모든 세대

우리 부모님은 대공황 시기였던 1933년에 결혼하셨습니다. 우리 부부는 제2차 세계대전 후 출산율이 급격히 증가하던 시기에 태어난 베이비붐 세대입니다. 네 명의 딸들은 70년대와 80년대에 태어난 X와 Y세대입니다. 이렇게 다른 시대에 성장했기 때문에 우리가 많은 부분에서 서로 의견이 다른 것은 놀라운 일이 아닙니다.

세대에 따라 삶의 경험과 가치관들이 현저하게 다릅니다. 이것은 예수님을 따르는 사람들 사이에서도 마찬가지입니다. 그러나 우리가 어떤 옷을 입고 어떤 음악을 좋아하든지, 우리의 영적인 관계는 그런
차이들보다 더 강력합니다.

하나님을 찬양하는 장대한 노래인 시편 145편은 우리가 믿음으로 서로 연결되어 있음을 선언합니다. “대대로 주께서 행하시는 일을 크게 찬양하며 주의 능한 일을 선포하리로다...... 그들이 주의 크신 은혜를 기념하여 말하며 주의 의를 노래하리이다” (4,7절). 나이와 경험이 아주 다양한 가운데서도 우리는 주님을 경배하며 함께 모입니다. “그들이 주의 나라의 영광을 말하며 주의 업적을 일러서”(11절).

차이점이나 선호도가 우리를 나뉘게 할 수는 있어도, 우리가 공유하고 있는 주 예수 그리스도에 대한 믿음이 우리를 서로 신뢰하고 격려하고 칭찬하는 자리에 함께 모이게 합니다. 나이와 외모에 상관없이 우리는 서로를 필요로 합니다! 우리가 어느 세대에 속해 있든, 우리는 서로에게서 배울 수 있고 함께 하나님을 경배할 수 있습니다. “주의 업적과 주의 나라의 위엄 있는 영광을 인생들에게 알게 하리이다”(12절).

All Generations

My parents married in 1933 during the Great Depression. My wife and I are Baby Boomers, part of the dramatic increase in births following World War II. Our four daughters, born in the seventies and eighties, belong to Generations X and Y. Growing up in such different times, it’s not surprising that we have different opinions about many things!

Generations differ widely in their life experiences and values. And this is true among followers of Jesus. But no matter what we wear or the kind of music we enjoy, our spiritual connection is stronger than those differences.

Psalm 145, a mighty song of praise to God, proclaims our bond of faith. “One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts. . . . They celebrate your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of your righteousness” (VV 4, 7). Within a great diversity of age and experience, we come together by honoring the Lord. “They tell of the glory of your kingdom and speak of your might” (V 11).

While differences and preferences could divide us, shared faith in Jesus Christ the Lord brings us together in mutual trust, encouragement, and praise. Whatever our age and outlook, we need each other! No matter which generation we belong to, we can learn from each other and together honor the Lord—“So that all people may know of [His] mighty acts and the glorious splendor of [His] kingdom” (V 12). - DAVID MCCASLAND

특권적 접근

남부 이스라엘에 세워진 성막은 비록 모형이지만 경외심을 불러일으킵니다. 그것은 출애굽기 25-27장에 나와 있는 규격과 아주 가깝게 실물 크기로 지어져 (물론, 실제 금과 아카시아 나무 없이) 네게브 사막에 우뚝 서 있습니다.

우리 여행단이 “법궤”를 보려고 “성소”를 지나 “지성소”로 들어갈 때, 우리 중 몇 사람이 사실 망설였습니다. 이곳은 대제사장만 들어가도록 허락되었던 가장 거룩한 곳이 아니었던가? 우리가 이처럼 마구 들어가도 되는 건가?

전능하신 하나님의 임재 앞으로 가고 있다는 것을 알았기에 희생제물을 가지고 회막 안에 들어갈 때마다 이스라엘 백성들이 얼마나 두려워했을지 나는 상상할 수 있습니다. 그리고 하나님께서 모세를 통해 그들에게 메시지를 전달할 때마다 그들이 느꼈을 경이로움도 상상할 수 있습니다.

오늘날 우리는 예수님의 희생이 하나님과 우리 사이의 장벽을 허물었다는 것을 알기 때문에 확신을 갖고 하나님께 바로 나아갈 수 있습니다(히브리서 12:22-23). 우리 한 사람 한 사람은 우리가 원할 때는 언제나 하나님께 이야기할 수 있고, 하나님의 말씀을 읽으면서 하나님의 음성을 직접 들을 수 있습니다. 우리는 이스라엘 백성들이 오직 꿈에서나 그리던 직접적인 만남을 누립니다. 주님의 사랑 받는 자녀로서 매일 하나님께 나아갈 수 있는 경이로운 특권을 당연하게 여기지 말고 소중히 여기기를 바랍니다.

기도를 통해서 우리는 하나님 아버지께 바로 나아갈 수 있다.

Privileged Access

Even though it was just a replica, the tabernacle set up in southern Israel was awe-inspiring. Built life-size and as close as possible to the specifications laid out in Exodus 25–27 (without actual gold and acacia wood, of course), it stood tall in the Negev desert.

When our tour group was taken through the “Holy Place” and into the “Most Holy Place” to see the “ark,” some of us actually hesitated. Wasn’t this the holiest place, where only the high priest was allowed to enter? How could we enter it so casually?

I can imagine how fearful the Israelites must have felt as they approached the tent of meeting with their sacrifices each time, knowing that they were coming into the presence of the Almighty God. And the wonder they must have felt, whenever God had a message for them, delivered through Moses.

Today, you and I can come straight to God with confidence, knowing that Jesus’s sacrifice has torn down the barrier between us and God (HEB 12:22–23). Each of us can talk to God any time we want, and hear from Him directly when we read His Word. We enjoy a direct access that the Israelites could only dream of. May we never take it for granted and cherish this awesome privilege of coming to the Father as His beloved children every day. - LESLIE KOH

용서 받았다!

놈 쿡이라는 내 친구는 퇴근 후 집에 도착해서 가끔 그의 가족을 놀라게 합니다. 현관문을 들어서면서 “너는 용서받았어!”하고 소리치곤 하니까요. 그의 가족들이 그에게 용서를 빌어야할 잘못을 저질러서 그런 것이 아닙니다. 가족들이 하루를 보내면서 아마도 죄를 지었겠지만, 하나님의 은혜로 다 용서받았다는 것을 상기시켜주려는 것이었습니다.

요한 사도는 은혜에 대해 이런 기록을 남기고 있습니다. “그가 빛 가운데 계신 것 같이 우리도 빛 가운데 행하면 우리가 서로 사귐이 있고 그 아들 예수의 피가 우리를 모든 죄에서 깨끗하게 하실 것이요 만일 우리가 죄가 없다고 말하면 스스로 속이고 또 진리가 우리 속에 있지 아니할 것이요 만일 우리가 우리 죄를 자백하면 그는 미쁘시고 의로우사 우리 죄를 사하시며 우리를 모든 불의에서 깨끗하게 하실 것이요”(요한1서 1:7-9).

“빛 가운데 행한다”는 것은 예수님을 따른다는 것을 은유적으로 표현한 것입니다. 요한은 우리가 성령의 도움으로 예수님을 닮아가는 것은, 믿음의 교제를 함으로 사도들과 합류하게 되었다는 표시라고 주장합니다. 우리는 진정한 그리스도인들입니다. 그러나 요한은 속지 말라고 계속해서 우리에게 말합니다. 우리가 때때로 잘못된 선택을 하기 때문입니다. 그럼에도 우리가 받은 완전한 은혜로 우리는 용서 받을 수 있습니다.

우리는 완전하지 못하지만, 예수님이 우리를 용서하셨습니다! 그것은 오늘 우리에게 주시는 복된 말씀입니다.

Forgiven!

My friend Norm Cook sometimes had a surprise for his family when he arrived home from work. He would walk through the front door, and shout, “You’re forgiven!” It wasn’t that family members had wronged him and needed his forgiveness. He was reminding them that though they doubtless had sinned throughout the day, they were by God’s grace fully forgiven.

The apostle John supplies this note about grace: “If we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. If we claim to be without sin [no inclination to sin], we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 JOHN 1:7–9).

To “walk in the light” is a metaphor for following Jesus. Imitating Jesus with the Spirit’s help, John insists, is the sign that we have joined with the apostles in the fellowship of faith. We are authentic Christians. But, he continues, let’s not be deceived: We will make wrong choices at times. Nevertheless, grace is given in full measure: We can take what forgiveness we need.

Not perfect; just forgiven by Jesus! That’s the good word for today. - DAVID ROPER

좋은 동반자

양로원에 계시던 그 할머니는 아무에게도 말을 걸지 않았고, 무엇을 부탁하지도 않았습니다. 삐걱거리는 오래된 흔들의자를 흔들며, 단지 존재하고 있는 것처럼 보였습니다. 찾아오는 사람도 별로 없어서 한 젊은 간호사가 휴식 시간을 이용하여 그 할머니를 종종 찾아가곤 했습니다. 말을 걸려고 질문을 던지는 대신, 그 간호사는그냥 다른 흔들의자를 할머니 옆으로 가져가 옆에서 같이 흔들며 앉아 있었습니다. 몇 달이 지난 후 그 할머니는 “나와 함께 해주어서 고마워요.”라고 말했습니다. 그녀는 동반자가 있다는 것에 감사했습니다.

예수님은 승천하시기 전에 제자들에게 변함없는 동반자를 보내주시겠다고 약속하셨습니다. 주님은 그들을 홀로 내버려두시지 않고 성령님을 보내 그들 속에 있게 하시겠다고 말씀하셨습니다(요한복음 14:17). 그 약속은 오늘날 예수님을 믿는 모든 사람들에게도 마찬가지로 적용됩니다. 예수님은 삼위일체의 하나님께서 우리 안에 “거처”를 마련하신다고 말씀하셨습니다(23절).

주님은 평생 동안 계속해서 가장 가깝고 신실한 우리의 동반자 이십니다. 주님은 가장 어려운 고통 가운데에서 우리를 이끌어주시며, 우리 죄를 용서해주시고, 침묵의 기도를 들으시며, 우리가 질 수 없는 무거운 짐을 져주십니다.

오늘 우리는 좋은 동반자 되시는 주님과 함께 즐거워할 수 있습니다.

Sweet Company

The elderly woman in the nursing home didn’t speak to anyone or request anything. It seemed she merely existed, rocking in her creaky old chair. She didn’t have many visitors, so one young nurse would often go into her room on her breaks. Without asking the woman questions to try to get her to talk, she simply pulled up another chair and rocked with her. After several months, the elderly woman said to her, “Thank you for rocking with me.” She was grateful for the companionship.

Before He went back to heaven, Jesus promised to send a constant companion to His disciples. He told them He would not leave them alone but would send the Holy Spirit to be in them (JOHN 14:17). That promise is still true for believers in Jesus today. Jesus said that the triune God makes His “home” in us (V 23).

The Lord is our close and faithful companion throughout our entire life. He will guide us in our deepest struggles, forgive our sin, hear each silent prayer, and shoulder the burdens we cannot bear.

깊은 곳에서 빠져나옴

나는 무슨 문제가 없는지 집중해서 물을 훑어보았습니다. 인명구조원으로 근무하는 6시간 동안 나는 수영하는 사람들의 안전을 확인하려고 수영장 가장자리에서 지켜보았습니다. 내 자리를 벗어나거나 집중력이 흐트러지면 풀장에 있는 사람들에게 중대한 결과를 가져올 수 있습니다. 만약 수영하는 사람이 다치거나 기량 미숙으로 익사할 위험에 빠지면, 나의 책임은 그들을 건져내어 물 밖에 있는 안전지대로 데려오는 것입니다.

블레셋과의 전투에서 하나님의 도움을 경험한 다윗은(사무엘하 21:15-22) 그가 구원 받은 것이 “깊은 물” 속에서 구조된 것과 같다고 말합니다(22:17). 다윗 자신과 그의 부하들의 목숨이 적의 공격으로 아주 위험한 처지에 놓이게 되자, 하나님은 그 재난 속에 빠져 들어가는 다윗을 떠오르게 하셨습니다. 인명구조원은 보수를 받고 수영하는 사람들의 안전을 지키지만, 하나님은 다윗을 ‘기뻐하시므로’ 그를 구원하셨습니다(20절). 하나님께서 나를 지켜보시고 보호하시는 것은 그것이 의무이기 때문이 아니라 하나님이 ‘원하시기’ 때문입니다. 내가 이 사실을 알았을 때 내 가슴은 기쁨으로 요동쳤습니다.

삶이 고통으로 뒤덮인 것처럼 느껴질 때, 인명구조원이신 하나님께서 우리의 고난을 보고 계시며, 우리를 기뻐하셔서 지키고 보호하신다는 것을 알면 우리는 안심할 수 있습니다.

Out of the Deep

I scanned the water intently, on alert for signs of trouble. During my six-hour shifts as a lifeguard, I watched from the side of the pool to ensure the safety of those swimming. Leaving my post, or even becoming lax in my attentiveness, could have grave consequences for those in the pool. If a swimmer was in danger of drowning due to injury or lack of skill, it was my responsibility to pluck them from the water and return them to safety on the pool deck.

After experiencing God’s aid in battle against the Philistines (2 SAM 21:15–22), David likens his rescue to being drawn out of “deep waters” (22:17). David’s very life—and that of his men—was in serious danger from his enemies. God buoyed David as he was drowning in disaster. While lifeguards are paid to assure the safety of swimmers, God, on the other hand, saved David because of His delight in him (V 20). My heart leaps for joy when I realize that God doesn’t watch over and protect me because He’s obliged to but because He wants to.

When we feel overcome by the troubles of life, we can rest in the knowledge that God, our Lifeguard, sees our struggle and, because of His delight in us, watches over and protects us. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

존 에프 번스는 뉴욕 타임스에서 세계적인 사건들을 취재하며 40년을 보냈습니다. 2015년에 은퇴한 후 쓴 글에서, 번스는 암으로 죽어가는 친한 친구였던 동료 기자가 했던 말을 회상했습니다. “절대 잊지 말게, 중요한 것은 자네가 얼마나 멀리 여행했느냐가 아니라 무엇을 얻고 돌아왔느냐 라는 것을.”

시편 37편은 다윗이 목자에서 군인, 그리고 왕이 되었던 자신의 인생여정에서 “얻었던” 것을 나열한 것으로 보입니다. 이 시는 악인과 의인을 대조하면서 하나님을 신뢰하는 자들을 보여주는 2행 대구 형식으로 되어 있습니다.

살아오면서 우리가 겪은 경험을 통해 하나님께서 무엇을 가르쳐주셨습니까? 우리는 하나님의 사랑과 신실하심을 어떤 방법으로 경험했습니까? 주님의 사랑이 어떤 식으로 우리의 삶을 빚으셨습니까?

중요한 것은 우리가 얼마나 먼 곳을 두루 다니며 살았느냐가 아니라 무엇을 얻었는가 하는 것입니다.

What We Bring Back

John F. Burns spent forty years covering world events for T he New York Times. In an article written after his retirement in 2015, Burns recalled the words of a close friend and fellow journalist who was dying of cancer. “Never forget,” his colleague said, “It’s not how far you’ve traveled; it’s what you’ve brought back.”

Psalm 37 could be considered David’s list of what he “brought back” from his journey of life, from shepherd to soldier and king. The psalm is a series of couplets contrasting the wicked with the righteous, and affirming those who trust the Lord.

“Do not fret because of those who are evil or be envious of those who do wrong; for like the grass they will soon wither” (VV 1–2).

“The LORD makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the LORD upholds him with his hand” (VV 23–24).

“I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread” (V 25).

From our experiences in life, what has God taught us? How have we experienced His faithfulness and love? In what ways has the Lord’s love shaped our lives?

공동체 세우기

헨리 나우웬은 “공동체”란 당신이 더불어 살고 싶지 않은 사람이 항상 같이 살고 있는 곳이라고 말했습니다. 종종 우리는 가장 같이 있고 싶은 사람들끼리 모이는데, 이것은 공동체가 아닌 동호회나 파벌을 형성하게 됩니다. 누구나 동호회를 만들 수 있습니다. 그러나 한 공동체를 형성하려면 구성원들이 품위를 갖추고 비전을 공유하고 뼈를 깎는 노력을 해야 합니다.

교회는 역사상 처음으로 유대인과 이방인, 남자와 여자, 노예와 자유인이 동등한 지위로 함께 모인 기관입니다. 바울 사도는 “영원부터 하나님 속에 감추어졌던 비밀”에 대해 열정적으로 말했습니다. 다양한 사람들이 모여 공동체를 형성하는 것은 세상과, 심지어 초자연적 세상의 관심을 사로잡을 수 있는 기회라고 바울은 말했습니다(에베소서 3:9-10).

아쉽게도 어떤 면에서 교회는 이 과제에서 실패했습니다. 그렇지만 내가 방문하는 곳 중에서 교회는 어머니의 팔에 안겨있는 갓난아기들, 예배 시간에 꿈틀대며 키득거리는 아이들, 항상 절도 있게 행동할 줄
아는 책임감 있는 어른들, 그리고 설교자의 단조로운 설교가 너무 길어지면 졸음으로 빠져드는 사람들 같이, 여전히 다양한 세대가 모이는 유일한 장소입니다.

만약 하나님이 우리에게 주시는 공동체를 경험하고 싶다면, “우리와 같지 않은” 성도들과 함께 하기를 추구해야 합니다.

Building Community

“Community” is the place where the person you least want to live with always lives, says Henri Nouwen. Often we surround ourselves with the people we most want to live with, which forms a club or a clique, not a community. Anyone can form a club; it takes grace, shared vision, and hard work to form a community.

The Christian church was the first institution in history to bring together on equal footing Jews and Gentiles, men and women, slaves and free. The apostle Paul waxed eloquent on this “mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God.” By forming a community out of diverse members, Paul said, we have the opportunity to capture the attention of the world and even the supernatural world beyond (EPH 3:9–10).

In some ways the church has sadly failed in this assignment. Still, church is the one place I visit that brings together generations: infants still held in their mothers’ arms, children who squirm and giggle at all the wrong times, responsible adults who know how to act appropriately at all times, and those who may drift asleep if the preacher drones on too long.

If we want the community experience God is offering to us, we have reason to seek a congregation of people “not like us.” - PHILIP YANCEY

인정받지 못했나요?

할리우드 뮤지컬은 1950년대와 1960년대에 인기가 많았습니다. 특히 세 명의 여배우, 오드리 헵번과 나탈리 우드, 데보라 커는 뛰어난 연기로 관객을 사로잡았습니다. 하지만 이들을 돋보이게 한 것은 그녀들의 연기를 드높인 숨을 죽이게 하는 노래였습니다. 그러나 사실 이 클래식 영화들이 성공한데는 각 여주인공의 목소리를 더빙했지만 한동안 그 중요한 공헌에 대해 어떤 공로도 인정받지 못했던 마니 닉슨의 역할이 상당히 큽니다.

그리스도의 몸인 교회에는 사람들 앞에 나서서 일하는 사람들을 성실히 돕는 이들이 종종 있습니다. 바울 사도는 사역할 때 바로 그런 사람들에게 의존했습니다. 필사자로서의 더디오의 사역은 바울에게 강력한 ‘기록된’ 목소리를 제공해주었습니다(로마서 16:22). 에바브라의 지속적인 중보기도는 바울과 초대교회의 필수적인 기반이었습니다(골로새서 4 : 1 2 - 1 3 ) . 루디아는 지쳐 회복이 필요한 사도에게 기꺼이 자신의 집을 제공하였습니다 (사도행전 16:15). 바울의 사역은 그리스도 안에서 이런 동역자들의 후원 없이는 불가능했을 것입니다(7-18절).

우리가 항상 눈에 잘 뜨이는 역할을 하지는 않을지라도, 하나님의 계획에서 중요한 일을 순종하며 따르면 하나님이 기뻐하신다는 것을 압니다. 우리가 “우리 자신을 주의 일에 온전히 드릴 때”(고린도전서 15:58), 하나님께 영광을 돌리고 사람들을 하나님께로 이끄는 우리 사역의 가치와 의미를 찾게 될 것입니다(마태복음 5:16).

Didn’t Get Credit?

Hollywood musicals were wildly popular during the 1950s and 1960s, and three actresses in particular—Audrey Hepburn, Natalie Wood, and Deborah Kerr—thrilled viewers with their compelling performances. But a huge part of the appeal of these actresses was the breathtaking singing that enhanced their acting. In fact, the classic films’ successes were actually due in large part to Marni Nixon, who dubbed the voices for each of those leading ladies and who for a long time went completely uncredited for her vital contribution.

In the body of Christ there are often people that faithfully support others who take a more public role. The apostle Paul depended on exactly that kind of person in his ministry. Tertius’s work as a scribe gave Paul his powerful written voice (ROM 16:22). Epaphras’s consistent behind-the-scene prayers were an essential foundation for Paul and the early church (COL 4:12–13). Lydia generously opened her home when the weary apostle needed restoration (ACTS 16:15). Paul’s work could not have been possible without the support he received from these fellow servants in Christ (VV 7–18).

We may not always have highly visible roles, yet we know that God is pleased when we obediently play our essential part in His plan. When we “give [ourselves] fully to the work of the Lord” (1 COR 15:58), we will find value and meaning in our service as it brings glory to God and draws others to Him (MATT 5:16).- CINDY HESS KASPER

“정말 무서워......”

“정말 무서워.” 어느 십대 소녀가 의료검사를 앞두고 페이스북에 올린 절박한 글이었습니다. 그녀는 집에서 3시간 떨어진 도시의 한 병원에 입원하여 일련의 검사를 받은 후, 그녀가 앓고 있는 어떤 심각한 질병의 원인을 알아내려는 의사들의 진단 결과를 걱정스럽게 기다리고 있었습니다.

우리 중 청소년기에, 혹은 나중에라도 뜻하지 않게 맞닥뜨리는 정말 두려운 사건에 이와 비슷한 두려움을 느껴보지 않은 사람이 누가 있겠습니까? 그런 경우 우리는 어디서 도움을 구할 수 있을까요? 이런 상황 가운데 우리는 힘을 주는 성경말씀을 통해 어떤 위로를 받을 수 있을까요?

우리의 시련 가운데서도 하나님께서 우리와 함께하신다는 사실은 우리에게 희망을 줍니다. 이사야 41장 13절은 “이는 나 여호와 너의 하나님이 네 오른손을 붙들고 네게 이르기를 두려워하지 말라 내가 너를 도우리라 할 것임이니라”라고 말하고 있습니다.

게다가 우리가 문제를 놓고 하나님께 기도하면 말로 형용할 수 없는 마음의 평강을 주십니다(빌립보서 4:6-7).

하나님의 변함없는 임재와 “모든 지각에 뛰어난”(7절) 하나님의 평강이 주는 소망과 도움으로 우리는 정말 두려운 순간들을 견딜 수 있습니다.

“I’m Really Scared . . .”

“I’m really scared.” This was the poignant note a teenager posted to friends on Facebook as she told them of some upcoming medical tests. She was facing hospitalization and a series of procedures in a city three hours from home and anxiously waited as doctors tried to discover the source of some serious medical problems she was experiencing.

Who of us, in youth or later years, has not felt similar fears when facing unwanted life events that are truly frightening? And where can we turn for help? What comfort can we find from Scripture to give us courage in these kinds of situations?

The reality that God will go with us through our trial can help us to hope. Isaiah 41:13 tells us, “For I am the LORD your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, ‘Do not fear; I will help you.’ ”

In addition, God offers indescribable, heart-guarding peace when we present our difficulties to Him in prayer (PHIL 4:6–7).

Through God’s unfailing presence and His peace that “transcends all understanding” (V 7), we can find the hope and help we need to endure situations in which we are really scared. - DAVE BRANON

차려입기

작가 로렌 위너는 ‘하나님을 입으라’라는 자신의 책에서 우리가 입은 옷이 아무 말 없이도 다른 이들에게 우리가 누구인지를 알려준다고 말합니다. 우리가 입은 옷이 직업, 소속이나 신분, 기분이나 사회적 지위를 나타내기도 합니다. 선전 문구가 인쇄된 티셔츠, 비즈니스 정장, 제복, 기름 묻은 청바지를 보고 그것들이 무엇을 드러내 보이는지 생각해보십시오. 그녀는 “옷이 말없이 무언가를 드러내는 것처럼,
그리스도인들도 말없이 예수를 전할 수 있다는 생각이 설득력이 있습니다.”라고 기록하고 있습니다.

바울에 의하면 우리도 마찬가지로 말없이 그리스도를 나타낼 수 있습니다. 로마서 13장 14절은 “오직 주 예수 그리스도로 옷 입고 정욕을 위하여 육신의 일을 도모하지 말라”고 가르칩니다. 이게 무슨 뜻일까요? 그것은 우리가 그리스도인이 되면 그리스도의 정체성을 입는다는 뜻입니다. 우리는 “믿음으로 말미암아 하나님의 자녀”가 되었습니다(갈라디아서 3:26-27). 그것이 우리의 신분입니다. 하지만 우리는 날마다 그리스도의 성품으로 차려입어야 합니다. 그러기 위해서는 예수님을 위해 살려고 노력하고 예수님을 더 닮아가기 위해 노력하며, 경건과 사랑과 순종함으로 성장하고, 한 때 우리를 노예로 삼았던 죄로부터 돌이켜야 합니다.

성경공부와 기도, 그리고 성도와의 교제 시간을 통해 주님과 더 가까워지기를 바라는 우리의 소망과, 우리 안에서 일하시는 성령으로 말미암아 우리는 그리스도 안에서 자라갑니다(요한복음 14:26). 우리의

Dressed Up

In her book Wearing God, author Lauren Winner says our clothes can silently communicate to others who we are. What we wear may indicate career, community or identity, moods, or social status. Think of a T-shirt with a slogan, a business suit, a uniform, or greasy jeans and what they might reveal. She writes, “The idea that, as with a garment, Christians might wordlessly speak something of Jesus—is appealing.”

According to Paul, we can similarly wordlessly represent Christ. Romans 13:14 tells us to “clothe [ourselves] with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.” What does this mean? When we become Christians, we take on Christ’s identity. We’re “children of God through faith” (GAL 3:26–27). That’s our status. Yet each day we need to clothe ourselves in His character. We do this by striving to live for and to be more like Jesus, growing in godliness, love, and obedience and turning our back on the sins that once enslaved us.

This growth in Christ is a result of the Holy Spirit working in us and our desire to be closer to Him through study of the Word, prayer, and time spent in fellowship with other Christians (JOHN 14:26).
