그리스도 안에서 함께 성장하기

캘리포니아 몬터레이 베이에서 어느 선장이 태평양 흰비단돌고래 15마리가 2,000마리가 넘는 거대한 돌고래 떼와 합류하는 장면을 목격했습니다. 다양한 종류와 연령대의 돌고래들이 포식자로부터 자신들을 보호하고, 함께 먹이를 잡아먹으며, 공동생활을 하기 위해 무리를 짓습니다. 그래도 이런 거대한 규모와 다양성은 보기 드문 광경이었습니다.

성경은 우리 신앙의 역사에서 기초가 되는, 다양한 사람들이 모인 특별한 모임을 기록하고 있습니다. 제자들이 예루살렘에서 오순절을 기념하고 있을 때, “홀연히 하늘로부터 급하고 강한 바람 같은 소리가 있어 그들이 앉은 온 집에 가득하며”(사도행전 2:2)라는 기록이 있습니다. 그들은 “성령의 충만함을 받고” 성령이 말하게 하심을 따라 다른 언어들로 말하기 시작했습니다(4절). “천하 각국으로부터” 온 경건한 사람들이 오순절을 지키기 위해 모여 있었는데 (5절) 거기 모인 여러 나라에서 온 사람들은 제자들이 큰 소리로 하는 말을 각자 “자기의 방언으로” 알아들을 수 있었습니다(6절). 그때 베드로는 예수님을 “주와 그리스도”라고 선포했습니다(36절). 그날 약 3,000명이 믿고 세례를 받았습니다 (41절). 하나님의 백성들이 이전과 전혀 다른 공동체 삶을 살아가자, 주께서 “구원받는 사람을 날마다 더하게” 하셨습니다(47절).

성령님의 능력으로 전 세계의 하나님의 백성들은 오늘날에도 함께 모여 공동체 안에서 성장하면서 예수님을 주님으로 선포하고 있습니다. 하나님은 이처럼 우리를 통해 그분의 나라를 계속 확장해 나가실 것입니다.

GATHERING TO GROW IN CHRIST

In Monterey Bay, California, a boat captain saw fifteen Pacific white-sided dolphins join a super pod of more than two thousand dolphins. Various types and ages of dolphins gather in pods to fend off predators, feed, and socialize. Still, the size and diversity of this super pod was a rare sight to behold.

The Bible records a rare gathering of diverse people that’s foundational in our faith history. As the disciples celebrated Pentecost in Jerusalem, “a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting” (Acts 2:2). They were “filled with the Holy Spirit,” who enabled them to speak in different languages (V. 4). People God created “from every nation under heaven” had also gathered for Pentecost (V. 5). When they investigated the loud noise, each person “heard their own language being spoken” by the disciples (V. 6). Then Peter proclaimed Jesus as “both Lord and Messiah” (V. 36). About three thousand believed and were baptized (V. 41). As God’s people lived in community like never before, He “added to their number daily those who were being saved” (V. 47).

By the power of the Holy Spirit, God’s people around the world still gather to grow in community and proclaim Jesus as Lord. Through us, He will continue expanding His kingdom.

내 안의 그리스도

르네상스 시대의 화가 알브레히트 뒤러는 스무 살의 나이에 그의 재능으로 명성을 얻었습니다. 당시 미술 평론가들은 그를 두고 “선으로 표현할 수 있는 가장 위대한 정신”이라고 불렀습니다. 뒤러의 명성이 퍼지자 영향력이 있는 사람들이 호화롭고 안락한 생활을 약속하며 그를 고용하려 했습니다. 심지어 조반니 벨리니와 라파엘로 같은 저명한 화가들도 뒤러의 작품에 존경을 표했습니다.

우리도 그리스도를 진실로 안다면 그렇게 살고 싶을 것입니다. 예수님을 믿고 그의 죽음과 부활을 하나님과 우리의 관계의 기반으로 받아들인다면, 이제 우리는 자신을 위해 사는 것이 아니라 예수님을 위해 살아야 합니다(갈라디아서 2:19). 우리는 예수님을 위해 살고, 예수님은 우리 안에 거하시며 우리를 통해 일하시는 것입니다. 바울 사도는 자신의 영적 변화에 대해 이렇게 고백했습니다. “이제는 내가 사는 것이 아니요 오직 내 안에 그리스도께서 사시는 것이라”(20절). 세상이 우리 안에 계시는 예수님을 볼 수 있도록 오늘 우리의 삶을 통해 그리스도의 영광의 빛이 드러나기를 바랍니다.

CHRIST IN ME

Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer became famous for his talent at age twenty. The art critics of his day called him “the greatest mind that ever expressed itself in line.” As his fame spread, influential people tried to hire him with promises of luxury and ease. Even other acclaimed artists such as Giovanni Bellini and Raphael revered his work.

In what experts consider to be his best self-portrait, Dürer mingled his physical characteristics with what he thought Jesus might have looked like. He painted himself with long, wavy hair, a beard, and eyes that seemed to convey a sense of divine purpose. While many assumed this was the artist’s prideful opinion of himself, others who knew him believed Dürer wanted to live a life that would allow people to see Jesus in him.

If we truly know Christ, this is our desire as well. Believing in Him and accepting His death and resurrection as the basis for our relationship with God means we should now live for Jesus—not for ourselves (GALATIANS 2:19). We live for Him, and He lives in us and works through us. The apostle Paul said this about his spiritual transformation: “I no longer live, but Christ lives in me” (V. 20). May the glory of Christ shine through our lives today so that the world sees Him in us.

하나님의 풍성한 공급

2024년 허리케인 헬렌으로 인한 홍수가 노스 캐롤라이나 주의 한 작은 마을을 거의 폐허로 만든 후 그곳의 한 목사는 감동적인 일이 계속 일어나고 있음을 발견했습니다. “필요한 것이 무엇인가요?”라는 끊임없는 문의에 정신없이 답하다 보면 필요할 때마다 계속 정확하게 구호의 손길이 나타나는 것이었습니다. 휴대폰 충전기가 필요할 때는 난데없이 어떤 사람이 발전기를 차로 실어와 교회에 충전소를 설치해주는가 하면, 식수가 필요할 때는 갑자기 대량의 생수통이 도착하기도 했습니다.

우연의 일치일까요? 성경은 단순한 우연이 아니라 하나님께서 그렇게 하신다고 말합니다. “나의 하나님이 그리스도 예수 안에서 영광 가운데 그 풍성한 대로 너희 모든 쓸 것을 채우시리라”(빌립보서 4:19). 30피트(약 9미터) 높이의 거센 물살에 거의 초토화된 마을에 그 약속은 공허하게 들릴 수 있습니다. 그러나 감옥에 있으면서 이 격려의 말씀을 전했던 바울에게도 고난은 늘 겪는 일이었습니다.

바울은 절실했던 재정적 지원에 대한 감사를 전하기 위해 빌립보 교회에 서신을 보냈습니다. 빌립보 교인들 외에는 아무도 그를 보살피지 않았던 것입니다(15절). 그래서 하나님은 그들을 사용해 바울의 필요를 채워 주셨습니다. 이렇게 바울의 서신은 “모든 신령한 복을”(에베소서 1:3) 누리게 하시는 우리 구주 예수 그리스도 안에서 “그의 영광의 풍성함”을 부어 주시는 하나님께 집중 조명을 합니다. 기쁨, 평강, 진리와 구원은 하나님께서 우리에게 공급하시는 것의 한 부분입니다. 또한 자비로우신 하나님은 우리가 필요로 할 때에 한 모금의 물까지도 공급하실 것입니다. 하나님은 참으로 사랑이 많고 인자하신 분입니다.

GOD’S RICH PROVISION

After Hurricane Helene’s floodwaters nearly destroyed his small North Carolina town in 2024, a pastor noticed an inspiring pattern. As he struggled to answer the persistent question, “What do you need?” donations kept showing up exactly when he needed them. Phone chargers? Out of the blue, a man drove up with a generator, creating a charging station at the church. Drinking water? Suddenly, pallets of water bottles arrived.

Coincidence? The Bible points us to God, not mere happenstance: “My God will meet all your needs according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus” (PHILIPPIANS 4:19). The promise might seem empty to a town nearly demolished by a thirty-foot wall of raging water. But Paul, who was in prison when he offered this encouragement, was no stranger to hardship.

Paul was writing to the church in Philippi to thank them for badly needed financial gifts. Except for them, he’d been neglected (V. 15). But God used them to meet his needs. So His words shined a bright light on God, who provided the “riches of His glory” found in Christ Jesus our Savior, in whom we have “every spiritual blessing” (EPHESIANS 1:3). Joy, peace, truth, and salvation are among the things He provides for us. In kindness as well, He’ll provide a drink of water too, if that’s what we need. What a loving, generous God.

하나님이 주시는 생명의 호흡

과학자들은 워터 애놀 도마뱀이 한번의 호흡으로 20분이나 물속에 있을 수 있다는 사실을 발견했습니다. 발수(撥水) 피부를 가진 이 작은 도마뱀은 깊이 잠수한 후에 공기방울을 내쉬어 그것이 주둥이 끝에 붙어있게 합니다. 그런 후에 이 영리한 도마뱀은 그 방울 속의 공기를 반복해 호흡하는데 과학자들은 이것을 공기를 가둬놓고 재활용하는 것으로 생각합니다. 이 워터 애놀 도마뱀이 특이한 능력을 가지고 있기는 하지만 이 도마뱀도 다른 많은 생명체들처럼 살기 위해서는 역시 숨을 쉬어야 합니다.

창세기 2장은 하나님께서 “생기를 [아담의] 코에 불어넣으시니 사람이 생령이 되었다”(7절)고 기록합니다. 하나님이 “땅과 하늘”에 있는 모든 것을 창조하실 때(4절), “땅의 흙으로” 사람도 지으셨습니다(7절). 그러나 사람이 온전한 생명체가 되기 위해서는 하나님이 주시는 생명의 호흡이 필요했습니다. 하나님은 첫 인간을 살아 있는 존재, 곧 영혼이 살아 있는 존재로 만드셨습니다. 또한 하나님은 이후에 아담의 갈비뼈로 하와를 지으셨습니다(22절). 우리 인간은 영적인 존재이기 때문에 그리스도를 믿음으로써 하나님과 교제할 수 있습니다. 예수님도 제자들을 향해 “숨을 쉬며”, “성령을 받으라”고 하셨습니다(요한복음 20:22). 어느 주석가는 이렇게 “성령을 ‘들이쉬는 것’은 하나님과의 교제를 누리는데 반드시 필요하다”고 말합니다.

우리가 들이쉬는 호흡은 하나님께서 주신 육체적 생명의 선물입니다. 예수님을 믿는 우리에게 그 호흡은 또한 우리에게 영생이 있음과 생명을 주시는 하나님의 영이 우리 안에 거하신다는 것을 말해줍니다(로마서 8:11).

GOD’S BREATH OF LIFE

Researchers discovered that the water anole can stay underwater for twenty minutes without a fresh gulp of air. The tiny lizard has water-repelling skin, and after taking a deep dive it exhales a bubble of air that sticks to its snout. The clever creature then rebreathes the bubble again and again—something scientists believe is the recycling of the trapped air supply. Although water anoles possess this special ability, like many creatures, they must breathe to live.

In Genesis 2, we read that God “breathed into [Adam’s] nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being” (V. 7). As He created all things in “the heavens and the earth” (V. 4), He also created man from “the dust of the ground” (V. 7). But it took God’s breath of life to make His creation fully alive. He transformed the first human into a living being—a living soul. Later, He formed Eve from Adam’s rib (V. 22). As spiritual beings, we’re able to enjoy fellowship with Him by belief in Christ. Jesus “breathed on” the disciples and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit” (JOHN 20:22). One commentator writes that this “ ‘inbreathing’ of the Holy Spirit is essential in order for people to enjoy fellowship with God.”

Each breath we take is God’s gift of physical life. As believers in Jesus, it’s also a reflection of our eternal life and being indwelt by the life-giving Spirit (ROMANS 8:11).

하나님이 주시는 용기

어느 회사 대표가 거친 말로 직원들에게 상처를 주고 있었습니다. 그러나 아무도 그에게 반박하지 못했습니다. 진을 포함한 모두가 그를 두려워 했습니다. 어느 날 대표가 한 신입사원을 심하게 꾸짖어 결국 그녀는 눈물을 흘렸습니다. 사무실 안의 모든 사람이 침묵하는 모습을 본 진이 입을 열었습니다.

진이 그때를 말합니다. “그에게 사람들을 대하는 방식이 잘못되었다고 말했어요. 누군가 그에게 그렇게 맞선 건 처음이어서 그가 아주 놀랐습니다. 그는 그후에도 변하지 않았지만 나는 그때 나선 것을 잘했다고 생각합니다.”

성경은 많은 이들이 두려워하던 문제에 맞섰던 한 사람에 대해 기록하고 있습니다. 다윗의 용사 삼마는 다윗이 왕이 되기 전 어려움에 처해 있을 때 합류했는데(사무엘상 22:1–2 참조) 하나님은 그를 사용해서 블레셋을 물리쳤습 니다. “블레셋 사람들이... 녹두나무가 가득한 한쪽 밭에 모이매 백성들은 블레셋 사람들 앞에서 도망하였습니다”(사무엘하 23:11). 그러나 오직 삼마만이 용기를 내어 이스라엘의 식량을 지켰습니다. 혼자서 블레셋 군대에 맞서는 것은 곧 죽음을 의미했지만 삼마는 “그 밭 가운데 서서 막아 냈습니다”(12절).

하나님께서 삼마를 도와 블레셋을 물리치신 것입니다(12절). 그는 밭을 지키기 위해 나선 아마도 유일한 이스라엘 백성이었지만 사실은 혼자가 아니 었습니다. 하나님이 그와 함께하셔서 그날에 큰 승리를 주신 것입니다. 우리도 다른 사람들이 모두 회피하는 도전에 맞서라는 부르심을 받을 때가 있을 것입니다. 그럴 때 삼마처럼 하나님의 임재와 도우심에 의지해 굳게 서도록 합시다.

THE COURAGE GOD GIVES

The CEO was hurting employees with his sharp tongue. No one dared confront him. Everyone was afraid of him, including Gene. But one day the CEO berated a new employee, reducing her to tears. When Gene saw how everyone in the room stayed silent, he spoke up.

“I told him the way he was treating people was wrong,” Gene recalls. “He was astonished; it was the first time someone stood up to him. He didn’t change, but I’m glad I spoke up.”

Scripture tells us of another man who stood up to a challenge many were afraid of. Shammah, a military warrior of David, came to the future king from difficult circumstances (SEE 1 SAMUEL 22:1-2), but God used him to defeat the Philistines. “When the Philistines banded together at . . . a field full of lentils, Israel’s troops fled from them” (2 SAMUEL 23:11). Only Shammah had the courage to defend Israel’s food supply. Being the lone man against the Philistine army meant death, but Shammah “took his stand in the middle of the field. He defended it” (V. 12).

God helped Shammah defeat the Philistines (V. 12). He may have been the only Israelite in the field, but he wasn’t alone—God was with him, giving him great victory that day. There may be times when we’re called to stand up to a challenge that everyone else is avoiding. Like Shammah, let’s take our stand, relying on God’s presence and help.

하나님이 다스리시는 곳

2018년 한 남성이 뉴욕의 어느 호텔에 하룻밤을 묵으려 투숙했습니다. 놀라운 것은 그가 이후 5년 동안 한 푼도 더 내지 않고 그 방을 사용한 것입니다. 모호한 임대 관련 법의 허점을 이용해 방을 차지했던 것입니다. 그러나 그는 퇴거 거부로 결국 감옥까지 갈 수 있게 되었습니다.

계약 기간이 끝났는데도 계속 버티는 반갑지 않은 어느 세입자처럼, 야고보는 우리가 사단을 방치하면 우리 삶 속에 계속 머문다고 경고합니다. “마귀를 대적하라 그리하면 너희를 피하리라”(4:7)고 야고보는 기록합니다. 사도는 우리의 갈등이 마음의 교만, 갈등, 부정한 생각 같은 “정욕”이나 “잘못 구하기”(1, 3절)에서 비롯될 때가 많다고 강조합니다. 이런 유혹에 맞서기 위해 야고보는 두 가지를 권면합니다. “하나님께 복종”할 것과 “마귀를 대적”하는 것입니다(7절). 복종한다는 것은 우리 삶의 모든 부분을 하나님께 맡기는 것을 말합니다. 마귀를 대적하는 것도 적극적인 행동으로, 기도와 경각심과 성경의 지혜가 필요합니다.

불법 세입자를 내쫓는 집주인처럼, 우리는 하나님의 능력으로 마귀의 유혹이 우리를 지배하는 것을 거부할 수 있습니다. 우리가 마귀를 대적하면 “너희를 피하리라”(7절)고 했던 야고보의 말처럼 하나님은 승리를 약속하십니다.

우리가 죄와 마귀의 영향력을 몰아내고 “하나님을 가까이”하면(8절), 하나님의 평화와 기쁨과 목적이 우리 안에 더욱 충만하게 됩니다. 하나님이 다스리시는 곳에는 원수가 머물 수 없습니다!

WHERE GOD REIGNS

In 2018, a man checked into a room at New York hotel for a one-night stay. Remarkably, he used the room for five years without paying another cent—exploiting obscure rent laws to hold on to it. His refusal to leave, however, eventually led to potential prison time for him.

Like an unwelcome tenant who overstays, James warns us that the devil lingers in our lives when left unchecked. “Resist the devil,” James writes, “and he will flee from you” (4:7). The apostle emphasizes that our struggles often come from impure “desires” and “wrong motives” (VV. 1, 3)—things like pride, divided loyalties, and impure thoughts residing in our hearts. To counter such temptation, James offers two commands: “submit . . . to God” and “resist the devil” (V. 7). To submit means surrendering every part of our lives to God. Resisting the devil is equally active, requiring prayer, vigilance, and the wisdom of Scripture.

Like a landlord evicting an unlawful tenant, in God’s strength we can refuse to let the temptation of the devil overtake us. As we resist him, God promises victory as James asserts, “He will flee from you” (V. 7).

When we evict sin and the devil’s influence and “come near to God” (V. 8), we allow His peace, joy, and purpose to dwell more fully in us. The enemy can’t stay where God reigns!

아카데미상 수상 배우 덴젤 워싱턴은 젊은 배우들에게 매일 아침 기도로 하루를 시작하라고 권유하면서 반드시 “밤에 신발을 침대 아래 깊숙이 넣어두어 아침에 무릎을 꿇을 수 밖에 없게 만들라”는 조언을 했습니다.

규칙적으로 기도하는 습관을 기르려면 사려 깊고 때로는 창의적인 생각이 필요할 수 있지만, 역사를 통해 하나님의 백성들, 특히 어려운 시기를 맞은 백성들을 지탱시켜 준 영적인 훈련이 기도를 하게 합니다. 우리는 다리오 왕의 행정부에서 섬겼던 다니엘의 삶에서 그 모습을 볼 수 있습니다. 그는 정부의 최고 보좌관으로 빠르게 두각을 나타냈으나 이 때문에 그곳 출신 관료들의 미움을 샀습니다(다니엘 6:3). 그들은 질투심에 사로잡혀 다니엘을 축출할 음모를 꾸몄지만 다니엘에게서 흠잡을 만한 것은 다만 “하나님의 율법”에 충실하다는 사실밖에 없음을 곧 알게 되었습니다(5절). 관료들이 왕을 속여 다니엘이 기도하는 것을 불법으로 만드는 법령을 내리게 한 후에도 다니엘은 여전히 “전에 하던 대로 무릎을 꿇고 기도했습니다”(10절).

다니엘이 하나님이 주시는 지속적인 능력과 평안을 얻기 위해서는 꾸준한 기도 생활이 필수적이었습니다(시편 29:11). 그것이 그를 없애려 했던 세력들을 이기고 승리하게 도운 것입니다. 이처럼 우리도 기도로 하나님을 만나기 위해 규칙적인 시간을 정하고 그것을 매일의 우선순위로 삼으면 하나님과의 사이를 더욱 깊게 하는 데 도움이 될 것입니다. 우리가 만나는 어떤 어려움 속에서도 우리를 지켜주는 것은 바로 그분의 힘입니다.

POWER OF CONSISTENT PRAYER

Academy Award-winning actor Denzel Washington encouraged a group of young actors to begin each day with prayer, suggesting they “put your shoes way under the bed at night” to ensure they “gotta get on your knees in the morning.”

Developing a regular habit of prayer might take some thoughtful and even creative planning, but it’s a practice that has sustained God’s people throughout history—especially in difficult times. We see this in the life of Daniel, who served in King Darius’ administration. He quickly distinguished himself as the top government advisor, which angered local officials (DANIEL 6:3). Out of jealousy they plotted to oust the prophet, but quickly realized the only charge that would stick was related to Daniel’s devotion to the “the law of his God” (V. 5). Even after the officials tricked the king into making it illegal for Daniel to pray, Daniel still “got down on his knees, and prayed . . . just as he had done before” (V. 10).

A consistent prayer life was essential for Daniel to experience God’s sustaining strength and peace (PSALM 29:11). It helped him to triumph over the forces seeking to destroy him. In the same way, establishing a regular time to meet with God in prayer and making it a daily priority can help cultivate our relationship with Him. During each difficulty we face, it’s His strength that will sustain us.

모든 것을 아시는 하나님

마이클은 딸 그레이스가 메뉴판으로 자기를 가리는 모습을 보고 웃음을 참을 수 없었습니다. 둘은 음식을 기다리는 동안 카페 테이블에서 숨바꼭질 놀이를 했습니다. 그 다섯 살 난 아이는 아빠가 자기한테 안보이면 자기도 아빠한테 안 보인다고 생각한 모양이었습니다. 당시에는 우스워 보였지만, 마이클은 나중에 이 상황을 되돌아보면서 거기에 중요한 교훈이 담겨 있다는 것을 알았습니다. ‘우리는 우리 죄를 하나님으로부터 숨길 수 있다고 믿지는 않는가? 우리가 하나님을 볼 수 없으면 그분도 우리를 볼 수 없다고 생각하고 있지는 않는가?’

아모스 9장에서 하나님이 선지자를 통해 이스라엘 백성이 자신들의 죄에 대한 심판을 피할 수 있다고 생각하지 말라고 경고한 것은 바로 이 점을 말한 것입니다. 하나님은 그들이 “숨을지라도 내가 찾아낼 것”이며 “내가 그들에게 주목할 것이라”고 말씀하셨습니다(3-4절). 모든 것을 보시고 모든 것을 아시는 하나님의 눈을 그 어떤 것도 피할 수가 없습니다.

그러나 이 경고에는 희망의 메시지도 담겨 있습니다. 11절부터 15절까지 하나님은 “내가 다윗의 무너진 장막을 일으키고 그것들의 틈을 막으리라” (11절)며 회복을 약속하셨습니다. 하나님의 백성들은 죄의 대가를 치룬 후 회복되어 풍성한 복을 받게 되었습니다(13-15절).

우리의 잘못을 보시는 만큼 우리의 회개도 함께 보시는 하나님은 기꺼이 우리를 용서하시고 회복시키십니다. 이 사실에서 위로를 얻고 우리의 거룩하고 의로우신 하나님을 더욱 굳게 붙들고 나아갑시다. 그분은 자비와 은혜가 충만 하십니다.

GOD SEES ALL

Michael couldn’t help laughing as Grace hid behind a menu. They were playing a game of hide-and-seek at the table in a café while waiting for the food. The five-year-old thought that if she couldn’t see her father, then he couldn’t see her. It seemed silly at the time, but as Michael reflected on the situation later, he realized it contained an important lesson: Do we believe we can hide our sins from God? Do we think that if we can’t see Him, then He can’t see us?

In Amos 9, this same point is made when God, speaking through the prophet, warns Israel not to think they can escape judgment for their sins: “Though they hide themselves . . . I will hunt them down.” He said, “I will keep my eye on them” (VV. 3-4). Nothing escapes the eyes of the all-seeing, all-knowing God.

But the warning also came with a message of hope. In verses 11-15, God promises restoration: “I will restore David’s fallen shelter—I will repair its broken walls” (V. 11). After suffering the consequences of their sin, God’s people would be restored and given bountiful blessings (VV. 13-15).

Just as God sees our failings, He also sees our repentance, and He’s ready to forgive and restore. As we draw comfort from this truth, let’s hold on tightly to our holy and righteous God, who is full of mercy and grace.

우리를 위해 싸우시는 분

프로 권투 선수 짐 브래독은 부와 명예가 아니라 가족을 부양하기 위해 싸운 사람으로 알려져 있습니다. 영화 ‘신데렐라 맨’은 전성기가 지난 한 권투 선수가 동화 이야기처럼 세계 헤비급 챔피언으로 복귀하는 그의 일대기를 그렸습니다. 대공황 시대의 극심한 빈곤 속에서 짐은 자기의 아이들을 위해 자신의 인적 자원과 건강, 자존심을 거듭해 희생했습니다. 그는 가족을 지키기 위해서는 어떤 상대도 두려워하지 않으며 링에서 얻어맞는 고통을 용감하게 버텨냈습니다.

FIGHTING FOR YOU

Professional boxer Jim Braddock was known as someone who fought not for riches and fame but to put food on the table for his family. The movie Cinderella Man chronicles his fairytale-like comeback from a past-his-prime boxer to the world heavyweight champion. While facing extreme poverty during the Great Depression, Jim repeatedly sacrificed his own resources, health, and pride to provide for his children. He was never intimidated by an opponent and courageously endured pummeling in the ring to keep his family safe.

Jim’s legacy is one of passionate defense of his family. We, too, have a passionate defender who has promised to take our place in the ring. When the Israelites faced Pharaoh’s mighty army after their escape from slavery in Egypt, they were terrified and cried out to God. “It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!” they foolishly said (EXODUS 14:12). But Moses replied in faith, “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still” (V. 14). And without any action from the Israelites, their enemies were literally swept away by the sea as God supernaturally ended the battle before it even began.

Sometimes it feels like we’re facing the trials of life or arrows from the enemy, Satan, on our own (SEE PSALM 91:5). But God’s with us (DEUTERONOMY 31:6), and He fights for us; we need only to be still.

진정한 하나님의 아들

인공지능(AI)이 생성한 이미지들을 주제로 사진 공모전이 열렸습니다. 세계 곳곳에서 응모자들이 컴퓨터에서 AI 텍스트 프롬프트로 만든 그림들을 보내왔습니다. 여기엔 AI로 만든 이미지만 출품 가능했습니다. 수상작 중에는 초현실 같은 장면을 담은 작품이 하나 있었습니다. 그 그림은 모래사장을 배경으로 분홍색 플라밍고 같은 것 하나가 깃털로 된 공처럼 말려 있는 모습이었습니다.

그런데 문제는 그 수상작이 ‘진짜’ 플라밍고를 찍은 ‘진짜’ 사진이었다는 것입니다. 사진작가는 AI 공모전에 진짜 사진을 제출한 것입니다. 그의 작품 “플라밍곤(Flamingone)”은 실격 처리되었습니다. 그렇습니다. 진짜 사진이 진짜라는 이유로 거부당한 것입니다.

이사야 선지자는 예수 그리스도의 재판과 십자가 처형에 대한 비슷한 아이러니를 생생하게 예언하여 “(그가) 마치 도수장으로 끌려 가는 어린 양과 같았다”(이사야 53:7)고 했습니다. 그리스도는 자신이 유대인의 메시아라고 주장했다는 이유로 법정에 세워졌습니다. 그러나 한마디 변호도 하지 않으셨 습니다. “그가 곤욕을 당하여 괴로울 때에도 그의 입을 열지 아니하였음이여” (7절). 이사야는 이 같은 최악의 모순 상황을 지적하며 “그는 멸시를 받아 사람 들에게 버림받았다”(3절)고 하였습니다. 그렇습니다. 진짜 메시아이자 하나님의 진짜 아들이 가짜로 몰려 거부당한 것입니다.

오늘 우리는 결정을 내리는 법정의 재판관이라 할 수 있습니다. 우리는 예수님을 진정한 하나님의 아들로 받아들이고 있습니까? 아니면 예수님을 가짜 메시아로 거부하고 있습니까? 우리는 예수님을 믿으면서도 때로는 일상 생활에서 예수님을 부인하고 있지는 않는지요?

AUTHENTIC SON OF GOD

A photography contest featured images created by artificial intelligence (AI). People from around the world submitted pictures they had fabricated by AI text prompts on computers. Only AI-generated images were allowed. One winner was a surreal depiction: something that looked like a pink flamingo curled into a feathery ball, against a sandy landscape.

There was only one problem. The winning image was a real photograph of a real flamingo. The photographer had entered an authentic photo in an AI-contest. His picture, “Flamingone,” was disqualified. That’s right—the authentic photo was rejected for being the real thing.

The prophet Isaiah vividly foretells a similar irony about the trial and crucifixion of Jesus Christ: “He was led like a lamb to the slaughter” (ISAIAH 53:7). Christ was taken to court for claiming to be the Jewish Messiah. Yet he did not offer a defense: “He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth” (V. 7). Isaiah points to the ultimate contradiction: “He was despised and rejected by mankind” (V. 3). That’s right—the authentic Messiah, the true Son of God, was rejected as being fake.

Today, you and I are judges in that court of decision. Do we accept Jesus as the authentic Son of God? Or do we reject Him as something less? Even if we believe in Him, does our daily living sometimes reject Him as the real deal?
