예수님이 전해지도록

한 노인이 뉴욕의 거리를 조깅하다 어느 노숙자의 도와달라는 팻말 옆에 놓인 낡은 운동화를 보았습니다. 자기 신발과 사이즈가 비슷하다는 것을 안 노인은 젊은 노숙자에게 자기 신발과 (양말까지!) 벗어주고는 맨발로 집에 걸어갔습니다. 그는 현장을 떠나면서 이런 말을 남겼습니다. “나는 한평생 축복을 받았습니다. 하나님께서 나에게 큰 은혜를 베푸셨으니 나도 당신을 축복합니다.”

이 노인이 하나님께서 은혜를 주셨기 때문에 다른 사람에게 친절을 베푼 것처럼, 예수님을 믿는 사람들은 “[우리] 자신을... 자비로 옷입으라”(골로새서 3:12) 하는 부름을 받았습니다. 우리가 무슨 행동이나 말을 할 때엔 사실상 “주 예수님을 대신하듯” 해야 합니다(17절). 우리는 친절함에 더하여 “자비, 겸손, 온유, 인내”(12절)와 같은 성품을 지녀야 합니다. 성령의 열매(갈라디아서 5:22-23)는 우리 안에 성령이 거하심으로 우리 안에서 자라는 것입니다. 그리고 이 열매는 우리를 향한 하나님의 사랑을 다른 사람들에게 흘려보낼 때 나타나며, “온전하게 매는 띠”(골로새서 3:14)가 되어 이 모든 선한 것을 하나로 묶어 줍니다.

조깅하던 그분처럼 우리도 격려의 한마디와 사려 깊은 행동, 그리고 때로는 자신의 신발까지 벗어줄 수 있는 기회를 늘 찾아야 합니다. 그렇게 하면서 예수님을 전하도록 합시다(17절).

POINTING TO JESUS

An older man jogging down a street in New York City stopped in his tracks when he noticed a pair of battered sneakers placed near a homeless man’s sign requesting help. When the jogger learned that the two men wore a similar size, he gave the younger, homeless man the shoes (and socks!) off his feet and walked home barefoot. But not before explaining, “I’ve been blessed my whole life. God has been very good to me, so I feel like I should bless you too.”

Just as this man showed kindness to another because God had been good to him, so too believers in Jesus are called to “clothe [our]selves with . . . kindness” (COLOSSIANS 3:12). In fact, in whatever we do or say, we’re to do it as “a representative of the Lord Jesus” (V. 17 NLT). Along with kindness, we’re also to embody the characteristics of “compassion, . . . humility, gentleness and patience” (V. 12). The fruit of the Spirit (GALATIANS 5:22-23) grows in us because we have the Spirit dwelling inside us; and this fruit is evidenced by God’s love for us flowing out to others—binding all these virtues “together in perfect unity” (COLOSSIANS 3:14).

Like the jogger, may we be on alert for opportunities to be kind—an encouraging word, a thoughtful act, or even giving the shoes off our feet—and as we do, let’s point to Jesus (V. 17).

잊을 수 없는 교훈

“옥상 위의 목사”로 불리는 코리 브룩스 목사는 지역사회의 변화를 이끌기 위해 시카고 남쪽에 있는 교회 옥상에서 343일 동안을 생활 하며 지냈습니다. 브룩스 목사는 자기에게 잊을 수 없는 4가지 교훈을 가르쳐 준 초등학교 은사 조 스톡스에게 온라인으로 감사의 인사를 올렸습니다. 그 교훈은 인내의 힘, 정직의 중요성, 지역사회 참여의 가치, 그리고 교육의 영향 이었습니다.

마태복음 5:3-12에서 지혜의 궁극적인 구현이신 예수님은 그를 믿는 사람들의 내면의 자세에 대해 정확히 말씀하셨습니다. 예수님은 이에 더하여 그들은 영향력이 큰 사람이라고 하셨습니다. “너희는 세상의 소금이라”(13절). “너희는 세상의 빛이라”(14절)고 하셨습니다. 이 말씀처럼 우리에게는 “[우리의] 빛을 비치게 하여... 사람들이 [우리의] 착한 행실을 보고 하늘에 계신 [우리의] 아버지께 영광을 돌리게”(16절) 하는 귀한 사명이 있습니다.

UNFORGETTABLE LESSONS

Corey Brooks—“The Rooftop Pastor”—spent 343 days living on the rooftop of his church on Chicago’s south side to inspire community transformation. Online, Brooks posted a “shout-out” to his elementary school teacher Joe Stokes, who taught him four unforgettable lessons: the power of perseverance, the importance of integrity, the value of community engagement, and the impact of education.

By embracing Solomon’s wisdom in Proverbs 3, we likewise can strive to live in ways that have community impact. Solomon taught four lessons that are just right for those who trust in God and are called to be a positive force: “Trust in the Lord” (V. 5); “fear the Lord and shun evil” (V. 7); “honor the Lord with your wealth” (V. 9); “do not despise the Lord’s discipline” (V. 11). Such wisdom compels us to be God-focused, but there are peopletouching dimensions to our faith too.

In Matthew 5:3-12, Jesus, the ultimate embodiment of wisdom, eloquently described the internal disposition of believers in Jesus. Furthermore, He reminded them that they were high-impact people. “You are the salt of the earth” (V. 13). “You are the light of the world” (V. 14). As such, we are honored to “Let [our] light shine . . . that they may see [our] good deeds and glorify [our] Father in heaven” (V. 16).

교회 되기

어느 화창한 오후, 나는 수단에서 온 옆집 가족과 함께 분필로 길바닥에 그림을 그리고 있었습니다. 그때 그 옆집에서 몇 사람이 모여 예배를 드리며 찬송을 부르는 소리가 들려왔습니다. 나와 이야기를 나누던 아이 엄마가 무슨 일인가 궁금해 해서 우리는 함께 그리로 가 귀를 기울였습니다. 그러자 그 집 사람들이 예배에 함께하도록 우리를 초대했습니다. 한 청년이 세례를 받기 위해 물을 가득 담은 수조 안에 서 있었습니다. 그는 자신의 죄를 용서받고 예수님을 따르기로 결심한 간증을 했습니다.

우리가 바로 이웃집 마당에서 구원의 간증을 들을 수 있었던 특별한 기회였습니다. 그때 그 사람들이 바로 우리 동네의 교회였습니다.

예수님은 지금도 전세계에 자신의 교회를 세우고 계십니다. 승천하기 전, 예수님이 제자들에게 말씀하시기를 그들에게 성령을 보내어 그들 안에 거하게 하고 그들은 “땅 끝까지”(사도행전 1:8) 가서 증인이 될 것이라고 하셨습니다. 예수님은 제자들의 성령 충만한 설교와 가르침을 통해 그의 교회를 세우신다고 하셨습니다. 그리고 하나님은 곧 “구원받는 사람을 날마다 더하게”(2:47) 하셨습니다.

BEING THE CHURCH

On a sunny afternoon, I drew with sidewalk chalk with the Sudanese family next door. We could hear singing coming from the house next to theirs, where a small group holds worship services. The young mom I was talking with was curious about what was going on, so she and I walked over and listened in. They invited us to gather with them. A young man, standing in a tank filled with water for baptism, spoke about receiving forgiveness for his sins and committing himself to follow Jesus.

This was a unique opportunity for us to hear a testimony of salvation in the yard right next door. This group was being the church in our neighborhood.

Jesus is building His church around the world. In the days before His ascension, He told His followers that He would send the Spirit to live in them and that they would be His witnesses “to the ends of the earth” (ACTS 1:8). He would build His church through their Spirit-empowered preaching and teaching. And immediately God began to add “to their number daily those who were being saved” (2:47).

We can be a part of building Christ’s church by being His church as we live out our faith in our neighborhoods and share with others what He’s done for us. He gave His life and was resurrected so that we might be forgiven and have eternal life. And He’ll help us learn how to serve others in His church today.

너그럽게 맞이하기

몇 해 전, 우리 교회는 그들의 정권이 바뀌면서 고국을 떠나온 난민들을 맞이했습니다. 난민들은 각 가족이 작은 가방 하나에 들어갈 만한 짐만 가지고 왔습니다. 우리 교회에서는 몇 가정이 그들을 집으로 받아들였는데, 그 교인들 중 어떤 집은 빈 공간이 별로 없는 형편이었습니다.

이러한 은혜로운 환대는 약속의 땅에 정착하기 전 이스라엘 백성에게 주신 하나님의 명령을 떠올리게 합니다. 그들은 농경 사회에서 추수의 중요성을 잘 알고 있었습니다. 다음해 추수까지 버티려면 식량 한 톨이 중요했습니다. 하나님은 이스라엘 백성에게 추수할 때 혹 떨구고 온 것이 있더라도 되돌아가 가져오지 말라고 하셨습니다. “나그네와 고아와 과부를 위하여 남겨두라” (신명기 24:19)고 하셨습니다. 가진 것이 많기 때문에 주는 것이 아니라 하나님이 주실 것을 믿는 마음으로 베풀라는 것입니다. “그리하면 네 하나님 여호와께서 네 손으로 하는 모든 일에 복을 내리시리라”(19절). 하나님은 언제나 풍족하신 분입니다.

그들은 이렇게 남을 맞아주면서 그들도 “애굽 땅에서 종 되었던 것”(22절)을 상기했습니다. 우리가 그런 압제는 당하지 않았을 지는 몰라도 우리는 모두 외톨이가 되거나 궁핍한 처지에 놓였던 경험은 있습니다. 다른 사람들에게 베풀 때, 우리는 우리에게 가장 기본적으로 필요한 죄로부터의 자유를 기억하는 것이 좋습니다. “우리가 아직 죄인 되었을 때에 그리스도께서 우리를 위하여 죽으셨느니라”(로마서 5:8).

우리가 남을 맞이할 때, 후히 베푸시는 하나님을 찬양하는 것입니다. 그분은 “즐겨내는 자를 사랑하시는”(고린도후서 9:7) 분입니다.

HOSPITABLE GENEROSITY

A few years ago, our church hosted refugees fleeing their country because of a change in their political leadership. Entire families came with only what they could fit in a small bag. Several of our church families opened their homes, some with little room to spare.

Such gracious hospitality echoes God’s command to the Israelites before they inhabited the promised land. As an agricultural society, they understood the importance of the harvest. Every bit of food would be essential to get them through until next year’s harvest. God told the Israelites when harvesting not to go back to retrieve what they may have missed. “Leave it for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow” (DEUTERONOMY 24:19). They were to practice generosity not by giving when they knew they had enough but by giving out of a heart of trusting in God’s provision “so that the Lord [their] God may bless [them] in all the work of their hands” (V. 19). God always has enough.

The practice of hospitality also reminded them that they had been “slaves in Egypt” (V. 22). While we may not have experienced such oppression, we’ve all experienced being an outsider or being in need. As we give to others, we do well to remember our most basic need: freedom from our sin. “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (ROMANS 5:8).

When we’re hospitable, we celebrate our generous God, who “loves a cheerful giver” (2 CORINTHIANS 9:7).

마음 속에 있는 것을 기도하세요

브렌다와 에디는 차에 오르며 목요일 저녁마다 하는 대화를 시작했습니다. “어디 가서 먹을까?” “난 상관없어요, 에디. 아무데나 다 좋아요.” 에디가 늘 듣는 대답입니다. “그럼 윈드밀 식당은 어때?” 브렌다가 즉각 반대합니다. “아니, 거기 말고 다른데 아무데나 가요!” 에디가 한숨을 쉬며 “그럼 어디로?” 합니다. 브렌다는 “정말 아무 데나 다 좋다니까요”라고 같은 말을 합니다.

이것은 코미디의 소재라 할 만합니다. 우리에게도 이런 짜증나는 순간이 있기에 남들의 모습에서 재미를 느낍니다.

우리의 기도 생활도 때로는 그럴 수 있습니다. 너무나 막연한 기도를 하는 것입니다. 다니엘은 이와 반대로 자신이 원하는 것을 다니엘서 9장에서 담대하게 말하고 있습니다. 그는 먼저 자기 백성의 죄를 고백합니다. “우리는 이미 범죄하여 패역하였습니다”(5절). 그리고는 이렇게 간구합니다. “우리 하나님이여 지금 주의 종의 기도와 간구를 들으소서”(17절). “주여 들으소서 주여 용서하소서 주여 귀를 기울이시고 행하소서”(19절). 다니엘에게 빚진 것이 하나도 없는 하나님이셨지만, 다니엘은 이렇게 하나님의 “큰 긍휼”(18절)을 신뢰하며 자신이 소망하는 것을 모두 하나님께 간구할 수 있었습니다.

예수님이 십자가에 못 박히시기 전날 밤 하나님 아버지께 기도하신 것처럼 “나의 원대로 마시옵고 아버지의 원대로 하옵소서”(마태복음 26:39)라고 기도하는 것은 언제나 옳습니다. 그러나 우리가 원하는 것을 솔직하게 말하는 것이 마땅한 경우도 있습니다. 하나님은 우리가 회개하는 마음으로 그 앞에 나아갈 때 우리의 담대함을 귀히 여기십니다. 그러므로 마음속에 있는 것을 담대하게 기도로 아뢰고, 그 다음 일은 자비의 하나님께 맡기도록 하십시다.

PRAY WHAT’S ON YOUR HEART

Brenda and Eddie got in the car and began their Thursday evening ritual. “Where would you like to eat?” “Oh, Eddie, I don’t care, anywhere is fine, really.” Eddie’s been here before. “Okay, how about The Windmill?” Brenda bristles. “No, anywhere but there!” Eddie sighs. “So where, then?” Brenda insists, “Really, anywhere is fine.”

It’s the stuff of comedy sketches, humorous from a distance because we know how maddening it is in the moment.

Sometimes it can be that way in our prayer lives too. We’re too vague. In contrast, the prayer in Daniel 9 reveals Daniel boldly saying what he wants. First, he confesses the sins of his people: “We have sinned and done wrong” (V. 5). Then he makes his requests. “Now, our God, hear the prayers and petitions of your servant” (V. 17). “Lord, listen! Lord, forgive! Lord, hear and act” (V. 19). God owed nothing to Daniel, but such was Daniel’s trust in God’s “great mercy” (V. 18), that he felt free to bring the full weight of his desires to Him.

It’s always right to pray “not as I will, but as you will,” as Jesus prayed to His Father the night before He was crucified (MATTHEW 26:39). But there are also times when saying what we want is the way forward. God honors our boldness when we come before Him with repentant hearts. So be bold, pray what’s on your heart, and entrust it to the God of great mercy.

나를 살피시는 하나님

남편의 뇌졸중으로 썬의 삶은 갑자기 바뀌었습니다. 썬은 남편의 일상생활을 도울 수 밖에 없게 되었고, 남편이 감정적으로 예민해질 때에도 이를 잘 감당해야 했습니다. 그는 이렇게 17년 동안 남편을 잘 돌보았습니다. 그러나 남편이 낙상으로 인해 건강이 더 악화되면서 간병에 한계를 느낀 썬은 우울증에 걸리게 되었습니다. 그는 “믿음마저 다 잃은 것 같고, 하나님도 보이지 않았다”고 했습니다.

그러나 지금 썬은 지난 날을 돌아보며 하나님이 자신을 살피시고 계셨다는 것을 믿습니다. 왜냐하면 하나님이 남편이 집에서 장기간 치료를 받는데 필요한 보조금을 제공해 주셨고, 사회복지사들을 보내셔서 간병하느라 생긴 썬의 정서적 고통을 돌보아 주었기 때문입니다.

하나님은 하갈의 이야기에서도 살피시는 하나님으로 자신을 나타내셨 습니다. 창세기 16장에서 노예였던 하갈은 여주인의 학대를 피해 도망쳐 나왔습니다(6절). 그때에 “여호와의 사자”가 “광야의 샘물 곁”에서 하갈을 찾아 오셨습니다(7절). 그는 하갈에게 “[그녀의] 여주인에게 돌아가라”(9절)고 재촉 하며 하나님이 그녀를 축복하실 것을 확신시켜 주었습니다. 하갈은 당시의 사회에서 하찮은 존재에 불과했지만 하나님은 그녀의 삶을 잘 보살펴 주셨습니다. 하갈은 이에 감사하며 “나를 살피시는 하나님이라”(13절)라고 했습니다.

하나님은 우리가 역경에 처할 때도 우리를 살피십니다. 우리가 결코 혼자가 아닌 이유는, 사랑의 하나님 아버지는 우리의 처지를 아시고 또 신뢰할 수 있는 분이시기 때문입니다. 우리는 그분께 도와달라고 부르짖을 수 있으며, 그때 하나님이 우리를 일으켜 주실 것입니다.

GOD SEES ME

When Sun’s husband had a stroke, her life took a dramatic turn. She found herself having to assist her husband with the activities of daily living and cope with his emotional outbursts. For seventeen years, she’d faithfully cared for her husband. When a fall hastened his decline, however, the weight of caregiving finally became too much, and Sun sank into depression. “I felt I’d lost my faith,” she shared, “and I couldn’t see God.”

But looking back, Sun now believes that God saw her because He provided subsidized home medical and nursing care to manage her husband’s chronic condition and sent social workers to support Sun in managing the emotional challenges of caregiving.

God revealed himself as the God who sees in the story of Hagar. In Genesis 16, the slave Hagar was running away from her mistress’ mistreatment (V. 6) when the “angel of the Lord” found her “near a spring in the desert” (V. 7). He urged Hagar to “go back to [her] mistress” (V. 9) and assured her of His blessing. Even though Hagar was a nobody in her culture, God was watching out for her well-being. In gratitude, Hagar declared, “You are the God who sees me” (V. 13).

God sees us in our distress too. We’re never alone because our loving Father knows our situation, and He’s trustworthy. We can cry out to Him for help, and He’ll lift us up.

하나님과 함께 동행

그날은 화요일이어서 체육관의 트랙을 걷는 사람들이 시계 방향으로 도는 날이었습니다. 아내가 합류한 첫번째 그룹은 그렇게 걷고 있었습니다. 그런데 한 사람이 트랙에 들어서더니 시계 반대 방향으로 도는 것이었습니다. 그 여인의 친구 두 명이 합류하더니 또 다른 사람이 합류했습니다. 갑자기 엉망이 된 트랙은 몇 분이 지나서야 정상을 회복했습니다.

반대 방향으로 걸었던 사람들이 나쁜 뜻으로 그런 것은 아니었지만, 나는 그럴 때 생기는 파급 효과에 대해 생각하지 않을 수 없었습니다. 잘못된 길로 들어선 그 한 사람으로 다른 사람들도 따라가게 되고, 이것은 계속 이어집니다. 잠언 13장 20절의 “지혜로운 자와 동행하면 지혜를 얻고 미련한 자와 사귀면 해를 받느니라” 하는 말씀과 비슷합니다. 잘못된 길로 가는 사람을 따라가면 문제가 생깁니다.

갈라디아서 5장에서 바울은 그러한 잘못이 우리의 영적 발전을 어떻게 가로막는지를 설명합니다. “너희가 달음질을 잘 하더니 누가 너희를 막아 진리를 순종하지 못하게 하더냐 그 권면은 너희를 부르신 이에게서 난 것이 아니니라”(7-8절)고 했습니다. 순종을 원하시는 하나님은 우리를 진리에서 멀어져 “요동하게” 하지 않으십니다(10절). 그러나 하나님의 진리를 거스르는 사람들은 우리를 하나님에게서 멀어지게 하여 영적 삶에 방해가 될 수 있습니다.

하나님께서는 우리의 인도자가 되기를 원하십니다. 우리가 하나님과 함께 걸으면 결코 잘못된 곳에서 헤매지 않을 것입니다.

WALKING WITH GOD

It was Tuesday at the gym, so the people walking around the track were supposed to go clockwise. The first walkers my wife joined were doing that. But then another person walked onto the track going counterclockwise. A couple of her friends joined her—and then another. Suddenly there was chaos on the track— and it took a few minutes to restore order.

While the wrong-way walkers intended no harm, I couldn’t help but think about the power of influence. One person headed the wrong way leads to another, and on it goes. It’s a bit like Proverbs 13:20: “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.” Following a person going the wrong way leads to trouble.

In Galatians 5, Paul explains how such a mistake can halt our spiritual progress. “You were running a good race,” he says. “Who cut in on you to keep you from obeying the truth? That kind of persuasion does not come from the one who calls you” (VV. 7-8). God, who desires obedience, never leads us away from truth and “into confusion” (V. 10). But those who oppose His truth can hamper our spiritual walk by redirecting us from Him.

God wants to be our guide. When we walk with Him, we’ll never wander in the wrong direction.

보이는 것 너머를 믿는다

19세기 후반, 미국의 거대한 세쿼이아 숲에는 들어갈 수 있는 사람이 거의 없었습니다. 그러다 보니 그 안의 거대한 나무들에 대한 기록을 믿지 않는 사람들이 많았습니다. 그러나 1892년, 네 명의 벌목공이 캘리포니아의 빅 스텀프 포레스트에 들어가 13일 동안 마크 트웨인이라 불리는 거목을 베었습니다. 이 나무는 수령이 1,341 년이나 되었고 높이는 300피트(90미터), 둘레는 50피트(15미터)에 달했습니다. 이를 보았던 한 사람은 트웨인을 “웅장한 규모의 이 나무는 산림 속에서 본 가장 완벽한 나무의 하나”라고 설명했습니다. 지금은 사라진 이 놀라운 나무의 한 부분이 미국 자연사 박물관으로 옮겨져 지금은 누구나 이 세쿼이아를 볼 수 있습니다.

그러나 사실 우리는 눈으로만 모든 진실을 확인할 수는 없습니다. 히브리서에서는 믿음을 “바라는 것들의 실상이요 보이지 않는 것들의 증거” (히브리서 11:1)라고 말합니다. 믿음이란 비이성적이거나 공상이 아닙니다. 왜냐하면 모든 이야기는 인류 역사에 찾아오신 한 분, 곧 예수님에 근거하기 때문입니다. 믿음에는 인간의 감성과 이성이 포함되지만 그것이 전부가 아닙니다. 믿음에는 또 다른 것이 필요합니다. 히브리서 기자는 “믿음으로 모든 세계가 하나님의 말씀으로 지어진 줄을 우리가 아나니, 보이는 것은 나타난 것으로 말미암아 된 것이 아니니라”(3절)고 말합니다.

만져지지 않고, 보이지 않고, 이해가 잘 안 되는 것을 믿는다는 것은 어려운 일입니다. 그러나 우리는 성령의 도우심으로 그리스도에 대한 믿음을 가지고 눈에 보이는 것 너머에 있는 것을 믿을 수가 있습니다.

BELIEVING MORE THAN WE SEE

In the late nineteenth century, few people had access to the great sequoia groves in the United States, and many didn’t believe the reports of the massive trees. In 1892, however, four lumberjacks ventured into the Big Stump Forest in California and spent thirteen days felling the grand tree named Mark Twain. Twain was 1,341 years old, three hundred feet tall, and fifty feet in circumference. One observer described Twain as a tree “of magnificent proportions, one of the most perfect trees in the grove.” They shipped part of this remarkable beauty, now destroyed, to the American Museum of Natural History, where everyone could see a sequoia.

The reality, though, is that we can’t prove every truth with our eyes alone. Hebrews describes faith as “confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see” (HEBREWS 11:1). Faith isn’t irrational or a fit of fancy, because the whole story is grounded in a person—Jesus—who has entered human history. Faith includes human senses and reason, but it’s not limited to them. Faith requires more. “By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command,” Hebrews says, “so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible” (V. 3).

It’s often difficult to trust what we can’t touch or see or completely comprehend. But our faith in Christ, made possible by the Spirit, helps us to believe more than we can see.

고난을 통한 성장

뇌의 크기는 상당히 작고 스트레스를 받으면 더 작아질 수 있습니다. 최근 연구에 따르면 스트레스가 누적되면 우리 뇌에서 감정과 충동과 사람들과의 상호작용을 관리하는 전두엽 피질이 줄어들 수 있다고 합니다. 전두엽의 위축은 불안과 우울증과 관련이 있기 때문에 평생 동안의 스트레스가 얼마나 큰 피해를 가져올 수 있는지 분명히 알 수 있습니다. 그러나 좋은 소식도 있습니다. 뇌에는 재생능력이 있어서 운동이나 명상, 좋은 인간관계와 같은 활동을 계속하면 치유될 수 있다는 것입니다.

시편 119편의 기자는 스트레스와 고난을 겪은 후의 치유와 성장에 대한 개념을 잘 알고 있습니다. “고난당한 것이 내게 유익이라 이로 말미암아 내가 주의 율례들을 배우게 되었나이다”(71절). 고난은 고통스럽지만 시편 기자에게 가르침을 주었습니다. 하나님으로부터 벗어나 “그릇 행하였으나”, “주의 말씀을 지키기로” 결정했습니다(67절). 시편 기자는 입에 쓴 약과 하나님의 선하심에 감사를 표현합니다(68절). 그는 고난과 고통이 자신을 위축시킬 수 있지만, 하나님은 그러한 경험을 사용해 자신을 단련하고 회복시켜 주실 것을 믿었습니다(66절).

우리의 두뇌처럼 우리의 영성도 단련할 수 있습니다. 하나님은 이런 단련을 통해 성장하게 하시고, 회복시키십니다. 하나님은 성경과 기도와 성령으로 새로워진 시각을 통해 고난의 결과를 바꾸어 놓을 수 있습니다. 우리의 영적 성장을 위해 고난을 사용하실 수 있는 하나님은 고통을 좋은 목적으로 바꾸어 놓으십니다.

GROWTH THROUGH PAIN

The brain is remarkably small, but stress can make it even smaller. Recent research has revealed that cumulative stress can shrink the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for managing emotions, impulses, and social interactions. This shrinkage is linked to anxiety and depression, highlighting the toll that a lifetime of stress can take. But there’s good news—the brain’s plasticity allows it to heal through intentional practices like exercise, meditation, and meaningful relationships.

The psalmist in Psalm 119 understood this idea of growth and healing after facing stress and hardship: “It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees” (V. 71). Affliction, though painful, became the psalmist’s teacher—taking us from being “astray” from God to choosing to “obey [His] word” (V. 67). The psalmist expresses gratitude for his bitter medicine and God’s goodness (V. 68). While he understood that affliction and suffering could diminish him, he trusted God to use those experiences to refine and restore him (V. 66).

Like our brains, our spirits are capable of being stretched. God uses this stretching to cause growth and renewal. Through Scripture, prayer, and a Spirit-inspired perspective, He can reverse the effects of our hardships. He can use our afflictions for our spiritual growth, transforming pain into purpose.

긍정적인 낙서

저널리스트 세바스찬 융거는 젊은 시절 미국을 여행하며 기행문을 썼습니다. 1980년대의 어느 날 그는 플로리다 키스의 한 화장실에 들어갔다가 벽에 휘갈겨 쓴 혐오스러운 낙서를 보았습니다. 그 대부분은 쿠바 이민자들을 겨냥한 것이었습니다. 그러나 어느 쿠바인이 쓴 것으로 보이는 한 메시지가 눈길을 끌었습니다. “하나님께 감사한 것은 이 나라의 나머지 사람들은 마음이 따뜻하고 배려심이 있어 1962년에 나를 기꺼이 맞아 주었습니다.”라고 적혀 있었습니다. 융거는 이렇게 기록했습니다. “그 남자 화장실 벽에는 미국의 가장 나쁜 모습과 가장 훌륭한 모습이 함께 있었다.”

POSITIVE GRAFFITI

As a young man, journalist Sebastian Junger traveled the United States and wrote about it. One day in the 1980s, he entered a restroom in the Florida Keys and found hateful graffiti scrawled on the walls. Most of it targeted Cuban immigrants. But one message, apparently from a Cuban, stood out. It read, “Thank God the rest of the people in this country are warm and caring and welcomed me in ’62.” Junger observed, “The very worst things about America were on that men’s-room wall, and the very best.”

How are we to respond to the poisonous messages we so often encounter? The book of Proverbs offers sound counsel. Solomon, who compiled most of the book, brackets chapter 15 with similar imagery: “the mouth of the fool gushes folly” (V. 2), and “the mouth of the wicked gushes evil” (V. 28). The chapter begins, however, with the antidote to such venom: “A gentle answer turns away wrath” (V. 1). Solomon also noted, “The soothing tongue is a tree of life” (V. 4). Always, a patient response is key: “The heart of the righteous weighs its answers” (V. 28).

How might God use our words when we ask Him to help us weigh them before our mouths, our pens, or our keyboards spew venom and vitriol at our fellow humans? As the proverb says, “How good is a timely word!” (V. 23). TIM
