’s a progression here. What may at first seem harmless can soon spin out of control and wreak havoc. But when temptation threatens, God offers us shelter from the gathering storm.

God’s Word tells us He would never tempt us, and we can blame our choices only on ourselves. But when we “are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that [we] can endure it” (1 Corinthians 10:13). As we turn to Him and call on Him for help in the moment of temptation, Jesus gives us the strength we need to overcome.

즐거운 우리 집

아들이 “왜 우리 집을 떠나 이사를 가야 해요?”라고 물었습니다. 집의 의미를 설명하기란 다섯 살짜리 아이에게는 특히 어렵습니다. 우리가 집을 떠나기는 하지만, 사랑하는 이들이 함께하는 곳이라는 의미에서의 집을 떠나는 것은 아니기 때문입니다. 이 집은 우리가 긴 여행이나 하루 일과를 마치고 돌아가기를 원하는 곳입니다.

예수님은 돌아가시기 불과 몇 시간 전에 다락방에서 제자들에게 “너희는 마음에 근심하지 말라”(요한복음 14:1) 고 말씀하셨습니다. 제자들은 예수님이 죽으실 것이라고 말씀하셨기 때문에 그들의 앞날이 어떻게 될지 불안해했습니다. 그러나 예수님은 그들과 함께 계실 것이라고 확신시켜주셨고, 그들은 예수님을 다시 보게 될 것이라고 상기시켜주셨습니다. 예수님은 그들에게 “내 아버지 집에 거할 곳이 많도다......내가 너희를 위하여 거처를 예비하러 가노니”(2절)라고 말씀하셨습니다. 예수님은 천국을 설명하기 위해 다른 단어를 쓸 수도 있었지만, 불편하거나 익숙지 않은 장소가 아니라 우리가 사랑하는 예수님이 계실 장소를 말해주는 단어들을 선택하셨습니다.

씨 에스 루이스는 이렇게 썼습니다. “하나님 아버지는 우리가 여행할 때 편안한 여관에서 쉬게 하시지만, 거기를 자기 집으로 착각하지 않기를 바라신다.” 우리는 살면서 “편안한 여관”에 대해 하나님께 감사할 수 있지만, 우리의 진짜 집은 “항상 주와 함께 있을”(데살로니가전서 4:17) 천국에 있다는 것을 기억합시다.

Home Sweet Home

“Why do we have to leave our home and move?” my son asked. It’s difficult to explain what a home is, especially to a five-year-old. We were leaving a house, but not our home, in the sense that home is where our loved ones are. It’s the place where we long to return after a long trip or after a full day’s work.

When Jesus was in the upper room just hours before He died, He told His disciples, “Do not let your hearts be troubled” (John 14:1). The disciples were uncertain of their future because Jesus had predicted His death. But Jesus reassured them of His presence and reminded them they would see Him again. He told them, “My Father’s house has many rooms . . . . I am going there to prepare a place for you” (v. 2). He could have used other words to describe heaven. However, He chose words that describe not an uncomfortable or unfamiliar place but a place where Jesus, our loved One, would be.

C. S. Lewis wrote, “Our Father refreshes us on the journey with some pleasant inns, but will not encourage us to mistake them for home.” We can thank God for the “pleasant inns” in life, but let’s remember that our real home is in heaven where we “will be with the Lord forever” (1 Thessalonians 4:17). - KEILA OCHOA

십자가를 통해서

나와 같이 일하는 톰의 책상 위에는 20x30 센티미터 크기의 유리 십자가가 있습니다. 톰처럼 암을 이겨낸 그의 친구 필은 톰에게 “십자가를 통해서” 모든 것을 보라고 이것을 선물로 주었습니다. 유리 십자가는 톰을 향한 하나님의 사랑과 선한 뜻을 언제나 생각나게 해 줍니다.

그 생각은 예수님을 믿 는 모든 사람들에게, 특히 어려움을 겪고 있는 사람들에게 도전을 줍니다. 우리는 하나님의 사랑보다 우리의 문제에 집중하기가 훨씬 더 쉽기 때문입니다.

바울 사도의 삶은 십자가를 통해 모든 것을 바라보았던 사람의 확실한 예입니다. 고난을 받으면서 그는 “박해를 받아도 버린바 되지 아니하며 거꾸러뜨림을 당하여도 망하지 아니한다”(고린도후서 4:9)고 했습니다. 그는 “지극히 크고 영원한 영광의 중한 것을 우리에게 이루게 함이니 우리가 주목하는 것은 보이는 것이 아니요 보이지 않는 것이다”(17-18절)라고 하며 환난 중에도 하나님이 역사하고 계심을 믿었습니다.

우리가 “보이지 않는 것에 주목하는 것”은 문제를 축소하려는 것이 아닙니다. 폴 바네트는 이 구절을 주석하여, “[우리를] 향한 하나님의 분명한 뜻에 근거하여 확신을 가질 수 있다...... 그러나 다른 한편 우리는 희망과 함께 고통을 가지고 신음하는 것도 분명히 인정해야 한다.”라고 설명합니다.

예수님은 우리를 위해 생명을 내주셨습니다. 그의 사랑은 깊으며 희생하는 사랑이었습니다. “십자가를 통해서” 인생을 바라볼 때 우리는 예수님의 사랑과 신실하심을 봅니다. 그리고 주님을 믿는 믿음도 자라게 됩니다.

Through the Cross

My coworker Tom keeps an 8″ by 12″ glass cross on his desk. His friend Phil, who like Tom is a cancer survivor, gave it to him to help him look at everything “through the cross.” The glass cross is a constant reminder of God’s love and good purposes for him.

That’s a challenging idea for all believers in Jesus, especially during difficult times. It’s much easier to focus on our problems than on God’s love.

The apostle Paul’s life was certainly an example of having a cross-shaped perspective. He described himself in times of suffering as being “persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed” (2 Corinthians 4:9). He believed that in the hard times, God is at work, “achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen” (vv. 17–18).

To “fix our eyes . . . on what is unseen” doesn’t mean we minimize the problems. Paul Barnett, in his commentary on this passage, explains, “There is to be confidence, based on the certainty of God’s purposes for [us] . . . . On the other hand, there is the sober recognition that we groan with hope mingled with pain.”

Jesus gave His life for us. His love is deep and sacrificial. As we look at life “through the cross,” we see His love and faithfulness. And our trust in Him grows. - ANNE CETAS

당신의 열정은 어디에 있습니까?

내가 거래하는 은행의 한 창구 직원은 ‘쉘비 코브라 로드스터’ 차의 사진을 그의 창구에 붙여 놓고 있습니다. (코브라는 포드
자동차에서 만드는 고성능 차입니다.)

어느 날 그 은행에서 일을 보다가 사진 속의 차가 그의 것이냐고 물었습니다. 그는 “아뇨. 이 차는 저의 열정이지요. 매일 아침 일어나 일하러 가는 이유이기도 합니다. 언젠가 이 차를 꼭 살 겁니다.”라고 대답했습니다.

나는 이 젊은이의 열정을 이해합니다. 내 친구가 코브라 차를 갖고 있어서 나도 한번 그 차를 운전해본 적이 있으니까요! 그
차는 정말 대단했습니다! 그러나 이 세상의 다른 모든 것들과 마찬가지로 코브라 차는 그것을 위해 살아야 할 만큼 가치 있는 것은 아닙니다. 시편 기자는 하나님 이외에 다른 것들을 의지하는 자는 “비틀거리며 엎드러진다”(시편 20:8)고 했습니다.

그 이유는 우리가 하나님을 위해 지어졌고, 다른 어느 것도 대신 할 수 없기 때문입니다. 우리는 그 사실을 매일의 경험을 통해 확인합니다. 우리는 자신을 행복하게 해줄 것이라 믿고 이것저것을 사들이지만, 마치 성탄절에 열 개가 넘는 선물을 받은 아이가 하는 말처럼 우리도 “이게 전부예요?”라고 묻습니다. 언제나 무언가가 부족합니다.

아무리 좋은 것이라 해도 이 세상이 주는 것은 우리를 만족시키지 못합니다. 거기에 어느 정도 즐거움은 있지만 그 행복은 곧 사라져버립니다 (요한1서 2:17). 진실로 “하나님은 그분을 떠난 사람에게 어떤 행복과 평화도 줄 수 없습니다. 그런 일은 없습니다.” 씨 에스 루이스가 내린 결론이었습니다.

What's Your Passion?

One of the tellers at my bank has a photograph of a Shelby Cobra roadster on his window. (The Cobra is a high-performance automobile built by the Ford Motor Company.)

One day, while transacting business at the bank, I asked him if that was his car. “No,” he replied, “that’s my passion, my reason to get up every morning and go to work. I’m going to own one someday.”

I understand this young man’s passion. A friend of mine owned a Cobra, and I drove it on one occasion! It’s a mean machine! But a Cobra, like everything else in this world, isn’t worth living for. Those who trust in things apart from God “are brought to their knees and fall,” according to the psalmist (Psalm 20:8).

That’s because we were made for God and nothing else will do—a truth we validate in our experience every day: We buy this or that because we think these things will make us happy, but like a child receiving a dozen Christmas presents or more, we ask ourselves, “Is this all?” Something is always missing.

Nothing this world has to offer us—even very good things—fully satisfies us. There is a measure of enjoyment in them, but our happiness soon fades away (1 John 2:17). Indeed, “God cannot give us happiness and peace apart from Himself,” C. S. Lewis concluded. “There is no such thing.” - DAVID H. ROPER
