이름을 부르심
시청자들의 관심을 끌어 반응을 가장 잘 일으키는 단어는 바로 그들 자신의 이름이라고 광고주들이 결론지었습니다. 그래서 영국의 한 텔레비전 방송은 개인 이름으로 보내는 광고들을 온라인 스트리밍 서비스로 시작했습니다.
텔레비전에서 자기의 이름이 들리면 좋을지 모르지만, 나를 사랑하는 누군가가 나의 이름을 부를 때 느끼는 그런 친근감이 없다면 별 의미가 없을 것입니다.
막달라 마리아는 십자가에 못 박히신 예수님의 몸을 뉘였던 그 무덤에서 예수님이 자기의 이름을 부르실 때(요한복음 20:16) 정신이 번쩍 들었습니다. 그 한마디에 그녀는 자기가 사랑하고 따르던 선생님이라는 것을 알고 예수님을 돌아보았습니다. 나는 믿어지지 않는 광경에 기쁨이 넘쳤을 그 모습을 상상해봅니다. 마리아는 자기 이름을 다정하게 부르시는 예수님의 음성을 들었기 때문에 자기를 완벽하게 아셨던 그분이 죽지 않고 살아 계시다는 것을 의심 없이 받아들일 수 있었습니다.
마리아는 그렇게 예수님과 그녀만의 특별한 순간을 가졌지만, 우리도 한 사람 한 사람 개별적으로 하나님이 사랑하십니다. 예수님은 마리아에게 하나님 아버지께로 올라간다고 말씀하셨지만(17절), 그전에 예수님은 제자들에게 그들을 홀로 두지 않겠다고 말씀하셨습니다 (요한복음 14:15-18). 하나님은 성령님을 보내셔서 그의 자녀들 안에 거하며 살도록 하셨습니다(사도행전 2:1-13 참조).
하나님의 이야기는 변하지 않습니다. 그때나 지금이나 하나님은 사랑하는 자들을 아십니다(요한복음 10:14-15 참조). 하나님은 우리의 이름으로 우리를 부르십니다.

Advertisers have concluded that the most attention-grabbing word that viewers react to is their own name. Thus a television channel in the UK has introduced personalized advertisements with their online streaming services.
We might enjoy hearing our name on television, but it doesn’t mean much without the intimacy that comes when someone who loves us says our name.
Mary Magdalene’s attention was arrested when, at the tomb where Jesus’s body had been laid after He was crucified on the cross, He spoke her name (JOHN 20:16). With that single word, she turned in recognition to the Teacher whom she loved and followed, I imagine with a rush of disbelief and joy. The familiarity with which He spoke her name confirmed for her beyond a doubt that the One who’d known her perfectly was alive and not dead.
Although Mary shared a unique and special moment with Jesus, we too are personally loved by God. Jesus told Mary that He would ascend to His Father (V 17), but He had also told His disciples that He would not leave them alone (JOHN 14:15–18). God would send the Holy Spirit to live and dwell in His children (SEE ACTS 2:1–13).
God’s story doesn’t change. Whether then or now, He knows those whom He loves (SEE JOHN 10:14–15). He calls us by name. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

아버지의 충고
나는 편집 일을 하던 직장에서 정리해고를 당한 후 하나님께 새 직장을 찾게 해달라고 기도했습니다. 그러나 아는 사람들에게 연락을 취하고 지원서를 쓰고 모두 해봤지만 몇 주일이 지나도 아무 소식이 없었습니다. 마침내 “하나님, 저에게 직장이 얼마나 중요한지를 모르시나요?”하며 불만을 나타내기 시작했습니다. 나는 하나님이 기도에 응답하지 않으신다고 생각하고 팔짱을 끼고서 그렇게 하나님께 항의한 것입니다.
하나님의 약속을 믿어야 한다고 종종 말씀하시던 아버지는 내가 직장 구하는 이야기를 들으시고 “너도 이젠 하나님 말씀을 좀 믿었으면 좋겠구나.”라고 말씀하셨습니다.

Advice from My Father
After being laid off from an editorial job, I prayed, asking for God to help me find a new one. But when weeks went by and nothing came of my attempts at networking and filling out applications, I began to pout. “Don’t You know how important it is that I have a job?” I asked God, my arms folded in protest at my seemingly unanswered prayer.
When I talked to my father, who had often reminded me about believing God’s promises, about my job situation, he said, “I want you to get to the point where you trust what God says.”
My father’s advice reminds me of Proverbs 3, which includes wise advice from a parent to a beloved child. This familiar passage was especially applicable to my situation: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight” (PROVERBS 3:5–6). To “make . . . paths straight” means God will guide us toward His goals for our growth. His ultimate goal is that I become more like Him.
This does not mean that the paths He chooses will be easy. But I can choose to trust that His direction and timing are ultimately for my good.
Are you waiting on God for an answer? Choose to draw near to Him and trust that He will guide you. - LINDA WASHINGTON

이것은 우리의 친구 스티브가 암 진단을 받고 얼마 동안 교회에 나올 수 없다는 것을 알고 나서 우리에게 한 질문 중 하나입니다. 스티브는 누구에게나 친절한 인사로, 따뜻한 악수로, 때로는 “거룩한 포옹”으로 사람들을 한 식구처럼 느끼게 해주었습니다. 이것은 로마서 16장 16절에서 “거룩하게 입맞춤으로 서로 문안하라”고 하신 말씀을 실천한 것이었습니다.

A Warm Welcome
“Who will hug everybody?”
That was one of the questions our friend Steve asked after he got the news that he had cancer and realized he would be away from our church for a while. Steve is the kind of man who makes everyone feel welcome—with a friendly greeting, a warm handshake, and even a “holy hug” for some—to adapt an application from Romans 16:16, which says, “Greet one another with a holy kiss.”
And now, as we pray for Steve that God will heal him, he is concerned that as he goes through surgery and treatment—and is away from our church for a time—we will miss out on those welcoming greetings.
Perhaps not all of us are cut out to greet one another as openly as Steve does, but his example of caring for people is a good reminder to us. Notice that Peter says to “offer hospitality to one another without grumbling,” or in a way that centers on love (1 PETER 4:9; SEE PHILIPPIANS 2:14). While first-century hospitality included offering accommodations to travelers—even that always starts with a welcoming greeting.
As we interact with others in love, whether with a hug or just a friendly smile, we do so “that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ” (1 PETER 4:11). - DAVE BRANON

완벽한 아버지
사람들로 북적이는 상점의 통로에 서서 아버지의 날에 꼭 맞는 카드를 고르려고 고심하고 있었습니다. 아버지와 나는 여러 해 동안 연락 없이 지내다가 화해를 하긴 했지만, 여전히 가깝게 느껴지지가 않았습니다.
내 옆의 한 여성이 불만스레 중얼거리며 읽었던 카드를 다시 진열대에 꽂아 넣었습니다. “사이가 별로 좋지 않은 아버지이지만 그래도 도리를 지키려고 하는데, 왜 그런 사람에게 맞는 카드는 안 만드는지 모르겠네요.”
내가 대답하기도 전에 급하게 나가 버리는 그 여인을 위해 나는 기도했습니다. 오직 하나님만이 완전한 아버지가 되심을 확인시켜주신 것을 감사하며 아버지와 나의 관계를 더 가깝게 해달라고 기도했습니다.
나는 하늘에 계신 나의 아버지와도 더 깊고 친밀한 관계를 갖고 싶습니다. 하나님의 변함없는 임재와 능력과 보호하심에 대해 다윗이 가졌던 그 확신을 나도 갖고 싶습니다(시편 27:1-6).
다윗은 도와달라고 부르짖을 때 하나님이 응답하실 것을 기대했습니다(7-9절). 육신의 부모는 자식을 거부하고 버리고 무관심할 수 있으나, 하나님은 무조건적으로 받아 신다고 다윗은 선포했습니다 (10절). 그는 하나님의 선하심을 믿으며 살았습니다(11-13절). 다윗도 우리처럼 때로 어려움을 겪었으나 성령께서 하나님을 믿고 의지하며 인내할 수 있도록 그를 도와주셨습니다(14절).
우리는 이 땅에 살면서 어려운 관계에 처할 수 있습니다. 그러나 사람은 부족하고 실망시키고 상처를 줄지라도, 우리는 완전하신 한 분 아버지로부터 온전한 사랑과 보호를 받고 있습니다.

The Perfect Father
Standing in the crowded store aisle, I struggled to find the perfect Father’s Day card. Although we had reconciled after years of a strained connection, I had never felt close to my dad.
The woman next to me groaned and shoved the card she’d been reading back into the display. “Why can’t they make cards for people who don’t have good relationships with their fathers, but are trying to do the right thing?”
She stormed off before I could respond, so I prayed for her. Thanking God for affirming only He could be a perfect Father, I asked Him to strengthen my relationship with my dad.
I long for deeper intimacy with my heavenly Father too. I want David’s confidence in God’s constant presence, power, and protection (PSALM 27:1–6).
When David cried out for help, he expected God’s answers (VV 7–9). Though earthly parents could reject, abandon, or neglect their children, David declared God’s unconditional acceptance (V 10). He lived with assurance in the Lord’s goodness (VV 11–13). Like most of us, David sometimes struggled, but the Holy Spirit helped him persevere in trust and dependence on the Lord (V 14).
We will encounter difficult relationships on this side of eternity. But even when people fall short, fail us, or hurt us, we’re still completely loved and protected by the only Perfect Father. - XOCHITL DIXON

The woman next to me groaned and shoved the card she’d been reading back into the display. “Why can’t they make cards for people who don’t have good relationships with their fathers, but are trying to do the right thing?”
She stormed off before I could respond, so I prayed for her. Thanking God for affirming only He could be a perfect Father, I asked Him to strengthen my relationship with my dad.
I long for deeper intimacy with my heavenly Father too. I want David’s confidence in God’s constant presence, power, and protection (PSALM 27:1–6).
When David cried out for help, he expected God’s answers (VV 7–9). Though earthly parents could reject, abandon, or neglect their children, David declared God’s unconditional acceptance (V 10). He lived with assurance in the Lord’s goodness (VV 11–13). Like most of us, David sometimes struggled, but the Holy Spirit helped him persevere in trust and dependence on the Lord (V 14).
We will encounter difficult relationships on this side of eternity. But even when people fall short, fail us, or hurt us, we’re still completely loved and protected by the only Perfect Father. - XOCHITL DIXON

얼굴
우리 손녀 사라가 아주 어렸을 때 사람이 죽으면 어떻게 되는지에 대해 이렇게 말했습니다. “우리 몸은 여기 남고 얼굴만 천국에 가는 거예요. 거기 가면 새 몸을 얻고 얼굴은 지금 그대로예요.”
우리의 영원한 상태에 대한 사라의 생각은 물론 어린아이의 생각이지만 이 아이는 아주 중요한 진리를 말했습니다. 어떤 면에서 우리 얼굴은 보이지 않는 영혼의 모습을 나타내 보여주고 있기 때문입니다.
우리 어머니는 화난 얼굴을 하면 언젠가는 그 표정이 얼굴에 새겨진다고 자주 말씀하셨습니다. 어머니는 본인이 생각하는 것보다 더 지혜로운 분이셨습니다. 걱정으로 찌푸린 눈썹, 화난 입술, 비웃는 듯한 눈빛 같은 표정들은 불행한 영혼의 모습을 보여주는 것일 수도 있습니다. 이와는 반대로 친절한 눈길이나 온화한 표정, 따뜻하게 맞아주는 미소는 비록 얼굴에 주름살이나 티나 다른 흉터가 있어도 변화된 내면의 모습을 보여주는 표가 됩니다.

Faces
When our granddaughter Sarah was very young, she explained to me what happens when you die: “Only your face goes to heaven, not your body. You get a new body, but keep the same face.”
Sarah’s concept of our eternal state was a child’s under- standing, of course, but she did grasp an essential truth. In a sense, our faces are a visible reflection of the invisible soul.
My mother used to say that an angry look might someday freeze on my face. She was wiser than she knew. A worried brow, an angry set to our mouths, a sly look in our eyes may reveal a miserable soul. On the other hand, kind eyes, a gentle look, a warm and welcoming smile—despite wrinkles, blemishes, and other disfigurements become the marks of inner transformation.
We can’t do much about the faces we were born with, but we can do something about the kind of person we’re growing into. We can pray for humility, patience, kindness, tolerance, gratefulness, forgiveness, peace, and love (GALATIANS 5:22–26).
By God’s grace, and in His time, may you and I grow toward an inner resemblance to our Lord, a likeness reflected in a kind, old face. Thus, as English poet John Donne (1572–1631) said, age becomes “loveliest at the latest day.” - DAVID H. ROPER

진리로
오래 전에 서로 다른 나라 출신의 두 사람이 하는 결혼식에 참석했습니다. 이렇게 문화가 합쳐지는 것은 아름다운 일일 수 있지만, 그 결혼식은 기독교 의식에다 여러 신을 섬기는 신앙에서 나온 의식이 한데 섞여 있었습니다.
스바냐 선지자는 유일하신 참 하나님을 믿는 신앙과 다른 종교를 섞는 것(가끔 혼합주의라고 불립니다)을 분명히 죄라고 했습니다. 유다 백성은 참 하나님께 경배를 드리면서도 동시에 말감이라는 신을 의지했습니다(스바냐 1:5). 스바냐는 그들이 이방 문화를 받아들이는 것을 묘사하며(8절) 이 때문에 하나님이 유다 백성을 그들의 땅에서 쫓아낼 것이라고 경고하였습니다.
그럼에도 하나님은 그의 백성을 사랑하지 않으신 적이 없습니다. 하나님의 징계는 백성을 그에게로 돌아오게 하려는 것이었습니다. 그래서 스바냐는 유다 백성들에게 “공의와 겸손을 구하라”(2:3)고 했습니다. 그 후에 하나님은 따뜻한 말로 장래에 그들을 회복시키실 것이라 약속하셨습니다. “내가 그 때에 너희를 이끌고 그 때에 너희를 모을지라”(3:20).
내가 갔던 결혼식에서처럼 분명히 드러나 보이는 혼합주의는 비판하기가 쉽습니다. 그러나 사실 우리 모두는 하나님의 진리와 이 세상 문화의 가치를 대수롭지 않게 섞어가며 살고 있습니다. 우리는 성령님의 도우심으로 우리의 믿음이 하나님의 진리의 말씀에 맞는지 시험해보고 그 진리를 확신과 사랑의 마음으로 지켜야 합니다. 우리 하나님 아버지는 성령과 진리로 예배드리는 사람은 누구나 다 따뜻하게 맞아주십니다 (요한복음 4:23-24 참조).

And in Truth
Years ago, I attended a wedding where two people from different countries got married. Such a blending of cultures can be beautiful, but this ceremony included Christian traditions mixed with rituals from a faith that worshiped many gods.
Zephaniah the prophet pointedly condemned the mixing of other religions with faith in the one true God (sometimes called syncretism). Judah had become a people who bowed in worship to the true God but who also relied on the god Molek (ZEPHANIAH 1:5). Zephaniah described their adoption of pagan culture (V 8) and warned that as a result God would drive the people of Judah from their homeland.
Yet God never stopped loving His people. His judgment was to show them their need to turn to Him. So Zephaniah encouraged Judah to “Seek righteousness, seek humility” (2:3). Then the Lord gave them tender words promising future restoration: “At that time I will gather you; at that time I will bring you home” (3:20).
It’s easy to condemn examples of obvious syncretism like the wedding I attended. But in reality, all of us easily blend God’s truth with the assumptions of our culture. We need the Holy Spirit’s guidance to test our beliefs against the truth of God’s Word and then to stand for that truth confidently and lovingly. Our Father warmly embraces anyone who worships Him in the Spirit and in truth (SEE JOHN 4:23–24). - TIM GUSTAFSON

모두 함께
고대에 도시 성벽이 무너진다는 것은 전쟁에 패하여 그 백성이 위험에 처하고 수치를 당하게 됐다는 것을 의미했습니다. 그래서 유대인들이 예루살렘 성벽을 다시 건축했던 것입니다. 그런데 어떻게 건축했을까요? 느헤미야 3장에 잘 묘사되어 있는 대로 모두가 나서서 함께 일했습니다.
느헤미야 3장을 처음 얼핏 보면 성전을 재건하는 동안 누가 무엇을 했는지를 기록한 따분한 이야기처럼 보입니다. 그러나 자세히 읽어보면 사람들이 어떻게 함께 일했는지를 알 수 있습니다. 제사장들은 통치자들과 함께 일했고, 대장장이들과 유향을 제조하는 사람들도 함께 도왔습니다. 인근 마을에 사는 사람들이 와서 도왔고, 자기 집 건너편에서 성벽을 수리한 사람들도 있었습니다. 살룸의 딸들은 남자들과 함께 일을 했고(3:12), 드고아 사람들처럼 두 몫의 성벽을 고친 사람들도 있었습니다(5,27절).
3장에는 두 가지 사실이 눈에 띄는데, 첫째는 그들 모두 한 가지 공통의 목표를 위해 일을 했다는 것이고, 둘째는 다른 사람에 비해 일을 얼마나 했느냐와 상관없이 모든 사람이 그들이 한 일로 인정을 받았다는 것입니다.
오늘날 우리는 무너진 가정들과 망가진 사회를 봅니다. 그러나 예수님은 우리의 삶을 변화시켜 하나님의 나라를 세우기 위해 오셨습니다. 우리는 다른 사람들에게 예수님 안에 소망과 새 생명이 있다는 것을 보여주어 우리 이웃들을 재건하는 것을 도와줄 수 있습니다. 누구에게나 할 일이 있습니다. 그러므로 다 함께 나서서 크든 작든 각자가 할 수 있는 일을 해서 사람들이 예수님을 발견할 수 있는 사랑의 공동체를 건설하도록 합시다.

Side by Side
In ancient times, a city with broken walls revealed a defeated people, exposed to danger and shame. That is why the Jews rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem. How? By working side by side, an expression that can well describe Nehemiah 3.
At first glance, chapter 3 might appear to be a boring account of who did what in the reconstruction. However, a closer look highlights how people worked together. Priests were working alongside rulers. Perfume-makers were helping as well as goldsmiths. There were some who lived in nearby towns and came to give a hand. Others made repairs opposite their houses. Shallum’s daughters, for example, worked alongside the men (3:12), and some people repaired two sections, like the men of Tekoa (vv. 5, 27).
Two things stand out from this chapter. First, they all worked together for a common goal. Second, all of them are commended for being part of the work, not for how much or little they did as compared to others.
Today we see damaged families and a broken society. But Jesus came to build the kingdom of God through the transformation of lives. We can help to rebuild our neighborhoods by showing others they can find hope and new life in Jesus. All of us have something to do. So let us work side by side and do our part—whether big or small—to create a community of love where people can find Jesus. - KEILA OCHOA

한 맹인의 간구
몇 년 전 여행을 하다가 일행 중 한 사람이 내가 먼데 있는 것이 잘 안 보여 고생하는 것을 알고는 아주 단순한 일을 했는데, 그것이 내 삶을 바꾸어놓았습니다. 그가 자신의 안경을 벗어서 “한번 써보세요”라고 한 것입니다. 그의 안경을 쓰는 순간 희미했던 나의 시야가 놀랍게도 아주 깨끗해졌습니다. 결국 나는 안과에 가서 시력 검사를 하고 안경을 맞추어 쓰게 되었습니다.
오늘의 말씀인 누가복음 18장에는 날 때부터 보지 못하고 캄캄한 세상에서 구걸하며 살아야 했던 한 남자의 이야기가 나옵니다. 널리 알려진 선생님이자 기적을 행하신다는 예수님에 관한 소식은 이 눈 먼 걸인의 귀에까지 전해졌습니다. 그래서 예수님이 그가 앉아 있는 곳을 지난다는 것을 알게 된 맹인의 가슴은 희망의 불길로 타올랐습니다. 그는 외쳤습니다. “다윗의 자손 예수여 나를 불쌍히 여기소서”(38절). 비록 육신의 눈으로는 볼 수 없어도 영적인 눈으로 예수님이 진정 누구이신가를 알았던 그는 예수님이 자기 문제를 해결해주실 것을 믿었고, 이런 믿음을 가지고 더욱 크게 소리쳤습니다. “다윗의 자손이여 나를 불쌍히 여기소서” (39절). 그 결과 어떻게 되었습니까? 안 보이던 눈이 치유되고 볼 수 있게 됨으로 말미암아 살기 위해 구걸하던 그가 하나님께 영광을 돌리게 되었습니다(43절).
살면서 캄캄한 순간이나 캄캄한 시기를 지날 때 당신은 어디에 의지합니까? 무엇에게, 누구에게 외칩니까? 눈이 잘 안 보이면 안경을 쓰면 됩니다. 그러나 영적으로 캄캄한 사람을 빛으로 이끌어내는 것은 바로 하나님의 아들 예수님의 사랑의 손길입니다.

오늘의 말씀인 누가복음 18장에는 날 때부터 보지 못하고 캄캄한 세상에서 구걸하며 살아야 했던 한 남자의 이야기가 나옵니다. 널리 알려진 선생님이자 기적을 행하신다는 예수님에 관한 소식은 이 눈 먼 걸인의 귀에까지 전해졌습니다. 그래서 예수님이 그가 앉아 있는 곳을 지난다는 것을 알게 된 맹인의 가슴은 희망의 불길로 타올랐습니다. 그는 외쳤습니다. “다윗의 자손 예수여 나를 불쌍히 여기소서”(38절). 비록 육신의 눈으로는 볼 수 없어도 영적인 눈으로 예수님이 진정 누구이신가를 알았던 그는 예수님이 자기 문제를 해결해주실 것을 믿었고, 이런 믿음을 가지고 더욱 크게 소리쳤습니다. “다윗의 자손이여 나를 불쌍히 여기소서” (39절). 그 결과 어떻게 되었습니까? 안 보이던 눈이 치유되고 볼 수 있게 됨으로 말미암아 살기 위해 구걸하던 그가 하나님께 영광을 돌리게 되었습니다(43절).
살면서 캄캄한 순간이나 캄캄한 시기를 지날 때 당신은 어디에 의지합니까? 무엇에게, 누구에게 외칩니까? 눈이 잘 안 보이면 안경을 쓰면 됩니다. 그러나 영적으로 캄캄한 사람을 빛으로 이끌어내는 것은 바로 하나님의 아들 예수님의 사랑의 손길입니다.

A Blind Man’s Plea
Some years ago a traveling companion noticed I was straining to see objects at a distance. What he did next was simple but life changing. He took off his glasses and said, “Try these.” When I put his glasses on, surprisingly my blurred vision cleared up. Eventually I went to an optometrist who prescribed glasses to correct my vision problem.
Today’s reading in Luke 18 features a man with no vision at all, and living in total darkness had forced him to beg for a living. News about Jesus, the popular teacher and miracle worker, had reached the blind beggar’s ears. So when Jesus’s travel route took Him by where the blind man was sitting, hope was ignited in his heart. “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” (V 38) he called. Though without sight physically, the man possessed spiritual insight into Jesus’s true identity and faith in Him to meet his need. Compelled by this faith, “He shouted all the more, ‘Son of David, have mercy on me!’” (V 39). The result? His blindness was banished, and he went from begging for his living to blessing God because he could see (V 43).
In moments or seasons of darkness, where do you turn? Upon what or to whom do you call? Eyeglass prescriptions help improve vision, but it’s the merciful touch of Jesus, God’s Son, that brings people from spiritual darkness to light. - ARTHUR JACKSON

내 눈을 열어주소서
이스탄불의 아름다운 코라 교회에 처음 갔을 때에는 천장에 있는 비잔틴 프레스코 화법의 그림과 모자이크 속에 성경 이야기 몇 개가 묘사되어 있다는 것을 알 수 있었지만 모르고 지나친 부분이 많이 있었습니다. 그러나 두 번째 갔을 때에는 안내해주는 사람이 있어서 전에 놓쳤던 부분들에 대해 자세한 설명을 듣고 금방 모든 것이 완전히 이해되었습니다. 예를 들어, 첫 번째 복도의 그림들은 누가복음에 기록된 예수님의 생애를 그린 것이었습니다.
성경을 읽을 때 때때로 우리는 기본적인 이야기들은 잘 이해합니다. 그러나 성경의 자세한 부분들을 잘 엮어서 하나의 완성된 이야기로 만들어주는 연결 역할은 누가 해줄까요? 물론 성경 주석과 참고서들이 있지만 우리에게는 누군가 우리의 눈을 열어 하나님의 놀라운 계시의 말씀을 보아서 알게 해주는 그런 안내자가 필요합니다. 우리의 안내자는 바로 이 “모든 것”을 우리에게 가르쳐주시는 성령님입니다(요한복음 14:26). 바울 사도는 “오직 성령께서 가르치신 것으로 영적인 일”을 설명한다고 기록하고 있습니다(고린도전서 2:13).
성경을 쓰신 분이 그 안의 놀라운 것들을 직접 우리에게 보여주신다니 얼마나 놀라운지요! 하나님은 우리에게 글로 기록된 성경을 주시고 계시로 보여주실 뿐만 아니라, 성경을 깨닫고 배우는 것도 도와주십니다. 그러므로 우리도 시편 기자처럼 이렇게 기도합시다. “내 눈을 열어서 주의 율법에서 놀라운 것을 보게 하소서”(시편 119:18).

Open My Eyes
The first time I went to the gorgeous Chora Church in Istanbul, I was able to figure out some Bible stories from the Byzantine frescos and mosaics on the ceiling. But there was much I missed. The second time, however, I had a guide. He pointed to all the details I had previously missed, and suddenly everything made perfect sense! The first aisle, for instance, depicted the life of Jesus as recorded in the gospel of Luke.
Sometimes when we read the Bible we understand the basic stories, but what about the connections—those details that weave Scripture into the one perfect story? We have Bible commentaries and study tools, yes, but we also need a guide—someone to open our eyes and help us see the wonders of God’s written revelation. Our guide is the Holy Spirit who teaches us “all things” (JOHN 14:26). Paul wrote that He explains “spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words” (1 CORINTHIANS 2:13).
How wonderful to have the Author of the Book to show us the wonders of it! God has not only given us His written Word and His revelation but He also helps us to understand it and learn from it. So let us pray with the psalmist, saying, “Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law” (PSALM 119:18). - KEILA OCHOA

우리 아버지는 58세에 돌아가셨습니다. 그 이후로 기일이 되면 나는 아버지를 생각하며 아버지가 내 삶에 끼치신 영향들을 되돌아봅니다. 이제 아버지와 함께 살아 온 날보다 아버지 없이 살아온 세월이 더 길다는 것을 알게 되니 나의 삶도 너무 짧다는 생각이 들기 시작했습니다.
생각해보면 우리는 과거 한 때에 있었던 사건과 그로 말미암은 감정들 때문에 힘들어하기도 합니다. 우리는 시계와 달력으로 시간을 재지만 그 때의 사건들로 시간을 기억합니다. 우리의 가장 깊은 마음속의 감정이 건드려지는 삶의 순간들마다 우리는 기쁨과 상실, 축복, 고통, 성공, 실패 같은 감정을 경험하게 됩니다.
성경은 “백성들아 시시로 그를 의지하고 그의 앞에 마음을 토하라 하나님은 우리의 피난처시로다”(시편 62:8) 라고 우리를 격려해줍니다. 하지만 이 확신에 찬 말씀은 편안함 가운데 나온 것이 아니었습니다. 다윗은 적들에게 포위된 상황에서 이것을 기록했습니다(3-4절). 그런 가운데에서도 그는 하나님의 변함없는 사랑 (12절)은 우리가 처하는 어떤 형편보다도 더 크다는 것을 상기시키면서 하나님 앞에서 조용히 기다렸습니다(1,5절).
무슨 일을 만나도 우리에게는 이런 확신이 있습니다. 우리 하나님이 우리와 함께 하시며 그분이 인생의 모든 순간에 우리를 넉넉히 인도해주십니다. 삶 가운데 엄청난 위협이 닥쳐와도 하나님은 정확한 시간에 우리를 도와주실 것입니다.

Clocks and Calendars
My father died at 58 years of age. Ever since then, I pause on the date he died to remember Dad and reflect on his influence in my life. When I realized I had lived more of life without my dad than with him, I began pondering the brevity of my own life.
On reflection, we may wrestle with both an event in time and the feelings it stirs within us. Though we measure time with clocks and calendars, we remember times because of events. In the moments of life that trigger our deepest emotions, we can experience joy, loss, blessing, pain, success, failure.
The Scriptures encourage us: “Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge” (PSALM 62:8). This confident statement did not occur in a time of ease. David wrote these words while surrounded by enemies (VV 3–4). Still, he waited quietly before God(vv. 1, 5) reminding us that God’s unfailing love (V 12) is greater than any of the times of struggle we may face.
In every event, we have this confidence: Our God stands with us, and He is more than adequate to carry us through all of life’s moments. When the times of life threaten to overwhelm us, His help will be right on time. - BILL CROWDER
