하나님의 위엄을 보다

19세기 시인 제라드 맨리 홉킨스는 그의 소네트 시 “하나님의 위엄”에서 그 많은 창조물들이 “하나님의 위엄”으로 ”가득 채워진” 수많은 방식 들을 찬양하고 있습니다. 홉킨스는 하나님의 숨막히는 영광이 “흔들린 금박에서 빛이 반짝이는 것처럼” 타오르며 반짝이고 있다고 묘사합니다. 하지만 하나님의 아름다움이 그토록 강렬하게 빛나는데 왜 그렇게 많은 사람들이 그것을 보지 못할까요? 홉킨스는 그 한 가지 이유로 인류가 모든 것을 “사람의 얼룩”과 “사람의 냄새”로 덮어버려서 많은 사람들이 자기 자신 너머의 것을 보지 못하기 때문이라고 말합니다.

시편 104편 또한 하나님의 창조 속 아름다움을 찬양하는 시입니다. 시인은 생생한 이미지로 하나님을 “존귀와 권위로 옷 입으신 분”(1절)으로 묘사하며 바람과 불(4절), 천둥과 파도(7절), 물과 풀과 나무(10-16절)에서 하나님의 아름 다움과 권능과 돌보심을 드러내 보여줍니다.

우리의 몸과 영혼을 유지시키는 무수히 많은 선물들(15절)은 우리가 깨닫든 깨닫지 못하든 항상 “여호와의 영광”(31절)을 가리키고 있습니다. 홉킨스는 인류가 하나님의 찬란한 영광을 보지 못할 때라도, 하나님의 선하심으로 말미암아 “사물의 깊숙한 곳에 항상 가장 귀한 신선함이 살아 있다”고 하면서 그의 시를 끝맺고 있습니다. 우리가 잠시 멈춰 바라보고 생각만 해봐도 “[우리가] 살아있는 동안”(33절) 하나님의 아름다움과 선하심을 보고, 믿고, 찬양할 이유는 무수히 많습니다.

SEEING GOD’S GRANDEUR

In nineteenth-century poet Gerard Manley Hopkins’ sonnet “God’s Grandeur,” this literary artist celebrates the countless ways creation is “charged”—intensely filled—with “the grandeur of God.” Hopkins describes God’s breathtaking glory flaming and glistening “like shining from shook foil.” But if God’s beauty is so vibrant, why do so many people miss it? Hopkins suggested one reason is that humanity has covered everything with “man’s smudge” and “man’s smell”—leaving many unable to see anything beyond themselves.

Psalm 104 is also a celebration of God’s beauty in creation. Using vivid imagery, the poet describes God “clothed with splendor and majesty” (V. 1), revealing His beauty, power, and care in wind and fire (V. 4), thunder and waves (V. 7), water, grass, and trees (VV. 10-16).

Countless gifts sustaining both body and soul (V. 15) point to “the glory of the Lord” (V. 31) whether we always realize it or not. In his poem, Hopkins concluded that, even when humanity is blind to God’s glory, because of His goodness, there always “lives the dearest freshness deep down things.” If only we’ll stop to see and wonder, there are countless reasons to see, believe in, and celebrate God’s beauty and goodness “as long as [we] live” (V. 33).

하나님의 좋은 땅

매년 늦은 봄 나는 정원에 오이 씨앗을 심습니다. 씨앗은 빠르게 잎을 내지만 열매를 보려면 시간이 걸립니다. 솔직히 나는 씨앗에 물을 주고 기다리던 어느 여름, 오이를 하나라도 딸 수 있을지 의심했었습니다. ‘내가 너무 많은 씨앗을 촘촘히 심은 것은 아닌지? 심을 때 땅이 충분히 따뜻하지 않았는지?’ 등, 여러 생각이 들었습니다. 그러던 어느 날 푸른 색의 동그란 것이 매달린 것을 보았고, 그 다음 주에 또 하나, 그리고 다른 하나를 더 발견 하였습니다. 몇 주 안 지나 덩굴만 있던 것이 일주일 동안 샐러드를 만들 수 있을 만큼 오이가 열렸습니다.

영적 성장도 때때로 그렇게 보입니다. 인내와 절제, 온유와 사랑(갈라디아서 5:22-23) 등, 우리가 기도해 온 것들이 항상 그렇게 열매로 나타나지는 않습니다. 그러나 기도, 성경공부, 예배, 다른 사람을 섬기는 등, 성장에 필요한 조건을 만들어 달라고 하나님께 간구하면 성령께서 성장을 이루게 해 주십니다.

이것이 누가복음 8장에서 예수님이 말씀하신 “씨 뿌리는 농부”(5절) 비유의 핵심입니다. 길가에 떨어진 씨앗들 일부를 “새들이 먹어버렸고”(5절), 바위에 떨어진 다른 씨앗들은 습기가 없으므로 말랐고(6절), 가시 떨기 속에 떨어진 씨앗들은 가시가 함께 자라서 기운을 막았지만(7절), 좋은 땅에 심어진 씨앗들은 “백 배의 결실을” 맺었습니다(8절).

하나님이 우리를 도우시므로 “좋은 땅”을 일구어 그분 안에서 성장하도록 합시다.

GOOD SOIL IN GOD

In late spring each year, I plant cucumber seeds in our garden. The seeds produce leaves quickly, but it takes time to see the fruit. In fact, one summer after I watered the seeds and waited, I questioned whether I’d get any cucumbers at all. I thought, Did I put too many seeds too close together, or was the ground not warm enough when I’d planted them? But one day, I spotted a green bulb. The next week, I spotted another. Then another. Within a few weeks, we moved from only vines to almost enough fruit to make salad for a week.

Spiritual growth looks like that sometimes. We don’t always see the things we’ve been praying for: patience, self-control, being gentle and loving (SEE GALATIANS 5:22-23). But if we ask God to help us create the conditions needed for growth—prayer, studying the Scriptures, worship, serving others—the Holy Spirit will produce the growth.

This is the crux of the parable Jesus shares in Luke 8: “A farmer went out to sow his seed” (V. 5). “The birds ate” some of the seeds that fell on the path (V. 5). Others landed on rocky ground, where they received no moisture and withered (V. 6). Some more fell among thorns and were choked before they could grow (V. 7). But the seed that was planted on good soil yielded a crop that was “a hundred times more than was sown” (V. 8).

As God helps us, let’s cultivate “good soil” and grow in Him.

추수를 기다리며

1962년, 조앤 셰틀러와 앤 페처는 예수님에 대해 들어본 적이 없는 이들에게 복음을 전하기 위해 버스와 도보로 고된 여정에 나서며 필리핀의 험준한 산악 지대로 들어갔습니다.

예수님의 이야기를 전하는 우리 모두는 상대방이 듣지 않는 것 같아 낙담할 때가 있습니다. 바울 사도도 그런 일이 있을 줄 알았습니다. 그는 갈라디아 교인들에게 복음을 심고 거두는 일의 중요성을 설명한 후, 씨 뿌리는 사람도 지칠 수 있다는 사실을 인식하고 편지를 읽는 자들에게 “선을 행하되 낙심하지 말라”(갈라디아서 6:9)고 격려했습니다.

조앤과 앤의 첫 5년의 사역은 분명 실망스러웠습니다. 하지만 그들은 계속 씨를 뿌렸고 마침내 수확을 거두었습니다. “포기하지” 맙시다(9절). 구원의 메시지는 분명히 “영생을 거두게” 될 것입니다(8절).

WAITING FOR THE HARVEST

In 1962, Joanne Shetler and Anne Fetzer made an arduous trek by bus and foot into the rugged mountains of the Philippines to share the gospel with people who’d never heard of Jesus.

For five years, they translated Scripture into the people’s language, but the Balangao villagers weren’t receptive. They did, however, help build a primitive landing strip so new supplies could be flown in. One day, a plane dubbed “magic from another world” by the people arrived. The pilot then flew a deathly ill, pregnant village woman to a faraway clinic. When the plane later returned with the recovered woman and her healthy newborn, the people began asking about “this God” they’d been told about. Soon the village had a church full of believers in Christ.

All of us who share the story of Jesus have times of discouragement when our listeners don’t seem to hear. The apostle Paul knew that can happen. After explaining to the Galatians the importance of planting and harvesting the gospel, he recognized that a sower may grow tired. So he challenged his listeners not to “become weary in doing good” (GALATIANS 6:9).

The first five years of Joanne and Anne’s work was surely discouraging. But they kept sowing, and eventually they reaped a harvest. Let’s not “give up” (V. 9). Surely, the message of salvation will “reap eternal life” (V. 8).

하나님을 아는 지식에 자라가기

수영장에 뛰어든 순간, 물안경에 물이 가득 차서 앞을 거의 볼 수 없었 습니다. 정식으로 수영을 배운 적이 없이 즉흥적으로 참가한 시합에서 나는 천천히 두 번 왕복을 마쳤습니다. 몇 년 후, 수영 교습을 받고 올바른 호흡법과 수영 기법을 배운 후 경기용 네 가지 수영법을 모두 즐길 수 있었습니다.

적절한 훈련이 얼마나 큰 차이를 만들어내는지 모릅니다. 성경 읽기도 마찬가지입니다. 우리가 읽는 말씀의 맥락과 의미를 이해할 때, 우리의 믿음이 자라고 말씀을 삶에 올바르게 적용할 수 있습니다.

바울은 디모데가 믿음 안에 굳게 서서, 다툼을 피하고, 거짓 교사들에게 속지 않기를 바랐습니다. 사도는 그의 마지막 편지에서 디모데에게 성경을 연구하라고 촉구합니다. “네가 진리의 말씀을 옳게 분별하며 부끄러울 것이 없는 일꾼으로 인정된 자로 자신을 하나님 앞에 드리기를 힘쓰라”(디모데후서 2:15).

내가 올바른 수영 기법을 배우고 연습하면서 더 낫게 수영을 할 수 있었듯이, 우리의 영적 삶에서 성경에 나오는 단어와 개념을 배우고 이해함으로써 하나님을 아는 지식이 자라나 진리와 거짓을 분별하며 지혜를 얻을 수 있게 됩니다. 성경말씀을 읽으면서 계속 자라나 “모든 선한 일을 행할 능력을 갖추도록”(3:17) 합시다.

GROWING OUR KNOWLEDGE OF GOD

As soon as I jumped into the pool, my goggles filled with water, and I could barely see. Despite having no formal swimming instruction, I slowly persevered for the two laps of a race I had entered on a whim. Years later, after taking lessons and learning the proper breathing and swimming techniques, I enjoyed learning all four competitive swim strokes.

What a difference it makes when we have the proper training. The same applies to reading the Bible. When we understand the context and meaning of what we’re reading, we can grow in our faith and properly apply it to our lives.

Paul wanted Timothy to stand firm in his faith, avoid quarrels, and not be deceived by false teachers. In his final letter, the apostle urged Timothy to study the Scriptures: “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth” (2 TIMOTHY 2:15).

As I learned and practiced proper swimming techniques, I became a better swimmer. In our spiritual walk, as we learn and understand the words and concepts in the Bible, we grow in our knowledge of God—enabling us to distinguish truth from falsehood and gain wisdom. As we read Scripture, let’s continue to grow “so that [we] may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (3:17).

하나님의 말씀은 영원히 서리라

1900년대 초, 성공한 철강 사업가 찰스 슈왑은 뉴욕시에서 가장 호화 로운 저택을 짓기로 결심합니다. 1906년에 완공된 그의 리버사이드 드라이브 저택은 프랑스 대저택에서 영감을 받아 도시의 한 구획 전체에 걸쳐 숲이 무성한 정원과 웅장한 홀, 그리고 호화로운 실내 장식을 갖추었습니다. 이 저택은 곧 맨해튼을 상징하게 될 고층 아파트들과 극명한 대조를 이루었습니다. 그러나 그 웅장한 저택은 슈왑이 죽은 후 구매자를 찾는 데 어려움을 겪었습니다. 너무 크고 너무 많은 비용이 들어 당시 부동산 시장의 흐름과 맞지 않았기 때문입니다. 결국 리버사이드 드라이브 저택은 1948년에 철거되어 그 집주인과 함께 사라져 버렸습니다.

우리는 부와 야망과 저택과 같은 세상의 것들이 결국은 없어질 것임을 잘 알고 있습니다. 이사야 40장은 “모든 육체는 풀이요 그의 모든 아름다움은 들의 꽃과 같다”(6절)고 일깨워 줍니다. 이사야는 믿음이 없어서 하나님의 징계를 받는 사람들에게 그렇게 썼습니다. 하나님은 그들의 잘못을 고치신 후에 위로해 주실 것입니다(1-2절). 선지자가 사람과 풀과 꽃에 대해 말한 것은 사실입니다(6-7절). 그러나 하나님 자신의 진리는 사람들, 저택, 부와 야망과 명예보다 오래 지속될 것입니다. 그렇습니다. “우리 하나님의 말씀은 영원히 존재합니다”(8절, 현대인의 성경).

우리가 얼마나 연약한 존재인지 명심하는 것이 좋습니다. 그리고 하나님의 말씀이 영원하다는 것을 기억하는 것이 지혜롭습니다.

GOD’S WORD ENDURES

In the early 1900s, successful steel businessman Charles Schwab decided to build perhaps the most lavish mansion in New York City. Completed in 1906, his Riverside Drive estate took its inspiration from French chateaus and spanned an entire city block, with lush gardens, grand halls, and opulent interiors. It stood in stark contrast to the rising apartment buildings that would soon define Manhattan. Despite its grandeur, the estate struggled to find a buyer after Schwab’s death. The mansion was too large, too costly, and out of step with real estate trends. Riverside Drive estate was demolished in 1948. Both the mansion and the man faded away.

It’s easy for us to point to earthly realities like wealth, ambition, and mansions as destined to fade away. The words of Isaiah 40 remind us, “All people are like grass, and all their faithfulness is like the flowers of the field” (V. 6). Isaiah wrote to people enduring God’s discipline for their faithlessness. After He had corrected them, God would comfort them (VV. 1-2). What the prophet says about people, grass, and flowers is true (VV. 6-7). But the truth of God Himself? It will outlast men and mansions and wealth and ambition and accolades. Yes, “the word of our God endures forever” (V. 8).

It’s good to keep in mind how fragile we are. And it’s wise to remember God’s word is everlasting.

조니 에어릭슨 타다는 어머니가 돌아가신 후 우리의 몸이 어떻게 예수님의 임재라는 보물을 담는 “질그릇”과 같은지 생각해 보았습니다. 조니는 질그릇 대신 우리의 육신을 묘사할 현대적인 비유로 골판지 상자를 떠올리면서, 모서리가 닳고 구부러진, 돌아가신 어머니의 “상자”가 이제는 비어 있다는 것을 알았습니다. 그러나 그 상자는 모두가 귀하게 여겼던 “그리스도의 보배로운 영이 거하셨던 그릇”이었음을 떠올렸습니다.

JESUS REVEALED IN US

After Joni Eareckson Tada’s mother died, Joni thought about how our bodies are like “jars of clay” that hold the treasure of Christ’s presence. She mused about a modern equivalent to describe our earthly bodies—a cardboard box. She knew her mother’s “box,” with its worn-out corners and bends, was now empty. But, she reflected, it was a box they’d treasured, “the vessel in which the treasure of the Spirit of Christ had dwelt.”

As Joni notes, those who follow Jesus let Him shine through them, often in spectacular ways through the creases and holes as their boxes to collapse with age. In this she followed Paul’s words about the treasure appearing in “jars of clay” because it would reveal that “this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us” (2 CORINTHIANS 4:7). Although Paul was “hard pressed” and “perplexed” with what he suffered, he was not “crushed” or “destroyed” (VV. 8-9). Through his sufferings in his body, he knew that Christ’s life would be revealed.

How’s your cardboard “box”? You might feel the creases grow larger as you groan under the weight of pain or disease. Know, however, that Jesus is being revealed in your body (V. 10). As you submit to Him, He’ll shine His light through you, so that those who are in darkness may receive His love and His life.

하나님의 전신 갑주를 입자

나피와 캄란은 군사 쿠데타에 가담하여 여러 해 동안의 전투 끝에 승리한 후 수도에서 사무직을 맡아 일하게 되었습니다. 그러나 그 일도 잘 진행되지 않아 할 일이 별로 없었던 그들은 온라인에 접속해 보게 되었습니다. 나피는 “나를 포함한 많은 동료들이 인터넷, 특히 트위터에 중독되었다”고 고백합니다. 캄란은 덧붙여 말합니다. “진짜 시험과 도전은 [전쟁] 당시가 아니라 오히려 지금입니다. 그때는 단순했는데 지금은 모든 것이 너무 복잡합니다.” 그는 인터넷에서 보게 된 많은 유혹들을 언급하며, “많은 것들이... 겉보기에 좋아 보이지만 실제로는 지독한 함정이었습니다.”라고 말했습니다.

PUTTING ON GOD’S ARMOR

Nafi and Kamran joined a military coup. They fought for years and, when their side won, were given desk jobs in the capital. It’s not going well. There’s little to do so they go online. Nafi says that many of his comrades, “including me, are addicted to the internet, especially Twitter.” Kamran adds, “The real test and challenge was not during the [war]. Rather, it’s now. At that time, it was simple, but now things are much more complicated.” Citing the various temptations he found on the Web, he added, “Many . . . have fallen into these seemingly sweet, but actually bitter traps.”

Kamran’s right that we’re most vulnerable to let down our guard when we’re at ease, just as he was after a war. In Scripture, we find a similar caution in the story of David’s adultery with Bathsheba. It all began when he sent others off to war but remained behind in the capital. Like an undisciplined man scrolling the internet, David “got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace” (2 SAMUEL 11:2). He put himself in harm’s way. And when “he saw a woman bathing,” he didn’t turn away (VV. 2-3).

We avoid the postwar letdown by remembering we’re still at war. “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but . . . against the spiritual forces of evil.” So, as He helps us, we “put on the full armor of God” and prepare to “stand [our] ground” (EPHESIANS 6:12-13).

생명의 빛

1905년, 한 꾀죄죄한 청년이 스위스 베른의 아파트에 틀어박혀 우주의 본질에 관한 복잡한 가설 증명에 몰두하고 있었습니다. 이 물리학자는 광적인 집중력을 발휘해 여러가지 계산을 계속 반복했습니다. 머리를 쥐어짜는 4개월이 지난 후, 이 사람은 우주가 어떻게 작동하고 있는지에 대한 기존 지식의 상당 부분을 새롭게 썼습니다. 이 사람 알버트 아인슈타인은 당시 스물 여섯 살이었습니다.

그런 위대한 과학적 지성을 가진 아인슈타인도 이런 말을 했습니다. “알면 알수록 내가 얼마나 더 모르는지를 깨닫게 된다.”

성경은 창조물에 반영된 하나님의 위대함을 자주 언급합니다. 시편 기자는 “하늘이 하나님의 영광을 선포한다”(시편 19:1)고 했으며, 욥은 아인슈타인보다 훨씬 오래 전에 “네가 하나님의 오묘함을 어찌 능히 측량하며 전능자의 한계를 어찌 능히 알겠느냐 그것이 하늘보다 높다”(욥기 11:7-8)라고 했습니다.

그러나 하나님의 창조의 영광은 우주의 광대함보다도 더 위대합니다. “태초에 말씀이 계시니라... 말씀이 육신이 되어”(요한복음 1:1, 14). 하나님께서 예수 그리스도의 인격으로 인류 속으로 들어오신 그 특별한 행위는 수학적으로 도무지 계산할 수 없습니다. 하나님은 그저 우리가 알기 시작할 수도 없는 우주 “저 멀리” 계신 분이 아니라, 여기 우리 곁에 함께 계시며, 우리 가운데 계신 말씀이시며, 우리가 개인적으로 친밀하게 알 수 있는 생명의 빛(1:4)이십니다.

THE LIGHT OF LIFE

In 1905 a scruffy young man holed up in his apartment in Bern, Switzerland, engaging in complex thought experiments regarding the nature of the universe. With frenzied focus, the physicist worked and reworked his calculations. Four mind-crunching months later, this man had rewritten much of what was known about how the world works. The man was Albert Einstein. He was twenty-six.

Yet despite possessing a great scientific mind, Einstein said, “The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don’t know.”

The Bible frequently points to the majesty of God reflected in His creation: “The heavens declare the glory of God” (PSALM 19:1), and Job predated Einstein’s words: “Can you probe the limits of the Almighty? They are higher than the heavens” (JOB 11:7-8).

But God’s creation glory is even greater than the expanse of universes: “In the beginning was the Word. . . .The Word became flesh” (JOHN 1:1, 14). There are no mathematical calculations that can explain God’s extraordinary act of entering humanity in the person of Jesus Christ. God is not just “out there” in a universe we cannot begin to know, but He’s here alongside us, the Word among us, the light of life (1:4) whom we can know personally and intimately.

기도에 힘쓰라

증조할머니 클라라가 하늘나라로 떠나면서 남긴, 정기적으로 기도해준 사람들의 이름이 담긴 10피트(약 3미터) 길이의 기도 목록은 집안의 가보가 되었습니다. 거기에는 할머니가 계속 기도해 준 가깝고 먼 친척들과 친구들, 그리고 할머니의 친구들이 기도해 준 사람들, 유명한 전도자들과 목사들, 사역자들의 이름이 타이프 되어 있었고, 새로운 가족들과 특별한 기도 제목들은 여백에 손 글씨로 적혀 있었습니다. 내 어머니의 이름도 아주 어린 아이였을 때 거기에 기록되어 있는 것을 보고 나는 감회가 새로웠습니다.

바울 사도는 초대 교회에 편지를 보내 “소망 중에 즐거워하며 환난 중에 참으며 기도에 항상 힘쓰라”(로마서 12:12)고 했습니다. 바울은 신자들에게 악을 미워하고 선을 사랑하며(9절), 존경하기를 서로 먼저 하고(10절), 열심을 품고 하나님을 섬기며(11절), 손님 대접하기를 힘쓰라(13절)는 등, 행동으로 사랑을 드러내는 일들을 많이 하라고 권면했습니다. 그러나 우리 안에 역사하시는 그리스도의 사랑이 없다면 이러한 선행들도 다 헛될 것입니다. 그럴 때 우리는 기도에 힘써야 합니다. 바울은 친구들에게 “[그와] 힘을 같이하여 [그를] 위해 하나님께 빌어”(15:30) 줄 것을 요청했습니다. 바울의 기도 제목에는 그를 반대하는 사람들로부터 안전하게 보호받고 예루살렘에서 호의적으로 받아들여질 수 있도록(31-32절) 구체적으로 요청한 것도 있었습니다. 아마 그런 기도 제목들이 로마에 있는 어느 증조할머니 같은 분의 개인 기도 목록에 있었을 지도 모르겠습니다.

기도는 우리가 “선으로 악을 이기는”(12:21) 삶을 살 수 있도록 힘을 더해 줍니다. 비록 우리가 바라는 결과를 항상 볼 수는 없더라도, 기도는 다음 세대를 위한 신실한 믿음의 유산을 만들어냅니다.

FAITHFUL IN PRAYER

After great-grandma Clara passed away, her ten-foot-long prayer list of people for whom she prayed regularly became a family heirloom. On it were typewritten many extended family members, friends, people her friends were praying for, as well as the names of high-profile evangelists, pastors, and ministries. New family members and specific prayer requests are handwritten in the margins. I became emotional seeing my mother’s name on the list, added when she was just a child.

The apostle Paul wrote to the early church, “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer” (ROMANS 12:12). In his letter, Paul exhorted believers to do many things that displayed love in action—hating evil and loving good (V. 9), honoring others above yourself (V. 10), passionately serving God (V. 11), and practicing hospitality (V. 13). These good works would be empty without the love of Christ working in us. That’s where faithful prayer comes in. Paul called his friends to “join [him] in [his] struggle by praying to God for [him]” (15:30). Specific requests for safety from opposers and a favorable reception in Jerusalem (VV. 31-32) were on Paul’s list. Perhaps they ended up on the private prayer list of a great-grandma in Rome too.

Prayer empowers us to live in a way that “overcomes evil with good” (12:21). Though we may not always see the outcome, it creates a legacy of faithfulness for generations to come.

믿음으로 나아감

제이디는 아프리카 몇몇 나라를 여행하며 놀라운 광경을 목격했습니다. 잠비아 동부에서 보낸 그의 문자 메시지에는 믿음이 충만한 그곳 여성들이 복음 사역 3개년 계획을 발표하고 있는 사진이 여러 장 포함되어 있었습니다. “제 인생에서 들어본 가장 강력한 전략 계획 발표 중 하나입니다. 그들은 화이트보드 대신 흙바닥에 그림을 그렸고, 멋진 계획서 복사본을 나눠주는 대신 두 사람이 들고 있는 포스터 크기 만한 구겨진 종이에 그 계획을 보여 주었습니다. 정말 대단했습니다!”

무엇이 오늘 당신으로 하여금 예수님을 바라보게 만들고 있습니까? 개인적인 필요 때문입니까, 아니면 가족이나 공동체의 필요 때문입니까? 당신을 예수님께 나아가도록 이끄는 것이 무엇이든 그대로 예수님께 나아가십시오. 제대로 못 걷는다고 느껴지더라도 나아가십시오. 당신의 믿음의 크기가 중요한 것이 아니기 때문에 그분께 나아갈 수 있습니다. 중요한 것은 당신의 믿음의 대상입니다. 예수님, 오직 예수님뿐입니다.

FUELED BY FAITH

J.D. witnessed amazing sights on his trip to several African nations. His text messages to us from Eastern Zambia included several pictures of faith-filled women who presented their three-year gospel ministry plan. “It is one of the most powerful strategic plan presentations I’ve ever heard in my life. Instead of a whiteboard, they drew in the dirt. Instead of handing out nice copies of what they were going to do, they displayed their plan on poster-sized crumpled paper held up by two of them. It was just incredible!”

They were demonstrating the kind of faith that Jesus values. Matthew 15:21-28 records another example. A daughter’s condition drove a woman to seek Him. “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly” (V. 22). Her “great faith” (V. 28) in Jesus contrasted with the faithlessness of the Jewish leadership whose hearts were far from God (V. 8). While Christ recognized the outward pedigree of those belonging to Abraham, His commendation was for a gentile woman who possessed the faith of Abraham.

What compels you to look to Jesus today? A personal, family or community need? Whatever prompts you to go to Jesus, go—even if you feel that you’re limping. Go to Him because it’s not the size of your faith that matters. What matters is the object of your faith: Jesus and Jesus alone.
