하나님이 안고 계심

어느 날 오후 언니와 조카들과의 점심식사가 끝날 때쯤 언니가 세 살 배기 애니카에게 낮잠을 잘 시간이라고 말했습니다. 놀란 얼굴로 “모니카 이모는 오늘 아직도 나를 안아주지 않았는데!” 라고 말하며 반대하는 아이의 눈에는 눈물이 그렁그렁 했습니다. 언니는 미소를 지으며 “알았어. 이모가 너를 먼저 안아줄 거야. 얼마나 안아줘야 해?” 하자, 애니카가 “5분” 하고 대답했습니다.

조카를 안고 있으면서, 내가 노력하지 않아도 사랑을 하고 사랑을 받는 것이 어떤 것인지를 계속 상기시켜주는 조카에게 고마운 생각이 들었습니다. 나는 우리가 신앙여정을 통해 우리가 상상할 수 있는 것보다 훨씬 더 풍성하게 하나님의 사랑을 경험하며 배운다는 사실을 때때로 잊어버린다고 생각합니다(에베소서 3:18). 우리가 그런 핵심을 놓치면, 예수님이 말씀하신 탕자의 비유에 나오는 형처럼 하나님이 이미 모든 것을 다 주셨는데도 하나님의 인정을 받기 위해 필사적으로 노력하는 우리의 모습을 발견하게 됩니다(누가복음 15:25-32).

시편 131편은 우리로 “어린 아이처럼 되고”(마태복음 18:3) 우리가 이해하지 못하는 것들에 대한 마음속의 다툼을 내려놓도록(시편 131:1) 도와주는 성경 속의 기도입니다. 우리는 주님과 함께 함으로써 평온한 곳으로 돌아가며(2절), 주님의 사랑 안에서 우리에게 필요한 소망을 찾고(3절), 엄마 품에 안긴 아이처럼 고요하고 평온할 수 있게 됩니다(2절).

아이들처럼 우리도 하나님의 사랑 안에서 쉼을 얻는 것을 배울 수 있다.

Held by God

As I was nearing the end of lunch with my sister and her children one afternoon, my sister told my three-year-old niece, Annica, it was time to get ready for her nap. Her face filled with alarm. “But Aunt Monica did not hold me yet today!” she objected, tears filling her eyes. My sister smiled. “Okay, she may hold you first—how long do you need?” “Five minutes,” she replied.

As I held my niece, I was grateful for how, without even trying, she constantly reminds me what it looks like to love and be loved. I think sometimes we forget that our faith journey is one of learning to experience love—God’s love—more fully than we can imagine (EPH. 3:18). When we lose that focus, we can find ourselves, like the older brother in Jesus’s parable of the prodigal son, trying desperately to win God’s approval while missing out on all He has already given us (LUKE 15:25–32).

Psalm 131 is one prayer in Scripture that can help us to “become like little children” (MATT. 18:3) and to let go of the battle in our mind over what we don’t understand (PS. 131:1). Instead, through time with Him we can return to a place of peace (V. 2), finding the hope we need (V. 3) in His love—as calm and quiet as if we were children again in our mothers’ arms (V. 2). - MONICA BRANDS

새 이름

마크 래버튼은 ‘이름대로 되다’라는 글에서 이름의 힘에 대해 이렇게 썼습니다. “어느 날 나를 ‘음악적인’ 사람이라고 불러준 음악가 친구가 내게 끼친 영향을 나는 지금도 느낄 수 있습니다. 어느 누구도 나를 그렇게 불러준 적이 없었습니다. 나는 악기를 연주할 줄도 모르고, 노래를 잘 하는 것도 아니었습니다. 그러나......그가 나를 알아주고 사랑해주고 있음을 느꼈습니다. [그 친구는] 참된 나의 모습을 알았고 인정해주었으며 평가해주었습니다.”

아마도 예수님이 이름을 새로 지어주셨을 때 시몬이 느낀 것도 이와 같지 않을까 생각됩니다. 안드레는 예수님이 메시아이심을 알고는 즉시 형제 시몬을 찾아 예수님 앞으로 데리고 왔습니다 (요한복음 1:41-42). 예수님은 그의 영혼을 깊이 들여다보시고, 시몬의 내면의 참된 모습을 알아보고 인정해주셨습니다. 주님은 그가 실패할 것과 문제를 일으키게 될 그의 급한 성격도 보셨지만, 그것보다도 교회의 지도자가 될 그의 잠재력을 먼저 보셨습니다. 예수님은 그를 게바라고 부르셨는데, 그것은 반석이라는 뜻을 지닌 베드로라는 이름의 아람어입니다(요한복음 1:42; 마태복음 16:18 참조).

A New Name

In the article “Leading by Naming,” Mark Labberton wrote about the power of a name. He said: “I can still feel the impact of a musical friend who one day called me ‘musical.’ No one had ever called me that. I didn’t really play an instrument. I was no soloist. Yet . . . I instantly felt known and loved. . . . [He] noticed, validated, and appreciated something deeply true about me.”

Perhaps this is what Simon felt when Jesus renamed him. After Andrew was convinced that Jesus was the Messiah, he immediately found his brother Simon and brought him to Jesus (JOHN 1:41–42). Jesus peered into his soul and validated and appreciated something deeply true about Simon. Yes, Jesus saw the failure and impetuous nature that would get him into trouble. But more than that He saw the potential of Simon to become a leader in the church. Jesus named him Cephas—Aramaic for Peter—a rock (JOHN 1:42; SEE MATT. 16:18).

And so it is with us. God sees our pride, anger, and lack of love for others, but He also knows who we are in Christ. He calls us justified and reconciled (ROM. 5:9–10); forgiven, holy, and beloved (COL. 2:13; 3:12); chosen and faithful (REV. 17:14). Remember how God sees you and seek to let that define who you are. - MARVIN WILLIAMS

선한 목자

남편과 함께 병실에 앉아 초조하게 기다리고 있었습니다. 우리 어린 아들이 눈 교정수술을 받고 있었는데, 초조하고 걱정이 되어 가슴이 울렁거렸습니다. 하나님께 기도하며 주님의 평안을 간구하려고 성경책을 대충 넘겨보고 있었는데, 이사야 40장이 생각나서 새롭게 내게 주시는 말씀이 없을까 하여 그곳의 익숙한 구절들을 읽어보았습니다.

말씀을 보다가, 주님은 “목자같이 양 떼를 먹이시며 어린 양을 그 팔로 모아 품에 안으시는”(11절) 분임을 상기시켜주는 아주 오래된 말씀을 숨을 죽이고 바라보았습니다. 바로 그 순간 두려움이 떠나갔고, 주님이 우리를 안으시고 인도하시며 보살피신다는 것을 깨닫게 되었습니다. 나는 조용히 속삭였습니다. ‘제게 필요한 것이 바로 이것이었습니다, 주님!’ 수술이 진행되는 동안, 그리고 그 이후에도 나는 하나님의 평안이 나를 감싸고 있음을 느꼈습니다(감사하게도 수술은 잘 되었습니다).

주님은 이사야 선지자를 통해 그의 백성들에게 주님이 그들의 목자가 되어 매일의 삶 속에서 그들을 인도하고 평안을 주겠다고 약속하셨습니다. 우리 또한 우리의 불안한 마음을 주님께 말씀드리고 그분의 사랑과 평안을 간구하면 주님이 부드럽게 보살펴주시는 것을 알 수 있습니다. 우리는 주님이 우리의 선한 목자이시며, 그 품에 우리를 안으시고, 그분의 영원한 팔로 우리를 인도해주신다는 것을 압니다.

The Good Shepherd

I sat in the hospital room with my husband, waiting anxiously. Our young son was having corrective eye surgery and I felt the butterflies jostle in my stomach as I fretted and worried. I tried to pray, asking God to give me His peace. As I leafed through my Bible, I thought about Isaiah 40, so I turned to the familiar passage, wondering if anything fresh would strike me.

As I read, I caught my breath, for the words from so many years ago reminded me that the Lord “tends his flock like a shepherd” as He “gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart” (V. 11). In that moment my anxiety left me as I realized the Lord was holding us, leading us, and caring for us. That was just what I needed, Lord, I breathed silently. I felt enveloped in God’s peace during and after the surgery (which thankfully went well).

The Lord promised His people through the prophet Isaiah that He would be their shepherd, guiding them in their daily lives and giving them comfort. We too can know His gentle tending as we tell Him our anxious thoughts and seek His love and peace. We know that He is our Good Shepherd, holding us close to His heart and carrying us in His everlasting arms. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

두 날개 달린 태양

점토로 된 고대 인장 하나가 예루살렘의 고고학연구소 창고에 5년 동안 보관되어 있었습니다. 그 인장이 예루살렘 고대 성벽의 남쪽 귀퉁이에서 발굴된 후, 초기 작업을 통해서는 거의 3천년이나 된 이 유물의 가치를 밝혀내지 못했습니다. 그러다가 한 연구원이 그 인장에 새겨진 글자를 면밀히 조사하다가 중요한 발견을 했습니다. 거기에는 고대 히브리어로 “유다 아하스 왕[의 아들] 히스기야의 소유” 라고 쓰여 있었던 것입니다.

그 인장 가운데에는 생명을 상징하는 두 가지 형상에 둘러싸인, 두 날개를 가진 태양이 있습니다. 인장을 발견한 고고학자들은 하나님이 히스기야 왕의 중병을 고쳐주신 후에(이사야 38:1-8) 왕이 하나님의 보호하심의 상징으로 이 인장을 사용하기 시작했다고 믿습니다. 히스기야는 하나님께 자신의 병을 고쳐달라고 간구했었습니다. 하나님은 그의 기도를 들으시고 “해 그림자를 뒤로 십도를 물러가게 하리라”(8절)고 말씀하시며, 하나님이 약속하신 것을 진실로 행하시겠다는 징표를 히스기야에게 주셨습니다.

Two-Winged Sun

For five years, an ancient clay seal remained in a closet in Jerusalem’s Institute of Archaeology. After the seal was dug up at the foot of the southern part of Jerusalem’s old city wall, initial examination failed to establish the significance of the nearly 3,000-year-old object. But then a researcher carefully scrutinized the letters on the seal, resulting in a major discovery. The inscription, written in ancient Hebrew, reads: “Belonging to Hezekiah [son of] Ahaz king of Judah.”

At the center of the seal is a two-winged sun surrounded by two images symbolizing life. The archaeologists who discovered the seal believe that King Hezekiah began using this seal as a symbol of God’s protection after the Lord healed him from a life-threatening illness (ISA. 38:1–8). Hezekiah had been pleading with the Lord to heal him. And God heard his prayer. He also gave Hezekiah a sign that He would indeed do what He had promised, saying, “I will cause the sun’s shadow to move ten steps backward” (V. 8 NLT ).

The facts related to this archeological artifact give us an encouraging reminder that the people in the Bible were learning, as we are, to call on the Lord who hears us when we cry out to Him for help. And even when His answers are not what we want or expect, we can rest assured that He is compassionate and He is powerful. The One who orders the movement of the sun can certainly move in our hearts. - POH FANG CHIA

모닝콜!

자주 여행을 다니며 밤마다 다른 도시에 머물렀던 지난 몇 해 동안, 나는 호텔에 투숙할 때마다 항상 모닝콜을 예약했었습니다. 개인 자명종도 있었지만, 아침에 잠자리에서 일어나 하루를 시작하기 위해서는 크게 울리는 전화 벨소리가 필요했습니다.

요한계시록은 요한 사도가 아시아 지역의 일곱 교회에게 쓴 영적 경종의 메시지를 담고 있습니다. 요한은 예수님 으로부터 받은 다음의 말씀을 사데 교회에 보냈습니다. “내가 네 행위를 아노니 네가 살았다 하는 이름은 가졌으나 죽은 자로다 너는 일깨어 그 남은 바 죽게 된 것을 굳건하게 하라 내 하나님 앞에 네 행위의 온전한 것을 찾지 못하였노니”(요한계시록 3:1-2).

영적으로 지친 상태에 있게 되면 하나님과의 관계가 조금씩 무기력해지는 것을 알아차리지 못할 수도 있습니다. 그러나 주님은 우리에게 “네가 어떻게 받았으며 어떻게 들었는지 생각하고 지켜 회개하라”(3절)고 말씀하십니다.

매일 아침 시간을 구별하여 성경을 읽고 기도로 주님과 대화하면 영적으로 깨어 있게 된다는 것을 많은 사람들이 알고 있습니다. 예수님과 함께 시간을 보내며 그 날에 있을 일들을 위해 주님께서 우리를 준비시키시는 것을 아는 것은 고된 일이 아니라 기쁨입니다.

Wake-Up Call!

During the years when I traveled frequently and stayed in a different city every night, I always scheduled a wake-up call when I checked into a hotel. Along with a per-sonal alarm, I needed a jangling telephone to help get me out of bed and moving in the morning.

The book of Revelation contains a spiritual wake-up call in the apostle John’s letters to the seven churches in the province of Asia. To the church in Sardis he wrote this message from Jesus Himself: “I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have found your deeds unfinished in the sight of my God” (REV. 3:1–2).

In the midst of spiritual fatigue, we may fail to notice the lethargy that creeps into our relationship with God. But the Lord tells us to “remember . . . what you have received and heard; hold it fast, and repent” (V. 3).

Many people find that scheduling some extra time each morning to read the Bible and talk to the Lord in prayer helps them stay spiritually alert. It’s not a job but a joy to spend time with Jesus and know that He prepares us for whatever lies ahead that day. - DAVID MCCASLAND

지렁이에서 전쟁까지

클레오는 열 살에 처음으로 낚시를 하게 됐는데, 미끼통을 들여다본 후 낚시 하는 것을 망설이는 듯 했습니다. 그러더니 결국에는 아빠에게 “도와주세요. 난-지-무!”라고 했습니다. 남편이 무슨 일이냐고 묻자 클레오는 “난-지-무! 난 지렁이가 무서워요!”라고 대답했습니다. 아이는 무서워서 꼼짝도 하지 못했습니다.

두려움은 어른들도 무기력하게 만들 수 있습니다. 미디안 사람들을 피해 몰래 밀을 타작하고 있던 기드온에게 주의 사자가 나타났을 때 그도 분명 두려웠을 것입니다 (사사기 6:11). 주의 사자는 하나님께서 기드온을 전쟁 가운데에 있는 그의 백성들의 지도자로 세우셨다고 말했습니다(12-14절).

기드온의 반응은 어떠했습니까? “오 주여 내가 무엇으로 이스라엘을 구원하리이까 보소서 나의 집은 므낫세 중에 극히 약하고 나는 내 아버지 집에서 제일 작은 자니이다”(15절). 기드온은 주님의 임재를 확신하고 나서도 계속 두려워했던 것 같습니다. 그래서 하나님의 약속대로 이스라엘의 구원을 위해 자신을 사용하실 것이라는 표징을 보여 달라고 하나님께 요청했고(36-40절), 하나님은 기드온의 요청에 응답하셨습니다. 이스라엘은 전쟁에서 승리했으며, 그 후 40년 동안 평화를 누렸습니다.

지렁이에서부터 전쟁에 이르기까지 우리는 모두 다양한 종류의 두려움을 갖고 있습니다. 기드온의 이야기는 하나님이 우리에게 어떤 일을 맡기실 때, 그 일을 감당할 힘과 능력도 함께 주신다는 사실을 확신할 수 있도록 가르쳐줍니다.

From Worms to War

It was ten-year-old Cleo’s first time fishing, and as he looked into the container of bait he seemed hesitant to get started. Finally he said to my husband, “Help me, I-S-O-W!” When my husband asked him what the problem was, Cleo responded, “I-S-O-W! I’m scared of worms!” His fear had made him unable to act.

Fear can paralyze grown men too. Gideon must’ve been afraid when the angel of the Lord came to him as he was threshing wheat in secret, hiding from his Midianite enemies (JUDG. 6:11). The angel told him he had been chosen by God to lead His people in battle (VV. 12–14).

Gideon’s response? “Pardon me, my lord, . . . but how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family” (V. 15). After being assured of the Lord’s presence, Gideon still seemed fearful and asked for signs that God would use him to save Israel as He promised (VV. 36–40). And God responded to Gideon’s requests. The Israelites were successful in battle and then enjoyed peace for forty years.

We all have fears of various kinds—from worms to wars. Gideon’s story teaches us that we can be confident of this: If God asks us to do something, He’ll give us the strength and power to do it. - ANNE CETAS

우리 부부에게 소그룹 모임을 우리 집에서 가졌으면 좋겠다는 요청이 들어왔을 때, 나는 바로 거절했습니다. 여러 가지로 적절하지 못하다고 생각했기 때문입니다. 우리 집에는 모두가 앉을 자리도 없고,
집도 작아 많은 사람을 수용할 수도 없었습니다. 모임의 대화를 잘 이끌 기술이 있는지도 확신할 수 없었고, 음식 준비하는데 별로 관심도 없고 돈도 없는데 음식을 준비하라고 부탁받는 것은 아닌지 염려되었습니다. 나는 우리 집에서 모임을 가지기에는 우리가 “충분히” 갖추고 있지 못하다고 느꼈습니다. ‘내가’ 그것을 감당하기에는 “충분하지” 않다고 느꼈습니다. 하지만 두려운 마음이 있었음에도, 우리는 하나님과 우리 공동체를 섬기는 마음으로 그것을 수락했습니다. 그리고 그 이후 5년 동안 소그룹 모임을 우리 집 거실에서 가지면서 우리는 큰 기쁨을 누릴 수 있었습니다.

하나님의 종 엘리사에게 보리떡을 가지고 온 사람에게서 나와 비슷한 주저함과 의심을 보게 됩니다. 엘리사는 그에게 그 보리떡을 사람들에게 나눠주라고 지시했지만, 그는 보리떡 스무 개로 백 명이나 되는 많은 사람을 먹일 수 있을지 의심했습니다. 그의 인간적인 생각으로 보기에는 떡이 충분하지 않을 것 같아, 떡을 전해주고 싶지 않은 유혹에 빠졌던 것 같습니다. 하지만 하나님께서 순종으로 드려진 재물을
받으시고 그것을 충분하게 하셨기 때문에 음식은 먹고도 남을 정도가 되었습니다(열왕기하 4:44).

우리 스스로 부적절하다고 생각되거나 드릴 것이 충분하지 않다고 여겨질 때, 우리가 가진 것을 순종하는 믿음으로 드리라고 하나님께서 요구하신다는 것을 기억하십시다. 하나님은 그것을 “충분하게” 만드시는 분이십니다.

Enough

When my husband and I were first asked to host a small group in our home, my immediate reaction was to decline. I felt inadequate. We didn’t have seats for everyone; our home was small and couldn’t hold many people. I didn’t know whether we had the skills to facilitate the discussion. I worried that I’d be asked to prepare food, something for which I lacked both passion and funds. I didn’t feel like we had “enough” to do it. I didn’t feel I was “enough” to do it. But we wanted to give to God and our community, so despite our fears, we agreed. Over the next five years we found great joy in welcoming the group into our living room.

I observe similar reluctance and doubt in the man who brought bread to God’s servant, Elisha. Elisha had instructed him to give it to the people, but the man questioned whether twenty loaves could feed so many—one hundred men. He seems to have been tempted to withhold the food because—in his human understanding—it wouldn’t be sufficient. Yet it was more than enough (2 KINGS 4:44), because God took his gift, given in obedience, and made it enough.

When we feel inadequate, or think what we have to offer isn’t sufficient, let’s remember that God asks us to give what we have in faithful obedience. He is the one who makes it “enough.” - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

언제까지입니까?

결혼하고 나는 아이가 곧 생길 거라고 생각했습니다. 하지만 그렇게 되지 않았고, 불임으로 인한 고통은 나를 더욱 기도하게 만들었습니다. 나는 종종 하나님께 “언제까지입니까?”라고 부르짖었습니다. 나는 하나님이 이 상황을 바꿔주실 수 있는 분이라는 것을 알고 있었습니다. 하지만 하나님이 왜 그렇게 하지 않으셨을까요?

당신도 하나님을 기다리고 있습니까? 이 세상에서 정의가 승리할 때까지, 암 치료가 가능할 때까지, 내가 더 이상 빚지지 않게 될 때까지 얼마나 더 기다려야 하는지 주님께 묻고 있습니까?

하박국 선지자는 그런 느낌에 대해 너무도 잘 알고 있었습니다. 기원전 7세기에 그는 하나님께 이렇게 부르짖었습니다. “여호와여 내가 부르짖어도 주께서 듣지 아니하시니 어느 때까지리이까 내가 강포로 말미암아 외쳐도 주께서 구원하지 아니하시나이다 어찌하여 내게 죄악을 보게 하시며 패역을 눈으로 보게 하시나이까”(하박국 1:2-3). 그는 공의와 권능의 하나님께서 어떻게 유다 나라 안에 사악함과 불의와 부패가 계속되게 하시는지 납득하기 어려워 오랜 시간을 기도했습니다. 하박국의 생각대로라면 하나님께서 벌써 개입하셨어야 했습니다. ‘왜 하나님은 아무것도 하지 않으셨을까요?’

우리도 하나님께서 아무것도 하지 않으신다고 느낄 때가 있습니다. 하박국처럼 우리도 하나님께 “언제까지입니까?”라고 끊임없이 물어보았습니다.

그러나 우리는 혼자가 아닙니다. 하박국의 경우처럼 하나님은 우리의 괴로움을 듣고 계십니다. 주님께서 우리를 돌보시기 때문에 우리는 계속 우리의 짐을 그분께 맡겨야 합니다. 하나님은 우리의 기도를 들으시고, 하나님의 때에 응답해주실 것입니다.

How Long?

When I married, I thought I would have children immediately. That did not happen, and the pain of infertility brought me to my knees. I often cried out to God, “How long?” I knew God could change my circumstance. Why wasn’t He?

Are you waiting on God? Are you asking, How long, Lord, before justice prevails in our world? Before there is a cure for cancer? Before I am no longer in debt?

The prophet Habakkuk was well acquainted with that feeling. In the seventh century BC , he cried out to the Lord: “How long, LORD , must I call for help, but you do not listen? Or cry out to you, ‘Violence!’ but you do not save? Why do you make me look at injustice? Why do you tolerate wrongdoing?” (HAB. 1:2–3). He prayed for a long time, struggling to reconcile how a just and powerful God could allow wickedness, injustice, and corruption to continue in Judah. As far as Habakkuk was concerned, God should have already intervened. Why was God doing nothing?

There are days when we too feel as if God is doing nothing. Like Habakkuk, we have continuously asked God, “How long?”

Yet, we are not alone. As with Habakkuk, God hears our burdens. We must continue to cast them on the Lord because He cares for us. God hears us and, in His time, will give an answer. - KAREN WOLFE

그때 알았더라면......

출근길에 “어린 나에게”라는 제목의 노래를 들었습니다. 가사에는 이런 아름다운 질문이 있습니다. ‘만일 네가 지금 모든 것을 아는 상태로 과거로 돌아갈 수 있다면 어린 네게 무슨 말을 해 주겠니?’ 노래를 들으면서 나는 지금보다 덜 현명한 어린 나에게 말해줄 만한 지혜와 경고에 대해 생각해보았습니다. 우리들 가운데 대부분은 살면서 언젠가 만약 처음부터 다시 시작할 수만 있다면 어떻게 다르게 할 수 있었을까 생각해본 적이 있었을 것입니다.

하지만 이 노래는 우리의 과거가 후회로 가득할지라도 그 모든 경험이 지금의 우리를 만들었다고 말해줍니다. 우리는 과거로 돌아갈 수도 없고, 우리의 선택이나 죄로 말미암은 결과를 바꿀 수도 없습니다. 하지만 과거의 무거운 짐과 실수를 더 이상 짊어지지 않아도 되게 하신 하나님을 찬양하십시오. 그것은 예수님께서 이루신 일 때문입니다! “그의 많으신 긍휼대로 예수 그리스도를 죽은 자 가운데서 부활하게
하심으로 말미암아 우리를 거듭나게 하사 산 소망이 있게 하시며” (베드로전서 1:3).

우리가 믿음으로 주님께로 돌아오고 죄를 슬퍼한다면, 주님은 우리를 용서하실 것입니다. 바로 그날 우리는 새 사람이 되어 영적으로 변화되는 과정이 시작됩니다(고린도후서 5:17). 우리가 무엇을 했든 (혹은 하지 않았든) 상관없이 주님께서 하신 일 때문에 우리는 용서 받았습니다. 오늘 최선을 다하고 주님과 함께 미래를 기대하며 우리는 앞으로 나아갈 수 있습니다. 그리스도 안에서 우리는 자유합니다!

If I Knew Then . . .

On the way to work, I listened to the song “Dear Younger Me,” which beautifully asks: If you could go back, knowing what you know now, what would you tell your younger self? As I listened, I thought about the bits of wisdom and warning I might give my younger, less-wise self. At some point in our lives, most of us have thought about how we might do things differently—if only we could do it all over again.

But the song illustrates that even though our past may fill us with regrets, all our experiences have shaped who we are. We can’t go back or change the consequences of our choices or our sin. But praise God we don’t have to carry the heavy burdens and mistakes of the past around with us. Because of what Jesus has done! “In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead”! (1 PETER 1:3).

If we turn to Him in faith and sorrow for our sins, He will forgive us. On that day we’re made brand new and begin the process of being spiritually transformed (2 COR. 5:17). It doesn’t matter what we’ve done (or haven’t done), we are forgiven because of what He’s done. We can move forward, making the most of today and anticipating a future with Him. 우리 곁을 맴돌고 계심

베티의 딸이 해외여행에서 집으로 돌아왔는데 몸 상태가 좋지 않았습니다. 딸이 고통을 참을 수 없는 지경에 이르자 베티와 그녀의 남편은 딸을 응급실로 데리고 갔습니다. 의사와 간호사가 치료를 시작한지 몇 시간 후 한 간호사가 베티에게 와서 “따님은 괜찮아질 거예요! 저희가 잘 돌봐서 낫도록 할게요.”라고 말했습니다. 그 순간 베티는 평안과 사랑이 물밀듯이 밀려오는 것을 느꼈습니다. 베티는 그녀가
걱정하며 딸 곁을 맴도는 반면, 주님은 힘든 시간을 보내고 있는 우리를 위로하시고 그분의 자녀들을 돌보시는 완벽한 부모라는 사실을 깨달았습니다.

신명기에서 주님은 그의 백성들이 광야를 헤맬 때 자녀 주변을 맴도는 사랑하는 부모와 같이 그들을 보살피셨다는 것을 상기시켜 주셨습니다. 주님은 결코 그들을 내버려두지 않으시고 오히려 독수리가 “날개를 펼쳐서” 새끼를 붙잡아 “하늘 높이 나는 것” 같이 하셨습니다 (32:11). 주님은 그들이 광야에서 고난과 역경을 겪었지만 주님이 그들을 버리지 않으셨다는 것을 기억하기를 원하셨습니다.

우리 역시 여러 가지 어려움을 겪을 수 있지만, 하나님이 우리를 결코 떠나지 않으신다는 것을 기억할 때 위로와 용기를 얻을 수 있습니다. 우리가 나락에 떨어진다고 느낄 때 주님이 독수리 같이 날개를 펼치셔서 우리를 붙잡아(11절) 평안함에 이르도록 인도해 주십니다.

Hovering Over Us

Betty’s daughter arrived home from an overseas trip, feeling unwell. When her pain became unbearable, Betty and her husband took her to the emergency room. The doctors and nurses set to work, and after a few hours one of the nurses said to Betty, “She’s going to be okay! We’re going to take good care of her and get her healed up.” In that moment, Betty felt peace and love flood over her. She realized that while she hovered over her daughter anxiously, the Lord is the perfect parent who nurtures His children, comforting us in difficult times.

In the book of Deuteronomy, the Lord reminded His people how, when they were wandering in the desert, He cared for them as a loving parent who hovers over its young. He never left them, but was like an eagle “that spreads its wings” to catch its children and “carries them aloft” (32:11). He wanted them to remember that although they experienced hardship and strife in the desert, He didn’t abandon them.

We too may face challenges of many kinds, but we can take comfort and courage in this reminder that our God will never leave us. When we feel that we are falling, the Lord like an eagle will spread His wings to catch us (V. 11) as He brings us peace. - AMY BOUCHER PYE
