품위 있게 대하기
매기의 젊은 친구가 파격적인 옷차림으로 교회에 나타났습니다. 그러나 그리 놀랄 일은 아니었던 것이 그는 매춘여성이었습니다. 매기가 초대한 그 친구는 자리에 앉아 주위를 의식하여 번갈아가며 자신의 짧은 치마를 잡아당기거나 팔로 몸을 감싸곤 하면서 불안한 모습을 보였습니다.
“추워? 여기 내 숄을 걸쳐.” 옷차림에 신경을 쓰는 그를 매기가 이렇게 자연스럽게 만들어주었습니다.
매기는 단순히 교회에 초대하여 편안하게 해줌으로써 수십 명의 사람들에게 예수님을 전했습니다. 사람의 마음을 끄는 이런 매기의 방법을 통해 복음이 빛이 났습니다. 매기는 누구나 다 품위 있게 대해 주었습니다.
종교지도자들이 간음이라는 가혹한 (그러나 맞는) 죄목으로 한 여인을 예수님 앞에 끌고 왔을 때, 예수님은 그 여인을 고발한 자들을 다 보내고 나서 그와 대화를 시작하셨습니다. 예수님은 그들이 사라진 후 그 여인을 꾸짖으실
수도 있었습니다. 그러나 주님은 “너를 고발하던 그들이 어디 있느냐 너를 정죄한 자가 없느냐”라고 두 질문만 간단히 하셨습니다(요한복음 8:10). 두 번째 질문의 답은 물론 ‘없습니다’ 였습니다. 그러자 예수님은 “나도 너를
정죄하지 않는다”는 한마디로 복음을 주시고, 바로 이어 “가서 다시는 죄을 범하지 말라”고 하시며 변화된 삶으로 초대하셨습니다(11절).
사람들을 향한 진정한 사랑의 힘, 곧 정죄하기를 거부하고, 더 나아가 모든 사람을 품위 있게 대하고 용서를 베푸는 그런 사랑의 힘을 결코 가볍게 여기지 마십시오.

EXTENDING DIGNITY
Maggie’s young friend showed up in church shockingly dressed. No one should have been surprised though; she was a prostitute. Maggie’s visitor shifted uneasily in her seat, alternately tugging at her much-too-short skirt and folding her arms self-consciously around herself.
“Oh, are you cold?” Maggie asked, deftly diverting attention away from how she was dressed. “Here! Take my shawl.”
Maggie introduced dozens of people to Jesus simply by invit- ing them to come to church and helping them feel comfortable. The gospel had a way of shining through her winsome methods. She treated everyone with dignity.
When religious leaders dragged a woman before Jesus with the harsh (and accurate) charge of adultery, Christ kept the attention off her until He sent her accusers away. Once they were gone, He could have scolded her. Instead, He asked two simple questions: “Where are they?” and “Has no one condemned you?” (JOHN 8:10). The answer to the latter question, of course, was no. So Jesus gave her the gospel in one brief statement: “Then neither do I condemn you.” And then the invitation: “Go now and leave your life of sin” (V. 11).
Never underestimate the power of genuine love for people— the kind of love that refuses to condemn, even as it extends dignity and forgiveness to everyone. - TIM GUSTAFSON
