목소리를 사용한 봉사

여덟 살 때부터 말을 더듬었던 리사는 사람들과 대화해야 하는 사회생활이 두려웠습니다. 그러나 나중에 언어치료를 받고 어려움을 극복한 리사는 자신의 목소리를 사용해 다른 사람들을 돕기로 결심하고 정신적 고통에 시달리는 사람들을 위해 전화 상담 자원봉사에 나섰습니다.

모세는 이스라엘 백성들을 포로생활에서 벗어나게 하는데 있어 자신의 말에 대한 걱정에 사로잡혔습니다. 하나님은 모세에게 바로에게 이야기하라고 하셨지만 모세는 자신이 말주변이 없다며 버텼습니다(출애굽기 4:10). 그러나 하나님은 그에게 “누가 사람의 입을 지었느냐”고 물으시며, “내가 네 입과 함께 있어서 할 말을 가르치리라”고 하시며 모세를 안심시키셨습니다(11-12절).

하나님의 이런 반응은 우리가 여러 가지로 부족해도 우리를 통해 하나님이 강력하게 역사하실 수 있다는 사실을 일깨워줍니다. 하지만 우리가 이것을 마음으로는 알고 있어도 그렇게 살아가기는 어려울 수 있습니다. 모세도 계속 씨름하며 하나님께 다른 사람을 보내 달라고 간청했습니다(13절). 그러자 하나님은 모세의 형 아론이 모세와 동행하도록 허락하셨습니다(14절).

우리 각자는 다른 사람을 도울 수 있는 목소리를 갖고 있습니다. 우리는 두려울 수도 있고, 자신이 없다고 느낄 수도 있습니다. 그리고 적절한 말을 찾지 못할 거라고 느낄 수도 있습니다.

그러나 우리의 그런 감정을 잘 알고 계시는 하나님은 우리가 다른 사람들을 섬기고 하나님의 일을 완수하는데 필요한 말과 모든 것을 공급해 주십니다.

USING YOUR VOICE

Since age eight, Lisa had struggled with a stammer and became afraid of social situations that required her to talk with people. But later in life, after speech therapy helped her overcome her challenge, Lisa decided to use her voice to help others. She began volunteering as a counselor for an emotional distress telephone hotline.

Moses had to face his concerns about speaking to help lead the Israelites out of captivity. God asked him to communicate with Pharaoh, but Moses protested because he didn’t feel confident in his speaking ability (EXODUS 4:10). God challenged him, “Who gave human beings their mouths?” Then He reassured Moses saying, “I will help you speak and will teach you what to say” (VV. 11–12).

God’s response reminds us that He can work powerfully through us even in our limitations. But even when we know this in our hearts, it can be hard to live it out. Moses continued to struggle and begged God to send someone else (V. 13). So God allowed Moses’ brother Aaron to accompany him (V. 14).

Each of us has a voice that can help others. We may be afraid. We may not feel capable. We may feel we don’t have the right words.

God knows how we feel. He can provide the words and all we need to serve others and accomplish His work.

하나님의 사랑

1917년, 재정난에 시달리던 캘리포니아 주의 사업가 프레드릭 리먼은 “그 크신 하나님의 사랑”이라는 찬송가 가사를 썼습니다. 영감을 받았던 그는 첫 두 절을 빠르게 써 내려갔지만 삼 절에서 막혀 버렸습니다. 그때 몇 년 전 교도소 벽에서 발견된 시가 떠올랐습니다. 한 죄수가 하나님의 사랑에 대한 사무침을 표현하며 돌에 새겨 놓은 시였습니다. 리먼은 자신의 찬송가와 같은 운율을 가진 이 시를 삼 절에 사용했습니다.

리먼과 교도소의 시인처럼 우리도 힘든 시련을 마주할 때가 있습니다. 절망스러울 때에는 우리도 시편 기자 다윗의 말처럼 “[하나님의] 날개 그늘 아래로 피하는”(시편 57:1, 새번역) 것이 좋습니다. 우리의 문제들을 가져와
“하나님께 부르짖고”(2절), 우리가 지금 겪고 있는 시련과 “사자들 가운데에서” (4절) 느끼는 두려움을 주님께 말해도 괜찮습니다. 우리는 곧 하나님이 지난날 베풀어 주셨던 것을 기억하고, 다윗과 같이 우리도 “내가 노래하고 내가 찬송하리이다... 내가 새벽을 깨우리로다”(7-8절)라고 고백하게 될 것입니다.

이 찬송가는 “그 크신 하나님의 사랑, 저 높고 높은 별을 넘어”라고 선포합니다. 진실로 우리가 가장 어려운 바로 그 순간, 우리는 하나님의 사랑이 실로 얼마나 큰지, 정말 “하늘에 미치는”(10절) 그 사랑을 깨닫게 됩니다.

THE LOVE OF GOD

In 1917, Frederick Lehman, a California businessman beset by financial setbacks, wrote the lyrics to the hymn, “The Love of God.” His inspiration led him quickly to pen the first two stanzas, but he got stuck on the third. He recalled a poem that had been discovered years earlier, written on the walls of a prison. A prisoner had scratched it there into the stone, expressing a deep awareness of God’s love. The poem happened to be in the same meter as Lehman’s hymn. He made it his third stanza.

There are times when we face difficult setbacks as did Lehman and the poet in the prison cell. In times of despair, we do well to echo the psalmist David’s words and “take refuge in the shadow of [God’s] wings” (PSALM 57:1). It’s okay to “cry out to God” with our troubles (V. 2), to speak to Him of our current ordeal and the fears we have when “in the midst of lions” (V. 4). We’re soon reminded of the reality of God’s provision in times past, and join David who says, “I will sing and make music. . . . I will awaken the dawn” (VV. 7–8).

“The love of God is greater far,” this hymn proclaims, adding “it goes beyond the highest star.” It’s precisely in our time of greatest need when we’re to embrace how great God’s love really is—indeed “reaching to the heavens” (V. 10).

작은 친절

아만다는 여러 양로원을 돌아다니며 일하는 방문 간호사인데, 종종 열한 살 난 딸 루비를 데리고 일하러 갑니다. 루비는 무언가 할 일을 찾다가 양로원에서 지내는 사람들에게 “무엇이든 세 가지를 가질 수 있다면 무엇을 갖고 싶으세요?”라고 묻고는 그들의 대답을 노트에 적었습니다. 놀랍게도 대다수 사람들의 소원은 비엔나소시지, 초콜릿 파이, 치즈, 아보카도와 같은 사소한 것들이었습니다. 그래서 루비는 그들의 작은 소원들을 이루어주려고 모금을 시작했습니다. 루비는 맛있는 것들을 전해줄 때 다음과 같이 말하면서 그들을 안아 줍니다. “이걸 드시면 힘을 얻으실 거예요. 정말로요.”

우리가 루비가 한 것처럼 긍휼과 친절을 베푼다면 “은혜로우시며 긍휼이 많으시며... 인자하심이 크신”(시편 145:8) 우리 하나님을 드러내는 것입니다. 그래서 바울 사도는 우리가 하나님의 사람들로서 “긍휼과 자비와 겸손과 온유와 오래 참음을 옷 입어야”(골로새서 3:12)한다고 힘주어 말했습니다. 하나님께서 우리에게 큰 긍휼을 보여주셨기 때문에 우리는 당연히 주님의 긍휼을 다른 이들과 나누기를 갈망합니다. 그리고 우리가 힘써 그렇게 하면, 우리자신이 “긍휼의 옷을 차려입게” 됩니다.

바울은 계속해서 말합니다. “이 모든 것 위에 사랑을 더하라 이는 온전하게 매는 띠니라”(14절). 그리고 모든 선한 것들이 다 하나님으로부터 온다는 사실을 기억하고 “무엇을 하든지... 다 주 예수의 이름으로 하라”(17 절)고 일깨워 줍니다. 우리가 다른 이들에게 친절을 베풀면 우리의 영혼이 힘을 얻게 됩니다.

SMALL KINDNESSES

Amanda works as a visiting nurse who rotates among several nursing homes—often bringing her eleven-year-old daughter Ruby to work. For something to do, Ruby began asking residents, “If you could have any three things, what would you want?” and recording their answers in her notebook. Surprisingly, many of their wishes were for little things—Vienna sausages, chocolate pie, cheese, avocados. So Ruby set up a GoFundMe to help her provide for their simple wishes. And when she delivers the goodies, she doles out hugs. She says, “It lifts you. It really does.”

When we show compassion and kindness like Ruby’s, we reflect our God who “is gracious and compassionate . . . and rich in love” (PSALM 145:8). That’s why the apostle Paul urged us, as God’s people, to “clothe [our]selves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience” (COLOSSIANS 3:12). Because God has shown great compassion to us, we naturally long to share His compassion with others. And as we do so intentionally, we “clothe” ourselves in it.

Paul goes on to tell us: “over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity” (V. 14). And he reminds us that we are to “do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus” (V. 17), remembering that all good things come from God. When we’re kind to others, our spirits are lifted.

둘 다 맞습니다

펭 루루는 30년이 지나서 자기 친가족과 다시 만났습니다. 어렸을 때 집 밖에서 놀다가 유괴를 당한 그녀는 중국 총 여성 연맹의 도움으로 마침내 가족의 품으로 돌아올 수 있었습니다. 펭 루루는 너무 어릴 때 유괴되었기 때문에 그 사실을 기억하지 못합니다. 그녀는 부모가 양육할 여력이 없어서 자신을 팔았다고 믿으며 자랐습니다. 그래서 사실을 알게 되자 많은 의문과 함께 여러가지 감정이 솟구쳤습니다.

요셉이 형들과 재회했을 때에도 아마 여러 가지 감정으로 마음이 복잡했을 것입니다. 그는 어렸을 때 형들에 의해 이집트에 노예로 팔려 갔습니다. 우여 곡절의 삶을 고통스럽게 계속 겪었지만, 하나님은 요셉을 높은 권세의 자리에 앉게 하셨습니다. 기근으로 이집트에 양식을 사러 온 형들은 이런 사실을 꿈에도 모른 채 요셉에게 양식을 구했습니다.

요셉은 하나님이 형들의 과오를 속량해 주셨음을 알고 “하나님이 큰 구원으로 [그들의] 생명을 보존”하기 위해 그렇게 사용하셨다고 말했습니다 (창세기 45:7). 그러나 요셉은 자신에게 했던 형들의 그 마음 아픈 행동을 다른 식으로 말하지 않았습니다. 그는 그 행동을 정확하게 “[그를] 팔았다”(5절) 고 표현했습니다.

우리는 때때로 어려운 상황에 대해 지나치게 긍정적으로 해석하고, 감정적인 어려움을 인정하지 않은 채 하나님이 그 상황에서 주시는 좋은 일에만 초점을 맞추려고 합니다. 하나님이 속량하셨다는 이유만으로 잘못을 좋은 것으로 재정의하지 않도록 주의하시기 바랍니다. 우리는 잘못된 행동으로 말미암은 고통을 인정하면서, 또 동시에 좋은 일을 가져다주시는 하나님을 기대할 수 있습니다. 둘 다 맞습니다.

BOTH ARE TRUE

After three decades, Feng Lulu was reunited with her birth family. As a toddler, she was kidnapped while playing outside her house, but through the help of All-China Women’s Federation, she was finally located. Because she was so young when she was abducted, Feng Lulu doesn’t remember it. She grew up believing she’d been sold because her parents couldn’t afford to keep her, so learning the truth surfaced many questions and emotions.

When Joseph was reunited with his brothers, it’s likely he experienced some complex emotions. He’d been sold by his brothers into slavery in Egypt as a young man. Despite a series of painful twists and turns, God propelled Joseph to a position of authority. When his brothers came to Egypt to buy food during a famine, they—unwittingly—sought it from him.

Joseph acknowledged that God redeemed their wrongdoing, saying He used it to “save [their] lives by a great deliverance” (GENESIS 45:7). Yet Joseph didn’t redefine their hurtful actions toward him—he described them accurately as “selling [him]” (V. 5).

We sometimes try to put an overly positive spin on difficult situations, focusing on the good God brings from them without acknowledging the emotional struggle. Let’s take care not to redefine a wrong as being good simply because God redeemed it: we can look for Him to bring good from it while still recognizing the pain wrongdoing causes. Both are true.

문제의 근원

1854년, 런던에서 수천 명의 사람들이 알 수 없는 원인으로 죽어나갔습니다. 사람들은 ‘분명 오염된 공기 때문일 것’이라고 생각했습니다. 실제로 당시에 하수로 오염된 템스 강이 이상 기온으로 가열되면서 그 고약한 냄새가 “엄청난 악취”를 풍기고 있었습니다.

하지만 더 심각한 문제는 공기가 아니었습니다. 존 스노우 박사의 연구에 의해 오염된 물이 콜레라 전염병의 원인으로 밝혀졌습니다.

우리 인간은 높은 하늘에까지 악취를 풍기는 다른 위기를 오래전부터 인식하고 있었습니다. 우리는 타락한 세상에 살면서 이 문제의 근원을 제대로 파악하지 못하고 대신 증상을 치유하려고만 했습니다. 좋은 사회 프로그램과 정책들은 부분적인 효과를 볼 수 있지만, 사회 병폐의 근본 원인인 죄로 물든 우리의 마음의 문제는 전혀 해결할 수 없습니다.

예수님이 “무엇이든지 밖에서 사람에게로 들어가는 것은 능히 사람을 더럽게 하지 못한다”고 말씀하셨을 때 몸의 질병을 말씀하신 것이 아니었습니다 (마가복음 7:15). 주님은 오히려 우리 각자의 영적 상태를 진단하고 계셨습니다. 주님은 “사람 안에서 나오는 것이 사람을 더럽게 하는 것”(15절)이라고 말씀하시며, 우리 안에 숨겨진 장황한 악의 목록들을 말씀하셨습니다(21-22절).

다윗은 “내가 죄악 중에서 출생하였음이여”라고 기록하였습니다(시편 51:5). 그의 탄식은 우리 모두의 탄식이기도 합니다. 우리는 처음부터 타락한 존재입니다. 그래서 다윗은 “하나님이여 내 속에 정한 마음을 창조하시고” (10절)라고 기도했습니다. 우리에게는 매일 예수님이 성령을 통해 창조하시는 새 마음이 필요합니다.

THE SOURCE

It was 1854, and something was killing thousands of people in London. It must be the bad air, people thought. And indeed, as unseasonable heat baked the sewage-fouled River Thames, the smell grew so bad it became known as “The Great Stink.”

But the worst problem wasn’t the air. Research by Dr. John Snow would show that contaminated water was the cause of the cholera epidemic.

We humans have long been aware of another crisis—one that stinks to high heaven. We live in a broken world—and we’re prone to misidentify the source of this problem, treating symptoms instead. Wise social programs and policies do some good, but they’re powerless to stop the root cause of society’s ills—our sinful hearts!

When Jesus said, “Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them,” He wasn’t referring to physical diseases (MARK 7:15). Rather, He was diagnosing the spiritual condition of every one of us. “It is what comes out of a person that defiles them,” He said (V. 15), listing a litany of evils lurking inside us (VV. 21–22).

“Surely I was sinful at birth,” David wrote (PSALM 51:5). His lament is one we can all voice. We’re broken from the beginning. That’s why David prayed, “Create in me a pure heart, O God” (V. 10). Every day, we need that new heart, created by Jesus through His Spirit.

Instead of treating the symptoms, we must let Jesus purify the source.

우정이라는 유산

1970년대에 내가 고등학교 영어 교사 겸 농구팀 코치를 맡고 있을 때 그를 만났습니다. 그는 키가 크고 호리호리한 신입생이었습니다. 곧 그가 우리 농구팀에 들어오고 내 반 학생이 되면서 우정 관계가 형성되었습니다. 오랜 세월 나와 함께 편집자로 일했던 그 친구는 내 은퇴를 축하하는 모임에서 내 앞에 서서 우리 사이의 오랜 우정의 유산을 이야기했습니다.

하나님의 사랑으로 연결된 친구들과의 어떤 우정이 우리를 격려하고 예수님께 더 가까이 다가가게 해줄까요? 잠언 저자는 우정에는 두 가지 격려의 요소가 있다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 첫째로, 조언을 주거나 받아들이기가 쉽지 않음에도 진정한 친구는 소중한 조언을 해줍니다(27:6). 저자는 “친구의 아픈 책망은 충직으로 말미암는 것”이라고 설명합니다. 둘째로, 가까이 있어 쉽게 찾을 수 있는 친구는 “가까운 이웃이 먼 형제보다 낫다”(10절)는 말씀처럼 위기의 순간에 중요한 존재입니다.

인생을 홀로 살아가는 것은 좋지 않습니다. 솔로몬은 “두 사람이 한 사람보다 나음은 그들이 수고함으로 좋은 상을 얻을 것임이라”(전도서 4:9)고 말했습니다. 살면서 우리는 친구들이 필요하고 우리도 다른 사람들의 친구가 되어 주어야 합니다. 하나님의 도우심으로 우리가 “형제를 사랑하여 서로 우애하고”(로마서 12:10) “짐을 서로 지는”(갈라디아서 6:2) 삶을 통해 다른 사람들을 격려하고 예수님의 사랑에 더 가까이 가도록 돕는 그런 친구가 될 수 있기를 소망합니다.

LEGACY OF FRIENDS

I met him in the 1970s when I was a high school English teacher and basketball coach, and he was a tall, gangly freshman. Soon he was on my basketball team and in my classes—and a friendship was formed. This same friend, who had served with me as a fellow editor for many years, stood before me at my retirement party and shared about the legacy of our longstanding friendship.

What is it about friends connected by the love of God that encourages us and brings us closer to Jesus? The writer of Proverbs understood that friendship has two encouraging components: First, true friends give valuable advice, even if it’s not easy to give or take (27:6): “Wounds from a friend can be trusted,” the writer explains. Second, a friend who is nearby and accessible is important in times of crisis: “Better a neighbor nearby than a relative far away” (V. 10).

It’s not good for us to fly solo in life. As Solomon noted: “Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed” (ECCLESIASTES 4:9 nlt). In life, we need to have friends and we need to be friends. May God help us “love one another with brotherly affection” (ROMANS 12:10 esv) and “carry each other’s burdens” (GALATIANS 6:2)—becoming the kind of friend that can encourage others and draw them closer to the love of Jesus.

현명한가, 어리석은가?

열 살 때, 교회 친구가 준 현대 크리스천 밴드의 음악이 담긴 카세트 테이프를 집으로 가져온 적이 있었습니다. 그러나 힌두교 가정에서 자라나서 예수님을 믿고 구원받은 아버지는 그것을 용납하지 않으셨습니다. 아버지는 집에서 오직 교회 찬송가만 듣기를 원하셨습니다. 나는 ‘크리스천’ 밴드의 음악이라고 설명했지만 아버지는 마음을 바꾸지 않았습니다. 그러나 얼마 후 아버지는 그 노래들을 1주일 동안 들어보고 내가 하나님과 더 가까워지는지 아니면 더 멀어지는지 확인해보자고 하셨습니다. 정말 도움이 되는 지혜로운 조언이었습니다.

삶에는 옳고 그름이 명확한 것들도 있지만, 많은 경우 우리는 논쟁의 여지가 있는 일들을 가지고 씨름합니다(로마서 14:1-19). 우리는 할 일을 결정할 때 성경 말씀에서 지혜를 구할 수 있습니다. 바울은 에베소의 교인들에게 “너희가 어떻게 행할지를 자세히 주의하여 지혜 없는 자 같이 하지 말고 오직 지혜있는 자 같이 하라”(에베소서 5:15)고 권면했습니다. 좋은 부모처럼, 바울도 모든 상황에 함께 있거나 일일이 조언을 할 수 없다는 것을 알고 있었습니다. 만약 그들이 “때가 악하니 세월을 아끼고자” 한다면, 스스로 분별하여 “주의 뜻이 무엇인가 이해”해야 했습니다(16-17절). 지혜로운 삶은 논쟁의 여지가 있는 문제와 씨름할 때조차도 하나님의 인도하심에 따른 분별과 올바른 결정을 추구하도록 이끌어줍니다.

WISE OR UNWISE?

When I was ten, I brought home a cassette tape from a friend at youth group that contained the music of a contemporary Christian band. My dad, who had been raised in a Hindu home but had received salvation in Jesus, didn’t approve. He only wanted worship music played in our home. I explained it was a Christian band, but that didn’t change his mind. After a while, he suggested that I listen to the songs for a week and then decide if they brought me closer to God or pushed me further away from Him. There was some helpful wisdom in that advice.

There are things in life that are clearly right or wrong, but many times we wrestle with disputable matters (ROMANS 14:1–19). In deciding what to do, we can seek the wisdom found in Scripture. Paul encouraged the Ephesian believers to “be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise” (EPHESIANS 5:15). Like a good parent, Paul knew that he couldn’t possibly be there or give instructions for every situation. If they were going to “[make] the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil,” they were going to have to discern for themselves and “understand what the Lord’s will is” (VV. 16–17). A life of wisdom is an invitation to
pursue discernment and good decisions as God guides us even when we wrestle with what might be disputable.

이웃 사랑

코로나바이러스 팬데믹 기간 동안 자가격리와 봉쇄 기간을 보내며 마틴 루터 킹 목사가 “버밍햄 감옥에서 보낸 편지”에서 한 말들이 실감났습니다. 킹 목사는 불의에 관해 말하면서 어떻게 한 도시에 한가롭게 앉아 다른 도시에서 일어나는 일에 무관심할 수 있겠는가 묻습니다. “우리는 운명이라는 옷 한 벌에 서로 묶여 피할 수 없는 네트워크 속에 갇혀 있습니다. 한 곳이 직접적으로 영향을 받으면 우리 모두 다 간접적으로 영향을 받는 것입니다.”

마찬가지로, 코로나19 팬데믹으로 세계의 도시들과 나라들이 바이러스의 확산을 막기 위해 봉쇄하자 우리가 서로 연결되어 있음이 확연히 드러나게 되었습니다. 한 도시에 바이러스가 퍼지면 곧 다른 도시가 영향을 받았습니다.

오래 전에, 하나님은 그의 백성들에게 다른 사람들을 어떻게 돌봐야 하는지에 대해 가르쳐 주셨습니다. 하나님은 모세를 통해 이스라엘 백성들에게 율법을 주어 그들을 인도하고 그들이 함께 사는 삶을 도와주셨습니다. 주님은 “네 이웃의 피를 흘려 이익을 도모하지 말고”(레위기 19:16), 원수를 갚지 말고 다른 사람들을 원망하지 말며 “네 이웃 사랑하기를 네 자신과 같이 사랑하라”(18절)고 말씀하셨습니다. 하나님은 사람들이 다른 사람을 돌보지 않고 다른 이들의 생명을 자신의 것만큼 소중히 여기지 않는다면 공동체는 갈라질 수밖에 없음을 잘 아셨습니다.

우리도 하나님의 교훈이 주는 지혜를 품을 수 있습니다. 우리가 일상생활을 하면서 어떻게 다른 사람들을 사랑하고 잘 섬길 수 있는지 주님께 구하면 우리가 다른 사람들과 얼마나 서로 연결되어 있는지 기억할 수 있게 될 것입니다.

LOVING OUR NEIGHBORS

In the days of self-isolation and lockdown during the coronavirus pandemic, words by Martin Luther King Jr. in his “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” rang true. Speaking about injustice, he remarked how he couldn’t sit idly in one city and not be concerned about what happens in another. “We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality,” he said, “tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects us all indirectly.”

Likewise, the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted our connectedness as around the world cities and countries closed to stop the spread of the virus. What affected one city could soon affect another.

Many centuries ago, God instructed His people how to show concern for others. Through Moses, He gave the Israelites the law to guide them and help them live together. He told them to “not do anything that endangers your neighbor’s life” (LEVITICUS 19:16); and to not seek revenge or bear a grudge against others, but to “love your neighbor as yourself” (V. 18). God knew that communities would start to unravel if people didn’t look out for others, valuing their lives as much as they did their own.

We too can embrace the wisdom of God’s instructions. As we go about our daily activities, we can remember how interconnected we are with others as we ask Him how to love and serve

월요일에 대한 감사

나는 월요일을 몹시 싫어했습니다. 때로는 전에 다니던 직장 건물에 단 몇 분이라도 늦게 가려고 기차에서 내린 후 한동안 역에 앉아 있곤 했습니다. 일의 마감 시간을 지키거나, 변덕이 심한 상사의 기분을 맞추는 것이 염려가 될 때면 심장이 빨리 뛰기도 했습니다.

우리 중 어떤 사람들에게는 지루한 한 주간의 일을 또다시 시작하는 게 특히 어려울 수도 있습니다. 우리는 직장에서 과중한 업무에 시달리거나 별로 인정받지 못하고 있다고 느낄지도 모릅니다. 솔로몬 왕도 일의 수고에 대해 이렇게 말했습니다. “사람이 해 아래에서 행하는 모든 수고와 마음에 애쓰는 것이 무슨 소득이 있으랴 일평생에 근심하며 수고하는 것이 슬픔뿐이라” (전도서 2:22-23).

그 현명한 왕은 일의 스트레스를 줄이거나 더 나은 보상을 얻을 수 있는 만병통치약을 주기보다는 우리에게 관점을 바꿔 보라고 제안합니다. 그는 우리의 일이 아무리 어렵더라도, 하나님의 도우심으로 그 일에서 “만족을 찾으라”고 권면합니다(24절). 어쩌면 성령님이 우리에게서 그리스도의 성품을 드러내시면 그렇게 될지도 모르겠습니다. 아니면, 우리의 섬김을 통해 축복받은 사람들의 이야기를 듣거나, 하나님이 주신 지혜를 기억하여 어려운 상황을 헤쳐나가게 될 때 그렇게 될 수 있을 것입니다. 우리가 하는 일이 힘들어도 신실하신 하나님께서 그 일에 우리와 함께 하십니다. 하나님의 임재와 능력은 어두운 날들조차 환하게 밝혀 주십니다. 하나님의 도우심으로 우리는 월요일을 감사할 수 있습니다.

THANKFUL FOR MONDAY

I used to dread Mondays. Sometimes, when I got off the train to head to a previous job, I’d sit at the station for a while, trying to delay reaching the building, if only for a few minutes. My heart would beat fast as I worried over meeting the deadlines and managing the moods of a temperamental boss.

For some of us, it can be especially difficult to start another dreary workweek. We may be feeling overwhelmed or underappreciated in our job. King Solomon described the toil of work when he wrote: “What do people get for all the toil and anxious striving with which they labor under the sun? All their days their work is grief and pain” (ECCLESIASTES 2:22–23).

While the wise king didn’t give us a cure-all for making work less stressful or more rewarding, he did offer us a change in perspective. No matter how difficult our work is, he encourages us to “find satisfaction” in it with God’s help (V. 24). Perhaps it will come as the Holy Spirit enables us to display Christlike character. Or as we hear from someone who’s been blessed through our service. Or as we remember the wisdom God provided to deal with a difficult situation. Though our work may be difficult, our faithful God is there with us. His presence and power can light up even gloomy days. With His help, we can be thankful for Monday.

게헨나에서 바라본 소망

1979년 고고학자 가브리엘 발케이가 은으로 된 작은 두루마리 두 점을 발굴했는데, 이 금속 두루마리들을 조심스럽게 펴는 데에도 여러 해가 걸렸습니다. 각 두루마리에는 민수기 6:24-26의 축복의 말씀이 히브리어로 새겨져 있었습니다. “여호와는 네게 복을 주시고 너를 지키시기를 원하며 여호와는 그의 얼굴을 네게 비추사 은혜 베푸시기를 원하며 여호와는 그 얼굴을 네게로 향하여 평강 주시기를 원하노라.” 학자들은 이 두루마리들을 기원전 7세기의 것으로 추정합니다. 이는 세계에서 발견된 가장 오래된 성경 조각입니다.

이 두루마리들이 발견된 장소 또한 흥미롭습니다. 발케이는 하나님이 자기 자식들을 희생 제물로 바치며 우상을 섬겼던 유다 사람들을 다 죽일 거라고 예레미야 선지자가 예언했던 바로 그 힌놈 골짜기의 동굴을 발굴하고 있었습니다(예레미야 19:4-6). 예수님은 아주 사악한 장소인 이 골짜기 “게헨나”( 히브리어 “힌놈 골짜기”의 헬라어 표기)를 지옥의 모습으로 부르셨습니다(

예레미야가 하나님이 그의 백성들에게 내릴 심판을 선포했던 그 시기에, 바로 그 장소에서 누군가가 하나님이 장차 주실 축복을 이 은 두루마리에 새겨 넣었습니다. 비록 이 축복이 그들이 사는 동안에는 임하지 않았지만, 훗날 바벨론이 침략했을 때 하나님은 그의 백성들을 다시 돌아보시고 그들에게 평강을 주셨습니다.

HOPE FROM GEHENNA

In 1979, archaeologist Gabriel Barkay unearthed two small silver scrolls. It took years to delicately unroll the metal scrolls, and each was found to contain a Hebrew etching of the blessing
from Numbers 6:24–26, “The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.” Scholars date the scrolls to the seventh century bc. They’re the oldest known bits of Scripture in the world.

Equally interesting is where they were found. Barkay was digging in a cave in the Valley of Hinnom, the very place where the prophet Jeremiah told the people of Judah that God would slaughter them for sacrificing their children (JEREMIAH 19:4–6). This valley was the site of such wickedness that Jesus used the word “Gehenna” (a Greek form of the Hebrew name for the “Valley of Hinnom”) as a picture of hell (MATTHEW 23:33).

On this spot, about the time Jeremiah was announcing God’s judgment on his nation, someone was etching His future blessing onto silver scrolls. It wouldn’t happen in their lifetime, but one day—on the other side of the Babylonian invasion—God would turn His face toward His people and give them peace.

The lesson for us is clear. Even if we deserve what we have coming, we can cling to God’s promise. His heart always yearns for His people. - MIKE WITTMER
