잊지 말고 찬양하라

우리 교회 교인들은 첫 건축을 할 때 건물 내부 공사가 끝나기 전에 감사의 글을 벽기둥과 콘크리트 바닥에 적었습니다. 석고판을 기둥에서 떼어 내면 그 글들을 볼 수 있습니다. 수많은 성경 구절들 옆에 ‘좋으신 하나님!’과 같은 찬양의 기도들이 씌어 있습니다. 우리가 어떤 시험을 당해도 하나님은 인자하시고 우리를 돌보셨다는 것을 후대에 전하고자 그 글들을 거기에 적어 놓은 것입니다.

우리는 하나님이 우리를 위해 하신 일들을 기억하고 다른 이들에게도 알려야 합니다. 그래서 이사야 선지자는 “내가 여호와께서 우리에게 베푸신 모든 자비와 그의 찬송을 말하며”(이사야 63:7)라고 기록했습니다. 또한 그는 역사 속에서 하나님이 그의 백성을 향해 베푸신 긍휼과 어떻게 “그들의 환란에 동참”(9절)하셨는지를 이야기합니다. 그러나 이사야서의 그 장을 계속 읽어보면 이스라엘 민족이 다시 환란을 겪게 되고 이사야 선지자가 하나님의 개입을 갈망하는 것을 보게 됩니다.

어려운 일을 겪을 때 하나님이 과거에 베풀어 주신 자비를 기억하는 것이 도움이 됩니다. 힘든 시기는 오고 가지만 하나님의 신실하심은 결코 변하지 않습니다. 하나님이 하신 모든 일들을 기억하며 감사하는 마음으로 하나님을 의지할 때, 우리는 그분이 언제나 찬양을 받기 합당하신 분임을 새롭게 발견하게 될 것입니다.

REMEMBERING TO PRAISE

When our congregation built our first building, people wrote thankful reminders on the wall studs and concrete floors before the interior of the building was finished. Pull back the drywall from the studs and you’ll find them there. Verse after verse from Scripture, written beside prayers of praise like “You are so good!” We left them there as a witness to future generations that regardless of our challenges, God had been kind and taken care of us.

We need to remember what God has done for us and tell others about it. Isaiah exemplified this when he wrote, “I will tell of the kindnesses of the Lord, the deeds for which he is to be praised, according to all the Lord has done for us” (ISAIAH 63:7). Later, the prophet also recounts God’s compassion for His people throughout history, even telling how “in all their distress he too was distressed” (V. 9). But if you keep reading the chapter, you’ll notice Israel is again in a time of trouble, and the prophet longs for God’s intervention.

Remembering God’s past kindnesses helps when times are hard. Challenging seasons come and go, but His faithful character never changes. As we turn to Him with grateful hearts in remembrance of all He’s done, we discover afresh that He’s always worthy of our praise.

더 큰 사랑

고난 주간 바로 며칠 전, 세계 기독교인들이 예수님의 희생을 기억하고 그의 부활을 기념할 때 프랑스 남서부 지역의 한 슈퍼마켓에 테러리스트가 들이닥쳐 두 사람을 총기로 살해했습니다. 협상 끝에 테러리스트는 인간 방패로 사용할 인질 한 명을 제외한 모두를 풀어주었습니다. 상황의 심각성을 인지한 경찰관 아르노 벨트람은 뜻밖의 선택을 했습니다. 인질로 잡힌 여인을 대신하여 자신이 인질이 되겠다고 한 것입니다. 범인은 여인을 놓아주었지만 이어진 격렬한 싸움에서 경찰관은 부상을 당하고 끝내 목숨을 잃고 말았습니다.

이 경찰관을 아는 한 목사는 이 희생적인 행동 뒤에는 예수님을 믿는 믿음이 있다고 하면서 예수님께서 “사람이 친구를 위하여 자기 목숨을 버리면 이보다 더 큰 사랑이 없다”고 하신 요한복음 15장 13절 말씀을 인용했습니다. 이 말씀은 예수님이 제자들과 최후의 만찬을 드신 후 하신 말씀이었습니다. 예수님은 “내가 너희를 사랑한 것 같이 너희도 서로 사랑하라”(12절) 고 하시며 친구를 위하여 자기 목숨을 버리는 것이 가장 큰 사랑이라고 제자들에게 말씀하셨습니다(13절). 그리고 다음 날 예수님은 말씀하신 그대로 행하셨습니다. 오직 주님만이 하실 수 있는 일, 곧 우리 죄를 대속하시기 위해 십자가를 지신 것입니다.

우리 모두가 아르노 벨트람과 같은 영웅적인 희생을 해야 하는 것은 아닙니다. 그러나 하나님 사랑 안에 거하면서 우리가 자신의 뜻과 욕망을 내려놓고 하나님의 크신 사랑의 이야기를 전하려 애쓴다면, 그것은 자신을 희생하며 다른 사람들을 섬기는 것이 될 수 있습니다.

GREATER LOVE

Just days before Holy Week, when Christians around the world remember Jesus’ sacrifice and celebrate His resurrection, a terrorist stormed into a supermarket in southwest France opening fire and killing two. After negotiation, the terrorist released all but one hostage, whom he turned into a human shield. Knowing the danger, police officer Arnaud Beltrame did the unthinkable: he volunteered to take the woman’s place. The perpetrator released her, but in the ensuing scuffle Beltrame was injured and later died.

A minister who knew the police officer attributed his heroism to his faith in Jesus, pointing to His words in John 15:13: “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” Those were the words Christ spoke to His disciples after their last meal together. He told His friends to “Love each other as I have loved you” (V. 12) and that the greatest love is to lay down one’s life for another (V. 13). This is exactly what Jesus did the next day, when He went to the cross to save us from our sin—as only He could.

We may never be called to follow the heroism of Arnaud Beltrame. But as we remain in God’s love, we can serve others sacrificially, laying down our own plans and desires as we seek to share the story of His great love.

관계 회복

어릴 적 나와 언니는 자주 다투었는데 그중 한 싸움이 특별히 기억에 남습니다. 서로 상처 주는 말을 내뱉으며 옥신각신하고 있던 중 언니가 차마 용서할 수 없는 말을 했습니다. 서로를 향한 분노가 거세지는 모습을 보신 할머니가 “하나님이 너희 삶에 자매 한 명을 주셨어. 너희는 서로에게 좀 더 마음을 베풀어야 해.”라고 하시며 우리에게 서로를 사랑해야 할 책임감을 일깨워 셨습니다. 그래서 하나님께 사랑과 이해심을 갖게 해달라고 기도를 하자 하나님은 우리가 서로 상처를 준 것을 인정하고 서로 용서하게 하셨습니다.

우리는 억울한 마음이나 화난 감정을 품기 쉽지만, 하나님은 우리가 하나님께 분노의 감정을 풀어 달라고 매달릴 때에만(에베소서 4:31) 주시는 평화를 경험하기 원하십니다. 그런 감정을 계속 품지 말고 “서로 친절하게 하며 불쌍히 여기며 서로 용서하기를 하나님이 그리스도 안에서 [우리를] 용서하심과 같이”(32절) 하기를 힘쓰며, 사랑과 은혜로만 가능한 예수님의 용서의 예를 본받아야 합니다. 용서하기 힘들다고 여겨질 때, 하나님이 우리에게 매일 허락하시는 은혜를 생각해 보기를 바랍니다. 우리가 아무리 많이 실패한다 해도 하나님의 긍휼은 무궁하십니다(예레미야애가 3:22). 하나님은 우리 마음의 쓴뿌리를 없애 주시고, 그럼으로써 우리가 계속 자유롭게 하나님의 사랑을 바라고 또 받아들일 수 있게 해 주십니다.

RECONCILING RELATIONSHIPS

My sister and I clashed frequently when we were younger, but one time especially stands out in my memory. After a bout of yelling back and forth where we’d both said hurtful things, she said something that in the moment seemed unforgivable. Witnessing the animosity growing between us, my grandmother reminded us of our responsibility to love each other: “God gave you one sister in life. You’ve got to show each other a little grace,” she said. When we asked God to fill us with love and understanding, He helped us acknowledge how we’d hurt each other and to forgive one another.

It can be so easy to hold on to bitterness and anger, but God desires for us to experience the peace that can only come when we ask Him to help us release feelings of resentment (EPHESIANS 4:31). Instead of harboring these feelings, we can look to Christ’s example of forgiveness that comes from a place of love and grace, striving to be “kind and compassionate” and to “[forgive] each other, just as in Christ God forgave [us]” (V. 32). When we find it challenging to forgive, may we consider the grace that He extends to us each day. No matter how many times we fall short, His compassion never fails (LAMENTATIONS 3:22). God can help us remove bitterness from our hearts, so we’re free to remain hopeful and receptive to His love.

끝까지 오르막길

시인이자 신앙적인 글을 쓰는 크리스티나 로세티에게 쉬운 일은 하나도 없었습니다. 그녀는 평생 우울증과 여러 질병에 시달렸고 세 번의 파혼을 겪었습니다. 나중에 그녀는 암으로 사망했습니다.

다윗은 승리의 전사로 이스라엘 민족의 전격적인 총애를 받았지만 그의 일생은 고난의 연속이었습니다. 그의 통치 말년에는 아들과 신뢰하던 고문, 그리고 국민 상당수가 그에게 등을 돌렸습니다(사무엘하 15:1-12). 그래서 다윗은 제사장 아비아달과 사독과 함께 하나님의 언약궤를 메고 예루살렘을 벗어났습니다(14, 24절).

UPHILL ALL THE WAY

Christina Rossetti, a poet and devotional writer, found that nothing came easily for her. She suffered from depression and various illnesses throughout her life and endured broken engagements. Eventually she died of cancer.

When David burst into Israel’s national consciousness, it was as a triumphant warrior. Yet throughout his life, David faced hardship. Late in his reign, his own son, along with his trusted advisor and much of the country, turned against him (2 SAMUEL 15:1–12). So David took the priests Abiathar and Zadok and the sacred ark of God with him and fled Jerusalem (VV. 14, 24).

After Abiathar had offered sacrifices to God, David told the priests, “Take the ark of God back into the city. If I find favor in the Lord’s eyes, he will bring me back and let me see it and his dwelling place again” (V. 25). Despite the uncertainty, David said, “If [God] says, ‘I am not pleased with you,’ . . . let him do to me whatever seems good to him” (V. 26). He knew he could trust God.

Rossetti trusted God too, and her life ended in hope. The road may indeed wind uphill all the way, but it leads to our heavenly Father, who awaits us with open arms.

찬양의 눈물

여러 해 전 나는 요양병원에 계신 어머니를 돌보았습니다. 4개월 동안 어머니를 간병할 수 있게 하신 하나님께 감사를 드리며, 돌아가시고 슬플 때에도 나를 계속 도와 달라고 간구했습니다 복잡한 감정을 가누어야 하는 나에게 때로는 하나님을 찬양하는 것도 쉽지 않았습니다. 그러던 중 어머니가 마지막 숨을 거두실 때 나도 모르게 눈물과 함께 “할렐루야” 라는 조용한 고백이 흘러나왔습니다. 여러 해가 지나 시편 30편을 자세히 읽게 될 때까지 나는 그 충격의 순간에 하나님을 찬양한 것에 계속 죄의식을 느꼈습니다.

다윗은 “성전 낙성가”라 불리는 이 시편에서 하나님의 신실하심과 자비하심을 경배했습니다(1-3절). 그는 다른 사람들에게 “그의 거룩한 이름을 찬양하라”(4절)고 격려했습니다. 그리고 다윗은 고난과 소망을 밀접히 연결시키시는 하나님을 깊이 생각했습니다(5절). 그는 슬픔과 기쁨의 시간, 안정과 낙담의 시간이 있다는 것을 인정했으며(6-7절), 도움을 청하는 그의 부르짖음에도 하나님에 대한 확신이 있었습니다(7-10절). 다윗의 찬양의 메아리는 그의 통곡과 춤, 슬픔과 기쁨의 순간들을 하나로 엮은 것이었습니다 (11절). 다윗은 고난과 함께 하나님의 신실하심을 기대하는 이 신비한 복합성을 잘 알고 있는 듯, 하나님께 대한 그의 끝없는 헌신을 노래했습니다(12절).

TEARS OF PRAISE

Years ago, I cared for my mom as she was in hospice. I thanked God for the four months He allowed me to serve as her caregiver and asked Him to help me through the grieving process. I often struggled to praise God as I wrestled with my mixed emotions. But as my mom breathed her last breath and I wept uncontrollably, I whispered, “Hallelujah.” I felt guilty for praising God in that devastating moment until, years later, I took a closer look at Psalm 30.

In David’s song “for the dedication of the temple,” he worshiped God for His faithfulness and mercy (VV. 1–3). He encouraged others to “praise his holy name” (V. 4). Then David explored how intimately God entwines hardship and hope (V. 5). He acknowledged times of grief and rejoicing, times of feeling secure and being dismayed (VV. 6–7). His cries for help remained laced with confidence in God (VV. 7–10). The echo of his praise wove through David’s moments of wailing and dancing, grief and joy (V. 11). As if acknowledging the mystery and complexity of enduring affliction and anticipating God’s faithfulness, David proclaimed his endless devotion to God (V. 12).

Like David, we can sing, “Lord my God, I will praise you forever” (V. 12). Whether we’re happy or hurting, God can help us declare our trust in Him and lead us to worship Him with joyful shouts and tears of praise.

우리에게 말씀하시는 하나님

모르는 번호로 전화가 왔습니다. 그런 전화들은 대부분 음성사서함으로 넘어가게 내버려 두지만 이번엔 받아보았습니다. 전화를 건 사람은 짧은 성경구절을 잠깐 나눌 시간이 있는지 정중하게 물었습니다. 그는 요한계시록 21:3-5을 인용하여 하나님이 “모든 눈물을 그들의 눈에서 어떻게 닦아 주시는지” 이야기했습니다. 그리고 예수님이 어떻게 우리의 보증과 희망이 되시는지를 이야기했습니다. 내가 이미 예수님을 나의 구주로 믿고 있다고 말하자, 그 사람은 나에게 “전도”만 하려는 것이 아니라고 하며 함께 기도해도 되는지 물었습니다. 그리고 그는 나에게 용기와 힘을 달라고 하나님께 기도했습니다.

나는 그 전화를 받고 나서 성경에 나오는 또 다른 “전화”가 생각났습니다. 한밤 중에 하나님께서 어린 사무엘을 부르셨습니다(사무엘상 3:4-10). 그 목소리를 세 번 듣는 동안 사무엘은 엘리 제사장이 부르는 줄 알았습니다. 마침내 사무엘은 엘리 제사장의 말대로 하나님께서 자기를 부르신다는 것을 깨닫고 “말씀하옵소서 주의 종이 듣겠나이다”(10절)라고 했습니다. 이처럼 하나님은 낮에나 밤에나 우리에게 말씀하실 수 있습니다. 우리는 “전화가 오면 받아야” 합니다. 그것은 하나님 앞에서 더 많은 시간을 보내며 그분의 음성을 듣는 것일 수도 있습니다.

나는 “그 전화”에 대해 달리 이렇게 생각해 보았습니다. 만약 ‘우리’가 때때로 다른 사람들에게 하나님의 말씀을 전하는 사람이 되면 어떨까? 다른 사람들을 도울 방법이 우리에게 전혀 없다고 느낄지도 모르겠지만, 하나님의 인도하심을 따라 친구에게 전화를 걸어 “오늘 너와 함께 잠깐 기도해도 되겠니?”하고 물어봐도 좋을 것입니다.

GOD SPEAKING TO US

I received a phone call from an unknown number. Often, I let those calls go to voicemail, but this time I picked up. The random caller asked politely if I had just a minute for him to share a short Bible passage. He quoted Revelation 21:3–5 about how God “will wipe every tear from their eyes.” He talked about Jesus, how he was our assurance and hope. I told him I already know Jesus as my personal Savior. But the caller wasn’t aiming to “witness” to me. Instead, he simply asked if he could pray with me. And he did, asking God to give me encouragement and strength.

That call reminded me of another “call” in Scripture—God called out to the young boy Samuel in the middle of the night (1 SAMUEL 3:4–10). Three times Samuel heard the voice, thinking it was the elderly priest Eli. The final time, following Eli’s instruction, Samuel realized that God was calling him: “Speak, for your servant is listening” (V. 10). Likewise, through our days and nights, God may be speaking to us. We need to “pick up,” which might mean spending more time in His presence and listening for His voice.

I then thought of “the call” in another way. What if we sometimes are the messenger of God’s words to someone else? We might feel we have no way of helping others. But as God guides us, we could phone a friend and ask, “Would it be okay if I just prayed with you today?”

기회를 잡으라

20살의 이신은 대학 입학을 기다리는 동안 3개월의 휴식기간을 청소년 선교 단체에서 섬기기로 했습니다. 코비드-19로 대면접촉이 제한되는 상황에서 이런 일을 하기에 그리 좋은 때는 아니었습니다. 그러나 이신은 곧 방법을 찾아냈습니다. 그녀는 말합니다. “우리는 평소처럼 길거리나 쇼핑몰, 패스트푸드점에서 학생들을 만날 수 없었습니다. 그러나 기독교인 학생들과는 줌으로 계속 만나 서로를 위해 기도하고, 비신자들과는 전화로 접촉했습니다.”

이신은 바울 사도가 디모데에게 권한 대로 “전도자의 일을 한”(디모데후서 4:5) 것입니다. 바울은 사람들이 ‘들어야 할’ 말을 전하는 선생이 아니라 ‘듣고 싶은’ 말을 전하는 선생을 찾을 것이라고 경고했습니다(3-4절). 그럼에도 그는 디모데에게 용기를 갖고 “때를 얻든지 못 얻든지 항상 힘쓸” 것을 요구했습니다. 디모데는 “범사에 오래 참음과 가르침으로 경책하며 경계하며 권하는”(2절) 일에 힘썼습니다.

우리 모두가 전도자나 설교자로 부름받은 것은 아니지만, 누구나 주변 사람들과 신앙을 나누는데 각자의 역할을 맡을 수 있습니다. 믿지 않는 사람들이 그리스도를 몰라 죽어가고 있기에 믿는 사람들에게 힘과 용기가 필요합니다. 하나님의 도우심으로 언제 어디서든 할 수 있는 대로 하나님의 복음을 선포합시다.

SEIZE THE OPPORTUNITY

While waiting to enter the university, twenty-year-old Shin Yi decided to commit three months of her break to serving in a youth mission organization. It seemed like an odd time to do this, given the COVID-19 restrictions that prevented face-to-face meetings. But Shin Yi soon found a way. “We couldn’t meet up with students on the streets, in shopping malls, or fast-food centers like we usually did,” she shared. “But we continued to keep in touch with the Christian students via Zoom to pray for one another and with the non-believers via phone calls.”

Shin Yi did what the apostle Paul encouraged Timothy to do: “Do the work of an evangelist” (2 TIMOTHY 4:5). Paul warned that people would find teachers who would tell them what they wanted to hear and not what they needed to hear (VV. 3–4). Yet Timothy was called to take courage and “be prepared in season and out of season.” He was to “correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction” (V. 2).

Though not all of us are called to be evangelists or preachers, each one of us can play a part in sharing our faith with those around us. Unbelievers are perishing without Christ. Believers need strengthening and encouragement. With God’s help, let’s proclaim His good news whenever and wherever we can.

약할 때 강함

아들이 세 살쯤 되었을 때 나는 한 달 이상의 회복 기간이 필요한 수술을 받게 되었습니다. 수술을 앞둔 나에게 싱크대에 더러운 접시들을 쌓아둔 채 누워있는 나의 모습이 떠올랐습니다. 회복하는 동안 뛰어노는 아이를 잘 돌볼 수 있을지, 식사 준비는 어떻게 할지 도저히 상상이 되지 않았습니다. 나의 연약함이 식구들의 삶의 리듬을 깨트릴까 봐 두려웠습니다.

하나님은 기드온 군대가 미디안과 맞서기 전 그들의 군사력을 의도적으로 줄이셨습니다. 먼저, 두려움에 떠는 이만 이천 명을 집으로 돌려보냈습니다 (사사기 7:3). 그러고 나서 남은 만 명 중에서도 손으로 물을 떠서 마시는 사람들만 남게 했습니다. 결국 남은 사람은 삼백 명에 불과했고, 이 같은 열세로 그 이스라엘 사람들은 자신들의 힘을 의지할 수 없게 되었습니다(5-6 절). 그들은 “내 손이 나를 구원하였다”(2절)고 말할 수 없게 된 것입니다.

우리도 무력하고 무능하게 느껴질 때가 있습니다. 나도 같은 일을 당하고서 하나님이 절실히 필요함을 깨닫게 되었습니다. 하나님은 성령님을 통해 나의 내면을, 친구와 가족의 도움을 통해 나의 외적인 면을 보살펴 주셨습니다. 혼자 해내려는 방식을 한동안 내려놓게 되면서 온전히 하나님을 의지하는 법을 배우게 된 것입니다. “내 능력이 약한 데서 온전하여 짐이라” (고린도후서 12:9)고 하신 말씀처럼 우리는 스스로 할 수 없을 때 비로소 참 소망을 얻을 수 있습니다.

STRENGTH IN WEAKNESS

When my son was nearly three, I needed an operation that would require a month or more of recovery. Prior to the procedure, I imagined myself in bed while stacks of dirty dishes accumulated in the sink. I wasn’t sure how I’d take care of an active toddler and couldn’t picture myself standing in front of the stove to cook our meals. I dreaded the impact my weakness
would have on the rhythm of our lives.

God intentionally weakened Gideon’s forces before his troops confronted the Midianites. First, those who were afraid were allowed to leave—twenty-two thousand men went home (JUDGES 7:3). Then, of the ten thousand who remained, only those who scooped water into their hands to drink could stay. Just three hundred men were left, but this disadvantage prevented the Israelites from relying on themselves (VV. 5–6). They couldn’t say, “My own strength has saved me” (V. 2).

Many of us experience times when we feel drained and powerless. When this happened to me, I realized how much I needed God. He encouraged me inwardly through His Spirit and outwardly through the helpfulness of friends and family. I had to let go of my independence for a while, but this taught me how to lean more fully on God. Because “[His] power is made perfect in weakness” (2 CORINTHIANS 12:9), we can have hope when we can’t meet our needs on our own.

가장 필요한 치유

2020년 부활주일, 브라질의 리우데자네이루를 내려다보는 유명한 조각상 ‘구세주 그리스도상’에 예수님께서 의사 가운을 입은 모습을 연출하는 조명이 비추어졌습니다. 그리스도를 의사로 표현한 감동적인 모습은 코로나바이러스 팬데믹과 사투를 벌이는 최전방 의료진에 대한 경의를 표하기 위함이었습니다. 그 형상은 위대한 의사로 흔히 묘사되는 예수님을 생생하게 나타내 보여주었습니다(마가복음 2:17).

예수님은 이 땅에서의 사역 초기에 맹인 바디메오(마가복음 10:46-52), 나병환자(누가복음 5:12-16), 그리고 중풍병자(마태복음 9:1-8)와 같이 육체적으로 고통받는 많은 사람들을 고쳐주셨습니다. 예수님이 한 끼 식사를 가지고 배고픈 큰 무리를 먹이신 예에서 보는 것처럼, 주님은 그를 따르는 이들의 건강도 돌봐 주셨습니다(요한복음 6:1-13). 이런 기적들은 모두 예수님의 전능한 능력과 사람들을 향한 그분의 참된 사랑을 보여줍니다.

그러나 예수님의 가장 위대한 치유는 이사야 선지자가 예언한 대로 그의 죽으심과 부활을 통해서 왔습니다. 우리의 죄 때문에 하나님과 단절되는 가장 큰 절망 속에서 “[예수님이] 채찍에 맞으므로 우리는 나음을 받은”(이사야 53:5) 것입니다. 예수님께서 우리의 모든 건강 문제들을 다 고쳐 주시는 것은 아니지만 우리에게 가장 필요한 치유를 행하시는 것을 믿을 수 있습니다. 그 치유는 바로 하나님과 우리 사이의 관계의 회복입니다.

DEEPER HEALING

On Easter Sunday 2020, the famous Christ the Redeemer statue that overlooks Rio de Janeiro in Brazil was illuminated in a way that appeared to clothe Jesus in the attire of a physician. The poignant portrayal of Christ as a doctor was in tribute to the many frontline health-care workers battling the coronavirus pandemic. The imagery brings to life the common description of Jesus as our Great Physician (MARK 2:17).

Jesus healed many people of their physical afflictions during His earthly ministry: blind Bartimaeus (10:46–52), a leper (LUKE 5:12–16), and a paralytic (MATTHEW 9:1–8), to name a few. His care for the health of those following Him was also demonstrated in providing for their hunger by multiplying a simple meal to feed the masses (JOHN 6:1–13). Each of these miracles reveal both Jesus’ mighty power and His genuine love for people.

His greatest act of healing, however, came through His death and resurrection, as foretold by the prophet Isaiah. It is “by [Jesus’] wounds we are healed” of our worst affliction: our separation from God as a result of our sins (ISAIAH 53:5). Though Jesus doesn’t heal all our health challenges, we can trust the cure for our deepest need: the healing He brings to our relationship with God.

예수님께 달려가기

벤과 그의 친구들은 파리 여행 중 한 유명한 박물관을 찾았습니다. 벤은 미술 학도는 아니었지만 유진 버낸드의 ‘부활의 아침에 무덤으로 달려가는 제자 베드로와 요한’이라는 제목의 그림을 보고 경외감이 들었습니다. 별다른 설명 없이도 베드로와 요한의 표정과 손동작이 많은 것을 말해주고 있었고, 관람객으로 하여금 그림에 동화되어 그들의 고조된 감정을 함께 느끼도록 해 주었습니다.

그 그림은 요한복음 20:1-10 말씀을 바탕으로 예수님의 빈 무덤으로 달려가는 두 사람을(4절) 묘사하고 있습니다. 이 명화는 감정적인 혼돈에 휩싸인 두 제자의 생생한 모습을 포착하고 있습니다. 그때 그들에게 온전히 형성된 믿음이 있었던 것은 아니었지만 그들은 올바른 방향으로 달려갔으며 마침내 부활하신 예수님을 만났습니다(19-29절). 그들의 모습은 지금까지 수 세기 동안 예수님을 찾았던 사람들의 모습과 다르지 않았습니다. 우리는 빈 무덤이나 명화를 보는 경험이 없어도 복음을 생생히 알 수 있습니다. 성경은 우리에게 의심이나 의문, 확신 못하는 것이 있어도 예수님과 그분의 사랑을 소망하고 추구하며 그 방향으로 달려가라고 강권합니다. 내일 부활절을 기쁘게 맞으며, “너희가 온 마음으로 나를 구하면 나를 찾을 것이요 나를 만나리라”(예레미야 29:13)고 말씀하시는 하나님의 신실하심을 기억하기를 바랍니다.

RUNNING TO JESUS

On a trip to Paris, Ben and his friends found themselves at one of the renowned museums in the city. Though Ben wasn’t a student of art, he was in awe as he looked upon the painting titled The Disciples Peter and John Running to the Sepulchre on the Morning of the Resurrection by Eugène Burnand. Without words, the looks on the faces of Peter and John and the position of their hands speak volumes, inviting onlookers to step into their shoes and share their adrenaline-charged emotions.

Based on John 20:1–10, the painting portrays the two running in the direction of the empty tomb of Jesus (V. 4). The masterpiece captures the intensity of the two emotionally conflicted disciples. Though at that juncture theirs wasn’t a fully formed faith, they were running in the right direction, and eventually the resurrected Jesus revealed Himself to them (VV. 19–29). Their search was not unlike that of Jesus seekers through the centuries. Although we may be removed from the experiences of an empty tomb or a brilliant piece of art, we can clearly see the good news. Scripture compels us to hope and seek and run in the direction of Jesus and His love—even with doubts, questions, and uncertainties. Tomorrow, as we celebrate Easter, may we remember God’s faithfulness: “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart” (JEREMIAH 29:13).
