슬픈 이야기

오랫동안 감춰져 왔던 악행, 곧 여성을 권력으로 지배하는 남성들이 많은 여성들을 성적으로 학대한 사실이 드러나 가슴을 아프게 하고 있습니다. 헤드라인 뉴스들을 계속 보다가 내가 존경하는 두 사람이 그런 학대를 했다는 증거를 듣고 가슴이 무너졌습니다. 교회도 이런 문제에서 예외가 아니었습니다.

다윗 왕도 자신의 잘못에 대한 심판을 받게 되었습니다. 어느 날 오후 다윗이 “어떤 여자가 목욕하는 광경을 보게 되었다”(사무엘하 11:2, 현대인의 성경) 고 사무엘은 말합니다. 그리고 다윗은 그녀가 탐났습니다. 밧세바가 다윗의 충직한 부하 군인(우리아)의 아내였음에도 그는 아랑곳하지 않고 그녀를 취했습니다. 밧세바가 임신한 사실을 다윗에게 알리자 다윗은 크게 당황했습니다. 그래서 다윗은 비열한 계략을 꾸며 요압으로 하여금 우리아를 전장에서 죽게 만들었습니다.

다윗이 밧세바와 우리아에게 권력을 남용한 사실은 숨길 수가 없습니다. 사무엘은 그 사건을 우리에게 적나라하게 모두 보여주고 있습니다. 우리는 자신이 행한 악을 스스로 감당해야 합니다.

이 이야기는 우리 시대의 권력 남용에 대해서도 경고하고 있기 때문에 잘 새겨들어야 합니다. 다윗은 “[하나님의] 마음에 맞는 사람”(사도행전 13:22)이었지만 자신이 한 행동에 책임을 져야 하는 한 인간이기도 했습니다. 우리 또한 지도자들이 권력을 잘 사용하는지 혹은 남용하는지 기도하는 마음으로 책임을 물을 수 있기를 바랍니다.

하나님의 은혜로 속죄가 가능합니다. 계속 더 읽어가면 다윗이 깊이 뉘우치는 것을 보게 됩니다(사무엘하 12:13). 감사하게도 딱딱하게 굳은 마음도 여전히 죽음에서 생명으로 돌아설 수 있습니다.

A Sad Story

Painfully, the evil that has long been swept under the rug—sexual abuse of many women by men who had power over them—has come to light. Enduring headline after headline, my heart sank when I heard proof of abuse by two men I admired. The church has not been immune to these issues.

King David faced his own reckoning. Samuel tells us that one afternoon, David “saw a woman bathing” (2 SAMUEL 11:2). And David wanted her. Though Bathsheba was the wife of one his loyal soldiers (Uriah), David took her anyway. When Bathsheba told David she was pregnant, he panicked. And in a despicable act of treachery, David arranged for Joab to have Uriah die on the battlefield.

There is no hiding David’s abuse of power against Bathsheba and Uriah. Here it is in full color, Samuel ensuring we see it. We must deal with our evil.

Also, we must hear these stories because they caution us against the abuse of power in our times. This was David, “a man after [God’s] own heart” (ACTS 13:22), but also a man who needed to be held accountable for his actions. May we also prayerfully hold leaders accountable for how they use or abuse power.

By God’s grace, redemption is possible. If we read further, we encounter David’s profound repentance (2 SAMUEL 12:13).

링컨의 호주머니

1865년 아브라함 링컨 미국 대통령이 포드 극장에서 피격된 그날 밤, 대통령의 호주머니에는 다음과 같은 것들이 들어있었습니다. 안경, 렌즈 닦이, 주머니칼, 줄 달린 시계, 손수건, 5달러짜리 남부 연맹 지폐가 들어있는 가죽 지갑, 그리고 대통령 자신과 자신의 정책을 지지하는 기사를 포함해 신문기사 오린 것 여덟 개.

남부 연방의 돈이 왜 대통령의 호주머니에 들어있었는지 궁금하기는 하지만, 그를 적극 지지하는 내용의 신문기사가 들어있던 것에 대해서는 이유를 잘 알 것 같습니다. 격려의 말은 누구에게나 필요하기 때문입니다. 심지어 링컨 같은 위대한 지도자에게도 말입니다! 그 운명의 연극이 시작되기 전, 그 짧은 시간에 어쩌면 자기 부인에게 그 신문기사를 읽어주는 대통령의 모습을 상상해볼 수 있지 않을까요?

누구에게 격려가 필요한지 아십니까? ‘모든 사람’입니다! 주위를 둘러보십시오. 눈에 보이는 사람들 중 겉으로 보이는 자신감만큼 실제로 자신 있는 사람은 하나도 없습니다. 우리는 모두 한 가지로 실패하고, 말로 헐뜯으며, 자기 불신 속에 만사가 잘 안 풀리는 날을 살아가는 사람들입니다.

우리 모두가 “이웃을 기쁘게 하되 선을 이루고 덕을 세우도록 할지니라”(로마서 15:2)고 하신 하나님의 명령에 순종한다면 어떨까요? “마음에 달고 뼈에 양약”이 되는 “선한 말”만 하기로 결심한다면 어떨까요?(잠언 16:24). 그리고 우리가 그 말들을 글로 남겨 친구들이 다시 읽고 음미할 수 있게 된다면 어떨까요? 그러면 우리는 모두 호주머니(또는 전화기) 속에 그 말들을 지니고 다니게 될 것이고, “자기를 기쁘게 하지 아니하시고” 다른 사람을 위해 사셨던 예수님을 더 닮아가게 될 것입니다(로마서 15:3).

Lincoln’s Pockets

The night US president Abraham Lincoln was shot at Ford’s Theater in 1865, his pockets contained the following: two spectacles, a lens polisher, a pocketknife, a watch fob, a handkerchief, a leather wallet containing a five-dollar Confederate bill, and eight newspaper clippings, including several that praised him and his policies.

I wonder what the Confederate money was doing in the president’s pocket, but I have little doubt about the glowing news stories. Everyone needs encouragement, even a great leader like Lincoln! Can you see him, in the moments before the fateful play, perhaps reading them to his wife?

Who do you know who needs encouragement? Everyone ! Look around you. There isn’t one person in your line of vision who is as confident as they seem. We’re all one failure, snide comment, or bad hair day away from self-doubt.

What if we all obeyed God’s command to “please our neighbors for their good, to build them up”? (ROMANS 15:2). What if we determined only to speak “gracious words” that are “sweet to the soul and healing to the bones”? (PROVERBS 16:24). What if we wrote these words down, so friends could reread and savor them? Then we’d all have notes in our pockets (or on our phones!). And we’d be more like Jesus, who “did not please himself” but lived for others (ROMANS 15:3). - MIKE WITTMER

통제의 환상

1975년에 발표된 엘렌 랭어의 ‘통제의 환상’이라는 제목의 연구는 삶 속에서 일어나는 일들에 우리가 얼마나 영향력을 행사할 수 있는가에 관해 조사한 것입니다. 그 연구에서 랭어는 대부분의 경우 우리들이 자신의 통제가 가능한 범위를 과대평가한다는 것을 발견했습니다. 그 연구는 또한 우리의 이런 환상이 현실에 부닥칠 때 어떻게 거의 예외 없이 깨어지는지도 설명하였습니다.

랭어의 결론은 연구논문이 발표된 이후 다른 사람들의 실험에 의해서 뒷받침되었습니다. 그러나 야고보는 랭어가 이 현상을 밝혀내기 훨씬 전에 그것을 밝혀냈습니다. 야고보서 4장에서 그는 이렇게 기록합니다. “들으라 너희 중에 말하기를 오늘이나 내일이나 우리가 어떤 도시에 가서 거기서 일 년을 머물며 장사하여 이익을 보리라 하는 자들아 내일 일을 너희가 알지 못하는도다 너희 생명이 무엇이냐 너희는 잠깐 보이다가 없어지는 안개니라”(13-14절).

우리의 운명이 우리 자신의 손에 달려있지 않다는 것을 알기를 바랍니다. 하나님께서 모든 것을 그분의 능력의 손으로 붙잡고 계시기에 우리가 그분의 계획을 믿을 수 있는 것입니다!

The Illusion of Control

Ellen Langer’s 1975 study titled The Illusion of Control examined the level of influence we exert over life’s events. She found that we overestimate our degree of control in most situations. The study also demonstrated how reality nearly always shatters our illusion.

Langer’s conclusions are supported by experiments carried out by others since the study was published. However, James identified the phenomenon long before she named it. In James 4, he wrote, “Now listen, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.’ Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes” (VV 13–14).

Then James provides a cure for the delusion, pointing to the One who’s in absolute control: “Instead, you ought to say, ‘If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that’” (V 15). In these few verses, James summarized both a key failing of the human condition and its antidote.

May we understand that our fate doesn’t rest in our own hands. Because God holds all things in His capable hands, we can trust His plans! - REMI OYEDELE

변장하신 예수님

아들 제프가 얼마 전 “노숙자 체험”에 참여했습니다. 제프는 2 박 3일 동안 자신이 사는 도시에서 영하의 날씨 속에 밖에서 잠을 자며 길거리에서 지냈습니다. 먹을 것도, 돈도, 숙소도
없이 기본적으로 필요한 것들을 모르는 사람들의 친절에 의지했습니다. 하루는 먹을 것이라고는 샌드위치 하나밖에 없었는데, 그것도 제프가 패스트푸드 식당에서 오래된 빵이라도 달라고 하는 소리를 어떤 사람이 듣고 사준 것이었습니다.

얼마 후 제프는 나에게 그 생활이 자기가 해본 가장 힘든 일 중의 하나이긴 했지만 그 경험으로 다른 사람들을 보는 시각이 상당히 달라졌다고 말했습니다. 제프는 “노숙자 체험”을 한 그 다음 날, 길거리 생활을 할 때 그를 친절히 대해준 노숙자들을 찾아 간단하게 도울 수 있는 일들을 하면서 하루를 보냈습니다. 제프가 실제로 노숙자가 아니라는 것을 알고 놀란 노숙자들은 제프가 노숙자의 눈으로 인생을 보려고 애쓸 만큼 관심을 가져준데 대해 고마워했습니다.

아들의 경험은 예수님의 말씀을 떠오르게 합니다. “헐벗었을 때에 옷을 입혔고 병들었을 때에 돌보았고 옥에 갇혔을 때에 와서 보았느니라...... 너희가 여기 내 형제 중에 지극히 작은 자 하나에게 한 것이 곧 내게 한 것이니라”(마태복음 25:36, 40). 한 마디 격려의 말이든 약간의 먹을 것이든, 하나님은 우리에게 다른 사람들의 필요를 채우는 일에 사랑의 마음으로 참여하라고 하십니다. 사람들에게 친절한 것이 하나님께 친절한 것입니다.

Jesus in Disguise

My son Geoff recently participated in a “homeless simulation.” He spent three days and two nights living on the streets of his city, sleeping outside in below freezing temperatures. Without food, money, or shelter, he relied on the kindness of strangers for his basic needs. On one of those days his only food was a sandwich, bought by a man who heard him asking for stale bread at a fast-food restaurant.

Geoff told me later it was one of the hardest things he’d ever done, yet it profoundly impacted his outlook on others. He spent the day after his “simulation” seeking out homeless people who had been kind to him during his time on the street, doing what he could to assist them in simple ways. They were surprised to discover he wasn’t actually homeless and were grateful he cared enough to try to see life through their eyes.

My son’s experience calls to mind Jesus’s words: “I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me. . . . Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (MATTHEW 25:36, 40). Whether we give a word of encouragement or a bag of groceries, God calls us to lovingly attend to the needs of others. Our kindness to others is kindness to Him. - JAMES BANKS

하나님의 창조 능력을 찬양하라

교회 강당에 음악이 울러 퍼지는 가운데 색맹 화가인 랜스 브라운이 무대 위에 올라갔습니다. 그는 청중을 뒤로한 채 커다란 흰색 캔버스 앞에 서서 검은색 물감에 붓을 담갔습니다. 그리고 부드럽게 몇 획을 긋더니 십자가를 완성했습니다. 이 비주얼 이야기 작가는 붓과 손으로 한 획 한 획을 그으면서 예수님의 십자가 처형과 부활의 형상을 만들어냈습니다. 화가는 널찍한 캔버스 공간을 검은색 물감으로 덮어버리고는 하늘색 물감과 흰색 물감을 덧칠하더니 6분도 채 안 되어 추상화 한 점을 완성했습니다. 그리고 캔버스를 들어 올려 거꾸로 뒤집어서 감춰져 있던 형상을 보여주었습니다. 그것은 불쌍히 여기는 마음으로 가득 찬 얼굴, 곧 예수님의 형상이었습니다.

브라운은 한 친구가 예배 중에 스피드 페인트(한정된 시간 안에 빨리 그리는 화법: 역주)를 하지 않겠냐고 제안했을 때 꺼려했었다고 말했습니다. 그러나 지금은 세계를 돌아다니며 그림으로 그리스도를 전하면서 사람들을 예배로 인도하고 있습니다.

바울 사도는 하나님이 그분의 백성들에게 두루 나누어주신 다양한 은사의 가치와 목적을 강조하여 말합니다. 하나님의 가족 구성원 모두는 각자 주님을 영화롭게 하고 다른 사람들을 사랑으로 세워줄 수 있도록 준비되어 있습니다(로마서 12:3-5). 바울은 우리의 은사가 무엇인지를 잘 알고 사용하여 부지런히 그리고 즐거운 마음으로 섬김으로써 다른 사람들의 품성을 높여주고 또 예수님을 증언하라고 독려하고 있습니다(6-8절).

하나님은 우리가 보이지 않는 곳에서든 제일 앞에 나서서든 마음을 다해 섬길 수 있도록 우리 각자에게 영적인 은사와 재능, 기술, 경험들을 부여해주셨습니다. 우리가 하나님의 창조 능력을
찬양할 때 하나님은 우리의 독특한 재능을 사용하셔서 복음을 전파하시고 다른 믿는 자들을 사랑으로 세워주십니다.

Celebrating God’s Creativity

As music filled the church auditorium, colorblind artist Lance Brown stepped onstage. He stood in front of a large white canvas, with his back to the congregation and dipped his brush into black paint. With smooth swipes, he completed a cross. Stroke after stroke with brushes and his hands, this visual storyteller created images of Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection. He covered the large patches of the canvas with black paint and added blue and white to finish a now abstract painting in less than six minutes. He picked up the canvas, turned it upside down, and revealed a hidden image—a compassion-filled face—Jesus.

Brown said he’d been reluctant when a friend suggested he speed-paint during a church service. Yet he now travels internationally to lead people into worship as he paints and shares Christ with others.

The apostle Paul affirms the value and purpose of the diverse gifts God has dispersed to His people. Every member of His family is equipped to glorify the Lord and build others up
in love (ROMANS 12:3–5). Paul encourages us to identify and use our gifts to edify others and point to Jesus, serving diligently and cheerfully (VV 6–8).

God has given each of us spiritual gifts, talents, skills, and experiences to serve wholeheartedly behind the scenes or in the forefront. As we celebrate His creativity, He uses our uniqueness to spread the gospel and build up other believers in love. - XOCHITL DIXON

“비록 그럴지라도”

2017년 미국에서 허리케인 하비가 지나간 후 우리는 그곳 사람들을 도울 기회가 있어서 그룹을 이루어 휴스턴으로 갔습니다. 우리의 목표는 태풍으로 피해를 입은 사람들을 격려해주는 것이었습니다. 그 과정 중에, 파손된 교회 건물과 가옥 안에서 그 사람들과 함께 하면서 우리 자신의 믿음이 도전 받고 더 견고해졌습니다.

허리케인 하비를 계기로 많은 사람 들이 보여준 빛나는 믿음은 하박국이 기원전 7세기에 예언한 내용의 마지막 부분에 표현되어 있는 것과 같습니다. 선지자는 상황이 나아지기 전에 더 악화될 것이라 하면서 고난의 시기가 다가오고 있음을 예언했습니다(1:5-2:1). 예언 마지막 부분을 보면 그가 이 땅에 있을 법한 손실들을 곰곰이 생각하면서 ‘비록 그럴지라도’라는 말을 세 번 사용하는 것을 볼 수 있습니다. “비록 무화과나무가 무성하지 못[할지라도]......[비록] 감람나무에 소출이 없[을지라도]......[비록] 우리에 양이 없으며 외양간에 소가 없을지라도”(3:17).

건강이나 일자리를 잃거나, 사랑하는 사람이 죽거나, 처참한 자연재해를 당하는 것과 같은 상상할 수 없는 손실에 직면했을 때 우리는 어떻게 처신합니까? 하박국은 “어려운 시기를 위한 시”에서 어제와 오늘 그리고 영원토록 구원(18절)과 힘과 안정 (19절)의 근원 되시는 하나님을 확실히 믿고 신뢰할 것을 요구하고 있습니다. 결국에는, 하나님을 신뢰하는 사람들은 결코 낙담하지 않게 될 것입니다.

“Though”

In 2017, the opportunity to help people in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey in the US prompted a group of us to travel to Houston. Our goal was to encourage people who’d been impacted by the storm. In the process, our own faith was challenged and strengthened as we stood with them in their damaged church buildings and homes.

The radiant faith exhibited by a number of these people in the wake of Harvey is what we see expressed by Habakkuk at the end of his seventh-century bc prophecy. The prophet predicted that tough times were on the way (1:5–2:1); things would get worse before they got better. The end of the prophecy finds him pondering the potential of earthly losses and the word though makes a threefold appearance: “Though the fig tree does not bud . . . ; though the olive crop fails . . . ; though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls” (3:17).

How do we position ourselves in the face of unimaginable losses such as the loss of health or employment, the death of a loved one, or a devastating natural disaster? Habakkuk’s “Ode for Tough Times” calls us to confident faith and trust in God, who is the source of salvation (V 18), strength, and stability (V 19) for yesterday, today, and forever. In the end, those who trust Him will never be disappointed. - ARTHUR JACKSON

격려의 힘

벤자민 웨스트가 어렸을 때 자기 여동생의 모습을 그렸는데 그림이 아주 엉망이었습니다. 그런데 어머니가 그 그림을 보고는 아이의 머리에 입을 맞추면서, “어쩜, 이거 샐리구나!” 라고 말했습니다. 벤자민은 나중에 자신이 화가가, 그것도 미국의 위대한 화가가 될 수 있었던 것은 바로 그 어머니의 입맞춤 때문이라고 말하곤 했습니다. 격려란 정말 강력한 것입니다!

그림을 배우는 아이처럼 바울도 사 역 초기에는 별 로 신뢰를 얻지 못했습니다. 그러나 바나바가 그의 소명을 확인시켜주었고, 교회가 사울을 믿음의 동역자로 받아들인 것도 바나바의 격려 때문이었습니다(사도행전 9:27). 바나바는 또 새로 생긴 안디옥 교회를 격려하여 사도행전에서 가장 영향력 있는 교회가 되도록 도왔습니다(11:22-23). 그리고 예루살렘 교회가 이방인 신자들을 그리스도인으로 받아들이게 된 것도 바울의 격려와 함께 바나바의 격려가 있었기 때문이었습니다 (15:19). 따라서 초대교회에 관한 이야기는 여러 면에서 볼 때 사실 격려의 이야기입니다.

이것은 우리 자신의 삶에도 똑같이 적용되어야 합니다. 우리는 격려를 그저 누군가에게 좋은 말을 해주는 것으로만 생각할지 모릅니다. 그러나 그렇다면 격려에 들어있는 지속적인 힘을 알지 못하는 것입니다. 격려는 교회의 생명력뿐 아니라 우리 각자의 삶을 빚어 가시는 하나님의 방법 중 하나입니다.

우리에게 격려 받는 순간들을 허락하신 하나님께 감사하고 그 받은 것을 다른 사람들에게 전하도록 힘씁시다.

The Power of Encouragement

When he was a young boy, Benjamin West attempted to draw a picture of his sister, but he succeeded only in making a mess. His mother saw his creation, kissed him on the head, and remarked, “Why, it’s Sally!” He would later say that it was that kiss that made him an artist—and the great American painter he would become. Encouragement is a powerful thing!

Like a child learning to paint, Paul didn’t have much credibility early on in his ministry, but Barnabas affirmed his calling. It was through Barnabas’s encouragement that the church accepted Saul as a fellow believer (ACTS 9:27). Barnabas would also encourage the fledgling church of Antioch, helping it to become one of the most influential in the book of Acts (11:22–23). And it was through Barnabas’s encouragement, as well as Paul’s, that the Jerusalem church embraced the gentile believers as Christians (15:19). So, in many ways, the story of the early church is really a story of encouragement.

The same should apply to our own lives. We might think encouragement is merely saying something nice to someone. But if we think that way, we fail to recognize the lasting power it possesses. It’s one of the means by which God shapes our individual lives as well as the life of the church.

무너질 수 없는 사랑

우리 집 뒷마당에 있는 개울을 처음 보았을 때 그것은 몹시 더운 여름날 바위들 틈새에서 조금씩 새어나오는 가느다란 물줄기에 불과했습니다. 무거운 나무 널빤지를 다리삼아 쉽게 건너다닐 수도 있었습니다. 그로부터 몇 달 후, 우리 지역에 억수같은 비가 여러 날 계속 퍼부어댔습니다. 그러자 조용히 흐르던 개울에 물이 불어나 깊이 4피트 (약 1.2미터), 폭 10피트(약 3미터)의 빠른 물살의 강물이 되어버렸습니다! 강력한
물살이 널빤지 다리를 번쩍 들어 몇 피트 떨어진 곳에 던져놓았습니다.

세차게 흐르는 물은 그 앞에 놓인 것이 무엇이든 거의 휩쓸어버리는 힘이 있습니다. 그러나 홍수나 다른 파괴적인 힘과 마주쳐도 무너지지 않는 것이 있습니다. 그것은 ‘사랑’입니다. “많은 물도 이 사랑을 끄지 못하겠고 홍수라도 삼키지 못하나니”(아가 8:7). 사랑의 지속적인 힘과 강렬함은 낭만적인 관계 속에 자주 등장하지만, 그것이 온전히 나타나는 유일한 곳은 하나님께서 아들 예수 그리스도를 통해 사람들을 향해 가지신 그 사랑입니다.

견고하고 또 의지할 수 있다고 여기는 것들이 휩쓸려 없어질 때 우리가 느끼는 실망은 오히려 우리를 향한 하나님의 사랑을 새롭게 알 수 있는 계기가 될 수 있습니다. 주님의 사랑은 땅위의 그 어떤 것보다 더 높고 더 깊고 더 강하며 더 오래 지속됩니다. 우리가 어떤 일을 마주하든, 우리 곁에 계시면서 우리를 받쳐 주시고 도와주시며 우리가 사랑받고 있다는 것을 일깨워주시는 하나님과 함께 마주하고 있는 것입니다.

Indestructible Love

When we first saw the stream in our backyard, it was just a thin vein of water trickling through a bed of rocks in the heat of the summer. Heavy wooden planks served as a bridge we could easily cross. Months later, torrents of rain pounded our area for several days in a row. Our tame little creek swelled into a quick-moving river four-feet deep and ten-feet wide! The force of this water heaved the bridgeboards up and deposited them several feet away.

Rushing water has the potential to overwhelm almost anything that stands in its path. Yet there’s something that’s indestructible in the face of a flood or other forces that might threaten to destroy it— love . “Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot sweep it away” (SONG OF SONGS 8:7). Love’s persistent strength and intensity is often present in romantic relationships, but it’s only fully expressed in the love God has for people through His Son, Jesus Christ.

When the things we consider to be sturdy and dependable are swept away, our disappointment can open the door to a new understanding of God’s love for us. His affection is higher and deeper and stronger and longer lasting than anything on earth. Whatever we face, we face with Him beside us—holding us up, helping us along, and reminding us that we’re loved. - JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

믿음의 유산

빌리 그래함이 16세 때 결정적으로 그리스도를 믿게 된 데에는 그보다 훨씬 전부터 예수님께 온전히 헌신하였던 부모님이 계셨습니다. 그들은 둘 다 믿는 가정에서 자라면서 신앙을 갖게 되었습니다. 빌리의 부모는 결혼 후에도 자녀들과 함께 기도하고 성경을 읽고 성실하게 교회에 출석하는 등, 사랑으로 자녀들을 양육하면서 신앙의 대물림을 하였습니다. 빌리 그래함의 부모가 아들 빌리를 위해 다져놓은 견고한 기초는 하나님께서 그에게 믿음을 심어주고 마침내 담대한 복음전도자로 부르시기 위해 사용하셨던 토양의 일부였습니다.

바울 사도의 젊은 제자 디모데도 든든한 영적 기반을 물려받았습니다. 바울은 “네 속에 거짓이 없는......믿음은 먼저 네 외조모 로이스와 네 어머니 유니게 속에 있더니”(디모데후서 1:5)라고 썼습니다. 이 유산이 디모데가 그리스도를 믿도록 마음을 준비하고 앞으로 나아가는데 도움을 주었습니다.

이제 바울은 디모데에게 그 믿음의 전통을 이어나가(5절), “우리에게......능력을 주시는” 성령을 통해 디모데 안에 있는 “하나님의 은사를 다시 불일 듯하게 하라”고 독려합니다(6-7절). 성령의 능력으로 디모데는 두려움 없이 복음을 위해 살아갈 수 있었습니다(8절). 든든한 영적 유산이 있다고 해서 우리의 믿음이 보장되는 것은 아닙니다. 그러나 다른 사람들의 본을 따르고 조언을 듣는 것이 그 길을 준비하는데 도움이 됩니다. 그리고 예수님을 구주로 영접하면 그 다음 성령께서 우리를 섬김의 길로, 주님을 위한 삶으로, 그리고 다른 사람들의 믿음을 자라게 하는 데로 인도하실 것입니다.

A Legacy of Faith

Long before the decisive moment when Billy Graham came to faith in Christ at age sixteen, his parents’ devotion to Jesus was evident. They’d both come to faith while growing up within a family of believers. After their marriage, Billy’s parents continued that legacy by lovingly nurturing their children, including praying and reading Scripture and attending church faithfully with them. The solid foundation Graham’s parents laid for Billy was part of the soil God used to bring him to faith and, eventually, to his calling as a bold evangelist.

The apostle Paul’s young protégée Timothy also benefited from a strong spiritual foundation. Paul wrote, “Your sincere faith . . . first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice” (2 TIMOTHY 1:5). This legacy helped prepare and steer Timothy’s heart toward faith in Christ.

Now Paul urged Timothy to carry on this faith tradition (V 5), to “fan into flame the gift of God” within him through the Holy Spirit, who “gives us power” (VV 6–7). Because of the power of the Spirit, Timothy could fearlessly live for the gospel (V 8). A strong spiritual legacy doesn’t guarantee we’ll come to faith, but the example and mentoring of others can help prepare the way. And after we receive Jesus as Savior, the Spirit will guide us in service, in living for Him, and even in nurturing the faith of others.- ALYSON KIEDA

다시 전쟁터로

그 여자는 어렸을 때 자기 부모에게 잔인한 말들을 마구 해댔습니다. 그녀는 그 말들이 자기가 부모님과 주고받은 마지막 말이 되리라고는 꿈에도 생각지 했습니다. 그녀는 여러 해 상담을 받아왔지만 지금까지도 자신을 용서하지 못합니다. 죄책감과 후회로 아무것도 못하고 있습니다.

우리 모두는 후회를 안고 살아갑니다. 그 중에는 매우 아픈 후회도 있습니다. 그러나 성경은 우리에게 죄책감을 이기고 나갈 수 있는 길이 있음을 보여줍니다. 한 가지 예를 봅시다.

성경은 다윗왕의 행적을 있는 그대로 보여줍니다. 당시는 “왕들이 출전할 때” 였지만 “다윗은 예루살렘에 그대로 있었습니다”(사무엘하 11:1). 전쟁터에서 멀리 떨어진 곳에서 다윗은 다른 남자의 아내를 은밀히 범하고는 이를 감추려 살인죄까지 범했습니다(2-5,14-15절). 하나님께서 다윗의 추락을 막아주기는 하셨지만(12:1-13) 왕은 자신의 죄를 의식하며 남은 생을 살아가야 했습니다.

다윗이 무너진 자신의 모습에서 다시 일어서고 있을 때 부하 장군 요압은 다윗이 지휘해야 했던 전투에서 승리하고 있었습니다 (12:26). 요압은 다윗에게 다음과 같이 요구하였습니다. “이제 왕은 그 백성의 남은 군사를 모아 그 성에 맞서 진 치고 이 성을 쳐서 점령하소서”(28절). 마침내 다윗은 하나님이 정해주신 자리인 나라와 군대의 지도자로 다시 돌아갔습니다(29절).

과거의 일로 우리 스스로를 망가뜨린다면 그것은 사실 하나님께 그분의 은혜로는 충분치 않다고 말하는 것과 같습니다. 우리가 이전에 무엇을 했든, 우리 하나님 아버지는 우리를 완전히 용서해주십니다. 우리도 다윗처럼 넘치는 은혜를 입어 전쟁터로 다시 돌아갈 수 있습니다.

Back in the Battle

As a child, she had hurled vicious words at her parents. Little did she know that those words would be her last interaction with them. Now, even after years of counseling, she can’t forgive herself. Guilt and regret paralyze her.

We all live with regrets—some of them quite terrible. But the Bible shows us a way through the guilt. Let’s look at one example.

There’s no sugarcoating what King David did. It was the time “when kings go off to war,” but “David remained in Jerusalem” (2 SAMUEL 11:1). Away from the battle, he stole another man’s wife and tried to cover it up with murder (VV 2–5, 14–15). God stopped David’s downward plunge (12:1–13), but the king would live the rest of his life with the knowledge of his sins.

While David was rising from the ashes, his general, Joab, was winning the battle David should have been leading (12:26). Joab challenged David, “Now muster the rest of the troops and besiege the city and capture it” (V 28). David finally got back to his God-appointed place as the leader of his nation and his army (V 29).

When we permit our past to crush us, in effect we’re telling God His grace isn’t enough. Regardless of what we’ve done, our Father extends His complete forgiveness to us. We can find, as David did, grace enough to get back in the battle. - TIM GUSTAFSON
