하나님을 의지하라

친구들과 워터파크에서 공기주입으로 물에 떠다니는 장애물 코스에 도전해 보았습니다. 탄력 있고 미끄러운 기구 위를 똑바로 걷기는 거의 불가능했습니다. 비틀거리면서 경사로를 타고, 뛰어내리기도 하고, 다리를 건너기도 하다가 사정없이 물에 빠질 때면 비명을 질렀습니다. 이렇게 한 코스를 마치고 나서 완전히 지친 내 친구는 숨을 고르려고 “놀이탑” 중 하나에 몸을 기댔습니다. 그러자 바로 그 탑이 친구의 무게 때문에 찌그러지면서 친구는 물 속으로 곤두박질쳤습니다.

워터파크의 약해 빠진 놀이탑과는 달리 성경이 쓰인 시대의 탑은 방어와 보호를 위한 요새였습니다. 사사기 9:50-51은 데베스 사람들이 아비멜렉의 공격을 피해 어떻게 “견고한 망대”로 피했는지 설명합니다. 잠언 18장 10 절에서도 하나님을 견고한 망대의 이미지로 묘사하면서, 하나님은 그분을 신뢰하는 사람들을 구원하시는 분으로 설명했습니다.

그러나 때로 우리는 힘들고 지칠 때 하나님의 견고한 망대에 의지하기보다 우리의 직업이나 인맥, 육체의 편안함 같은 다른 것에 안전과 도움을 구합니다. 그의 재물에서 힘을 찾았던 부자와 우리가 다를 바가 없는 것입니다(11절). 그러나 공기를 넣은 놀이탑이 내 친구를 지탱해주지 못한 것처럼, 이런 것들은 우리에게 정말로 필요한 것을 줄 수 없습니다. 전능하시고 모든 상황을 주관하시는 하나님께서 참된 위로와 안전을 주십니다.

LEAN ON GOD

While at a water park with some friends, we attempted to navigate a floating obstacle course made of inflatable platforms. The bouncy, slippery platforms made walking straight almost impossible. As we wobbled our way across ramps, cliffs, and bridges, we found ourselves yelping as we fell unceremoniously into the water. After completing one course, my friend, completely exhausted, leaned on one of the “towers” to catch her breath. Almost immediately, it buckled under her weight, sending her hurtling into the water.

Unlike the flimsy towers at the water park, in Bible times, a tower was a stronghold for defense and protection. Judges 9:50–51 describes how the people of Thebez fled to “a strong tower” to hide from Abimelek’s attack on their city. In Proverbs 18:10, the writer used the image of a strong tower to describe who God is—the One who saves those who trust Him.

Sometimes, however, rather than lean on the strong tower of God when we’re tired or beaten down, we seek other things for safety and support—a career, relationships, or physical comforts. We’re no different from the rich man who looked for strength in his wealth (V. 11). But just as the inflatable tower couldn’t support my friend, these things can’t give us what we really need. God— who’s all-powerful and in control of all situations—provides true comfort and security.

넘치는 하나님의 은혜

생활비가 빠듯했던 엘렌은 크리스마스 보너스를 받고 기뻤습니다. 그런데 그것으로 끝나지 않고 은행에 돈을 입금하러 갔다가 또 한번 깜짝 선물을 받았습니다. 은행 직원이 크리스마스 선물로 은행에서 1월분 주택융자 상환금을 엘렌의 계좌에 넣어 주었다고 했습니다. 이제 엘렌과 트레이는 다른 청구서도 지불할 수 있었고, 사람들에게 크리스마스 깜짝 선물도 줄 수 있게 되었습니다!

우리의 기대 이상으로 축복하시는 것이 하나님의 방법입니다. 나오미는 남편과 두 아들의 죽음으로 쓰라린 아픔을 겪었습니다(룻기 1:20-21). 이럴 때 나오미의 친척 보아스가 며느리 룻과 결혼하고 두 사람에게 집을 마련해줌으로써 나오미는 절망적인 상황에서 구제받을 수 있었습니다(4:10).

나오미는 여기서 더 바랄 게 없었을 것입니다. 그러나 하나님은 룻과 보아스에게 복 주셔서 그들에게 아들을 주셨습니다. 이제 나오미에게 “[그녀의] 생기를 되찾아 줄 것이며, 늘그막에 [그녀를] 돌보아 줄” 손자가 생긴 것입니다 (15절, 새번역). 그것으로 끝나지 않았습니다. 베들레헴 여인들이 “나오미에게 아들이 태어났다”(17절)고 말했는데, 그 어린 오벳이 자라서 “다윗의 아버지인 이새의 아버지”(17절)가 되었습니다. 나오미의 가족은 역사상 가장 중요한 왕조인 이스라엘 왕의 계보에 들게 된 것입니다! 그리고 그것으로 끝나지 않고 다윗은 예수님의 조상이 되었습니다.

그리스도를 믿는 우리도 나오미와 비슷한 경우라 할 수 있습니다. 주님이 우리를 구원하시기 전에는 우리에게 아무것도 없었습니다. 그러나 이제는 우리를 온전히 받아주신 하나님 아버지께서 우리를 축복하여 다른 사람들을 다시 축복하게 하십니다. 충분히 차고도 넘치는 은혜인 것입니다.

GOD IS MORE THAN ENOUGH

Ellen was on a tight budget, so she was glad to receive a Christmas bonus. That would have been enough, but when she deposited the money, she received another surprise. The teller said that as a Christmas present the bank had deposited her January mortgage payment into her checking account. Now she and Trey could pay other bills and bless someone else with a Christmas surprise!

God has a way of blessing us beyond what we expect. Naomi was bitter and broken by the death of her husband and sons (RUTH 1:20–21). Her desperate situation was rescued by Boaz, a relative who married her daughter-in-law Ruth and provided a home for her and Naomi (4:10).

That might have been all Naomi could hope for. But then God blessed Ruth and Boaz with a son. Now Naomi had a grandson to “renew [her] life and sustain [her] in [her] old age” (V. 15). That would have been enough. As the women of Bethlehem put it, “Naomi has a son!” (V. 17). Then little Obed grew—and became “the father of Jesse, the father of David” (V. 17). Naomi’s family belonged to Israel’s royal line, the most important dynasty in history! That would have been enough. David, however, became the ancestor of . . . Jesus.

If we believe in Christ, we’re in a similar position to Naomi. We had nothing until He redeemed us. Now we’re fully accepted by our Father, who blesses us to bless others. That’s so much more than enough.

우리를 잊지 않으시는 하나님

어렸을 때 나는 우표수집을 했습니다. 앙콩(중국 푸키엔성 방언으로 “할아버지”)이 내 취미에 대해서 듣고 나서 사무실로 오는 우편물에서 매일 우표를 떼어 모으기 시작했습니다. 할머니 할아버지 집에 갈 때마다 앙콩은 나에게 여러 가지 아름다운 우표를 봉투로 하나 가득 주시곤 했습니다. 한번은 할아버지가 “내가 항상 바빠도 너는 안 잊을 거야.”라고 말씀하셨습니다.

앙콩은 남들 앞에서 드러나게 사랑을 표현하지는 않았지만 나는 할아버지에게서 깊은 사랑을 느꼈습니다. 하나님도 “나는 너를 잊지 아니할 것이라”(이사야 49:15)고 선언하시며 이스라엘을 향한 사랑을 한없이 깊이 드러내 보여주셨습니다. 하나님의 백성들은 지난 날 우상숭배와 불순종으로 바벨론에서 고난을 겪으며 “주께서 나를 잊으셨다”(14절)고 한탄했습니다. 그러나 그의 백성을 향한 하나님의 사랑은 변하지 않았습니다. 하나님은 그들에게 용서와 회복을 약속하셨습니다(8-13절).

“내가 너를 내 손바닥에 새겼다”고 옛적에 이스라엘 백성들에게 말씀하셨던 하나님은 오늘날에도 우리에게 말씀하십니다(16절). 나는 확신을 주는 이 말씀을 묵상할 때면 우리를 사랑하여 구원의 손을 펼치신 예수님의 못 자국 난 손을 더욱 깊이 생각하게 됩니다(요한복음 20:24-27). 할아버지의 우표와 다정한 말처럼 하나님은 영원한 사랑의 표시로 그분의 용서의 손을 내밀어 주십니다. 변치 않는 하나님의 사랑에 감사합시다. 하나님은 우리를 결코 잊지 않으십니다.

GOD WON’T FORGET YOU

As a child, I collected postage stamps. When my angkong (Fukienese for “grandfather”) heard of my hobby, he started saving stamps from his office mail every day. Whenever I visited my grandparents, Angkong would give me an envelope filled with a variety of beautiful stamps. “Even though I’m always busy,” he told me once, “I won’t forget you.”

Angkong wasn’t given to overt displays of affection, but I felt his love deeply. In an infinitely deeper way, God demonstrated His love toward Israel when He declared, “I will not forget you!” (ISAIAH 49:15). Suffering in Babylon for idolatry and disobedience in days past, His people lamented, “The Lord has forgotten me” (V. 14). But God’s love for His people hadn’t changed. He promised them forgiveness and restoration (VV. 8–13).

“I have engraved you on the palms of my hands,” God told Israel, as He also tells us today (V. 16). As I ponder His words of reassurance, it reminds me so deeply of Jesus’ nail-scarred hands— stretched out in love for us and for our salvation (JOHN 20:24–27). Like my grandfather’s stamps and his tender words, God holds out His forgiving hand as an eternal token of His love. Let’s thank Him for His love—an unchanging love. He will never forget us.

교회가 되기

데이브와 카알라는 코비드19 팬데믹 기간 동안, 섬길 교회를 몇 달이나 찾아보았지만 대면 접촉을 규제하는 보건수칙들 때문에 교회를 찾기가 더 힘들었습니다. 두 사람은 예수님을 믿는 사람들과 한 지체로 지내는 것을 진실로 원했습니다. 카알라가 내게 이메일로 “교회 찾는 게 너무 어려워.”라고 했을 때, 나에게도 우리 교회 가족들과 다시 만나고 싶은 마음이 생겼습니다. 나는 “지금은 교회가 제 구실 하기가 힘든 때야.” 라고 답장을 보냈습니다. 그 기간 동안 우리 교회는 이웃에게 음식을 제공하고, 온라인 예배를 드리고, 모든 교인에게 전화를 걸어 기도와 도움을 주는 일을 중점적으로 하면서 “중심을 잡았습니다.” 남편과 나도 그 사역에 동참했지만 이렇게 달라진 세상에서 “교회가 되려면” 다른 무엇을 더 해야 할지 고민이 되었습니다.

히브리서 저자는 10장 25절에서 “모이기를 폐하는 어떤 사람들의 습관과 같이 하지 말고 오직 권하여... 더욱 그리하자”고 당부합니다. 아마도 박해 때문에(32-34절), 혹은 단순히 활력을 잃어서(12:3) 힘들어하던 초기 그리스도인들은 교회의 역할을 다 하기 위해 어떤 새로운 자극이 필요했습니다.

오늘의 나에게도 그런 자극이 필요합니다. 당신은 어떻습니까? 상황에 따라 교회를 경험하는 방식이 변해가는 이때 우리가 계속 교회 다운 교회로 남아 있을 수 있을까요? 하나님이 이끄시는 대로 새롭고 창의적인 방법으로 서로를 격려하고 세워줍시다. 자원을 공유하고, 응원의 메시지를 보내며, 가능하면 자주 모이고, 서로를 위해 기도합시다. 우리가 함께 교회가 되어봅시다.

BE THE CHURCH

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dave and Carla spent months looking for a church home. Following health guidelines, which limited various in-person experiences, made it even more difficult. They longed for connection to a body of believers in Jesus. “It’s a hard time to find a church,” Carla emailed me. Within me rose a realization from my own longing to be reunited with my church family. “It’s a hard time to be the church,” I responded. In that season, our church had “pivoted,” offering food in surrounding neighborhoods, creating online services, and phoning every member with support and prayer. My husband and I participated and yet wondered what else we could do to “be the church” in our changed world.

In Hebrews 10:25, the writer exhorts readers not to neglect “meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but [encourage] one another.” Perhaps due to persecution (VV. 32–34) or maybe as a result of simply growing weary (12:3), the struggling early believers needed a nudge to keep being the church.

And today, I need a nudge too. Do you? When circumstances change how we experience church, will we continue to be the church? Let’s creatively encourage one another and build each other up as God guides us. Share our resources. Send a text of support. Gather as we’re able. Pray for one another. Let’s be the church.

편견과 하나님의 사랑

“너는 내가 생각했던 것과는 달라. 너를 미워할 것 같았는데 밉지가 않아.” 이렇게 말하는 젊은 학생이 당돌하게 느껴질 수도 있었지만, 사실은 내게 좋은 뜻으로 한 말이었습니다. 나는 수십 년 전 우리 나라와 전쟁을 했던 그의 나라에서 유학하고 있었습니다. 우리는 같은 수업을 들으며 그룹 토의에 참여하고 있었는데 그가 나와 거리를 두는 것 같았습니다. 혹시 내가 그에게 실수한 게 있느냐고 묻자 그는 이렇게 대답했습니다. “전혀 아니야... 사실은 우리 할아버지가 그 전쟁에서 돌아가셔서 네 나라와 사람들을 미워했는데, 지금 보니 놀랍게도 우리에게 공통점이 너무 많아. 우린 얼마든지 친구가 될 수 있을 것 같아.”

편견은 인류 역사만큼이나 오래 있어왔습니다. 2천 년 전 나다나엘은 나사렛에 사는 예수님에 대해 처음 듣고는, “나사렛에서 무슨 선한 것이 날 수 있느냐” 하며 자신의 편견을 그대로 드러냈습니다(요한복음 1:46). 나다나엘도 예수님처럼 갈릴리 지방에 살고 있었습니다. 그러나 다른 갈릴리 사람들도 변두리 작은 마을이라는 이유로 나사렛을 무시하고 있었기 때문에, 그는 아마 하나님께서 보내시는 메시아는 다른 곳에서 오실 거라고 생각했던 것 같습니다.

그러나 분명한 사실은 예수님은 나다나엘의 이런 반응과 상관없이 그를 사랑하셨으며, 나다나엘은 변화되어 예수님의 제자가 되었다는 것입니다. 나다나엘은 나중에 “당신은 하나님의 아들이십니다”라고 선언했습니다(49 절). 어떤 편견도 새롭게 변화시키시는 하나님의 사랑을 막을 수 없습니다.

PREJUDICE AND GOD’S LOVE

“You’re not what I expected. I thought I’d hate you, but I don’t.” The young man’s words seemed harsh, but they were actually an effort to be kind. I was studying abroad in his country, a land that decades earlier had been at war with my own. We were participating in a group discussion in class together, and I noticed he seemed distant. When I asked if I’d offended him somehow, he responded, “Not at all . . . . And that’s the thing. My grandfather was killed in that war, and I hated your people and your country for it. But now I see how much we have in common, and that surprises me. I don’t see why we can’t be friends.”

Prejudice is as old as the human race. Two millennia ago, when Nathanael first heard about Jesus living in Nazareth, his bias was evident: “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” he asked (JOHN 1:46). Nathanael lived in the region of Galilee, like Jesus. He probably thought God’s Messiah would come from another place; even other Galileans looked down on Nazareth because it seemed to be an unremarkable little village.

This much is clear. Nathanael’s response didn’t stop Jesus from loving him, and he was transformed as he became Jesus’ disciple. “You are the Son of God!” Nathanael later declared (V. 49). There is no bias that can stand against God’s transforming love.

그리스도처럼 나누기

널리 사랑받고 있는 1905년의 성탄절 이야기 “동방박사의 선물”을 쓴 미국 작가 오 헨리는 당시에 개인적인 고충으로부터 벗어나기 위해 힘들어하던 중이었습니다. 그럼에도 그는 그리스도를 닮은 성품, ‘희생’이라는 아름다운 주제를 밝히 드러내는 감동적인 이야기를 썼습니다. 이야기에서 가난한 아내는 남편에게 선물할 금 시계줄을 사기 위해 크리스마스 이브에 자신의 아름다운 긴 머리를 잘라 팔았습니다. 그러나 남편이 아내의 아름다운 머리를 위해 빗 한 세트를 사려고 주머니 시계를 판 것을 나중에 알게 됩니다.

이들이 서로에게 준 가장 큰 선물, 그것은 희생이었습니다. 두 사람이 각자 서로에게 행동으로 보여준 큰 사랑이었습니다.

그런 면에서 이 이야기는 동방박사들이 그리스도의 거룩한 탄생 후 아기 예수께 드린 사랑의 선물들을 의미하기도 합니다(마태복음 2:1, 11 참조). 그러나 그것들보다 더 큰 선물은 아기 예수가 자라서 나중에 온 세상을 위해 자신의 생명을 내어준 것입니다.

믿는 자들이 생활 속에서 그리스도의 큰 선물을 더욱 빛나게 하는 방법은 다른 사람들에게 시간과 물질과 마음으로 사랑을 표현하는 것입니다. 바울 사도는 “형제들아 내가 하나님의 모든 자비하심으로 너희를 권하노니 너희 몸을 하나님이 기뻐하시는 거룩한 산 제물로 드리라”(로마서 12:1)고 했습니다. 예수님의 사랑으로 다른 사람들을 위해 희생하는 것보다 더 좋은 선물은 없습니다.

GIVING LIKE CHRIST

When American author O. Henry wrote his beloved 1905 Christmas story “The Gift of the Magi,” he was struggling to rebound from personal troubles. Still, he penned an inspiring story that highlights a beautiful, Christlike character trait—sacrifice. In the story, an impoverished wife sells her beautiful long hair on Christmas Eve to buy a gold pocket watch chain for her husband. As she learns later, however, her husband had sold his pocket watch to buy a set of combs for her beautiful hair.

Their greatest gift to each other? Sacrifice. From each, the gesture showed great love.

In that way, the story represents the loving gifts the magi (wise men) gave to the Christ child after His holy birth (SEE MATTHEW 2:1, 11). More than those gifts, however, the Child Jesus would grow up and one day give His life for the whole world.

In our daily lives, believers in Christ can highlight His great gift by offering to others the sacrifice of our time, treasures, and a temperament that all speak of love. As the apostle Paul wrote, “I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God” (ROMANS 12:1). There’s no better gift than sacrificing for others through Jesus’ love.

성자 닉

우리가 성 니콜라스(성자 닉)로 알고 있는 이 사람은 서기 270년 무렵 고대 그리스의 부유한 가정에서 태어났습니다. 어려서 부모를 잃는 슬픔을 겪은 그는 삼촌과 살면서 그의 사랑을 받으며 하나님을 따라 사는 믿음을 배웠습니다. 전해오는 말에 의하면 니콜라스가 젊었을 때 결혼 지참금도 없고 곧 극빈자 신세가 될 세 자매의 이야기를 들었다고 합니다. 그는 도움이 필요한 사람에게 베풀라는 예수님의 가르침대로 자기가 상속받은 재산에서 세 자매에게 금화 한 자루씩을 주었습니다. 그후 여러 해 동안 니콜라스는 가난한 사람들을 먹이고 사람들을 돌보는데 남은 돈을 썼습니다. 그리고 세기가 바뀌면서 니콜라스는 아낌없이 내어주었던 그의 행실로 영예를 얻게 되었고, 우리가 싼타클로스로 알고 있는 인물이 탄생하는 배경이 되었습니다.

성탄절 무렵의 들뜬 분위기와 광고들 때문에 성탄절의 의미가 퇴색되기도 하지만, 선물을 주는 전통은 니콜라스와 관련되어 있습니다. 그의 너그러움은 예수님께 헌신한 삶으로부터 나왔습니다. 니콜라스는 그리스도께서 상상도 못할 관대함으로 가장 심오한 선물, 곧 ‘하나님’을 선물로 주셨다는 것을 알았습니다. 예수라는 이름의 뜻은 “하나님이 우리와 함께 계시다”(마태복음 1:23)입니다. 그 예수님이 우리에게 생명을 선물로 주셨습니다. 예수님은 이 죽음의 세상에서 “자기 백성을 그들의 죄에서 구원하십니다”(21절).

예수님을 믿을 때 우리는 자신을 내어주는 관대함을 보일 수 있습니다. 다른 사람들의 필요를 돌보고 하나님께서 우리를 채워 주시는 것처럼 우리도 기쁜 마음으로 그들을 채워줍니다. 이런 것이 성자 닉의 이야기이지만, 더 나아가 이것은 하나님의 이야기입니다.

SAINT NICK

The person we know as Saint Nicholas (Saint Nick) was born around ad 270 to a wealthy Grecian family. Tragically, his parents died when he was a boy, and he lived with his uncle who loved him and taught him to follow God. When Nicholas was a young man, legend says that he heard of three sisters who didn’t have a dowry for marriage and would soon be destitute. Wanting to follow Jesus’ teaching about giving to those in need, he took his inheritance and gave each sister a bag of gold coins. Over the years, Nicholas gave the rest of his money away feeding the poor and caring for others. In the following centuries, Nicholas was honored for his lavish generosity, and he inspired the character we know as Santa Claus.

While the glitz and advertising of the season may threaten our celebrations, the gift-giving tradition connects to Nicholas. And his generosity was based on his devotion to Jesus. Nicholas knew that Christ enacted unimagined generosity, bringing the most profound gift: God. Jesus is “God with us” (MATTHEW 1:23). And He brought us the gift of life. In a world of death, He “save[s] his people from their sins” (V. 21)

When we believe in Jesus, sacrificial generosity unfolds. We tend to others’ needs, and we joyfully provide for them as God provides for us. This is Saint Nick’s story; but far more, this is God’s story.

위로가 되는 하나님의 언약

여러 해 전 우리 가족은 미국에서 네 개의 주가 한 곳에서 만나는 유일한 장소인 포코너스(네 모퉁이)에 가보았습니다. 남편은 아리조나주로 표시된 쪽에 섰고, 큰 아들 에이 제이는 유타주로 건너갔습니다. 작은 아들 제비어는 내 손을 잡고 콜로라도주에 함께 발을 디뎠습니다. 내가 뉴멕시코주로 건너가자 제비어는 “엄마가 날 콜로라도에 버려두고 가다니!” 라고 소리쳤습니다. 우리는 함께 있었지만 동시에 네 개의 다른 주에서 들려오는 웃음 소리를 들었습니다. 장성한 아들들이 집을 떠난 지금, 나는 그들이 어디에 있든지 하나님께서 그의 ‘모든’ 백성들 가까이 계시겠다고 하신 그분의 약속에 더 깊이 감사하고 있습니다.

모세가 죽은 뒤 하나님은 여호수아를 지도자로 부르시면서 이스라엘 영토를 넓힐 때(여호수아 1:1-4) 항상 함께 하겠다고 약속하셨습니다. 하나님은 “모세와 함께 있었던 것 같이 너와 함께 있을 것임이니라 내가 너를 떠나지 아니하며 버리지 아니하리라”(5절)고 말씀하셨습니다. 새로 하나님의 백성을 이끌 지도자가 된 여호수아가 의심과 두려움으로 씨름할 것을 아신 하나님은 이렇게 말씀하시며 소망을 갖게 하셨습니다. “내가 네게 명령한 것이 아니냐 강하고 담대하라 두려워하지 말며 놀라지 말라 네가 어디로 가든지 네 하나님 여호와가 너와 함께 하느니라”(9절).

하나님이 우리와 우리가 사랑하는 사람들을 어디로 인도하시든지, 그리고 아무리 어려운 때라도 가장 큰 위로를 주는 하나님의 이 언약이 하나님이 우리와 ‘언제나’ 함께 하신다는 사실을 확인시켜 줍니다.

GOD’S COMFORTING COMMITMENT

Years ago, our family visited Four Corners, the only place in the United States where four states meet at one location. My husband stood in the section marked Arizona. Our oldest son, A.J., hopped into Utah. Our youngest son, Xavier, held my hand as we stepped into Colorado. When I scooted into New Mexico, Xavier said, “Mom, I can’t believe you left me in Colorado!” We were together and apart as our laughter was heard in four different states. Now that our grown sons have left home, I have a deeper appreciation of God’s promise to be near all His people wherever they go.

After Moses died, God called Joshua into leadership and guaranteed His presence as He expanded the Israelite’s territory (JOSHUA 1:1–4). God said, “As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you” (V. 5). Knowing that Joshua would struggle with doubt and fear as the new leader of His people, God built a foundation of hope on these words: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” (V. 9).

No matter where God leads us or our loved ones, even through difficult times, His most comforting commitment assures us that He’s always present.

어두움과 하나님의 빛

일레인이 자신의 암이 많이 진행됐다는 진단을 받자, 그녀와 남편 척은 일레인이 예수님 곁으로 갈 날이 얼마 남지 않은 것을 알았습니다. 두 사람은 하나님이 늘 함께 계실 것이라 약속하신 시편 23편의 말씀을 붙잡고 54년을 함께 살아오면서 삶의 깊고 험한 골짜기들을 건너왔습니다. 그들은 일레인이 수십 년 동안 믿어 온 예수님을 이제 곧 만나게 된다는 사실에 소망을 가졌습니다.

아내의 장례식에서 남편 척은 자신이 ‘여전히’ “사망의 음침한 골짜기를” (시편 23:4) 지나고 있음을 고백했습니다. 아내는 이미 천국에서의 삶을 시작 했지만, 일레인을 깊이 사랑했던 남편과 다른 이들에게는 여전히 “사망의 음침함”이 있었습니다.

우리가 어둠의 골짜기를 지날 때 빛의 근원을 어디서 찾을 수 있을까요? 요한 사도는 “하나님은 빛이시라 그에게는 어둠이 조금도 없으시다”(요한1 서 1:5)고 말합니다. 그리고 예수님은 요한복음 8장 12절에서 “나는 세상의 빛이니 나를 따르는 자는 어둠에 다니지 아니하고 생명의 빛을 얻으리라”고 말씀하셨습니다.

예수님을 믿는 우리는 “주의 얼굴 빛 안에서 다닙니다”(시편 89:15). 우리 하나님은 우리가 가장 어두운 곳을 지날 때에도 우리와 함께 계시며 우리의 빛의 근원이 되어 주시겠다고 약속하셨습니다.

SHADOW AND GOD’S LIGHT

When Elaine was diagnosed with advanced cancer, she and her husband, Chuck, knew it wouldn’t be long until she’d be with Jesus. Both of them treasured the promise of Psalm 23 that God would be with them as they journeyed through the deepest and most difficult valley of their fifty-four years together. They took hope in the fact that Elaine was ready to meet Jesus, having placed her faith in Him decades before.

At his wife’s memorial service, Chuck shared that he was still traveling “through the valley of the shadow of death” (PSALM 23:4 NKJV). His wife’s life in heaven had already begun. But the “shadow of death” was still with him and with others who’d greatly loved Elaine.

As we travel through the valley of shadows, where can we find our source of light? The apostle John declares that “God is light; in him there is no darkness at all” (1 JOHN 1:5). And in John 8:12, Jesus proclaimed: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

As believers in Jesus, we “walk in the light of [His] presence” (PSALM 89:15). Our God has promised to be with us and to be our source of light even when we travel through the darkest of shadows.

예수님께 내려놓기

1951년 조셉 스탈린의 주치의가 그에게 건강을 지키려면 일을 줄여야 한다고 소견을 말했습니다. 그러자 이 소련의 통치자는 의사를 간첩죄로 고발하여 잡아가게 했습니다. 거짓으로 많은 사람들을 억압하며 진실을 따라 살 수 없었던 이 폭군은 수많은 사람에게 한 것처럼 그에게 진실을 말해준 의사도 제거해 버렸습니다. 하지만 그럼에도 진실이 승리했습니다. 1953년 스탈린이 죽은 것입니다.

무서운 예언을 했다고 잡혀서 수감되었던 예레미야 선지자는(예레미야 38:1-6; 40:1) 예루살렘에 정확히 어떤 일들이 일어날 것인지 유다 왕에게 말했습니다. 그는 시드기야 왕에게 “내가 왕에게 아뢴 바 여호와의 목소리에 순종하소서”라고 말했습니다(38:20). 성을 포위한 군대에 항복하지 않으면 상황이 더욱 악화될 뿐이었습니다. 예레미야는 경고했습니다. “네 아내들과 자녀는 갈대아인에게로 끌려가겠고 너는 그들의 손에서 벗어나지 못하리라”(23 절).

시드기야는 그 진실에 대응하여 행하지 않았습니다. 결국 바벨론 사람들은 왕을 사로잡고 그의 아들들을 모두 죽이고 도시를 불태웠습니다(39장).

어떤 의미에서 사람들에게는 모두 시드기야가 가졌던 딜레마가 있습니다. 우리는 자신의 죄와 잘못된 선택이라는 삶의 벽 안에 갇혀 있습니다. 우리도 우리 자신에 대해 진실을 말해주는 사람들을 피하고 상황을 더 나쁘게 만들 때가 많이 있습니다. 우리가 할 일은 “내가 곧 길이요 진리요 생명이니 나로 말미암지 않고는 아버지께로 올 자가 없느니라”(요한복음 14:6)고 하신 예수님의 뜻에 우리 자신을 내려놓는 것입니다.

SURRENDERING TO JESUS

In 1951, Joseph Stalin’s doctor advised him to reduce his workload in order to preserve his health. The ruler of the Soviet Union accused the physician of spying and had him arrested. The tyrant who had oppressed so many with lies couldn’t abide the truth, and—as he had done so many times—he removed the one who told him the facts. Truth won anyway. Stalin died in 1953.

The prophet Jeremiah, arrested for his dire prophecies and kept in chains (JEREMIAH 38:1–6; 40:1), told the king of Judah exactly what would happen to Jerusalem. “Obey the Lord by doing what I tell you,” he said to King Zedekiah (38:20). Failure to surrender to the army surrounding the city would only make matters worse. “All your wives and children will be brought out to the Babylonians,” Jeremiah warned. “You yourself will not escape from their hands” (V. 23).

Zedekiah failed to act on that truth. Eventually the Babylonians caught the king, killed all his sons, and burned the city (CH. 39).

In a sense, every human being faces Zedekiah’s dilemma. We’re trapped inside the walls of our own lives of sin and poor choices. Often, we make things worse by avoiding those who tell us the truth about ourselves. All we need to do is surrender to the will of the One who said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (JOHN 14:6).
