하나님께서 행하신 일

댄 월리스는 헬라어를 가르치며 고대 사본들을 목록화 하기 위해 세계 곳곳을 다닙니다. 이런 과업을 한창 진행하던 그가 뇌에 부종을 일으키는 뇌염에 걸렸습니다. 댄은 그 후 1년 동안 휠체어에 의지해 다섯 개의 병원과 메이요 클리닉을 오가며 치료를 받았습니다. 그는 목숨은 건졌지만 외국어 지식을 포함한 기억의 대부분을 잃었습니다. 하지만 그는 포기하지 않았고 다시 강단으로 돌아왔습니다. 댄은 이렇게 말합니다. “헬라어를 다시 배워야 했습니다. 그래서 바로 내가 1년 전에 출판했던 교재를 가지고 나 자신에게 헬라어를 다시 가르쳐야 했습니다!”

과거의 자기 자신에게서 헬라어를 배운다는 것이 묘하게 들릴 수 있지만, 똑같은 진리를 반복해서 배우는 것은 얼마든지 있을 수 있는 일입니다. 이것이 바로 하나님께서 우리에게 신명기를 주신 이유입니다. 신명기는 “두 번째 율법” 이라는 뜻으로, 구약에서 하나님께서 주신 율법과 명령을 복습시켜주는 이 책에 아주 잘 어울리는 제목입니다. 신명기는 십계명을 다시 들려주고(5장), 하나님께서 이스라엘 백성을 어떻게 이집트에서 구원하시고, 광야를 지나게 하시며, 약속의 땅으로 인도하셨는지를 기억하라고 거듭 촉구합니다. 그들은 그 구원의 이야기를 늘 기억해야 했습니다. 그러지 않으면 그들의 성공이 교만을 낳아 그들을 “애굽 땅 종 되었던 집에서 이끌어 내신 하나님 여호와”(8:14)를 잊어버릴 수 있기 때문이었습니다.

하나님께서는 당신을 어떤 광야에서 구원해 내셨습니까? 주님은 당신의 삶을 어떻게 채워주셨습니까? 잠시 멈추고 생각해 보면 우리에게는 하나님께 거듭해서 감사하고 찬양할 충분한 이유가 차고 넘칩니다.

WHAT GOD HAS DONE

Dan Wallace teaches Greek and travels the world cataloguing ancient manuscripts. At the height of his career, he caught encephalitis, a disease that causes the brain to swell. Dan spent the next year in a wheelchair, traveling to five hospitals and the Mayo Clinic. He survived, though he lost most of his memory, including his knowledge of foreign languages. Yet he persisted and returned to the classroom. Dan says, “I had to relearn Greek, and I taught myself Greek using the textbook that I myself had published the year before!”

It’s strange to learn Greek from yourself, but it’s not unusual to learn the same truths over again. This is why God gave us Deuteronomy. Its name means “second law,” a fitting title for a book that reviews the laws and commands given by God in the Old Testament. Deuteronomy gives the Ten Commandments again (CH. 5) and repeatedly urges God’s people to remember how He delivered them from Egypt, led them through the wilderness, and brought them to the promised land. They needed to remember their salvation story, lest their success might make them proud and they’d “forget the Lord . . . [their] God, who brought [them] out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery” (8:14).

What wilderness has God brought you out of? How has He provided for you? When we pause to think, we have ample reason to thank and praise Him—again and again.

잃어버린 자를 찾으시는 예수님

“나는 평생 이 아이를 찾으러 다녔습니다.” 빌 코데스는 남동생 로버트와 재회한 후 눈물을 글썽이며 이렇게 말했습니다. 어려운 가정형편 때문에 로버트가 생후 4개월이었을 때 헤어진 이 형제는 그 후 80년 동안 만나지 못하고 살았습니다. 그러던 중 빌의 손녀가 마침내 그가 평생 잊지 못하고 애타게 찾아 헤매 온 어릴 적 동생을 찾도록 도와 준 것입니다.

누가복음 15장에서 예수님은 소중한 물건이나 사람을 포기하지 않고 끝까지 찾으러 다니는 사람들을 세가지 비유로 말씀하셨습니다. 그중 잃어 버린 양의 비유에서 예수님은 자신을 추궁하는 바리새인들에게 이렇게 말씀 하셨습니다. 목자가 백 마리의 양 가운데 한 마리를 잃으면 “아흔아홉 마리를 들에 두고 그 잃은 것을 찾아내기까지 찾아다니지 아니하겠느냐”(4절). 이 말씀의 요지는 무엇일까요? “아흔아홉 마리”로 비유되는 바리새인들은 자신들이 하나님 앞에서 의롭다고 생각했지만, 실상은 그렇지 않았습니다. 그리스도께서는 죄에서 돌이켜 하나님의 용서를 구하는 “죄인 한 사람이 회개하면 하늘에서는 회개할 것 없는 의인 아흔아홉으로 말미암아 기뻐하는 것보다 더하리라”(7절)고 그들에게 말씀하셨습니다.

우리의 크신 목자 예수님은 우리를 찾는 발걸음을 결코 멈추지 않으시며, 다른 이들을 찾는 일 또한 멈추지 않으실 것입니다. 우리가 회개하고 그리스도 안에서 구원을 얻으면 “잃었다가 얻었기에”(32절) 기쁨이 하늘나라에, 곧 하나님의 마음에 넘치게 됩니다. 그리고 우리를 애타게 찾으시던 분에게 발견 되었을 때, 우리는 얼마나 큰 기쁨을 누리게 될까요!

JESUS LOOKS FOR THE LOST

“I’ve been looking for him all my life.” With tears in his eyes, Bill Cordes spoke those words after being reunited with his younger brother, Robert. The men hadn’t seen each other for eighty years after being split up when Robert was just four months old due to a troubled family situation. Bill’s granddaughter helped him finally find his baby brother—someone he’d never stopped thinking about or seeking to find.

In Luke 15, Jesus told three parables of people who refused to stop looking for something or someone precious. In the parable of the lost sheep, He said to the Pharisees who were challenging Him, if a shepherd lost one sheep of his hundred, wouldn’t he “leave the ninety-nine . . . and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?” (V. 4). His point? The Pharisees—the “ninety-nine”—thought they were right with God, but they weren’t. And Christ told them, there’s “more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents”—who turns from sin to God’s forgiveness—than for those who don’t think they need to (V. 7).

Our Great Shepherd never stops looking for us, and He’ll never stop seeking others as well. When we repent and receive salvation in Christ, there’s great joy in heaven—in God’s heart—because what “was lost . . . is found” (V. 32). And what joy we experience in being found by the one who sought us!

온전한 마음

샌프란시스코 자이언츠 야구팀의 선수였던 드루 로빈슨은 정신적으로 심한 기복을 겪었습니다. 부상을 당해 마이너리그로 강등될 때마다 우울증에 빠지곤 했습니다. ‘다른 선수로 대체되는 건 아닐까?’, ‘회복될 수 있을까?’ 그는 집에서 TV로 동료들이 경기하는 모습을 보면서 “완전히 고립되고 소외되고 외롭다고 느꼈다”고 말했습니다. 팬데믹 기간에 극단적 선택의 위기까지 겪은 후, 그는 자이언츠팀의 전담 심리치료사에게 자신의 문제를 털어놓았습니다. 그는 상담을 통해 큰 도움을 받았고, 다른 선수들도 정신적 어려움이 있으면 숨기지 말고 가지고 나오라고 적극 권장했습니다. 현재 그는 자이언츠의 전임 정신건강 전도사로 활동하며, 신체적으로 강인한 선수들이 강한 정신력도 갖추도록 돕고 있습니다. 최악의 상황을 이겨낸 로빈슨은 이제 다른 사람들에게 힘을 주는 일에 삶의 목적을 두고 있습니다.

성경은 온전한 마음을 지혜로운 목표일 뿐만 아니라, 사랑의 하나님이 주시는 선물이라고 말합니다. 이사야 선지자는 하나님에 대해 이렇게 노래 했습니다. “주께서 심지가 견고한 자를 평강하고 평강하도록 지키시리니 이는 그가 주를 신뢰함이니이다”(26:3). 크나큰 환란의 때에 얼마나 위로를 주는 약속의 말씀입니까! 죄와 반역으로 하나님을 떠난 그분의 백성들은 생각과 마음도 혼란에 빠졌습니다. 그래서 이사야는 이렇게 권면했습니다. “너희는 여호와를 영원히 신뢰하라 주 여호와는 영원한 반석이심이로다”(4절).

불안한 시기를 지날 때, 우리 역시 인생여정 속에서 하나님을 신뢰할 수 있습니다. 우리의 마음을 그분께 두면, 날마다 우리의 평안이 되시는 예수님을 신뢰하게 됩니다.

A SOUND MIND

As a player for the San Francisco Giants baseball team, Drew Robinson knew mental highs and lows. Whenever injuries demoted him to the Giants’ minor league affiliate, he’d fall into a depressive state. Will I be replaced? Will I recover? At home, watching teammates playing on TV, “I just felt completely isolated, alienated and lonely.” After a suicide attempt during the pandemic, he shared his troubles with the Giants’ team psychologist. He got so much help he urged other players to come forth with their mental struggles. Now he’s the Giants’ full-time mental health advocate, urging physically tough players to seek strong mental health too. After surviving his worst, Robinson believes his purpose is to encourage others.

The Bible regards a sound mind as a wise goal but also a gift from a loving God. In song, the prophet Isaiah said of Him, “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!” (26:3 NLT). What a consoling promise during a time of great trouble! Sin and rebellion had turned the hearts of God’s people away from Him, leaving their thoughts and minds in turmoil. So Isaiah urged them, “Trust in the Lord always, for the Lord God is the eternal Rock” (V. 4 NLT).

During our anxious times, we too can trust God in our journey. Fixing our minds on Him points our trust to our daily peace—Jesus.

느려도 끈기있는 영적 성장

사구아로 선인장은 빨리 자라지 않습니다. 세상에서 가장 척박한 사막 기후에서도 번성하는 이 식물은 일생에 걸쳐 꾸준하고 묵묵한 성장으로 천천히 뿌리를 내립니다. 키는 첫 10년 동안 1.5 인치 정도만 자랍니다. 꽃을 피우는데는 35년이 걸리고, 가지가 뻗어나오기까지는 50년이 걸릴 수도 있습니다. 그러나 이 선인장은 최대 200년까지 살 수 있고, 높이는 45피트(약 14미터), 무게는 2톤에 이를 수 있습니다. 평생 동안 무려 4천만 개의 씨앗을 맺습니다. 이렇게 사구아로 선인장의 성장은 느리지만 그만큼 강인한 생명력을 가지고 있습니다.

예수님은 믿는 자가 하나님 나라에서 어떻게 자라는지를 농사의 비유로 설명하셨습니다. 여러 종류의 땅에 뿌려진 씨앗에 대해 말씀하시며, 예수님은 마지막 씨앗이 “좋은 땅에 떨어져 백 배의 결실을 맺었다”(누가복음 8:8)고 결론 지으셨습니다. “좋은 땅에” 떨어진 씨앗이란 “착하고 좋은 마음으로 말씀을 듣고 지키어 인내로 결실하는 자”(15절)라고 설명하셨습니다. 풍성한 수확과 성장은 하나님의 지혜를 받아들이고 성령께서 자라게 하시기를 인내심을 가지고 기다릴 때 가능한 것입니다.

이것이 영적 성장이 이루어지는 일반적인 방식입니다. 때로는 폭발적으로 성장하는 시기도 있겠지만, 우리의 진전은 대부분 하나님의 지혜를 받아들이고, 그분의 길을 따라가며, 성령님이 역사하시는 것을 묵묵히 바라보는 가운데 천천히 이루어집니다.

SLOW, PATIENT GROWTH IN GOD

A saguaro cactus is never in a hurry to grow. Flourishing amid some of the most barren desert climates in the world, the plant slowly takes root over a lifetime of steady, plodding growth. Over its first decade, a Saguaro may grow as little as 1.5 inches. It may take thirty-five years to flower, and its arms can take fifty years to form. The cactus, however, can live up to two hundred years, reach forty-five feet high, and weigh up to two tons. Over a lifetime, it yields a remarkable forty million seeds. A Saguaro’s growth is slow, but resilient.

Jesus used agricultural imagery to describe how His believers grow in the kingdom of God. Telling a parable of seeds sowed among various types of soil, He concluded with a description of how the final seeds “fell on good soil . . . and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown” (LUKE 8:8). Christ explained how those seeds “in the good soil” are ones who “[hear] the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience” (V. 15 ESV). There’s a strong yield, abundant growth—but it only comes when we receive the wisdom of God and then patiently allow the Holy Spirit to produce growth in us.

This is how spiritual growth typically works. We may have explosive spurts, but our progress will typically be slow, as we receive God’s wisdom, follow His ways, and watch the Spirit work.

성령의 역사

주님은 나의 최고봉’을 쓴 오스왈드 챔버스는 한 작은 성서 대학을 운영하던 시절 거기서 일하던 한 부부가 학교 물품을 훔치고 있다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 보통같으면 잘못을 직접 바로잡는 것이 옳겠지만 오스왈드는 그들을 직접 추궁하지 않기로 결정하고, 대신 하나님께서 그들의 생각과 마음을 깨우쳐 달라고 기도했습니다. 몇 주 후 그들은 모든 것을 털어놓으며 깊이 뉘우쳤습니다. 오스왈드는 이렇게 말했습니다. “사실 다 알고 있었지만 하나님의 영이 직접 두 분에게 말씀해주시기를 기다렸습니다.” 감동과 놀라움을 금치못한 그 부부는 예수님께 그들의 삶을 내어드리게 되었습니다. 예수님은 돌아가시기 전에 이렇게 성령이 역사하실 것을 제자들에게 약속하셨습니다. “진리의 영이 오시면 너희를 모든 진리로 인도하시리라” (요한복음 16:13). 제자들은 예수님이 떠나신다는 생각에 슬퍼했지만, 예수님은 그것이 오히려 그들에게 유익이라며 안심시키셨습니다. 왜냐하면 “보혜사” 즉 성령께서 오실 것이기 때문이었습니다(7절). 하나님은 성령을 통해 우리의 죄를 깨닫게 하십니다. “그가 와서 죄에 대하여, 의에 대하여, 심판에 대하여 세상을 책망하시리라”(8절). 또한 성령은 사람들을 “모든 진리로” 인도하십니다 (13절). 성령은 오늘도 계속 일하시며 우리가 “실족하지” 않고(1절) 영생을 누리게 하십니다. 하나님은 우리가 잘못했을 때 깨닫게 하시고, 슬플 때 위로하시며, 하나님을 예배하도록 우리에게 보혜사를 보내주셨습니다.

THE HOLY SPIRIT’S WORK

When Oswald Chambers, author of My Utmost for His Highest, ran a small Bible college, he learned that a couple who worked there was stealing supplies. Although at times it’s right to address wrongdoing, Oswald decided in this instance not to confront them, instead asking God to bring the matter to their hearts and minds. After several weeks, they came clean, expressing regret. “I’ve known about it all along,” Oswald said, “but we wanted to wait until God’s Spirit spoke to you.” Moved and astonished, the couple surrendered their lives to Jesus.

God’s Spirit at work is what Jesus promised His friends before He died: “When he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth” (JOHN 16:13). The disciples grieved at the thought of Jesus going away, but He reassured them that this was for their good. Then “the Advocate,” God’s Holy Spirit, would come to them (V. 7). Through the Spirit, God convicts people of their sin: “He will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment” (V. 8). He also guides people “into all the truth” (V. 13).

The Spirit continues His work today so we too might not “fall away” (V. 1) but rather enjoy life eternal. God gives us the Advocate to convict us when we’re wrong, comfort us when we’re sad, and lead us to worship God.

예수님의 재림을 기다리며

어릴 적 나는 미국의 패스트푸드 체인점인 칙필레에 가서 감자튀김과 아이스티 먹는 것을 무척 좋아했습니다. 성인이 되어 다른 주로 이사하고는 수백 마일 안에 칙필레 매장이 하나도 없다는 사실에 얼마나 충격을 받았는지 모릅니다! 차로 가족여행을 갈 때면 일부러 칙필레가 있는 쪽으로 경로를 짜기도 했고, 언젠가는 우리 집 근처에도 칙필레 매장이 생기기를 늘 바랬습니다.

갈망. 우리는 모두 무언가를 간절히 원해본 경험이 있습니다. 좋아하는 식당처럼 때로는 우리가 그토록 바라는 것이 사실상 우리에게 꼭 필요한 것이 아닐 때도 있습니다. 그러나 어떤 경우에는, 우리의 갈망이 그보다 훨씬 깊고 절박한 염원일 때가 있습니다.

바울은 빌립보 성도들에게 보내는 서신에서 그들이 가장 간절히 바라는 것에 따라, 곧 그리스도의 재림과 그의 나라가 온전히 임하는 것을 바라보며 살아가라고 권면했습니다(빌립보서 3:20). 예수님께서 다시 오시면 모든 것이 회복되고 믿는 자들을 주님과 같은 몸의 형체로 변화시키실 것입니다(21절).

바울은 성도들에게 일시적인 만족을 주는 것을 갈망하지 말고, 앞으로 다가올 세상, 곧 더 이상 고통이 없고, 예수님을 마주 보게 될 날을 “간절히 기다리라”(20절)고 말합니다.

우리의 갈망이 언젠가 채워질 것임을 아는 것은, 매일 그리스도를 위해 살아갈 수 있는 든든한 희망을 줍니다(12-14절).

얼마전 우리 집에서 몇 마일 떨어진 곳에 칙필레가 문을 열었습니다. 이것은 훨씬 더 중요한 그 갈망 역시 언젠가 온전히 이루어질 것임을 일깨워주는 작음 알림처럼 느껴졌습니다. 그 날을 우리는 기다립니다.

LONGING FOR JESUS’ RETURN

When I was young, I loved going to Chick-fil-A, a US-based fast-food restaurant, for waffle fries and sweet tea. When, as an adult, I moved to another state, I was shocked to discover there weren’t any locations for hundreds of miles! On family road trips, we’d even plan our routes to allow for stops at Chick-fil-A, all the while hoping someday one would open closer to home.

Longing. We all experience it. Sometimes we don’t actually need what we long for, such as a favorite restaurant. Other times, our longings reflect deeper, more desperate yearnings.

Writing to the Philippian believers, Paul reminded them to live their lives in light of their deepest longing—Christ’s return and the full coming of His kingdom (PHILIPPIANS 3:20). Jesus’ coming would make everything whole and transform believers to be like Him (V. 21).

Rather than merely longing for what can’t bring lasting satisfaction, Paul says it’s this coming reality that believers “eagerly await” (V. 20)—the day when there will be no more suffering, when we’ll see Jesus face-to-face.

Knowing our longings will one day be satisfied gives us the hope we need to live for Christ each day (VV. 12-14).

A Chick-fil-A recently opened a few miles from my house, a small reminder that a much more important longing will one day be fulfilled. Until then, we wait.

다윗을 건지심

고교 레슬링 경기 준결승에서 데이브는 오른쪽 갈비뼈에 금이 가는 부상을 입었습니다. 그 경기에서는 이겼으나 갈비뼈 부상을 입은 채 어떻게 결승전을 치를지 걱정이 되었습니다.

결승전에서 그는 부상을 입지 않은 왼쪽 다리를 절면서 경기장에 올랐 습니다. 그러자 상대 선수는 경기 내내 데이브의 왼쪽 다리만 공략했습니다. 결국 데이브는 다친 오른쪽을 잘 보호하며 우승을 차지했습니다.

또 다른 “데이브”가 있습니다. 성경 속의 다윗도 어려운 상황에서 벗어 나려고 속임수를 사용했습니다. 자신을 죽이려고 하는 사울 왕을 피해 도망치던 다윗은 이스라엘의 적국으로 피신했지만 그 나라의 왕은 얼마 지나지 않아 다윗이 히브리 백성의 전쟁 영웅이라는 사실을 알게 되었습니다(사무엘상 21:11). 생명의 위협을 느낀 다윗은 “미친 체하고 대문짝에 그적거리며 침을 수염에 흘렸습니다”(13절). 그의 계략은 통했습니다(14-15절).

이런 행동이 옳은 것인지에 대해서는 논란이 있을 수 있습니다. 그러나 시편 34편은 다윗의 상황을 새로운 시각으로 조명해줍니다. 시편에서 다윗은 자신을 위기에서 구해낸 것은 자신의 얄팍한 속임수가 아닌 하나님의 은혜라고 고백합니다. 그는 노래했습니다. “내가 여호와께 간구하매...내 모든 두려움에서 나를 건지셨도다”(4절). “이 곤고한 자가 부르짖으매...그의 모든 환난에서 구원하셨도다”(6절). 블레셋 사람들 속에 들어가 안전을 도모하려했던 다윗은 결국 하나님께로 돌이켰을 때 비로소 유일하고 믿을 수 있는 피난처를 받견했던 것입니다(8, 22절).

DAVID’S DELIVERANCE

In the semifinals of his high school wrestling tournament, Dave cracked a rib on his right side. He won the match but wondered how he’d survive the championship with a damaged ribcage.

In the finals, Dave limped out to the mat on his left, uninjured leg. So his opponent targeted Dave’s left leg throughout the match. Dave protected his right side and won.

Another “Dave” used deception to extract himself from a tough situation. David had been fleeing a murderous King Saul. He found refuge among Israel’s enemies, but word soon got to the enemy king that David was a Hebrew war hero (1 SAMUEL 21:11). Fearing for his life, David “pretended to be insane . . . making marks on the doors of the gate and letting saliva run down his beard” (V. 13). The ploy worked (VV. 14-15).

Good people can debate such tactics and arrive at different conclusions. But Psalm 34 sheds light on David’s experience. There, David credited not his deception but God for his deliverance. He sang, “I sought the Lord, and he . . . delivered me from all my fears” (V. 4). And again, “This poor man called, and the Lord . . . saved him out of all his troubles” (V. 6). David had sought safety with the Philistines, but he found his only reliable refuge when he turned to God (VV. 8, 22).

참된 보화

제임스는 밧줄의 한쪽 끝에 강한 자석을 묶어 뉴욕의 한 호수에 던졌습니다. 그 “자석 낚시꾼”은 진흙투성이의 백 달러 지폐가 다발로 가득 찬 지저분한 금고를 건져올리고는 깜짝 놀랐습니다. 경찰은 그 돈이 범죄에 연루되지 않았기 때문에 제임스가 가져도 된다고 말했습니다. 지폐 중 일부는 상태가 너무 안 좋아서 진위 여부를 확인할 수 없었지만, 그는 집을 사는 데 보태기 위해 가능한 한 많은 돈을 복원하고 싶었습니다.

숨겨진 보화를 찾는 것은 흥미진진한 일이고 예수님도 이와 비슷한 예화를 들려주셨습니다. “천국은 마치 밭에 감추인 보화와 같으니 사람이 이를 발견한 후 숨겨 두고 기뻐하며 돌아가서 자기의 소유를 다 팔아 그 밭을 사느니라” (마태복음 13:44). 이 사람은 그가 발견한 보화의 가치를 알기 때문에 자신의 소유를 모두 팔아 그 밭을 사려고 했습니다.

이 비유와 관련해 생각해보면, 세상의 어떤 재물이나 소유로도 우리의 죄 값을 치를 수는 없습니다. 오직 예수님의 대신 죽으심과 부활하심만이 우리를 구원하고 하나님 아버지와 화목하게 하는 그 엄청난 값을 치를 수 있습니다.

세상의 보화들도 좋지만, 그것들은 잃어버리고 빼앗기고 망가질 수 있습 니다. 우리는 예수님께서 우리를 위해 치르신 지고한 희생과 값없이 주신 영생 이라는 선물을 감사함으로 받을 수 있으며, 그분과 함께 천국에서 사는 것이 우리의 가장 큰 상급임을 압니다.

TRUE TREASURE

James threw a long rope with a powerful magnet tied to it into the waters of a New York lake. The “magnet fisher” was stunned when he pulled out a grimy safe filled with stacks of muddy one-hundred-dollar bills. Police said James could keep the money since it wasn’t linked to a crime. Some of the bills were in such poor condition they couldn’t be authenticated, though he hoped to salvage as much of the money as possible to perhaps buy a home.

Finding hidden treasure is exciting, and Jesus told a parable about a man who did just that: “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field” (MATTHEW 13:44). The man recognized the value of the treasure he’d found and was willing to sell all his possessions to purchase the field.

As we consider that parable, no amount of wealth or possessions could pay the debt we owe for our sins. Only Jesus could pay the incredible price to redeem us and to reconcile us with His Father, through His sacrificial death and resurrection.

Earthly treasures may be nice, but they can be lost, stolen, or destroyed. We can gratefully accept Jesus’ supreme sacrifice for us and His free gift of eternal life, knowing that living in heaven with Him is our great reward.

고요함 가운데

어린 시절 한밤중에 잠에서 깨면 거실 의자에 앉아 있는 엄마를 종종 발견 할 수 있었습니다. 탁자 스탠드 불빛이 엄마의 무릎 위에 놓인 성경책을 비추고 있었습니다. 불면증과 만성통증으로 잠을 잘 이루지 못한 엄마는 그 시간을 지혜롭게 사용했습니다. 그 밤에 우리가 대화를 나누는 일은 거의 없었습니다. 나는 너무 졸려서 아무 말 없이 고개만 끄덕이고 발을 끌며 복도를 지나 방으로 갔습니다. 하지만 나는 엄마가 그 고요한 새벽 시간에 하나님과 깊이 교제하셨고 하나님께서 엄마에게 말씀하셨다는 것을 알고 있습니다.

우리는 어떻게 하나님을 더 깊이 알아가는 시간을 가질 수 있을까요? 물론 잠 못 이루는 밤이 찾아올 때까지 기다리지 않아도 됩니다. 예수님께서는 제자들과 떨어져 홀로 하나님 아버지와 대화를 나누셨습니다(마가복음 1:35).

성경은 “너희는 가만히 있어 내가 하나님 됨을 알지어다”(시편 46:10) 라고 말합니다. 그리고 다윗의 시편은 그가 하나님이 어떤 분이신지 찬양하기 위해 어떻게 하나님과의 친밀한 관계를 간절히 구했는지를 보여주곤 합니다 (시편 63:1-8).

세상은 소란스럽고 우리는 그 소음에 정신을 빼앗기곤 합니다. 세상은 우리의 관심을 요구하고 세상일에 동참하라고 강요합니다. 그래서 우리는 분주한 가정생활이나 바쁜 업무 속에서 좀처럼 갖기 힘든 조용한 시간을 적극적으로 찾아 나서야 하는 것입니다. 그 고요함 속에서 우리는 하나님을 발견합니다.

하나님은 깨어계십니다. 우리의 기도를 듣고 계십니다. 그리고 그분을 찾는 이들과 시간을 함께 보내실 준비가 되어있으십니다.

IN THE STILLNESS

When I was a kid and got up in the middle of the night, I often found Mom sitting in her chair in the living room. The glow of the table lamp revealed a book on her lap— her Bible. My mom had trouble sleeping because of her insomnia and chronic pain, but she made good use of her time. We rarely spoke those nights. I was too sleepy to do anything but nod and shuffle down the hall. But I know Mom connected with God in those quiet early morning hours, and God spoke to her.

How can we find moments to know God more fully? We don’t have to wait for a sleepless night, of course. Jesus left His companions to spend time talking alone with His Father (MARK 1:35).

The Scriptures say, “Be still, and know that I am God” (PSALM 46:10). And David’s poetry often reveals how he sought out an intimate relationship with God to praise Him for who He is (63:1-8).

The world is loud, and we’re often distracted by the noise. It claims our attention and demands our participation. That’s why we need to actively seek out the quiet moments rarely found in the chaos of family life or the busyness of work. We find God in the stillness.

He’s awake. He’s listening. And He’s always ready to spend time with those who seek Him.

긍휼히 여기는 이해심

나의 장인어른은 제2차 세계대전 당시 유럽 상공을 비행하던 폭격기의 기관총 사수였습니다. 그의 비행기가 격추되면서 포로로 잡혔고 그는 몇 달 동안 전쟁 포로 수용소에서 지냈습니다. 그는 그때의 경험에 대해 거의 입밖에 내지 않았지만, 전쟁 전에 그를 알았던 사람들은 그가 환한 미소를 짓는 낙천적인 젊은이였다고 말합니다. 그러던 그가 전쟁을 겪으면서 우울하고 내성적인 사람으로 바뀌었습니다.

나는 장인어른이 겪은 일을 조금이나마 이해해보고자 유럽 상공의 공중 전에 대해 도널드 밀러가 쓴 ‘공중의 전사들’을 읽어보았습니다. 그 책은 공중전에 참여했던 병사들이 겪었던 육체적, 정신적 고통을 이해하는 데 큰 도움이 되었습니다. 그 책을 읽고 난 후 장인어른을 향한 나의 연민의 마음이 더욱 깊어졌습니다.

히브리서는 “위대한 대제사장”(4:14)이신 예수님에 대해 기록하고 있습니다. 예수님은 단지 우리의 고통을 이해하는 데 그치지 않고, 우리와 함께 사시면서 모든 상황 속에서 우리가 느끼는 감정을 직접 아셨습니다. 히브리서는 이렇게 말합니다. “우리의 연약함을 동정하지 못하실 이가 아니요 모든 일에 우리와 똑같이 시험을 받으신 이로되 죄는 없으시니라”(15절). 한번 생각해 보십시오! 예수님은 우리가 무엇을 견뎌내고 있는지 아십니다. 그분도 우리와 똑같이 시험을 받으셨습니다.

예수님의 긍휼히 여기는 마음을 배우는 것은 예수님을 필요로 하는 이들 에게 그분의 사랑을 전하는 훌륭한 방법입니다. 하나님께서 성령을 통하여 우리에게 사랑과 자비로 이웃에게 다가가는 이해의 마음을 허락해주시기를 소망합니다.

COMPASSIONATE UNDERSTANDING

My father-in-law was a gunner in a bomber over Europe during World War II. His plane was shot down and he was captured, spending several months as a prisoner of war. Jim rarely spoke of the experience, but those who knew him before the war said that he’d been a happy-go-lucky young man with a beaming smile. His war experiences turned him into a moody, withdrawn person.

Trying to understand his experience, I read Masters of the Air, Donald Miller’s description of the air war over Europe. Miller helped me grasp the physical and psychological price paid by these airmen. His book increased my compassion for my father-in-law.

The writer of Hebrews wrote of our “great high priest” (4:14)— Jesus Himself—who did much more than merely gain understanding of our struggles. He lived among us, learning how we feel in every situation. Hebrews tells us, “We do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin” (V. 15). Think of it! Jesus knows what we endure. He’s been tempted just as we are.

Learning to have a heart of compassion like Jesus is a great way to show His love to those who need Him. May God give us, by His Holy Spirit, an understanding heart that reaches out to others in love and mercy.
