하나님의 약속을 기도하다

“아니, 호수에 가면 안 돼.” 나는 고장난 배수관을 고치려고 싱크대 아래 머리를 파묻은 채로 딸에게 말했습니다. “아빠, 집안일 다 끝내면 가도 된다고 약속했잖아요.”라고 딸이 말했습니다. 나는 하고 있던 일에 정신이 팔려서 딸에게 한 말을 잊었습니다. 내 문제에 집중하느라 정신이 팔려 약속을 잊은 것이었습니다.

딸이 나에게 했던 것처럼 시편 기자도 하나님께 그분의 약속을 상기 시켰습니다. “주의 종에게 하신 말씀을 기억 하소서. 주께서 내게 소망을 가지게 하셨나이다”(119:49). 감사하게도 우리의 하나님 아버지는 다른 것에 정신이 팔리거나 망각하시는 분이 아닙니다. 우리의 상처, 문제, 실망을 하나님께 가져오는 것뿐만 아니라 그분이 선하신 아버지라는 확신을 가지고 그분께 나아갈 수 있습니다. “이 말씀은 나의 고난 중의 위로라 주의 말씀이 나를 살리셨기 때문이니이다”(50절).

하나님은 우리가 성경을 묵상하며 그분의 약속을 상기시킬 수 있도록 하십니다. 하나님이 약속을 망각하시기 때문이 아니라 우리가 하나님을 잘 알기를 원하시기 때문입니다. 그래서 시편 기자는 “여호와여 주의 옛 규례들을 내가 기억하고 스스로 위로하였나이다... 주의 율례들이 나의 노래가 되었나이다”(52, 54절)라고 노래합니다.

내가 다른 일에 정신이 팔려 있었기 때문에 딸아이가 나와의 약속을 상기시켜야 했습니다. 그러자 나는 기꺼이 딸아이를 호수에 가도록 했습니다. 우리는 하늘에 계신 우리 아버지께서 결코 다른 일에 몰두하시거나 너무 바쁘시지 않다는 사실에 감사할 수 있습니다. 하나님은 우리가 그분이 약속한 말씀을 기도로 되돌려 드리는 것을 기뻐하십니다.

PRAYING GOD’S PROMISES

“No, you can’t go to the lake,” I said to my daughter with my head tucked under the sink as I fixed a broken pipe. “Dad, you promised that after I had finished my chores, I could go,” she reminded me. I’d forgotten what I had said because I was preoccupied. My problem blinded me to my promise.

As my daughter did with me, the psalmist reminded God of His promises. “Remember your word to your servant,” he wrote, “for you have given me hope” (119:49). Thankfully we don’t have a heavenly Father who’s distracted and forgetful. We can come to Him not only with our hurts, problems, and disappointments but also in confidence knowing He’s a good Father: “My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life” (V. 50).

God invites us to meditate on the Scriptures so we can remind Him of His promises—not because He forgets but because He desires that we know Him well. That’s why the psalmist says, “I remember, Lord, your ancient laws, and I find comfort in them. . . . Your decrees are the theme of my song” (VV. 52, 54).

Because of my distractions, my daughter needed to remind me of my promise. When she did, I gladly let her go to the lake. We can be thankful that our heavenly Father is never preoccupied or too busy. He loves to hear us pray His words back to Him.

세밀한 하나님의 사랑

대학 신입생인 조카는 학업과 새 거주지에 적응하느라 바빴습니다. 최근 보안 문제 때문에 학교에서는 차량 통행증을 요구했습니다. 할 일 많은 조카를 위해 차량 통행증 신청을 대신 처리해 주겠다고 제안했습니다. 얼마 후, 조카는 고맙다고 하면서 내가 캠퍼스 사무실에서 그 일을 처리하는데 몇 분 밖에 걸리지 않았다는 사실에 놀라워했습니다.

실은 조카에게 말은 안했지만, 그 간단한 일을 위해 사무실과 협의하고, 신청서의 오류를 수정하고, 추가 서류들을 준비하느라 반나절이나 걸렸습니다. 하지만 나는 이런 설명을 하지 않고 “언제든지!” 바쁜 일이 있으면 부탁하라고 했습니다.

사랑은 세밀함 속에 있습니다. 이 상황에서는 조카가 미처 알지 못했던 세세한 부분을 챙겨주는 것이 사랑이었습니다. 성경은 이스라엘 백성이 광야를 지나는 동안 사소해 보이는 두 가지, 즉 그들의 옷과 신발을 통해 하나님의 사랑을 보여줍니다. 40년 동안 걸어온 그들의 “옷이 낡아지지 아니하였고 [그들의] 발의 신이 헤어지지 아니하였[습니다]”(신명기 29:5). 사실, 그들의 발은 붓지도 않았 습니다!(신명기 8:4).

하나님의 백성은 신실하지 못했지만, 하나님은 그들을 버리지 않으시고 “크신 긍휼”을 베푸셨습니다(느헤미야 9:19). 그들에게 “부족함이 없게” 하셨 습니다(21절). 하나님은 친히 임재하심, 성령의 권고, 양식과 물(19-20절)과 같은 “큰” 것들을 공급하셨을 뿐만 아니라 옷과 신발과 같은 “작지만” 필수적인 것들도 공급해 주셨습니다.

하나님은 우리가 간과하거나 알아차리지 못할 수도 있는 방식으로 그분의 사랑을 보여주십니다. 그분의 사랑은 우리 삶의 모든 세세한 부분까지도 살피 시는 그런 사랑입니다.

GOD IN THE DETAILS

My niece, a college freshman, was busy with schoolwork and adjusting to a new residence. Because of recent security issues, her school required a vehicle pass. Since applying for this would be one more task on her long to-do list, I offered to do it. “Thanks!” she later said, surprised it had taken me only minutes in the campus office.

What she didn’t know was that the otherwise simple task had taken half a day of coordinating with the office, fixing a glitch in her application, and gathering unexpected documents. But I didn’t tell her this. “Anytime!” I said.

Love is in the details. Here, it was in taking care of details my niece was unaware of. Scripture tells us of God’s love as seen in two seemingly small details of the Israelites’ life in the wilderness: their clothes and shoes. Throughout forty years of walking, their “clothes did not wear out, nor did the sandals on [their] feet” (DEUTERONOMY 29:5). In fact, their feet didn’t even swell! (8:4).

God’s people had been unfaithful, but He showed “great compassion,” not abandoning them (NEHEMIAH 9:19). “They lacked nothing” (V. 21). God provided the “big” things, such as His presence, the counsel of His Spirit, and food and water (VV. 19-20); and the “smaller” but necessary things, such as clothes and shoes.

God shows His love in ways we may overlook or be unaware of. Such is His love that He sees every detail of our life.

몇 년 전, 예술가 마이클 랜디는 자신이 소유한 모든 물건들을 세어보며 7,227개의 소유물 목록을 만들었습니다. 그 다음에 한 일이 놀라웠는데, 런던의 가장 번화한 쇼핑가에 공장을 세우고, 그 모든 것을 공개적으로 파괴했습니다. 옷, 예술품, 연애편지, 심지어 자동차까지 모두 분해되어 컨베이어 벨트에 올려지고 분쇄기로 들어갔습니다. 소비자들이 그 주변 백화점을 바쁘게 드나드는 동안 랜디의 공연 예술은 “소유물 없이 우리는 누구인가?”라고 물었습니다.

물건을 소유하는 것 자체가 죄는 아닙니다. 마이클 랜디도 여전히 옷이 필요했습니다. 하지만 우리가 소유한 것에서 삶과 정체성을 찾으려는 유혹을 받을 때, 예수님은 “사람의 생명이 그 소유의 넉넉한 데 있지 아니하니라”(15절)고 상기시켜 주십니다. 당신이 가진 모든 소유물이 없어진다면 당신은 누구일까요? 여전히 하나님의 사랑받는 자녀입니다(시편 103:17; 에베소서 5:1). 이 확고한 정체성만 가지고도 우리는 하나님께는 물론 다른 사람들을 향해 부유한 삶을 살 수 있습니다.

DEFINED BY CHRIST

Some years ago, artist Michael Landy counted up everything he owned, making a list of 7,227 possessions. What he did next was eye-opening. Setting up a factory in London’s busiest shopping district, Landy publicly destroyed it all. Clothes, artwork, love letters, even his car, were broken down, placed on a conveyor belt, and fed into grinders. As consumers darted in and out of department stores nearby, Landy’s performance art asked, “Who are we without our possessions?”

It’s an important question because most of us buy things to define ourselves or secure our futures. Jesus told a parable about a man who horded his wealth and embraced a consumer lifestyle. “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years,” the man tells himself. “Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry” (LUKE 12:19). But what was left when his life was “demanded” from him that night? Only God’s rebuke at having missed what’s most important (VV. 20-21).

It isn’t a sin to own things. Michael Landy still needed clothes. But when we’re tempted to find life and identity in what we own, Jesus reminds us that “life does not consist in an abundance of possessions” (V. 15). Who would you be without all your goods? Still a dearly loved child of God (PSALM 103:17; EPHESIANS 5:1). Out of this secure identity, we can be rich toward God and others.

예수님 안에서 하나된 우리

젊은 기자로서 하계 및 동계 올림픽에 참석하여 스포츠 경기를 관람하고 선수들을 만나면서 마침내 내 꿈이 이루어졌다고 생각했습니다. 무엇 보다도 그때 나는 세계 각국에서 온 사람들이 서로 다른 언어로 이야기 하며 각자의 나라를 축하하는 모습에 매료되었던 것입니다.

나는 십대 때부터 올림픽을 아주 좋아했는데, 그것은 점점 집착이 되었습 니다. 어느 하계 올림픽에서 나는 하나님을 따르겠다고 결단한 후, 하나님께서 저에게 이제 스포츠라는 우상을 내려놓으라고 하시는 것을 느꼈습니다. 하지만 여전히 열방에 대한 사랑은 남아있었습니다. 요즘도 올림픽 관람을 즐기지만 지금 저의 가슴을 진정 벅차게 하는 것은 서로 다른 배경과 나라에서 온 사람들이 주일 예배나 모임에서 함께 모여 기도하고 만왕의 왕을 예배할 때입니다. 이 땅에서 맛보는 천국의 달콤한 맛이지요!(요한계시록 7:9)

그리스도 안에서 우리가 누구인지 기억할 때, 우리는 하나님의 가족에 속해 있고 그 가족은 국경을 넘어선 하나의 공동체입니다.

바울 사도는 갈라디아의 성도들에게 이렇게 선포했습니다. “그러므로 너희가 다 믿음으로 말미암아 그리스도 예수 안에서 하나님의 아들이 되었으니” (갈라디아서 3:26). “너희는 유대인이나 헬라인이나 종이나 자유인이나 남자나 여자나 다 그리스도 예수 안에서 하나이니라”(28절).

어느 나라에서 왔든지, 어디에 살든지, 믿는 자로서 우리는 전 세계의 형제 자매들과 그리스도 안에서 하나임을 기뻐합시다.

ONE IN JESUS

Watching sporting competitions and meeting athletes was a dream come true for me when I attended a Summer and Winter Olympics as a young reporter. I was enthralled by hearing people from all over the world speaking in different languages and celebrating their various countries.

I’d been fascinated with the Olympics since I was a teen, but it had become an obsession. After I said yes to following God while at the Summer Games, I felt God was asking me to lay down my idol of sports. But I still had a love for the nations. I still enjoy watching the Olympics, but my heart is truly stirred when people of different backgrounds and from different nations come together during a church service or gathering to pray and to worship the King of kings. What a sweet taste of heaven on earth (REVELATION 7:9)!

When we remember who we are in Christ, we remember that we belong to God’s family and His family is international.

The apostle Paul declared to the believers in Galatia, “So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith” (GALATIANS 3:26). “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (V. 28).

No matter where we’re from or where we live, let’s rejoice that as believers we’re one in Christ with our brothers and sisters around the world.

하나님의 임재를 떠올리는 상징

캘리포니아의 조슈아트리 국립공원을 하이킹하던 중, 잎이 듬성듬성 달린 가지들이 하늘을 향해 뻗은 손처럼 자라고 있는 특이한 나무가 신기했습니다. 이 나무를 “조슈아트리(여호수아 나무)”라고 이름 지은 이들은 바로 하나님의 임재와 도우심을 상징하며 단창을 높이 들었던 구약에 나오는 여호수아의 이야기를 떠올린 개척자들이라고 합니다.

n가나안 땅에 들어온 이스라엘 백성은 전쟁을 치르며 하나님의 도우심이 절실했습니다. 그들의 죄로 인해 아이 성에서 패배한 후(여호수아 7:11–12), 이스라엘 백성들은 또 싸우는 것을 두려워했을 것입니다. 그러나 하나님은 “두려워하지 말라, 놀라지 말라”(8:1)고 여호수아를 격려하셨습니다. 그리고 여호수아에게 말씀하셨습니다. “네 손에 잡은 단창을 들어 아이를 가리키라 내가 이 성읍을 네 손에 넘겨 주리라”(18절). 여호수아는 하나님께 순종하여 전투를 이길 때까지 “단창을 잡아 든 손을 거두지 아니하였”습니다(26절). 전쟁의 승리를 가져온 것은 여호수아가 든 단창이 아니었습니다. 높이 들린 그 단창은 도우시고 함께 하시겠다는 하나님의 약속을 상징하는 증표였습니다.

어려운 도전을 맞닥뜨릴 때, 하나님의 임재를 상기시켜주는 것들은 큰 힘이 됩니다. 집 안에 걸려있는 성경 구절, 하나님의 피조물을 담은 아름다운 사진, 십자가 목걸이 같은 물건들 자체가 도움을 주는 것은 아니지만, 이를 통해 하나님은 그분의 임재와 능력의 약속을 상기시켜 주십니다.

REMINDER OF GOD’S PRESENCE

With branches of scraggly leaves growing upward like hands raised to the heavens, the unique trees we saw while hiking Joshua Tree National Park in California intrigued us. Many believe the trees were dubbed “Joshua Trees” by pioneers, who were reminded by the trees of an Old Testament story where Joshua lifted high a javelin as a sign of God’s presence and help.

After entering Canaan, the Israelites needed God’s help in battle. After being defeated at the city of Ai due to their sin (JOSHUA 7:11-12), the Israelites were likely afraid to fight the city again. But God encouraged Joshua, “Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged” (8:1). Then God told Joshua to “hold out toward Ai the javelin that is in your hand, for into your hand I will deliver the city” (V. 18). Joshua obeyed God and “did not draw back the hand that held out his javelin” until the battle was won (V. 26). It wasn’t the javelin in Joshua’s outstretched hand that secured the victory. Instead, it was a symbol of God’s promise to help them and be with them.

Reminders of God’s presence with us can be helpful when we face difficult challenges. A Bible verse displayed in our homes, a stunning picture of God’s creation, a cross necklace: These things don’t provide assistance, but God can use them to remind us of His promised presence and power. 충실한 청지기들

2024년 3월, 미국의 한 항공우주 기업은 연방항공국이 실시한 안전 점검에서 불합격 판정을 받았습니다. 이 점검은 여러 건의 안전 사고 후에 실시된 것인데, 그 중에는 비행 중 항공기 문을 막아주는 패널이 떨어져 나가 기내 기압이 급강하한 사건도 있었습니다. 안전 불합격 판정을 받은 회사 대변인은 직원들에게 주는 지침이 난해하고, 자주 바뀌었기 때문에 그들이 승인된 절차를 충실히 따르지 못했던 점이 문제였음을 시인했습니다.

바울은 고린도 교회에게 자신과 다른 지도자들을 충실하고 입증된 “그리스도의 일꾼들”로 보아야 한다고 말하며, 자신이 하나님의 청지기로 “위임받았다”고 분명히 말했습니다(고린도전서 4:1–2). 바울 시대의 청지기들은 집안의 자원을 관리하고 분배하는 권한을 위임받은 사람들이었습니다. 이러한 책임을 맡은 사람들에게 요구되는 기본적인 자질은 다른 무엇보다도 충실함이었습니다. 바울은 자신을 하나님이 주신 모든 것들, 특히 하나님의 지혜와 복음의 신비를 조심스레 사용하며 맡겨진 책임을 다하는(1-2절) 삶을 살기 위해 “수고하여 친히 손으로 일을 하는” 청지기라 칭했습니다(12절).

예수님께서 공급해 주시는 대로 우리는 충직한 청지기가 되어, 영적인 활동과 주어진 업무는 물론 개인적인 인간관계 속에서 주님께서 인증하신 완전한 기준에 따라 충실히 힘쓰도록 합시다.

FAITHFUL STEWARDS

In March 2024, a US aerospace corporation failed a safety audit conducted by the Federal Aviation Administration. The audit came on the heels of multiple safety incidents, including a flight that had experienced a dangerous drop in cabin pressure when a door-plug panel on the jet tore away. A spokesman for the company acknowledged that the failures were due to instructions for employees being difficult to understand and altered too often, resulting in them not faithfully adhering to approved procedures.

Paul told the church at Corinth that they should view him and other leaders as faithful and approved “servants of Christ” and declared that he’d been “entrusted” with being a steward for God (1 CORINTHIANS 4:1-2). Stewards in Paul’s day were entrusted with overseeing the management and distribution of household resources. Above everything else, a fundamental requirement for those given these responsibilities was faithfulness. Paul labeled himself as a steward who “[worked] hard with [his] own hands” to live out his responsibilities (V. 12)—carefully using what God had given him, especially the wisdom He’d been given and the mysteries of the gospel (VV. 1-2).

As Jesus provides, let’s strive to be faithful stewards, adhering to His approved and flawless standard in our spiritual practices, work duties, and personal relationships.

내 누이의 하나님

아미나는 기독교가 불법인 나라에서 예수님을 믿게 되었습니다. 이 새로운 믿음을 오빠에게 전하려 했지만, 오빠는 누이의 호소를 거절했습니다. 그러던 어느 날, 그는 심각한 폐 질환에 걸려 어두운 병실에서 혼자 가쁜 숨을 몰아 쉬고 있었습니다. 예수님이 하나님의 아들이심을 인정할 준비가 되어 있지 않았고, 누군가 들을까 두려워 예수님의 이름을 소리 내어 말할 수도 없었습니다. 그래서 그는 이렇게 외쳤습니다. “내 누이의 하나님이여, 제발 지금 나를 도와주세요!” 그 순간, 갑자기 숨쉬기가 편해졌고 병실 안이 이유 없이 밝아졌습니다. 그의 믿음의 여정은 그날부터 시작되었습니다.

창세기에서 아브라함의 종은 주인의 아들에게 짝을 찾아주기 위한 여정을 떠났습니다. 그는 먼저 “우리 주인 아브라함의 하나님”께 기도했습니다(24:12). 왜 그랬을까요? 그는 하나님께서 아브라함에게 “내가 너로 큰 민족을 이루게” 하겠다(12:2)고 말씀하신 것을 알고 있었기 때문입니다. 하나님은 그 약속을 여러 번 하셨고(15:2–5) “아브람이 여호와를 믿으니 여호와께서 이를 그의 의로 여기셨”습니다(6절). 이 종은 아브라함의 믿음의 실체를 보았기에 “우리 주인 아브라함의 하나님”(24:27, 42, 48)을 신뢰할 수 있었습니다.

우리는 말로 사람들을 예수님께 인도합니다. 하지만 더 중요한 것은 우리가 그들 앞에서 어떻게 사는가 하는 것입니다. 한 분이신 참 하나님을 향한 진정한 믿음은 그 어떤 말보다 울림이 큽니다.

아브라함의 하나님, 아미나의 하나님께서 우리의 삶을 사용하셔서 많은 이들을 주께로 인도하시기를 소망합니다.

GOD OF MY SISTER

Amina had come to Christ in a country where Christianity was illegal. She began to share her new faith with her brother, who rejected her appeals. Then he contracted a dangerous lung condition. Alone in a dark hospital room, he gasped for breath. He wasn’t ready to acknowledge Jesus as God’s Son, and he feared speaking the name of Christ aloud. (Someone might hear him!) So he called out, “God of my sister, please help me now!” Suddenly, he could breathe easily, and the room brightened inexplicably. His journey to belief in Jesus began that day.

In Genesis, Abraham’s servant went on a quest to find a wife for his master’s son. First, he prayed to the “God of my master Abraham” (24:12). Why? The servant knew God had told Abraham, “I will make you into a great nation” (12:2). God repeated that promise (15:2-5), and “Abram believed the Lord, and [God] credited it to him as righteousness” (V. 6). The servant could trust “the God of my master Abraham” (24:27, 42, 48) because he’d witnessed the reality of Abraham’s faith.

With our words, we invite others to follow Jesus. More important, however, is the way we live before them. The reality of genuine faith in the one true God speaks volumes.

May the God of Abraham and of Amina use our lives to draw others to Him.

예수님께 드리는 나의 헌신

빅토리아 시대 시인 크리스티나 로제티는 그의 기슴을 파고드는 시 “더 나은 부활”에서 “눈을 들어보지만 / 슬픔에 흐려진 내 눈에는 / 영원한 언덕이 보이지 않네.”라고 썼습니다. 이 시는 희망이 전혀 느껴지지 않을 때 희망을 붙잡으려 애쓰는 모습을 묘사합니다. “희망도 두려움도 느낄 수 없이 무감각 해져.” 그러나 로제티는 절망의 감정보다 더 깊이 자리한 소망에 닻을 내리고 있었습니다. 그리스도의 부활이 자신의 삶을 새롭게 할 것이라는 어떤 “싹이나 푸르름”도 보이지 않았지만, 시인은 “그래도 반드시 살아날 것”이라고 고백하며 “오 예수여, 내 안에 살아나소서”라고 기도합니다.

고린도후서에서 바울 사도도 “힘에 겹도록 심한 고난을 당하여 살 소망까지 끊어”졌다고 말합니다(1:8). 그러나 바울 사도는 그 절망을 통해 오직 “죽은 자를 다시 살리시는 하나님” 안에 있는 소망을 배울 수 있었다고 합니다(9절).

또 바울은 여전히 불완전한 “질그릇” 같은 우리의 몸 안에 복음의 소망을 담고 있을 때, 그리스도의 부활 생명과 소망이 “심히 큰 능력은 하나님께 있고 우리에게 있지 아니함”이란 말씀과 같이 빛난다는 사실을 배웠습니다(4:7).

로제티의 시에서도 이런 전환이 일어납니다. 자신의 무너진 마음을 하나님께 올려드릴 때, 그녀의 기도는 오직 자신의 삶의 부서진 조각들이 “불 속에 던져져” 다시 빚어지고 변화되어 “주 나의 왕”께 드릴 헌신으로 바뀌었습니다. 이 시는 이렇게 간단하게 끝이 납니다. “오 예수여, 나를 마셔 주소서.”

AN OFFERING FOR JESUS

“I lift mine eyes, but dimm’d with grief / No everlasting hills I see,” wrote the Victorian poet Christina Rosetti in her poignant poem “A Better Resurrection.” Rosetti’s poem describes grasping for hope when she feels none, “numb’d too much for hopes or fears.” Yet Rosetti was anchored in a hope deeper than her feelings of despair. Though she could see “no bud nor greenness” pointing to Christ’s resurrection renewing her life, she confessed: “Yet rise it shall” and prayed, “O Jesus, rise in me.”

In 2 Corinthians, the apostle Paul also described experiencing suffering “far beyond [his] ability to endure, so that [he] despaired of life itself” (1:8). But he found that his despair taught him to find his hope only in “God, who raises the dead” (V. 9).

And he learned that as we carry the hope of the gospel in the still-imperfect “jars of clay” of our bodies, Christ’s resurrection life and hope shine through, revealing “that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us” (4:7).

This shift happens in Rosetti’s poem too. As she lifted her broken heart up to God, her prayer became only that the broken pieces of her life would be “cast in the fire” to be molded and transformed into an offering “for Him, my King.” Her poem concludes simply: “O Jesus, drink of me.”

우울한 생각을 넘어서

캐나다의 싱어송라이터 고든 라이트풋은 “에드먼드 피츠제럴드호의 침몰(The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald)”과 “내 마음을 읽을 수 있다면(If You Could Read My Mind)” 같은 오랫동안 사랑받는 명곡들로 잘 알려져 있습니다. 하지만 그의 노래 중에 별로 알려지지 않은 노래가 하나 있는데 “새벽의 음유시인(The Minstrel of the Dawn)”입니다. (음유시인은 자신의 시를 노래에 담아 부르는 사람을 말함) 라이트풋의 음유시인은 우리처럼 “우울하기보다는 더 행복하고” 싶어합니다. 늘 마음 쓰이거나, 고민하게 만드는 “우울한” 일들이 많지만, 이 음유시인은 새로운 날이 밝아올 때 기쁜 일에 집중해서 노래하기를 선택합니다.

시편의 음유시인 다윗도 그와 비슷한 글을 썼습니다. “아침에 주의 인자하심을 높이 부르오리니”(시편 59:16). 다윗에게는 그를 따라다니는 “우울한” 일들이 많이 있었습니다. 적들이 그를 공격할 준비를 하고, 난폭한 사람들이 그를 중상하고 음모를 꾸미는 상황이었습니다(1-3절). 다윗은 “그들은 저물어 돌아와서 개처럼 울며 성으로 두루 다닌다”(6절)고 하면서도, 새로운 날이 밝아올 때 단순히 기쁜 일에만 마음을 두지 않고, 선하신 분, 곧 하나님께 집중하여 “주는 나의 요새이시며 나의 환난 날에 피난처”(16절)라고 하며 긍휼히 여기시는 하나님의 사랑을 찬송합니다(17절).

비록 싱어송라이터는 아닐지라도, 새벽의 음유시인이 될 수 있습니다. 다윗처럼 여러분도 하나님께 이렇게 고백할 수 있습니다. “나는 주의 힘을 노래하며 아침에 주의 인자하심을 높이 부르오리니”(16절).

BEYOND THE BLUES

Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot is best known for enduring classics like “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” and “If You Could Read My Mind.” But one of his lesser-known songs is titled “The Minstrel of the Dawn.” (A minstrel is a troubadour, a singer who puts his poetry to music.) Like us, Lightfoot’s troubadour longs to be “more happy than blue.” Although there are always “blue” things to think about or dwell on, the minstrel chooses to focus on happy things as the new day dawns and then to sing about them.

The minstrel of the psalms, David, penned a similar line: “In the morning I will sing of your love” (PSALM 59:16). David had plenty of “blue” things to dwell on—from enemies ready to attack him to fierce men slandering and conspiring against him (VV. 1-3). “They return at evening,” he sang, “snarling like dogs, and prowl about the city” (V. 6). But he chose, as the new day dawned, to focus not simply on something happy but on someone good—God—and then sing of God’s love, “my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble” (V. 16) on “whom I can rely” (V. 17).

You may not be a singer-songwriter, but you can still be a minstrel of the dawn. Like David, you can tell God, “I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love” (V. 16).

하나님의 응답을 기다리는 것

조셉은 답답한 마음으로 구인광고를 훑어보고 있었습니다. 지금까지 웨이터로 일할 때는 수입이 괜찮았지만, 외식업계 특성상 주말 근무가 잦아 초신자로서 그에게는 매주 교회에 출석하지 못하는 일이 부담 이었습니다. “왜 하나님은 내 기도에 응답하지 않으시는 걸까?”하고 탄식 했습니다. “하나님도 내가 교회에 다니는 걸 원하실 텐데 말이야.”

조셉은 일년이 지나서야 직장에 대한 기대치를 바꾸어 다른 분야의 일을 찾아봐야 한다는 것을 깨닫게 되었고, 마침내 규칙적으로 평일 근무가 가능한 직장을 찾을 수 있었습니다. 그는 하나님께 감사하며, 긴 기다림을 통해 결정을 내리는 데 있어서 자신이 더욱 성숙할 수 있었음을 깨달았습니다. 직업을 바꾸는 과정을 통해 조셉은 또한 인생에서 인내한다는 것이 무엇인지, 그리고 그분의 때에 그분의 계획을 드러내시는 하나님을 신뢰한다는 것이 무엇을 의미하는지를 배우게 되었습니다..

그럴 때 바로 야고보가 흩어져 시련을 겪고 있던 예수를 믿는 유대인 신자들에게 한 말이 있었습니다. 포기하지 말라고 격려하며 야고보는 이렇게 말했습니다. “인내를 온전히 이루라 이는 너희로 온전하고 구비하여 조금도 부족함이 없게 하려 함이라”(야고보서 1:4). 하나님께 지혜를 구하고, 기다리며, 굳건히 서 있는 과정은(5-6절) 그들의 인내와 하나님을 향한 신뢰를 기를 뿐 아니라, 자신과 하나님에 대해 더 깊이 배우면서 성숙해지도록 도울 것입니다.

하나님의 응답을 기다리는 것은 쉽지 않습니다. 하지만 그것은 우리를 더 성숙하고 굳건하게 만들며, 우리의 믿음을 강건케 하고 하나님을 신뢰한다는 것이 무엇인지 더 깊이 이해하게 해 줍니다.

WAITING FOR GOD

Joseph combed the job listings frustratedly. Previous jobs as a waiter had paid well, but regular weekend shifts typical of the restaurant industry made it hard for him as a new believer in Jesus to attend church regularly. “Why doesn’t God answer my prayer?” he lamented. “Wouldn’t He want me to attend church?”

It took a year before Joseph saw that he had to adjust his expectations and try a different industry where he finally found a job with regular weekday shifts. Thanking God, he realized how the long wait had made him more mature in making decisions. This job change process had also taught Joseph what it means to persevere in life and trust in God to reveal His plans in His time.

That’s what James told Jewish believers in Jesus, who were scattered and facing trials. Encouraging them not to give up, he said: “Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete” (JAMES 1:4). The process of asking God for wisdom, waiting, and standing firm (VV. 5-6) would not only nurture their patience and trust in God but also help them grow in maturity as they learned more about themselves and God.

Waiting for God’s answer can be tough, but it makes us more mature and steadfast, strengthens our faith, and gives us a deeper understanding of what it means to trust God.
