우리의 미래를 위한 하나님의 도움
심리학자 메그 제이에 따르면, 우리는 자신의 미래를 우리가 전혀 모르는 사람의 미래처럼 생각한다고 합니다. 왜 그럴까요? 그것은 소위 “공감의 격차” 때문일 것입니다. 우리가 개인적으로 잘 알지 못하는 사람들을 공감하고 배려하는 일은 쉽지 않습니다. 그것은 미래의 우리 자신의 모습을 보아도 마찬가지입니다. 이 심리학자는 그래서 젊은이들이 미래의 자신들의 모습을 상상하면서 준비할 수 있게 도와주는 논문을 썼습니다. 이 논문에는 젊은이들이 미래에 소망하는 삶을 위해 자신의 꿈을 쫓기 위한 길을 닦고 계속해서 힘차게 살아 나가면서 실행 가능한 계획을 세우는 내용을 다루고 있습니다.
시편 90편은 우리에게 “우리의 날을 세는 법을 가르쳐 주셔서 지혜의 마음을 얻도록”(12절, 새번역) 하나님께 도움을 구하라고 하면서, 우리의 현재 삶 뿐만 아니라 우리 생애 전체를 바라보라고 권면합니다. 이 땅에서 우리의 시간이 제한되어 있다는 사실을 기억한다면 하나님을 의지해야만 하는 절박한 필요를 생각하게 될 것입니다. 우리는 지금 이 시간 동안만이 아니라 “평생 동안” 만족과 기쁨을 누리는 방법을 배우기 위해 주님의 도우심이 필요합니다(14 절). 우리 자신만이 아니라 미래 세대를 위해서도 그분의 도우심이 필요합니다 (16절). 또 우리의 손과 마음이 하는 일처럼 우리가 주어진 날 동안 주님을 잘 섬기기 위해서도 그분의 도우심이 필요합니다(17절).

GOD’S HELP FOR OUR FUTURE
According to psychologist Meg Jay, our minds tend to think about our future selves similarly to how we think about complete strangers. Why? It’s probably due to what’s sometimes called the “empathy gap.” It can be hard to empathize and care for people we don’t know personally—even future versions of ourselves. So in her work, Jay tries to help young people imagine their future selves and take steps to care for them. This includes working out actionable plans for who they will one day be—paving the way for them to pursue their dreams and to continue to thrive.
In Psalm 90, we’re invited to see our lives not just in the present, but as a whole—to ask God to help us “number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (V. 12). Remembering that our time on earth is limited can remind us of our desperate need to rely on God. We need His help to learn how to find satisfaction and joy—not just now, but “all our days” (V. 14). We need His help to learn to think not just of ourselves, but of future generations (V. 16). And we need His help to serve Him with the time we’ve been given—as He establishes the work of our hands and hearts (V. 17). - MONICA LA ROSE
