시간의 의미

오스 기니스는 ‘불가능한 사람들’이란 그의 책에서 아프리카 속담을 인용하여 이렇게 말했습니다. “서양인에게는 시계가 있고, 아프리카 사람에게는 시간이 있다.” 그의 글은 다른 사람들의 부탁에도 “시간이 없다”고 거절했던 순간들을 돌아보게 했습니다. 나는 급한 일에서 벗어나지 못하고 시간표와 마감 시간에 쫒기 듯 사는 내 삶에 대해 생각해보았습니다.

모세는 시편 90편에서 “우리에게 우리 날 계수함을 가르치사 지혜로운 마음을 얻게 하소서”(12절)라고 기도했습니다. 그리고 바울은 이렇게 썼습니다. “그런즉 너희가 어떻게 행할지를 자세히 주의하여......세월을 아끼라 때가 악하니라”(에베소서 5:15-16).

바울과 모세는 시간을 현명하게 사용하는 것은 단지 시간을 잘 지키는 것만은 아니라고 생각했을 것입니다. 상황에 따라 우리는 빡빡한 일정을 지켜야할 때도 있고, 아니면 누군가에게 우리의 귀한 시간을 더 내주어야 할 때도 있는 것입니다.

우리가 그리스도를 위해 세상에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 시간은 너무나 짧기 때문에 이 기회를 최대한 살려야 합니다. 그것은 잠시 우리의 시계와 계획표는 접어두고 주님이 우리에게 보내시는 사람들에게 그리스도의 오래 참으시는 사랑을 실천하는 것을 뜻하기도 합니다.

우리가 영원한 그리스도의 능력과 은혜 안에 거하면 우리의 시간도 영원한 것에 사용됩니다.

하나님 아버지, 하나님은 우리에게 맡기신 일을 성취하도록 모든 시간을 주셨습니다. 하나님을 영화롭게 하는데 우리 시간을 사용하게 하소서.

시간 관리란 시간을 지키는 것이 아니라, 우리에게 있는 시간을 최대한 선용하는 것을 말한다.

Telling Time

“Westerners have watches. Africans have time.” So said Os Guinness, quoting an African proverb in his book Impossible People. That caused me to ponder the times I have responded to a request with, “I don’t have time.” I thought about the tyranny of the urgent and how schedules and deadlines dominate my life.

Moses prayed in Psalm 90, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (V 12). And Paul wrote, “Be very careful, then, how you live . . . making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil” (EPHESIANS 5:15–16).

I suspect that Paul and Moses would agree that our wise use of time isn’t just a matter of clock-watching. The situation may call for us to keep a tight schedule—or it may compel us to give someone an extended gift of our time.

We have but a brief moment to make a difference for Christ in our world, and we need to maximize that opportunity. That may mean ignoring our watches and planners for a while as we show Christ’s patient love to those He brings into our lives.

As we live in the strength and grace of the timeless Christ, we impact our time for eternity.- BILL CROWDER

매순간이 중요하다

내가 만난 에이다는 친구나 가족들과 모두 사별하고 요양원에서 지내고 있었습니다. 그녀는 “늙으며 가장 힘든 것은 사람들이 나를 놔두고 먼저 가는 것을 봐야하는 것이지요.”라고 말했습니다. 어느 날 에이다에게 어떤 일에 관심이 있는지, 어떻게 시간을 보내는지 물었습니다. 그녀는 “내게 사는 것이 그리스도니 죽는 것도 유익함이라”(빌립보서 1:21)라고 했던 바울 사도의 성경말씀으로 대답하면서 이렇게 말했습니다. “내가 살아 있는 동안 해야 할 일이 있지요. 몸이 괜찮은 날에는 여기 있는 사람들에게 예수님 이야기를 하고요, 힘든 날에는 기도를 합니다.”

의미심장하게도 바울은 감옥에서 빌립보서를 썼습니다. 그리고 그는 많은 그리스도인이 죽음을 맞이하면서 깨닫게 되는 하나의 현실을 인정했습니다. 천국이 우리를 반기는 듯 보이지만 우리가 이 땅에 남겨놓은 시간도 하나님께 중요하다는 것입니다.

바울처럼 에이다도 자기가 살아 숨 쉬는 모든 순간이 하나님을 섬기고 영화롭게 하는 기회라는 것을 알았습니다. 그래서 에이다는 다른 사람들을 사랑하고 그들에게 구원의 주님을 소개하면서 나날을 보냈습니다.

그리스도인은 아무리 힘든 순간에도 하나님과 동행하면 영원한 기쁨의 약속을 붙잡고 살 수 있습니다. 그리고 살면서도 하나님과의 관계를 누립니다. 하나님은 우리의 모든 순간들을 의미 있게 해주십니다.

Every Moment Matters

When I met Ada, she had outlived her entire group of friends and family and was living in a nursing home. “It’s the hardest part of getting old,” she told me, “watching everyone else move on and leave you behind.” One day I asked Ada what kept her interest and how she spent her time. She answered me with a Scripture passage from the apostle Paul (PHILIPPIANS 1:21): “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” Then she said, “While I’m still around, I have work to do. On my good days, I get to talk to the people here about Jesus; on the hard days, I can still pray.”

Significantly, Paul wrote Philippians while in prison. And he acknowledged a reality many Christians understand as they face their mortality: Even though heaven seems so inviting, the time we have left on Earth matters to God.

Like Paul, Ada recognized that every breath she took was an opportunity to serve and glorify God. So Ada spent her days loving others and introducing them to her Savior.

Even in our darkest moments, Christians can hold on to the promise of permanent joy in the company of God. And while we live, we enjoy relationship with Him. He fills all our moments with significance. - RANDY KILGORE

잘못된 비판

나는 평소에 휴대폰을 보며 거리를 걷는 사람들을 보면 속으로 이렇게 말하며 쉽게 비판했습니다. ‘저러다가 차에 치인다는 걸 왜 모를까? 자기 안전에 관심도 없나?’ 그런데 내가 어느 날 한 골목길의 입구에서 길을 건너면서 문자 메시지를 보느라 내 왼편의 차를 보지 못했습니다. 다행히 운전자는 나를 보고 차를 급하게 멈췄습니다. 나는 부끄러웠습니다. 독선으로 남을 손가락질했던 것이 모두 나에게로 돌아왔습니다. 다른 사람을 비판했던 내가 똑같은 행동을 한 것이었습니다.

나의 위선은 예수님이 산상수훈에서 하신 말씀과 같은 종류의 것이었습니다. “외식하는 자여 먼저 네 눈 속에서 들보를 빼어라 그 후에야 밝히 보고 형제의 눈 속에서 티를 빼리라”(마태복음 7:5). 나에게 큰 “들보” 가 있었습니다. 이 사각지대를 통해서 잘못된 판단으로 다른 사람들을 비판했던 것입니다.

예수님은 또한 “너희가 비판하는 그 비판으로 너희가 비판을 받을 것이다”(7:2)라고 말씀하셨습니다. 그날 자동차 앞을 지나가는 나를 발견하고 급정거한 운전자의 짜증 섞인 표정을 떠올리면 휴대폰에 몰두하는 사람들을 볼 때 짜증을 냈던 나의 모습이 함께 떠오릅니다.

우리는 아무도 완벽하지 않습니다. 그러나 나는 가끔 이 사실을 잊어버리고 성급하게 남을 비판합니다. 우리는 모두 하나님의 은혜가 필요한 사람들입니다.

Impaired Judgment

I’ve been quick to judge anyone I saw walking in the street while staring at a phone. How could they be so oblivious to the cars about to hit them? I’ve told myself. Don’t they care about their own safety? But one day, while crossing the entrance to an alleyway, I was so engrossed in a text message, that I missed seeing a car at my left. Thankfully, the driver saw me and came to an abrupt stop. But I felt ashamed. All of my self-righteous finger-pointing came back to haunt me. I had judged others, only to do the same thing myself.

My hypocrisy is the kind of thinking that Jesus addressed in the Sermon on the Mount: “First take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye” (MATTHEW 7:5). I had a huge “plank”—a blind spot through which I judged others with my own impaired judgment.

“For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged,” Jesus also said (7:2). Recalling the disgusted look on the driver’s face that day, after having to make an abrupt stop when I walked in front of the car, I’m reminded of the disgusted looks I gave others engrossed in their phones.

None of us is perfect. But sometimes I forget that in my haste to judge others. We’re all in need of God’s grace. - LINDA WASHINGTON

환난 중의 축복

나는 가끔 ‘내가 일으킨 문제는 나 스스로 해결해야 한다.’고 생각합니다. 은혜의 하나님을 믿으면서도 여전히 나에게 자격이 있어야만 하나님의 도움을 받을 수 있는 것처럼 행동하곤 합니다.

하나님이 야곱을 처음 만나신 장면은 이것이 얼마나 잘못된 생각인지를 잘 말해줍니다.

야곱은 자신의 운명을 바꾸는 일에 일생을 보냈습니다. 그는 둘째로 태어났는데 당시는 대개 장자가 아버지의 축복을 받았고, 그것이 풍요로운 앞날을 약속한다고 믿었던 시대였습니다.

그래서 야곱은 어떻게든 아버지의 축복을 받기 위해 무엇이든 하기로 결심했습니다. 결국 그는 속임수를 써서 자기 형에게 가야 할 축복을 빼앗는 데 성공했습니다(창세기 27:19-29).

그러나 그 대가로 가정이 깨어지고 야곱은 분노하는 그의 형을 피해 도망을 갔습니다(41-43절). 해가 지면서(28:11) 야곱은 분명 전에 생각했던 축복받는 삶과는 너무나 멀게 느껴졌을 것입니다.

그러나 지난 날 여러 번 속임수를 썼던 야곱은 바로 그곳에서 하나님을 만났습니다. 하나님은 이미 축복을 받은 야곱에게 그렇게 결사적으로 축복을 받으려 애쓸 필요가 없다고 하셨습니다. 물질의 축복보다 훨씬 중요한 하나님의 뜻(14절), 곧 야곱의 앞날은 그를 결코 떠나지 않으리라 하신 하나님이 지키고 계셨습니다(15절).

야곱은 남은 생애를 이 교훈을 되새기며 살았습니다.

우리도 마찬가지입니다. 후회되는 일이 아무리 많아도, 그리고 하나님이 아무리 멀리 계신 것처럼 느껴져도, 하나님은 여전히 우리와 함께 계시며 우리를 환난에서 끌어내어 그의 축복으로 친절히 인도하십니다.

Blessing in the Mess

I got myself into this mess, so I’d better get myself out, I sometimes find myself thinking. Although I believe in a God of grace, I’m still prone to act as if His help is available only when I deserve it.

God’s first encounter with Jacob is a beautiful illustration of how untrue this is.

Jacob had spent a lifetime trying to alter his destiny. He’d been born second at a time when firstborn sons typically received their father’s blessing—believed to guarantee future prosperity.

So Jacob decided to do whatever it would take to get his father’s blessing anyway. Eventually, he succeeded—through deceit—obtaining the blessing intended for his brother (GENESIS 27:19–29).

But the price was a divided family, as Jacob fled from his furious brother (VV 41–43). As night descended (28:11), Jacob must have felt as far from a life of blessing as ever.

But it was there, leaving behind a trail of deception, that Jacob met God. God showed him he didn’t need desperate schemes to be blessed; he already was. His destiny—a purpose far greater than material prosperity (V 14)—was held securely by the One who would never leave him (V 15).

It was a lesson Jacob would spend his whole life learning.

And so will we. No matter how many regrets we carry or how distant God seems, He is still there—gently guiding us out of our mess into His blessing. - MONICA BRANDS

우리의 피난처

나의 맨 처음 직장은 패스트푸드 점이었습니다. 어느 토요일 저녁 한 남자가 계속해서 내 주위를 맴돌며 언제 퇴근하는지 물었습니다. 나는 마음이 불편했습니다. 시간이 더 지나자 그는 감자튀김을 주문했고, 또 음료수를 주문했습니다. 그래서 매니저는 그를 내쫓지 못했습니다. 집은 멀지 않았지만 가는 길에 어두운 주차장 두 곳과 거리가 꽤 되는 모래밭을 지나야 했기 때문에 걸어가기가 두려웠습니다. 이윽고 자정이 되어 나는 가게 사무실에 들어가 전화를 걸었습니다.

전화를 받은 사람은 아버지였는데 즉시 따뜻한 침대에서 일어나 5분 만에 나를 데리러 오셨습니다.

그날 밤 아버지가 나를 도우러 올 것을 믿은 나의 확신은 우리가 시편 91편에서 보게 되는 확신과도 비슷합니다. 하늘에 계신 우리 아버지는 우리가 혼란이나 두려움이나 곤경에 빠져 있을 때 우리와 항상 함께 계셔서 보호하고 돌보십니다. 하나님은 “그가 내게 간구하리니 내가 그에게 응답하리라”(시편 91:15)라고 분명히 말씀하십니다. 하나님은 우리가 안전을 위해 달려갈 어떤 ‘장소’가 아니라 우리의 피난처 그 자체이십니다(1절). 하나님은 우리가 피할 수 있는 요새입니다(2절).

두려움이나 위험, 불확실함이 몰려올 때에, 우리는 하나님께 기도하면 하나님이 들으시고 환난 가운데 우리와 함께하신다고 하신 약속에 의지할 수 있습니다(14-15절). 하나님은 우리의 피난처이십니다.

Our Safe Place

My very first job was at a fast-food restaurant. One Saturday evening, a guy kept hanging around, asking when I got out of work. It made me feel uneasy. As the hour grew later, he ordered fries, then a drink, so the manager wouldn’t kick him out. Though I didn’t live far, I was scared to walk home alone through a couple of dark parking lots and a stretch through a sandy field. Finally, at midnight, I went in the office to make a phone call.

And the person who answered—my dad—without a second thought got out of a warm bed and five minutes later was there to take me home.

The kind of certainty I had that my dad would come to help me that night reminds me of the assurance we read about in Psalm 91. Our Father in heaven is always with us, protecting and caring for us when we are confused or afraid or in need. He declares: “When they call on me, I will answer” (PSALM 91:15 NLT ). He is not just a place we can run to for safety. He is our shelter (V 1). He is the Rock we can cling to for refuge (V 2).

In times of fear, danger, or uncertainty, we can trust God’s promise that when we call on Him, He will hear and be with us in our trouble (VV 14–15). God is our safe place. -CINDY HESS KASPER

광고한 대로

휴가 중에 남편과 나는 조지아의 차타후치 강을 따라 내려가는 쉬운 래프팅 코스에 등록했습니다. 샌들과 여름옷과 챙이 넓은 모자 차림으로 간 나는 광고에는 없던 가벼운 급류타기가 코스에 들어있는 것을 알고 걱정이 되었습니다. 다행히도 우리 부부는 급류타기에 경험이 있는 부부와 함께 타게 되었습니다. 그들은 남편에게 노를 젓는 기본 기술을 가르쳐주고, 우리를 목적지까지 안전하게 안내해주겠다고 약속했습니다. 구명조끼가 있음을 다행으로 여기며 나는 강 하류의 진흙 제방에 도달할 때까지 비명을 지르며 보트의 플라스틱 손잡이를 꽉 잡고 있었습니다. 나는 강가에 내려 물이 찬 핸드백을 털어냈고 남편은 나의 젖은 옷자락 짜는 것을 도와주었습니다. 그 여행은 광고대로는 아니었지만 우리는 크게 웃으며 즐길 수 있었습니다.

여행의 중요한 세부 내용을 빠트린 안내서와는 다르게 예수님은 제자들에게 장차 급류를 겪게 될 것이라고 분명히 경고하셨습니다. 예수님은 그들이 박해와 순교를 당할 것과, 주님 자신은 죽고 부활하실 것을 말씀하셨습니다. 또한 주님은 그들을 확실한 승리와 영원한 소망으로 인도해주실 것을 약속하시며 자신이 신뢰할 수 있는 분이심을 확인시켜주셨습니다(요한복음 16:16-33).

예수님을 따라갈 때 삶이 더 편해진다면 좋겠지만, 주님은 제자들이 환난을 겪을 것이라고 분명히 말씀하셨습니다. 그러나 예수님은 우리와 함께 계시겠다고 약속하셨습니다. 예수님의 부활이 이미 우리에게 영원한 승리를 가져다주었기 때문에 어떤 시련도 우리를 향한 하나님의 계획을 정하거나 제한하거나 부술 수 없습니다.

As Advertised

During a vacation, my husband and I signed up for a leisurely rafting tour down Georgia’s Chattahoochee River. Dressed in sandals, a sundress, and a wide brimmed hat, I groaned when we discovered—contrary to the advertisement—that the trip included light rapids. Thankfully, we rode with a couple experienced in whitewater rafting. They taught my husband the basics of paddling and promised to navigate us safely to our destination. Grateful for my life jacket, I screamed and gripped the plastic handle on the raft until we reached the muddy bank downriver. I stepped onto the shore and dumped water from my purse as my husband helped me wring out the hem of my soaked dress. We enjoyed a good laugh, even though the trip had not turned out as advertised.

Unlike the tour brochure, which clearly left out a key detail about the trip, Jesus explicitly warned His disciples that rough waters were ahead. He told them that they’d be persecuted and martyred and that He would die and be resurrected. He also guaranteed His trustworthiness, affirming that He would guide them toward undeniable triumph and everlasting hope (JOHN 16:16–33).

Although it would be nice if life were easier when we follow Jesus, He made it clear that His disciples would have troubles. But He promised to be with us. Trials won’t define, limit, or destroy God’s plan for us, because Jesus’s resurrection has already propelled us to eternal victory. - XOCHITL DIXON

“사랑스러워!”

“사랑스러워!”

어느 날 아침 나갈 준비를 하던 딸아이가 이렇게 신이 나서 소리쳤습니다. 영문을 모르는 나에게 아이는 사촌으로부터 물려받은 셔츠를 가리키며 보여주는데 앞면에 “사랑스러워”라고 크게 쓰여 있었습니다. 내가 아이를 꼭 껴안아주자 아이는 기쁨이 가득한 웃음을 지었습니다. 내가 “넌 진짜 사랑스러워!”라고 되풀이했더니 아이는 더 없이 크게 웃으며 그 말을 되풀이하면서 뛰어나갔습니다.

나는 결코 완벽한 아버지는 아닙니다. 그러나 그 순간만큼은 완벽했습니다. 서로의 마음이 자연스럽고 아름답게 오가던 그 시간, 나는 조건 없는 사랑을 받으면 사람이 어떤 모습이 되는지를 딸의 활짝 핀 얼굴에서 보았습니다. 그것은 기쁨을 보여주는 한 장의 그림 같았습니다. 아이는 셔츠에 있는 그 말이 아빠가 자기를 생각하는 것과 완전히 같다는 것을 알았습니다.

하나님 아버지께서 우리를 무한히 사랑하신다는 것을 우리 중 얼마나 많은 사람이 마음 속 깊이 알고 있을까요? 우리는 때로 그 사실을 받아들이기가 어렵습니다. 이스라엘 백성이 그랬습니다. 그들은 하나님이 더 이상 그들을 사랑하지 않기 때문에 시련을 겪는 것이 아닌가 하고 의심했습니다. 그러나 예레미야 31장 3절에서 선지자는 “내가 영원한 사랑으로 너희를 사랑한다”고 하나님이 예전에 하신 말씀을 그들에게 상기시킵니다. 우리도 그런 무조건적인 사랑을 받기를 갈망하면서도 우리가 겪는 상처나 절망, 실수들 때문에 스스로 사랑받지 못할 존재라고 느낍니다. 그러나 하나님은 완벽하신 아버지의 두 팔을 활짝 펴 우리에게 그의 사랑을 경험하고 그 사랑 안에서 안식하라고 부르십니다.

“Lovable!”

“Lovable!”

That exclamation came from my daughter as she got ready one morning. I didn’t know what she meant. Then she tapped her shirt, a hand-me-down from a cousin. Across the front was that word: “Lovable.” I gave her a big hug, and she smiled with pure joy. “You are lovable!” I echoed. Her smile grew even bigger, if that was possible, as she skipped away, repeating the word over and over again.

I’m hardly a perfect father. But that moment was perfect. In that spontaneous, beautiful interaction, I glimpsed in my girl’s radiant face what receiving unconditional love looked like: It was a portrait of delight. She knew the word on her shirt corresponded completely with how her daddy felt about her.

How many of us know in our hearts that we are loved by a Father whose affection for us is limitless? Sometimes we struggle with this truth. The Israelites did. They wondered if their trials meant God no longer loved them. But in Jeremiah 31:3, the prophet reminds them of what God said in the past: “I have loved you with an everlasting love.” We too long for such unconditional love. Yet the wounds, disappointments, and mistakes we experience can make us feel anything but lovable. But God opens His arms—the arms of a perfect Father—and invites us to experience and rest in His love. - ADAM HOLZ

비판을 잠재우기

나는 우리 지역사회의 연례행사 준비 팀에서 일합니다. 우리는 행사의 성공을 위해 11개월 동안 많은 부분을 세세하게 계획합니다. 날짜와 장소를 정하고 입장료 가격을 정합니다. 음식을 공급할 업체들부터 음향 기사에 이르기까지 모든 것을 선정합니다. 행사 날짜가 다가오면 문의처로 오는 질문들에 답하고 어떻게 진행하는지를 알려줍니다. 행사가 끝나면 참가자들의 의견을 듣습니다. 좋은 말도 있고 듣기 거북한 말도 있습니다. 우리 팀은 참가자들로부터 너무나 좋았다는 말뿐 아니라 불만의 소리들도 듣습니다. 부정적인 평가를 들으면 낙심이 되고 때로는 포기하고 싶은 마음도 생깁니다.

느헤미야도 예루살렘 성벽을 재건하는 팀을 이끌면서 비난을 받았습니다. 사람들은 실제로 느헤미야와 그와 함께 일하는 사람들에게 “[너의] 돌 성벽은 여우가 올라가도 곧 무너지리라”(느헤미야 4:3)라고 하며 조롱했습니다. 비난에 대응하는 느헤미야의 모습을 보며 나는 내가 받는 비난을 다루는 데 도움을 받습니다. 그는 사람들의 말에 낙담하거나 반박하려 하지 않고 하나님께로 향하여 도움을 구했습니다. 직접 대응하는 것이 아니라 하나님께서 그의 백성들이 당한 처지를 들으시고 지켜달라고 간구했습니다(4절). 느헤미야와 동역자들은 모든 염려를 하나님께 맡겨드리고 “마음 들여”(6절) 꾸준히 성벽 작업을 계속했습니다.

우리는 일을 하다가 비판을 받아도 거기에 구애받지 말아야 함을 느헤미야에게서 배웁니다. 비판 받고 조롱당할때 사람들에게 상처나 분노로 대응하지 말고 하나님께 기도로 간구하여, 낙담하지 말고 온 마음을 다해 일을 계속해 나갈 수 있게 지켜달라고 기도하면 됩니다.

Quieting the Critic

I work with a team to put on an annual community event. We spend eleven months plotting many details to ensure the event’s success. We choose the date and venue. We set ticket prices. We select everything from food vendors to sound technicians. As the event approaches, we answer public questions and provide directions. Afterward we collect feedback. Some good. Some that is hard to hear. Our team hears excitement from attendees and also fields complaints. The negative feedback can be discouraging and sometimes tempts us to give up.

Nehemiah had critics too as he led a team to rebuild the wall of Jerusalem. They actually mocked Nehemiah and those working alongside him saying, “Even a fox climbing up on it would break down [your] wall of stones” (NEHEMIAH 4:3). His response to the critics helps me handle my own: Instead of feeling dejected or trying to refute their comments, he turned to God for help. Instead of responding directly, he asked God to hear the way His people were being treated and to defend them (V 4). After entrusting those concerns to God, he and his co-laborers continued to work steadily on the wall “with all their heart” (V 6).

We can learn from Nehemiah not to be distracted by criticism of our work. When we’re criticized or mocked, instead of responding to our critics out of hurt or anger, we can prayerfully ask God to defend us from discouragement so we can continue with a whole heart. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

겸손한 사랑

젊은 시절 벤자민 프랭클린은 인생을 살아가면서 성취하고 싶은 열두 가지 덕목을 만들었습니다. 그리고 그 목록을 친구에게 보여주자 친구는 거기에 “겸손”을 더하라고 권해주었습니다. 프랭클린은 그 생각이 마음에 들었습니다. 그는 그 후에 목록의 각 항목마다 도움이 될 만한 지침들을 추가했습니다. 프랭클린은 겸손을 위한 지침으로 예수님을 자기가 닮아야할 본보기로 세웠습니다.

예수님은 우리에게 진정한 겸손의 본이 되십니다. 성경은 말합니다. “너희 안에 이 마음을 품으라 곧 그리스도 예수의 마음이니 그는 근본 하나님의 본체시나 하나님과 동등 됨을 취할 것으로 여기지 아니하시고 오히려 자기를 비워 종의 형체를 가지사” (빌립보서 2:5-7).

예수님은 세상에서 가장 큰 겸손을 보여주셨습니다. 하나님 아버지와 영원히 함께 하시는 그분은 사랑으로 십자가에 달려 죽으심으로 누구든지 주님을 영접하는 자는 주님이 임재하시는 기쁜 그곳으로 오게 하십니다.

우리가 다른 사람들을 섬김으로 하나님 아버지를 섬기려 할 때 그것은 예수님의 겸손을 따라 하는 것입니다. 예수님의 온유를 따라 할 때 우리는 다른 사람들을 돌보기 위해 자신을 내려놓는 것이 얼마나 아름다운 것인지를 알게 됩니다. “내가 먼저”로 가득한 이 세상에서 겸손을 추구하는 것은 쉬운 일이 아닙니다. 그러나 구주의 사랑 안에 안전히 거하면 주님께서 그분을 따라가는데 필요한 모든 것을 우리에게 주실 것입니다.

Humble Love

When Benjamin Franklin was a young man he made a list of twelve virtues he desired to grow in over the course of his life. He showed it to a friend, who suggested he add “humility” to it. Franklin liked the idea. He then added some guidelines to help him with each item on the list. Among Franklin’s thoughts about humility, he held up Jesus as an example to emulate.

Jesus shows us the ultimate example of humility. God’s Word tells us, “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant” (PHILIPPIANS 2:5–7).

Jesus demonstrated the greatest humility of all. Though eternally with the Father, He chose to bend beneath a cross in love so that through His death He might lift any who receive Him into the joy of His presence.

We imitate Jesus’s humility when we seek to serve our heavenly Father by serving others. Jesus’s kindness helps us catch a breathtaking glimpse of the beauty of setting ourselves aside to attend to others’ needs. Aiming for humility isn’t easy in our “me first” world. But as we rest securely in our Savior’s love, He will give us everything we need to follow Him. - JAMES BANKS

이름을 부르심

시청자들의 관심을 끌어 반응을 가장 잘 일으키는 단어는 바로 그들 자신의 이름이라고 광고주들이 결론지었습니다. 그래서 영국의 한 텔레비전 방송은 개인 이름으로 보내는 광고들을 온라인 스트리밍 서비스로 시작했습니다.

텔레비전에서 자기의 이름이 들리면 좋을지 모르지만, 나를 사랑하는 누군가가 나의 이름을 부를 때 느끼는 그런 친근감이 없다면 별 의미가 없을 것입니다.

막달라 마리아는 십자가에 못 박히신 예수님의 몸을 뉘였던 그 무덤에서 예수님이 자기의 이름을 부르실 때(요한복음 20:16) 정신이 번쩍 들었습니다. 그 한마디에 그녀는 자기가 사랑하고 따르던 선생님이라는 것을 알고 예수님을 돌아보았습니다. 나는 믿어지지 않는 광경에 기쁨이 넘쳤을 그 모습을 상상해봅니다. 마리아는 자기 이름을 다정하게 부르시는 예수님의 음성을 들었기 때문에 자기를 완벽하게 아셨던 그분이 죽지 않고 살아 계시다는 것을 의심 없이 받아들일 수 있었습니다.

마리아는 그렇게 예수님과 그녀만의 특별한 순간을 가졌지만, 우리도 한 사람 한 사람 개별적으로 하나님이 사랑하십니다. 예수님은 마리아에게 하나님 아버지께로 올라간다고 말씀하셨지만(17절), 그전에 예수님은 제자들에게 그들을 홀로 두지 않겠다고 말씀하셨습니다 (요한복음 14:15-18). 하나님은 성령님을 보내셔서 그의 자녀들 안에 거하며 살도록 하셨습니다(사도행전 2:1-13 참조).

하나님의 이야기는 변하지 않습니다. 그때나 지금이나 하나님은 사랑하는 자들을 아십니다(요한복음 10:14-15 참조). 하나님은 우리의 이름으로 우리를 부르십니다.

Called by Name

Advertisers have concluded that the most attention-grabbing word that viewers react to is their own name. Thus a television channel in the UK has introduced personalized advertisements with their online streaming services.

We might enjoy hearing our name on television, but it doesn’t mean much without the intimacy that comes when someone who loves us says our name.

Mary Magdalene’s attention was arrested when, at the tomb where Jesus’s body had been laid after He was crucified on the cross, He spoke her name (JOHN 20:16). With that single word, she turned in recognition to the Teacher whom she loved and followed, I imagine with a rush of disbelief and joy. The familiarity with which He spoke her name confirmed for her beyond a doubt that the One who’d known her perfectly was alive and not dead.

Although Mary shared a unique and special moment with Jesus, we too are personally loved by God. Jesus told Mary that He would ascend to His Father (V 17), but He had also told His disciples that He would not leave them alone (JOHN 14:15–18). God would send the Holy Spirit to live and dwell in His children (SEE ACTS 2:1–13).

God’s story doesn’t change. Whether then or now, He knows those whom He loves (SEE JOHN 10:14–15). He calls us by name. - AMY BOUCHER PYE
