주님의 빛을 반사하기

화가 아만드 카브레라는 아름답게 반사된 빛을 풍경 유화에 그려 넣을 때 “반사광은 언제나 본래 빛만큼 강할 수 없다”는 미술에서의 주요 원칙을 가지고 작업합니다. 초보 화가들이 반사광을 사실보다 강하게 표현하는 경향이 있음을 관찰한 그는 “반사된 빛은 그늘의 한 부분이기 때문에 그것은 보조하는 역할을 해야지 그림에서 직접 빛을 받는 부분처럼 밝아서는 안 된다.”고 말합니다.

우리는 성경에서 예수님을 “사람들의 빛”(요한복음 1:4)이라고 한 것에서 이와 비슷한 원리를 봅니다. 세례 요한은 “이 빛에 대해서 증거하여 사람들이 자기를 통해 믿도록 하기 위해서 왔습니다”(7절, 현대인의 성경). 복음서의 저자는 “그(요한)는 이 빛이 아니요 이 빛에 대하여 증언하러 온 자라”(8절) 고 말합니다.

우리는 세례 요한과 마찬가지로 믿지 않는 세상의 그늘에 사는 사람들에게 그리스도의 빛을 반사해 비추도록 하나님께 선택받았습니다. 우리가 이 역할을 해야 하는 이유는 어떤 이의 말처럼 “믿지 않는 사람들은 그리스도의 강렬한 영광의 빛을 직접 보는 것을 감당할 수 없을 것이기 때문”입니다.

카브레라는 미술을 배우는 제자들에게 “한 장면을 그릴 때 어떤 물체든지 직접 빛을 받으면 다시 빛을 발하게 되어 있다”고 가르칩니다. 마찬가지로 “모든 사람을 비추는 참 빛”(9절, 현대인의 성경)이신 예수님과 함께 우리도 증인들로 빛날 수 있습니다. 우리가 예수님을 반사할 때 세상이 놀랄 정도로 그의 영광이 우리를 통해 빛날 수 있기를 바랍니다.

REFLECTING HIS LIGHT

To capture the beauty of reflective light in his landscape oil paintings, artist Armand Cabrera works with a key artistic principle: “Reflected light is never as strong as its source light.” He observes that novice painters tend to exaggerate reflected light. He says, “Reflected light belongs to the shadow and as such it must support, not compete with the lighted areas of your painting.”

We hear similar insight in the Bible concerning Jesus as “the light of all mankind” (JOHN 1:4). John the Baptist “came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe” (V. 7). The gospel writer tells us, “He himself [John] was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light” (V. 8).

As with John, we’re chosen by God to reflect Christ’s light to those living in the shadows of an unbelieving world. This is our role, as one source says, “perhaps because unbelievers are not able to bear the full blazing glory of His light firsthand.”

Cabrera teaches his art students that “anything that has direct light falling on it in a scene becomes a source of light itself.” Similarly, with Jesus as “the true light that gives light to everyone” (V. 9), we can shine as witnesses. As we reflect Him, may the world be amazed to see His glory shine through us.

8번 배심원

1957년의 명화 ‘12인의 성난 사람들’에서 판사는 “한 사람이 죽고, 또 한 사람의 생명이 위태롭습니다.”라고 침울하게 말합니다. 젊은 용의자에 대한 증거는 압도적으로 많아 보입니다. 그러나 심의를 하면서 배심원들의 의견이 일치하지 않게 됩니다. 12명 가운데 8번 배심원 한 명이 “무죄”에 표를 던집니다. 열띤 토론 중에 그 유일한 배심원이 증언이 일치 지 않는다고 지적하자 조롱이 날아옵니다. 감정이 격앙되며 배심원들에게서 남을 해칠 수 있는 위험한 성향들이 드러납니다. 그러다가 배심원들은 하나둘씩 자신들의 의견을 무죄로 바꿉니다.

하나님은 새로운 나라 이스라엘에 율법을 주시면서 용기 있게 정직을 지키라고 하셨습니다. 하나님은 “법정에서 증언할 때 대중의 편이 되어 허위 진술을 하지 말라”(출애굽기 23:2, 현대인의 성경)고 하셨습니다. 흥미롭게도, 법원은 “가난한 자의 송사라고 해서 편벽되이 두둔하지 말며”(3절) “가난한 자의 송사라고 정의를 굽게 하지 말아야”(6절) 했습니다. 의로우신 재판장이신 하나님은 모든 송사에서 우리가 정직하기를 원하십니다.

‘12인의 성난 사람들’에서 두 번째로 무죄에 투표한 배심원은 첫 번째 배심원에 대해 “남들의 비웃음에 맞서 홀로 서는 것은 쉬운 일이 아니다.” 라고 말했습니다. 하지만 그것이 바로 하나님이 요구하시는 것입니다. 8번 배심원은 실제 증거뿐만 아니라, 재판받는 그 사람의 인간성도 보았습니다. 조용히 인도하시는 성령님을 따라 우리도 하나님의 진리 위에 서서 힘없는 자들을 대변해야 합니다.

JUROR NUMBER 8

“One man is dead. Another man’s life is at stake,” says the judge somberly in the classic 1957 film 12 Angry Men. The evidence against the young suspect appears overwhelming. But during deliberations, it’s the brokenness of the jury that’s exposed. One of the twelve—juror number 8—votes “not guilty.” A heated debate ensues, in which the lone juror is mocked as he points out discrepancies in the testimony. Emotions escalate, and the jury members’ own murderous and prejudicial tendencies come to light. One by one, the jurors switch their votes to not guilty.

When God gave His instructions to the new nation of Israel, He insisted on honest courage. “When you give testimony in a lawsuit,” God said, “do not pervert justice by siding with the crowd” (EXODUS 23:2). Interestingly, the court was neither to “show favoritism to a poor person” (V. 3) nor to “deny justice to your poor people” (V. 6). God, the righteous judge, desires our integrity in all our proceedings.

In 12 Angry Men, the second juror to vote not guilty said of the first, “It’s not easy to stand alone against the ridicule of others.” Yet that’s what God requires. Juror number 8 saw the real evidence, as well as the humanity of the individual on trial. With the gentle guidance of His Holy Spirit, we too can stand for God’s truth and speak for the powerless.

기뻐하는 사랑

브랜든과 케이티는 서로를 보고 활짝 웃었습니다. 그들의 얼굴에 나타난 순수한 기쁨을 보면 코비드-19 규제 때문에 그들의 결혼 계획이 힘들게 얼마나 많이 극적으로 바뀌어 왔는지 상상도 못할 것입니다. 스물다섯 명의 가족만이 참석했음에도 서로 사랑의 서약을 하고 그들을 지탱해 준 하나님의 사랑에 감사하는 두 사람에게서 기쁨과 평화가 뿜어져 나왔습니다.

신부와 신랑이 서로 기뻐하는 모습은 바로 이사야 선지자가 자기 백성들을 향한 하나님의 기쁨과 사랑을 묘사하기 위해 그린 그림과 같습니다. 이사야는 하나님이 약속하신 구원을 아름다운 시로 표현하면서, 하나님이 그들에게 주신 구원은 마음이 상한 자를 고치시고, 슬퍼하는 자에게 기쁨을 주며, 그의 백성들의 필요를 공급하시는(이사야 61:1-3) 것과 같이 깨어진 세상에 사는 현실을 반영하는 것임을 상기시켜 주었습니다. 하나님이 그의 백성들에게 도움을 주신 것은 마치 신랑과 신부가 서로의 사랑을 기뻐하는 것처럼 “네 하나님이 너를 기뻐하시기”(62:5) 때문입니다.

하나님이 우리를 기뻐하시고 우리와 교제하기를 원하신다는 것은 아주 놀라운 사실입니다. 우리가 깨어진 세상에 사는 것 때문에 힘들 때에도 우리에게는 우리를 사랑하시는 하나님이 계십니다. 하나님의 사랑은 마지못한 사랑이 아닌, “영원히 지속될”(시편 136:1) 기뻐하시고 끝없는 사랑입니다.

REJOICING LOVE

Brendan and Katie beamed at each other. Looking at the pure joy on their faces, you would have never guessed the difficult ways so many of their wedding plans had been dramatically altered due to COVID-19 restrictions. Even with only twenty-five family members present, joy and peace radiated from the two as they said their vows because of their love for each other and expressed their gratefulness for God’s love sustaining them.

The image of a bride and groom delighting over each other is the picture the prophet Isaiah painted to describe the type of delight and love God has for His people. In a beautifully poetic description of God’s promised deliverance, Isaiah reminded his readers that the salvation God offered them reflected the reality of living in a broken world—comfort for the brokenhearted, joy for those who mourn, and provision for the needs of His people (ISAIAH 61:1–3). God offered help to His people because, just like a bride and groom celebrate their love for each other, “so will your God rejoice over you” (62:5).

It’s a remarkable truth that God delights in us and wants a relationship with us. Even when we struggle because of the effects of living in a broken world, we have a God who loves us, not begrudgingly, but with a rejoicing, lasting love that “endures forever” (PSALM 136:1).

심한 고통 중에

오래전, 한 친구가 여러 도로가 만나는 한 교차로를 건널 때 겁이 많이 났었다는 이야기를 내게 했었습니다. “나는 한 번도 이런 걸 본 적이 없어. 그동안 배웠던 길 건너는 규칙은 아무 소용도 없었어. 나는 너무 무서워서 한쪽 구석에 서서 버스를 기다렸다가 버스 기사에게 나를 길 건너에 태워다 줄 수 있는지 물어봤어. 걸어서 가든, 나중에 차로 가든 그런 교차로를 제대로 지날 수 있으려면 시간이 많이 걸릴 거야.”

위험한 교차로가 아무리 복잡하다 해도, 복잡한 삶을 헤쳐 나가는 것이 훨씬 더 위협적일 수 있습니다. 시편 118편에서 시편 기자가 처한 특별한 상황이 어떤 것인지는 분명하지 않지만, 그것이 힘들고 반드시 기도해야 할 상황임을 알 수 있습니다. “내가 고통 중에 여호와께 부르짖었다”(5절)고 시편 기자는 외칩니다. 그리고 하나님에 대한 그의 확신은 명백했습니다. “여호와는 내 편이시라 내가 두려워하지 아니하리니... 여호와께서 내 편이 되사 나를 돕는 자들 중에 계시니”(6-7절).

WHEN HARD PRESSED

Many years ago, a friend told me how intimidated she was while trying to cross a street where several roads intersected. “I’d never seen anything like this; the rules I’d been taught for crossing the street seemed ineffective. I was so frightened that I’d stand on the corner, wait for the bus, and ask the bus driver if he’d please allow me to ride to the other side of the street. It would take a long time before I successfully learned to navigate this intersection both as a pedestrian and later as a driver.”

As complicated as a dangerous traffic intersection can be, navigating life’s complexities can be even more menacing. Although the psalmist’s specific situation in Psalm 118 is uncertain, we know it was difficult and just right for prayer: “When hard pressed, I cried to the Lord” (V. 5), the psalmist exclaimed. And his confidence in God was unmistakable: “The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid. . . . The Lord is with me; he is my helper” (VV. 6–7).

It’s not unusual to be fearful when we need to change jobs or schools or housing. Anxieties arise when health declines, relationships change, or dollars disappear. But these challenges needn’t be interpreted as abandonment by God. When hard pressed, may we find ourselves prayerfully pressing into His presence.

아브라함 링컨에 관한 책을 쓰기로 한 도리스 컨스 굿윈은 미국의 16 대 대통령에 관한 책이 이미 14,000여 권이나 된다는 사실에 자신이 없었습니다. 그 사랑받는 지도자에 대해 무슨 할 말이 더 남아 있겠습니까? 그럼에도 굿윈은 단념하지 않고 ‘경쟁자들의 팀: 아브라함 링컨의 정치적 천재성’이라는 책을 썼습니다. 링컨의 리더십 스타일에 대한 그녀의 신선한 통찰력으로 최고 평점과 최고 평가를 받는 책이 출판된 것입니다.

INFORMATION AND EVIDENCE

When Doris Kearns Goodwin decided to write a book about Abraham Lincoln, the fact that some fourteen thousand books had already been written about America’s sixteenth president intimidated her. What could be left to say about this beloved leader? Undeterred, Goodwin’s work resulted in A Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln. Her fresh insights on Lincoln’s leadership style became a top-rated and top-reviewed book.

The apostle John faced a different challenge as he wrote his account of the ministry and passion of Jesus. The final verse of John’s gospel says, “Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written” (JOHN 21:25). John had more material than he could possibly use!

So John’s strategy was to focus on only a few selected miracles (signs) that supported Jesus’ “I Am” claims throughout his account. Yet behind this strategy was this eternal purpose: “These are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (20:31). Out of the mountains of evidence, John provided plenty of reasons to believe in Jesus. Who can you tell about Him today?

받을 자격 없는 선물

얼마 전 친구에게서 선물을 받고 아주 놀랐습니다. 그렇게 좋은 선물을 받을 이유가 없었기 때문입니다. 그녀는 내가 직장에서 겪고 있는 스트레스에 대해 듣고 선물을 보냈습니다. 하지만 나 못지않게 그녀도 노부모와 까다로운 아이들, 직장에서의 큰 변화, 버거운 결혼생활 등으로 많은 스트레스를 받고 있었습니다. 그녀가 자신보다 나를 먼저 생각했다는 것이 믿어지지 않아 나는 그녀의 순수한 선물에 눈물이 났습니다.

사실 우리는 모두 결코 받을 자격이 없는 선물을 받은 사람들입니다. 바울 사도는 그것을 이렇게 표현했습니다. “그리스도 예수께서 죄인을 구원하시려고 세상에 임하셨다 하였도다 죄인 중에 내가 괴수니라”(디모데전서 1:15). 비록 그가 “전에는 비방자요 박해자요 폭행자였으나... 우리 주의 은혜가 [그에게] 넘치도록 풍성하였습니다”(13-14절). 부활하신 예수님은 바울이 값없이 주시는 은혜의 선물을 깊이 이해할 수 있게 하셨습니다. 그 결과 바울은 자격이 없는 자로서 그 선물을 받는다는 것이 무엇을 의미하는지를 알았고, 하나님의 사랑의 강력한 도구가 되어 하나님이 그를 위해 하신 일을 많은 사람들에게 전했습니다.

우리가 정죄 대신에 사랑을 받고 심판 대신에 긍휼을 받는 것은 오직 하나님의 은혜를 통해서입니다. 오늘 자격 없이 받은 하나님의 은혜를 찬양하고 그 은혜를 다른 사람들에게 보여줄 방법들을 찾아보도록 합시다.

AN UNDESERVED GIFT

When my friend gave me a gift recently, I was surprised. I didn’t think I deserved such a nice present from her. She’d sent it after hearing about some work stress I was experiencing. Yet she was going through just as much stress, if not more, than I was, with an aging parent, challenging children, upheaval at work, and strain on her marriage. I couldn’t believe she had thought of me before herself, and her simple gift brought me to tears.

In truth, we’re all recipients of a gift that we could never deserve. Paul put it this way: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst” (1 TIMOTHY 1:15). Although he “was once a blasphemer and persecutor and a violent man, . . . the grace of our Lord was poured out on [him] abundantly” (VV. 13–14). The risen Jesus gave Paul a deep understanding of the free gift of grace. As a result, he learned what it meant to be an undeserving recipient of that gift and he became a powerful instrument of God’s love and told many people about what God had done for him.

It’s only through God’s grace that we receive love instead of condemnation, and mercy instead of judgment. Today, let’s celebrate the undeserved grace that God has given and be on the lookout for ways to demonstrate that grace to others.

하나님 안에 거하라

어느 이른 저녁 동네 공사장 근처에서 조깅하고 있는데 마르고 초췌한 아기 고양이 한 마리가 애처롭게 야옹거리며 집까지 따라왔습니다. 현재 미키는 건강하고 잘생긴 고양이로 자라서 우리 집에서 가족들의 많은 사랑을 받으며 편안히 지내고 있습니다. 미키를 발견한 길을 조깅할 때마다 나는 종종 마음속으로 ‘하나님, 감사합니다. 길거리에서 살던 미키가 이제 집이 생겼습니다.’라고 생각합니다.

시편 91편은 “지존자의 은밀한 곳에 거주하는”(1절), 하나님과 함께 사는 자들에 대해 말합니다. 여기서 “거주하다”라는 히브리어 단어는 “머무르다, 영원히 거하다”라는 의미를 갖고 있습니다. 우리가 하나님 안에 머무를 때 하나님의 지혜에 따라 살고 무엇보다도 하나님을 사랑하며 살도록 도와주십니다 (14절; 요한복음 15:10). 하나님은 세상의 고난 가운데 있는 우리에게 하나님이 함께하심으로 오는 안전뿐만 아니라 영원히 우리와 함께하신다는 위안을 약속하십니다. 어려움이 닥쳐와도 우리는 하나님의 주권과 지혜와 사랑, 그리고 우리를 보호하고 구원해 주신다는 하나님의 약속 안에서 평안히 쉴 수 있습니다.

하나님을 피난처로 삼을 때 우리는 “전능자의 그늘 아래”(시편 91:1) 살게 됩니다. 하나님의 영원한 지혜와 사랑이 허락하지 않는 한 어떤 어려움도 우리를 건드리지 못합니다. 하나님 안에 거하면 우리는 안전합니다.

COME HOME TO GOD

One early evening while I was jogging near a construction site in our neighborhood, a skinny, dirty kitten meowed at me plaintively and followed me home. Today, Mickey is a healthy, handsome adult cat, enjoying a comfortable life in our household and deeply loved by my family. Whenever I jog on the road where I found him, I often think, Thank You, God. Mickey was spared from living on the streets. He has a home now.

Psalm 91 speaks of those who “[dwell] in the shelter of the Most High” (V. 1), making their home with God. The Hebrew word for dwells here means “to remain, to stay permanently.” As we remain in Him, He helps us live according to His wisdom and to love Him above all (V. 14; JOHN 15:10). God promises us the comfort of being with Him for eternity, as well as the security of His being with us through earthly hardship. Although trouble may come, we can rest in His sovereignty, wisdom, and love, and in His promises to protect and deliver us.

When we make God our refuge, we live “in the shadow of the Almighty” (PSALM 91:1). No trouble can touch us except that which His infinite wisdom and love allow. This is the safety of God as our home.

예수님을 보라

레오는 4개월이 될 때까지 부모의 얼굴을 보지 못했습니다. 선천적 희귀 질환으로 시력이 흐릿했던 레오는 마치 짙은 안개 속에 사는 것과 같았습니다. 그러다 레오의 안과의사가 특수한 안경을 맞춰 주었습니다.

레오의 아버지는 레오에게 새 안경을 처음 씌워 주는 어머니의 영상을 인터넷에 올렸습니다. 우리는 레오의 눈이 서서히 초점을 맞추는 것을 보았습니다. 엄마를 처음 보게 된 레오의 얼굴에 미소가 가득 피어올랐습니다. 정말 귀한 장면이었습니다. 바로 그 순간, 어린 레오는 주위를 분명하게 볼 수 있었습니다.

요한은 예수님과 제자들 사이에 있었던 대화를 전해줍니다. 빌립은 주님에게 “아버지를 우리에게 보여 주옵소서”(요한복음 14:8)라고 요청했습니다. 예수님의 제자들은 그렇게 많은 시간을 함께 보내고서도 그들 앞에 있는 분이 누구신지를 알지 못했습니다. 예수님은 “내가 아버지 안에 거하고 아버지는 내 안에 계신 것을 네가 믿지 아니하느냐”(10절)고 대답하셨습니다. 조금 전에 예수님은 “내가 곧 길이요 진리요 생명”(6절)이라고 말씀하셨습니다. 그것은 예수님이 “나는...” 이라고 일곱 번 말씀하신 것 중 여섯 번째 말씀입니다. 예수님은 우리에게 이 “나는...” 이라는 안경을 쓰고 봄으로써 주님이 진정 하나님이심을 보라고 말씀합니다.

우리는 제자들과 아주 비슷합니다. 어려운 시기에는 힘겨워하며 앞을 잘 못 보고, 하나님께서 하신 일들과 하실 수 있는 일들에 집중하지 못합니다. 어린 레오가 특수 안경을 썼을 때 부모를 분명히 볼 수 있었던 것처럼, 어쩌면 우리도 예수님이 실제로 누구이신지 분명히 볼 수 있는 ‘하나님의 안경’이 필요한 지도 모르겠습니다.

SEEING JESUS

At four months old, Leo had never seen his parents. He’d been born with a rare condition that left his vision blurred. For him, it was like living in dense fog. But then eye doctors fit him with a special set of glasses.

Leo’s father posted the video of Mom placing the new glasses over his eyes for the first time. We watch as Leo’s eyes slowly focus. A smile spreads wide across his face as he truly sees his mom for the first time. Priceless. In that moment, little Leo could see clearly.

John reports a conversation Jesus had with His disciples. Philip asked Him, “Show us the Father” (JOHN 14:8). Even after all this time together, Jesus’ disciples couldn’t recognize who was right in front of them. He replied, “Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me?” (V. 10). Earlier Jesus had said, “I am the way and the truth and the life” (V. 6). This is the sixth of Jesus’ seven “I am” statements. He’s telling us to look through these “I am” lenses and see who He truly is—God Himself.

We’re a lot like the disciples. In difficult times, we struggle and develop blurred vision. We fail to focus on what God has done and can do. When little Leo put on the special glasses, he could see his parents clearly. Perhaps we need to put on our God-glasses so we can clearly see who Jesus really is.

하나님의 품은 열려 있다

나는 핸드폰을 보며 얼굴을 찡그리고 한숨을 쉬었습니다. 이마에는 걱정으로 주름이 잡혔습니다. 자녀 문제로 친구와 심한 의견 충돌이 있은 후, 친구에게 전화를 걸어 사과해야 한다는 생각이 들었습니다. 견해 차이가 여전히 있어서 사과하고 싶지는 않았지만, 그 문제로 논쟁할 때 나의 태도가 온유하거나 겸손하지 않았다는 것을 알고 있었습니다.

전화를 걸기 전에 나는 ‘만약 친구가 나를 용서하지 않으면 어쩌지? 친구 관계가 계속 유지될 수 있을까?’ 하는 걱정이 들었습니다. 바로 그때 한 노래 가사가 떠오르며 하나님 앞에서 나의 죄를 고백하던 때를 회상하게 되었습니다. 하나님이 나를 용서하시고 죄책감에서 풀어주셨다는 것을 알고 나니 마음이 놓였습니다.

인간관계의 문제를 풀려고 할 때 사람들의 반응을 마음대로 조절할 수는 없습니다. 우리가 할 수 있는 부분을 하고 겸손히 용서를 구하며 고쳐야 할 것은 고치면서 치유는 하나님께 맡기면 됩니다. 해결되지 못한 “인간관계의 문제” 로 고통을 견뎌야만 하는 상황에서도 주님과의 평화는 언제나 가능합니다. 하나님의 품은 열려 있고, 하나님은 우리에게 필요한 은혜와 자비를 주시기 위해 기다리고 계십니다. “만일 우리가 우리 죄를 자백하면 그는 미쁘시고 의로우사 우리 죄를 사하시며 우리를 모든 불의에서 깨끗하게 하실 것이요”(요한1서 1:9).

GOD’S ARMS ARE OPEN

I frowned at my cellphone and sighed. Worry wrinkled my brow. A friend and I had had a serious disagreement over an issue with our children, and I knew I needed to call her and apologize. I didn’t want to do it because our viewpoints were still in conflict, yet I knew I hadn’t been kind or humble the last time we discussed the matter.

Anticipating the phone call, I wondered, What if she doesn’t forgive me? What if she doesn’t want to continue our friendship? Just then, lyrics to a song came to mind and took me back to the moment when I confessed my sin in the situation to God. I felt relief because I knew God had forgiven me and released me from guilt.

We can’t control how people will respond to us when we try to work out relational problems. As long as we own up to our part, humbly ask for forgiveness, and make any changes needed, we can let God handle the healing. Even if we have to endure the pain of unresolved “people problems,” peace with Him is always possible. God’s arms are open, and He is waiting to show us the grace and mercy we need. “If we confess our sin, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 JOHN 1:9).

선한 목자

워렌 목사는 한 교인이 아내와 가족을 버렸다는 소식을 듣고 그 남자를 우연처럼 만나 대화를 나눌 수 있게 해달라고 하나님께 기도했습니다. 그런데 정말로 그런 일이 일어났습니다! 워렌 목사가 어느 식당에 들어갔는데 그 남자가 가까운 자리에 앉아있었던 것입니다. 그는 “배고픈 한 사람 더 앉아도 될까요?”라고 묻고는, 얼마 안 있어 서로 깊은 대화를 나누며 함께 기도했습니다.

하나님이 에스겔 선지자를 통해 그의 양떼를 돌보겠다고 말씀하신 것처럼, 목사로서 워렌은 교회 공동체를 위해 목자의 역할을 한 것입니다. 하나님은 그의 흩어진 양떼를 돌보고 구원하시며 함께 모을 것이라고 약속하셨습니다 (에스겔 34:12-13). 하나님은 “좋은 꼴을 먹이고... 잃어버린 자를 찾으며 쫓기는 자를 돌아오게 하며” “상한 자를 싸매 주며 병든 자를 강하게” 하실 것입니다 (14-16절). 자신의 백성들을 향한 하나님의 사랑은 이런 모습으로 울려 퍼질 것입니다. 에스겔의 말은 하나님이 앞으로 행하실 일들을 예측하게 하지만, 또한 언젠가 예수님 안에서 자신을 드러내실 목자 하나님의 영원한 마음을 나타내고 있기도 합니다.

우리의 상황이 어떻든 하나님은 우리 한 사람 한 사람을 찾아오셔서 구원하시고 푸른 초장으로 인도해 주십니다. 하나님은 우리가 자기 양떼를 위해 생명을 내려놓은 그 선한 목자를 따르기를 원하십니다(요한복음 10:14-15 참조).

THE GOOD SHEPHERD

When Pastor Warren heard that a man in his church had deserted his wife and family, he asked God to help him meet the man as if by accident so they could chat. And He did! When Warren walked into a restaurant, he spotted the gentleman in a nearby booth. “Got some room for another hungry man?” he asked, and soon they were sharing deeply and praying together.

As a pastor, Warren was acting as a shepherd for those in his church community, even as God through the prophet Ezekiel said He would tend His flock. God promised to look after His scattered sheep, rescuing them and gathering them together (EZEKIEL 34:12–13). He would “tend them in a good pasture” and “search for the lost and bring back the strays”; He would “bind up the injured and strengthen the weak” (VV. 14–16). God’s love for His people reverberates through each of these images. Though Ezekiel’s words anticipate God’s future actions, they reflect the eternal heart of the God and Shepherd who would one day reveal Himself in Jesus.

No matter our situation, God reaches out to each of us, seeking to rescue us and sheltering us in a rich pasture. He longs for us to follow the Good Shepherd, He who lays down His life for His sheep (SEE JOHN 10:14–15).
