어려운 사람을 돌봄
엘비스 서머스가 초인종 소리에 문을 열자 스모키가 서 있었습니다. 이 연약한 여인은 정기적으로 집을 돌며 빈 깡통을 수거해 번 돈으로 겨우 먹고 살고 있었습니다. 엘비스에게 한 아이디어가 떠올라, “어디서 주무시는지 한번 가봐도 될까요?”라고 물었습니다. 스모키가 안내한 곳은 어느 집 옆의 2피트(60센티미터)쯤 되는 맨 흙의 손바닥만 자투리땅이었습니다. 서머스는 측은한 마음에 그녀가 잠이라도 안전하게 잘 수 있도록 “작은 집”을 지어주었습니다. 서머스는 그 아이디어를 확대하여 고펀드미(GoFundMe)를 통해 후원금을 모으기 시작하고, 이웃 교회들과 협력하여 노숙자들을 위해 더 많은 쉼터를 지을 땅을 마련했습니다.
성경은 곳곳에서 하나님의 백성들에게 어려운 사람들을 돌보라고 말합니다. 하나님은 모세를 통해 이스라엘 백성들에게 약속의 땅에 들어갈 준비를 하라고 말씀하시며, “네 손을 [가난한 사람들에게] 펴서 그에게 필요한 대로 쓸 것을 넉넉히 꾸어주라” (신명기 15:8) 고 권면하셨습니다. 이 구절은 또한 “땅에는 언제든지 가난한 자가 그치지 아니할” 거라는 것도 언급하고 있습니다 (11절) . 이것은 굳이 확인해 볼 필요가 없는 사실입니다. 하나님께서 불쌍히 여기시는 마음으로 이스라엘 백성들에게 “네 형제에게 네 손을 펴라” (11절) 고 말씀하신 것처럼, 우리도 어려운 사람들을 도울 방법을 찾아야 합니다.
누구에게나 먹을 것과 쉴 곳, 그리고 물이 필요합니다. 우리가 가진 것이 많지 않더라도, 지금 가지고 있는 것으로 다른 사람들을 돕는데 쓸 수 있도록 하나님께서 인도해 주시기를 바랍니다. 우리가 나누는 것이 샌드위치 한 조각이나 따뜻한 겨울 코트 한 벌이라도, 작은 것이 큰 변화를 일으킬 수 있습니다!

CARING FOR THOSE IN NEED
Elvis Summers answered the door to find Smokey, a frail woman who stopped by regularly to ask for empty cans to return for cash. This money was her primary source of income. Elvis got an idea. “Could you show me where you sleep?” he asked.
Smokey led him to a narrow patch of dirt about two feet wide next to a house. Moved by compassion, Summers built her a “tiny house”—a simple shelter that provided space for her to sleep safely. Summers ran with the idea. He started a GoFundMe page
and teamed with local churches to provide land to build more shelters for others who were homeless.
Throughout the Bible, God’s people are reminded to care for those in need. When God spoke through Moses to prepare the Israelites to enter the promised land, He encouraged them to “be openhearted and freely lend [to the poor] whatever they need”
(DEUTERONOMY 15:8) . This passage also noted that “there will always be poor people in the land” (V. 11) . We don’t have to go far to see this is true. As God compassionately called the Israelites “to be openhanded toward your fellow Israelites” (V. 11) , we too can find ways to help those in need.
Everyone needs food, shelter, and water. Even if we don’t have much, may God guide us to use what we do have to help others. Whether it’s sharing a sandwich or a warm winter coat, small things can make a big difference! JULIE SCHWAB
