인생의 계절들
얼마 전 ‘겨울나기’라는 유용한 단어를 접하게 되었습니다. 자연세계의 많은 것들이 겨울 동안에 활동을 줄이는 것처럼, 작가 캐서린 메이는 이 단어를 사용하여 인생의 “추운” 계절에는 우리에게도 휴식과 회복이 필요하다고 말합니다. 아버지를 암으로 잃고 몇 달 동안 힘없이 지내고 있던 나에게 이 비유가 도움이 되었습니다. 그 일로 축 처져 사는 것이 싫었던 나는 내 인생의 겨울과 싸우며 여름의 삶이 다시 돌아오기를 기도하고 있었습니다. 그러나 아직 나에게는 모르고 있는 것이 많았습니다.
전도서에는 우리가 많이 들었던 “천하 만사가 다 때가 있다”는 말씀이 있습니다. 심을 때가 있고 심은 것을 거둘 때가 있으며, 울 때가 있고 웃을 때가 있으며, 슬퍼할 때가 있고 춤출 때가 있습니다(3:1-4). 나는 이 말씀을 여러 해 읽었지만 나의 겨울나기를 하면서 비로소 이해가 되기 시작했습니다. 우리는 인생의 계절을 마음대로 조절할 수 없지만, 모든 계절에는 한계가 있어 그 역할을 마치면 지나가게 되어 있습니다. 그리고 우리가 항상 헤아릴 수 있는 것은 아니지만 하나님은 그 계절들을 통해 우리 안에 중요한 어떤 일을 하고 계십니다(11절). 나의 애도 기간이 아직 끝나지 않았지만, 그 기간이 지나면 다시 춤을 추게 될 것입니다. 식물과 동물이 겨울과 싸우지 않는 것처럼, 나도 휴식을 취하며 겨울이 하는 새롭게 하는 일을 할 수 있도록 놓아둘 필요가 있었습니다.
한 친구가 “주님, 이 어려운 시기에 셰리던에게 주님의 선하신 일을 해 주세요.”라고 기도했습니다. 그것은 내 기도보다 더 좋은 기도였습니다. 하나님의 손 안에서 모든 계절에는 그 목적이 있기 때문입니다. 각 사람 안에서 새롭게 하는 사역을 하시는 하나님께 맡겨 드립시다.

SEASONS
I recently came across a helpful word: wintering. Just as winter is a time of slowing down in much of the natural world, author Katherine May uses this word to describe our need to rest and recuperate during life’s “cold” seasons. I found the analogy helpful after losing my father to cancer, which sapped me of energy for months. Resentful of this forced slowing down, I fought against my winter, praying summer’s life would return. But I had much to learn.
Ecclesiastes famously says there’s “a season for every activity under the heavens”—a time to plant and to harvest, to weep and to laugh, to mourn and to dance (3:1–4). I had read these words for years but only started to understand them in my wintering season. For though we have little control over them, each season is finite and will pass when its work is done. And while we can’t always fathom what it is, God is doing something significant in us through them (V. 11). My time of mourning wasn’t over. When it was, dancing would return. Just as plants and animals don’t fight winter, I needed to rest and let it do its renewing work.
“Lord,” a friend prayed, “would You do Your good work in Sheridan during this difficult season.” It was a better prayer than mine. For in God’s hands, seasons are purposeful things. Let’s submit to His renewing work in each one. - SHERIDAN VOYSEY
