보이지 않는 실상
디스커버 매거진의 스티븐 카스 편집장은 자신의 일상생활 중에 눈에 보이지 않는 것들의 정체를 알아보기로 마음먹었습니다. 그는 뉴욕 시내에 있는 사무실로 걸어가면서 생각해보았습니다. “만약 내가 전자파를 눈으로 볼 수 있다면 [수많은 라디오와 텔레비전 안테나가 있는] 엠파이어스테이트 빌딩 꼭대기는 만화경속에 너울거리는 불꽃으로 도시 전체를 환히 비추겠구나.” 카스는 자신이 라디오와 텔레비전 신호, 와이파이 그리고 그 밖의 많은 것들의 보이지 않는 전자기장에 둘러싸여 있다는 실상을 깨달은 것입니다.
엘리사의 하인은 어느 날 아침 다른 종류의 보이지 않는 실상, 곧 눈으로 볼 수 없는 영적 세계를 알게 되었습니다. 하인이 잠에서 깨어 그와 자기 주인이 아람 군대에 둘러싸여 있다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 하인의 눈에는 힘센 군마를 탄 병사들로만 가득했습니다!(열왕기하 6:15). 하인은 두려웠습니다. 하지만 엘리사는 천사 군단이 적군을 에워싸고 있는 것을 보았기 때문에 자신이 있었습니다. 엘리사는 말했습니다. “우리와 함께 한 자들이 그들과 함께 한 자들보다 많으니라”(16절). 그런 다음 주님께 자기 하인의 눈을 뜨게 하셔서 그 또한 주님께서 적군을 에워싸 그들을 주관하고 계시다는 것을 볼 수 있게 해달라고 간구했습니다(17절).
무엇에 짓눌려 무력하다는 것을 느끼십니까? 하나님이 주관 하시며 우리를 위해 싸우고 계시다는 것을 기억하십시오. “그가 너를 위하여 그의 천사들을 명령하사 네 모든 길에서 너를 지키게 하심이라”(시편 91:11).

Unseen Realities
Stephen Cass, an editor at Discover magazine, was determined to investigate some of the invisible things that are part of his daily life. As he walked toward his office in New York City, he thought: “If I could see radio waves, the top of the Empire State Building [with its host of radio and TV antennas] would be lit like a kaleidoscopic flare, illuminating the entire city.” He realized he was surrounded by an invisible electromagnetic field of radio and TV signals, WiFi, and more.
Elisha’s servant learned about another kind of unseen reality one morning—the invisible spiritual world. He awoke to find himself and his master surrounded by the armies of Aram. As far as his eyes could see, there were soldiers mounted on powerful warhorses (2 KINGS 6:15)! The servant was afraid, but Elisha was confident because he saw the army of angels that surrounded them. He said: “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them” (V 16). Then he asked the Lord to open his servant’s eyes so he too could see that the Lord had surrounded their enemy and He was in control (V 17).
Do you feel overpowered and helpless? Remember that God is in control and fights for you. He “will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways” (PSALM 91:11). - POH FANG CHIA
