가장 외로운 사람

1969년 7월 20일, 닐 암스트롱과 버즈 올드린은 달 착륙선에서 나와 인류 최초로 달 표면을 걸었습니다. 그런데 우리는 탐사 팀의 세 번째 사람, 즉 ‘아폴로 11호’ 탐사선을 조종하고 있었던 마이클 콜린스를 곧잘 잊어버립니다.

그의 팀원들이 달의 표면을 탐사하기 위해 착륙선 계단을 내려갈 때, 콜린스는 달의 반대편에서 혼자 기다렸습니다. 그는 닐이나 버즈, 또 지구에 있는 사람들과 완전히 연락이 단절되어 있었습니다. 미국 항공 우주국의 관제 센터는 이렇게 논평했습니다. “아담 이후로 그 어느 누구도 마이클 콜린스와 같은 외로움을 맛본 사람은 없었다.”

THE LONELIEST MAN

On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin stepped out of their lunar landing module and became the first humans to walk on the surface of the moon. But we don’t often think about the third person on their team, Michael Collins, who was flying the command module for Apollo 11.

After his teammates clambered down the ladder to test the lunar surface, Collins waited alone on the far side of the moon. He was out of touch with Neil, Buzz, and everyone on earth. NASA’s mission control commented, “Not since Adam has any human known such solitude as Mike Collins.”

There are times when we feel completely alone. Imagine, for instance, how Joseph, Jacob’s son, felt when he was taken from Canaan to Egypt after his brothers sold him (GENESIS 37:23–28). Then he was thrust into further isolation by being thrown in prison on false charges (39:19–20).

How did Joseph survive in prison in a foreign land with no family anywhere nearby? Listen to this: “While Joseph was there in the prison, the Lord was with him” (VV. 20–21). Four times we’re reminded of this comforting truth in Genesis 39.

Do you feel alone or isolated from others? Hold on to the truth of God’s presence, promised by Jesus Himself: “Surely I am with you always” (MATTHEW 28:20). With Jesus as your Savior, you’re never alone.

상상만 할 수 있을 뿐입니다

교회에서 한 여인의 뒷자리에 앉자 바로 찬양팀이 “I Can Only Imagine (상상만 할 수 있을 뿐입니다)”을 연주하기 시작했습니다. 내가 손을 들고 하나님을 찬양할 때 그 여인의 이름다운 소프라노 음성이 나의 목소리와 화음을 이루었습니다. 그녀는 자신의 건강 문제를 내게 말해주었는데, 우리는 그녀가 암 치료를 받는 동안 함께 기도하기로 했습니다.

몇 달 후 루이스는 자신이 죽는 것이 두렵다고 했습니다. 나는 병원 침대에 기대어 그녀의 머리 옆에 내 머리를 바짝 대고 속삭이며 기도하고 조용히 우리의 노래를 불렀습니다. 불과 며칠 뒤 루이스가 예수님을 직접 만나 경배하게 되었을 때 그녀의 느낌이 어땠을지는 오직 상상만 할 수 있을 뿐입니다.

바울 사도는 죽음을 앞둔 사람들에게 편지를 보내어 위로의 약속을 해주었습니다(고린도후서 5:1). 우리가 영원의 이쪽 편에서 고통받으며 탄식할 수도 있지만, 우리의 소망은 하늘의 처소, 곧 예수님과 함께하는 영생에 단단히 매여 있습니다(2-4절). 하나님은 우리가 그분과 함께하는 영원한 삶을 갈망하도록 우리를 지으셨지만(5-6절), 하나님의 약속은 우리가 이 땅에서 하나님을 위해 사는 삶을 위해서도 주신 것입니다(7-10절).

예수님이 다시 오시거나 우리를 부르시기를 기다리는 동안 우리가 주님을 기쁘시게 하며 살 때, 우리는 주님의 한결같은 임재 가운데 평안을 누릴 수 있습니다. 육신을 떠나 주와 함께 영생을 누리는 순간, 우리는 무엇을 경험하게 될까요? 오직 상상만 할 수 있을 뿐입니다!

I CAN ONLY IMAGINE

I settled into the church pew behind a woman as the worship team began playing “I Can Only Imagine.” Raising my hands, I praised God as the woman’s sweet soprano voice harmonized with mine. After telling me about her health struggles, we decided to pray together during her upcoming cancer treatments.

A few months later, Louise told me she feared dying. Leaning onto her hospital bed, I rested my head next to hers, whispered a prayer, and quietly sang our song. I can only imagine what it was like for Louise when she worshiped Jesus face-to-face just a few days later.

The apostle Paul offered comforting assurance for his readers who were facing death (2 CORINTHIANS 5:1). The suffering experienced on this side of eternity may cause groaning, but our hope remains anchored to our heavenly dwelling—our eternal existence with Jesus (VV. 2–4). Though God designed us to yearn for everlasting life with Him (VV. 5–6), His promises are meant to impact the way we live for Him now (VV. 7–10).

As we live to please Jesus while waiting for Him to return or call us home, we can rejoice in the peace of His constant presence. What will we experience the moment we leave our earthly bodies and join Jesus in eternity? We can only imagine!

젠은 첫 남편과 사별 후 재혼했습니다. 그러나 새 남편의 자녀들은 그녀를 한 번도 받아주지 않았습니다. 그리고 남편이 세상을 떠난 지금, 자녀들은 자신들이 어렸을 때 살던 집에 젠이 계속 사는 것을 싫어했습니다. 남편은 젠을 위해 약간의 돈을 남겼는데, 그의 아이들은 젠이 자신들의 유산을 훔친 거라고 말합니다. 젠은 당연히 낙담했고, 점점 더 힘들어하고 있습니다.

나오미는 베들레헴으로 돌아올 때 괴로웠지만, 그럼에도 그녀는 고향으로 돌아왔습니다. 당신도 고향으로 돌아올 수 있습니다. 베들레헴에서 나신 룻의 후손, 예수님께로 오십시오. 그분의 사랑 안에서 안식을 누리십시오.

때가 되어 하나님은 그분의 완벽한 계획을 이루시며 나오미의 고통을 기쁨으로 바꾸어 주셨습니다(4:13-22). 하나님은 당신의 괴로움도 바꾸실 수 있습니다. 하나님께로 돌아오십시오.

WHAT’S YOUR NAME?

Jen remarried after her first husband died. The children of her new husband never accepted her, and now that he’s passed away too, they hate her for remaining in their childhood home. Her husband left a modest sum to provide for her; his kids say she’s stealing their inheritance. Jen is understandably discouraged, and she’s grown bitter.

Naomi’s husband moved the family to Moab, where he and their two sons died. Years later, Naomi returned to Bethlehem empty-handed, except for her daughter-in-law Ruth. The town was stirred and asked, “Can this be Naomi?” (RUTH 1:19). She said they shouldn’t use that name, which means “my pleasant one.” They should call her “Mara,” which means “bitter,” because “I went away full, but the Lord has brought me back empty” (VV. 20–21).

Is there a chance your name is Bitter? You’ve been disappointed by friends, family, or declining health. You deserved better. But you didn’t get it. Now you’re bitter.

Naomi came back to Bethlehem bitter, but she came back. You can come home too. Come to Jesus, the descendant of Ruth, born in Bethlehem. Rest in His love.

In time, God replaced Naomi’s bitterness with the joyful fulfillment of His perfect plan (4:13–22). He can replace your bitterness too. Come home to Him.

우리는 다 나그네

다른 나라에 온 그들 가족에게는 언어와 학교, 관습, 교통, 날씨 등 모든 것이 아주 달라서 어떻게 적응해 나갈지 막막했습니다. 가까운 교회의 교인들이 와서 낯선 곳에서 새 삶을 시작하는 그들을 도와주었습니다. 패티는 그 부부를 동네 시장에 데리고 가서 파는 물건들과 사는 방법을 알려주었습니다. 가게를 둘러보던 그들은 고향에서 좋아하던 과일인 석류를 보고 눈이 둥그레지며 활짝 웃었습니다. 그들은 아이들 수에 맞춰 석류를 사고 감사의 표시로 패티의 손에도 하나를 쥐여주었습니다. 그들은 그 작은 과일과 새 친구들로 인해 이 낯선 이국 땅에서 큰 위안을 얻을 수 있었습니다.

하나님은 모세를 통해 자기 백성에게 율법들을 주셨는데, 그중에는 그들과 함께 있는 이방인들을 “너희 동족 같이”(레위기 19:34, 현대인의 성경) 여기라는 계명도 포함되어 있습니다. 하나님은 더 나아가 “자기 같이 사랑하라” 고 명령하셨습니다. 예수님은 이 계명을 하나님을 사랑하라는 계명 다음으로 가장 중요한 둘째 계명이라고 하셨습니다(마태복음 22:39). 그것은 하나님도 “나그네들을 보호하시기” 때문입니다(시편 146:9).

WE ARE STRANGERS

Everything felt drastically different in their new country—new language, schools, customs, traffic, and weather. They wondered how they would ever adjust. People from a nearby church gathered around them to help them in their new life in a new land. Patti took the couple shopping at a local food market to show them what’s available and how to purchase items. As they wandered around the market, their eyes widened and they smiled broadly when they saw their favorite fruit from their homeland— pomegranates. They bought one for each of their children and even placed one in Patti’s hands in gratefulness. The small fruit and new friends brought big comfort in their strange, new land.

God, through Moses, gave a list of laws for His people, which included a command to treat foreigners among them “as your native-born” (LEVITICUS 19:34). “Love them as yourself,” God further commanded. Jesus called this the second greatest commandment after loving God (MATTHEW 22:39). For even God “watches over the foreigner” (PSALM 146:9).

Besides obeying God as we help new friends adapt to life in our country, we may be reminded that we too in a real sense are “strangers on earth” (HEBREWS 11:13). And we’ll grow in our anticipation of the new heavenly land to come.

우리의 훌륭한 스승처럼

흰 띠를 맨 세 살짜리 아이가 사범을 따라 가라테를 하는 영상이 인터넷에 널리 퍼졌습니다. 그 여자아이는 열정과 확신에 찬 목소리로 리더를 따라 가라테 선서를 했습니다. 그리고 그 귀엽고 에너지 넘치는 작은 아이는 사범이 하는 모든 말과 행동을 침착하고 주의 깊게 아주 잘 따라 했습니다!

예수님은 “제자가 그 선생보다 높지 못하나 무릇 온전하게 된 자는 그 선생과 같으리라”(누가복음 6:40)고 말씀하셨습니다. 예수님은 제자들에게 자신을 본받아 관대하고, 사랑하고, 비판하지 말라고 말씀하셨습니다(37- 38절). 또한 “맹인이 맹인을 인도할 수 있느냐 둘이 다 구덩이에 빠지지 아니하겠느냐”(39절)고 하시면서 사람을 분별하여 따르라고 하셨습니다. 사람들을 파멸로 인도하는 눈먼 바리새인들에게는 예수님이 말씀하신 그런 자질이 없다는 것을 제자들은 분별할 수 있어야 했습니다(마태복음 15:14). 그리고 제자들은 그들의 스승인 예수님을 따르는 것의 중요성을 확실히 알아야 했습니다. 이처럼, 제자들의 목표는 예수님처럼 되는 것이어야 했습니다. 그래서 주의를 기울여 관용과 사랑에 대한 그리스도의 가르침을 배우고 적용하는 것이 그들에게 아주 중요한 일이었습니다.

오늘 예수님을 닮으려고 애쓰는 믿는 자로서, 주님의 지식과 지혜와 행동을 본받기 위해 우리의 가장 크신 스승이신 주님께 우리의 삶을 맡기도록 합시다. 주님만이 우리 삶에 그의 관용과 사랑이 나타나게 도우실 수 있습니다.

LIKE OUR GREAT TEACHER

In a viral video, a three-year-old white belt karate student imitated her instructor. With passion and conviction the little girl said the student creed with her leader. Then, with poise and attentiveness, the little ball of cuteness and energy imitated everything her teacher said and did—at least she did a pretty good job!

Jesus once said, “The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher” (LUKE 6:40). He told His disciples that to imitate Him included being generous, loving, nonjudgmental (VV. 37–38), and discerning about whom they followed: “Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into a pit?” (V. 39). His disciples needed to discern that this standard disqualified the Pharisees who were blind guides—leading people to disaster (MATTHEW 15:14). And they needed to grasp the importance of following their Teacher. Thus, the aim of Christ’s disciples was to become like Jesus Himself. So it was important for them to pay careful attention to Christ’s instruction about generosity and love and apply it.

As believers striving to imitate Jesus today, let’s give our lives over to our Master Teacher so we can become like Him in knowledge, wisdom, and behavior. He alone can help us reflect His generous, loving ways.

눈물 속의 축복

영국의 한 젊은이가 이메일을 보내왔습니다. 63세밖에 안 된 아버지가 위독해서 병원에 입원했는데 생명이 위태롭다는 내용이었습니다. 우리 둘이 만난 적은 없었지만 그의 아버지와 내가 하는 일이 많이 비슷했습니다. 그는 자기 아버지에게 용기를 주려고 나에게 격려와 기도의 영상 메시지를 부탁했습니다. 마음에 감동을 느낀 나는 쾌유를 비는 짧은 메시지와 기도를 담은 영상을 만들었습니다. 그의 아버지가 그 영상을 보고 진심으로 좋아했다고 했습니다. 그러나 이틀 후 안타깝게도 그의 아버지가 돌아가셨다는 이메일을 받았습니다. 그분은 부인의 손을 잡고 마지막 숨을 거두었다고 했습니다.

나는 그 가족의 커다란 사랑과 슬픔에 마음이 아팠습니다. 그들은 남편과 아버지를 너무 일찍 여의었습니다. 그런데 놀랍게도 예수님은 “애통하는 자는 복이 있다”(마태복음 5:4)고 말씀하시며 바로 이렇게 슬퍼하는 자들이 복이 있는 자들이라고 말씀하십니다. 예수님은 고통이나 슬픔이 좋다는 것이 아니라, 하나님의 긍휼과 자비가 그것이 가장 필요한 사람들에게 부어진다는 것을 말씀하신 것입니다. 사별로 인하여, 더 나아가 자신의 죄로 인해 슬퍼하는 사람들이 바로 하나님의 관심과 위로가 가장 필요한 사람들입니다. 예수님은 “그들이 위로를 받을 것”(4절)이라고 우리에게 약속하십니다.

하나님은 그의 사랑하는 자녀인(9절) 우리에게 다가오시며, 애통해 하는 우리를 축복하십니다.

BLESSING IN THE TEARS

I received an email from a young man in England, a son who explained that his father (only sixty-three) was in the hospital in critical condition, hanging on to life. Though we’d never met, his dad’s work and mine shared many intersections. The son, trying to cheer his father, asked me to send a video message of encouragement and prayer. Deeply moved, I recorded a short message and a prayer for healing. I was told that his dad watched the video and gave a hearty thumbs-up. Sadly, a couple days later, I received another email telling me that he had died. He held his wife’s hand as he took his final breath.

My heart broke. Such love, such devastation. The family lost a husband and father far too soon. Yet it’s surprising to hear Jesus insist that it’s precisely these grieving ones who are blessed: “Blessed are those who mourn,” Jesus says (MATTHEW 5:4). Jesus isn’t saying suffering and sorrow are good, but rather that God’s mercy and kindness pour over those who need it most. Those overcome by grief due to death or even their own sinfulness are most in need of God’s attention and consolation—and Jesus promises us “they will be comforted” (V. 4).

God steps toward us, His loved children (V. 9). He blesses us in our tears.

축복의 주관자

SUSTAINER OF BLESSINGS

On January 15, 1919, a huge molasses tank burst in Boston. A fifteen-foot wave of more than two million gallons of molasses careened through the street at over 30 mph, sweeping away railcars, buildings, people, and animals. Molasses might seem harmless enough, but that day it was deadly: 21 people lost their lives with more than 150 injured.

Sometimes even good things—like molasses—can overwhelm us unexpectedly. Before the Israelites entered the land God promised them, Moses warned the people to be careful not to take credit for the good things they’d receive: “When you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase . . . , then your heart will become proud and you will forget the Lord your God.” They weren’t to attribute this wealth to their own strength or capabilities. Instead, Moses said, “Remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth” (DEUTERONOMY 8:12–14, 17–18).

All good things—including physical health and the skills needed to earn a living—are blessings from the hand of our loving God. Even when we’ve worked hard, it’s He who sustains us. Oh, to hold our blessings with open hands, that we may gratefully praise God for His kindness to us!

탈진해 지쳤을 때

전 세계적인 보건 위기 속에서 간호사로서 겪는 엄청난 절망감을 얘기하다가 친구는 눈물을 흘리며 말했습니다. “이제 더 이상 못할 것 같아. 하나님께서 나를 간호사로 부르신 것은 알겠지만 난 너무 지쳤고 정신적으로 메말라버렸어.” 완전히 탈진해 있는 친구를 보며 나는 말했습니다. “지금 너무 어려운 상황이라 그래. 하지만 하나님께 네가 어떻게 해야 할지 알려달라고, 그리고 견딜 수 있는 힘을 달라고 기도하자.” 그러자 친구는 열심히 기도하며 하나님을 찾아보겠다고 했습니다. 얼마 지나지 않아 친구는 새로운 소명을 갖고 활기를 되찾았습니다. 간호사의 일을 계속할 용기를 얻었을 뿐 아니라, 전국 곳곳의 병원을 다니며 더 많은 사람들을 섬길 수 있도록 하나님께서 힘도 더해 주셨습니다.

예수님을 믿는 우리는 과중한 짐으로 고단할 때 언제나 하나님을 바라봄으로 도움과 용기를 얻을 수 있습니다. 그분은 “피곤하지 않으시며 곤비하지 않으시기”(이사야 40:28) 때문입니다. 이사야 선지자는 하늘에 계신 우리 아버지께서 “피곤한 자에게는 능력을 주시며 무능한 자에게는 힘을 더하신다”(29절)고 말합니다. 하나님의 능력은 영원하지만, 하나님은 우리가 언젠가 육체적으로 정신적으로 지칠 수밖에 없다는 것을 잘 아십니다(30 절). 삶의 어려움을 혼자 헤쳐 나가려고 애쓰지 않고 하나님께 힘을 달라고 간구하면, 그분은 우리를 회복시키고 새롭게 하시며 믿음으로 나아갈 수 있는 의지를 주실 것입니다.

RUNNING ON EMPTY

“I just don’t think I can do this anymore,” my friend said through her tears as she discussed the overwhelming sense of hopelessness she faced as a nurse in a global health crisis. “I know that God has called me to nursing, but I’m overwhelmed and emotionally drained,” she confessed. Seeing that a cloud of exhaustion had come over her, I responded, “I know you feel helpless right now, but ask God to give you the direction you’re seeking and the strength to persevere.” At that moment, she decided to intentionally seek God through prayer. Soon after, my friend was invigorated with a new sense of purpose. Not only was she emboldened to continue nursing, but God also gave her the strength to serve even more people by traveling to hospitals around the country.

As believers in Jesus, we can always look to God for help and encouragement when we feel overburdened because “He will not grow tired or weary” (ISAIAH 40:28). The prophet Isaiah states that our Father in heaven “gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak” (V. 29). Though God’s strength is everlasting, He knows that we’ll inevitably have days when we’re physically and emotionally consumed (V. 30). But when we look to God for our strength instead of trying to sprint through life’s challenges alone, He’ll restore and renew us and give us the resolve to press on in faith.

2021년 2월 18일, 화성 탐사선 퍼서비어런스가 착륙할 당시 착륙을 지켜보던 이들은 “공포의 7분”을 견뎌야 했습니다. 탐사선은 2억 9 천2백만 마일(4억 7천만 킬로미터)의 여정을 끝낸 후 탐사선 스스로 복잡한 착륙 절차를 완료하는데 시간이 필요했습니다. 화성에서 지구까지 신호가 도달하려면 몇 분이 걸리기 때문에 미 항공우주국은 착륙이 진행되는 동안 퍼서비어런스로부터 온 소식을 지구에서 받으려면 적어도 몇 분간을 기다려야 했습니다. 이 일에 엄청난 노력과 자원을 쏟아부었던 팀에게 연락 두절은 정말로 끔찍한 상황이었습니다.

때로는 우리도 하나님께 기도를 드렸지만 응답을 받지 못할 때 두려움을 경험할 수 있습니다. 우리는 성경에서 기도 응답을 속히 받았던 인물과(다니엘 9:20-23 참조), 오랜 기간 응답을 받지 못했던 인물(사무엘상 1:10-20의 한나의 이야기 참조), 두 경우를 모두 찾아볼 수 있습니다. 기도 응답이 지연됨으로 가장 안타까웠던 예는 아마도 병든 오빠 나사로를 도와달라고 예수님께 간청했을 때의 마리아와 마르다 마음에 생겼던 두려움이었을 것입니다(요한복음 11:3). 예수님이 늦게 오셨고, 결국 나사로는 죽었습니다(6-7절, 14-15절). 하지만 나흘 뒤 예수님은 나사로를 부활시키심으로써 그 간구에 응답해 주셨습니다 (43-44절).

기도의 응답을 기다리는 것이 힘들 수 있습니다. 그러나 우리가 “긍휼하심을 받고 때를 따라 돕는 은혜를 얻기 위하여 [그의] 은혜의 보좌 앞에 담대히 나아갈 때”(히브리서 4:16) 하나님께서 우리를 위로하시고 도와주십니다.

SEVEN MINUTES OF TERROR

When the Mars rover Perseverance landed on that red planet on February 18, 2021, those monitoring its arrival endured “seven minutes of terror.” As the spacecraft ended its 292- million-mile journey, it went through a complex landing procedure it had to do on its own. Signals from Mars to Earth take several minutes, so NASA couldn’t hear from Perseverance during the landing. Not being in contact was frightening for the team who had put so much effort and resources into the mission.

Sometimes we may experience our own times of fear when we feel we’re not hearing from God—we pray but we don’t get answers. In Scripture, we find people getting answers to prayer quickly (SEE DANIEL 9:20–23) and those not getting answers for a long time (see Hannah’s story in 1 Samuel 1:10–20). Perhaps the most poignant example of a delayed answer—one that surely struck terror in the hearts of Mary and Martha—was when they asked Jesus to help their sick brother Lazarus (JOHN 11:3). Jesus delayed, and their brother died (VV. 6–7, 14–15). Yet four days later, Christ answered by resurrecting Lazarus (VV. 43–44).

Waiting for answers to our prayers can be difficult. But God can comfort and help as we “approach [His] throne of grace with confidence, . . . [that] we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need” (HEBREWS 4:16).

분홍색 코트

브랜다는 쇼핑몰을 나서다가 진열창에서 분홍빛이 뿜어져 나오는 것을 보았습니다. 돌아서는 순간 “솜사탕색 코트” 앞에서 넋을 잃고 말았습니다. 와, 할리가 정말 좋아하겠다! 브랜다 생각에 미혼모인 직장 동료 할리가 따뜻한 코트가 필요하지만 재정상태가 넉넉지 못한 그녀가 자신을 위해 돈을 쓰지는 않을 것 같았습니다. 잠시 머뭇거린 후 브랜다는 미소를 머금고 지갑을 꺼냈습니다. 그 코트를 사서 할리의 집으로 배송시키면서, “당신은 정말 사랑받고 있어요”라고 적힌 카드를 익명으로 동봉했습니다. 브랜다는 거의 춤을 추며 주차장으로 향했습니다.

기쁨은 하나님께서 주시는 마음으로 베풀 때 생기는 부산물입니다. 바울은 고린도 성도들에게 베풂의 방법을 가르치며 이렇게 말했습니다. “각각 그 마음에 정한대로 할 것이요 인색함으로나 억지로 하지 말지니 하나님은 즐겨내는 자를 사랑하시느니라”(고린도후서 9:7). 그리고 “많이 심는 자는 많이 거둔다”(6절)고도 했습니다.

우리는 헌금 바구니에 현금을 넣기도 하고, 귀한 사역에 온라인으로 기부를 하기도 합니다. 때로는 하나님의 사랑의 표현으로 친구의 필요를 채워주도록 하나님께서 우리를 인도하실 때도 있습니다. 그것은 식료품 한 봉지나 자동차 기름을 채워주는 것이거나... 혹은 완벽한 분홍색 코트일 수도 있습니다.

THE PINK COAT

Brenda was walking toward the mall exit when a flush of pink from a display window caught her eye. She turned and stood spellbound before a “cotton-candy-colored coat.” Oh, how Holly would love it! Finances had been tight for her coworker friend who was a single mother, and while Brenda knew Holly needed a warm coat, she was also confident that her friend would never lay down cash on such a purchase for herself. After wavering ever so slightly, Brenda smiled, reached for her wallet, and arranged for the coat to be shipped to Holly’s home. She added an anonymous card, “You are so very loved.” Brenda practically danced to her car.

Joy is a by-product of God-nudged giving. As Paul instructed the Corinthians in the art of generosity, he said, “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 CORINTHIANS 9:7). He also noted, “Whoever sows generously will also reap generously” (V. 6).

Sometimes we slip cash into the offering plate. At other times we donate online to a worthy ministry. And then there are moments when God leads us to respond to the need of a friend with a tangible expression of His love. We offer a bag of groceries, a tank of gas . . . or even the gift of a perfectly pink coat.
