굳건한 하나님의 임재

2020년은 여성에게 투표권을 부여하는 미국 수정헌법 제19조의 통과 100주년을 기념하는 해였습니다. 옛날 사진들을 보면 행진에 참가한 사람들이 시편 68편 11절, “주께서 말씀을 주시니 소식을 공포하는 여자들은 큰 무리라”라는 말씀이 선명히 새겨진 현수막들을 들고 있는 것을 볼 수 있습니다.

시편 68편에서, 다윗은 하나님을 갇힌 자들을 이끌어 내시는 분으로 (6절), 지친 하나님의 백성들을 하나님의 풍성함으로 원기를 돋우고 새롭게 하시는 분으로 묘사하고 있습니다(9-10절). 이 시편의 35개 구절에서 다윗은 하나님을 42번 언급하면서 하나님이 불의와 고난에서 그들을 구하기 위해 어떻게 늘 함께 하셨는지를 보여줍니다. 그리고 큰 무리의 여자들이 이 사실을 공포합니다(11절).

투표권을 위해 행진했던 여성들이 시편 68편이 선포하고 있는 모든 내용을 충분히 이해했든 그렇지 않든, 사진 속의 그 현수막은 영원한 진리를 분명히 보여주고 있습니다. “고아의 아버지시며 과부의 재판장”(5절)이신 하나님은 그분의 백성들보다 앞서 가시며 축복과 소생함과 기쁨이 있는 곳으로 그들을 인도하십니다.

하나님은 그분의 백성들, 특별히 연약하고 고난 중에 있는 이들과 늘 함께하셨던 것을 기억하며 오늘 힘을 내십시오. 성령을 통해서 전에도 그러셨듯이, 하나님은 여전히 굳건하게 지금 우리와 함께 하십니다.

GOD’S POWERFUL PRESENCE

In 2020, celebrations marked the one hundredth anniversary of the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which gave women the right to vote. Old photographs show marchers with banners emblazoned with the words of Psalm 68:11: “The Lord giveth the word. The women that publish the tidings are a great host” (asv).

In Psalm 68, David describes God as the One who leads the oppressed from their captivity (V. 6), refreshing and renewing His weary people from His bountiful riches (VV. 9–10). In this psalm’s thirty-five verses, David references God forty-two times, revealing how He’s constantly been with them, at work to rescue them from injustice and suffering. And a mighty throng of women proclaim this truth (V. 11).

Whether the women who marched for voting rights fully understood all that Psalm 68 was declaring, their banners proclaimed a timeless truth. God, the “father to the fatherless” and “a defender of widows” (V. 5), goes out before His people leading them to places of blessing, refreshment, and joy.

Be encouraged today, remembering that God’s presence has always been with His people, and in a special way with the vulner- able and suffering. As in the past through His Spirit, God is still powerfully present with us today. - LISA M. SAMRA

결코 너무 멀리 떨어져 있지 않다

라지는 어렸을 때 예수님을 구주로 믿었지만, 얼마 후 믿음에서 멀어져 하나님과 동떨어진 삶을 살았습니다. 그러던 어느 날, 예수님과의 관계를 새롭게 하려고 교회로 돌아가기로 했으나 한 여성이 오랫동안 교회에 출석하지 않았다고 그를 질책하며 꾸짖었습니다. 그 꾸짖음은 라지의 여러 해 동안의 방황에 대한 부끄러움과 죄의식을 더해 주었습니다. ‘나는 희망이 없는 걸까?’라고 그는 생각했습니다. 그때 시몬 베드로가 예수님을 부인했지만(누가복음 22:34, 60-61) 예수님이 어떻게 그를 회복시키셨는지 떠올랐습니다(요한복음 21:15-17).

베드로는 어떤 질책이라도 다 받을 준비가 되어 있었으나, 그가 받은 것은 모두 용서와 회복이었습니다. 예수님은 베드로의 부인에 대해서는 얘기도 꺼내지 않으시고, 주님을 향한 그의 사랑을 재확인하고 주님을 따르는 자들을 돌볼 기회를 주셨습니다(요한복음 21:15-17). 베드로가 예수님을 부인하기 전에 하신 말씀이 이루어지고 있었습니다. “너는 돌이킨 후에 네 형제를 굳게 하라” (누가복음 22:32).

라지는 베드로와 같은 용서와 회복을 하나님께 간구했습니다. 라지는 지금 예수님과 가까이 동행할 뿐만 아니라 교회에서 섬기며 다른 신자들도 돕고 있습니다. 우리가 하나님으로부터 아무리 멀리 떨어져 있었다 해도, 하나님은 용서하시고 우리가 돌아오는 것을 반기실 뿐만 아니라 우리를 회복시켜 우리가 그분을 사랑하고 섬기고 영화롭게 할 수 있도록 항상 준비하고 계십니다. 우리는 결코 하나님과 너무 멀리 떨어져 있지 않습니다. 그분의 팔은 사랑으로 늘 열려 있습니다.

NEVER TOO FAR

Raj had trusted Jesus as Savior in his youth, but soon afterward, he drifted from the faith and led a life apart from God. Then one day, he made the decision to renew his relationship with Jesus and go back to church—only to be scolded by a woman who berated him for being absent for all these years. The scolding added to Raj’s sense of shame and guilt for his years of drifting. Am I beyond hope? he wondered. Then he recalled how Christ had restored Simon Peter (JOHN 21:15–17) even though he’d denied Him (LUKE 22:34, 60–61).

Whatever scolding Peter might have expected, all he received was forgiveness and restoration. Jesus didn’t even mention Peter’s denial but instead gave him a chance to reaffirm his love for Christ and take care of His followers (JOHN 21:15–17). Jesus’ words before Peter disowned Him were being fulfilled: “When you have turned back, strengthen your brothers” (LUKE 22:32).

Raj asked God for that same forgiveness and restoration, and today he’s not only walking closely with Jesus but serving in a church and supporting other believers as well. No matter how far we’ve strayed from God, He’s always ready not only to forgive us and welcome us back but also to restore us so we can love, serve, and glorify Him. We’re never too far from God: His loving arms are wide open. - LESLIE KOH

이 모든 걸 혼자서?

수의 가정이 눈앞에서 산산이 깨어지고 있었습니다. 남편은 갑자기 집을 떠났고 수와 아이들은 혼란스러웠고 화가 났습니다. 수는 남편에게 함께 결혼상담을 받으러 가자고 했지만 남편은 모든 문제가 그녀에게 있다면서 거절했습니다. 남편이 다시는 돌아오지 않을 수도 있다는 것을 깨닫자 수는 두려움과 절망에 빠졌습니다. 그녀 혼자서 자신과 아이들을 돌볼 수 있을까요?

아브라함과 사라의 종이였던 하갈도 그런 생각을 했습니다. 하나님께서 그들에게 약속대로 아들을 주시겠다고 한 것을(창세기 12, 15장) 기다리지 못하고 사라는 하갈을 남편에게 내주었고 하갈은 이스마엘을 낳았습니다 (16:1-4, 15). 하지만 하나님께서 하신 약속대로 사라가 이삭을 낳자 가족 간의 갈등이 생기게 되고, 아브라함은 얼마 안 되는 물과 음식을 주고는 하갈과 아들 이스마엘을 떠나보냈습니다(21:8-21). 그때의 하갈의 절망감을 상상할 수 있겠습니까? 얼마 지나지 않아 사막에서 그들의 식량은 바닥이 났습니다. 어찌할 바도 모르고 자신의 아들이 죽는 것도 보고 싶지 않아 하갈은 이스마엘 을 떨기나무숲에 두고 멀리 걸어갔습니다. 하갈과 이스마엘은 흐느끼며 울기 시작했습니다. 그러나 “하나님이 그 아이가 우는 소리를 들으셨습니다”(17 절, 새번역). 하나님이 그들이 우는 소리를 들으시고 그들에게 필요한 것들을 공급해 주시고 그들과 함께 하셨습니다.

완전히 혼자라고 느끼는 절망의 순간에 우리는 하나님께 울부짖습니다. 그런 순간들과 우리의 온 삶 동안에 하나님께서 우리를 들으시고 필요한 것을 채워 주시고 우리 곁에 가까이 계시다는 것이 얼마나 위안이 되는지 모릅니다.

ALL ALONE?

Sue’s family was falling apart before her eyes. Her husband had suddenly left the home, and she and her children were confused and angry. She asked him to go for marriage counseling with her, but he wouldn’t because he claimed the problems were hers. Panic and hopelessness set in when she realized he might never come back. Would she be able to care for herself and her children alone?

Hagar, a servant of Abraham and Sarah, faced those thoughts as well. Impatient for God to give them a son as promised (GENESIS 12, 15), Sarah gave Hagar to her husband, and Hagar gave birth to Ishmael (16:1–4, 15). However, when God fulfilled His promise and Sarah gave birth to Isaac, family tensions erupted such that Abraham sent Hagar away with their son Ishmael with just some water and food (21:8–21). Can you imagine her desperation? Soon they ran out of provisions in the desert. Not knowing what to do and not wanting to see her son die, Hagar put Ishmael under a bush and walked a distance away. They both began to sob. But “God heard the boy crying” (V. 17). He heard their cries, provided for their needs, and was with them.

Times of desperation when we feel all alone cause us to cry out to God. What a comfort to know that during those moments and throughout our lives, He hears us, provides for us, and stays near to us. - ANNE CETAS

최근에 미켈란젤로의 모세 조각상을 사진으로 보았는데, 그 사진을 자세히 들여다 보니 모세의 오른팔에 불룩하게 솟은 작은 근육이 보였습니다. 소지신근이라는 이 근육은 새끼손가락을 들어 올릴 때만 수축됩니다. 세밀한 묘사의 대가로 알려진 미켈란젤로는 인체를 면밀히 관찰해서 많은 사람들이 간과하는 세세한 특징을 조각에 표현했습니다. 미켈란젤로는 대다수의 다른 조각가들보다 인체를 더 정확히 파악하고 있었지만, 사실 화강암에 조각된 섬세한 부분들은 보다 더 깊은 어떤 것, 곧 인간에 내재되어 있는 영혼을 나타내고자 하는 그의 시도를 보여주는 것이었습니다. 물론 그 부분에 있어서 미켈란젤로는 언제나 성공하지 못했습니다.

오직 하나님만이 인간 심성의 가장 깊은 실체를 알고 계십니다. 우리가 아무리 주의 깊게 통찰력을 가지고 서로를 관찰한다 하더라도 그것은 진실의 그림자에 불과합니다. 그러나 하나님은 그림자보다 더 깊은 것을 보고 계십니다. 예레미야 선지자는 “여호와여 주께서 나를 아시고 나를 보십니다”(12:3)라고 말했습니다. 우리에 대한 하나님의 지식은 이론적이거나 지적인 것이 아닙니다. 하나님은 멀리서 우리를 바라보시지 않고, 오히려 우리가 누구인지 그 숨겨진 실체를 들여다보고 계십니다. 하나님은 우리가 스스로를 이해하려고 애쓰는 일까지 포함하여 우리 내면의 삶의 깊은 부분들을 알고 계십니다.

우리가 어떤 어려움을 겪거나 어떤 마음의 상태에 있든지 하나님은 우리를 보시고 우리를 진정으로 알고 계십니다.

GOD KNOWS US

I recently saw a photograph of Michelangelo’s sculpture Moses, in which a close-up view showed a small bulging muscle on Moses’ right arm. This muscle is the extensor digiti minimi, and the contraction only appears when someone lifts their pinky. Michelangelo, known as a master of intricate details, paid close attention to the human bodies he sculpted, adding intimate features most everyone else would miss. Michelangelo knew the human body in ways few other sculptors have, but the details he carved into granite were his attempts to reveal something deeper—the soul, the interior life of human beings. And, of course, there Michelangelo always fell short.

Only God knows the deepest realities of the human heart. Whatever we see of one another, no matter how attentive or insightful it might be, is only a shadow of the truth. But God sees deeper than the shadows. “You know me, Lord,” the prophet Jeremiah said; “you see me” (12:3). God’s knowledge of us isn’t theoretical or cerebral. He doesn’t observe us from a distance. Rather, He peers into the hidden realities of who we are. God knows the depths of our interior lives, even those things we struggle to understand ourselves.

No matter our struggles or what’s going on in our hearts, God sees us and truly knows us. - WINN COLLIER

하나님께 귀 기울이기

예전에 차를 운전하며 대학과 집을 오갈 때, 사막에 있는 우리 집으로 가는 길은 고통스러울 정도로 지루했습니다. 길게 뻗은 일직선 도로였기 때문에 가끔은 규정속도보다 빨리 달렸는데, 처음에는 고속도로 순찰대로부터 경고를 받았지만, 그 다음에는 과속 티켓을 받았습니다. 그리고, 나중에 같은 장소에서 두 번째 티켓을 받았습니다.

말을 제대로 듣지 않으면 불행한 결과를 가져올 수 있습니다. 이런 한 가지 비극적인 사례를 선하고 신실한 왕이었던 요시야의 삶에서 찾아볼 수 있습니다. 애굽 왕 느고가 바벨론과의 전쟁에서 앗수르를 돕기 위해 유다
지역에 들어왔을 때, 요시야는 그를 대적하기 위해 나갔습니다. 느고가 요시야에게 사신을 보내어 “하나님이 나에게 명령하사 속히 하라 하셨은즉 하나님이 나와 함께 계시니 그대는 하나님을 거스르지 말라”(역대하 35:21)고 했습니다. 하나님께서 실제로 느고를 보내셨지만 요시야는 “하나님의 입에서
나온 느고의 말을 듣지 아니하고 므깃도 골짜기에 이르러 싸웠습니다”(22절). 요시야는 전쟁에서 치명상을 입었고, “온 유다와 예루살렘 사람들이 요시야를 슬퍼했습니다”(24절).

하나님을 사랑했던 요시야는 하나님의 말씀이나 다른 사람들을 통한 하나님의 지혜에 귀 기울이지 않고 자신의 방식을 고집하는 것은 결코 끝이 좋지 않다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 하나님께서 우리에게 항상 스스로를 점검하고 하나님의 지혜를 온 마음으로 받아들이는 겸손을 주시기를 간구합니다.

LISTENING TO GOD

Back when I was driving to college and back home again, the road to our house in the desert seemed painfully dull. Because it was long and straight, I found myself driving faster than I should have more than once. First, I was given a warning from the highway patrol. Then I received a ticket. Then I was cited a second time in the very same place.

Refusing to listen can have unfortunate consequences. One tragic example of this is from the life of Josiah, a good and faithful king. When Necho, the king of Egypt, marched through Judah’s territory to help Assyria in battle against Babylon, Josiah went out to counter him. Necho sent messengers telling Josiah, “God has told me to hurry; so stop opposing God, who is with me” (2 CHRONICLES 35:21). God really did send Necho, but Josiah “would not listen to what Necho had said at God’s command but went to fight him on the plain of Megiddo” (V. 22). Josiah was fatally injured in the battle, “and all Judah and Jerusalem mourned for him” (V. 24).

Josiah, who loved God, discovered that insisting on his own way without taking the time to listen to Him or His wisdom through others never ends well. May God give us the humility we need to always check ourselves and take His wisdom to heart. - JAMES BANKS

진짜 사랑

“마치 내가 서있는 카페트가 갑자기 확 당겨진 것 같은 느낌이었어. 그 사실을 알고 나서 크게 얻어맞은 것 같은 충격을 받았어.” 약혼자가 다른 여자를 몰래 만나고 있다는 사실을 알게 된 조지에가 한 말입니다. 그녀는 예전에도 이런 식으로 관계가 끝났던 적이 있었습니다. 그래서 나중에 성경공부를 하며 하나님의 사랑에 대해 들었을 때 그녀는 이렇게 의심하지 않을 수 없었습니다. ‘이것도 또다른 거짓말이 아닐까? 나를 사랑한다는 하나님의 말씀을 믿다가 다시 상처받는 것은 아닐까?’

조지에처럼 우리도 잘못된 관계를 경험하여, 누군가가 우리에게 사랑의 약속을 해도 믿지 못하고 경계하거나 심지어 불안한 마음이 들 수도 있습니다. 하나님의 사랑에 대해서도 이와 같이 생각하여 어딘가 함정이 있는 것은 아닌지 의심할 수도 있지만, 하나님의 사랑에는 속임수가 없습니다. “우리가 아직 죄인 되었을 때에 그리스도께서 우리를 위하여 죽으심으로 하나님께서 우리에 대한 자기의 사랑을 확증하셨습니다”(로마서 5:8).

조지에는 말합니다. “마침내 나는 하나님께서 나를 위해 죽으심으로 이미 그분의 사랑을 입증하셨다는 것을 깨달았어.” 내 친구는 죄로 가득한 우리의 삶 때문에 하나님과 멀어졌을 때, 하나님께서 우리에게 먼저 다가오셔서 우리를 대신하여 예수님을 죽게 하셨다는 사실을 깨닫게 되었습니다(로마서 5:10, 요한 1서 2:2). 예수님의 죽으심으로 이제 우리의 죄는 용서받고, 주님과 영원히 함께 살 수 있는 소망을 갖게 되었습니다(요한복음 3:16).

진정으로 하나님의 사랑을 신뢰하고 있는지 의심이 들 때마다 그리스도께서 우리를 위해 십자가에서 하신 일을 기억합시다. 주님이 신실하시다는 것을 알기 때문에 우리는 우리를 사랑한다는 그분의 약속을 신뢰할 수 있습니다.

THIS LOVE IS REAL

“I felt like the rug had been pulled from under me,” Jojie said. “The shock of the discovery was like a physical blow.” She’d found out that her fiancé was seeing someone else. Jojie’s previous relationship had ended similarly. So when she later heard about God’s love at a Bible study, she couldn’t help wondering: Is this another scam? Will I get hurt if I believe God when He says He loves me?

Like Jojie, we may have experienced troubled relationships that left us feeling wary—or even afraid—of trusting someone’s promise of love. We may even feel this way about God’s love, wondering where the catch is. There is, however, no catch. “God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (ROMANS 5:8).

“Eventually, I realized God had already proven His love,” Jojie says, “by dying for me.” My friend discovered that since our sinful state separated us from God, He reached out to us by giving Jesus to die on our behalf (ROMANS 5:10; 1 JOHN 2:2). Because of this, our sins are forgiven, and we can look forward to eternity with Him (JOHN 3:16).

Whenever we wonder whether we can truly trust God’s love, let’s remember what Christ did for us on the cross. We can trust His promises of love, knowing that He’s faithful. - KAREN HUANG

신선한 오아시스

앤드류의 가족은 케냐에 사파리 여행을 갔을 때 허허벌판에 있는 작은 호수에 많은 동물들이 자주 나타나 물을 먹는 모습을 재미있게 지켜보았습니다. 기린, 영양, 하마와 물새 등, 여러 동물들이 이 생명수를 찾아왔습니다. 물을 찾아 오가는 동물들을 보면서 앤드류는 “성경은 마치 신성한 샘터와 같다”고 생각했습니다. 성경은 길 안내와 지혜의 근원일 뿐 아니라, 모든 삶의 여정의 사람들이 갈증을 해소할 수 있는 신선한 오아시스이기도 하기 때문입니다.

A REFRESHING OASIS

When Andrew and his family went on safari in Kenya, they had the pleasure of watching a variety of animals frequenting a small lake that appeared in the scrabbly landscape. Giraffes, wildebeests, hippopotamuses, and waterfowl all traveled to this life-giving source of water. As Andrew observed their comings and goings, he thought how the “Bible is like a divine watering hole”—not only is it a source of guidance and wisdom but it’s a refreshing oasis where people from all walks of life can quench their thirst.

Andrew’s observation echoed the psalmist who called people “blessed” when they delight in and meditate on God’s law, a term used in the Old Testament to describe His instruction and commandments. Those who meditate on the Scriptures are “like a tree planted by treams of water, which yields its fruit in season” (PSALM 1:3). Just as a tree’s roots reach down into the soil to find the source of refreshment, people who truly believe in and love God will root themselves deeply in Scripture and find the strength they need.

Submitting ourselves to His wisdom will keep our foundations embedded in Him; we won’t be “like chaff that the wind blows away” (V. 4). When we ponder what God has given to us in the Bible, we gain nourishment that can lead to our bearing fruit that lasts. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

예수님 안에서 안식을 찾음

불안하여 안식하지 못하는 영혼은 부와 성공으로도 결코 만족하지 못합니다. 지금은 작고한 한 컨트리 뮤직 스타가 이 진실을 증명해 줍니다. 그의 40여 개의 음반이 빌보드 컨트리 뮤직 상위 10위 안에 들었으며, 싱글 차트 1위에 오른 곡들도 그것만큼 많이 있었습니다. 하지만 그는 결혼을 여러 번 했으며 수감 생활을 하기도 했습니다. 그의 모든 성공에도 불구하고 그는 이렇게 한탄한 적이 있습니다. “내 영혼에는 그 어떤 활동이나 결혼이나 의미로도 이겨내지 못했던 불안감이 있습니다.... 지금도 여전히 내 속에 상당히 자리잡고 있는 이 불안은 내가 죽는 날까지 계속 남아 있을 것입니다.” 안타깝지만, 그는 그의 삶이 끝나기 ‘전에’ 영혼의 안식을 찾을 수도 있었습니다.

FINDING REST IN JESUS

The restless soul is never satisfied with wealth and success. A deceased country music icon could testify to this truth. He had nearly forty of his albums appear on Billboard’s country music top-ten charts and just as many number one singles. But he also had multiple marriages nd spent time in prison. Even with all his achievements, he once lamented: “There’s a restlessness in my soul that I’ve never conquered, not with motion, marriages or meaning. . . . It’s still there to a degree. And it will be till the day I die.” Sadly, he could have found rest in his soul before his life ended.

Jesus invites all those, like this musician, who have become weary from toiling in sin and its consequences to come to Him personally: “Come to me,” He says. When we receive salvation in Jesus, He will take the burdens from us and “give [us] rest” (MATTHEW 11:28). The only requirements are to believe in Him and then to learn from Him how to live the abundant life He provides (JOHN 10:10). Taking on the yoke of Jesus’ discipleship results in our finding “rest for [our] souls” (MATTHEW 11:29).

When we come to Jesus, He doesn’t abbreviate our accountability to God. He gives peace to our restless souls by providing us a new and less burdensome way to live in Him. He gives us true rest. - MARVIN WILLIAMS

개코원숭이, 나귀, 그리고 나

잭은 기차를 올바른 선로로 보내는 방법을 알고 있었습니다. 그는 남아프리카 공화국의 유텐헤이그에서 9년을 일하는 동안, 기관차가 역으로 들어오면서 진행하려는 방향을 기적 소리로 알리면 이를 듣고 선로 전환기를 작동했는데, 한 번도 실수한 적이 없었습니다.

그런데 잭은 차크마 개코원숭이입니다. 그는 철도 신호수인 제임스 와이드에게 돌봄을 받다가, 이제는 반대로 그가 제임스를 보살펴 주고 있었습니다. 와이드는 전에 움직이는 열차 사이로 추락하여 두 다리를 잃었습니다. 그는 잭을 훈련시켜 집안일을 돕게 했는데, 잭은 곧 와이드의 직장 일도 돕게 되어 기차가 들어오는 신호에 반응하여 그들의 선로에 맞는 레버를 당기는 법도 배운 것입니다.

성경에는 놀라운 방법으로 사람을 도운 또 다른 동물 이야기가 나옵니다. 바로 발람의 나귀입니다. 발람은 이스라엘을 해치려는 왕을 섬기는 이교도 예언자였습니다. 발람이 나귀를 타고 왕을 도우려 가는 길에 “여호와께서 나귀 입을 여시니” 나귀가 발람에게 말했습니다(민수기 22:28). 하나님은 나귀가 말하게 하심으로 “발람의 눈”을 열어(31절) 그에게 임박한 위험을 경고하시고 그가 하나님의 백성을 해치지 못하도록 하셨습니다.

기찻길 개코원숭이? 말하는 나귀? 안될 이유가 없지요? 하나님께서 선한 목적을 위해 이 놀라운 동물들을 사용하실 수 있다면, 당신과 나도 사용하실 수 있다고 믿는 것은 전혀 무리가 아닙니다. 주님을 바라보고 주님의 능력을 구하면 우리가 가능하다고 생각하는 것보다 훨씬 더 많이 이룰 수 있습니다.

A BABOON, A DONKEY, AND ME

Jack knew how to put trains on the right track. In nine years of work, he never missed a track switch as locomotives drew near the Uitenhage, South Africa, station, indicating by their whistles the direction they were to go.

Jack was also a chacma baboon. He was cared for by railway signalman James Wide, and Jack in turn took care of James. Wide had lost both his legs in a fall between moving rail cars. He trained Jack to help him with tasks around the house and soon Jack assisted him at work also, learning how to respond to the incoming trains’ signals by pulling corresponding levers for their tracks.

The Bible tells of another animal that helped someone in a surprising way—Balaam’s donkey. Balaam was a pagan prophet serving a king who intended to harm Israel. As Balaam was riding his donkey en route to assist the king, “the Lord opened the donkey’s mouth” and it spoke to Balaam (NUMBERS 22:28). The donkey’s speech was part of the way God opened “Balaam’s eyes” (V. 31), warned him of imminent danger, and kept him from harming His people.

A railway baboon? A talking donkey? Why not? If God can use these amazing animals for good purposes, it’s not at all far-fetched to believe He can use you and me as well. Looking to Him and seeking His strength, we can accomplish more than we ever thought possible.

다른 사람의 필요를 봄

아버지가 돌아가시기 전 며칠 동안 간호사 한 명이 아버지 방에 들러 아버지께 면도를 해 드려도 되는지 내게 물었습니다. 간호사 레이첼은 아버지 얼굴을 부드럽게 면도하면서 “아버님 세대의 나이 드신 분들은 매일 깔끔하게 면도하는 것을 좋아해요.”라고 설명했습니다. 레이첼은 도움이 필요한 사람을 보면 그저 자연스럽게 친절과 존엄성과 존경심을 보여주는 행동이 나왔습니다. 그녀가 베푸는 보살핌을 보면서 친구 줄리가 떠올랐습니다. “예쁘게 보이는 것”이 중요한 어머니를 위해 줄리는 지금도 노모의 손톱을 칠해줍니다.

사도행전 9장에는 가난한 이들을 위해 손수 지은 옷을 나누어 주면서 친절을 베풀었던 도르가 (다비다라고도 불림)라는 제자 이야기가 나옵니다(36, 39절). 도르가가 죽자 친구들이 그녀의 방에 가득 모여 다른 이들을 돕기를 좋아했던 이 친절한 여성을 눈물로 애도했습니다.

하지만 도르가의 이야기는 여기서 끝나지 않았습니다. 그녀의 시신이 놓여 있는 곳으로 불려온 베드로는 무릎을 꿇고 기도했습니다. 베드로는 하나님의 권능으로 그녀의 이름을 부르며 “다비다야 일어나라”고 했습니다 (40절). 그러자 놀랍게도 도르가가 눈을 뜨고 일어섰습니다. 그녀의 친구들이 도르가가 살아난 것을 알게 되면서 그 소문은 순식간에 온 동네에 퍼졌고 “많은 사람이 주를 믿었습니다”(42절).

도르가는 살아난 다음날을 어떻게 보냈을까요? 아마도 예전과 똑같이 다른 사람들의 필요를 보고 그것들을 채워주었을 것입니다.

SEEING A NEED

In the last few days of my dad’s life, one of the nurses dropped by his room and asked me if she could give him a shave. As Rachel gently pulled the razor across his face, she explained, “Older men of his generation like to have a neat shave every day.” Rachel had seen a need and acted on her instinct to show kindness, dignity, and respect to someone. The tender care she provided reminded me of my friend Julie who still paints her elderly mother’s nails because it’s important to her mom that she “look pretty.”

Acts 9 tells us about a disciple named Dorcas (also known as Tabitha) who showed kindness by providing handmade clothing for the poor (VV. 36, 39). When she died, her room was filled with friends who tearfully mourned this kind woman who loved helping others.

But Dorcas’ story didn’t end there. When Peter was brought to where her body lay, he knelt and prayed. In God’s power, he called her by name, saying, “Tabitha, get up” (V. 40). Amazingly, Dorcas opened her eyes and rose to her feet. When her friends realized she was alive, word spread quickly through the town and “many people believed in the Lord” (V. 42).

And how did Dorcas spend the next day of her life? Probably exactly as she had before—seeing the needs of people and filling them.
