폭풍 속에서 함께 하심
식구가 여섯 명인 우리 교회 한 교인의 집이 완전히 불타버렸습니다. 아버지와 아들은 살아남았지만, 아버지는 아직 입원 중이고 그의 아내와 어머니, 그리고 어린 두 자녀는 목숨을 잃었습니다. 안타깝게도 이런 가슴 아픈 사건들은 반복해서 계속 일어납니다. 그런 일이 일어날 때마다 묻게 되는 오래된 질문이 있습니다. ‘왜 좋은 사람들에게 나쁜 일이 일어날까?’ 그리고 이 오래된 질문에 새로운 답이 없다는 것도 그리 놀랍지 않습니다.
하지만 시편 46편의 저자가 언급한 진리 또한 지금껏 계속 되풀이되고 반복하며 받아들여져 왔습니다. “하나님은 우리의 피난처시요 힘이시니 환난 중에 만날 큰 도움이시라”(1절). 2절과 3절에 기록된 땅과 산이 요동치며 바닷물이 맹렬히 넘쳐나는 상황은 큰 재앙과도 같습니다. 이 시적으로 묘사된 폭풍우 한가운데에 우리가 있다고 상상만 해도 오싹합니다. 그런데 실제로 우리는 그러한 상황에 놓일 때가 있습니다. 불치병으로 극심한 고통을 당하거나 엄청난 경제적 위기에 시달릴 때, 그리고 사랑하는 사람의 죽음으로 망연자실한 경우 등입니다.
우리는 하나님이 함께 계시지 않아서 어려움이 생겼다고 쉽게 합리화합니다. 그러나 그런 생각은 성경의 진리와 상반됩니다. “만군의 여호와께서 우리와 함께 하시니 야곱의 하나님은 우리의 피난처시로다”(7,11절). 그분은 우리가 견딜 수 없는 상황에 있을 때 우리와 함께 하시며, 선하시고 사랑하시며 신뢰할 수 있는 그분의 성품 안에서 우리는 위안을 얻을 수 있습니다.

Present in the Storm
Fire swept through the home of a family of six from our church. Although the father and son survived, the father was still hospitalized while his wife, mother, and two small children were laid to rest. Unfortunately, heartbreaking events like this continue to happen again and again. When they’re replayed, so is the age-old question: Why do bad things happen to good people? And it doesn’t surprise us that this old question doesn’t have new answers.
Yet the truth that the psalmist puts forth in Psalm 46 has also been replayed and rehearsed and embraced repeatedly. “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble” (V 1). The conditions described in verses 2–3 are catastrophic—earth and mountains moving and sea waters raging. We shudder when we imagine being in the midst of the stormy conditions poetically pictured here. But sometimes we do find ourselves there—in the swirling throes of a terminal illness, tossed about by a devastating financial crisis, stung and stunned by the deaths of loved ones.
It’s tempting to rationalize that the presence of trouble means the absence of God. But the truth of Scripture counters such notions. “The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress” (VV 7, 11). He is present when our circumstances are unbearable, and we find comfort in His character: He is good, loving, and trustworthy. - ARTHUR JACKSON
