건축을 멈추지 말라!

사이먼은 직장에서 새로운 역할을 맡을 기회가 주어졌을 때 그것이 하나님의 선물이라고 믿었습니다. 어떻게 해야할까 기도하고 도움을 구한 그는 하나님이 그에게 더 큰 책임들을 감당할 기회를 주신 것이라고 느꼈습니다. 모든 일이 맞아 떨어졌고 그의 상사도 그가 옮기는 것을 지원해주었습니다. 그런데 그 후에 일이 잘못되기 시작했습니다. 일부 동료들이 그의 승진에 분개하고 협력을 거부한 것입니다. 그는 포기해야 하나 고민하기 시작했습니다.

이스라엘 백성들이 하나님의 전을 짓기 위해 예루살렘으로 돌아왔을 때에도 대적들이 위협하고 낙담시키려 했습니다 (에스라 4:4). 처음에 건축을 중단한 이스라엘 백성들은 하나님이 선지자 학개와 스가랴를 통해 격려하시자 건축을 계속하였습니다(4:24-5:2).

그러자 또 다시 대적들이 그들을 괴롭혔습니다. 그러나 이번에는 “하나님의 눈이 [그들을] 돌보신다”(5:5)는 것을 알고 견뎌냈습니다. 그들은 하나님의 말씀을 굳게 붙잡고 하나님이 어떤 대적도 헤쳐나가게 해주실 것을 믿었습니다. 그리고 정말로 하나님은 바사 왕의 마음을 움직여 성전을 완공하도록 지원하게 하셨습니다(13-14절).

마찬가지로 사이먼도 그냥 머무를 것인지 아니면 새로운 자리로 옮길 것인지 분별할 수 있는 하나님의 지혜를 구했습니다. 하나님께서 그에게 머물라고 하시는 것을 느낀 그는 하나님의 능력에 의지하여 인내했습니다. 시간이 흐르면서 그는 서서히 동료들의 신임을 얻게 되었습니다.

하나님을 따르려고 할 때 주님이 우리를 어디에 두시든 도중에 반대에 부딪힐 수 있습니다. 그때가 바로 계속 주님을 따라야 할 때입니다. 주님은 우리를 인도하여 끝까지 이끌어주실 것입니다.

Don’t Stop Building!

When an opportunity came to take on a new role at work, Simon believed it was a godsend. After praying over the decision and seeking counsel, he felt that God was giving him this opportunity to take on bigger responsibilities. Everything fell into place, and his boss supported his move. Then things began to go wrong. Some colleagues resented his promotion and refused to cooperate. He began to wonder if he should give up.

When the Israelites returned to Jerusalem to build the house of God, enemies sought to frighten and discourage them (EZRA 4:4). The Israelites stopped at first, but continued after God encouraged them through the prophets Haggai and Zechariah (4:24–5:2).

Once again, enemies came to hassle them. But this time they persevered, knowing “the eye of their God was watching over [them]” (5:5). They held on firmly to God’s instructions and trusted Him to carry them through whatever opposition they’d face. Sure enough, God moved the Persian king to support the temple’s completion (VV. 13–14).

Similarly, Simon sought God’s wisdom to discern whether he should stay or find a new position. Sensing God calling him to remain, he relied on God’s strength to persevere. Over time, he slowly gained his colleagues’ acceptance.

As we seek to follow God, wherever He places us, we may face opposition along the way. That’s when we need to keep following Him. He will guide us and carry us through. - LESLIE KOH

만짐의 능력

20세기 인도 의료선교의 선구자였던 폴 브랜드 박사는 나병과 관련되어 낙인이 찍힌 사람들을 직접 보게 되었습니다. 진료 중에 그는 환자에게 손을 대며 치료가 가능하다고 안심시켜주었습니다. 그러자 눈물이 그 남자의 얼굴을 타고 흘러내리기 시작했습니다. 보조원이 브랜드 박사에게 그 눈물의 의미를 설명해주었습니다 . “선생님은 오랫동안 아무도 손대지 않았던 그 사람을 만져주셨습니다. 그 눈물은 기쁨의 눈물입니다.”

예수님의 사역 초기에 한 나병환자가 주님께 다가왔습니다. 고대에는 온갖 종류의 전염성 피부 질환이 다 나병으로 취급받았습니다. 그 남자는 그의 병 때문에 구약의 율법에 따라 공동체 밖에서 살아야만 했습니다. 만약 그 나병환자가 우연히 가까운 거리에 있는 건강한 사람을 보면 “부정하다! 부정하다!”라고 외쳐서 사람들이 그를 피할 수 있도록 해야 했습니다 (레위기 13:45-46). 그래서 아마도 그 병자는 여러 달, 아니 여러 해 동안 사람들과 아무런 접촉이 없이 지냈을 것입니다.

예수님은 불쌍히 여겨 손을 내밀어 그 사람을 만지셨습니다. 예수님은 말씀 한 마디로 사람들을 고칠 능력과 권세를 가지신 분이십니다(마가복음 2:11-12). 그러나 육신의 질병으로 고립되고 거부당하는 사람을 만나셨을 때, 예수님은 그를 만져주심으로 혼자가 아니며 받아들여졌다는 확신을 주셨습니다.

하나님께서 우리에게 그런 기회를 주실 때 우리도 은혜를 함께 나누며 부드러운 손길로 존엄성과 가치를 전해주면서 우리의 긍휼을 보여주어야 합니다. 단순히 사람의 손으로 그렇게 만져줄 때, 치유의 능력은 상처받은 사람들에게 우리의 돌봄과 관심을 오래도록 생각나게 해줄 것입니다.

Power of Touch

Dr. Paul Brand, twentieth-century pioneer medical missionary to India, saw firsthand the stigma associated with leprosy. During an appointment, he touched a patient to reassure him treatment was possible. Tears began to stream down the man’s face. An attendant explained the tears to Dr. Brand, saying, “You touched him and no one has done that for years. They are tears of joy.”

Early in His ministry, Jesus was approached by a man with leprosy, an ancient label for all types of infectious skin diseases. Because of his disease the man was required by the Old Testament law to live outside his community. If the sick man accidentally found himself in close proximity to healthy people, he had to call out, “Unclean! Unclean!” so they could avoid him (LEVITICUS 13:45–46). As a result, the man may have gone months or years without human contact.

Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out His hand and touched the man. Jesus had the power and authority to heal people with just a word (MARK 2:11–12). But as Jesus encountered a man whose physical illness left him feeling isolated and rejected, His touch assured the man that he was not alone but accepted.

As God gives us opportunities, we can extend grace and show compassion with a gentle touch that conveys dignity and value. The simple, healing power of human touch goes a long way to remind hurting people of our care and concern. - LISA SAMRA

하나님 되심을 감사

인사 카드에 인쇄된 수많은 감상적인 표현 가운데 가장 감동적인 것의 하나는 아마도 “당신이어서 감사합니다.”라는 단순한 표현일 것입니다. 만일 당신이 그런 카드를 받는다면 그 사람이 당신을 좋아하는 것은 그에게 대단한 일을 해주었기 때문이 아니라 당신의 존재 자체에 대해 감사하기 때문이라는 것을 알 수 있습니다.

이 같은 표현이 우리가 하나님께 “감사합니다”라고 말하는 최고의 방법 중 하나가 될 수 있을지 모릅니다. 물론 하나님이 우리 삶에 구체적으로 개입하실 때 우리는 “주님, 저에게 그 직장을 주셔서 감사합니다.” 라고 말할 수도 있습니다. 그러나 대부분의 경우 우리는 단순히 “하나님, 하나님 되심을 감사합니다.”라고 고백할 수 있습니다.

그것은 역대상 16장 34절과 같은 구절에도 들어있습니다. “여호와께 감사하라 그는 선하시며 그의 인자하심이 영원함이로다.” 선하신 사랑의 하나님이시기에 감사드립니다. 그리고 시편 7편 17절에도 있습니다. “내가 여호와께 그의 의를 따라 감사함이여.” 거룩하신 하나님이시기에 감사드립니다. 그리고 “우리가 감사함으로 그 앞에 나아가며......여호와는 크신 하나님이시요” (시편 95:2-3). 전능하신 하나님이심을 감사드립니다.

‘하나님 되심.’ 그것은 우리가 하던 일을 멈추고 하나님을 찬양하며 감사해야 할 충분한 이유가 됩니다. 하나님, 단지 하나님이시라는 그 사실에 감사드립니다!

Thanks for Who God Is

Among the thousands of sentiments printed on greeting cards, perhaps one of the most touching is this simple statement: “Thanks for being you.” If you receive that card, you know that someone cares for you not because you did something spectacular for that person but because you’re appreciated for your essence.

I wonder if this kind of sentiment might indicate for us one of the best ways to say “thank you” to God. Sure, there are times when God intervenes in our lives in a tangible way, and we say something like, “Thank You, Lord, for allowing me to get that job.” But most often, we can simply say, “Thank You, God, for being who You are.”

That’s what’s behind verses like 1 Chronicles 16:34: “Give thanks to the LORD , for he is good; his love endures forever.” Thank You, God, for who You are—good and loving. And Psalm 7:17: “I will give thanks to the LORD because of his righteousness.” Thank You, God, for who You are—the holy One. And “Let us come before him with thanksgiving . . . for the Lord is the great God” (PSALM 95:2–3). Thank You, God, for who You are—the Almighty God of the universe.

Who God is. That’s reason enough for us to stop what we’re doing and praise and thank Him. Thank You, God, for just being You! - DAVE BRANON

위험한 무관심

화가 시지스문드 괴츠는 “사람들의 멸시와 거부”라는 제목의 그림으로 빅토리아 시대의 영국에 충격을 주었습니다. 괴츠는 그림 속에서 그가 살던 시대의 사람들에게 둘러싸여 고난과 멸시를 받는 예수님의 모습을 그렸습니다. 그들은 사업과 연애, 정치 등 자신의 관심사에만 사로잡혀 놀랍게도 구세주의 희생에 대해서는 완전히 잊어버렸습니다. 그리스도에게 무관심한 군중들은 마치 예수님의 십자가 밑에 있던 폭도들처럼 무엇을, 그리고 누구를 놓쳤는지 전혀 몰랐습니다.

오늘날도 신자와 불신자 모두 영원한 것으로부터 쉽게 마음이 멀어집니다. 예수님을 따르는 사람들은 하나님의 위대한 사랑의 진리를 가리는 이 안개 같은 장애물을 어떻게 없앨 수 있을까요? 우리는 하나님의 자녀들인 서로를 사랑함으로써 시작할 수 있습니다. 예수님은 “너희가 서로 사랑하면 이로써 모든 사람이 너희가 내 제자인 줄 알리라”(요한복음 13:35)고 말씀하셨습니다.

그러나 진정한 사랑은 거기서 멈추지 않습니다. 우리는 사람들을 구주 예수님께로 인도하기를 바라며 복음을 전함으로 그 사랑을 전하는 것입니다. 바울이 쓴 것처럼 “우리는 그리스도의 전권 대사입니다” (고린도후서 5:20, 현대인의 성경).

이와 같이 그리스도의 몸된 우리는 우리에게 절실히 필요한 하나님의 사랑을 서로에게, 그리고 세상에 보여주고 비춰줄 수 있습니다. 성령의 능력을 힘입은 사랑과 복음 전파의 두 가지 수고로 예수님 안에 있는 놀라운 하나님의 사랑을 못 보게 하는 장애물이 사라질 수 있기를 간절히 바랍니다.

Dangerous Distractions

Artist Sigismund Goetze shocked Victorian-era England with a painting entitled “Despised and Rejected of Men.” In it, he portrayed the suffering, condemned Jesus surrounded by people of Goetze’s own generation. They were so consumed by their own interests—business, romance, politics—that they were shockingly oblivious to the Savior’s sacrifice. Indifferent to Christ, the surrounding crowd, like the mob at the foot of Jesus’s cross, had no idea what—or who—they had missed.

In our day as well, believers and unbelievers alike can easily become distracted from the eternal. How can followers of Jesus cut through this fog of distraction with the truth of God’s great love? We can begin by loving one another as fellow children of God. Jesus said, “Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples” (JOHN 13:35 NLT ).

But real love doesn’t stop there. We extend that love by sharing the gospel in hopes of drawing people to the Savior. As Paul wrote, “We are . . . Christ’s ambassadors” (2 CORINTHIANS 5:20).

In this way, the body of Christ can both reflect and project God’s love, the love we so desperately need, to both each other and to our world. May both efforts, empowered by His Spirit, be a part of cutting through the distractions that hinder us from seeing the wonder of God’s love in Jesus. - BILL CROWDER

격려의 발걸음

스티븐 탐슨 메모리얼 센티피드는 여느 크로스컨트리 경기와는 다릅니다. 일곱 명으로 구성된 각 팀이 총 3마일 중 첫 2 마일을 밧줄을 잡고 함께 달리다가, 2마일 지점에서 밧줄을 놓고 각자가 경주를 마칩니다. 따라서 각 사람의 기록은 그 팀의 속도와 개인의 속도의 조합으로 이루어집니다.

올 해 나의 딸이 속한 팀은 전에 본 적이 없는 전략을 택했습니다. 그들은 가장 빠른 주자를 제일 앞에 두고 가장 느린 주자를 바로 그 뒤에 두었습니다. 딸은 그것이 가장 강한 주자가 가장 느린 주자에게 되도록 가까운 거리에서 격려의 말을 해주기 위해서라고 설명했습니다.

그들의 계획은 나에게 히브리서의 한 구절을 떠올려 주었습니다. 저자는 우리에게 “믿는 도리의 소망을 움직이지 말며 굳게 잡고 서로 돌아보아 사랑과 선행을 격려하라”(히브리서 10:23-24)고 권합니다. 그렇게 하는 방법은 분명 많이 있겠지만 저자는 한 가지를 강조하여 “어떤 사람들의 습관과 같이 모이기를 중단하지 말고 서로 격려하라” (25절, 현대인의 성경)고 말합니다. 할 수 있는 한 다른 믿는 사람들과 함께 모이는 것이 믿음 생활에 필수 요소입니다.

때로 인생의 경주가 감당할 수 없이 느껴지기도 하고, 절망 가운데 끈을 놓고 싶은 유혹에 빠지기도 합니다. 그럴 때 함께 달리면서 힘차게 달릴 수 있도록 서로를 격려해줍시다!

Bound to Encourage

The Steven Thompson Memorial Centipede is a crosscountry meet unlike any other. Each seven-member team runs as a unit, holding a rope for the first two miles of a three-mile course. At the two-mile mark, the team drops the rope and finishes the race individually. Each person’s time is, therefore, a combination of the pace the team kept and his or her own speed.

This year, my daughter’s team opted for a strategy I had not previously seen: They put the fastest runner at the front and the slowest right behind her. She explained that their goal was for the strongest runner to be near enough to speak words of encouragement to the slowest runner.

Their plans depicted for me a passage from the book of Hebrews. The writer urges us to “hold unswervingly to the hope we profess” (HEBREWS 10:23) as we “spur one another on toward love and good deeds” (V. 24). There are certainly many ways of accomplishing this, but the author highlighted one: “not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another” (V. 25). Gathering together with other believers as we’re able is a vital aspect of the life of faith.

The race of life can feel like more than we can handle at times, and we may be tempted to drop the rope in hopelessness. As we run together, let’s offer one another the encouragement to run strong! - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

멍청한 양, 선한 목자

내 친구 채드는 와이오밍주에서 양치기로 일 년을 지냈습니다. 그는 나에게 “양들은 얼마나 멍청한지 바로 앞에 있는 것만 먹어. 앞에 있는 풀을 다 먹고도 새 풀을 찾으려고 돌아보지 않아. 그냥 흙이라도 먹기 시작할 거야!”라고 말했습니다.

우리는 웃었지만 나는 성경이 얼마나 자주 사람들을 양들에 비유하는지 생각하지 않을 수 없었습니다. 우리에게 목자가 필요한 것은 아주 당연합니다! 그러나 양들은 너무 멍청하기 때문에 아무나 목자가 되어선 안 됩니다. 양들에게는 보살펴주는 목자가 필요합니다. 에스겔 선지자는 바벨론에 잡혀 유배 중이던 하나님의 백성들에게 편 지하면서 그들을 나쁜 목자에게 이끌리는 양으로 비유했습니다. 이스라엘의 지도자들은 양떼를 보살피기보다는 착취하여 이득을 취하고(3절), 짐승들이 집어삼키도록 내버려두었습니다(5절).

그러나 그들에게 희망이 없지는 않았습니다. 선한 목자이신 하나님께서 그들을 착취하는 지도자들로부터 구해주시기로 약속하셨습니다. 주님은 그들을 고향으로 데려와 푸른 풀밭에 누이시며 안식을 주시겠다고 약속하셨습니다. 주님은 상한 자를 고치시고 잃어버린 자를 찾으실 것이며(11-16절), 짐승들을 쫓아내어 그분의 양떼가 안전하게 하실 것입니다(28절).

하나님의 양떼는 사랑의 보살핌과 인도가 필요합니다. 우리를 언제나 푸른 풀밭으로 인도하시는 목자이신 주님이 우리에게 있으니 얼마나 복된지 모릅니다!(14절).

Dumb Sheep, Good Shepherd

My friend Chad spent a year as a shepherd in Wyoming. “Sheep are so dumb that they’ll only eat what is right in front of them,” he told me. “Even if they’ve eaten all the grass in front of them, they won’t turn to look for a fresh patch—they’ll just start eating dirt!”

We laughed, and I couldn’t help but think about how often the Bible compares humans to sheep. No wonder we need a shepherd! But since sheep are so dumb, not just any shepherd will do. Sheep need a shepherd who cares about them. When the prophet Ezekiel wrote to God’s people in exile, captives in Babylon, he compared them to sheep led by bad shepherds. Instead of caring for the flock, Israel’s leaders had exploited them, profiting from them (V. 3) and then leaving them for the wild animals to devour (V. 5).

But they were not without hope. God, the Good Shepherd, promised to rescue them from the leaders who exploited them. He promised to bring them home, put them in lush pastures, and give them rest. He would heal the injured and go after the lost (VV. 11–16). He would banish wild animals, so that His flock would be safe (V. 28).

Members of God’s flock are in need of tender care and direction. How blessed we are to have a Shepherd who is always leading us to green pastures! (V.14). - AMY PETERSON

누가 운전하고 있나요?

내 이웃에 사는 팀은 모리스 센닥의 인기 있는 어린이 책 ‘괴물들이 사는 나라’에 나오는 “괴물” 인형을 자동차 계기판 위에 올려놓고 있습니다.

얼마 전 팀의 차가 내 뒤를 따라왔는데 급작스레 속도를 내어 따라붙을 때도 있었습니다. 도착한 다음 나는 “그 ‘괴물’이 운전했나요?”라고 물었습니다.

다음 주일날 나는 설교 노트를 깜빡 잊고 집에 두고 와서, 노트를 가져오려고 “날듯이” 교회를 빠져나오다가 길에서 팀을 지나쳤습니다. 나중에 만났을 때 그는 농담으로 “그 ‘괴물’이 운전했나보죠?”라고 물었습니다. 우리는 웃었지만 그의 말은 정곡을 찔렀습니다. 나도 제한 속도를 지켜야 했던 것입니다.

성경은 하나님과의 관계 안에 사는 것이 무엇을 의미하는지를 설명하면서 “[우리 자신] 모두를 하나님께 드리라”(로마서 6:13)고 권면합니다. 나는 그날 팀이 나에게 한 말을 나의 “폭주”를 잘 다스리라는 하나님의 부드러운 충고로 받아들였습니다. 나는 사랑하는 마음으로 나의 모든 것을 주님께 드려야하기 때문입니다.

“누가 운전하고 있습니까?”라는 질문은 우리의 삶 전체에 적용됩니다. 우리의 오랜 죄의 본성인 걱정, 두려움, 자의식이라는 “괴물”에게 우리를 내어주겠습니까, 아니면 우리의 성장을 도우시는 사랑의 성령님과 은혜에 맡기겠습니까?

하나님께 내어드리는 것이 우리에게 유익합니다. 성경은 하나님의 지혜가 우리를 “즐거움과 평안의 길”(잠언 3:17, 현대인의 성경)로 인도한다고 말합니다. 주님께서 인도하시는 곳으로 따라가는 것이 더 좋습니다.

Who’s Driving?

My neighbor Tim has a figurine on his dashboard of a “wild thing” based on Maurice Sendak’s beloved children’s book Where the Wild Things Are.

Not long ago Tim was following me through traffic and made some abrupt moves to keep up. When we arrived, I asked, “Was that the ‘wild thing’ driving?”

The following Sunday I forgot my sermon notes at home. I “flew” out of the church to retrieve them, passing Tim along the way. When we met later, he joked, “Was that the wild thing driving?” We laughed, but his point hit home—I should have paid attention to the speed limit.

When the Bible describes what it means to live in a relationship with God, it encourages us to “offer every part of [ourselves]” to Him (ROMANS 6:13). I took Tim’s response to me that day as a gentle reminder from God to yield my “lead foot,” because I am to give all of myself to Him out of love.

The question of “who’s driving?” applies to all of life. Do we let the “wild things” of our old sin nature drive us—like worry, fear, or self-will—or do we yield to God’s loving Spirit and the grace that helps us grow?

Giving in to God is good for us. Scripture says that God’s wisdom takes us down “pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace” (PROVERBS 3:17). Better to follow where He leads. - JAMES BANKS

확실한 소망

1940년대에 윌리엄 월리스 박사가 중국 우저우에서 외과 의사로 선교 활동을 하고 있을 때 일본이 중국을 침략했습니다. 그 당시 스타우트 메모리얼 병원의 원장이었던 월리스는 바지선에 의료 장비를 싣게 하고 보병의 공격을 피하여 강을 오르내리며 병원의 기능을 유지했습니다.

월리스는 위험할 때마다 그가 좋아하던 빌립보서 1장 21절의 말씀, 곧 그가 산다면 구주를 위해 할 일이 있는 것이고, 죽는다면 그리스도와 함께 하는 영생의 언약을 받는 것이라는 것을 잊지 않았습니다. 이 구절은 그가 1951년에 무고하게 투옥되어 죽었을 때에 특별한 의미를 갖게 되었습니다.

바울은 편지에서 예수님을 따르는 사람들이 본받아야 할 깊은 헌신에 대해 말하며, 우리에게 주님을 위해 시련이나 위험까지도 감수할 수 있게 해줍니다. 그 헌신은 성령님과 우리의 가장 가까운 사람들의 기도로 가능합니다(19절). 그것은 또한 약속입니다. 힘든 상황 속에서 계속 헌신적으로 섬길 때에도 우리는 이 약속을 기억합니다. 그것은 우리의 삶과 일이 여기서 끝날지라도 우리 앞에는 예수님과 영원히 함께 하는 기쁨이 있다는 것입니다.

우리의 가장 힘든 순간에도 헌신된 마음으로 그리스도와 함께 걷고 주님과 영원히 함께 할 약속에 우리의 시선을 굳게 고정시킨다면, 하나님의 사랑으로 우리의 하루하루와 행동들이 다른 사람들에게 축복이 될 수 있을 것입니다.

Confident Hope

Dr. William Wallace was serving as a missionary surgeon in Wuzhou, China, in the 1940s when Japan attacked China. Wallace, who was in charge of Stout Memorial Hospital at the time, ordered the hospital to load his equipment on barges and continue to function as a hospital while floating up and down rivers to avoid infantry attacks.

During dangerous times, Philippians 1:21—one of Wallace’s favorite verses— reminded him that if he lived, he had work to do for the Savior; but if he died, he had the promise of eternity with Christ. The verse took on special meaning when he died while falsely imprisoned in 1951.

Paul’s writing reflects a deep devotion we can aspire to as followers of Jesus; enabling us to face trials and even danger for His sake. It is devotion enabled by the Holy Spirit and the prayers of those closest to us (V. 19). It’s also a promise. Even when we surrender ourselves to continued service under difficult circumstances, it is with this reminder: when our life and work end here, we still have the joy of eternity withJesus ahead of us.

In our hardest moments, with hearts committed to walking with Christ now, and with our eyes firmly fixed on the promise of eternity with Him, may our days and our acts bless others with the love of God. - RANDY KILGORE

하나님의 임재

불안해하는 아버지와 그의 십대 아들이 점쟁이 앞에 앉아 있었습니다. “당신 아들이 얼마나 먼데로 갑니까?”라고 점쟁이가 물었습니다. 아버지는 “큰 도시로요. 그리고 오랫동안 가 있을 겁니다.”라고 말했습니다. 점쟁이는 아버지에게 탈리즈만(일종의 행운의 부적)을 건네며 “이것이 어디를 가든 아이를 보호해줄 겁니다.”라고 말했습니다.

내가 그 아들이었습니다. 그런데 그 점쟁이나 부적은 나에게 아무 도움도 되지 못했습니다. 나는 그 도시에 살면서 예수님을 믿었습니다. 그 부적을 버리고 그리스도께 매달렸습니다. 내 삶에 예수님이 계심으로 하나님이 함께 하신다는 것이 보장되었습니다.

30년이 지난 후 신자가 되신 아버지는 내 동생을 급히 병원으로 데려가던 순간에 이렇게 말했습니다. “성령님께서 지금 너와 함께가시고, 언제나 너와 함께 하시기를 위해 먼저 기도하자!” 우리는 하나님의 임재와 능력만이 우리의 유일한 보호가 된다는 것을 이미 알고 있었습니다.

모세도 비슷한 교훈을 배웠습니다. 그는 사람들을 애굽의 속박에서 구해내어 약속의 땅으로 인도하라는 힘든 임무를 하나님으로부터 받았습니다(출애굽기 3:10). 그러나 하나님은 그에게 “내가 반드시 너와 함께 있으리라”(12절)고 확신시켜주셨습니다.

우리의 여정에도 힘든 일들이 많이 있겠지만 우리는 하나님이 함께 하실 것을 확신합니다. 예수님은 제자들에게 “내가 세상 끝날까지 너희와 항상 함께 있으리라”(마태복음 28:20)고 말씀하셨습니다.

His Presence

The anxious father and his teenage son sat before the psychic. “How far is your son traveling?” the psychic asked. “To the big city,” the man replied, “and he will be gone for a long time.” Handing the father a talisman (a kind of good-luck charm), he said, “This will protect him wherever he goes.”

I was that boy. However, that psychic and that talisman could do nothing for me. While in that city, I put my faith in Jesus. I threw away the talisman and clung to Christ. Having Jesus in my life guaranteed God’s presence.

Thirty years later, my father, now a believer, said to me as we rushed my brother to the hospital, “Let us first pray; the Spirit of God goes with you and will be with you all the way!” We had learned that God’s presence and
power is our only security.

Moses learned a similar lesson. He had a challenging task from God—to lead the people out of bondage in Egypt and into the Promised Land (EXODUS 3:10). But God assured him, “I will be with you” (V. 12).

Our journey too is not without challenges, but we’re assured of God’s presence. As Jesus told His disciples, “I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (MATTHEW 28:20). - LAWRENCE DARMANI

우리가 할 수 있는 것

92세의 모리 부가르트는 병상의 몸으로도 미시간주의 노숙자들을 위해 털모자를 떴습니다. 보고에 의하면 그는 15년 동안 8천 개가 넘는 모자를 만들었다고 합니다. 부가르트씨는 자신의 건강이나 한계에 마음을 두지 않고 자신의 주위를 둘러보며 자신보다는 다른 사람들의 필요를 도울 수 있는 일을 먼저 했습니다. 그는 그 일이 자신을 즐겁게 해주었으며 삶에 목적을 주었다고 말했습니다. “주님 계신 천국으로 갈 때까지 이 일을 계속 할 겁니다.”라고 말했던 그는 2018년 2월에 주님 곁으로 갔습니다. 모자를 받은 대부분의 사람들은 이 이야기를 알지 못하고 또 그가 모자 하나를 뜨기 위해 얼마나 많은 수고를 했는지 모르지만, 모리의 꾸준한 사랑을 보여준 이 단순한 행동이 지금 온 세계 사람들에게 감동을 주고 있습니다.

우리도 자신의 문제를 넘어서 다른 사람들을 먼저 생각함으로 사랑과 자비의 구주 예수 그리스도를 본받을 수 있습니다(빌립보서 2:1-5). 왕 중의 왕이신 하나님께서 육신을 입으시고 진정한 겸손의 모습으로 “종의 형체”를 취하셨습니다(6-7절). 주님은 궁극적인 희생으로, 곧 자신의 목숨을 바쳐 우리를 대신해 십자가에 달리셨습니다(8절). 예수님은 우리를 위해 자신의 모든 것을 주셨으며......모든 사람이 하나님 아버지께 영광을 돌리게 하셨습니다(9-11절).

예수님을 믿는 자로서 친절한 행위로 다른 사람들에게 사랑과 관심을 나타내 보이는 것은 우리의 특권입니다. 우리가 줄 수 있는 것이 많지 않아 보여도 섬기려는 마음을 가지면 됩니다. 단순히 우리가 지금 할 수 있는 일들만 하여도 다른 사람들의 삶을 바꿀 수 있는 기회를 적극적으로 찾을 수 있습니다.

What We Can Do

Even though confined to his bed, 92-year-old Morrie Boogaart knit hats for the homeless in Michigan. He had reportedly made more than 8,000 hats in fifteen years. Instead of focusing on his health or limitations, Mr. Boogaart looked beyond himself and did what he could to place the needs of others above his own. He declared that his work made him feel good and gave him a purpose. He said, “I’m going to do this until I go home to the Lord”—which happened in February 2018. Though most recipients of his hats won’t know his story or how much he sacrificed to create each cap, Morrie’s simple act of persevering love is now inspiring people across the world.

We too can look past our struggles, place others before ourselves, and imitate our loving and compassionate Savior, Jesus Christ (PHILIPPIANS 2:1–5). God in the flesh—the King of Kings—took on the “very nature of a servant” in genuine humility (VV. 6–7). Giving His life—the ultimate sacrifice—He took our place on the cross (V. 8). Jesus gave everything for us . . . all for the glory of God the Father (VV. 9–11).

As believers in Jesus, it’s our privilege to show love and demonstrate concern for others through acts of kindness. Even if we don’t think we have much to offer, we can adopt the attitude of servanthood. We can actively seek opportunities to make a difference in people’s lives by simply doing what we can. - XOCHITL DIXON
