성경읽기: 출애굽기 21-22; 마태복음 19

그리스도처럼 온전하게
캐슬린 노리스는 현대사회의 완벽주의를 마태복음에서 묘사된 “온전함”과 자세히 대조하면서 “완벽주의는 내가 알고 있는 가장 무서운 말 중의 하나”라고 기술하고 있습니다. 그녀는 현대사회의 완벽주의를 “사람들을 너무 소심하게 만들어서 필요한 위험조차 감수하지 못하게 만드는 심각한 정신적인 불행”이라고 말합니다. 하지만 마태복음에서 “온전하다”라고 번역된 단어는 실제로 성숙하다, 혹은 완전하다, 혹은 다 갖추었다는 뜻을 의미합니다. 노리스는 “온전해지려면 성장을 위한 여지를 두어야 하고, 자신을 다른 사람에게 내어줄 수 있을 정도로 성숙해야 한다.”고 결론을 내립니다.
온전함의 의미를 이렇게 이해하면, 한 남자가 무슨 좋은 일을 해야 “영생을 얻을” 수 있는지 예수님께 질문한(16절), 마태복음 19장의 심오한 이야기를 깨닫는 데 도움이 됩니다. 예수님은 그 질문에 “계명들을 지키라”(17절)고 대답하셨습니다. 그 남자는 계명을 다 지켰다고 생각했지만 무언가 놓친 것이 있음을 알고, “아직도 무엇이 부족하니이까”(20절)라고 물었습니다.
그때 예수님은 그 남자의 마음을 아주 강하게 붙잡고 있는 것이 바로 재물이라는 것을 아시고, 그가 만약 하나님 나라에 속한 다른 이들과 기꺼이 주고받음으로 “온전하게” 되고자 한다면, 다른 이들에게 굳게 닫혀 있는 마음을 기꺼이 떨쳐버려야 한다고 말씀하셨습니다(21절).
우리는 모두 자기 방식대로의 완벽함을 지니고 있습니다. 그것이 소유이든 습관이든 우리는 그것을 지키려고 있는 힘을 다합니다. 하지만 오늘 이 시간, 모든 것을 내려놓고 주님 안에서만 가능한 온전함으로 자유를 얻으라는 예수님의 부드러운 음성에 귀를 기울이시기 바랍니다(26절).
그러므로 하늘에 계신 너희 아버지의 온전하심과 같이 너희도 온전하라 [마태복음 5:48]

The Bible in One Year: EXODUS 21–22; MATTHEW 19

PERFECT LIKE CHRIST
“Perfectionism is one of the scariest words I know,” Kathleen Norris writes, thoughtfully contrasting modern-day perfectionism with the “perfection” described in the book of Matthew. Modern-day perfectionism she describes as “a serious psychological affliction that makes people too timid to take necessary risks.” But the word translated “perfect” in Matthew actually means mature, complete, or whole. Norris concludes, “To be perfect . . . is to make room for growth [and become] mature enough to give ourselves to others.”
Understanding perfection this way helps makes sense of the profound story told in Matthew 19, where a man asked Jesus what good he could do to “get eternal life” (V. 16). Jesus responded, “Keep the commandments” (V. 17). The man thought he’d obeyed all of them, yet he knew something was missing. “What do I still lack?” (V. 20) he asked.
That’s when Jesus identified the man’s wealth as the vise-grip stifling his heart. He said that if he wanted “to be perfect”—whole, willing to give and receive from others in God’s kingdom—then he must be willing to let go of what was closing off his heart from others (V. 21).
Each of us has our own version of perfection—possessions or habits we cling to as a futile attempt to be in control. Today, hear Jesus’ gentle invitation to surrender—and find freedom in the wholeness that’s only possible in Him (V. 26). MONICA LA ROSE
