주여 누구시니이까?

루이스 로드리게스는 16세 때 이미 마약 판매로 교도소 생활을 했습니다. 그리고 지금은 살인미수 혐의로 체포되어 교도소에 다시 수감되었는데, 종신형 선고를 눈 앞에 두고 있습니다. 그러나 하나님은 수형 생활하는 그에게 말씀하셨습니다. 감옥 안에서 젊은 루이스는 어머니가 그를 교회에 열심히 데려갔던 유년 시절을 기억해낸 것입니다. 이제야 루이스는 하나님이 그의 마음을 강하게 이끄시는 것을 느꼈습니다. 루이스는 마침내 자신의 죄를 회개하고 예수님께 돌아왔습니다.

사도행전에서 바울이라고도 불리는 열성적인 유대인 남자 사울을 보게 됩니다. 그는 예수 믿는 사람들을 무자비하게 박해한 죄를 지었으며 마음에 살기가 등등한 사람이었습니다(사도행전 9:1). 그는 폭력배의 두목 같은 사람이었으며, 스테반을 처형할 때 폭도의 일원이었다는 증거가 있습니다(7:58). 그러나 하나님은 사울이 무슨 죄를 지었는지 문자 그대로 말씀하셨습니다. 다메섹으로 가는 길에서 사울은 빛으로 눈이 보이지 않게 되었는데, 그때 예수님이 그에게 “네가 어찌하여 나를 핍박하느냐”(9:4) 라고 말씀하셨습니다. 사울은 “주여 누구시니이까?”(5절) 하고 물었는데, 그것이 그의 새로운 삶의 시작이었습니다. 예수님께 나아간 것입니다.

루이스 로드리게스는 복역했지만 결국 가석방되었습니다. 그 이후로 미국과 중앙아메리카에서 교도소 사역에 평생을 바치며 하나님을 섬겼습니다.

하나님은 아무리 죄가 많은 사람일지라도 구원하십니다. 주님은 우리의 마음을 이끄시고 죄악에 깊이 빠진 우리의 삶에 말씀하십니다. 어쩌면 지금이 바로 우리의 죄를 회개하고 예수님께 나아갈 때인지도 모르겠습니다.

WHO ARE YOU, LORD?

At age sixteen, Luis Rodriguez had already been in jail for selling crack. But now, arrested for attempted murder, he was in prison again—looking at a life sentence. But God spoke into his guilty circumstances. Behind bars, young Luis remembered his early years when his mother had faithfully taken him to church. He now felt God tugging at his heart. Luis eventually repented of his sins and came to Jesus.

In the book of Acts, we meet a zealous Jewish man named Saul, who was also called Paul. He was guilty of aggravated assault on believers in Jesus and had murder in his heart (ACTS 9:1). There’s evidence he was a kind of gang leader, and part of the mob at the execution of Stephen (7:58). But God spoke into Saul’s guilty circumstances— literally. On the street leading into Damascus, Saul was blinded by a light, and Jesus said to him, “Why do you persecute me?” (9:4). Saul asked, “Who are you, Lord?” (V. 5), and that was the beginning of his new life. He came to Jesus.

Luis Rodriguez served time but eventually was granted parole. Since then, he’s served God, devoting his life to prison ministry in the United States and Central America.

God specializes in redeeming the worst of us. He tugs at our hearts and speaks into our guilt-drenched lives. Maybe it’s time we repent of our sins and come to Jesus.

인간은 모험을 위해 만들어졌다

나는 최근에 아주 놀라운 발견을 했습니다. 집 근처 나무들이 우거진 곳으로 나있는 흙길을 걷다가 숨겨져 있는 누군가 만들어 놓은 놀이터를 본 것입니다. 나무로 만든 사다리가 망루로 이어져있고, 낡은 케이블로 만든 그네가 나뭇가지에 매달려 있으며 심지어 큰 나뭇가지들을 잇는 출렁다리도 매달려 있었습니다. 어느 누군가가 오래된 나무와 밧줄로 창조적인 모험의 장소를 만들어 놓은 것입니다!

스위스 의사 폴 투르니에는 우리는 하나님의 형상으로 만들어졌기 때문에(창세기 1:26-27) 모험을 하도록 창조되었다고 믿었습니다. 하나님께서 우주를 창조하시고(1-25절), 선과 악을 선택할 수 있는 인간을 만드시는 모험을 주저하지 않으시면서(3:5-6), 또 인간들을 불러 “생육하고 번성하여 땅에 충만하라, 땅을 정복하라”(1:28)고 하셨으므로, 우리에게도 개발하고, 위험을 무릅쓰면서, 그리고 지구 위에 번성하기 위해 새로운 것을 창조하려는 추진력이 있습니다. 그런 모험들은 클 수도 작을 수도 있겠지만, 다른 이들에게 혜택을 주게 될 때 가장 좋은 것입니다. 단언하건데, 그 놀이터를 만든 사람들은 사람들이 그곳을 찾아 재미있게 이용한다면 무척 기뻐할 것입니다.

새로운 음악을 작곡한다든지, 전도의 새로운 방식을 연구한다든지, 또는 소원해진 결혼 관계를 되살리는 일을 한다든지, 이런 모든 종류의 모험들은 우리의 심장을 뛰게 합니다. 지금 당신은 어떤 새로운 일이나 과제에 몰두하고 있습니까? 어쩌면 하나님께서 새로운 모험으로 인도하고 계실지도 모르겠습니다.

MADE FOR ADVENTURE

I recently made a wonderful discovery. Following a dirt path into a cluster of trees near my home, I found a hidden homemade playground. A ladder made of sticks led up to a lookout, swings
made from old cable spools hung from branches, and there was even a suspension bridge slung between boughs. Someone had turned some old wood and rope into a creative adventure!

Swiss physician Paul Tournier believed that we were made for adventure because we’re made in God’s image (GENESIS 1:26–27). Just as God ventured forth to invent a universe (VV. 1–25), just as He took the risk of creating humans who could choose good or evil (3:5–6), and just as He called us to “be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it” (1:28), we too have a drive to invent, take risks, and create new things as we fruitfully rule the earth. Such adventures may be large or small, but they’re best when they benefit others. I bet the makers of that playground would get a kick out of people finding and enjoying it.

Whether it’s inventing new music, exploring new forms of evangelism, or rekindling a marriage that’s grown distant, adventures of all kinds keep our heart beating. What new task or project is tugging at you right now? Perhaps God is leading you to a new adventure.

거할 처소

제비과에 속한 몸집이 작은 갈색제비는 강기슭에 둥지를 틉니다. 영국 남동부의 토지개발로 인해 그들의 서식지가 줄어들면서 해마다 월동을 끝내고 돌아오는 새들이 둥지를 틀 장소가 점점 찾기 어려워졌습니다. 그 지역의 환경 단체들은 거대한 인조 모래 언덕을 만들어 새들이 집을 지을 수 있도록 긴급 조치를 취했습니다. 모래로 조형물을 만드는 어느 한 회사의 도움으로 모래를 이용해서 새들이 해마다 돌아와 서식할 수 있는 곳을 조성한 것입니다.

이런 연민에 가득 찬 자비로운 조치는 예수님이 제자들을 위로하는 말씀에 생생하게 묘사되어 있습니다. 예수님은 제자들에게 “내가 가는 곳에 네가 지금은 따라올 수 없으나 후에는 오리라”(요한복음 13:36)라고 말씀하신 후에 천국에 “[그들을] 위해 거처를 예비하러 가신다”(14:2)는 확신을 주셨습니다. 예수님이 제자들이 따라갈 수 없는 길을 곧 간다고 하시니 제자들은 분명히 상심하였으나, 예수님은 이러한 성스러운 일이 천국에서 그들과 우리를 맞이할 준비의 한 과정으로 여기라고 위로하셨습니다.

예수님의 십자가 위에서의 희생이 없었다면 아버지의 집에 우리 모두가 거할 “넉넉한 거처”가 예비되지 않았을 것입니다(2절). 우리 앞서 예비하러 가신 그리스도께서는 주님의 희생으로 주님과 함께 거할 수 있음을 믿는 사람들 을 데리러 다시 오실 거라는 것을 확신시켜 주십니다. 그곳에서 우리는 주님과 함께 영원토록 즐거이 거할 것입니다.

A NESTING PLACE

Sand martins—small birds related to swallows—dig their nests into riverbanks. Land development in South East England reduced their habitat, and the birds had fewer and fewer places to nest when they returned from their winter migration each year. Local conservationists sprang into action and built an enormous artificial sandbank to house them. With the help of a sand-sculpting firm, they molded sand to create a space for the birds to take up residence for years to come.

This gracious act of compassion vividly depicts the words Jesus used to console His disciples. After telling them He’d be leaving and that they wouldn’t be able to go with Him until later (JOHN 13:36), He offered them the assurance that He’d “prepare a place for [them]” in heaven (14:2). Though they were rightly saddened that Jesus said He would leave them soon and that they could not fol- low Him, He encouraged them to look on this holy errand as part of His preparation to receive them—and us.

Without Jesus’ sacrificial work on the cross, the “many rooms” of the Father’s house wouldn’t be able to receive us (V. 2). Having gone before us in preparation, Christ assures us He’ll return and take those who trust in His sacrifice to be with Him. There we’ll take up residence with Him in a joyous eternity. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

새로운 시력

내가 새 안경을 쓰고 예배당에 들어가 앉았을 때 통로 바로 건너편에 친구가 앉아 있는 것을 보았습니다. 친구에게 손을 흔들었는데, 아주 가까이 또렷하게 보였습니다. 몇 미터 떨어져 있었지만 손을 뻗어 바로 만질 수 있을 것 같았습니다. 나중에 예배 후 이야기를 나누면서 나는 그 친구가 항상 같은 자리에 앉아 있었다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 단지 내가 내 눈에 맞게 처방된 새 안경을 썼기 때문에 친구를 더 잘 볼 수 있었을 뿐이었습니다.

이사야 선지자를 통해 말씀하시는 하나님은 바벨론에 포로로 잡힌 이스라엘 자손들에게 새로운 처방, 즉 새로운 비전이 필요하다는 것을 아셨습니다. 그래서 하나님은 그들에게 “보라 내가 새 일을 행하리니... 내가 광야에 길을 내겠다”(이사야 43:19)고 말씀하셨습니다. 그리고 하나님은 희망의 말씀을 하시며 하나님께서 그들을 “창조하셨고” “구속하셨으며” 그들과 함께 하실 것임을 상기시켜주셨습니다. 또한 하나님은 “너희는 내것이라”(1절)고 하시며 그들을 격려해 주셨습니다.

오늘 어떤 일을 만나든, 성령께서 당신이 낡은 것을 뒤로하고 새로운 것을 찾을 수 있도록 더 좋은 시력을 주실 수 있습니다. 하나님의 사랑으로 (4절) 우리는 주위의 모든 것을 그런 시력으로 볼 수 있습니다. 당신은 고통과 속박 가운데에서 하나님께서 하시는 일을 볼 수 있습니까? 황량한 순간에도 하나님께서 일하시는 새로운 일을 보기 위해 새로운 영적 안경을 쓰시기를 권합니다.

NEW VISION

Wearing my new eyeglasses as I stepped into the sanctuary, I sat down and spotted a friend sitting directly across the aisle on the other side of the church. As I waved at her, she looked so near and clear. It felt like I could reach out and touch her even though she was several yards away. Later, as we talked following the service, I realized she was in the same seat she always sat in. I simply could see her better because of an upgraded prescription in my new spectacles.

God, speaking through the prophet Isaiah, knew that the Israelites stuck in Babylonian captivity would need a new prescription—a new view. He told them. “I am doing a new thing! . . . I am making a way in the wilderness” (ISAIAH 43:19). And His message of hope included the reminders that He had “created” them, “redeemed” them, and would be with them. “You are mine,” He encouraged them (V. 1).

In whatever you’re facing today, the Holy Spirit can provide better vision for you to put the old behind you and look for the new. By God’s love (V. 4), it’s popping up all around you. Can you see what He’s doing in the midst of your pain and bondage? Let’s put on our new spiritual glasses to see the new that God is doing even in our wilderness moments. - KATARA PATTON

구원의 사명

호주의 어떤 농장 동물 구조 단체의 자원봉사자들은 더럽고 엉클어져 75 파운드(34 킬로그램)가 넘는 무거운 털로 덮인 채로 떠돌아다니는 양을 발견했습니다. 구조 대원들은 그 양이 숲에서 길을 잃어 적어도 5년 동안 잊혀졌었다고 생각했습니다. 자원봉사자들은 그 양을 달래 가며 힘들게 무거운 양털을 깎았습니다. 무거운 털의 짐을 벋고 나니 그제야 바락은 먹이를 먹었습니다. 그의 다리는 점점 튼튼해졌고, 보호구역에서 구조 대원과 다른 동물들과 함께 시간을 보내며 더 자신감이 생기고 편안하게 적응하게 되었습니다.

시편의 저자 다윗은 무거운 짐에 억눌리며, 잊혀지고 길을 잃어 구조를 절실히 바라는 그 고통을 잘 알고 있었습니다. 그래서 시편 38편에서 다윗은 하나님께 울부짖었습니다. 고립과 배신과 무력감을 경험하면서도(11-14절) 다윗은 확신을 가지고 기도했습니다. “여호와여 내가 주를 바랐사오니 내 주 하나님이 내게 응답하시리이다”(15절). 다윗은 자신의 곤경을 부인하거나 내면의 혼란과 육신의 아픔을 과소평가하지 않았습니다(16-20절). 그 대신 하나님께서 가까이 계셔서 적절한 시간에 올바른 방법으로 응답해 주실 것이라고 믿었습니다(21-22절).

우리가 육체적, 정신적, 또는 감정적인 짐에 억눌려 있다고 느낄 때에도, 하나님은 우리를 창조하신 그날부터 계획하셨던 구원의 사명을 계속하고 계십니다. 우리가 “속히 나를 도우소서 주 나의 구원이시여”(22절)라고 하나님께 부르짖을 때, 우리는 하나님이 우리와 함께 계신다는 것을 믿어야 합니다.

RESCUE MISSION

Volunteers at a farm animal rescue organization in Australia found a wandering sheep weighed down by more than seventy-five pounds of filthy, matted wool. Rescuers sus- pected the sheep had been forgotten and lost in the bush for at least five years. Volunteers soothed him through the uncomfortable process of shearing away his heavy fleece. Once freed from his burden, Baarack ate. His legs grew stronger. He became more confident and content as he spent time with his rescuers and the other animals at the sanctuary.

The psalmist David understood the pain of being weighed down with heavy burdens, feeling forgotten and lost, and desper- ate for a rescue mission. In Psalm 38, David cried out to God. He had experienced isolation, betrayal, and helplessness (VV. 11–14). Still, he prayed with confidence: “Lord, I wait for you; you will answer, Lord my God” (V. 15). David didn’t deny his predicament or minimize his inner turmoil and physical ailments (VV. 16–20). Instead, he trusted that God would be near and answer him at the right time and in the right way (VV. 21–22).

When we feel weighed down by physical, mental, or emotional burdens, God remains committed to the rescue mission He planned from the day He created us. We can count on His presence when we cry out to Him: “Come quickly to help me, my Lord and my Savior” (V. 22). - XOCHITL DIXON

작은 출발

브루클린 다리는 1883년 완공 당시 “세계 8대 불가사의”로 여겨졌습니다. 그러나 그 다리를 완성하는 데 있어서 핵심적인 부분은 다리의 한 타워에서 다른 타워를 연결하는 한 가닥 가느다란 철사줄이었습니다. 그 첫 번째 철사줄에 다른 철사줄들을 더해서 케이블을 만들고, 그렇게 만든 세 개의 다른 케이블과 함께 서로 엮어 하나의 거대한 케이블을 만들었습니다. 이 거대 케이블이 완성되었을 때 그것들은 각각 5000가닥 이상의 아연 도금 철사줄로 이루어졌는데, 그것들이 당시의 가장 긴 현수교를 지탱해 주었던 것입니다. 아주 작은 것으로 시작된 것이 브루클린 다리의 엄청난 부분을 이루게 된 것입니다.

예수님의 생애도 아기로 태어나 작은 마을의 구유에 놓이면서(누가복음 2:7) 작게 시작되었습니다. 선지자 미가는 그분의 미천한 탄생을 예언하면서 다음과 같이 기록했습니다. “베들레헴 에브라다야 네가 유다 족속 중에 작을지라도 이스라엘을 다스릴 자가 네게서 내게로 나오리라”(미가 5:2; 마태복음 2:6 참조). 작은 시작이었지만 통치자이시며 목자이신 예수님은 명성과 사명이 “땅끝까지 미치게”(미가 5:4) 될 것입니다.

예수님은 겸손하게 작은 곳에서 태어나셨고 이 땅에서 “자신을 낮추시고” 범죄자의 형벌을 받아 “십자가”에서 죽으셨습니다(빌립보서 2:8). 그러나 예수님은 엄청난 희생을 통해 우리와 하나님 사이의 간격을 메움으로써 모든 믿는 자들에게 구원을 베푸셨습니다. 새해에는 예수님 안에서 믿음으로 하나님의 크신 선물을 받으시기 바랍니다. 그리고 예수님을 믿는다면 그분이 당신을 위해 하신 모든 일에 대해 주님을 새로운 마음으로 겸손하게 찬양하십시오.

A SMALL START

he Brooklyn Bridge was considered “the eighth wonder of the world” upon its completion in 1883. But a single, slender wire strung from one bridge tower to the other was essen- tial for the structure to come to fruition. Additional wires were added to the first until a massive cable, along with three others, was woven together. When finished, each cable—composed of more than five thousand galvanized wires—helped support the longest suspension bridge in its day. What started as something small turned into a huge part of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Jesus’ life began in a small way—a baby born and placed in a feeding trough in a tiny town (LUKE 2:7). The prophet Micah prophesied His humble birth, writing, “Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel” (MICAH 5:2; SEE ALSO MATTHEW 2:6). A small start, but this ruler and shepherd would see His fame and mission “reach to the ends of the earth” (MICAH 5:4).

Jesus was born in a small place in humility, and His life on earth ended as “he humbled himself” and died a criminal’s death on a “cross” (PHILIPPIANS 2:8 nlt). But by His immense sacrifice He bridged the gap between us and God—providing salvation for all who believe. This season, may you receive God’s great gift in Jesus by faith. And if you do believe, may you humbly praise Him anew for all He’s done for you. -TOM FELTEN

기뻐하십시오

키이스는 우울한 기분으로 농산물 코너를 터벅터벅 걸어가고 있었습니다. 파킨슨병의 첫 징후로 그의 손이 떨리고 있었습니다. ‘언제 병세가 악화될까? 그때 아내와 아이들은 어떻게 받아들일까?’ 키이스의 이런 우울한 생각은 웃음 소리로 산산조각 흩어졌습니다. 감자 더미 옆에 어떤 남자가 휠체어에 앉아 키득거리고 있는 소년을 밀고 있었습니다. 아빠가 몸을 기울여서 무슨 말인가 속삭이자 아이는 웃음을 멈추지 못했습니다. 키이스보다 눈에 띄게 건강이 좋지 않았지만 소년과 그의 아버지는 그들이 할 수 있는 한 기쁨을 누리고 있었습니다.

감옥에서나 가택 연금 상태에서 재판의 결과를 기다리면서 편지를 쓸 때, 바울 사도는 기뻐할 처지가 아니었습니다(빌립보서 1:12-13). 당시 로마 황제는 폭력과 잔학함으로 악명 높은 사악한 네로였기 때문에 바울이 염려하는 것은 당연했습니다. 또한 자신이 없는 틈을 타 본인들의 영광을 얻으려는 설교자들이 있다는 것도 알고 있었습니다. 그들은 바울 사도가 감옥에 있는 동안 그에게 “괴로움을 더하게 할” 수 있다고 생각했습니다(17절).

그러나 바울은 기뻐하기로 작정하고(18-21절) 빌립보 교인들에게 그의 본을 따르라고 말했습니다. “주 안에서 항상 기뻐하라 내가 다시 말하노니 기뻐하라”(4:4). 우리의 상황이 암담하게 느껴질 수 있겠지만, 예수님이 지금 우리와 함께 하시고 우리의 영광스러운 미래를 약속해 주십니다. 무덤에서 걸어 나오신 그리스도께서는 우리 믿는 자들을 일으켜서 주님과 함께 살게 하기 위해 다시 오실 것입니다. 이 새해를 시작하면서 우리 모두 기뻐하시기 바랍니다.

CHOOSE JOY

Keith was feeling down as he trudged through the produce aisle. His hands trembled from the first signs of Parkinson’s disease. How long before his quality of life began to slide? What would this mean for his wife and children? Keith’s gloom was shattered by laughter. Over by the potatoes, a man pushed a giggling boy in a wheelchair. The man leaned over and whispered to his son, who couldn’t stop grinning. He was noticeably worse off than Keith, yet he and his dad were finding joy where they could.

Writing from prison or under house arrest as he awaited the outcome of his trial, the apostle Paul seemingly had no right to be joyful (PHILIPPIANS 1:12–13). The emperor was Nero, a wicked man who had a growing reputation for violence and cruelty, so Paul had reason to be concerned. He also knew there were preachers who were taking advantage of his absence to gain glory for themselves. They thought they could “stir up trouble” for the apostle while he was imprisoned (V. 17).

Yet Paul chose to rejoice (VV. 18–21), and he told the Philippians to follow his example: “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” (4:4). Our situation might seem bleak, yet Jesus is with us now, and He’s guaranteed our glorious future. Christ, who walked out of His tomb, will return to raise His followers to live with Him. 끝마무리 잘하기

폴란드에서 열린 2019년도 육상 세계 마스터스 챔피언십에 103세의 나이로 출전한 만 카우르는 가장 나이가 많은 인도 여자 선수였습니다. 놀랍게도 카우르는 4개의 종목(창던지기, 투포환, 60 미터 달리기 및 200 미터 달리기)에서 금메달을 땄습니다. 그러나 가장 놀라운 것은 그녀가 2017년도 챔피언십 경기 때보다 ‘더 빠르게’ 달렸다는 것입니다. 증조할머니로서 한 세기를 살고, 다음 한 세기로 접어든 카우르는 끝마무리를 잘 한다는 것이 어떤 것인지를 우리에게 보여주었습니다.

FINISHING STRONG

At the age of 103, a woman named Man Kaur competed as India’s oldest female athlete during the 2019 World Masters Athletic Championship in Poland. Remarkably, Kaur won gold in four events (javelin throw, shot put, 60-meter dash, and 200-meter run). But most astounding was that she ran faster than she ran in the 2017 championship. A great-grandmother running into her second century, Kaur showed how to finish strong.

The apostle Paul wrote to Timothy, a younger disciple, of how he’d entered his concluding years. “The time for my departure is near,” Paul wrote (2 TIMOTHY 4:6). Reflecting on his life, he confidently believed he was finishing strong. “I have fought the good fight,” Paul said. “I have finished the race” (V. 7). He wasn’t confident because he’d calculated his impressive accomplishments or surveyed his vast impact (though they were immense). Rather, he knew he’d “kept the faith” (V. 7). The apostle had remained loyal to Jesus. Through sorrows and joys, he’d followed the One who’d rescued him from ruin. And he knew that Jesus stood ready with a “crown of righteousness,” the joyful finale to his faithful life (V. 8).

Paul insists that this crown isn’t for an elite few but for “all who have longed for [Christ’s] appearing” (V.8). As we head into a new year, let’s remember that Jesus stands eager to crown all who’ve loved Him, and may we live to finish strong. - WINN COLLIER

혼돈 속의 은혜

어느 날 오후 나도 모르게 스르르 잠이 들려고 하는데 지하실 방에서 들려오는 소리에 깜짝 놀라 눈을 떴습니다. 아들의 격정적인 전기기타 소리였습니다. 벽이 진동하고 평온이나 고요, 달콤한 낮잠 같은 것은 순식간에 사라졌습니다. 그리고 얼마 후 기타 소리를 밀어내고 또 다른 소리가 내 귀를 즐겁게 했습니다. 딸아이가 피아노로 연주하는 찬송가 “나 같은 죄인 살리신”이었습니다.

보통 때에는 아들의 기타 소리를 좋아했지만 그때만큼은 놀라고 거슬렸습니다. 그런데 그것도 잠시, 늘 듣던 존 뉴턴의 찬양이 혼돈 속에서도 하나님의 은혜가 이긴다는 것을 일깨워 주었습니다. 원치 않는 인생의 폭풍이 아무리 요란하게 우리를 흔들어도 분명하고 참된 하나님의 은혜의 찬송은 우리를 보살피시는 그분의 손길을 생각나게 해줍니다.

성경에서도 이러한 장면을 봅니다. 시편 107:23-32에서 우리는 배를 삼킬 듯한 폭풍에 맞서 온 힘으로 싸우는 선원들을 만납니다. “그 위험 때문에 그들의 영혼이 녹을”(26절) 지경이었으나 절망하지 않았습니다. “그들이 그들의 고통 때문에 여호와께 부르짖으매 그가 그들의 고통에서 그들을 인도하여 내시고”(28절), 결국 “그들이 평온함으로 말미암아 기뻐하는 중에 여호와께서 그들이 바라는 항구로 인도하셨다”(30절)고 기록합니다.

밤잠을 설치게 하고 목숨까지도 위협하는 혼돈의 시간에는 온갖 큰 소리와 두려움이 파도처럼 몰려와 우리의 영혼을 공격합니다. 그러나 하나님을 의지하고 그분께 기도할 때 우리는 하나님의 임재와 공급하시는 은혜, 곧 하나님의 신실한 사랑의 안식을 경험하게 됩니다.

GRACE AMID THE CHAOS

I was drifting off into an impromptu nap when it hit me. From the basement, my son ripped a chord on his electric guitar. The walls reverberated. No peace. No quiet. No nap. Moments later, competing music greeted my ears: my daughter playing “Amazing Grace” on the piano.

Normally, I love my son’s guitar playing. But in that moment, it jarred and unsettled me. Just as quickly, the familiar notes of John Newton’s hymn reminded me that grace thrives amid the chaos. No matter how loud, unwanted, or disorienting the storms of life might be, God’s notes of grace ring clear and true, reminding us of His watchful care over us.

We see that reality in Scripture. In Psalm 107:23–32, sailors struggle mightily against a maelstrom that could easily devour them. “In their peril, their courage melted away” (V. 26). Still, they didn’t despair but “cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress” (V. 28). Finally, we read: “They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven” (V. 30).

In chaotic moments, whether they’re life-threatening or merely sleep-threatening, the barrage of noise and fear can storm our souls. But as we trust God and pray to Him, we experience the grace of His presence and provision—the haven of His steadfast love. - ADAM R. HOLZ

한 젊은 여성이 좀처럼 잠을 이루지 못했습니다. 오랜 세월 신체의 장애를 가지고 살아온 그녀는 다음 날 교회에서 학비 마련을 위한 기부금 조성을 목적으로 열리는 바자회에서 중심 역할을 해야 했기 때문입니다. ‘하지만 나는 자격이 없어.’라고 샬롯 엘리엇은 생각했습니다. 그녀는 뒤척이면서 삶의 모든 영적인 면을 돌아보니 자기는 자격이 없다는 생각이 들었습니다. 다음 날 여전히 불편한 마음으로 샬롯은 마침내 책상으로 다가가 펜과 종이를 들어 지금은 모두가 부르는 찬송가 “내 모습 이대로 (큰 죄에 빠진 날 위해)”를 적어내려 갔습니다.

“큰 죄에 빠진 날 위해/ 주 보혈 흘려 주시고/ 또 나를 오라 하시니/ 주께로 거저 갑니다.”

1835년에 쓰인 이 가사는 예수님께서 어떻게 제자들을 부르시고 따르게 하셨는지를 표현하고 있습니다. 제자들이 준비가 잘 되었기 때문이 아니었습니다. 오히려 준비가 안 되어 있었습니다. 다만 예수님께서 그들의 모습 그대로에다 권능을 주셨기 때문입니다. 오합지졸 같은 12명 중에는 세리, 열심 당원, 야망으로 가득한 두 형제(마가복음 10:35-37 참조), 그리고 “예수를 배반한”(마태복음 10:4) 가룟 유다도 있었습니다. 그럼에도 예수님께서는 제자들에게 “병든 자를 고치며 죽은 자를 살리며 나병 환자를 깨끗하게 하며 귀신을 쫓아내는”(8절) 권능을 주시되, 돈이나 배낭이나 두 벌 옷이나 신이나 지팡이를 가지지 말라(9-10절)고 하셨습니다.

“내가 너희를 보내노라”고 말씀하신(16절), 그 예수님으로 충분했습니다. 예수님께 “예”라고 순종하는 우리에게도 그분이면 충분합니다.

JUST AS I AM

The young woman couldn’t sleep. Having suffered with a physical disability for many years, she’d be center stage at a church bazaar the next day to raise funds for higher educa- tion. But I’m not worthy, Charlotte Elliott reasoned. Tossing and turning, she doubted her credentials, questioning every aspect of her spiritual life. Still restless the next day, she finally moved to a desk to pick up pen and paper to write down the words of the now classic hymn, “Just As I Am”:

“Just as I am, without one plea, / But that Thy blood was shed for me, / And that Thou bidst me come to Thee, / O Lamb of God, I come, I come.”

Her words, written in 1835, express how Jesus called His disciples to come and serve Him. Not because they were ready. They weren’t. But because He authorized them—just as they were. A ragtag group, his team of twelve included a tax collector, a zealot, two overly ambitious brothers (SEE MARK 10:35–37), and Judas Iscariot “who betrayed him” (MATTHEW 10:4). Still, He gave them authority to “heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons” (V. 8)—all without taking any money, luggage, extra shirt or sandals, or even a walking stick with them (VV. 9–10).

“I am sending you,” He said (V. 16), and He was enough. For each of us who say yes to Him, He still is. - PATRICIA RAYBON
