물질 이상의 것을 나누기
“아니, 나눠 갖기 싫어!” 막내 아이가 자기의 많은 레고 조각 중 단 하나라도 나누어 가져야 한다는 말에 속이 상해서 울었습니다. 아이의 철없는 행동을 보고 눈을 치켜뜨기는 했지만 사실 그런 태도는 아이들한테만 있는 것은 아닙니다. 나 자신의 삶에서, 실제 모든 인간들의 경우에서 다른 사람에게 너그럽고 후하게 베풀기를 완강히 거절하는 경우가 얼마나 많이 있는지요?
예수님을 믿는 우리는 우리의 삶까지도 서로 나누라고 부름 받았습니다. 룻은 시어머니인 나오미에게 바로 그렇게 했습니다. 가난한 과부였던 나오미는 룻에게 줄 수 있는 것이 거의 없었습니다. 그러나 룻은 떠나지 않을 것이며 죽어서도 서로 헤어지지 않겠다고 맹세하며 시어머니와 함께 했습니다. 룻은 나오미에게 “어머니의 백성이 나의 백성이 되고 어머니의 하나님이 나의 하나님이 되시리니” (룻기 1:16)라고 말하면서, 사랑과 연민의 마음으로 연로한 시어머니를 너그럽고 후하게 대했습니다.
이런 식으로 우리의 삶을 나누는 것이 쉽지는 않겠지만, 우리는 이같은 관용이 가져다주는 열매를 기억해야 합니다. 룻은 나오미와 삶을 함께 하면서 나중에 아들을 낳았는데, 그 아들이 다윗왕의 할아버지가 됩니다. 예수님은 그분의 생명을 우리와 나누시고, 들림 받아 지금은 하늘에 계신 아버지의 오른편에서 다스리고 계십니다. 우리가 서로 아낌없이 나눌 때 훨씬 더 위대한 삶을 경험하리라는 것을 확신할 수 있습니다!

Sharing More Than Stuff
“But I don’t want to share!” wailed my youngest child, brokenhearted that he would have to part with even one of his many LEGO pieces. I rolled my eyes at his immaturity, but truthfully, this attitude is not limited to children. How much of my own life, and really all of human experience, is marked by a stubborn resistance to freely and generously give to others?
As believers in Jesus, we’re called to share our very lives with one another. Ruth did just that with her mother-in-law, Naomi. As a destitute widow, Naomi had little to offer Ruth. And yet Ruth con-
nected her own life to her mother-in-law’s, vowing that they would press on together and that not even death would separate them. She said to Naomi, “Your people will be my people and your God my God” (RUTH 1:16). She freely and generously gave to the older woman—showing love and compassion.
While sharing our lives in this way can be difficult, we should remember the fruit of such generosity. Ruth shared her life with Naomi, but later she bore a son, the grandfather of King David. Jesus shared His very life with us, but was then exalted and now reigns at the right hand of the Father in heaven. As we generously share with one another, we can be confident that we will experience greater life still! - PETER CHIN
