평생 친구

영국 시인 윌리엄 쿠퍼(1731-1800)는 전에 노예 상인이었다가 목사가 된 존 뉴턴(1725-1807)과 친구가 되었습니다. 우울증과 불안에 시달리던 쿠퍼는 자살을 한 번 이상 시도했습니다. 뉴턴이 그를 방문할 때면 그들은 함께 긴 산책을 하며 하나님에 대해 이야기하곤 했습니다. 쿠퍼가 그의 창의성을 살려 목표를 가지고 시를 쓰면 큰 도움이 될 것이라고 생각한 뉴턴 목사는 찬송가 모음집을 만들 생각을 했습니다. 쿠퍼는 “주 하나님 크신 능력(통일찬송가 80장)”을 비롯한 많은 곡의 가사를 썼습니다. 뉴턴은 다른 교회로 부임한 후에도 쿠퍼와 계속 가까운 친구로 지내며 쿠퍼의 남은 생애 동안 정기적으로 편지를 주고받았습니다.

FRIENDS FOR LIFE

William Cowper (1731–1800), the English poet, found a friend in his pastor, John Newton (1725–1807), the former slave trader. Cowper suffered from depression and anxiety, attempting to die by suicide more than once. When Newton visited him, they’d go on long walks together and talk about God. Thinking that Cowper would benefit from engaging creatively and having a reason to write his poetry, the minister had the idea to compile a hymnal. Cowper contributed many songs, including “God Moves in a Mysterious Way.” When Newton moved to another church, he and Cowper remained strong friends and corresponded regularly for the rest of Cowper’s life.

I see parallels between the strong friendship of Cowper and Newton with that of David and Jonathan in the Old Testament. After David defeated Goliath, “Jonathan became one in spirit with David,” loving him as himself (1 SAMUEL 18:1). Although Jonathan was the son of King Saul, he defended David against the king’s jealousy and anger, asking his father why David should be put to death. In response, “Saul hurled his spear at him to kill him” (20:33). Jonathan dodged the weapon and was grieved at this shameful treatment of his friend (V. 34).

For both sets of friends, their bond was life-giving as they spurred each other on to serve and love God. How might you similarly encourage a friend today? - AMY BOUCHER PYE

윌리엄 샤트너는 TV 시리즈 ‘스타트렉’에서 커크 선장 역할을 했지만 진짜로 우주여행을 하게 될 줄은 몰랐습니다. 그는 11분 동안의 준궤도 비행을 하고 나서 “내가 상상할 수 있는 가장 심오한 경험이었다”고 회상했습니다. 로켓에서 걸어 나온 그는 놀라웠던 광경을 이렇게 말했습니다. “푸른색을 옆으로 지나가니까 이번에는 검은색이 나타나는데 그게 바로 놀라운 장면입니다. 아래를 내려다보면 푸른색이 펼쳐지고 위를 보면 깜깜합니다. 너무나 아름다웠지만 층이 얇아서 순식간에 지나가 버렸습니다.”

IN HIS HANDS

William Shatner played Captain Kirk on the television series Star Trek, but he was unprepared for a real trip into space. He called his eleven-minute sub-orbital flight “the most profound experience I can i magine.” He stepped out of his rocket and marveled, “To see the blue color go right by you and now you’re staring into blackness, that’s the thing.” You “look down and there’s the blue down there and the black up there.” He added, “The beauty of that color and it’s so thin and you’re through it in an instant.”

Our planet is a blue dot surrounded by utter darkness. It’s unsettling. Shatner said that flying from blue sky into blackness was like flying into death. “In an instant, you go, ‘Whoa, that’s death!’ That’s what I saw. It was so moving to me. This experience, it’s something unbelievable.”

Shatner’s shattering flight puts life in perspective. We’re small objects in the universe, yet we’re loved by the One who created light and separated it from the darkness (GENESIS 1:3–4). Our Father knows where the darkness resides and the path to its dwelling (JOB 38:19–20). He “laid the earth’s foundation . . . while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy” (VV. 4–7).

아르헨티나 작가 호르헤 루이스 보르헤스가 쓴 한 단편 소설은 “인간을 죽음에서 벗어나게 하는 비밀의 강물”을 마신 로마 군인 마르쿠스 루푸스에 대해 이야기합니다. 마르쿠스는 불멸이라는 것이 그가 생각했던 것과 전혀 다르다는 것, 곧 끝없이 살기만 하는 것은 의미가 없는 삶이라는 것을 깨닫습니다. 사실 삶에 의미를 부여하는 것은 바로 죽음입니다. 그래서 마르쿠스는 해독제인 맑은 샘물을 찾습니다. 그것을 마시고 가시로 손을 긁자 죽을 수 있는 몸으로 다시 돌아왔다는 표시로 피 한 방울이 나옵니다.

THE MEANING OF LIFE

A short story by Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges tells of a Roman soldier, Marcus Rufus, who drinks from a “secret river that purifies men of death.” In time, though, Marcus realizes immortality wasn’t all it was cracked up to be: life without limits was life without significance. In fact, it is death itself that gives meaning to life. Marcus finds an antidote—a spring of clear water. After drinking from it, he scratches his hand on a thorn, and a drop of blood forms, signifying his restored mortality.

Like Marcus, we too sometimes despair over the decline of life and the prospect of death (PSALM 88:3). We agree that death gives significance to life. But this is where the stories diverge. Unlike Marcus, we know it’s in Christ’s death that we find the true meaning of our lives. With the shedding of His blood on the cross, Christ conquered death, swallowing it up in victory (1 CORINTHIANS 15:54). For us, the antidote is in the “living water” of Jesus Christ (JOHN 4:10). Because we drink that, all the rules of life, death, and life immortal have changed (1 CORINTHIANS 15:52).

It’s true, we won’t escape physical death, but that isn’t the point. Jesus upends all our despair about life and death (HEBREWS 2:11–15). In Christ, we’re reassured with the hope of heaven and of meaning-

내게 들린 종소리

헨리 워즈워스 롱펠로가 1863년에 쓴 시를 바탕으로 한 “나는 크리스마스에 종소리를 들었네”라는 노래는 보통 성탄절 노래와는 정말로 다릅니다. 흔히들 예상하는 크리스마스의 기쁨과 웃음소리가 아닌 슬픔을 담고 있는 가사는 이렇게 외칩니다. “나는 절망으로 고개 숙여 / 땅 위에 평화는 없다고 말했네 / 땅에는 평화를, 사람들에게는 선하심을 노래해도 / 넘치는 증오가 내 노래를 조롱하네.” 그러나 이 슬픔의 노래는 희망으로 향하며 우리에게 확신을 줍니다. “하나님은 죽지도, 잠들지도 않으시네 / 악은 망하고 선은 승리하리니 / 땅 위에 평화와 사람들을 향한 선하심으로.”

I HEARD THE BELLS

“I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day,” based on an 1863 poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, is a truly unusual Christmas song. Instead of the expected Christmas joy and mirth, the lyric forms a lament, crying out, “And in despair I bowed my head / There is no peace on earth I said / For hate is strong and mocks the song / Of peace on earth, good will to men.” This lament, however, moves forward into hope, reassuring us that “God is not dead, nor does he sleep / The wrong shall fail, the right prevail / With peace on earth goodwill toward men.”

The pattern of hope rising out of lament is also found in the lament psalms of the Bible. As such, Psalm 43 begins with the psalmist crying out about his enemies who attack him (V. 1) and his God who seems to have forgotten him (V. 2). But the singer doesn’t stay in lament—he looks up to the God he doesn’t fully understand but still trusts, singing, “Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God” (V. 5).

Life is filled with reasons for lament, and we all experience them on a regular basis. But, if we allow that lament to point us to the God of hope, we can sing joyfully—even if we sing through our tears. - BILL CROWDER

선한 것을 굳게 잡으라

공터 근처에 주차를 하고 가로질러 집으로 갈 때마다 거의 매번 도꼬마리 (국화과의 들풀)들이 옷에 달라붙습니다. 특히 가을에는 더합니다. 이 작은 “무임승차” 손님들은 옷이나 신발이나 지나가는 것 어디에나 달라붙어 다음 목적지로 이동합니다. 이것이 도꼬마리 씨앗을 우리 동네와 전 세계에 퍼뜨리는 자연의 방식입니다.

달라붙은 도꼬마리를 조심스럽게 떼어내다 보면 예수님을 믿는 자들에게 “선한 것을 굳게 잡으라”(로마서 12:9, 새번역)고 충고한 말씀이 종종 생각납니다. 다른 사람들을 사랑하려다 보면 어려운 일도 있습니다. 그러나 우리가 온 힘을 다해 선에 속하도록 성령이 도와주실 때, 성령의 인도하심으로 악을 물리치고 “거짓이 없는” 사랑을 할 수 있습니다(9절).

도꼬마리 씨앗은 그저 손으로 한번 털어서는 떨어지지 않고, 계속 매달려 있습니다. 선한 것에 초점을 맞추고 하나님의 자비와 긍휼과 계명에 우리의 마음을 둘 때, 우리도 하나님의 능력으로 사랑하는 사람들에게 꼭 붙어있을

CLINGING TO WHAT’S GOOD

When we park our car near an open field and walk across it to get to our house, we almost always get some sticky cockleburs on our clothes—especially in the fall. These tiny “hitchhikers” attach to clothing, shoes, or whatever is passing by and ride to their next destination. It’s nature’s way of spreading cocklebur seeds in my local field and around the world.

As I try to carefully remove clinging cockleburs, I’ve often thought about the message that admonishes believers in Jesus to “cling to what is good” (ROMANS 12:9). When we’re trying to love others, it can be challenging. However, as the Holy Spirit helps us hold on to what’s good with all we have, we can repel evil and be “sincere” in our love as He guides us (V. 9).

Cocklebur seeds don’t fall off with a mere brush of the hand, they hang on to you. And when we focus on what’s good, keep- ing our mind on God’s mercy, compassion, and commands, we too—in His strength—can hang on tightly to those we love. He helps us stay “devoted to one another in love,” remembering to place other’s needs before our own (V. 10).

Yes, those cockleburs can be challenging, but they also remind me to cling to others in love and by God’s power to grip tightly “what is good” (V. 9; SEE ALSO PHILIPPIANS 4:8–9). - KATARA PATTON

피난처로 달려감

6학년 농구 경기가 순조롭게 진행되고 있었습니다. 부모들과 조부모들은 선수들을 응원하고 있었고 선수들의 어린 동생들은 학교 복도에서 즐겁게 놀고 있었습니다. 갑자기 사이렌이 울리고 체육관에 경보등이 번쩍였습니다. 화재경보기가 작동된 것입니다. 그러자 어린 동생들은 겁에 질려 부모들을 찾아 체육관으로 몰려들어 왔습니다.

불이 난 것이 아니고 화재경보기가 잘못 울렸던 것입니다. 그러나 이 과정에서 위기를 느낀 아이들이 부끄럼도 잊은 채 자기 부모의 품으로 달려가는 모습이 매우 인상적이었습니다. 두려울 때에 안전하고 안심할 수 있는 사람들을
믿고 찾는 생생한 모습이었으니까요!

성경은 다윗이 큰 두려움에 처했던 일을 기록합니다. 사울과 많은 적들이 그를 추격했습니다(사무엘하 22:1). 자기를 안전한 곳으로 인도하신 하나님께 감사하였던 다윗은 그 도우심을 찬양하는 아름다운 노래를 불렀습니다. 그는 하나님을 “나의 반석이시요 나의 요새시요 나를 위하여 나를 건지시는 자”라고 불렀습니다(2절). “스올의 줄”과 “사망의 올무”(6절) 가 따라다니며 괴롭힐 때, 다윗이 하나님께 “아뢰었더니” 그의 “부르짖음이 [하나님의] 귀에 들렸습니다”(7절). 마침내 다윗은 하나님께서 “자신을 구해주셨다”고 선포했습니다(18, 20, 49절).

RUNNING TO OUR SHELTER

The sixth-grade basketball game was well underway. Parents and grandparents were cheering on their players, while younger brothers and sisters of the boys on the teams entertained themselves out in the school hallway. Suddenly, sirens blared and lights flashed in the gym. A fire alarm had been tripped. Soon the siblings came streaming back into the gym in panic, looking for their parents.

There was no fire; the alarm had accidentally been activated. But as I watched, I was struck by the way the children—sensing a crisis—unashamedly ran to embrace their parents. What a picture of confidence in those who could provide a sense of safety and reassurance in a time of fear!

Scripture presents a time when David experienced great fear. Saul and numerous other enemies (2 SAMUEL 22:1) pursued him. After God delivered David to safety, the grateful man sang an eloquent song of praise about His help. He called God “my rock, my fortress and my deliverer” (V. 2). When the “cords of the grave” and “the snares of death” (V. 6) hounded him, David “called out” to God and his “cry came to [God’s] ears” (V. 7). In the end, David proclaimed He “rescued me” (VV. 18, 20, 49).

In times of fear and uncertainty, we can run to the “Rock” (V. 32). As we call on God’s name, He alone provides the refuge and shelter we need (VV. 2–3). - DAVE BRANON

짐을 가볍게

새로 시작한 성경공부 모임에 나오는 여성들에게 어려운 일들이 계속 생기면서 우리는 뜻하지 않게 매우 개인적인 이야기들을 나누게 되었습니다. 아버지를 잃은 슬픔, 이혼하고서 맞는 결혼기념일의 아픔, 청각장애를 가지고 태어난 아기, 아이를 데리고 응급실로 달려갔던 이야기 등, 누구나 혼자서는 감당키 어려운 일들이었습니다. 각자의 연약한 모습들은 우리를 더욱 솔직하게 만들어 주었습니다. 함께 울며 기도하다 보니 모르는 사람들과 시작한 모임이 몇 주 만에 가까운 친구들의 모임이 되었습니다.

예수님을 믿는 사람들은 교회의 지체로서 고통을 겪는 사람들에게 친밀하게 개인적으로 다가갈 수 있습니다. 그리스도 안에서 형제자매 된 우리의 관계는 얼마나 오래 사귀었는지, 얼마나 공통점이 있는지와 상관이 없습니다. 그보다는 바울이 말한 대로 우리가 “서로 짐을 지는가” 하는 것입니다(갈라디아서 6:2). 하나님의 능력에 의지하여 우리는 듣고 공감하고 할 수 있는 한 도우며 기도합니다. 우리는 “모든 사람에게, 특히 믿는 자들에게 선을 행하는”(10절) 방법을 찾을 수 있습니다. 바울은 우리가 그렇게 할 때 그리스도의 법(2절), 곧 하나님을 사랑하고 이웃을 내 몸과 같이 사랑하는 것을 이루는 것이라고 말합니다. 삶의 짐은 무거울 수 있지만 하나님은 그 짐을 가볍게 하기 위해 우리에게 교회 가족을 주셨습니다.

LIGHTEN THE LOAD

When the women in our newly formed Bible study faced a series of tragedies, we suddenly found ourselves sharing deeply personal experiences. Facing the loss of a father, the pain of a wedding anniversary after divorce, the birth of a child who was completely deaf, the experience of racing to bring a child to the emergency room—it was too much for anyone to carry alone. Each person’s vulnerability led to more
transparency. We cried and prayed together, and what started as a group of strangers became a group of close friends in a matter of weeks.

As part of the church body, believers in Jesus are able to come alongside people in their suffering in a deep and personal way. The relational ties that bind together brothers and sisters in Christ aren’t dependent on the length of time we’ve known each other or the things we have in common. Instead, we do what Paul calls “[carrying] each other’s burdens” (GALATIANS 6:2). Relying on God’s strength, we listen, we empathize, we help where we can, and we pray. We can look for ways to “do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers” (V. 10). Paul says that when we do so, we fulfill the law of Christ (V. 2): to love God and love our neighbor as ourselves. The burdens of life can be heavy, but He’s given us our church family to lighten the load. - KAREN PIMPO

패스트푸드를 통한 격려

마리아는 패스트푸드 점심을 사들고 빈 테이블로 갔습니다. 버거를 한입 베어 물었는데 몇 테이블 떨어진 곳에 앉아 있는 젊은 남자와 눈이 마주쳤습니다. 그의 옷은 흙이 묻어 더러웠고 머리는 축 늘어져 있었고 빈 종이컵을 꼭 쥐고 있었습니다. 그는 분명 배고파 보였습니다. 어떻게 도울 수 있을까요? 돈을 주는 것은 지혜롭지 않은 것 같았습니다. 음식을 사서 주는 것도 그 사람이 당황해할 것 같았습니다.

바로 그때 마리아는 부유한 지주 보아스가 가난한 이민자 과부를 초청하여 밭에서 이삭을 줍게 했던 룻기의 이야기가 생각났습니다. 그는 하인들에게 명했습니다. “그에게 곡식 단 사이에서 줍게 하고 책망하지 말며 또 그를 위하여 곡식 다발에서 조금씩 뽑아 버려서 그에게 줍게 하고 꾸짖지 말라” (룻기 2:15-16). 여성이 살아가려면 남성에게 전적으로 의존해야 하는 문화에서 보아스는 하나님이 사랑으로 공급하는 그런 모습을 보여주었습니다. 결국
보아스는 룻과 결혼하여 그녀를 어려운 형편으로부터 구해주었습니다(4:9-10).

마리아는 자리에서 일어나 손대지 않은 감자튀김 한 봉지를 근처 테이블에 놓으면서 그 남자와 눈을 마주쳤습니다. 그가 배고프다면 그녀의 “패스트푸드 밭”에서 주울 수 있게 한 것입니다. 이렇게 사람들을 격려하는 창의적인 방법들을 보여주는 성경의 이야기들 속에서 우리는 하나님의 마음을 알게 됩니다.

FAST-FOOD ENCOURAGEMENT

Maria carried her fast-food lunch to an empty table. As she bit into her burger, her eyes locked on those of a young man seated several tables away. His clothes were soiled, his hair hung limply, and he clutched at an empty paper cup. Clearly, he was hungry. How could she help? A gift of cash seemed unwise. If she bought a meal and presented it to him, might he be embarrassed?

Just then Maria remembered the story of Ruth where Boaz, a wealthy landowner, invited the impoverished immigrant widow to glean from his fields. He ordered his men: “Let her gather among the sheaves and don’t reprimand her. Even pull out some stalks for her from the bundles and leave them for her to pick up, and don’t rebuke her” (RUTH 2:15–16). In a culture where women were utterly dependent on their connection to men for survival, Boaz demonstrated God’s loving provision. Eventually, Boaz married Ruth, redeeming her from her serious need (4:9–10).

As Maria rose to leave, she placed her untouched packet of fries on a nearby table, meeting the man’s eyes as she did so. If he was hungry, he might glean from her “fast-food field.” God’s heart is revealed in the stories of Scripture as they illustrate creative solutions to encourage. - ELISA MORGAN

반드시 찾아내시는 하나님

몇년 전 어느 날, 한 남자가 나보다 한 블록 앞서 걸어가고 있었는데 그의 두 팔에 짐이 가득했습니다. 그런데 그 사람이 갑자기 걸려 넘어지며 물건들을 다 떨어뜨렸습니다. 두 사람이 그를 부축해 일으켜주며 떨어진 물건을 줍는 것을 도와주었습니다. 하지만 미처 지갑을 챙기지 못했습니다. 나는 그의 귀중한 지갑을 주워서 돌려주려고 알지도 못하는 그 사람을 열심히 따라갔습니다. “선생님, 선생님!” 하고 부르며 따라가니 그가 알아차리고 돌아섰습니다. 지갑을 내미는 순간 놀라며 안도하고 크게 감사하던 그의 표정을 나는 결코 잊지 못합니다.

그 사람을 그저 뒤따라 걸어감으로써 시작된 일이 전혀 다른 어떤 것으로 바뀐 것입니다. 잘 알고 있는 시편 23편의 마지막 구절, “내 평생에 선하심과 인자하심이 반드시 나를 따르리니”(6절)에서 대부분의 영어 번역은 따른다는
뜻으로 ‘follow’란 단어를 사용하고 있습니다. “Follow”란 단어가 맞는 번역이긴 하지만 실제로 사용된 히브리어 단어는 더 강하고 공격적입니다. 이 단어는 마치 포식자가 먹이를 쫓는 것처럼 (양을 쫓는 늑대를 생각해 보십시오)
문자 그대로 “추격하다 또는 뒤쫓다”를 의미합니다.

하나님의 선하심과 사랑은 그저 서두르지 않고 여유롭게 우리를 따라오는 것이 아닙니다. 그와는 아주 달리, 목적을 가지고 “반드시” 우리를 추격하고 뒤쫓아옵니다. 지갑을 돌려주려고 그 남자를 뒤쫓아갔던 것과 마찬가지로,
선한 목자이신 하나님도 영원한 사랑으로 우리를 뒤쫓아오십니다(1, 6절).

GOD’S SURE PURSUIT

Some years ago, a man walked about a block ahead of me. I could clearly see that his arms were full of packages. All of a sudden, he tripped, dropping everything. A couple of people helped him to his feet, assisting him in collecting what he’d dropped. But they missed something—his wallet. I picked it up and took off in hot pursuit of the stranger, hoping to return that important item. I yelled “Sir, sir!” and finally got his attention. He turned just as I reached him. As I held out the wallet, I’ll never forget his look of surprised relief and immense gratitude.

What began as following after that man turned into something quite different. Most English translations use the word follow in the final verse of the familiar Psalm 23—“Surely your goodness and love will follow me” (V. 6). And while “follow” fits, the actual Hebrew word used is more forceful, aggressive even. The word literally means “to pursue or chase,” much like a predator pursues his prey (think of a wolf pursuing sheep).

God’s goodness and love don’t merely follow along after us at a casual pace, in no real hurry. No, “surely” we are being pursued—chased even—with intention. Much like pursuing a man to return his wallet, we’re pursued by the Good Shepherd who loves us with an everlasting love (VV. 1, 6). - JOHN BLASE

큰 기대

성탄절을 앞둔 어느 바쁜 날, 한 연로한 여성이 사람들로 붐비는 동네 우체국의 접수창구를 향해 걸어오고 있었습니다. 느릿느릿 다가오는 모습을 지켜보며 기다리던 우체국 직원이 “안녕하세요, 아가씨!”하며 인사를 건넸습니다. 그 직원의 인사말은 다정했지만, 어떤 사람들에게 그 말은 “젊을수록” 좋은 것이라는 뜻으로 들릴 수도 있습니다.

성경은 나이가 많아도 여전히 희망을 품을 수 있다는 것을 우리에게 보여줍니다. 요셉과 마리아가 아기 예수를 성전으로 데려가서 봉헌할 때 (누가복음 2:23; 출애굽기 13:2, 12 참조), 믿음을 지키던 나이 지긋한 두 사람이
갑자기 무대 중앙에 등장합니다.

먼저, 메시아를 보기 위해 오래도록 기다려온 시므온이 “[예수]를 안고 하나님을 찬송”하며 말했습니다. “주재여 이제는 말씀하신 대로 종을 평안히 놓아 주시는도다 내 눈이 주의 구원을 보았사오니 이는 만민 앞에 예비하신 것이요”(누가복음 2:28-31).

그리고 나서, 나이가 “매우 많은” 선지자 안나(36절)가 시므온이 마리아와 요셉과 이야기하고 있을 때 다가왔습니다. 결혼한 지 7년 만에 과부가 되어 84 세가 될 때까지 성전에서 살고 있었던 안나는 “주야로 금식하며 기도함으로 섬기면서” 절대 그곳을 떠나지 않았습니다. 그녀는 아기 예수를 보자 하나님을 찬양하며, “예루살렘의 속량을 바라는 모든 사람에게 그 아이”에 대하여 말하기 시작했습니다(37-38절).

소망을 간직하고 있었던 이 두 사람의 하나님의 종들을 통해 우리도 나이와 상관없이 큰 기대를 가지고 하나님을 끝까지 기다려야 하는 것을 깨닫게 됩니다.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS

On a busy day before Christmas, an aged woman approached the mail counter at my crowded neighborhood post office. Watching her slow pace, the patient postal clerk greeted her, “Well hello, young lady!” His words were friendly, but some might hear them saying that “younger” is better.

The Bible inspires us to see that advanced age can motivate our hope. As the infant Jesus is brought to the temple by Joseph and Mary, to be consecrated (LUKE 2:23; SEE EXODUS 13:2, 12), two elderly believers suddenly take center stage.

First, Simeon—who’d been waiting for years to see the Messiah—“took [Jesus] in his arms and praised God, saying: ‘Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all nations’ ” (LUKE 2:28–31).

Then Anna, a “very old” prophet (V. 36), came along just as Simeon was talking with Mary and Joseph. A widow who’d been married only seven years, she’d lived in the temple to age eighty-four. Never leaving, she “worshiped night and day, fasting and praying.” When she saw Jesus, she began praising God, explaining about “the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem” (VV. 37–38).

These two hopeful servants remind us to never stop waiting on God—no matter our age—with great expectations. - PATRICIA RAYBON
