하나님의 과감한 사랑

다니엘은 루마니아의 한 고아원에서 태어났습니다. 7년 동안 이 아이는 화장실에 갈 때만 침대에서 일어났습니다. 그는 여덟 살이 되었을 때, 다른 나라에서 온 어느 가족에게 입양되었습니다. 그들은 애착장애에 대해 잘 알고 있었습니다. 다니엘은 그런 증세 때문에 양부모에게 애착을 갖는 데 어려움을 겪을 수 있었습니다. 다니엘은 그들을 신뢰하기 시작했습니다. 시간이 지나면서 다니엘의 감정폭발이 자주 생기면서 양부모는 자신들을 보호하기 위해 경호원을 고용해야 할 정도였습니다. 결국 양부모는 논란의 여지가 있는 치료 요법을 시도하기로 결정했습니다. 5년 동안 아무리 다니엘이 통제불능 상태가 되더라도 절대로 그의 곁을 떠나지 않고 함께 했습니다. 다니엘은 결국 열세 번째 생일날 무너졌고 처음으로 그 양부모를 정말 사랑한다고 말했습니다. 다니엘의 양어머니는 그 엄청난 경험을 이렇게 요약했습니다. “사랑을 만드는 것은 부드럽고 감상적인 사람들을 위한 것이 아닙니다. 사랑은 전쟁터입니다.”

GOD’S DRASTIC LOVE

Daniel was born into a Romanian orphanage. For seven years, he only left his crib to go to the bathroom. When he turned eight, a family from another country adopted him. They knew about attachment disorders—that Daniel could have difficulty attaching to them as his parents. Slowly, Daniel started to trust them. Over time, though, he began to rage to the point his parents hired a bodyguard to protect them from Daniel’s outbursts. They decided on a controversial therapy: for the next five years they were never away from Daniel even if he had a meltdown. On his thirteenth birthday Daniel broke down and, for the first time, told his parents he loved them very much. His mother summarized the experience: “Creating love is not for the soft and sentimental. Love is a battlefield.”

We’re all born knowing that something or someone is missing. Like Daniel, we have an attachment disorder. But God “so loved the world” so much that he took drastic action—“he gave his one and only Son” (JOHN 3:16), meeting us on earth’s battlefield in what we call the incarnation. “Light has come into the world” (V. 19).

God took drastic measures to demonstrate His great love for the world. For you. His strong, determined Father-heart beats to hear from us the words Daniel’s parents finally heard: “I love you very much.”

피터는 매일 밤, 액자 속에 담긴 노부모의 사진에 입을 맞춥니다. 그가 부모님을 마지막으로 본 지는 이미 오래되었습니다. 젊은 시절 예수님을 믿게 되었을 때, 그는 가족과 공동체로부터 신앙을 포기하라는 심한 압박을 받았습니다. 그가 따르지 않자, 부모는 결국 피터와 부모자식의 연을 끊었습니다. “성경에서 하나님은 어려운 때에 그 분의 자녀를 도와 주시겠다고 약속하셨어요. 저는 하나님의 말씀을 믿습니다.” 피터는 말했습니다. “하나님을 따르는 일은 제게 고난을 가져왔지만, 그분은 제게 견딜 힘을 주셨습니다.”

그로부터 약 400년 후, 출애굽의 때에 “모세가 요셉의 유골을 가지고 나왔으며”(출애굽기 13:19) 그리고 마침내, “이스라엘 자손이 애굽에서 가지고 나온 요셉의 뼈를 세겜에 장사하니라”(여호수아 24:32).

우리도 요셉이 보여준 믿음의 본을 따라(히브리서 11:22), 하나님의 약속을 믿고 행함으로 우리의 믿음의 삶을 보여드립시다.

ACTING ON GOD’S PROMISES

Pieter kisses a framed picture of his elderly parents every night. It’s been many years since he was last with them. As a young adult, when he became a follower of Jesus, his family and community pressured him to give up his newfound belief. When he didn’t, his parents disowned him. “In the Bible, God promised He’d help His children in difficult times, and I believed Him,” Pieter said. “Choosing to follow Him brought suffering, but He has helped me endure.”

Pieter has the assurance from God that He keeps His word, so Pieter is able to trustingly act on God’s promises. We read in Genesis that Joseph, at the end of his life, was also confident in the promises of God. He told his brothers, “I am about to die. But God will surely come to your aid and take you up out of this land to the land he promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob” (GENESIS 50:24). Joseph was sure that God would keep His promise to take His people to Canaan. So he instructed the Israelites, “You must carry my bones up from [Egypt]” (V. 25).

Four hundred years later, during the exodus from Egypt, “Moses took the bones of Joseph with him” (EXODUS 13:19). Eventually, “Joseph’s bones, which the Israelites had brought up from Egypt, were buried at Shechem [in Canaan]” (JOSHUA 24:32).

Let’s follow Joseph’s example of faith (HEBREWS 11:22), showing our faith in God’s promises by acting on them.

하나님께서 사슬을 끊어 주심

불가리아의 응급구조 요원인 얀 페트코프는 손과 발이 묶인 채 수영을 해서 세계 기록을 세웠습니다. 그는 3,380미터를 헤엄쳤는데, 더 어려운 도전을 위해 몸 전체를 자루로 싸매기까지 했습니다.

이처럼 “꽁꽁 묶인” 상태에서도 계속 나아갈 수 있는 인내와 힘이 놀라울 따름입니다. 초대교회 시절, 바울 사도도 하나님을 섬기며 겪게 되는 장애물들 앞에서 강인한 인내심을 보여 주었습니다. 피로하고, 굶주리고, 잠 못 이루고, 매질까지 당하면서도, 그는 여전히 복음을 전하고 믿음의 동역자들에게 격려와 교훈의 편지들을 썼습니다.

바울이 디모데에게 마지막으로 쓴 편지는 로마의 감옥에서 형 집행을 기다리며 고립된 상태에서 기록한 것이었습니다. 비록 몸은 쇠사슬에 묶여 있었지만, 복음은 결코 “매이지 않는다”(디모데후서 2:9)고 그는 썼습니다. 바울은 “그러므로 내가 모든 것을 참음은” 많은 사람들이 예수 그리스도의 진리를 듣고 받아들이게 하기 위함이라고 말했습니다(10절).

UNCHAINED BY GOD

Bulgarian lifeguard Yane Petkov won a world record for swimming with his hands and feet tied together. He swam 3,380 meters through the water but added something to intensify the challenge—he wrapped his body in a sack.

The patience and strength required to keep moving despite being so “tied up” amazes me. The apostle Paul also displayed rugged resistance to obstacles as he served God in the days of the early church. Despite facing fatigue, hunger, sleeplessness, and beatings, Paul continued to preach and write letters of encouragement and instruction to his fellow believers.

Paul penned his last letter to Timothy when he was isolated in a Roman prison, awaiting execution. Although shackles restricted his body, he noted that the good news could not be “chained” (2 TIMOTHY 2:9). “Therefore,” Paul said, “I endure everything” to give others the chance to hear and accept the truth about Jesus Christ (V. 10).

God can help us endure any kind of difficulty that stands in the way of serving Him. Physical limitations such as illness, injuries, and disabilities require care and attention, but they can’t ultimately surpass God’s power, which is made perfect in our weakness (2 CORINTHIANS 12:9). Let’s give God the glory when He works through us to do things we cannot do on our own.

우리를 지키시는 하나님

보스턴에 있는 올드 노스 교회의 벽에 그려진 천사들은 높은 곳에서 아래를 내려다보며 늘 그자리에 있었지만 아무도 그 사실을 알지 못했습니다. 100년이 넘는 세월 동안 겹겹의 페인트에 덮여 있었기 때문이었습니다. 교회 기록을 보니 건축이 진행되던 1730년에 한 교인이 벽화를 그리기로 한 계약 내용이 있었습니다. 이후 2017년에 시작된 복원 프로젝트를 통해 그 천사들은 다시 모습을 드러내었습니다.

성경은 그림이 아닌 초자연적인 진짜 천사가 아무도 모르는 사이 실제로 나타났었다고 말합니다. 어느 날 선지자 엘리사는 아람 왕의 군대에 포위 당했습니다. 그의 사환은 적군을 보고 소리쳤습니다. “아아,내 주여 우리가 어찌하리이까”(열왕기하 6:15). 엘리사는 답했습니다. “두려워하지 말라 우리와 함께 한 자가 그들과 함께 한 자보다 많으니라”(16절). 엘리사는 사환의 눈이 열리기를 기도했습니다. 그러자 “사환은 불말과 불병거가 산에 가득하여 엘리사를 두른 것을 보았습니다”(17절).

천사들은 “구원의 상속자가 될 사람들을 섬기도록 보내심을 받은 영들” (히브리서 1:14, 새번역)로서, 우리를 돕기 위해 하나님이 보내신 사자들입니다. 우리 눈에 보이든 보이지 않든 그들은 우리 곁에 있습니다. 하나님은 우리가 상상할 수 있는 것보다 훨씬 많은 방법으로 우리를 지켜 주시기 때문입니다. 그렇기에 우리도 천사들처럼 하나님을 찬양할 수밖에 없습니다.

GOD WATCHING OVER US

The angels were there all along, but no one alive had seen them. They adorned the walls of the Old North Church in Boston, looking down from on high, but they’d been covered with layers of paint more than a century ago. Church records indicated a contract with a member of the congregation to paint them in 1730 when the church was undergoing construction. A recent restoration project that commenced in 2017 led to the discovery of the angels.

Scripture speaks of supernatural beings—real, not painted— that were present when others were not aware. On one occasion, the prophet Elisha was surrounded by the army of the king of Aram. When his servant saw the hostile forces, he cried out, “Oh no, my lord! What shall we do?” (2 KINGS 6:15). “ ‘Don’t be afraid,’ the prophet answered. ‘Those who are with us are more than those who are with them’ ” (V. 16). Elisha prayed for his servant’s eyes to be opened, and “he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha” (V. 17).

Angels are “ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation” (HEBREWS 1:14), messengers of God sent to help us. We may or may not see them, but they’re there because God has more ways of watching over us than we can imagine. And that should cause us to praise Him, like the angels do.

영적 은사 나누기

“기타를 정말 잘 치는구나.” 나는 교회에서 처음 만난 친구에게 말을 걸었습니다. 친구는 “고마워, 내 사역이야.”라고 대답했습니다. 바로 그 단어, ‘사역’. 나는 그 단어가 정확히 무슨 뜻인지, 혹은 그 사역이라는 것은 어떻게 “받게 되는” 것인지 몰랐습니다. 그 친구는 그저 자신에게 주어진 음악적 재능으로 다른 이들을 섬기고 있었던 것입니다. 훗날 내가 받은 은사 중 하나가 권면, 혹은 격려라는 것을 알게 되었을 때 약간 실망이 되었습니다. 너무 평범해 보였기 때문이었습니다. 하지만 나는 소그룹 에서 돌봄 리더로서 팀원들에게 격려 메일이나 전화 통화를 나누는 것을 나 자신이 즐긴다는 사실을 곧 깨달았습니다. 나도 모르는 사이에 이미 내가 가진 영적 은사를 사용하고 있었던 것입니다.

예수님을 믿는 성도라면 누구나 교회에서 섬기는 일에 쓰이도록 받은 영적 은사를 가지고 있습니다(고린도전서 12:6). 때로는 은사가 무엇인지 모를 수도 있지만, 그럴 때는 필요한 곳에서 섬기면 됩니다. 나머지는 성령님께서 하실 것입니다(4-6, 8-11절).

우리 몸이 각각 다른 기능을 하는 많은 부분으로 이루어진 것처럼, “많은 사람도 그리스도 안에서 한 몸이 되어 서로 지체가 되었습니다. 우리에게 주신 은혜대로 받은 은사가 각각 다른 것입니다”(로마서 12:5-6). 로마서 본문(6-8절)에 언급된 영적 은사에는 가르침, 격려, 나눔, 긍휼 등이 있습니다. 성령님께서 우리에게 맡기신 은사가 무엇이든 그것을 통해 그리스도의 몸인 교회를 섬기는 데 사용하도록 합시다(고린도전서 12:27).

SHARING OUR SPIRITUAL GIFTS

“You’re good at playing the guitar,” I said to a new friend at church. “Thanks,” he said. “That’s my ministry.” There was that word again. Ministry. I didn’t know what that was or how someone “got” a ministry. But my friend was simply using the musical ability he’d been given to serve others. When I later discovered that one of my gifts was exhortation, or encouragement, I was a bit disappointed. It felt too plain. But soon I realized that as the care leader of our small group, I delighted in writing encouraging notes or calling our members. I’d been using one of my spiritual gifts without even knowing it.

As believers in Jesus, we’re each given spiritual gifts to serve in the church (1 CORINTHIANS 12:6). Sometimes we don’t know what they are, so we simply serve where there’s need. The Holy Spirit will do the rest (VV. 4-6, 8-11).

Just as our human body has many parts with different functions, in Christ, “we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us” (ROMANS 12:5-6). Teaching, encouraging, giving, and showing mercy are just some of the spiritual gifts mentioned in the passage from the book of Romans (VV. 6-8). Whatever spiritual gifts the Holy Spirit entrusts us with, let’s use them to serve others in the church—the body of Christ (1 CORINTHIANS 12:27).

성배의 의미

오랫동안 사람들은 ‘성배’, 즉 예수님께서 최후의 만찬에서 사용하셨던 성스러운 잔에 큰 관심을 가져왔습니다. 아더 왕과 원탁의 기사 이야기 에는 그 성배를 집요하게 찾아헤매는 이야기가 나옵니다. 그들은 성배에 마법의 능력이 있다고 믿었습니다. 인디애나 존스 영화에서는 그와 그의 아버지 헨리의 평생의 목표였던 성배를 찾는 장면이 그려집니다.

이런 이야기는 흥미진진하지만 진실은 의외로 간단합니다. 그 잔 자체에는 어떤 특별한 힘이 없습니다. 진정한 능력은 그 잔이 상징하는 것에 있습니다. 마태복음은 예수님께서 십자가에 달리시기 전날 밤에 다락방에서 있었던 일을 이렇게 기록합니다. “또 잔을 가지사 감사 기도하시고 그들에게 주시며 이르시되 너희가 다 이것을 마시라 이것은 죄 사함을 얻게 하려고 많은 사람을 위하여 흘리는 바 나의 피 곧 언약의 피니라”(26:27-28). 그 잔은 예수님께서 우리를 대신 하여 흘리실 피를 상징합니다.

THE HOLY GRAIL

For centuries, people have been fascinated by the Holy Grail— the cup Jesus drank from at the Last Supper. The legends surrounding King Arthur and the knights of the Round Table detail their obsession over the search for the cup. They believed it had magical powers. In film, Indiana Jones and his father, Henry, fulfilled Henry’s lifelong pursuit of the Grail.

While this makes for fascinating storytelling, the truth is much more straightforward. The cup itself has no special powers. The real power is found in what it represents. Matthew describes the scene in the upper room the night before Jesus went to the cross: “Then [Jesus] took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, ‘Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins’ ” (26:27-28). The cup is a picture of the blood that Jesus would shed on our behalf.

John the Baptist introduced Jesus as “the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (JOHN 1:29). Hebrews 9:22 tells us, “Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.” And Paul wrote that Christ himself is “our Passover lamb” (1 CORINTHIANS 5:7). Jesus paid the penalty for our sins. How thankful we are for the shed blood of our Savior, the Lamb!

어릴 적 나는 모든 과목에서 S, 즉 Satisfactory(충족한)를 받은 성적표를 받아왔습니다. 나보다 다섯 살 많은 언니의 성적표에는 A와 B가 섞여 있었습니다. 나는 내 성적이 전부 A를 받은 것과 다름없다고 여겼기에, 성적표가 내가 언니보다 더 똑똑하다는 것을 증명해 준다고 생각했습니다. 그때 오빠는 우리에게 한가지 테스트를 제안했습니다. 오빠는 부모님 책장에서 책 한 권을 꺼내 한 단락을 읽어보라고 했습니다. 나는 겨우 몇 단어만 알아볼 수 있어 더듬거렸지만 언니는 완벽하게 읽었습니다. 오빠는 언니가 더 똑똑하다고 판정했습니다.

그때 나는 깨달았습니다. 오빠의 테스트가 현명했던 것입니다.

이스라엘 백성도 솔로몬 왕을 통해 지혜를 배웠습니다. 두 여인이 아이를 낳았는데, 한 아이는 엄마가 실수로 “아이 위에 눕는 바람에”(열왕기상 3:19) 죽었습니다. 돌연 그 엄마는 살아 있는 아이가 자기 아이라고 주장했습니다. 두 여인은 솔로몬에게 가서 누가 아이의 엄마인지 판결해 달라고 요청합니다. 이야기를 들은 솔로몬은 살아 있는 아이를 둘로 갈라 두 여인에게 절반씩 나눠주라고 명령했습니다(25절).

진짜 엄마가 아닌 여인은 판결에 동의했지만, 진짜 엄마는 외쳤습니다. “아이를 저 여인에게 주세요! 죽이지 마세요!”(26절). 아이를 살리려는 그 여인의 마음을 본 솔로몬은 그 여인을 진짜 엄마라고 판결하고 아이를 돌려주라고 했습니다(27절). 하나님으로부터 온 솔로몬의 지혜가 빛을 발하는 순간이었습니다.

하나님의 도우심으로 우리도 다른 이들에게 하나님의 지혜를 나타내 보일 수 있습니다(잠언 2:6).

THE WAY WISDOM WORKS

As a child, I brought home a report card with all S’s, which stood for Satisfactory. My sister, who was five years older than me, had a mixture of A’s and B’s. I thought our report cards proved I was smarter because I had what I thought was the equivalent of all A’s. My older brother then proceeded to offer us a test. He went to my parents’ bookshelf and pulled out a book. He asked me to read a passage. I stumbled, only recognizing a few words. My sister read the passage flawlessly. My brother declared her the smartest.

Lesson learned. His test proved to be wise.

The people in Israel learned a lesson on wisdom from King Solomon. Two women had delivered babies. One baby died when his mother accidentally “lay on him” (1 KINGS 3:19). This mother then tried to claim the living baby as her own. The women went to Solomon to ask who should keep the baby. When he heard the complaint, he ordered that the living baby be cut in two so both women could have a half of the child (V. 25).

The woman who was not the mother agreed to this order, but the true mother said, “Give her the living baby! Don’t kill him!” (V. 26). When she spoke up to save the child, Solomon ruled that she was the mother and said to give her the baby (V. 27). Solomon’s God-given wisdom was on full display.

As God helps us, our actions can show others the true wisdom that comes from Him too (PROVERBS 2:6).

하나님의 임재 안에서 누리는 삶

동물학자들은 바다거북이가 먹이 앞에서 보이는 재미있는 행동을 “거북이 춤”이라고 부릅니다. 거북이는 물 속에서 몸을 세우고 입을 벌린 채 앞발을 마주치며 빙글빙글 돕니다. 하지만 연구 결과, 전파 간섭이 거북이의 “위치 파악 능력”을 방해한다는 것이 밝혀졌습니다. 길을 잃게 만들고, 먹이를 찾는 데 혼란을 주고, 결국 슬프게도 거북이 춤을 멈추게 한다는 것입니다.

성경에는 다윗이 춤을 추었던 일이 나옵니다. 언약궤는 하나님의 임재를 상징했습니다. 다윗은 언약궤가 예루살렘으로 들어올 때 “여호와 앞에서 힘을 다하여 춤을 추었습니다”(사무엘하 6:14). 그러나 세월이 흐르자 다윗은 방심 했습니다. 밧세바와 죄를 짓고, 그의 남편을 전쟁터로 보내 죽게 만들었습니다(11:4, 14-15절). 밧세바와의 사이에서 태어난 아이는 병들어 죽어 갔고, 다윗은 뉘우침과 비통함으로 “금식하고 안에 들어가서 밤새도록 땅에 엎드렸습니다” (12:16).

우리도 다윗처럼 하나님의 임재 안에서는 왕성한 삶을 누리지만, 죄는 우리를 하나님과 분리시키고 “춤을 출 수 없게” 만듭니다. 어떻게 기쁨을 되찾을 수 있을까요? 하나님과의 연결을 방해하는 죄에서 돌이키면 됩니다. 회개할 때 우리는 하나님 안에서 소망을 찾습니다. 다윗은 하나님의 자비에 대해 이렇게 기록했습니다. “주께서 나의 슬픔이 변하여 내게 춤이 되게 하시며 나의 베옷을 벗기고 기쁨으로 띠 띠우셨나이다”(시편 30:11). 결국 하나님은 우리가 추는 춤의 진정한 주인이십니다.

THRIVING IN GOD’S PRESENCE

Zoologists describe what they call “turtle dancing”—the charming behavior of loggerhead turtles when they are in the presence of food. The turtles tilt their bodies vertically, open their mouths, clap their front flippers, and spin around in the water. But research has shown that radio-wave interference can disrupt the turtle’s internal “GPS.” It confuses their navigation, distracts them from their food source, and, sadly, stops their dancing.

The Bible tells of a time when David danced. The ark of the covenant conveyed the very presence of God. At a certain time, the ark was brought to Jerusalem and “David was dancing before the Lord with all his might” (2 SAMUEL 6:14). But years later, the king became distracted. He sinned with Bathsheba, sending her husband to death in war (11:4, 14-15). Now the child he’d borne with her was dying. In remorse and anguish, David “fasted and spent the nights lying in sackcloth on the ground” (12:16).

Like David, we thrive in the presence of God, but our sin distracts us from Him, and we stop “dancing.” How can we find our joy again? By turning from the sin that confuses our connection to God. When we repent, we find hope in Him. David himself writes of God’s mercy: “You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy” (PSALM 30:11). God, after all, is the true Lord of the dance.

아낌없는 사랑

손자의 열한 번째 생일을 맞아 가족들이 지중해식 요리를 하는 식당에 모였습니다. 음식을 주문하기 전에 아들은 손자에게 무엇이 먹고 싶은 지 물었습니다. 손자는 머뭇거리다 마지못해 연어 요리라고 말했는데, 그것이 매우 비싸다는 것을 알고 있었습니다. 그러자 아들은 이렇게 말했습니다. “네 생일이잖아. 먹고 싶은 거 먹어도 돼.” 손자는 너무 좋아서 함박웃음을 지었습니다.

아들의 손자를 향한 사랑을 보며 하나님의 아낌없는 사랑을 조금이나마 떠올릴 수 있었습니다. 요한1서 3장은 하나님께서 우리들에게 쏟아 부으신 “위대한 사랑”에 대해 이렇게 기록합니다. 하나님은 우리 믿는 자들을 그 분의 자녀라고 부르시며 아낌없는 사랑을 베풀었습니다(1절). 그 사랑은 우리 모두에게 주는 그리스도의 희생이라는 가장 큰 선물로 나타났습니다. 예수님은 십자가에서 “우리를 위하여 목숨을 버리셨고”(16절), 우리는 “그리스도를 믿는 믿음으로 말미암아 은혜로” 구원받았습니다(에베소서 2:8). 이것이 하나님께서 모든 믿는 자들에게 주신 은혜의 선물입니다.

LAVISH LOVE

It was my grandson’s eleventh birthday, and a group of family members gathered at a Mediterranean restaurant to celebrate. Before ordering, my son asked the birthday boy what he wanted. He reluctantly told his dad he’d like the salmon but knew it was too expensive. My son told him, “It’s your birthday. If that’s what you’d like, you can have it.” My grandson was thrilled, and his broad smile showed it.

My son’s love for his son reminds me in small part of God’s lavish love. First John 3 describes the “great love” God showers on us: He calls all who believe in Him His children (V. 1), the benefactors of His lavish love. This love is exemplified in Christ’s sacrifice, the greatest gift of all. Jesus “laid down his life for us” on the cross (V. 16). “We’re saved ‘by grace through faith’ in Christ” (EPHESIANS 2:8). This is God’s gracious gift to everyone who believes.

In response to God’s lavish love, let’s “lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters” (1 JOHN 3:16). We’re called to put our faith into action: to love and obey Him and to spread that love to others. Through the Holy Spirit, God enables us to extend lavish love to our family and beyond.

목자의 마음

“우리 울타리에 아기 사슴이 갇혔어!” 헤더가 남편 팀에게 전화를 걸었습니다. 그는 조심스럽게 그 사슴을 풀어주었지만, 어미는 어디에도 보이지 않았습니다.

그 날 오후, 팀은 숲속에서 사슴 떼가 나와 주변 풀밭의 풀을 뜯는 모습을 보았습니다. 유독 한 암사슴이 주위를 경계하며 살피는 듯했습니다. 팀은 혹시 그 암사슴이 길 잃은 새끼 사슴의 어미가 아닌가 싶어 전화기로 녹음해 두었던 새끼 사슴의 울음소리를 크게 틀었습니다. 그러자 암사슴은 그를 따르기 시작했고, 팀은 새끼 사슴을 풀어준 곳까지 어미를 안내했습니다. 새끼 사슴은 즉시 어미의 젖을 먹기 시작했고, 결국 어미와 새끼는 다시 만나 자유를 되찾았습니다. 모두 팀의 친절한 목자 역할 덕분이었습니다.

하나님께서는 팀이 한 것보다 더욱 세심하게 우리를 돌보시고 자유를 누리게 해 주십니다. 이스라엘 백성은 죄에 빠져서 결국 바벨론에서 포로 생활을 하고 있었습니다. 하지만 하나님께서는 “내가 내 양을 찾고 찾겠다”(에스겔 34:11)고 약속하셨습니다. 이스라엘의 지도자들은 백성을 “흩어지게”(12절) 내버려두었지만, 하나님께서는 “잃어버린 자를 찾고 쫓기는 자를 돌아오게 하겠다”(16절)고 말씀하신 것입니다.

예수님을 믿는 성도는 우리를 찾고 구원하시려는 하나님의 궁극적인 돌보심을 압니다. 예수님은 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “선한 목자는 양들을 위하여 목숨을 버리거니와”(요한복음 10:11). 우리가 죄로 인해 길을 잃고 그 속에 사로잡혀 있을 때 예수님께서는 엄청난 대가를 지불하시면서 우리를 구원하기로 작정하셨습니다. 자유는 바로 지금 그리고 언제나 소중한 것입니다. 우리를 자유케 하신 그 선한 목자를 찬양하며 기뻐합시다!

A SHEPHERD’S HEART

“A baby deer is caught in our fence!” Heather called to her husband, Tim. He gently set it free, but its mother was nowhere to be seen.

That afternoon Tim saw a herd of deer emerge from the woods and graze nearby. One doe seemed especially alert. Wondering if she was the fawn’s mother, Tim looked up a recording of a fawn’s distress cry on his mobile phone and played it loudly over the speaker. The doe began to follow him, and he led her to where the fawn was nestled away. The fawn immediately began to nurse; freedom had been obtained, mother and baby were reunited—all thanks to Tim’s gentle shepherding.

God is even more intentional in caring for His people and providing the freedom we need. The people of Israel had stumbled in their sin and were trapped in exile in Babylon. Yet God promised, “I myself will search for my sheep and look after them” (EZEKIEL 34:11). Because Israel’s leaders had allowed them to be “scattered” (V. 12), God said, “I will search for the lost and bring back the strays” (V. 16).

Believers in Jesus see God’s ultimate care in His search and rescue mission for us. “The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep,” Jesus said (JOHN 10:11). When we were lost in our sins and captive to them, He chose to rescue us at great cost. On this day and all days, freedom is precious. Let’s celebrate the Good Shepherd who has set us free!
