잡초에 물주기

올봄에 잡초들이 마치 영화 ‘쥐라기 공원’의 한 장면같이 우리 집 뒤뜰을 뒤덮었습니다. 한 잡초는 너무 커져서 그것을 뽑으려다 내가 다칠 것 같아 걱정이 될 정도였습니다. 내려치려고 삽을 찾다가 딸이 그 잡초에 실제로 물을 주고 있는 것을 보았습니다. “왜 그 잡초에 물을 주는 거야?”라고 소리치자, 딸은 “얼마나 자라는지 보고 싶어서요!”라고 장난스럽게 웃으며 대답했습니다.

우리는 ‘일부러’ 잡초를 키우지 않습니다. 하지만 생각해 보니 우리는 때로 영적인 삶의 “잡초”에 물을 주어 우리의 성장을 가로막는 욕망들을 키운다는 것을 깨닫게 되었습니다.

바울은 육신으로 사는 것과 성령으로 사는 것을 비교한 갈라디아서 5:13-26에서 이것에 대해 말하고 있습니다. 그는 율법을 따라 살려고 노력하는 것만으로는 우리가 원하는 “잡초 없는” 삶을 살 수 없다고 말합니다. 그 대신에 잡초에 물을 주지 않으려면 “성령을 따라 행하라”고 권면합니다. 그는 또 하나님과 꾸준히 동행하는 것이 “육체의 욕심을 이루려는”(16절) 충동에서 우리를 자유롭게 해 준다고 말합니다.

바울의 가르침을 완전히 이해하는 것은 평생이 걸리는 작업입니다. 그러나 나는 그가 제시해 준 다음과 같은 간단한 지침을 좋아합니다. ‘자신의 이기적인 욕망을 키워 원치 않는 것들이 자라게 하지 말고, 대신 하나님과의 관계를 가꿔 나가십시오. 그러면 우리가 열매를 맺고 경건한 삶을 수확하게 될 것입니다’(22-25절).

WATERING THE WEEDS

This spring, weeds attacked our backyard like something out of Jurassic Park. One got so big that when I tried to pull it out, I feared I might injure myself. Before I could find a spade to whack it down, I noticed that my daughter was actually pouring water on it. “Why are you watering the weeds?!” I exclaimed. “I want to see how big it will get!” she replied with an impish grin.

Weeds aren’t something we intentionally nourish. But as I thought about it, I realized that sometimes we do water the “weeds” in our spiritual lives, feeding desires that strangle our growth.

Paul writes about this in Galatians 5:13–26, where he contrasts living by the flesh with living by the Spirit. He says trying to follow the rules alone won’t establish the kind of “weed-free” life we long for. Instead, to avoid watering the weeds, he instructs us to “walk by the Spirit.” He adds that being in regular step with God is what frees us from the impulse to “gratify the desires of the flesh” (V. 16).

It’s a lifelong process to fully understand Paul’s teaching. But I love the simplicity of his guidance: instead of growing something unwanted by nourishing our own self-focused desires, when we’re cultivating our relationship with God, we grow fruit and reap the harvest of a godly life (VV. 22–25).

강하고 선하심

젊은 대학 교목이 어려움을 겪고 있었습니다. 내가 하나님의 인도와 도움을 구하는 기도를 하고 있는지, 바울의 말대로 쉬지 않고 기도하는지 직설적으로 물어보자 그는 갈등하는 모습을 보이며 이렇게 고백했습니다. “저는 이제 기도의 능력이 잘 안 믿어집니다.” 그리고 괴로운 표정으로 계속 말했습니다. “그리고 하나님이 듣고 계시다는 확신이 안 섭니다. 지금 돌아가는 세상을 좀 보세요.” 이 젊은 리더는 자신의 힘에 의지하여 사역을 일으켜보려 하다가 안타깝게 실패를 하고 있었습니다. 왜 그럴까요? 그는 하나님을 거부하고 있었던 것입니다.

교회의 머릿돌이신 예수님도 항상 거부당하셨습니다. 사실 그의 백성들이 먼저 주님을 거부했습니다(요한복음 1:11). 오늘날에도 많은 사람들이 여전히 주님을 거부하고, 자신의 계획과 꿈과 그외 신뢰할 수 없는 기반을 터전으로 삼아 그 위에 자신의 삶과 일과 심지어 교회를 세워보려고 애를 씁니다. 그러나 우리의 선한 구주만이 우리의 힘과 구원이 되십니다(시편 118:14). 진실로 “건축자가 버린 돌이 집 모퉁이의 머릿돌이 되었습니다”(22절).

예수님은 우리 삶을 좌우하는 모퉁이마다 계셔서, 믿는 우리들이 주님을 위해 이루고자 하는 모든 일을 유일하게 제대로 짜맞추어 주시는 분입니다. 그래서 우리는 주님께 이렇게 기도합니다. “여호와여 구하옵나니 이제 구원하소서 여호와여 우리가 구하옵나니 이제 형통하게 하소서”(25절). 그 결과는 무엇일까요? “여호와의 이름으로 오는 자가 복이 있음이여”(26절) 함과 같습니다. 강하고 선하신 주님께 우리 모두 감사드릴 수 있기를 바랍니다.

STRONG AND GOOD

The young campus minister was troubled. But he looked conflicted when I dared to ask if he prays . . . for God’s direction . . . for His help. To pray, as Paul urged, without ceasing. In reply, the young man confessed, “I’m not sure I believe anymore in prayer.” He frowned. “Or believe that God is listening. Just look at the world.” That young leader was “building” a ministry in his own strength and, sadly, he was failing. Why? He was rejecting God.

Jesus, as the cornerstone of the church, has always been rejected—starting, in fact, with His own people (JOHN 1:11). Many still reject Him today, struggling to build their lives, work, even churches on lesser foundations—their own schemes, dreams, and other unreliable ground. Yet, our good Savior alone is our strength and defense (PSALM 118:14). Indeed, “the stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone” (V. 22).

Set at the vital corner of our lives, He provides the only right alignment for anything His believers seek to accomplish for Him. To Him, therefore, we pray, “Lord, save us! Lord, grant us success!” (V. 25). The result? “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord” (V. 26). May we give thanks to Him because He’s strong and good.

내려놓으라

어거스틴의 자서전 ‘고백록’은 예수님을 향한 그의 길고 험했던 여정을 그리고 있습니다. 한 번은 황제에게 아첨하는 연설을 하기 위해 말을 타고 왕궁으로 가고 있었습니다. 준비한 가식적인 칭송의 문구들을 가지고 고심하던 그는 한 술 취한 거지가 “농담을 지껄이며 웃어대는” 것을 보았습니다. 그는 자신이 이런 떳떳치 못한 일을 해서라도 얻으려 했던 덧없는 행복을 이 주정꾼은 별로 애쓰지 않고도 이미 다 가지고 있는 것을 보았습니다. 그래서 어거스틴은 세상적인 성공을 위한 노력을 내려놓았습니다.

그러나 그는 여전히 욕망의 노예였습니다. 자신이 죄에서 돌이키지 않고는 예수님께로 돌아올 수 없다는 것을 알고 있었지만 여전히 음행과 씨름하고 있었습니다. 그래서 그는 이렇게 기도했습니다. “나에게 순결을 주십시오... 하지만 지금은 아닙니다.”

어거스틴은 구원과 죄 사이에 붙들려 넘어짐을 반복하다가 결국 그 마지막 순간에 다다랐습니다. 그는 예수님을 먼저 믿은 다른 사람들에게 자극 받아 로마서 13:13-14을 폈습니다. “단정히 행하고 방탕하거나 술 취하지 말며 음란하거나 호색하지 말며... 오직 주 예수 그리스도로 옷 입고 정욕을 위하여 육신의 일을 도모하지 말라.”

LET IT GO

Augustine’s autobiographical Confessions describes his long and winding journey to Jesus. On one occasion, he was riding to the palace to give a flattering speech for the emperor. He was fretting over his deceptive applause lines when he noticed a drunken beggar “joking and laughing.” He realized the drunk already had whatever fleeting happiness his shifty career might bring, and with much less effort. So Augustine stopped striving for worldly success.

But he was still enslaved by lust. He knew he couldn’t turn to Jesus without turning from sin, and he still struggled with sexual immorality. So he prayed, “Grant me chastity . . . but not yet.”

Augustine stumbled along, torn between salvation and sin, until finally he had enough. Inspired by others who had turned to Jesus, he opened a Bible to Romans 13:13–14. “Let us behave decently . . . not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality . . . . Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.”

That did it. God used those inspired words to break Augustine’s chains of lust and brought him “into the kingdom of the Son . . . in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins” (COLOSSIANS 1:13–14). Augustine became a bishop who remained tempted by fame and lust, but he now knew whom to see when he sinned. He turned to Jesus. Have you?

너무 짧아서 쓸모없는 끈

마가렛 이모의 검소함은 모두가 다 압니다. 이모가 돌아가신 후 조카들은 슬프면서도 즐거운 마음으로 이모의 유품을 정리하기 시작했습니다. 서랍 안에서 단정하게 정리된 작은 조각의 끈들을 모아둔 작은 플라스틱 가방이 나왔습니다. 가방의 이름표에는 “짧아서 쓸 수 없는 끈들”이라고 적혀 있었습니다.

쓸모없는 물건인 줄 알면서도 따로 분류해 간직하는 사람들은 무슨 이유로 그럴까요? 어쩌면 한때 극심한 가난을 당해보았기 때문일 수도 있을 것입니다.

이스라엘 백성들은 애굽의 종살이에서 벗어날 때 고생스러운 삶을 떠났습니다. 그러나 그들은 출애굽 과정에서 역사하신 하나님의 기적의 손길을 곧 잊어버리고 먹을 양식이 없다고 불평하기 시작했습니다.

하나님은 그들이 하나님을 신뢰하기 원하셨습니다. 하나님은 광야에서 양식으로 만나를 공급하시며, 모세에게 “백성이 나가서 일용할 것을 날마다 거둘 것이라”(출애굽기 16:4)고 말씀하셨습니다. 하나님은 또한 안식일에는 만나가 내리지 않으므로 6일째에는 두 배로 거두라고 명령하셨습니다(5, 25 절). 이스라엘 백성 중에 어떤 사람들은 그 말을 들었지만, 어떤 사람들은 듣지 않아서 예상했던 대가를 치뤘습니다(27–28절).

STRING TOO SHORT TO USE

Aunt Margaret’s frugality was legendary. After she passed away, her nieces began the nostalgically bittersweet task of sorting her belongings. In a drawer, neatly arrayed inside a small plastic bag, they discovered an assortment of small pieces of string. The label read: “String too short to use.”

What would motivate someone to keep and categorize something they knew to be of no use? Perhaps this person once knew extreme deprivation.

When the Israelites fled slavery in Egypt, they left behind a life of hardship. But they soon forgot God’s miraculous hand in their exodus and started complaining about the lack of food.

God wanted them to trust Him. He provided manna for their desert diet, telling Moses, “The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day” (EXODUS 16:4). God also instructed them to gather twice as much on the sixth day, because on the Sabbath no manna would fall (VV. 5, 25). Some of the Israelites listened. Some didn’t, with predictable results (VV. 27–28).

In times of plenty and times of desperation, it’s tempting to try to cling, to hoard, in a desperate attempt at control. There’s no need to take everything into our own frantic hands. No need to “save scraps of string”—or to hoard anything at all. Our faith is in God, who has promised, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you” (HEBREWS 13:5).

예수님처럼 사랑하기

조지아주 애틀랜타의 기차역에서 양복바지에 와이셔츠를 입은 청년이 의자에 앉아서 기차를 기다리고 있었습니다. 그 청년이 넥타이를 매지 못해 힘들어하는 모습을 본 어느 할머니가 자기 남편에게 청년을 좀 도와주라고 했습니다. 할아버지가 허리를 굽혀 청년에게 넥타이 매는 법을 가르쳐주기 시작하는데 지나가던 사람이 그 세 사람의 모습을 사진에 담았습니다. 이 사진이 온라인에 퍼지자 많은 사람들이 우연하게 베푼 그 친절한 행동이 얼마나 감동적인지를 댓글로 달았습니다.

예수님을 믿는 성도들이 다른 사람들에게 친절을 베푸는 것은 예수님께서 우리와 같은 사람들에게 보여주신 자기희생적인 사랑을 반영해 보여주는 것과 . 그것은 하나님의 사랑의 표현이며, 예수님이 제자들에게 “서로 사랑하라”(요한1서 3:11)고 당부하신 대로 사는 것입니다. 요한 사도는 형제나 자매를 미워하는 것은 살인하는 것과 같다고 하면서(15절), 사랑을 행동으로 보여주신 예수님이 우리의 본이라고 했습니다(16절).

이타적인 사랑은 희생을 과시해 보이는 것이 아닙니다. 그것은 단순히 하나님의 형상을 지닌 ‘모든’ 사람들의 가치를 인정하면서 매일같이 그들의 필요를 우리의 필요보다 먼저 생각하는 것입니다. 우리가 사랑의 마음으로 관심을 갖고 남들의 필요를 돌아보며 도울 수 있는 일을 한다면 일상의 모든 순간이 다 이타적인 삶이 됩니다. 자신의 영역 너머까지 내다보면서 편안한 일상을 떨쳐버리고 다른 사람들을 섬기며 베풀 때, 더구나 베풀 의무가 없는데도 베풀 때, 우리는 예수님처럼 사랑하는 것입니다.

LOVING LIKE JESUS

While waiting for a train at a station in Atlanta, Georgia, a young man wearing dress pants and a button-down shirt sat on a bench. As he struggled with his tie, an older woman encouraged her husband to help. When the elderly man hunched over and began teaching the young man how to knot the tie, a stranger took a photo of the trio. When this photo went viral online, many viewers left comments about the power of random acts of kindness.

For believers in Jesus, kindness to others reflects the selfsacrificing care that He showed for people like us. It’s an expression of God’s love and what He desired His disciples to live out: “We should love one another” (1 JOHN 3:11 EMPHASIS ADDED). John equates hating a brother or sister to murder (V. 15). Then he turns to Christ as an example of love in action (V. 16).

Selfless love doesn’t have to be an extravagant display of sacrifice. It simply requires us to acknowledge the value of all God’s image-bearers by placing their needs above our own . . . every day. Those seemingly ordinary moments when we care enough to notice the needs of others and do what we can to help are selfless, when we’re motivated by love. When we see beyond our personal space, step out of our comfort zones to serve others and give, especially when we don’t have to give, we’re loving like Jesus.

용서의 힘

2021년 갱단에 납치된 17명의 선교사에 대한 뉴스가 보도되었습니다. 갱단은 인질의 몸값을 받지 못하면 모두 다 (아이들을 포함해서) 죽이겠다고 협박했습니다. 놀랍게도 모든 선교사들이 풀려나거나 탈출할 수 있었습니다. 그들은 안전한 곳에 도달한 후 “예수님은 용서하는 사랑의 힘이 폭력의 증오보다 더 강하다는 것을 말씀으로, 자신의 삶으로 가르쳐 주셨습니다. 그러므로 우리도 당신들을 용서합니다.”라는 메시지를 납치범들에게 보냈습니다.

예수님은 용서의 힘을 분명히 보여주셨습니다. 예수님은 “너희가 사람의 잘못을 용서하면 너희 하늘 아버지께서도 너희 잘못을 용서하시리라”(마태복음 6:14)고 말씀하셨습니다. 후에 베드로에게 대답하실 때, “일곱 번뿐 아니라 일곱 번을 일흔 번까지라도 할지니라”고 하시며 얼마나 많이 용서해야 하는지도 말씀하셨습니다(18:22; 21-35절 참조). 그리고 십자가에서 “아버지 저들을 사하여 주옵소서 자기들이 하는 것을 알지 못함이니이다”(누가복음 23:34) 라고 기도하시며 하나님의 용서를 보여주셨습니다.

양쪽 당사자가 치유와 화해를 위해 나아갈 때 완전한 용서가 이루어집니다. 용서를 한다고 받은 상처가 사라지거나, 아프고 건강치 못한 관계를 잘 다루는 방법을 알아내야 할 필요까지 사라지는 것은 아니지만, 용서를 해야 관계가 회복될 수 있고 하나님의 사랑과 능력을 보여줄 수 있습니다. 하나님의 영광을 위해 우리도 “더 널리 용서하는” 방법을 찾아보도록 합시다.

THE POWER OF FORGIVENESS

A 2021 news reports told of seventeen missionaries that had been kidnapped by a gang. The gang threatened to kill the group (including children) if their ransom demands weren’t met. Incredibly, all the missionaries were either released or escaped to freedom. On reaching safety, they sent a message to their captors: “Jesus taught us by word and by His own example that the power of forgiving love is stronger than the hate of violent force. Therefore, we extend forgiveness to you.”

Jesus made it clear that forgiveness is powerful. He said, “If you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you” (MATTHEW 6:14). Later, in answering Peter, Christ told how often we should forgive: “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times” (18:22; SEE V V. 21–35). And on the cross, He demonstrated godly forgiveness when He prayed, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing” (LUKE 23:34).

Forgiveness at its fullest can be realized when both parties move toward healing and reconciliation. And while it doesn’t remove the effects of harm done or the need to be discerning in how to address painful or unhealthy relationships, it can lead to restored ones—testifying to God’s love and power. Let’s look for ways to “extend forgiveness” for His honor.

유라시아의 그루지아에 있는 크루베라 동굴 (혹은 보로냐 동굴)은 지구상에서 가장 깊은 동굴 중의 하나로 지금도 탐사가 이루어지고 있습니다. 한 탐험대는 대부분 수직으로 내려가는 어둡고 무서운 이 동굴을 2,197미터까지 내려가 탐사를 했습니다. 땅속으로 7,208피트나 들어간 것입니다! 이와 비슷한 동굴들이 그루지아의 다른 지역과 전 세계에 약 400 개 있습니다. 더 많은 동굴들이 계속 발견되면서 동굴의 깊이에 대한 기록도 갱신되고 있습니다.

계속해서 창조의 신비를 발견할수록 우리가 살고 있는 우주에 대한 이해도 깊어지고, 우리에게 돌보라고 맡기신 이 지구에서 하나님이 행하신 그 무엇과도 비교할 수 없는 창조의 손길에 감탄하게 됩니다(창세기 1:26-28). 시편 기자는 우리에게 하나님의 위대하심을 “노래하며” “즐거이 외치라”고 권합니다 (1절). 내일 지구의 날을 맞아 하나님의 놀라운 창조 사역을 생각해 봅시다. 우리가 지금까지 발견한 것이나 아직 모르는 것까지도 지구상에 존재하는 모든 것은 우리가 주님께 엎드려 경배할 이유가 됩니다(6절).

하나님은 그분이 창조하신 광대한 물리적인 장소들만 아시는 것이 아니라, 우리의 마음속 은밀한 깊은 곳까지도 알고 계십니다. 그리고 우리는 인생을 살아가는 동안 그루지아의 동굴과 다르지 않게 어둡고 무서운 시기들을 지날 것입니다. 그러나 하나님께서 강하고도 따뜻한 보살핌으로 그러한 시간까지도 주관하시는 것을 압니다. 시편 기자의 말과 같이 우리는 그분의 백성이며, “그의 손이 돌보시는 양”(7절)입니다.

DISCOVERING CREATION

Krubera-Voronja, in the Eurasian country of Georgia, is one of the deepest caves yet explored on planet Earth. A team of explorers have probed the dark and scary depths of its mostly vertical caverns to 2,197 meters—that’s 7,208 feet into the earth! Similar caves, around four hundred of them, exist in other parts of the country and across the globe. More caverns are being discovered all the time and new depth records are being set.

The mysteries of creation continue to unfold, adding to our understanding of the universe we live in and causing us to wonder at the matchless creativity of God’s handiwork on earth that we’re called by God to care for (GENESIS 1:26–28). The psalmist invites us all to “sing for joy” and “shout aloud” to God because of His greatness (V. 1). As we celebrate Earth Day tomorrow, let’s consider God’s incredible work of creation. All that it contains— whether we’ve yet discovered it or not—is cause for us to bow down in worship to Him (V. 6).

He doesn’t just know the vast, physical places of His creation; He also knows the intimate depths of our hearts. And not unlike in the caverns of Georgia, we’ll go through dark and perhaps scary seasons in life. Yet we know that God holds even those times in His powerful yet tender care. In the words of the psalmist, we’re His people, the “flock under his care” (V. 7).

예수님 안에서 계속 나아가기

숲속을 달리면서 지름길을 찾다가 잘 모르는 길로 들어섰습니다. 길을 잃었을까 걱정이 되어 반대쪽에서 달려오는 사람에게 이 길이 맞는지 물어보았습니다.

“맞아요.” 그는 확실하게 대답했습니다. 나의 의심스러운 표정에 그는 재빨리 덧붙여 말했습니다. “걱정 마세요. 내가 잘못된 길들은 이미 다 가봤어요! 하지만 괜찮아요. 달리다 보면 다 알게 돼요.”

나의 영적 여행에 대한 참으로 적절한 묘사가 아닐 수 없습니다! 나는 얼마나 많이 하나님으로부터 멀어졌었고, 유혹에 넘어가고, 또 세상 일들에 한눈을 팔았던지요! 그러나 하나님은 내가 반드시 다시 넘어질 것을 아시면서도 매번 용서하시고 앞으로 나아갈 수 있도록 도와주셨습니다. 하나님은 우리가 잘못된 길로 들어서기 쉽다는 것을 알고 계십니다. 그러나 우리의 죄를 고백하고, 우리를 변화시키시는 성령님께 순종하는 한 하나님은 언제나 계속해서 용서해주십니다.

바울도 이 모든 것이 믿음의 여정의 한 부분임을 알고 있었습니다. 죄로 가득 찬 과거와 현재의 약점들을 잘 알고 있던 그는 자신이 원하는 그리스도 같은 온전함을 아직 이루지 못했다는 것도 알고 있었습니다(빌립보서 3:12). 그래서 그는 말합니다. “오직 한 일 즉 뒤에 있는 것은 잊어버리고 앞에 있는 것을 잡으려고... 달려 가노라”(13-14절). 실족하는 것은 우리가 하나님과 동행하는 과정의 한 부분입니다. 하나님은 우리의 실수를 통해서 우리를 새롭게 하십니다. 용서받은 자녀인 우리는 하나님의 은혜로 계속 달려갈 수 있습니다.

PRESSING ON IN JESUS

On a run in the forest, I tried to find a shortcut and went down an unfamiliar path. Wondering if I was lost, I asked a runner coming the other way if I was on the right track. “Yup,” he replied confidently. Seeing my doubtful look, he quickly added: “Don’t worry, I’ve tried all the wrong routes! But that’s okay, it’s all part of the run.”

What an apt description of my spiritual journey! How many times have I strayed from God, given in to temptation, and been distracted by the things of life? Yet God has forgiven me each time and helped me to move on—knowing I will certainly stumble again. God knows our tendency to go down the wrong path. But He’s always ready to forgive, again and again, if we confess our sins and allow His Spirit to transform us.

Paul too knew this was all part of the faith journey. Fully aware of his sinful past and current weaknesses, he knew he had yet to obtain the Christlike perfection he desired (PHILIPPIANS 3:12). “But one thing I do,” he added, “forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on” (VV. 13–14). Stumbling is part of our walk with God: it’s through our mistakes that He refines us. His grace enables us to press on, as forgiven children.

친구 대역?

전 세계적으로 많은 사람들의 삶이 점점 더 외로워지고 있습니다. 친구가 없는 미국인들의 수가 1990년 이후로 네 배가 되었습니다. 어느 유럽 국가는 인구의 약 20퍼센트 정도가 외로움을 느끼고 있는가 하면, 일본의 어떤 노인들은 감옥에서 재소자들과 친구가 되려고 일부러 범죄를 저지르기도 했습니다.

사업가들은 이런 외로움 병의 “해결책”으로 ‘친구 대역’을 내어 놓았습니다. 시간제로 고용된 이 사람들을 부르면 카페에서 만나 이야기를 나누거나 혹은 파티에 동행해줍니다. 한 “친구 대역”에게 그녀의 고객들이 누구인지를 물어보니, 그녀는 “장시간 근무로 인해 친구를 만들 시간이 없는 외로운 30-40대 전문인들”이라고 대답했습니다.

전도서 4장은 “아들도 형제도” 없이 사는 외로운 한 사람을 보여줍니다. 그의 수고는 끝이 없으나 그의 성공은 만족스럽지 않습니다(8절). 그는 자신의 처지를 깨닫고 “내가 누구를 위하여 이같이 수고하는가...?”라고 묻습니다. 그의 노고를 줄여주고 역경에 처했을 때 도움을 줄 사람과의 관계에 투자하는 것이 훨씬 낫습니다(9-12절). 왜냐하면 궁극적으로 친구 없는 성공은 “의미 없는 일”이기 때문입니다(8절).

전도서는 세 겹줄은 쉽게 끊어지지 않는다고 말합니다(12절). 하지만 그것은 또한 금방 엮어지는 것도 아닙니다. 진정한 친구는 빌려올 수 없기 때문에 시간을 들여 만들어야 합니다. 하나님을 우리의 세 번째 줄로 하여 단단한 세 겹줄을 엮어봅시다.

RENT-A-FRIEND?

For many around the world, life is getting lonelier. The number of Americans who have no friends has quadrupled since 1990. Certain European countries have up to 20 percent of their population feeling lonely, while in Japan, some elderly folks have resorted to crime so they can have the companionship of inmates in jail.

Entrepreneurs have come up with a “solution” to this loneliness epidemic—rent-a-friend. Hired by the hour, these people will meet you in a café to talk or accompany you to a party. One such “friend” was asked who her clientele was. “Lonely, 30- to 40-year-old professionals,” she said, “who work long hours and don’t have time to make many friends.”

Ecclesiastes 4 describes a person who is all alone, without “son nor brother.” There’s “no end” to this worker’s toil, yet his success isn’t fulfilling (V. 8). “For whom am I toiling . . . ?” he asks, waking up to his plight. Far better to invest in relationships, which will make his workload lighter and provide help in trouble (VV. 9–12). Because, ultimately, success without friendship is “meaningless” (V. 8).

Ecclesiastes tells us that a cord of three strands isn’t quickly broken (V. 12). But neither is it quickly woven. Since true friends can’t be rented, let’s invest the time needed to form them, with God as our third strand, weaving us tightly together.

장차 이루실 신실하심

사라는 겨우 열 네 살 되던 해에 어머니를 잃었습니다. 그녀와 동생들은 금방 집을 잃고 노숙자가 되었습니다. 수 년 후에 사라는 대대로 물려줄 수 있는 유산을 자손들에게 남기고 싶었습니다. 그래서 그녀가 가져보지 못한 안정된 가정을 가족에게 제공하기 위해 집을 사려고 열심히 일을 했습니다.

미래의 자손을 위해 집에 투자하는 것은 아직 보지 못한 미래를 향한 믿음의 행위입니다. 하나님은 예레미야 선지자에게 바벨론 군대가 예루살렘을 무력으로 포위하기 바로 전에 땅을 사라고 말씀하셨습니다(예레미야 32:6-12). 하나님의 지시는 아주 이치에 맞지 않는 것이었습니다. 조금 있으면 그들의 모든 땅과 소유물은 몰수될 것이기 때문이었습니다.

그러나 하나님은 예레미야에게 이렇게 약속하셨습니다. “내가 이 백성에게 이 큰 재앙을 내린 것 같이 허락한 모든 복을 그들에게 내리리라”(42절). 선지자를 통해 토지에 투자하게 하신 것은 신실하신 하나님이 언젠가 이스라엘 백성들을 그들의 고향으로 다시 돌려보내시겠다는 구체적인 징표였습니다. 그 험악한 공격을 당하는 중에도 하나님은 그의 백성들에게 집과 땅을 다시 사고 팔 수 있는 평화가 다시 올 것이라고 약속하셨습니다(43–44절).

오늘날 우리는 하나님의 신실하심을 믿고 우리의 믿음에 “투자”해야 합니다. 이 땅에서 모든 상황이 회복되는 것을 보지 못할지라도 우리에게는 언젠가 주님께서 모든 것을 올바르게 하실 거라는 확신이 있습니다.

FUTURE FAITHFULNESS

Sara lost her mother when she was just fourteen years old. She and her siblings lost their house soon after and became homeless. Years later, Sara wanted to provide her future children with an inheritance that could be passed down from generation to generation. She worked hard to purchase a house, giving her family the stable home she never had.

Investing in a home for future generations is an act of faith toward a future you don’t yet see. God told the prophet Jeremiah to purchase land just before the violent siege of Jerusalem by the Babylonians (JEREMIAH 32:6–12). To the prophet, God’s instructions didn’t make a lot of sense. Soon all their property and belongings would be confiscated.

But God gave Jeremiah this promise: “As I have brought all this great calamity on this people, so I will give them all the prosperity I have promised them” (V. 42). The prophet’s investment in property was a physical sign of God’s faithfulness to someday restore the Israelites to their homeland. Even in the midst of a terrible attack, God promised His people that peace would come again—homes and property would be bought and sold again (VV. 43–44).

Today we can put our trust in God’s faithfulness and choose to “invest” in faith. Although we may not see an earthly restoration of every situation, we have the assurance that He’ll someday make everything right. KAREN PIMPO
