동이 서를 만나다

북미 출신의 선생님이 동남아시아 학생들을 잠시 방문하여 가르치면서 학생들로부터 한 가지 교훈을 배웠습니다. 학생들에게 첫 객관식 시험을 치르게 한 그는 많은 답안지들이 공백인 것에 대해 크게 놀랐습니다. 그는 채점을 마치고 시험지를 돌려주며 학생들에게 다음에는 답안지를 공백으로 내지말고 추측을 해서 답안지를 채워 내라고 제안했습니다. 그러자 학생 한 명이 놀란 얼굴로 손을 들어 질문했습니다 . “하지만 만일 제가 추측을 해서 고른 답이 정답이라면 어떡하지요? 그 경우엔 제가 답을 모르면서도 마치 정답을 안다고 한 것이 되지 않겠습니까?” 그 학생과 선생님은 서로 다른 시각과 행동양식을 가지고 있었던 것입니다.

신약시대에 그리스도인으로 개종한 유대인들과 이방인들은 동과 서가 먼 것 만큼 너무나도 다른 시각들을 가지고 그리스도께로 나아오고 있었습니다. 얼마 지나지 않아 그들은 예배하는 날들에서부터 그리스도인들이 마음 놓고 먹고 마실 수 있는 것들이 무엇인지에 이르기까지 다양한 문제들에 서로 다른 의견을 내세우게 되었습니다. 바울 사도는 우리 중 어느 누구도 다른 사람의 마음을 알거나 정죄할 위치에 서 있는 사람은 없다는 중요한 사실을 꼭 기억하라고 그들에게 권고하였습니다.

하나님은 우리가 함께 믿는 자들과 화합할 수 있도록, 모두가 주님 앞에 책임을 져야 할 존재임을 깨닫고, 주님의 말씀과 우리의 양심에따라 행동하라고 권고하십니다. 우리 마음의 태도를 판단하실 수 있는 분은 오직 주님뿐이십니다(로마서 14:4-7).

East Meets West

When students from Southeast Asia met a teacher from North America, the visiting instructor learned a lesson. After giving his class their first multiplechoice test, he was surprised to find many questions left unanswered. While handing back the corrected papers, he suggested that, next time, instead of leaving answers blank they should take a guess. Surprised, one of the students raised their hand and asked, “What if I accidentally get the answer right? I would be implying that I knew the answer when I didn’t.” The student and teacher had a
different perspective and practice.

In the days of the New Testament, Jewish and Gentile converts were coming to Christ with perspectives as different as East and West. Before long they were disagreeing over matters as diverse as worship days and what a Christ-follower is free toeat or drink. The apostle Paul urged them to remember an important fact: None of us is in a position to know or judge the
heart of another.

For the sake of harmony with fellow believers, God urges us to realize that we are all accountable to our Lord, to act according to His Word and our conscience. However, He alone is in a position to judge the attitudes of our heart (ROM. 14:4–7). - MART DEHAAN
