하나님의 신실하신 사랑

교회에서 요양원 봉사활동을 하던 중, 거기 계신 한 연로하신 분으로부터 몇 년 전 그의 딸이 그를 거기로 데려와 입구 보도에 놓고 갔다는 이야기를 들었습니다. 에드라고 하는 그분은 휠체어를 타고 있어서 일어나 딸을 쫓아갈 수가 없었다고 합니다. 딸은 뒤도 돌아 보지 않고 차를 몰고 떠나 버렸습니다. 딸은 올 때 “우리 좋은 호텔로 갈 거예요.”라고 했다고 합니다. 그날은 그가 딸을 마지막으로 본 날이었습니다.

대부분의 가족은 노령의 가족을 사랑으로 돌보지만, 반대로 이렇게 명백한 학대 사례는 에드 같은 사람에게 깊은 상처로 남았습니다. 그는 아직도 그 날의 악몽에 시달리고 있습니다.

수세기 전, 한 젊은이도 트라우마를 겪었습니다(창세기 37:12-36). 요셉의 형들은 요셉을 구덩이에 던져 넣었다가 이집트로 가는 상인들에게 팔아 넘겼습니다. 그러나 “여호와께서 요셉과 함께 하시므로”(39:2) 낯선 땅에서 요셉은 주인 집(7-10절)과 감옥에서 용기를 가지고 옳은 일을 행하며 하나님이 “그에게 인자를 더하사 은혜를 받게”(21절)하신 것을 알았습니다. 요셉에게는 과거의 트라우마가 있었지만 하나님의 도우심으로 자신이 하는 모든 일에서 성공할 수 있었습니다(23절). 마침내 요셉은 바로의 총리가 되었고, 자신의 가정을 이루게 되었습니다(41:41-52). 나중에 그는 형제들과도 화해하게 되었습니다 (45:12-15).

사람들은 우리를 아프게 할 수 있지만, 하나님은 절대 그러지 않습니다. 하나님은 요셉에게 하신 것과는 다른 방법으로 우리를 치유하시지만, 우리에게 똑같이 신실한 사랑을 약속하십니다. 우리의 마음을 치유하시는 하나님을 신뢰하며 그분의 인도하심을 따릅시다.

GOD’S FAITHFUL LOVE

During our church outreach in a nursing home, an elderly resident told me of how his daughter had driven him there years before and simply left him on the sidewalk. In his wheelchair, Ed couldn’t get up to run after her. She’d returned to the car without looking back and had driven away. “We’re going to a nice hotel,” she’d said earlier. That day was the last time he saw her.

Vastly different in nature from the many loving family experiences of eldercare, this clear case of abuse traumatized Ed. He still has nightmares about that day.

Centuries ago, a young man also suffered trauma (GENESIS 37:12-36). Joseph’s brothers threw him into a cistern and sold him to traders going to Egypt. But “the Lord was with Joseph” (39:2). In an unfamiliar land, as he courageously did what was right in God’s eyes, both in his master’s house (VV. 7-10) and in prison, Joseph realized that God “showed him his faithful love” (V. 21 NLT). Despite the trauma of his past, Joseph was able to succeed in whatever he did because God helped him (V. 23). Eventually he became second-in-command to Pharaoh and raised a family of his own (41:41-52). Later, he even reconciled with his brothers (45:12-15).

People may hurt us, but God never will. Although He may help us heal in ways different from what He did for Joseph, He promises us His same faithful love. Let’s follow His leading as we trust Him to heal our hearts.

JOYFUL RESILIENCE

Scientists studied the resilience of sixteen societies worldwide, including the Yukon and Australian Outback. They analyzed thousands of years of archaeological records, tracing the impact of famines, wars, and climate. One factor stood out—the frequency of downturns. One would think that they would weaken societies, but the researchers found the opposite to be true. Instead, they found that societies that faced frequent hardships developed resilience, bouncing back faster from future challenges. Stress, it appears, can forge resilience.

The prophet Habakkuk understood this kind of resilience. As he considered Judah’s impending devastation, he painted a bleak picture: “crop fails,” “no sheep . . . no cattle,” and barren land (3:17). Amid earthly securities being stripped away, however, the prophet declared, “Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior” (V. 18). His joy wasn’t tied to circumstances and earthly pleasures but anchored in God’s unchanging character and salvation. In the bleakest seasons, the prophet chose joy and became more resilient.

Like Habakkuk and those resilient societies, our spiritual endurance grows through repeated adversity. When we face difficult seasons in life, let’s cling to our hope in God and remember that He’s with us—using our challenges to grow our joy and resilient faith.

HEARTS TRANSFORMED BY GOD

Like many people who struggle with pornography, Russell was exposed to it at a young age. The desire to use it was overpowering, and it poisoned his heart. “My life [became] completely saturated by it,” he writes, “so much so that it was like a cancer that was deeply rooted into my very fiber.” By God’s grace, he was finally set free of porn’s power—along with other addictions—when he received salvation in Jesus and was transformed from the inside out. “I credit it all to Jesus Christ, . . . [He’s] the one who delivered me,” Russell says.

Jeremiah delivered a message from God to Israel that one day He would “put [His] law in their minds and write it on their hearts” (31:33). Under this new covenant, fulfilled in Christ (HEBREWS 8:6-13), all people could be transformed by God’s grace through faith. And now, “his Spirit . . . lives in [us]” (ROMANS 8:11), and God’s moral law has been written on our hearts. For Russell, and for all who believe, the Holy Spirit’s power provides what’s needed to turn from harmful behavior that displeases God and seeks to destroy us.

Transformation isn’t always instantaneous or easy. But let’s remember that when we’re dealing with difficult—even addictive— sin, God can transform our hearts (JEREMIAH 31:33). He says, you “will know me” (V. 34 NLT), and we can also know His heartchanging power.

우리를 사랑하는 구원자

한 산림 관리인이 거센 산불 속에서 새끼 곰 한 마리를 구출했습니다. 사람들이 아직도 불길과 싸우고 있는 가운데 그 관리인은 좀 떨어진 안전한 복구 현장에서 구출한 곰을 땅에 내려 놓았습니다. 새끼 곰은 조그마한 뒷발로 서서 그의 종아리를 끌어안았습니다. 관리인은 부드럽게 밀쳐냈습니다. 절박하게 울부짖듯 입을 벌린 아기 곰은 자기를 구출한 사람 품에 있으려고 발톱을 세워 기어올랐습니다. 새끼 곰이 그의 팔에 매달리자 친절한 남자는 하는 수 없이 이 털복숭이 친구의 머리를 다정하게 쓰다듬었습니다.

새끼 곰이 자신을 죽음에서 구해 준 사람에게 확신을 갖고 필사적으로 매달렸던 것처럼 우리도 우리를 죽음에서 구하신 궁극적인 구원자 예수님께 매달릴 때 무슨 일이 일어날까요?

하나님이 지으신 모든 사람에게는 구원이 필요합니다. 시편 기자 다윗도 구원자, 곧 자신의 기도를 들으시고 응답하시는 하나님이 필요하다고 고백했습니다(시편 55:1-2). 그는 눈앞에 있는 어려움과 위협, 고통, 두려움을 인정하면서(3-5절) 확신을 가지고 하나님께 매달렸습니다. “나는 하나님께 부르짖으니 여호와께서 나를 구원하시리로다”라고 그는 말했습니다(16절). “저녁과 아침과 정오에 내가 근심하여 탄식하리니 여호와께서 내 소리를 들으시리로다”(17절). 다윗은 끊임없이 기도했습니다. 그는 하나님께서 들으시고 자신을 “구원하사 평안하게” 해 주실 것을 믿었습니다(18절).

OUR LOVING RESCUER

During a raging wildfire, a forest ranger saved a bear cub. At a recovery site safely away from those still fighting the inferno, he placed the rescued animal on the ground. Standing on its tiny back paws, the cub hugged the man’s calf. The ranger gently pried himself away. Mouth wide as if crying out in desperation, the little bear clambered and clawed in an attempt to remain in the refuge of his rescuer’s embrace. As the cub clung to his arm, the kind man relented and rubbed his furry friend’s head.

What if we pursued our ultimate rescuer—Jesus—with the same fierce desperation and confidence as the bear cub who pursued and clung to the one who saved him from death?

All people God made need saving. The psalmist David confessed his need for a rescuer—for God to hear and answer his prayers (PSALM 55:1-2). Admitting he faced troubles, threats, suffering, and fear (VV. 3-5), David pursued God with assurance. “As for me, I call to God, and the Lord saves me,” he said (V. 16). “Evening, morning and noon I cry out in distress, and he hears my voice” (V. 17). David prayed continually. He believed God listened and trusted that He would rescue him “unharmed” (V. 18).

When we face difficulties or suffering of any kind, like David, we can cry out to God. Our loving Rescuer, who pursues us, hears and saves us when we pursue Him too.

어느 날 오후 카페에서 나는 옆 테이블에 부모와 함께 있는 어린 아이를 보게 되었습니다. 부모가 친구들과 대화하는 동안 비둘기 하나가 날아 들어와 바닥의 빵 부스러기를 쪼아 먹기 시작했습니다. 이 광경이 너무나 놀라왔던 그 여자아이는 들뜬 소리로 어른들의 관심을 끌려 했지만, 어른들은 아이가 본 것을 보지 못했습니다. 그저 아이에게 한번 웃어주고 자신들의 대화를 이어갔습니다.

한번은 예수님이 제자들에게 가르치는 사역을 하도록 보내셨는데, 이는 엄청난 성공이었습니다(누가복음 10:17). 이에 예수님은 이런 기도를 하셨습니다. “이것을 지혜롭고 슬기 있는 자들에게는 숨기시고 어린 아이들에게는 나타내심을 감사하나이다”(21절). 여기서 “어린 아이들”은 나이가 아닌 지위와 마음의 상태를 말합니다. 복음을 받아들인 것은 겸손하고 평범한 “죄인들”이었고, “지혜롭고 학식있는” 종교 지도자들은 이를 무시했습니다(7:29-34). 하나님은 자신을 누구에게 보여주실지를 정하시고, 예수님은 물어보는 사람들에게 항상 하나님 나라에 대해 더 자세히 설명해 주셨습니다(마태복음 13:36 참조). 진실로 알고자 하는 마음이 없었던 지도자들은 예수님이 누구신지 알아보지 못했습니다.

카페의 어린 소녀는 부모들이 못 본 멋진 것을 보았습니다. 세상의 소음과 바쁨에 정신을 빼앗기거나, 더 알고자 하는 겸손함이 부족해서 하나님께서 자신을 우리에게 보여주시려는 것을 못 보는 일이 없기를 바랍니다.

EYES OPENED BY GOD

In a café one afternoon, I noticed a toddler with her parents at an adjacent table. As the parents talked with their friends, a pigeon flew in and started pecking crumbs from the floor. Filled with awe at this sight, the little girl tried getting the adults’ attention by squealing with delight. But they never got to see what she saw. They just smiled at her and returned to their conversation.

Jesus once sent His disciples on a preaching mission, which turned out to be tremendously successful (LUKE 10:17). “I praise you, Father,” Jesus prayed in response, “because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children” (V. 21). In this case, “little children” didn’t refer to age but status. It was humble, everyday “sinners” who responded to the gospel, while “wise and learned” religious leaders ignored it (7:29-34). While God decides who He reveals Himself to, Jesus always explained more about the kingdom to those who asked (SEE MATTHEW 13:36). The leaders had missed seeing who Jesus was because they didn’t really want to know.

The little girl in the café saw something wonderful while her parents missed out. May we never be so distracted by the world’s chatter, or lacking in humility to seek more understanding, that we miss what God wants to show us about Himself.

“하늘의 우리 왕 탄생을 알리는 캐롤보다 더 즐거운 노래가 어디 있을까?” 17세기 로버트 헤릭의 시 “가장 즐거운 노래”의 이 구절은 현대 합창 작곡가 존 러터에 의해 재해석되어 대림절 시즌에 많이 불리게 되었습니다. 그 부드러운 멜로디는 길고 추운 기다림 끝에 예수님이 오심 으로 따뜻해지는 봄 기운을 느끼게 합니다. 노래하는 이들은 그분께 크리스마스 캐롤을 올려드리고, 듣는 이들은 마음을 올려드리게 됩니다.

JESUS, THE GREATEST GIFT

“What sweeter music can we bring/ Than a carol for to sing/ The birth of this our heavenly King?” The lines of this seventeenth-century poem “What Sweeter Music” by Robert Herrick were reimagined by modern-day choral composer John Rutter to become an Advent season favorite. Its gentle melody describes a long, cold season of waiting that’s thawed by the springtime feeling of Jesus’ arrival. The singers bring Him a Christmas carol; the listeners are invited to bring their hearts.

Rutter’s arrangement was commissioned to correspond with a church reading on the wise men who brought Jesus gold, frankincense, and myrrh. These mysterious magi traveled a great distance to meet baby Jesus with the express purpose of worshiping Him (MATTHEW 2:1-2). When they finally found Him, they “were overjoyed,” bowed down in reverence, and “opened their treasures” at His feet (VV. 10-11). Warned in a dream, they left without informing wicked King Herod (V. 12).

The Christmas season shouldn’t focus on material gifts—but it’s certainly about giving and receiving gifts. God gave His Son to heal a broken world. If we’ve never given Him our hearts, today’s a wonderful day to do so. If He already reigns there, let’s offer a carol of peace and joy as we think about His arrival all those years ago in Bethlehem—and wait for His return.

예수님의 탄생 소식을 듣고 놀란 최초의 사람들은 평소와 다름없이 밤에 양을 지키던 목자들이었습니다. 갑자기 한 천사가 하나님의 영광으로 빛을 발하며 나타나 목자들을 놀라게 했습니다. 천사는 그들에게 두려워하지 말라고 하며 이렇게 말했습니다. “내가 온 백성에게 미칠 큰 기쁨의 좋은 소식을 너희에게 전하노라 오늘 다윗의 동네에 너희를 위하여 구주가 나셨으니 곧 그리스도 주시니라”(10-11절). 양 떼를 놔두고 천사의 말을 확인하러 나선 목자들은 천사가 전한대로 구유에 누인 아기를 발견했습니다(16, 20절).

목자들은 이 좋은 소식을 큰 기쁨으로 받아들였습니다. 우리도 경이로운 예수님의 탄생과 그의 삶을 기뻐하며 널리 전하도록 합시다.

FROM FRIGHT TO DELIGHT

Many historians believe the first-ever radio broadcast of music and speech was heard by radio operators on US Navy and other ships in the Atlantic on Christmas Eve, 1906. Instead of the usual beeps and pulses to transmit codes, they listened to Reginald Fessenden play a violin solo of the Christmas carol “O, Holy Night.” Fessenden closed his broadcast by echoing the angels’ praise: “Glory to God in the highest heaven!” (LUKE 2:14). The listeners must have been startled by the evocative music and statement of praise over the birth of Jesus.

The first people surprised by Jesus’ birth were the shepherds who’d been keeping to their usual business of watching their sheep at night. Then an angel appeared, shining with the glory of God and giving the shepherds a fright. The angel urged them not to be afraid and declared: “I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord” (VV. 10-11). The shepherds left their sheep to investigate the angel’s words and found the baby lying in a manger, just as they had been told (vv. 16, 20).

The shepherds accepted this good news of great joy. May we too rejoice and share the wonders of Jesus’ birth and life.

차별 금지

1872년, 율리시스 S. 그랜트 대통령이 워싱턴 DC에서 마차를 함부로 몰다가 경찰에게 적발되었습니다. 한 보도에 의하면 흑인 경찰관 윌리엄 웨스트가 그랜트 대통령에게 다음과 같이 경고를 주었다고 합니다. “대통령님, 마차를 너무 빨리 몰면 길을 건너는 보행자의 생명이 위험 합니다.” 그랜트 대통령은 사과했지만 다음 날 밤 다시 마차를 빨리 몰았습니다. 웨스트 경찰관은 이번에도 그의 마차를 멈춰 세웠습니다. “대통령님, 각하는 국가의 지도자이시고 저는 일개 경찰관인데, 매우 유감이지만 제게 맡겨진 임무는 임무입니다.” 웨스트는 대통령을 체포했습니다.

나는 자신의 임무를 다한 이 용감한 경찰관이 대단하다고 생각합니다. 그랜트 대통령도 그를 높이 평가하며 그의 자리를 지킬 수 있게 배려했습니다. 하나님도 기뻐하셨을 것입니다. 하나님은 차별이라는 불의를 싫어하시기 때문 입니다. “영광의 주 곧 우리 주 예수 그리스도에 대한 믿음을 너희가 가졌으니 사람을 차별하여 대하지 말라”(야고보서 2:1)고 하나님이 말씀하십니다. 부자와 권력자에게는 특별한 호의를 베풀고 가난한 자들에게는 그저 남은 것만 주는 것도 이러한 차별에 해당합니다(2-4절). 반대로 우리는 이웃을 우리 자신과 같이 사랑해야 합니다(8절). 만일 우리가 사람을 차별하여 부유한 이웃을 그렇지 않은 이웃보다 우대한다면, “죄를 짓는 것이니, 죄인으로 정죄”될 것입니다 (9절).

하나님은 우리를 차별하지 않으셨습니다. 우리가 아무것도 드릴 것이 없을 때에도, “세상에서 소망이 없고 하나님도 없는”(에베소서 2:12) 때에도 하나님은 우리를 사랑하셨습니다. 하나님의 도우심으로 우리도 모든 사람을 동등하게 사랑할 수 있습니다.

NO FAVORITISM

In 1872, President Ulysses S. Grant was stopped for recklessly driving his carriage through Washington DC. One published account says that the officer, an African American named William West, warned Grant, “Your fast driving, sir . . . is endangering the lives of the people who have to cross the street.” Grant apologized, but the next night he was racing carriages again. West stopped Grant’s horses. “I am very sorry, Mr. President, to have to do it, for you are the chief of the nation and I am nothing but a policeman, but duty is duty.” West arrested the president.

I admire this brave man for doing his duty. So did Grant. He praised West and made sure he kept his job. God also was pleased, for He hates the injustice of favoritism. He says, “Believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism” (JAMES 2:1). That includes not giving special favors to the rich and powerful, leaving only leftovers for the poor (VV. 2-4). Instead, we’re called to love our neighbor as ourselves (V. 8). If we play favorites, serving our platinum club neighbors rather than the less privileged, we “sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers” (V. 9).

God didn’t play favorites with us. He loved us when we had nothing to offer, when we were “without hope and without God in the world” (EPHESIANS 2:12). With His help, we can love all people equally.

주님의 사람들을 보내 주소서

내 친구 마리짜는 혼자 여러 도시를 다녀야 하는 일을 하게 되면서 종종 외로움을 느꼈습니다. 그러던 어느 날 함께 저녁을 먹던 중 그녀가 상체를 나에게 기울이며 말했습니다. “젠, 나는 하나님께 주님의 사람들을 보내 달라고 기도했어.” 그리고 얼마 지나지 않아 하나님께서 예수님을 믿는 사람들을 계속 만나게 해주셨다고 말했습니다. 어떤 날은 하루에 세 명을 만난 적도 있다고 했습니다!

우리가 예수님을 믿는 사람들을 만나면 영적으로 통하는 것을 경험합니다. 말로 설명하기 힘들지만 이것은 마치 우리 안에서 불꽃이 일어나는 것과도 같습니다. 우리는 예수 그리스도에 대한 성경의 가르침을 믿고, 예수님을 통해 하나님과 연결될 수 있다는 사실을 믿는 가장 중요한 공통점을 가지고 있습니다(로마서 10:9).

무엇보다도 성령님께서 모든 믿는 사람들 안에 거하시며 우리를 강하게 하나로 엮어 주십니다. 성경은 이것을 사람의 몸의 각 지체들이 서로 연결되어 있는 것에 비유합니다. 고린도전서 12장 13절은 “우리가 유대인이나 헬라인이나 종이나 자유인이나 다 한 성령으로 세례를 받아 한 몸이 되었다.”고 말합니다.

하나님은 우리 삶 가운데 하나님을 사랑하는 사람들을 통해 역사하십니다. 그들은 가까이 또는 멀리 있는 사람들일 수 있고, 처음 만나거나 오래 알고 지낸 사람들일 수 있습니다. 우리는 가장 외로운 시간에 하나님의 사람들을 보내 달라고 간구할 수 있고, 동시에 우리 자신도 다른 이들에게 힘이 되는 도구로 사용해달라고 기도할 수 있습니다.

SEND ME YOUR PEOPLE

When my friend Maritza took a job that required traveling to many different cities by herself, she often felt lonely. But over dinner one night, she leaned in and told me, “Jen, I prayed and asked God to send me His people.” She went on to say it wasn’t long before she’d begun to meet other believers in Jesus on a regular basis. Once, she met three in one day!

When we encounter others who have faith in Jesus, we share a spiritual connection. In a hard-to-explain way, this lights a spark within us. We have the most important thing in common because we believe what the Bible says about Christ and how it’s possible to have a relationship with God through Him (ROMANS 10:9).

Most importantly, the Spirit of God lives in each believer, knitting us together so powerfully that the Bible compares us to the interconnected parts of the human body. First Corinthians 12:13 says, “We were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body”— the body of Christ.

God often works in our lives through others who love Him, whether they’re near or far, known or new acquaintances. In our loneliest times, we can ask Him to send His people—even as we offer ourselves to be used by Him to encourage others.

우리는 에콰도르 선교 여행 중 여러 집을 방문하다 양파를 수확하는 남자를 보고 기도하는 마음으로 다가갔습니다. 나는 서툰 스페인어로 친구들과 함께 잠시 성경에 대해 이야기하고 싶다고 말했습니다. 그는 일손을 멈추고 우리가 전하는 간증에 귀를 기울였습니다. 이어서 같이 갔던 한 사람이 영어로 성경말씀을 소리 내어 읽기 시작했습니다. 그 남자가 우리가 건넨 스페인어 성경을 함께 읽던 그 순간은 안데스 산맥의 한 곳에서 복음이 선포되는 참으로 거룩한 시간이었지요! 우리는 그와, 그리고 멀리서 일하던 그의 가족과 이야기를 나누고, 함께 기도한 후 다음 집을 향해 발길을 옮겼습니다.

우리가 산기슭을 따라 걸으며 성경을 읽어주고 사람들에게 그리스도를 전하는 동안, 나는 예수님이 이 땅에 사시는 동안 제자들과 함께 이스라엘의 언덕과 골짜기를 걸으며 복음을 전하시던 모습을 떠올렸습니다.

이사야 52장 7절은 이렇게 말합니다. “좋은 소식을 전하며 평화를 공포하며 복된 좋은 소식을 가져오며 구원을 공포하며 시온을 향하여 이르기를 네 하나님이 통치하신다 하는 자의 산을 넘는 발이 어찌 그리 아름다운가.” 이 말씀은 이스라엘 백성이 오랜 포로 생활에서 벗어나 고향으로 돌아오는 때를 예언한 것입니다. 그러나 이 말씀은 오늘날 우리가 예수 그리스도의 복음을 전할 때에도 여전히 적용됩니다.

우리의 선교지는 멋진 안데스 산맥 같은 곳이 아닐지라도, 하나님께서 우리를 어디에 두시든지, 성령님께서는 우리가 만나는 사람들에게 구원의 소식을 전할 수 있도록 우리를 도우십니다.

BRINGING GOOD NEWS

The man was harvesting onions when we prayerfully approached him during the home visits we were conducting on our mission trip in Ecuador. In broken Spanish, I told him my friends and I would like to briefly speak to him about the Bible. He paused to listen as we shared our testimonies with him. Then one of my teammates started reading Scripture aloud in English. What a sacred moment it was for all to hear the good news read on the side of the Andes mountains as the man read along in Spanish with the booklet we had given him! We talked with him and his family who’d been working off in the distance, prayed for them, and continued to the next house.

As we walked along the mountainside reading Scripture and talking to people about Christ, I thought of Jesus and His disciples walking along the hills and valleys of Israel during His earthly ministry.

Isaiah 52:7 says, “How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation.” The prophet was referring to the time when God’s people would return to their homeland after years in exile, but it still applies to us today whenever we share the good news of Jesus with others.

Our opportunities may not be in the spectacular Andes, but wherever God has placed us, the Holy Spirit can help us share the message of salvation with those He puts in our path.
